Sexism tackled in school yard

Gridlock threatens towns Sunbury and Macedon Ranges motorists are being urged to become ‘squeaky wheels’, to pester decision-makers amid fears the area’s major roads are going to miss out on funding. Former Bulla shire mayor Hector Bugeja said already-clogged thoroughfares, such as Sunbury Road, would become even more frightful over coming years, with explosive population growth in areas such as Gisborne, Sunbury and Diggers Rest. Mr Bugeja said central Sunbury was at risk of coming to a total standstill unless Elizabeth Drive was extended and something was done
to alleviate traffic congestion, especially at the intersection of Gap Road and Horne Street. He supported calls by Hume mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou for people to take part in the RACV’s outer metropolitan Growing Pains survey before its March 30 deadline. ‘‘People need to really make some noise,’’ he said. ‘‘It seems like the government takes notice of these surveys. We need to show them it’s important because roads in Sunbury don’t seem to be of high importance.’’ Mr Bugeja said there appeared to be a lack of will on both sides of politics. ‘‘These are things that were looked at in the old shire of Bulla days. The answers are there; they just don’t do

it. Sunbury Road near Bulla is a real problem. It’s a big project, no doubt, but there’s a huge amount of people using that road. “Maybe people are saying [the government] will wait until it becomes so bad and the outer metropolitan ring road comes along [in 2030] before it will do anything, but by that time this town will be so big we won’t know what to do about it.’’ There were 60 crashes, including two fatalities, on Sunbury Road in the most recently recorded five-year period. More than 23,000 vehicles use the single-lane road to and from Melbourne Airport daily, with more to come as thousands of houses are built east of Sunbury
and along the Melbourne-Lancefield Road. Cr Patsikatheodorou said the road needed urgent attention, with motorists forced to wait long periods in clogged traffic. “The result is a very frustrating commute,’’ she said. ‘‘We want our residents to enjoy the roads that people in other areas of Melbourne take for granted.’’ The state government has previously said VicRoads has plans to reserve land to link Melbourne Airport and a future outer metro ring road, including a Bulla bypass. A feasibility study to replace the Gap Road-Horne Street roundabout with traffic lights is also under way.

Councils probed, residents rapt By Matt Crossman An independent, statewide investigation into the transparency of local government decisionmaking has been welcomed by the Sunbury Residents Association. Group president Bernie O’Farrell applauded the state ombudsman’s probe, launched in response to a pattern of complaints about councils, including closed meetings and the handling of confidential matters. The nature, quality and public availability of records will also be investigated.
‘‘There has been some concern about Hume’s transparency, with some things being done behind closed doors,’’ Mr O’Farrell said. ‘‘I don’t think this council is any better than other councils, that’s for sure.’’ The ombudsman’s 2015 annual report shows that Hume was the state’s 10th-most complained about council, with 91 complaints; Macedon Ranges council was 43rd, with 27 in total. The most typical complaints included inadequate or delayed responses and poor processes for handling complaints and disputes.
Mr O’Farrell said local government transparency was crucial to community confidence. ‘‘The fact that some decisions aren’t being made in an open forum, it can open up a whole range of issues,’’ he said. ‘‘The way council goes about some things leaves a lot to be desired.’’ Hume chief executive Domenic Isola said the vast majority of decisions were made by councillors in meetings open to the public. Less than a fifth (19 per cent) of resolutions were reached in closed-door meetings in 2014-15. Mr Isola said this was in line with
SunFest rocks on better than ever A talent show, live music, stalls, a carnival and street parade will be part of Sunbury’s 40th annual SunFest this weekend. The free, three-day festival, which began life in the wake of the Sunbury rock festivals of the 1970s, has gone from something planned around kitchen tables and centred on small community halls to one of the nation’s biggest volunteer-run festivals. More than 30,000 people attended last year. Returning to the top job after the committee lost several long-serving members last year, president Maureen Kear says highlights of this year’s program will include a festival launch and talent shows on Friday night, a SunFest Under the Stars concert and fireworks on Saturday, and a health expo, walk and fun run, and displays on Sunday. ‘‘It was a very different festival in those days,’’ Ms Kear said of the event’s humble beginnings. ‘‘I started off putting on films for the little ones, blacking out all the windows in the memorial hall. We used to have people racing from one old hall to another for round-robin basketball and then netball came later.’’ Ms Kear says the first street parade, held in about 1980, was organised with the help of the handful of schools in the area. This year’s parade – on Evans, Harker and O’Shanassy streets – will feature many dozens of participants including local emergency services, schools, kinders and community groups. Sunbury’s Henry twins, fresh from their performances on Australia’s Got Talent, and many of SunFest’s past presidents will also be part of the procession. Ms Kear said that while Sunbury continued to change at a rapid rate, SunFest provided a valuable link to the town’s past. ‘‘It’s such a great way to celebrate our community.’’ Details: www.sunfest.org.au

