Community leaders have urged the state government to finally decide whether Sunbury will split from Hume. Transition auditors John Watson and Frank Vincent were expected to present their report and recommendations to Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins yesterday. The pair were appointed by the Labor government in March with a brief to review the separation processes, after the former Liberal government gazetted formal notices that a new Sunbury council would start on July 1 this year. But the split was put on hold after Ms Hutchins said too many questions remained unanswered. A government spokeswoman said the transition auditors were on track to deliver their report by the August 31 deadline. ‘‘The government will consider the report and make it public later this year,’’ the minister said. Council chief executive Domenic Isola said the people of Hume had been waiting a long time and needed to know. ‘‘Now that the work has been completed, we urge the state government to make a decision on the issue so our community can plan for the future with more certainty,’’ he said. Hume’s Sunbury-based councillor, Ann Potter, agreed. ‘‘I understand they have to absorb the report, but the community, the council … we all need to know,’’ she said. ‘‘I would hope they would do it sooner rather than later.’’ Fellow Hume councillor and Sunbury resident Jack Medcraft said he was sick of delays. ‘‘This has been the greatest denial of natural democracy I’ve ever

seen,’’ he said. ‘‘No one knows what’s going on.’’ Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell said people had been kept waiting long enough. ‘‘Our expectation has always been that it would be released shortly after it was received,’’ he said. ‘‘The entire exercise is unnecessary. “All they’ve done is go over the reports, which the previous government was satisfied showed it [a stand alone Sunbury council] was viable.

Pull of home lifts house prices By Matt Crossman Property experts say the ‘‘come home’’ factor is one reason Gisborne has led regional Victoria in price growth for four-bedroom houses. Latest Real Estate Institute of Victoria figures reveal the median price for a four-bedroom house in Gisborne, in the year to June 30, increased 8.8 percent to $608,000, the highest in the state. Across Victoria, median prices for four-bedroom houses went up 4.9 per cent. Kyneton also made the top 10 most expensive

regional centres for the financial year, with a four-bedroom median of $407,600. Other towns performing well, but with less than 50 sales, were Woodend ($605,000) and Macedon ($590,000). Dunlop Real Estate director John Dunlop said lifestyle and price were also factors behind the trend. ‘‘Gisborne is still a very attractive area,’’ he said. ‘‘The prices are very affordable; there’s been a lot of increase in development.’’ Mr Dunlop said while many people were moving upmarket from other areas in the

Macedon Ranges, a growing number of buyers were returning to their roots. ‘‘A lot of the teenage kids who grew up here are now coming home, and getting a great house for $500,000 or $600,000.’’ Gisborne Real Estate director Janis Paul agreed. ‘‘We’re finding a lot of people were born and raised here, and want to come back and live in the area.’’ She said houses on the market priced close to $500,000 were selling quickly. ‘‘That’s the biggest turnover,’’ Ms Paul said.

‘‘You can still buy a property that’s quite nice for around $500,000, which you’d probably have to pay $650,000 for in outer areas of Melbourne. ‘‘Also Sunbury is running short of stock. Their properties are so cheap, they are turning them over literally overnight and a lot of people can’t get in.’’ Both Mr Dunlop and Ms Paul were hopeful of a strong local market this spring. ‘‘I’m very optimistic,’’ Ms Paul said. ‘‘There’s been a shortage of listings, but they are coming in now.’’

Speed limit bumped up on Calder

Calder Freeway motorists have had a major win with VicRoads increasing the speed limit on an outbound section of the freeway last Friday. The stretch of the Calder between the Melton Highway and south of Calder Park Drive was increased from 80km/h to 100km/h following a safety review by VicRoads and consultation with Brimbank council and Victoria Police. There has been a 10 per cent increase in speed camera infringements on the stretch between Kings and Organ Pipes roads in recent times, with 376 in the second half of 2014 climbing to 416 for the first half of 2015, according to Department of Justice data. The speed limit was reduced in 2004. Fourteen signs have been installed on the freeway to notify drivers of the new limit. Community groups have long campaigned for a return to the 100km/h speed limit. State MP for Sydenham Natalie Hutchins said the average crash rate on the freeway, between Overnewton and Holden roads, had decreased by about 65 per cent. “We’ve listened to local residents and this section of road has been carefully reviewed. Based on the evidence, the 100km/h speed limit will be restored,” she said. The Sunshine Avenue exit ramp has been extended to 180 metres recently, giving drivers more time to slow down as they leave the freeway.

