Train backdown: passengers win
Roos rescued Wildlife volunteers have been praised after rescuing four kangaroos trapped in an uncovered mineshaft near Trentham. The two-hour operation began after bushwalkers noticed the nose of a kangaroo appearing from a hole in Wombat State Forest about 6.30pm on November 22. A team from Five Freedoms Animal Rescue was called to help pull the native animals to safety. Operator Manfred Zabinskas said he was amazed that the kangaroo had been able to get up high enough to be seen. ‘‘It was really weird because that shaft was five to six metres deep,’’ he said. ‘‘Basically they were just walking through the forest and they saw this kangaroo’s nose poking up from the hole. “They went to investigate and found there were three other kangaroos down there.’’ Mr Zabinskas said the incident was made more unusual because the mineshaft was partially covered by a fallen tree. ‘‘It’s not really in an open position,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s almost like the kangaroos went
for shelter under this fallen tree and they’ve slipped in. How all four have slipped in is beyond me.’’ He said the roos’ condition indicated they had been down the shaft for at least 24 hours. ‘‘They were pretty beat up,” he said. “The biggest problem we had was that one of the kangaroos was really large, a male about 80 kilograms, and he was jumping to try and escape. It looks like he’s landed on top of the other kangaroos each time he did that.’’ One of the animals, a female, had to be euthanased due to serious injuries including a broken tail, exposed bone and damage to internal organs. ‘‘A joey’s got a few broken bits including wrists and ribs while the other male seemed to have mostly superficial injuries,” Mr Zabinskas said. “They’re now being taken care of and we’re reasonably confident they will do OK.’’ The rescue prompted an outpouring of support on social media, with animal lovers applauding the rescuers and the bushwalkers who found the kangaroos. Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network data shows 1292 kangaroos were rescued by volunteers last year, up from 1064 in 2013.

Sunbury and Diggers Rest commuters will be able to access 73 new Metro train services a week and continue to board most V/Line services after the state government backed down from hotly contested public transport changes. During a visit to Sunbury station on Friday, Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said that from January 1 passengers would be able to board all but two V/Line services – the packed 4.25pm and 5.04pm weekday trains. All Metro trains from 7pm will also be extended to Diggers Rest and Sunbury. The extra Metro services are in addition to 10 peak services added earlier this year. ‘‘In just over a month, locals will have more than 80 extra Metro services and access to almost every V/Line train that stops at Sunbury or Diggers Rest,’’ Ms Allan said. The latest changes follow a long-running saga in which commuters and community leaders slammed the government for ‘‘ripping’’ 200 V/Line services out of the town. Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn said the reversal of the changes was a major victory for Sunbury. ‘‘Together we have fought hard and together we have won,’’ he said. As reported by Star Weekly, a controversial timetable announced by Public Transport Victoria in May removed Sunbury as a pick-up station for Bendigo trains travelling to Melbourne in the morning peak. It also removed Sunbury as a drop-off station for evening peak trains going north. Both the Liberal and Labor parties had promised commuters continuity of services following electrification of the line to Sunbury in 2012. A major survey completed by the Sunbury Train Association, which was formed following an outpouring of complaints, found many commuters would be negatively affected by the planned restrictions. More than 200 people attended a public meeting in Sunbury involving Ms Allan in October. On Friday, she said the latest changes meant Sunbury passengers would have the best of both worlds. ‘‘It’s a big win for passengers and shows the importance of having a government that listens and invests in public transport,’’ she said.

Steep rents put tenants under stress Many Sunbury and Macedon Ranges households are forking out more than 30 per cent of their income for rent, Australia’s first rental affordability index reveals. The report, prepared by national economics and community banking groups, listed Kyneton and Woodend among towns where rents were unaffordable, with the average tenant spending almost a third of their weekly budget on housing. The report stated this was defined as ‘‘housing stress’’, affecting tenants’ ability to also pay for food, water, school and power bills.
While average rents in Sunbury, Gisborne, Riddells Creek, Romsey and Lancefield were considered to be generally affordable, CareWorks SunRanges manager Michael Austin said many renters were under significant financial pressure. Mr Austin said job losses and increases in housing costs and living expenses were leading to more people seeking help from organisations such as the Sunbury-based support service. Figures show CareWorks helped 1215 clients in the year to October, up from 1189 in 2014. ‘‘Those trying to manage on small incomes,
or on income support, are definitely finding it hard, and rent is a major part of that,’’ he said. ‘‘We do have people come in who are all up to date with their bills, but the rent is taking such a large amount that they’ve got no money for things like food and petrol.’’ Mr Austin said it was crucial that people who found themselves drowning financially sought help early. Cyclist ‘honked’ after hit By Matt Crossman Bicycle safety campaigners have pleaded with motorists to look out for cyclists and pass them with care after a Riddells Creek teen was hit by a car. Bike Safe Macedon Ranges has also repeated calls to increase funding for awareness initiatives and a feasibility study for an off-road path between Riddells Creek and Gisborne. Dana Frew said her son Darcy, 16, was riding home on Somerville Lane, near Sandy Creek Road, when he was knocked off his bike by a dirty, white Ford Falcon sedan. ‘‘While my son lay on the side of the road, the driver honked his horn and drove off,’’ Ms Frew said in a Facebook post that has been shared at least 100 times since November 18. She told Star Weekly that while a majority of drivers respected cyclists, ‘‘there are some idiots out there that think it’s acceptable to play with people’s lives’’. Darcy suffered some scratches and bruises, but apart from taking a hit to his confidence is otherwise okay. ‘‘We were lucky it was a clear bit of the road,’’ Ms Frew said. Ms Frew, who reported the incident to police, said it appeared to have been a deliberate act. ‘‘He was on a small side road and he could hear a car coming up behind him quite slowly, so he had a quick look to see where it was,’’ Ms Frew said. ‘‘He figured because it was going so slow, it was going to turn, cause he was near a crossroad. ‘‘He didn’t take too much note of it … the next thing he knew he was on the ground. ‘‘It just makes us very conscious that there are dangers out there on the road, even if your children are very careful.’’ Macedon Ranges highway patrol Sergeant Geoff Neil said people had to be courteous of others, regardless of their mode of transport. ‘‘We’re in an area that cyclists enjoy riding in, and motorists and other road users, generally, share that space,’’ he said. Bike Safe secretary Amanda Calvert said some drivers weren’t getting the message.