Auction reform ‘open to abuse’ Proposed changes designed to stamp out the underquoting of estimated auction results don’t go far enough, former Real Estate Institute of Victoria ethics committee chairman John Keating claims. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, the Woodend-based Keatings Real Estate director believes major reform is needed to stop rogue agents misleading potential buyers by underquoting house price estimates by tens of thousands of dollars. The state government last week flagged new laws that would double the fine for underquoting to $30,000. Agents would also risk losing their sales commissions if caught out. Consumer Affairs Minister Jane Garrett said agents would be banned from advertising properties with ‘‘plus’’ or ‘‘offers over’’, and the advertised price must be within a 10 per cent range. Agents would also have to provide fact sheets, including three recent comparable sales, the estimated sale price and the suburb’s median property price. But Mr Keating said the system would still be open to abuse. ‘‘The fundamental problem hasn’t been addressed,’’ he said. ‘‘As long as the vendor has the right to change their mind any time up until they sign a contract, agents will still be able to conceal the prices vendors are really looking for. ‘‘The requirement for three comparable sales is going to be very difficult to actively police because agents will give sales that might purport to be comparable, but are not.’’ Mr Keating wants agents to be required to publish the vendor’s reserve price in all advertising.

Field Trip to Men’s Shed Members of a Macedon Ranges youth group have enlisted the support of the Woodend Men’s Shed to build a cubby house for the youngsters to auction off to help homelessness charity Urban Seed. Fifteen young people from the Lancefield-based Field Trip are involved in the 12-week project, which started with design work guided by local architect Pete Collings. The group’s members, aged 10-17, are spending an hour at the shed every Thursday afternoon. Field Trip director Owen Phillips says while they are learning valuable construction and design skills, they are also discovering more about homelessness and the Men’s Shed movement.

Land sales lift Sunbury’s profile By Matt Crossman Central Sunbury is on the move again, with a prominent corner site snapped up by a Melbourne property developer for $1.25 million. The 2640 square-metre lot of three titles at 1-5 Riddell Road is in a mixed-use zone north of the Horne Street roundabout, and has been owned by a local family for more than 50 years. Selling agent Dean Alexander, of Fitzroys, said the high profile corner site offered numerous development options.