Suspension bid for bad behaviour By Matt Crossman A Sunbury-based councillor has warned new standards that would let the state government stand down a councillor for up to six months to allow a panel to hear serious claims could further politicise councils. Cr Jack Medcraft, who was suspended for 28 days earlier this year following claims he tussled with a ratepayer over a sign and yelled at a number of people, said changes announced by Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins on Wednesday were ‘‘heading towards dictatorship’’.

‘‘If you have a council dominated by a political party, they can go and set up another councillor and have them rubbed out for six months for what turns out to be hearsay,’’ Cr Medcraft said. ‘‘It’s a very dangerous situation.’’ Cr Medcraft was stood down in April following a probe into claims he breached the code of conduct during a heated meeting about Sunbury’s separation from Hume. The Municipal Association of Victoria hearing, which followed an independent inquiry held earlier this year, followed complaints made after the Broadmeadows

Town Hall meeting last September. Cr Medcraft, who has described the two-person MAV panel as a ‘‘kangaroo court’’, said the government had to ensure councillors were given a fair hearing. ‘‘If they’re going to stand councillors down as a result of panels, are those panels going to be properly constituted?” he asked. ‘‘Are [witnesses] going to be under oath when evidence is given?’’ Under the proposed rules, councillors would be required to agree to codes of conduct before taking office. Councils will have to establish formal procedures to deal with allegations.

Ms Hutchins said the changes, to be introduced to State Parliament during the next month, would clarify expectations and ensure councils could quickly respond to misbehaviour. ‘‘The proposed bill will give councils and the government a broader range of powers to deal with councillors in breach of their codes of conduct,’’ she said. ‘‘I have consulted widely about the need to improve the current councillor conduct rules and I’ve heard loud and clear that we need a system that can respond quickly and appropriately.’’

Cheers as nature wins One of the Macedon Ranges’ most significant nature reserves will reopen eight months after a fire burnt close to 90 per cent of its bushland. Wildlife populations were also ravaged by January’s blaze at Kyneton’s Black Hill Reserve. But a major rehabilitation effort, involving the Friends of Black Hill Reserve, council staff, Landcare groups and prisoners, has given nature a helping hand. Friends president Daryl Kellet says trees and grass are resprouting and native animals returning to the reserve, which is also known for its giant granite rocks and boulders. About 80 nesting boxes destroyed by the fire are being replaced with the help of Kyneton Men’s Shed, while Loddon prisoners and young people from the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre have been involved in projects, including the replacement of picnic tables. ‘‘It’s been a real community effort,’’ Mr Kellet

says. ‘‘It’s going to take some time to get back to what it was, but it will get there.’’ There had not been a bushfire at the reserve for 70 years. Mayor Jennifer Anderson is encouraging people to attend a free celebration at the reserve on September 12. The event will include a welcome to country ceremony, a barbecue and guided tours. ‘‘We’re proud of what’s been achieved and looking forward to celebrating the wonder of this natural bushland on its reopening,’’ the mayor says. By Matt Crossman Macedon Ranges council has endorsed its submission to a state government review into the future of Hanging Rock, but not before two councillors slammed the way things have been handled. A motion to retrospectively endorse the document, submitted by the government’s revised July 31 deadline, was the subject of much debate last Wednesday, with Cr Russell Mowatt displeased about approving something that had already been sent. The government is reviewing management of the Rock, which the council has managed on behalf of the government for 130 years. The review was promised by Labor before last year’s state election after community outrage at a failed attempt to develop a resort and conference centre. Possible changes include giving control of the iconic site to Parks Victoria. The council’s submission defended its management record, citing the Rock’s recent state heritage register listing, the success of concerts in its east paddock, investigation of alternative funding and development of an environmental management plan. Urging the government to maintain the existing management structure, the council also called for ongoing maintenance funding, and money for a master plan and cultural assessment. It also made recommendations for a more efficient advisory committee structure. But Cr Jennifer Anderson described the submission as disappointing, firing off a list of

questions she felt had not been answered and questioning the make-up of the Hanging Rock Development Advisory Committee. ‘‘Why didn’t we include Landcare or more environmental experts on the committee?” she asked. “Why are the Hanging Rock finances not dealt with separately to those of council in general? ‘‘Why did we put forward a submission for funding through Regional Development Australia without consulting our community?’’ Cr Anderson wanted the submission to outline the council’s opinions about the strengths and weaknesses of management options and its reasons for past decisions. ‘‘If our community … is unhappy with how council is managing the Rock, we should embrace this and have open discussions about how to improve things.’’ Councillors Roger Jukes, Graham Hackett and John Letchford said the submission had been the subject of a long process to which all councillors had the chance to contribute. Cr Jukes said various committees had evolved over many years, but the current group played an important role. Hanging Rock Action Group spokesman Luke Spielvogel shared Cr Anderson’s concerns. ‘‘It’s clear there were a lot of inconsistencies in the submission,’’ he said. ‘‘What I worry is who’s setting the strategic direction in our shire – is it our elected representatives or is it the administration?’’ A listening post was set up in Woodend last week. The review is due to be completed this month, followed by a second investigation into planning provisions.