Government takes heat over Lancefield fire The release of an independent investigation into October’s Lancefield-Cobaw bushfire has led to heated debate in State Parliament. Labor and Liberal MPs went back and forth last week after the inquiry found the 266-hectare planned burn that ignited on September 30 had been “inadequately resourced” from the start. The burn broke containment lines on October 3 and again on October 6. Close to 3000 hectares were eventually burnt. Four houses, 25 sheds and thousands of kilometres of fencing were destroyed. Opposition leader Matthew Guy last week asked why Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning secretary Adam Fennessy was in Lancefield to apologise to residents on November 19, not Premier Daniel Andrews, despite many previous visits to the town. Mr Andrews said the government had never shied away from the fact that things had gone wrong. ‘‘We are deeply sorry for the fact that errors were made,’’ he said. ‘‘There were 22 recommendations, and every single one of them will be implemented.’’ Responding to complaints about insurance processing, Mr Andrews said 58 claims had been lodged, with 15 payments ready to be made last week. ‘‘The rest will be dealt with as quickly as possible.’’ Gembrook MP Brad Battin took aim at Environment Minister Lisa Neville, who previously said the grand final Friday public holiday had no impact on staffing decisions. The inquiry found 12 staff were rostered for the controlled burn on October 2, compared to 30 the day before. Ms Neville said the report made clear that risk assessment was flawed from the start. ‘‘They under-estimated the risk, and that went to the question of resources,’’ she said. ‘‘It is not a question about grand final Friday at all.’’ In a statement, Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said what happened with the planned burn was unacceptable. ‘‘Many residents and families are still dealing with the consequences,’’ she said, vowing to monitor the implementation of the report’s recommendations. High winds stirred up large clouds of smoke near the area affected by October’s Lancefield bushfire. Firefighting trucks and a helicopter were deployed after logs within the burnt area began smouldering again last Wednesday. Authorities said patrols of the area will continue. Firefighters from towns as far away as Sunbury and Diggers Rest also responded to private burnoffs at Mount Macedon and Gisborne, which also reignited due to the strong winds. The CFA warned people to check old burnoff piles.

Stuck truck causes gridlock By Matt Crossman Another incident involving the boom gates at Gap Road in Sunbury has reignited calls for a third railway crossing in town. Police expect to charge a truck driver after a boom gate was broken when he stopped halfway across the crossing, leading to major traffic and train delays on Wednesday. Motorists were stuck at the crossing for almost an hour after the incident took place about 4pm and rail services were disrupted
well into the night. Witnesses said the truck driver appeared to have been impatient with congestion caused by the notorious roundabout at Gap Road and Horne Street. ‘‘Instead of waiting until he had clearance, he decided to try hurry the cars in front,’’ said one motorist, who did not want to be named. ‘‘He stopped halfway across the tracks and when the boomgate went down, it got stuck on his roof. “He decided to reverse back but ripped it in half.’’
Sunbury Residents Association has previously called for a third railway crossing, towards Vineyard Road, to ease traffic congestion. As reported by Star Weekly in October, the intersection and crossing were not mentioned in VicRoads’ latest priority list. Association president Bernie O’Farrell said Thursday’s incident was further proof urgent action was needed. ‘‘We’ve been campaigning for at least 15 years,’’ he said. ‘‘They keep saying it will be considered
but nothing gets done. With the population growing, they’ve got to get on with it.’’ About 27,000 vehicles travel on Horne Street each day and 18,000 on Gap Road. Vehicle numbers and boom gates at the level crossing 200 metres south of the intersection result in significant traffic disruptions, especially during school and work peak hours. A spokesman for Roads Minister Luke Donnellan last month denied there had been indecision about the intersection, pointing to a $15,000 planning study that began in June.