falling over due to hurdles with finance and due diligence. ‘‘The property received strong interest from developers looking to capitalise on the flexibility of the site and the region’s rapid population growth,’’ he said. The Riddell Road sale is the latest in a number of significant property deals in Sunbury. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, Hume council intends to build a global learning centre and library on a 4083 square-metre Macedon Street site, which it bought for $1.885 million last month.
Australian investors snapped up the Sunbury Central shopping centre for $40 million in August last year, a little more than a month after a 206 hectare residential site south of Sunbury was sold to Chinese investors, also for $40 million. Ingram Property Group director Glenn Ingram said the sale of the shopping centre and recent developments by major corporations, including residential builders Villawood and Australand, reflect growing interest in the area. ‘‘There are plenty of people now who are seeing Sunbury as a regional base,’’ he said.
Sounds like destiny A Sunbury boy who wowed crowds with a central part in Les Miserables is preparing for his second major role. Jackson Rudge, 11, recently won a place in one of three alternating casts for the forthcoming Melbourne season of The Sound of Music, playing Friedrich von Trapp. His mum, Donna, says Jackson, the youngest of five children, has always had a flair for the dramatic. ‘‘Even when he was little, he used to walk around singing and dancing all the time,’’ she said. ‘‘We enrolled him in classes when he was five and he’s taken it from there.’’ Jackson spends up to 17 hours a week at Sunbury’s FlashDance Performing Arts, where he trains in singing, acting and dancing. ‘‘We’ve never pushed him – it’s just what he loves to do,’’ Ms Rudge said. Jackson, who will be involved in rehearsals for about a month before the show opens at
the Regent Theatre in May, said he was excited about landing the role. ‘‘I’m really looking forward to it,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s going to be a little bit nerve-racking, I’m sure but at least I’ve been there before.’’ The grade 6 Sunbury Primary School pupil hopes to pursue a professional theatre career. ‘‘I really want to keep doing theatre,” he said. “I’d like to get involved in choreography, as well.’’ The Sound of Music will open on May 13 at the Regent Theatre. New voices tell of abuse More church abuse survivors from Sunbury have spoken up in the wake of Cardinal George Pell’s Royal Commission appearance. Sunbury’s Paul Levey, who was in Rome when Cardinal Pell gave evidence via videolink, said he had been inundated with calls and emails since returning last week. Some were from men who were talking for the first time after being abused while students at Salesian College. ‘‘More brothers, priests and teachers who were at Salesian have been named, and I know for sure they’ve not been previously named or charged,’’ Mr Levey said. “There’s been a 25 per cent increase in calls to the Centre Against Sexual Assault in Ballarat … Sunbury, now, has just exploded.’’ A large number of Salesian College principals, boarding masters and brothers who were at the college between 1960 and 1990 have faced courts on scores of sexual abuse charges. Mr Levey, who was abused as a child by a Ballarat diocese priest, said that while he previously believed that his trip to Rome would be ‘‘the end of it’’, he had returned with renewed fighting spirit. Mr Levey has called on the local Catholic diocese and Salesian College to pitch in for more men’s counselling services in the area. More than $11,000 has been raised to set up a Sunbury Men’s Survivors group, but more is needed to sustain a service. ‘‘I want the church to help fund a Sunbury support group, and I would like to see more

done nationally to make people aware of the help available,’’ he said. Mr Levey, who went to Rome with a group of Ballarat diocese survivors, said they were disappointed that the Pope claimed to have not received requests for a meeting. Mr Levey decided not to take part in a meeting with Cardinal Pell, who did not look at survivors while giving evidence. Having tied ribbons to fences and doors at the Vatican as visual reminders, Mr Levey urged anyone affected by church abuse to speak out. ‘‘What we’re saying is, no more silence.’’

Food boosts care factor More than 35,000 kilograms of food has been donated to Sunbury-based support agency CareWorks as part of a partnership between a major supermarket and fresh food rescue group SecondBite. Over the past three years, Coles Sunbury and SecondBite have teamed up to cut waste in the store, passing on enough fruit, vegetables and bread for about 70,000 meals. Cyclists want legal buffer zone By Matt Crossman Bike Safe Macedon Ranges is pleading with drivers to look out and ‘‘stay wide” of cyclists after recent incidents on local roads. Group president Margaret Douglas said one member was lucky to be alive after ending up on the windscreen of a car after being struck on Station Road, New Gisborne, on March 2. This comes after a string of crashes late last year involving riders, who were hit from behind in clear conditions, while wearing bright clothing and with bike lights on.