They will interview athletes, create videos and write articles about the excitement of the Games, which will attract thousands of participants across nine sports. won’t make the trip. The academy is a youth sports media organisation, with participants invited to form the official Games reporting team. The Salesian team’s extensive training included interviewing techniques, writing tips and video and photography pointers. Council lets sleeping dogs lie By Matt Crossman A Romsey greyhound trainer has been granted a 10-year permit to continue operating next door to land earmarked for the next stages of a major housing development. Macedon Ranges council last week went against an officer’s recommendation to refuse an application for a retrospective permit for the operation in Knox Road. The decision came after a representative of the developers of Lomandra Estate expressed fears about the loss of amenity for future residents. Ross Coster said some of the more than 200 houses to be built in the next four years would be inside the 500-metre buffer zone recommended by the Environment Protection Authority. ‘‘We don’t think the two uses go together,’’ he said. Before moving an alternative motion to grant a permit, subject to 16 conditions, Cr Graham Hackett put it to Mr Coster that dogs would not be banned from the new estate. The council officer’s report said the applicant had kept as many as 35 greyhounds on the property since 2009 without planning approval. It noted there had been no recorded complaints about the site, which includes two large, air-conditioned buildings, whelping kennels, a training track, three runs and fenced yards. Cr Hackett said many neighbours weren’t even aware a large number of dogs were being kept at the site. ‘‘This is an outstanding facility. Let’s let the applicant get on with her business.’’ Cr Jennifer Anderson said the proximity of approved housing was troubling and warned a future owner may not have such good management practices. But Cr Roger Jukes said the conditions, including a 10-year expiry date, would ensure the operation did not make life difficult for future residents. The alternative motion was passed by a vote of 5-2.

Padding up for a mighty effort Golden oldies wearing baggy greens are spreading the word about cricket for seniors. Sunbury-Macedon Ranges over-60 cricketers Rex Bennett and David Cordy recently toured the United Kingdom, representing Australia in a series against England. Teammates Bill Wigmore and Eane Whitton were part of two Victorian tour sides for players older than 60 and 70. Bennett, who captains the local club, said over-60s cricket was growing with baby boomers wanting to stay active and social at an age when their fathers had well and truly put away their whites. The Sunbury-based club, now in its seventh year, has about 20 players from around Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges. With teams in places such as Geelong, Albury, Ballarat and Benalla, players are preparing for a busy season. The competition, described by Bennett as ‘‘A-grade slowed down’’, caters for a mix of ages and abilities. Some players are well into their 70s and a few have reached 80 not out. A few barely played in their younger days but are relishing a second chance. ‘‘They’re effectively learning the game in their 60s and 70s, which I reckon is fantastic,’’ Bennett says. Briefs Two women have been charged in the most recent warrant executed as part of an ongoing police operation in Sunbury. Raids on four properties in Phillip Drive, Glastonbury Drive and Langport Crescent led to the arrest of a man in July and have now turned up 486 cannabis plants. The most recent warrant was executed at the Langport Crescent house about 9.30am last Wednesday when 219 cannabis plants were seized. Two women, of no fixed address, were arrested. Thi Viet Le, 20, and Tien Thuy Hoang, 25, were charged with cultivating a commercial quantity of a narcotic plant and will appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on November 19. The raid comes a fortnight after nine people were charged with drug offences after raids at Sunbury and Romsey.

Slamming the federal government for cost blowouts due to the delayed rollout of the National Broadband Network (NBN), Ms Chesters said central Victorians were being held back by inferior internet connections. The latest NBN rollout plan lists Gisborne, New Gisborne, Riddells Creek, Lancefield, Romsey, Sunbury and Diggers Rest as areas where work will begin early next year.

The pelvic ring is a strong and rigid structure that connects the spine to the lower limbs. It bears the weight of the upper body and transmits force down through the legs. It joins at the front at the pubic symphysis joint. From behind, the pelvis joins each side to the sacrum, which is at the tail end of the spine. These are called the sacroiliac joints.