Sunbury residents can find the perfect Christmas tree and help local young people by supporting an annual scout fundraiser. The 1st and 3rd Sunbury Scout groups are teaming up to provide freshly cut trees, with deliveries from this Saturday. Orders are being taken for trees from 1.5 metres to 2.5 metres. Scout leader Marlo Aisbett says proceeds will give youth the chance to attend January’s national Jamboree in Sydney. ‘‘There could be 10-15 Scouts heading off to that, but it isn’t cheap at about $2000 per child,’’
she said. ‘‘Events like this give us the chance to help families meet costs so more kids can attend.’’ Trees, from $45 to $70 each, can be ordered at the Scout hall in Miller Street or at Bunnings this Saturday and Sunday. Sunbury scores own result card
By Matt Crossman Restaurateurs and shopkeepers believe that a Sunbury street’s reputation as a premier dining precinct will spread far and wide following a $2.1 million redevelopment. Fairy lights installed in trees along O’Shanassy Street were switched on last Friday night, with Hume council and business owners celebrating efforts to encourage people to spend more time, and money, in the area. Carmel Scerri, of Vic’s Food and Wine, said upgrades, including new footpaths, a second pedestrian crossing and landscaping, had transformed the street. ‘‘O’Shanassy Street used to be referred to as the dark little sister of Evans Street … that’s no longer,’’ she said. ‘‘When people think of Sunbury now, they think of the restaurants in O’Shanassy Street.’’ Powerlines have been moved underground, and kerbs and drainage upgraded as part of the project. Wider paths will give traders more room for outdoor tables, umbrellas and chairs. The council has also approved new policies to allow businesses to set up permanent structures. Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said the lights would help showcase the mature elms that are a prominent part of the street. ‘‘They will create a wonderful ambience as residents dine, and will also leave a positive impression in the minds of visitors,’’ she said. ‘‘Hume’s recent works will help the Sunbury street be one of the truly great restaurant strips.’’ Ms Scerri said while works had been an inconvenience for shoppers and businesses, the gains would be significant. ‘‘Before, people would say we can’t get in here or can’t get in there, well we’ll just go to Melbourne,’’ she said. ‘‘Now we’ve got a lot of really good restaurants … it draws them all in.’’

The state government has been handed some poor marks in a post-election report card from the Sunbury Residents Association (SRA). But Sunbury Labor MP Josh Bull has released a list of his own, saying the 12 months since the state election had been a ‘‘long year of hard work and great accomplishment’’. Not surprisingly, the pro-split SRA marked the government down for its decision to accept the advice of independent auditors and reverse legislation that would have given Sunbury its own council. ‘‘Broken promise – Labor said in November 2014 they supported Sunbury out of Hume,’’ the report card said. The SRA said the government also failed by allowing changes that bar Sunbury passengers from catching V/ Line services, and criticised perceived inaction about the closed Victoria University campus at Jacksons Hill. The government was given a B for $3 million in future funding for a science wing at Sunbury College, an A for the Melbourne Metro rail project, and an A+ for cheaper zone 2 public transport fares. Mr Bull again defended the decision to abandon the Sunbury split, saying other achievements include the $1.3 billion Tullamarine Freeway widening, an extra $2 million for Sunbury schools and a $2.3 million upgrade of Riddell Road. ‘‘This government has kept its word,’’ Mr Bull said. A very healthy outlook By Matt Crossman ‘‘We’re trying our damndest to do what’s best for our town and we’re doing it extremely well.’’ That’s the philosophy outgoing Sunbury Community Health chairwoman Mary Rush says led to the organisation being recognised as the premier’s primary health service of the year. News of the major state award added to the celebratory feel of the service’s 40th annual meeting last week. Ms Rush, who will remain on the board, said that while waves of population growth posed challenges, the award win was proof SCH was meeting community needs. ‘‘We believe we’ve been an award-winning centre for all 40 years,’’ she said. ‘‘When you actually sit down and assess your organisation … our application was amazing in that we do so many of the things the government wants health services to do.’’ With the support of more than 200 staff and volunteers, SCH provides a long list of programs and services, ranging from early intervention and dental to counselling, walking groups, diabetes education and aged care. Ms Rush said partnerships with Hume council, the government’s Healthy Together program and Sunbury Business Association continued to help the service foster health-affirming factors such as strong families, social cohesion and mental health, as well as fight the prevalence of risks such as obesity, tobacco, alcohol and drug use, family violence, problem gambling and vulnerabilities arising from low incomes or ageing. ‘‘I’m most proud of how we are a very strong values-based organisation,’’ she said. ‘‘Our philosophy is all about connecting with the community – we not only say it, we do it.’’
Briefs Tribute for asbestos campaigner
A Macedon Ranges resident’s efforts to advocate for those suffering from mesothelioma were applauded in federal parliament during Asbestos Awareness Week. McEwen MP Rob Mitchell said while asbestos had been banned since 2003, about 1350 cases of lung cancer caused by the material were diagnosed every year. He said Lou Williams, who lost her father to mesothelioma and has herself battled the disease for the past 13 years, was ‘‘one tough fighter’’, who continued to push hard for new medications to be added to the pharmaceutical benefits scheme.