‘‘The majority of drivers are doing the right thing, but some are not,’’ Ms Douglas said. ‘‘So often, people are in the habit of looking for trucks and so on, but not cyclists.’’ Ms Douglas said the effects of such incidents extended beyond physical injuries, often
creating significant emotional and financial stress. Bike Safe Macedon Ranges is preparing a submission to a state government probe into possible minimum passing distance laws. Ms Douglas said the group wanted a 1.5 metre minimum distance between cyclists and vehicles on roads with a speed limit of more than 60km/h, and one metre when speeds are less than 60km/h. ‘‘Many think the risks to cyclists are mainly in the city, but our riders are often put in significant danger due to things like hills,
winding roads and higher speed limits in the country,’’ she said. Macedon Ranges council mayor Graham Hackett said sharing thoroughfares was a two-way street. ‘‘All road users have a responsibility to not only obey the road rules, but to be respectful of one another,’’ he said. Data shows four claims lodged with the Transport Accident Commission by cyclists in Macedon Ranges have involved hospitalisation, and 16 in Hume, in the past five years. Glory days revisited Some of the greatest plays of all time are bound for the stage of Kyneton’s renovated Bluestone Theatre, thanks to a new concept led by former Bellbird, Prisoner and Neighbours star Maggie Millar. Millar, who has been living in Kyneton for six years, says the Legends Theatre Club will present plays in the style of the old Lux Radio Theatre, with professional actors living in the Macedon Ranges delivering their lines into a microphone. Fourteen actors, who will receive a share of takings, have already signed up. ‘‘There are so many professional actors living in this shire, and we don’t ever get to see them perform locally,’’ Millar says. ‘‘This concept will bring to people plays and actors they normally wouldn’t see. ‘‘The redevelopment of the Bluestone Theatre gives us the perfect space for something like this.’’
Actors will also mentor young people wanting to break into the profession as part of Legends, which will be launched at a celebration at the theatre on April 3. Study into Kyneton LGBT niche By Matt Crossman The experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people who grew up in the Kyneton area will be central to a major national study on belonging and ‘‘sexual citizenship’’. Designed to document changes to wellbeing in a changing social world, Queer Generations will involve LGBT people born in the 1970s and 1990s. Field work will research an urban and regional site in each of Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia. Monash University associate professor
Mary Lou Rasmussen said Kyneton and the Macedon Ranges had been selected because of the community’s long-term advocacy for LGBT rights. ‘‘Kyneton has been doing work in this field for a long time through things like the [Cobaw Community Health’s] WayOut program for LGBT young people,’’ she said. ‘‘We want to see what effect these programs have had, talking to those who have been involved, and finding out what it’s meant to them.’’ Ms Rasmussen said the study would help governments, councils and organisations like
Cobaw finetune services. Event organisers, schools, families and even employers will also be able to gain insight into LGBT experiences. ‘‘We often hear that young LGBT people have a particular experience, but there’s not a lot of evidence,’’ Ms Rasmussen said. ‘‘We’re trying to collect that data from these two generations to track how their experience has changed. “Are workplaces more LGBT friendly than they were 20 years ago? … We’re hoping the study will have an impact across an array of different areas.’’ Ms Rasmussen said the study would also look at the health outcomes of those
born in the 1990s and those born shortly after homosexuality was decriminalised. Focus groups will begin meeting in the next few months, with a final report expected in 2018. The study has been welcomed by Cobaw chief executive Margaret McDonald, who said recent debate over the Safe Schools program was threatening gains made over 20 years. ‘‘The sad thing is we are still seeing some of the highest rates of suicide.’’ Volunteers are still needed – email alyce. vella@monash.edu.au. MY PLACE Riddells Creek mother of two Deb Mitrevics juggles two jobs and a string of voluntary roles, but she tells Matt Crossman that it’s not really a chore.
My family and I have lived in Riddell for 11 years. We shifted here from Melbourne’s north because we wanted to be part of a small community and be able to really get involved in things. The kids started at kinder and they’ve come through the school … so pretty much as soon as they started there we’ve been involved. As they’ve got older we’ve branched out into the sporting groups. We’ve sort of got a part in most things going on in Riddell. Can you tell us a few of the things that keep you busy around town? I work as an aide at Riddell primary school and I’ve also got a cleaning business. I’m also on the committee of the junior mixed basketball association. I just love it. Getting lists of what the kids need and working as a group towards a goal … it’s all making the community better. You’ve got two kids … I guess volunteering in groups they’re involved in is a good way to also spend time with them? It certainly is. It’s a great way to help them in something they’re interested in. And there’s always things going on that you can get involved in.
What would you say to people who want to get involved in the community but don’t know where to start or are worried about time? Just start small. Come to one of the meetings and suss it out. There’s always something to be done. We need lots and lots of people doing the little things and then we get the end result. It’s much better for us to have a few chipping in than to have the same few people doing everything. And there’s so much on offer here … footy, cricket, tennis, karate, scouts … there’s something to suit all interests. Is there a fair mix on the various committees in Riddell, in terms of people who grew up in the area and those who have moved recently? There is. We’ve got a couple of basketball dads who’ve grown up in Riddell, they used to ride their horses down the street, and then there’s the fresh ones like us. Where do you like to go for coffee and a bite to eat? One of the basketball association’s sponsors is the Mocha Leaf cafe, so that’s a good one. We also used to go to Seasons a lot until it shut down … it will reopen with new owners in late March.