During pregnancy, the changes in body shape places new and different demands on your body. Also, changes in hormones help to relax these pelvic joints to prepare to accommodate the delivery of the baby. One hormone called Relaxin, which peaks early in the second trimester, assists this. Some women have more pronounced effects than others from these changes. Pain may be felt through one or more of the pelvic joints. Sometimes it is a niggle, sometimes it can be very debilitating. Sometimes the deep muscles that help support good function at these joints can stop functioning properly, which further stresses the joint. Other muscles can tighten up in an effort to try and help out these joints, and they too can end up getting tired and sore. What we are left with is a poor functioning region, and a mother-to-be struggling to mobilise. Physiotherapists can assess the pelvic region to help determine the source of the pain, and make recommendations to help the condition. Hands-on therapy to help restore good mobility and muscle function, prescription of appropriate supportive devices if required, advice on activity modification, and muscle retraining are some of the things that a physiotherapist can do to improve function.

“TAKING STOCK” Selling the family home is always stressful and at this moment in time stress levels are particularly high so let’s take stock of the situation and look at reality. There are usually two main reasons that a property sits on the market. One is an agent who is unavailable, un-contactable, open for short hours, works part time or simply doesn’t care. The other and by far the strongest reason a property doesn’t sell is PRICE. We all want a high price for our home, we want the best price and we tend to think that our home is worth more than anyone else’s home. A property is worth what an intelligent, motivated buyer will pay for it, what a good agent can negotiate and what a bank values the property at. As a vendor, vendor should an of be received which is “unconditional” – that is, no offer bank finance – take the offer of and run! Bank finance is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain and with more and more people on contract work, casual or part-time the banks are being very careful. The price of a home may well reflect “want” rather than “need”. Look at the “why” - why are you selling? If there is no urgency then exercise patience, wait for the right buyer and the right price. If there is urgency because of employment changes or financial hardship then drop the price. Look at “need” instead of “want”. How much is “needed” to clear the mortgage, to reduce debt and reduce stress. In a booming market “want” is fine – prices go up and at times can be quiet unrealistic. This is not a boom time so price must reflect need and common sense. Be prepared to be patient and to listen to your agent. still allow for agile movement while taking a steady shot. For its size and cost, the camera is good value for money. And although it’s small and compact, it’s still able to produce quality footage. The still camera is also of decent quality. It’s no high-end 30 mega pixel digital camera, but it’s what you’d expect from such a small device. I’d compare the picture quality to that of a single frame of the video setting. A minor drawback is that the camera is quite awkwardly placed on the right-hand side of your head instead of in the middle above your eyes, which is where most competitors place theirs. (However having the camera on the right or left-hand side is usually better for snowboarders as they have their head turned most of the time). A serious drawback of this product is that it’s quite hard to find to buy. I stumbled across it at the super store Aldi where it was being sold in the technology cabinet. On looking for the product online, it doesn’t seem to be easily accessible – if at all. Overall, the device meets expectations and works very well for what it’s meant to do. It’s missing some key features, but the goggles are comfortable and do the job.

Action ski goggles released by Cocoon are an essential for snow sport enthusiasts. They have more good qualities than bad. They’re sturdy and have a high-quality feel. Among the features are that they film in full HD (1080p), only have two buttons, an adjustable strap and an inbuilt microphone. The controls of the goggles are what strike me the most – they’re easy to use, even with cumbersome ski gloves. The device allows you to easily connect to a computer to extract the video and image files. One downside is that there is no graphical user interface. To change the settings of the camera there’s a notepad file that you’ll need to open and edit. There’s limited supporting documentation and it isn’t user-friendly. However, this isn’t a big issue, as I found no need to change any of the advanced settings during my review. The overall comfort of the device is satisfying. The adjustable straps are soft yet do a good job of clinging to your head with limited movement. The lens is double-glazed to reduce glare and the goggles do a good job of venting and reducing screen fogging. The product doesn’t come with a micro SD card, which is understandable considering it’s about a quarter of the price of its leading competitor. The inbuilt microphone is of a high quality and doesn’t make too much unwanted noise. The sound quality that you’ll get from the device is really decent if not mildly better than the popular “Go Pro”. The goggles as a whole don’t weigh a lot and

SPORT One down, Sunbury ready for next battle One challenge overcome, now a new one awaits Sunbury Lions in the Ballarat Netball League. The Lions beat Redan in an elimination final on Sunday, to set up a semi-final clash with East Point on Saturday. The Lions took an early lead then resisted numerous Redan attempts to bridge the gap to win 45-38. Lions coach Adam Boldiston said a strong start was the key. “We made a good start, which we had emphasised during the week, to put on early scoreboard pressure,” he said. “We converted from the centre passes and were four goals up at quarter-time.” The quick start forced Redan to change things up to counter Sunbury’s star shooter, Chloe Curran.