Parking plan short on support By Alexandra Laskie A plan to ask Hume residents to pay more than $1200 to install a car parking space in narrow streets has been labelled “unjust” and a knee-jerk reaction. Broadmeadows Progress Association member Sonja Rutherford said Hume council had failed to inform the group of its draft parking in narrow streets policy, or of an online survey asking for community feedback. The survey closed on Monday. The draft policy was created to address
parking shortfalls on some of Hume’s narrow estate streets where parking on either side of the street blocks through traffic. It also aims to stop residents from parking on nature strips, which is illegal under the Victorian Road Safety Road Rules (2009). The draft policy includes options to address parking shortfalls, including installing restricted bays on one side of a road or, where the demand for on-street parking exceeds the space that is available, installing indented parking on one side of the street. Half of the cost of the parking bays would
be paid for by the council, and the other half by property owners. The cost of a single bay is about $2500. “My mouth dropped … I couldn’t believe it,” Ms Rutherford said after having read the policy. “They’re just side-stepping the issue and passing it onto landowners. It’s not the responsibility of the existing landowner, and people won’t be able to afford it. “This is just a knee-jerk reaction to a very serious problem,” Ms Rutherford said. The Broadmeadows resident said the issue in Hume was due to developers being given
planning approval to build roads that are too narrow for cars to park either side. She said multi-unit developers are also building without adequate parking spaces. Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell said the council had failed to inform his association of its draft policy. He said there might be some residents prepared to pay for indented parking bays. “But in my view, most people would object.” Hume council’s acting city infrastructure director David Fricke said council is happy to talk about on-street parking options.
Paintings, pottery and jewellery will go on show as part of the Phoenix Macedon Ranges Art and Craft Group’s annual Christmas exhibition. Textiles and woodwork created by group members will also be displayed at the old Gisborne courthouse from Friday evening until Sunday. Sunbury artist and potter Michelle Beveridge has spent the past eight years honing her skills with the group, which was formed in the wake of the Ash Wednesday fires. ‘‘I started off doing ceramics, but wanted to have more creative control,’’ she says. Beveridge, one of seven Sunbury artists involved this year, has also become an accomplished painter after delving into her creative side later in life. ‘‘I just love it … it’s my favourite thing to do.’’ All work exhibited at the show is for sale. Prices buoyed by lifestyle choice By Matt Crossman Property prices at Gisborne jumped 26.8 per cent in the year to September, new data released by Domain Group senior economist Andrew Wilson reveals. Gisborne had the second-highest percentage jump across Melbourne’s west, behind Strathmore and ahead of Williams Landing and Aberfeldie. The median price in Gisborne increased to $567,500, putting it ahead of many suburbs in
the city’s west and south-east. Domain’s figures follow Real Estate Institute of Victoria data, and shows median prices at Gisborne, Kyneton and Woodend performed particularly well in the September quarter. Veteran agent John Dunlop, of Gisborne’s Brad Teal Real Estate, said lifestyle continued to be a major drawcard. The agency has had a strong spring, moving about three or four properties every week. ‘‘It’s been very busy. What we’re finding is many people are going for quality, as much as
size,’’ Mr Dunlop said. New estates in towns such as Romsey are also proving popular, with eight houses sold in one day during last month’s opening of the Lomandra development. A lack of stock is being felt at Sunbury, but Mr Dunlop said things in the Macedon Ranges were unlikely to slow greatly in the lead-up to Christmas. Gisborne Real Estate director Janis Paul said while there was plenty of interest in the Gisborne market, it was vital that houses were priced correctly.
‘‘If it’s not, they can sit there for what seems like forever,’’ she said. ‘‘The difference between asking price and actual sale price now is pretty close.’’ Ms Paul said houses priced at more than $600,000 were a lot harder to sell. ‘‘People have to remember we cannot ask Melbourne prices, because buyers will just go to Melbourne,’’ she said. ‘‘They will only pay so much for a lifestyle, especially if they’ve got to go an hour each way in traffic.’’

MY PLACE Danish by birth, Hanne Juul moved to Carlsruhe from Melbourne 21 years ago. The 70-year-old is one of hundreds of people who will be celebrated by Macedon Ranges council during its annual volunteers dinner this Tuesday. She tells Matt Crossman that becoming a volunteer was one of the best decisions she’s made. Which community groups are you currently involved in? I am the secretary for the Friends of Kyneton Museum, secretary of the Carlsruhe Landcare Group, newly appointed secretary of the Upper Campaspe Landcare Network, fundraising member for Carlsruhe CFA and co-ordinator of the Kyneton Antique and Vintage Fair. I also volunteer at the Macedon Ranges Tourist Information Centre in Kyneton and about 18 months ago I was asked by a good friend of mine if I would come to Melbourne twice monthly to help out at Sacred Heart’s dining room in St Kilda.
What do you get out of volunteering? It keeps me young and active. I would hate to go stale in mind and body. I am very fond of all the people I am involved with and it is great fun.