SPORT Woodend netball looks to new coaches, junior talent The future is looking bright for WoodendHesket Netball Club in the Riddell District Netball League. Since its 10th-place finish last year, the club has had a massive off-season, setting up a platform for years to come. First step was to appoint former player Kellie Duff as netball co-ordinator. “They approached me to take on the role,” Duff said. “I have two girls currently playing in the junior club and I’ve been head coach and netball co-ordinator at the juniors for a couple of years.” Duff said she had taken on the co-ordinator’s role at the senior club as a challenge.
“There are a lot of exciting opportunities and, although I’m not expecting miracles overnight, I think some really positive changes will be obvious early in the season.” Duff’s experience with the juniors will be vital as the club moves forward. “Our junior and senior clubs are separate identities and play at different venues in Woodend,” she said. “This presents some pathway issues, but I think we can address this through my over-arching roles at both clubs. “We’ve lost some great players to neighbouring clubs in the past few years. One of our aims is to encourage our fantastic juniors to feed through into the senior sides
and, hopefully, see a real positive flow-on from improving this pathway”. As well as appointing Duff, the club has announced its other coaches: Lisa Johnstone will coach the B-grade side, Anne-Louise Lindner the under-19s, and Michelle Giddings will lead the C-graders. The club has also appointed Michael Fearn as a fitness coach. “The coaches we’ve appointed for the under-19s, C and B grades have a great deal of playing and coaching experience,” Duff said. “We’ve already achieved many positive changes but are just missing this one final A-grade head coach position. A coach who’s interested in helping us rebuild and can work

Rupertswood skipper John Lane said the decision to bat after winning the toss was a no-brainer, despite a slow outfield. “You are always going to bat first in a grand final,” he said. “It’s cricket 101 to have the runs on the board; each run is almost worth one and half. “Overnight we were in a pretty good position to launch to 250, 260, but we lost three for 30 early on day two. “The tail has been good all year but it didn’t pay off early on the second day … though 10 and 11 hung around and put on a bonus 20 or 30.” Rupertswood was bowled out for 211, Kyahl Anderson top-scoring with 76. “We had a day and a half to bat,” Lane said. “We had to work really hard for it. I was rapt with how everyone batted – no one really threw their wicket away despite there being a few cheap dismissals. “Mark Ryan faced more than 120 balls for his 20 runs and it really set us up for a 200-plus score.” Lane said his players were confident of restricting St Anthonys even before the run chase started. “It’s a tough ground to chase runs on,” he said. “I don’t think any side has chased down 200 here all season in B grade.” Rupertswood enjoyed a perfect start with the ball, having St Anthonys in trouble at 3-7. St Anthonys finished day two at 5-80 and still 132 runs from victory. “St Anthonys are a good bunch of boys to play against … they sort of live by the sword,” Lane said. “Sometimes it comes off and it really could have, considering our attack is reasonably slow. “Lucas [Alaimo], their ’keeper, kept them in the game. “He dug deep and did the right thing in shutting the game down to give his side a chance next week. “There’s a lot of pressure on these guys to bat through next week. Last time we went through them for 110.” Karl Sutherland claimed two wickets, while Aaron Forward, Lachlan McLean and Brandon Webber took one each.