“The first quarter set things up and made Redan make changes and bring on Erin Riley to match up on Chloe and give them a bit more height. “They had an injury time-out early in the second quarter and they changed up their centre. We still won the quarter by four goals and were up by eight at half-time.” Boldiston said he emphasised to his players they must not ease up in the second half. “They threw everything at us and pegged us back to four goals, but maintained composure, got some turnovers and got the hard-fought win,” he said. Boldiston said Curran was best on court, shooting 37 goals. “She is such a good player and has good strength,” he said.

“We were also fantastic defensively, with Elly Randall and Rebecca Anstey doing a great job to restrict them to 38 goals.” East Point enters the game on the back of a two-goal loss to North Ballarat City “We haven’t played them since really early in the season and we only played them once,” Boldiston said. “We were missing players out of the starting seven and apart from one quarter it was a close match. “We’ll be under the pump again but I believe if we play our best we can win.” Boldiston said they hoped to have Kate Fletcher back to add variety to the line-up. Kyneton is through to its first final series in the Bendigo Football League since 2003. The Tigers, needing a win to finish fifth on the ladder, led from the start to accomplish their 21.16 (142) - 12.5 (77) win over Maryborough. The Tigers outscored the Magpies in every quarter, Rhys Magin kicking five of their goals while Jake Hyland was best-on-ground. The Tigers play Eaglehawk in the elimination final this weekend. Gisborne finished its season well, defeating Kangaroo Flat, 18.12 (120) - 12.10 (82). Hamish Govan kicked three goals for the Bulldogs, while Josh Govan was best. The Bulldogs finish the season in sixth spot, two games behind the Tigers.

Bendigo NL

Gisborne enters the Bendigo Netball League finals on the right track after a convincing win over Kangaroo Flat. The teams went into the game knowing they will play each other in the first week of the finals. The Bulldogs got the upper hand, their 54-30 win giving them a fourth-placed finish, with Kangaroo Flat fifth. Kyneton finished its season after losing to Maryborough 45-39. The Tigers finished seventh on the ladder.

TAC Cup

Despite a loss to finish off the regular season, the Calder Cannons will play in the TAC Cup finals. On Saturday, they played the Western Jets, who had managed just one win for the year. The Cannons were left to rue a poor third quarter and bad kicking in the fourth quarter in wet conditions. The Jets kicked four goals to one in that third term to set up the 9.8 (62) - 6.17 (53) win. Karl Brown kicked two goals, while Hisham Kerbatieh was the best of the Cannons, who now play Geelong Falcons in an elimination final in the first week of finals.

Lions left to lick wounds By Tara Murray When it comes to finals, you have to play your best … that’s the lesson Sunbury Lions will have to swallow after their loss in the first week of Ballarat Football League finals. Going in as underdogs against Darley, the Lions were no match for the Devils, losing 12.12 (84) – 2.10 (22). Coach Rick Horwood could only bemoan his side’s poor disposal and not making the most of their control around the stoppages. “We had our chances, but our ball skills and ball retention were horrible,” Horwood said. “Kova [David Kovasevic] gave us first use of the ball and we won the clearances and stoppages. “But our disposal was putrid and we played into their hands.

“We had a record number of turnovers by foot. We were beaten by a better side.” Horwood said it was a case of boys versus men for much of the game. “We had seven guys playing in their first senior final. “Jake Edwards played at centre half-back for them and kept cutting us off going into the forward line. I kept saying not to kick to him, but they did.” The withdrawal of key forward Jack Sheahan before the game didn’t help the Lions’ cause, “He had a leg injury, which he didn’t come up from. It makes things different; it changes our structure and thinking but also shows what Darley could do,” Horwood said. “After an interrupted preseason and injuries through the year, it’s been a bit of a wasted year for him.”

Kovasevic was clearly the best player for the Lions, with Adam Short and Matthew Medcraft battling hard. Tanner Bell, in his first senior final, was among the better players. Jack Landt and Medcraft were the two goal scorers. Despite their first-round exit, Horwood said there was a lot for the Lions to take out of the season. The Lions also exited the finals in the first round last year, winning the same number of games in the past two years. “This was a massive development year, with seven guys playing in their first final on top of the guys who did last year,” Horwood said. “We have to learn from this. Our seconds had a good win and under-18s also made finals. “The future looks bright and the club is in good stead.”