How do you manage to fit so much in? I was 65 when I started my career in volunteering. When I think about it, it looks like I am doing quite a lot, but the day has 24 hours. I try not to panic and have allocated certain hours in a day to do most of the secretarial work for three of the organisations. If there’s an executive meeting, it mostly happens at one of our wonderful cafes in Kyneton, and who doesn’t like a good cup of coffee or a delicious light lunch. I like people and after I retired, I thought to myself that if I didn’t get out of the house I would go crazy. HANNE JUUL AND HER DOGS KARLA AND TYR
What would your advice be to anyone who wants to help but doesn’t know where to start? It can be hard if you have a full-time job and
have to commute to work every day, but try who volunteer who get a lot of satisfaction in a couple of hours over the weekend or even helping out where needed. There are so many during the evening. I know of uni students organisations that need you.

Over the course of an average week in private practice, physiotherapists see many injury presentations in the clinic related to chronic overuse or poorly structured exercise programs. When commencing any exercise program, it is essential that the program is progressive and specific to your goals and needs. For example, it is looking for trouble if you do not have a resistance training (RT) background, to suddenly begin a random program you have seen online that the “professionals” use. An example of this would be suddenly starting a RT program 5 days per week and working in a 2-4 repetition range without giving thought to sensible and gradual progressions. This is ultimately a recipe for injury. This concept does not only apply for RT, but any forms of training, including running. One of the most common overuse injuries we see in the clinic is shin splints that have resulted from a person not having run in years, but then suddenly starting a running program 5 days a week, 30-40 minutes per session. From an injury management and prevention perspective, it would be helpful if you ask yourself the following questions before commencing any exercise program: 1) Is the program specific and functional to my goals and needs? In many cases, it does not make sense for many people trying to improve their health and fitness, to be doing RT 5 days per week in the 2-4 repetition range as the risks generally outweigh the benefits. Training less frequently and with slightly lighter weights / higher reps would be a better option. 2) Is the program structured in a progressive manner? That is, is the intensity level of the program being gradually built up, rather than overloading the body with too much too quickly? 3) Is the program suitable at this stage to my build and body type? For example, if you are several kilograms overweight, it may make sense to limit running to no more than 2-3 days per week in the early stages, and attempting to lose some weight via other lesser impact activities such as swimming or stationary bike. 4. Have I sought the input of a suitably qualified health professional to help me structure an appropriate program?
Step up and step lively Now that it’s officially summer strappy sundresses and shorts dominate the wardrobe but, the idea of shedding winter weight can be a daunting one. The good news is, it’s never too late to start on the road to a healthier you. And with the sun out longer, you can use this as motivation to update your fitness regimes and get beach-ready. Here are some tips to help you spring into shape this summer. 1. Rain, hail or shine, don’t sacrifice your training regime. Maintaining good training habits can ensure you stay in shape. If an early morning run is not your thing, signing up to a gym to train can ensure you never miss a work-out session.
2. Reduce your amount of sitting. Doctors recommend you shouldn’t sit for more than three hours per day, so preventing long times seated can ensure you burn a few extra calories. 3. Give it time. Everybody wants fast results, but remember you won’t see results overnight. Depending on where you start, it could take a few weeks; just remember not to let a lack of immediate results discourage you from continuing. Dedication will eventually see changes and when you do, your confidence and motivation will boost you to new levels. Eleanor Tabone

If finance has not already been secured, this is the time to go to your bank. “The good news is that obtaining finance doesn’t have to be as stressful as people think”, says Mr Sanfilippo. “A professional mortgage consultant can map out your finances and help you find the best home loan. First-home buyers can also take advantage of the first-home owner grant to give them a leg-up with finance.” Step 2 – colour selections This is when you are able to make decisions on all external and internal colours, fittings, fixtures and electrical selections. “While it can be stressful, a good place to start is with display homes. Have a look around and take note of what kind of colours and finishes that you like.” Step 3 – contract, permits and ordering These are the most complex stages where all contract documentation is cross-checked against the final tender, colour and electrical selections and drawings, before being given to you to sign. “During the building stage, milestones to look out for are the slab pouring, framing, lock-up, fixing and completion,” Mr Sanfilippo says. “Factors such as heavy rain, heat waves and seasonal holidays may extend your build time.”

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir delves into some chicken with a difference... Hoppers Crossing guitar lesson done, we’re headed up Morris Road to Tarneit – in a sufficiently reckless mood that a regulation, delicious but naughty feed from a chook shop will go down nicely. But we’re quietly hoping for something better – something even more tasty and perhaps even more healthy. A touch of the Middle East perhaps? Flames Charcoal Chicken looks out upon Wyndham Village shopping centre, home to a recently arrived Dosa Hut outlet, and is right next door to the recently reviewed Somalian joint, Ya Salam. Turns out this Flames shop is one of four – there’s two others in the west and one in Bundoora. I’m told the others are more your typical charcoal chicken shop routines. But the Tarneit establishment – oh happy day! – does indeed sport a heavy Middle Eastern influence. There’s wraps and rolls in the mix – but there’s also good salads, pickles and meat on sticks waiting to be grilled. What we have is fine – significantly better than average fast food but not quite up to the standards of a full-on Lebanese place. The prices, though, are very low. It’s set out rather nicely as a restaurant proper, our meals are served on wooden platters and we use real cutlery. Bennie chooses the “chicken with the lot deal” ($16.90).