with our coaching team to develop our players would be a massive plus.” The club is still after players across the board. “We have really strong numbers in the 19s age group and, since my appointment, six past players have come back to the club. It’s a positive trend we want to see continue,” Duff said. “We think there are some really good opportunities for players who were on the cusp of A-grade last year getting a chance to step up if we think they’re ready. “We would love to attract some more A-grade-quality players as we don’t want to place too much pressure on younger players.” Tara Murray
New coach puts faith in baby Bombers Youth will again be the key for Riddell in the Riddell District Football League this season. The Bombers, last year’s minor premiers, surprised many when their young side won 10 games straight during the season. But while they bowed out in straight sets in the finals, the signs were good. New coach Jamie Elliott said this year’s side was likely to be even younger. “We want to give kids coming through opportunities to play senior football,” said Elliott, who was assistant coach at Sunbury Lions last year. “There have been a lot of under-18s training every night and the likes of Matthew Panuccio, James Evans, Brandon Wilson and Lachlan Henson will play senior football this season.” The Bombers have also added more talent to the squad. Ben Said and Michael and Stephen Treweek have come across from Sunbury Lions, Ben Sonogan and Scott and Tim Walsh have joined from Gisborne, while Stephen Long and Guy Cilauro have moved from Westmeadows. The club has added a few talented younger players too, including Michael Sahlberg, brother of Bowen medallist Paul, and Essendon District Football League under-18.5 division 1 best and fairest winner Ben Nelson. Elliott is all praise for Sonogan, who is playing assistant coach this season. “He has been exceptional with the fitness side of things,” he said. “I don’t think he has been an assistant before. He’s a local boy coming back and he’s relishing the role.” On the other side of things, the Bombers have lost Matt Darby, Ethan Foreman, Jeremy Krojos and Ben Peters. Darby is still training with Essendon’s VFL side. “We’ve lost him for sure as he’s nominated an EDFL side as his home side,” Elliott said. On his return to the senior coaching role, Elliott said he loved being back at the helm of a footy club. “It’s been good and I’m really enjoying it. I love teaching kids,” he said. “The last two years I sat back and did a bit under Rick [Horwood, Sunbury Lions coach]. The Gisborne women’s cricket side has suffered grand final heartache for the second time this season. After losing the T20 final earlier in the season, the Dragons went down in Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cup Shield. The Dragons were looking for redemption against Mt Martha in the one-day final, instead, they were comprehensively beaten. Batting first, the Dragons were skittled for just 62. Youngster Georgia Kerr top-scored with 18. Mt Martha made the runs with eight wickets in hand.

Sherwood Knights will enter the Sunbury Softball men’s grand final on Sunday full of confidence after a massive 21-1 semi-final win over the Jackson Panthers. The Knights will take on the Sunbury Storm in the final. Storm won its semi-final against Goonawarriors 18-15. Jackson Panthers will face the Wildcats in the women’s final.

Golf goes back to back By Tara Murray Kyneton Golf Gold saved its best for last to clinch back-to-back wins in division 1 of Central Highlands Bowls. Golf went in to Saturday’s grand final against Gisborne as underdogs after losing the semi-final between the two teams. But it was a different story this time, with Mark Andrews, Wayne Turner and Anthony Mathison winning their rinks as Golf clinched the title 96-74.

Golf secretary John Trounce said he thought experience would count. “[Gisborne] had a great year and they cleaned us up in the semi-final,” he said. “We tweaked our side a little bit and we thought finals experience could help … grand finals are a bit different and you get a good crowd there.

New coach, new faces, new approach for fired-up Jets Pre-season signs have been positive . . . now the Sunbury Jets are ready to take to the court in Big V women’s division 1. It has been a big off-season for the team, with the arrival of New Zealand women’s coach Kennedy Kereama and several signings to strengthen the side. “For me, it’s been good with the new group,” coach Kereama said last week. “It’s been about trying to change the direction of the club. They have been down the bottom of the ladder the last few years. “We have a new coach [himself] and want to implement a new culture and new systems.” Despite significant changes to the Jets’ list, Kereama says the transition has been smooth. “The local girls have been really welcoming,” he said. “They all want to learn, which is
important in reshaping the program, and they’re soaking it all up. Everyone has shown glimpses and they’re all unique in their own way. “The girls need role models who can show them what they can do. We’ve now got players who have played in the WNBL and are semiprofessional players who can be that.” Kereama says he expects players already at the club to play big roles this season. “I’ve been really happy with Kayla Theodore,” he said. “We played Diamond Valley [a state championship side] and beat them by four points and she made some really good plays, as did everyone else. “Naomi Stevens, who has been playing mostly youth league, has the potential to play a good role and Genevieve McCorkell has spent