Sunbury United’s fight for survival in FFV state league 1 north-west is over, after a 2-1 loss to Cairnlea. The loss means United will finish on the bottom of the ladder and be relegated. United is five points behind Corio and Westgate, with only one round remaining. In state league 5, Kyneton District defeated Gisborne 3-1.

Michael McCarten and Pam Drummond are winners of the Romsey Golf Club’s ‘medal of medalists’ for 2014-15. All men’s 2014-15 monthly medal winners teed off together in drizzle and a gusting wind on Saturday. McCarten won the stroke and putts competition, along with the medal, hitting 90/19/71 from Andrew Laing, 92/17/75. Drummond won the women’s competition on Wednesday, hitting 115/32/83.

Mud can’t spoil pristine record By Tara Murray The Sunbury Lions women’s football side grand final win in the Victorian Women’s Football League has capped off an undefeated season. The Lions have been the team to beat all year in west division with no side coming within 20 points of them until Sunday. A wet and muddy Coburg City Oval looked as though it could be a barrier to the Lions nailing the premiership. But they were more than up to the task, easing home against Melton Centrals 3.9 (27)1.2 (8). After scores were level at quarter-time, the Lions peppered the goals in the second quarter with little success, kicking 1.5. After half-time, the Lions kicked the only two goals of the half, not giving Centrals any chance to add to their tally. Lions player-coach Kerry Saunders said the side took a while to adjust to the conditions at Coburg. “They didn’t do us any favours,” she said. “We’re a quick team that likes to get the ball out of the packs and run. “The conditions meant it was contested … which favoured them. “We had to keep pushing the ball out of the ruck to the younger players and just keep getting them to run.” Saunders said that as with their first final, also against Centrals, the Lions started slowly and were a little unsettled in the first half.

“Whether it was nerves or we were just starting slow, I’m not sure,” Saunders said. The need for an experienced head saw Saunders put herself on to the ground. “I wanted the young girls to play first,” she said. “At 1.7 we needed a calming influence … it was more about talking to them and making sure they were in the right places.” Simone Craige was adjudged best on ground. Lions captain Natasha Hardy kicked two goals, while Stacey Smith kicked the other. Saunders said Hardy had been ultra-keen to return from a broken arm. “The minute she had her plaster off she was going to play,” she said. “She wanted to play in the middle, but I said ‘no’, resisted the urge and left her up forward. “Looking after her hand and arm was much more important.” The premiership success is a long way from where the side was at the start of the year, when it looked like folding. Saunders said Sunbury Lions acting president Hedley Dahau had commented at Sunday’s game that there had been only seven to eight players at this year’s jumper presentation. “The room was full today,” she said.

Finals hoodoo continues to haunt Rupertswood Rupertswood will go back to the drawing board after another failure in Riddell District Football League finals. The Sharks have played in finals each of the three years they have been in the competition but are yet to record a victory. This year, after finishing third on the ladder the Sharks were comprehensively beaten around the ground by Broadford in their elimination final. The Kangaroos won 8.3 (51) - 5.7 (37) – a scoreline that flattered the Sharks. Sharks coach Ben Jordan said it was some of the worst football he had seen by the team in his time as coach. “To be completely honest, we played really poor,” he said.

“We fumbled, double handled the ball and dropped easy marks. It was way below what we expected … it was disappointing that we played that way.” Jordan said he was happy with the first quarter even though his team failed to kick a goal. “We were happy we were in the contest at quarter-time after Broadford kicked with the wind in the first quarter,” he said. “The second quarter was the worst quarter of football I have seen. We were not able to take scoring opportunities and weren’t accountable.” Despite playing poorly, the Sharks were only trailing by 16 points at half-time.

“It was never going to be a high-scoring game,” Jordan said. “We gave ourselves the chance but we didn’t take it. Broadford pushed numbers around the ball and made it really hard. “After they got an a couple of early goals in the last quarter, the game was over. “We kicked the last two to three goals once the game was over. “It flattered us. A five or six-goal margin was more the difference between the sides.” Jordan said some of the younger guys were the ones who stepped up for the Sharks. “Dylan Podolczak handled the ball really clearly, Nathan Caldone in his second game for the year played well,” he said.

“Damon Cerini was another … it was a struggle to nominate the five best players.” Jordan said the loss was hard to take. “It’s hard to pick up the pieces the day after we have under-performed like that. “We have not won a final in the RDFL … for the club to move forward we need to make sure we are starting to win finals. “Whether that involves bringing in outsiders or recruiting experienced players, that’s something that has to be talked about. “I’m proud of the efforts throughout the year. We played well for 95 per cent of the season.” Tara Murray

Redbacks step up By Tara Murray Romsey is just one game off a second successive Riddell District Football League grand final after a hard-fought win against Macedon on Sunday. The Redbacks will face Diggers Rest for a shot at a grand final berth, although the loser will still get a second chance. On Sunday, the Redbacks defeated the Cats 12.3 (75) - 8.9 (57), jumping out of the blocks early to kick six goals in the opening term. With a lot at stake, the Cats came to life after the first break, and trailed by only seven points at half-time. They kicked the first three goals of the third quarter and had the game on their terms before the Redbacks kicked two to level scores at the final break.