His chook is fine, though not displaying much by way of the two listed seasonings. All the rest – yogurt dip, pickles, chips and very tasty tabouleh – is good. My shawarma meal ($12.90) comes with the same accompaniments, save for chips. I wish there was more lamb off the spit – and would happily pay for it. Because this lamb is wonderful – tender, profoundly tasty and skillfully seasoned. Locals will surely love having Flames around. It delivers a tasty, above average fast-food hit at good prices.

SPORT Women’s footy launches into regional competition A regional division of the Victorian Women’s Football League will be in place next season. The joint venture is being set up by AFL Victoria, AFL Goldfields and the VWFL. This latest comes on the back of extraordinary growth in the women’s game at both senior women’s and youth girls’ levels. Six teams are targeted for the inaugural year of the regional competition. The sides will be a collection of newly formed teams and existing sides from the lower grades of established clubs. The competition will remain under the management and control of the VWFL in the first year, but then transfer to AFL Goldfields
for its second year and onwards. AFL Goldfields region general manager Rod Ward said the move was an exciting development, and a reflection of the level of interest female football has created in the region. “To think that in 2011, we started with four youth girls’ teams in the Ballarat FNL, and now we have 13 youth and four junior girls’ teams, is just extraordinary,” he said. “Combine that with the growth of female football in junior competitions, our region has had the most significant increase in participation in female football in Australia over the past five years.
“The creation of a regional senior women’s competition is the natural progression, and we are extremely excited to be one of the first in Victoria for this to occur.” The newly formed league adds to the exciting off-season women’s football is experiencing. AFL Victoria also plans to establish a women’s state league competition in 2016. The new competition will be aligned with the Victorian Football League and will have 10 clubs in its inaugural year. The western suburbs will be represented by VU Western Spurs. The official name of the competition, as well as the season’s length and the finals format,
will be decided in the coming months. AFL Goldfields is holding an information session next on December 9, at Saxon House from 6.30pm. The session will provide clubs and members with information on the league’s blueprint to grow female football in the region. Any club interested in fielding open-aged teams in the new competition is asked to contact AFL Victoria’s Darren Flanigan on 8341 6000. Romsey comes out to play By Tara Murray When Romsey takes to the cricket field this season you don’t know which side will turn up, the good or the bad. Romsey has made the most inconsistent start to Gisborne Cricket’s McIntyre Cup, with two wins, a tie, a first-innings loss and an outright loss. Captain-coach Chris Burkett said consistency was something the side had been trying to address. “As I was saying to the boys, when we play good we play pretty good cricket. When we play bad it’s really bad,” he said. “We have to find something in between and play consistent cricket. In the game against Diggers Rest [an outright loss] we didn’t expect to lose the game and our batting was really poor. We needed a bit more fight.” On Saturday, the good Romsey came to play and beat Woodend at home.
Romsey made 199 in its first innings, Matt Burkett top-scoring with 58, after bowling out Woodend for 167. The visitors were 4-18 in the second innings when stumps were drawn. The skipper and star batsman said one thing that was different from last season was that there was more options with the bat. Burkett made a duck at the weekend, but it didn’t matter as four other batsmen got starts. “I’d rather make a duck each week if it means we get the win,” Burkett said during the week. “Matt [Burkett] is going quite well and Ben Way at the top of the order is another who is making runs.” The improvement of Romsey, who struggled last season, has come from within, as the side has stuck with pretty much the same line-up. Way, who was playing with Premier Cricket club Melbourne, is the only new face. “We lost a couple of players, with a few kids going to town to test themselves,” Burkett said.

“I did it as a kid and it’s a good thing to do. “We played a 16-year-old, Daniel Paterson, this week and he deserved his chance.” Burkett said Romsey would continue to mix it with the top sides. “Our bowling has been good but our catching has been letting us down,” he said. “We want to be competitive against the better sides.” In a confidence boost for the club, Romsey has made the finals of the T20 competition. “We didn’t play our best cricket but we stuck with it,” Burkett said. “We were missing a few players and a few guys in the team who aren’t T20 players put their hands up. “I think we’re in with a rough chance to go further.” In other McIntyre Cup results, Diggers Rest Bulla defeated Sunbury, Riddell smashed Sunbury United and Gisborne was too good for Bacchus Marsh.
Riddells Creek’s junior football club is looking for more budding players for its youth girls football team for next season. The Bombers have had a youth girls side for the past four years in the Ballarat Football League’s youth competition, and like the sport, the team has grown each year. Bombers’ youth girls coach David Broadfoot said the club wanted to grow its girls program. “It’s growing more popular every year, and the team is such a vital part of the sporting community for girls in Riddells Creek between the ages of 13 and 18. “We’ve had girls who have represented the league and have been part of the Calder Cannons’ program.” “Recently, the club has invested a large sum of money into building a girls’ only change room, which shows the support and belief from the club they have in the youth girls team,” Broadfoot said. “This year, the team had about 13 players. They finished ninth on the ladder with three wins. “[But] it’s hard to get players, as we are stuck in the middle of two big towns [Gisborne and Sunbury], which also have girls’ teams. “We are hoping to attract girls from the Macedon, Romsey and surrounding areas to add to the girls from Riddells Creek who want to play,” he said. “We’d like at least another three to four players for next season. “The football ground is close to bus stops and the train station; it makes it easier.” The Bombers play games on Sundays and train Wednesday and Friday nights. Broadfoot said the league worked hard to reduce the amount of travel. “Tim Shearer and Aaron Nunn [from the Ballarat Football League] have been really fantastic with the competition. Sunbury Little Athletics Centre won three gold medals at the Northern Metropolitan Region Relay Championships last weekend. The under-15 boys team won gold medals in the 800 metres medley relay and the 4 x 200 metres relay events. They also won bronze in the 4 x 100 metres relay. The under-11 boys 4 x 200 metres relay team also won gold.