most of the pre-season injured but is looking at a big role.” The Jets have also announced the signing of Chelsea Burns, who has been training with them for about two months. She will be the Jets’ most experienced player, having played WNBL, represented Australia at the World Uni Games, captained Victoria at state level and played SEABL for 10 years. “Chelsea was chased by other clubs, including SEABL clubs,” Kereama said. “We’re very lucky to have her and she keeps me honest as a coach.
Barker saves his Burras By Tara Murray Honours were shared on the opening two days of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup grand final. The Diggers Rest Bulla players showed no nerves as they chased a first McIntyre Cup title for the club, and they were in control early against Gisborne. Playing coach Kevin Barker came out firing, reaching his century within 24 overs. Once his innings of 118 ended, the Burras struggled to get runs. They were 7-205 after day one. The Dragons grabbed the last three wickets for 10 runs on Sunday to dismiss the Burras for 215. Jay King was the pick of the bowlers with 4-53 off 25 overs. The Dragons struggled early and looked in trouble at 5-93. A late partnership between Tahir Afridi and playing coach Simon Harmon ensured the Dragons got back in the game and at stumps, they were 5-129 with Afridi 22 not out and Harmon on 20. Skipper Jarryd Vernon made 25. Barker said the late partnership between Afridi and Harmon had put the game back on even terms. “They put together a little partnership, which was disappointing for us,” he said. “We thought if we could get one or two more quick wickets we’d get into the tail a bit. “But that’s cricket finals – there’s always fight from both sides.” Barker said the Burras would have been happy to post 215 at the start of the innings but then would have liked a few more runs after the promising start. He said it was personally satisfying to post a good score after enduring a patchy season to date after returning to the GDCA from sub-district cricket. “I got a few away and got on a roll and things went my way,” he said. “Personally, it wasn’t the season I wanted to have, but it’s good to score a century … yet it doesn’t mean anything now if we don’t get the win. “From the position we were in I would have liked a few more runs. We will back our bowlers in to do the job.” As for much of the season, the Burras’ bowlers shared the workload and the honours. Lindon Dowsett took two wickets, while three bowlers took one each. Barker said early wickets would be the key to restricting the Dragons on Saturday. “They fought hard to stop us to get a roll on,” he said. “There’s a new ball 15 overs away – it will be a good contest.”

She’s earned their trust in a short period of time.” Leanne Urbon was voted vice-captain but will miss the season after hurting her knee. She will still play a big role off court and on the bench. The Jets kick off their season at home against Geelong on Saturday night. “Our goal is to win the division 1 competition this season while building a program that can then go on to win at Big V championship level,” Kereama said. “I’m confident that with our recruitment, local retention and pre-season training we’re on track.” Tara Murray
Jets in future mode as Big V season looms For the Sunbury Jets’ Big V men’s division 1 basketball side, the coming season is about setting the foundations for the years to come. With a predominantly local list and all but one player aged 23 or under, Jets’ new coach Andrew Summerville says this season will be one of transition in which expectations are significantly based on key performance indicators and the ability to improve and nurture players. “I’m trying to focus on where we plan to be in two to three years’ time,” he said. “This year’s about changing the culture and laying some foundations for the next couple of years.” Summerville said that with the exception of imports Ish Sanders and Mitchell Newton, most fans would be familiar with the Jets players. “There’s a lot of familiar faces, but it’s not the exact same team as last year when we had a lot of youth league guys floating between the senior and youth sides. “This year they’ve probably secured their spot in the senior team.” Summerville highlighted Nathan Baker, Billy Feben and Brad Collins as three players who will make the transition. “We’ve got a couple of young guys and if we’re patient with them and nurture them in the right way, they will be good players in a few years’ time,” he said. “They’re not ready to shoulder the responsibility of being the go-to players, but if we can manage them over the next year or two they’ll be a special group.” Aden Muir, who was a finalist in the youth league division 1 MVP race in 2014 with the Jets, has returned to the club this season and will play in the men’s team. Among the players not returning are Luke Valentine, who’s set to play in championship division, Sammy Gazzo, Javari Williams and Ben Jones. Summerville says he’s been impressed by the leadership skills displayed by Newton and Sanders. “Ish is a scoring machine [he hit 41 points in a pre-season game] and a great leader around the group,” he said. “Mitch is only 20 and has already played in three NZNBL championship teams with really high-calibre players.” The coach says the experience and maturity of Newton is impressive for a player of his age. “He has a bright future.” Tara Murray