The experience of the Redbacks shone through in the last quarter, when they kicked four goals to one to seal the win. For Redbacks coach Dean Helmers, it was a relief. “It was very tough … Macedon came to play. They’d done their homework on us and kept down a lot of our key players,” he said. “Results have opened the door up nicely for us and I think that’s why the game was so tough … I think Macedon realised that, too.” Helmers said he put it on his senior players to step up in the second half. “We got a little bit lazy at times in the game … I think the key was when we decided to slow the game down a bit, not rush it so much and get it more on our terms. “I really put it on some of the senior blokes to lead the way. We kicked the last two goals of the third quarter and seemed to be getting

our mojo back, but for some reason the quarter only went for 18 minutes.” In fact, a time-clock error cut the quarter to only 15 minutes with time on, instead of the normal 20 minutes with time on. The last quarter was then shortened to 15 minutes with time on, to even the game out. “I was disappointed,” Helmers said. “We had finally got our structure back and you’re fighting all day to get the right structure, and we had got it … and the siren went.” Helmers said Nathan Rayment, Matthew Burkett and Cam Wight were best in their win. Diggers Rest now awaits a face-off against the Redbacks this week. “Anything is possible in a second semi-final, and we have two shots at a grand final,” the coach said. “We know Diggers well … it will come down to who plays their game style.”

Diggers Rest moved a step closer to premiership redemption with a thrilling four-point win against Riddell in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. After racing to an early 22-point lead, the Burras were forced to fight hard to hold on to their advantage in the qualifying final. Riddell cut the margin to 11 points by three-quarter-time and to single figures as the minutes ticked down late in the match. In a seesawing contest, Diggers Rest came out on top with a 9.12 (66) - 9.8 (62) win and is now just two wins away from avenging last year’s grand final loss at the hands of Romsey. Diggers Rest coach Shaun Sims was rapt with the fight his players showed. “We were beaten in the inside 50s, beaten in clearances,” he said. “To still win the game is probably a credit to our backline. “[Riddell] were kicking with the breeze in the last quarter and we managed to hold on. Hopefully, the boys get a lot of belief out of that.” Stephen Ruane and Stuart Clarke were named among the best players for Diggers Rest. Up forward, Jason Williams and Jamie Lobb booted two goals each. For Riddell, Shaun Neeson kicked three majors and was well supported by Paul Sahlberg and Matthew Panuccio. While happy to come away with the win, Sims believes there is plenty of improvement to come from his side. “The month before this game, I think we were playing some of the best footy I’ve seen a Diggers Rest side play,” he said. “After the match, I think both sides would be pretty unhappy with the overall game. “We started it extremely well but after that I don’t think either team would be that happy with the way they were playing. “It was good enough to get the win, though, and that’s the most important thing.” Diggers Rest will play Romsey this week with the winner earning a place in the RDFL grand final. The Burras will have a few headaches at the selection table but for all the right reasons as Dean Smith and Brent Tuckey will be available for selection after recovering from injury. Bombers in sustained assault on finals Riddell issued a warning in the opening round of the Riddell District Netball League finals … it means business. Playing Rupertswood, a side it matched last time they played, the Bombers flew out of the blocks in the opening quarter, leading 17-3 at the first break. Despite all attempts by the Sharks, the Bombers proved too strong, outscoring them in every quarter to win 51-25. For Bombers’ coach Lauren Close, the start to the game was completely different to the last time the two met. “We’ve focused a lot the last few weeks on our game and making sure we did that going into this game,” Close said. “We practised our structures really well and knew what we had to do to beat Rupertswood after last time. “The conditions weren’t fantastic and we played to our strengths.” Close said despite the early lead the Bombers

knew they had to maintain the pressure and the same level of hard play. “We pretended at the start of each quarter that it was the start of the game and scores were level,” Close said. “Rupertswood is a team that will never back down and we knew at the third quarter that they’d come at us … and they did. The girls just followed through with what we’d been doing.” Madison Caulfield was best for the Bombers at wing attack, a position that she’s making her own. Caulfield is also the side’s third shooter. “Madi was definitely best on court,” Close said. “She has a calm, steady head but knows when to fire up when needed.” Mikaela Vaughan shot 27 goals from 46 attempts, while Christine Harris had her best game for the year, shooting 24 from 33. “With Christine back in as shooter, Madi is able to fire the passes into her and she