Sione Ah Kuoi has been named new coach of Sunbury Tigers Rugby League club. Sione, who has played at the Tigers for the past five years, has coached the Tigers’ under-14s and under-16s teams to premiership success. He has also coached in Christchurch.

Sunbury Jets have announced their first signing for next year’s men’s Big V season, with New Zealander Mitchell Newton joining the club. Newton played the past four years with Southland Sharks in the New Zealand National Basketball League, where he has been part of two championship-winning teams. He has also represented New Zealand in a team that toured the Philippines and Taiwan under the banner of the Wellington Saints NZNBL. Cannon gets it right By Tara Murray After missing out on selection in last week’s AFL national draft, Nick O’Kearney had every reason to be disappointed. The Calder Cannons and Keilor midfielder has long been considered a prospective AFL player and was surprisingly overlooked on Tuesday night. “It was a little disappointing as I’d put everything into it,” O’Kearney said. “But I didn’t have any regrets and I had to move on and look to the next chapter, which was the rookie draft.” And he didn’t have to wait long in the rookie draft to see his name, as St Kilda took him with pick five. “I’m relieved; it’s been a hectic few days,” he said. “It was good to see my name so early in the draft and to not be sitting on edge like the other night.
“To get calls from the coach and others at St Kilda is really good.” O’Kearney knew the Saints were interested in him, as they and Adelaide contacted him in between the two drafts. “On Wednesday morning, after the clubs got back from Adelaide, I got a phone call from St Kilda asking if I was home and that they would be straight around to my place to talk,” O’Kearney said. “I spoke with them two or three times on the phone and Adelaide called me a couple of times saying they were interested but didn’t think I would be around when they had a pick. There was a lot of support from Adelaide, telling me to keep my head up.” O’Kearney didn’t have long to get his head around being drafted as he headed to a Saints training camp in Queensland on Sunday. He was one of three Cannons players selected in the rookie draft after the team failed to have anyone picked in the national draft.
Callum Moore was selected by Richmond at pick 12, while Tom Wallis joined Essendon under the father-son rule. Cannons talent manager Ian Kyte said the three boys deserved to be selected. “It’s probably where we thought we’d be this year, with three or four players selected,” he said. “Callum has worked hard and still has a lot of improvement in him. I think he’ll thrive in a full-time environment. “It was relief for Tom to get to Essendon . . . we were pretty sure he’d go there.” One Cannons player who missed out was Hisham Kerbatieh. “It’s disappointing for him,” Kyte said. “Now he needs to play in the VFL and improve in the areas that clubs see as his weaknesses.” Former Cannons player Andrew Gallucci was also picked up in the rookie draft. The Williamstown midfielder was selected by Carlton.

Double hat-trick lifts Macedon’s loss Macedon’s Eamon Cooper has joined a select group of cricketers after taking a double hat-trick on Tuesday night in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s T20 competition. During Macedon’s match against Lancefield, Cooper took four wickets in as many balls, something most bowlers only dream about. The 16-year-old took two wickets off the final two balls of his third over, and he then had to wait an over before he could go for his hat-trick. “The boys didn’t actually realise I was on a hat-trick,” Cooper told Star Weekly. “Once I got the third wicket, I told the boys that it was a hat-trick. “They quickly got around me and there was a few high fives.” A double hat-trick was the last thing on Cooper’s mind after achieving his first ever such feat.
It is a result that has only ever occurred once in international cricket, when Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga took four wickets in as many balls against South Africa in a one-day match. “I was not even thinking about four in a row; I was happy with a hat-trick,” Cooper said. “The ball went in the air and I thought ‘someone catch it’. Zac Watkins managed to catch it … I couldn’t believe what happened. “The batsman at the non-striker’s end then asked how many balls were left, and joked that I could bowl them out.” He finished his four overs with figures of 4-22 in Macedon’s loss. Cooper, in his first season in senior cricket, doesn’t consider himself as a T20 player as, being a leg spinner, players tend to go after him. He has taken six wickets in five games in the GDCA’s B-grade competition.

“It has been good and, hopefully, I keep going alright and get a few more games,” he said. “A couple of the senior players have tried to have a go at me and hit me around. “Hopefully, I can take a few more wickets this season.” Despite Macedon’s loss, the side qualified for the semi-finals of the district division competition where they will play Ashfield. Lancefield will play East Sunbury in the other semi-final. In the premier division, Riddell’s unbeaten start to the season continued as they defeated Sunbury. They will now play Romsey in the semi-finals. Bacchus Marsh and Sunbury United play each other in the other semi-final. Tara Murray

Dubai trip a thrill for Sunbury teen Riddell Cricket Club’s Mackenzie Casson is enjoying a trip of a lifetime as he and 11 other young Victorian indigenous cricketers take part in the KP24 Foundation’s inaugural 24/7 project. The project involves cricketers aged 15 to 18 enjoying the opportunity to train under former England international Kevin Pietersen, attend international matches, meet high-profile players and represent Australia in the project’s T20 world cup in Dubai. Over 10 days, teams from India, England, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, South Africa and Australia will meet at the Kevin Pietersen Cricket Academy for an intensive high-performance training program including skill development, coaching education, media training, nutrition and recovery. Casson, who arrived in Dubai last week with other group members, said the trip had been great so far. “We’ve had a good mix of cricket skills and also sightseeing,” he said from Dubai. “We saw the world’s largest building, the Burj Khalifa, which is 840 metres high. “The next few days will be exciting as we are going through a fitness challenge and we are off to watch England play Pakistan in a T20 tonight. Then we start our own T20-specific training under lights in Sharjah.” The Sunbury resident got involved in the program at his dad’s suggestion. “I went to a training session that dad had told me about and then I kept going back to more training sessions,” he said. “When the Dubai opportunity came up, I just wanted to be part of the program and get the opportunity to be involved.” The Salesian College student, who has been playing cricket for four years, said he hoped the improvement of his cricket would continue when he returned to Australia. “I would like to play premier cricket for Greenvale,” he said. Pietersen said through Cricket Victoria his academy was about giving something back to cricket. “Throughout my career I’ve been so fortunate to travel all around the world and meet so many amazing people, so it was always my ultimate ambition to put something on which gave something back to these places,” Pietersen said. “Wherever I’ve travelled, whether it be with England or playing franchise cricket, kids have always come to our training and joined in whenever they could. It’s forever been a regret of mine that our limited time in these areas meant I couldn’t repay them with the amount of time and attention they deserve. “The event will see boys leave their countries, most for the first time, and hopefully pick up the skills and confidence needed to improve their everyday life.” Tara Murray
MOTOR Latest VF ‘sounds’ just the job With the clock ticking down towards the end of local production, Holden has released the Series II version of its VF Commodore. Because the nameplate is set to continue as an import after the factory closes in 2017, Holden is aware of the importance of keeping Commodore up to date and so hasn’t ruled out another update some time in 2016. But it’s safe to say this will be the final major change to the car that has been such a feature of the Australian automotive industry for the past 37 years and one that was our nation’s top-selling car for 15 straight years between 1996 and 2010. With sales of the sportier Commodore variants (SV6, SS, SSV and SSV Redline) now approaching 60 per cent of total sales, it’s clear Holden is looking to say farewell to its iconic range in style. The biggest change with the Series II VF is the addition of the latest version of the Chevrolet LS3 6.2-litre V8 engine. With 304 kW and 570 Nm it has significantly more power and torque than the 6.0-litre (270 kW / 530 Nm) Gen 4 V8 in the Series I VF. Indeed it’s the most powerful non-HSV Commodore engine ever produced. It’s also the fastest Commodore sprinter yet, capable of going from standstill to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. Fuel consumption from the flagship SSV Redline is listed at 11.8 litres per 100 km on the combined cycle. While performance is paramount for owners of V8-powered cars, the sounds they emit run

a close second. With the characteristic gutteral growl steadily declining as modern engines become more refined it’s become necessary for engineers to intervene. To achieve the type of sound required, the Holden team has come up with the combination of a bi-modal exhaust system and a mechanical
sound enhancer. The bi-modal exhaust can be turned on and off through the touchscreen monitor. To ensure occupants of the car, and not just passers-by, get to enjoy the benefit of the enhanced sounds, Holden has developed a component called the “Baillie Tip”. Named
after the engineer who designed it, the late Dr David Baillie, it uses an aperture in the tailpipe to reverberate sound back through the exhaust and into the cabin. Exterior design changes are relatively minor and are functional rather than cosmetic, being there for improved aerodynamics and the additional cooling requirements of the more powerful engine. There are air vents on either side of the bonnet to assist the release of hot air from the engine bay and to give the car a more aggressive look. Other new features for VFII models from SV6 up include pushbutton engine start/stop; new design 18-inch alloy wheels (SV6 and SS); and LED taillights in the Sportwagon. The SSV adds a colour head-up display and 19-inch alloys and optional performance brakes, while the SSV Redline gets Brembo brakes and optional 20-inch forged wheels. The Calais has heated front seats, 18-inch alloys with the front passenger now joining the driver in having an eight-way powered seat including memory settings. With future Commodores likely to take the European route and be powered by four-cylinder turbo-petrols, and naturally aspirated and turbo-petrol V6s these V8 VF Series II should prove popular not only with driving enthusiasts but also with more conservative Holden lovers.