just shoots. We changed up Mikaela’s and Christine’s positions a few weeks ago, and it has worked really well,” Close said. “All the eyes are on Mikaela as she pushes up the court. It confuses people and they forget about Christine.” For the Sharks, Sidonie Moore shot 10 from 17 attempts as the other shooters struggled, while defender Kirsten Daley was named best on court. It was a nervous Close going into the game after missing the finals last year. She played the first three quarters in defence, before going to the bench in the final quarter. “I was a bit eager to get onto the court,” she said. “And we want to get back to where we were last year, a grand final.” The Bombers now play Macedon for a shot at that opportunity.

‘Cubs’ do it for Tigers By Tara Murray Youth and determination have carried Lancefield into the semi-finals of the Riddell District Netball League. The Tigers battled all day in Sunday’s elimination final against Romsey and for much of it were two or three goals down. But just when it looked as if the Redbacks would take the win, the Tigers made one late surge to get up 51-50. Tigers coach Alan Watson said he was proud of his young team. “It was fantastic,” he said after the match. “Romsey is really tough opposition and a very experienced side. “We’re very inexperienced but we have youth and determination and I think that is why we got over the line. “The girls didn’t panic and they used the ball well. “Some of the passages of play I saw today were brilliant.” Watson had his heart in his mouth when goal attack Courtney Annett went down injured after Lancefield had hit the front. Annett was best on court, shooting 23 goals. “I was a little bit worried when Courtney got a corkie and hit the deck,” Watson said. “I thought we may have been in a bit of trouble. “You’d have sworn she wasn’t injured the way she recovered but she’s pretty heavily iced up now.” With Lancefield in front, Watson urged his girls to keep their composure when the Redbacks called an injury time-out late in the game. “I told them Romsey were calling a time-out for one reason, panic,” he said. “All of a sudden we put the screws on them and we are two and a half minutes from the finish with noses in front.” Watson said all eight girls who stepped on the court contributed. “We had a young girl [Elke Smith] who sacrificed a game in B-grade on Saturday to play with us,” he said. “She has been a brilliant club person and I promised her she would play a half. “It’s a great introduction to her to playing finals in the highest level in the competition. “She deserved her opportunity and I think she played well and it gave Gemma Jackson a bit of a spell. “Gemma’s height and strength was telling at the end, when she came back on in the last quarter.” In Sunday’s semi-finals, the Tigers will face Rupertswood, whose coach was a keen onlooker last weekend. “Rupo is going to be a tough ask,” Watson said. “We’ll just play our own game.” Macedon will meet Riddell in the other semi-final on Saturday .

Cats scratch premiers from the finals Macedon knocked reigning premiers Melton Centrals out of the Riddell District Netball League finals in the first round on Sunday. The Cats, who finished third on the ladder, were too good for sixth-placed Centrals in what was an even elimination final for most of the day. But the Cats did the damage in the third quarter, outscoring Centrals 8-3 in rain and wind to win 34-26 at Rockbank’s Ian Cowie Reserve. Bec Colwell shot 32 from 36 attempts for the Cats. Cats coaches Karri Ambler and Kelly Nicholas said bringing on Genaya Burke into goal attack proved to be the key move of the day. “We switched her to goal attack and her feeding to Bec Colwell was brilliant,” they said. “The defence of Kymberley Grant and Kate McLeod worked well. Kate played as keeper all day as the Centrals had a really tall shooter.” The conditions meant both sides had to adjust their playing styles. “We had to take it slowly as you couldn’t get a run-on down the court,” the coaches said. “It was really slow movement which seemed to work for us despite normally playing with a bit more pace. “Some of the shots would look like they were on line before the wind would take them in a different direction.” The coaches said Tarryn Mackie would return to the side to face Riddell in this weekend’s semi-final. Mackie was named on the team sheet on Saturday but hasn’t played since hurting her knee in round 11. The winner of the match will go through to the grand final, while the loser will play in the preliminary final on the following weekend. Ambler and Nicholas said it was hard to judge how their side would match up against the Bombers as neither was coaching when the two sides met in the home-and-away season and both had had personnel changes. “They’re different sides to last time,” they said. “We need to shoot goals against their formidable defence. “The feed into our shooters is the key for us. “It’s hard to get through [Riddell’s] Danni Davidson and Lauren Close.” Tara Murray
