Toilet training revived By Matt Crossman Only ones and twos down the loo – that’s the message from Western Water, as new figures show blockages caused by fats and oils, wet wipes and even nappies are costing up to $150,000 a year to clear. ‘‘That’s just across the sewer plants,’’ customer and community relations general manager Graham Holt said. ‘‘In residential areas, that cost increases depending on the time of day for the blockage and extent of damage done to assets and the environment. ‘‘It’s an unnecessary cost but, sadly, it is passed onto all customers.’’ Mr Holt said the incorrect disposal of items that don’t break down like toilet paper could block sewers, pumping stations and filter screen systems at recycling treatment plants. About 450 sewer blockages have been recorded in Western Water’s service area in the past year. ‘‘Typically, items gather at the sewer pumping stations, get caught in the pumps and cause failures,’’ Mr Holt said. ‘‘In some towns, they get caught up closer to homes, causing blockages.’’ Western Water data shows staff remove close to 1500 kilograms of waste from the Sunbury recycled water treatment plant every week. This waste then has to be sent to landfill. Dolls, toy guns and even phones are among items pulled out by workers in recent times. Residential areas of Sunbury and Melton are known trouble spots for fats and oils being flushed down the drain, while adult nappies and wet wipes are the main cause of blockages in other areas. Wet wipes, traditionally used for cleaning babies, have increased in popularity in recent times and are often marketed as a flushable replacement for toilet paper. Mr Holt urged people to think before putting waste down toilets or drains. ‘‘Our message is, just because packaging says they can be flushed doesn’t mean they should be.’’ For video footage showing problems caused by wet wipes at a pumping station, visit www. starweekly.com.au. Joe, the hugging roo, on the mend after shooting A friendly kangaroo who provided years of companionship for a now deceased Macedon resident is recovering after being shot in the shoulder. Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network says the incident early this month was another example of increasing cruelty towards native animals. ‘Joe’, who has lived on a Macedon property for about six years, survived the ordeal but will need significant veterinary treatment to ensure he makes a full recovery. His shooting comes two months after a wombat was illegally shot and killed in Pastoria,

leaving a baby orphaned. An ibis was recently shot with an arrow near Woodend. Network spokeswoman Fiona Corke said native wildlife was protected by law, and she called on the state government to do more. ‘‘It can’t be left up to groups like ours; we are under enough pressure as it is,’’ she said. Network volunteer Sue Anderson said Joe had grown up being hand-fed by a Macedon resident around whom the kangaroo used to wrap his arms. ‘‘He’s so gentle,” she said. “It’s quite disturbing that someone would do this.’’

Ms Corke acknowledged Joe could have been shot under the Environment Department’s direct control measures. ‘‘This is just an example of the kind of thing that can happen with the permits,’’ she said. ‘‘People don’t even have to prove they are a good shot.’’

Ms Corke said wildlife volunteers had found kangaroos with their jaws hanging off and shoulders torn apart by shotgun pellets. Landholders can apply for a permit to use direct control techniques, such as dispersal or culling, if wildlife is damaging crops and buildings or threatening human safety. Last month, Star Weekly reported that 79 permits to get rid of 2180 kangaroos were granted in the Macedon Ranges in the past year. Matt Crossman

A growing Sunbury BMX club is in a race against time after thieves raided a shipping container loaded with bikes and helmets for children wanting to try the sport. Eight bikes valued at $500 each and helmets valued at $120 were among items taken from Sunbury BMX Club’s track at Sunbury Recreation Reserve. A compressor was also stolen. Club secretary Carolyn Todd said the break-in in late June had put volunteers in a tight spot, with the club preparing to host up to 400 riders for a major meeting on August 23.

‘‘We’re putting a call out for sponsors and anyone who can give the club a hand,’’ Ms Todd said. ‘‘The club’s grown a lot in the past few years. Because of that, we bought the bikes and gear so new kids coming along could have a go without the initial expense. ‘‘The club’s a great place to be at the moment, but to have this theft happen is very disappointing.’’ The club recently became the second-largest in the state, going from 48 riding members in 2013 to 177 this year. Ms Todd said the August 23 meeting would attract close to 1000 people, but the theft had placed pressure on resources.

Football took a back seat on Saturday as the Sunbury Lions and the football community remembered MH17 airline victims Maree and Albert Rizk. A large crowd was at Clarke Oval as the Lions and their opponent Redan paid tribute to Maree and Albert. It was a full house for a pre-game function before players and spectators joined together for a minute’s silence. The couple’s son James Rizk led the Lions onto the field before taking his place on the team’s backline. Vanessa Rizk, the daughter of Maree and Albert, was involved in the pre-game ceremony, releasing two balloons in memory of her parents. Once on the field, the Lions were brave but couldn’t hold off Redan, losing by four points. Coach Rick Horwood said it was an emotional day with players and supporters in tears before the game and in the rooms afterwards. “I think it hurts more as we had the game in our hands and we lost it. I don’t think Redan won it; we lost it, so it hurts a bit more. But I was pretty proud of them. They wanted to win so badly today.” James Rizk was adjudged the Lions’ best player. “It was an unknown [how he would play],” Horwood said. “I had a feeling he would be mentally strong. The calls came after the previous public meeting on the controversial subject led to fiery disputes between members of the public and a probe into the alleged misbehaviour of Sunbury-based councillors Jack Medcraft and Jack Ogilvie. The pair, who fronted two investigations, complained they were “ambushed” by agitators waving placards at last September’s meeting at Broadmeadows Town Hall. Earlier this month, Cr Medcraft said a strong security presence was needed to prevent a repeat of what happened last year. “I hope it doesn’t turn into an event where people are targeted because their views are different from that of others,’’ he said. Friday’s meeting, at which the auditors will present an overview and answer questions, will be led by an independent facilitator. The meeting will at Sunbury Memorial Hall from 7pm. Canvas preferred to skin A Sunbury artist who considered a career in the tattoo trade before finding his niche in graphic design is in the running for a $30,000 Indigenous art prize. John Patten, who started to shift from commercial art towards galleries last year, has been shortlisted for the Victorian Indigenous Art Awards at his first attempt. As an artist, Patten is a veritable jack of all trades. On any given evening, after finishing a day teaching Aboriginal art and culture at a Melbourne arts centre, he can be found working on anything from woodcarvings and metal work through to writing plays. ‘‘I do a lot of writing, painting, drawing, sculpture,’’ he says. ‘‘If there’s a material there, I’m keen to give it a go.’’ Patten moved to Sunbury about seven years ago after growing up in New South Wales.

His shortlisted work, Jugun II II, represents his upbringing and the opportunities open to his children in his new home. The large black and white canvas is the second in a series of works telling his personal story. ‘‘It’s all very different to what most people associate as Aboriginal art,” he says. “There’s no dots or anything like that.’’ Patten says the works in the annual awards, which will be exhibited in Ballarat from August9, reflect the diversity of Indigenous culture. ‘‘Just in Victoria, you’ve got over 40 different language groups,” he says. ‘‘It’s like if you go to Europe, you’ve got all these different countries. On the surface, the people might look similar, but they’ve got … different language groups and religions.’’

Transition auditors reviewing Sunbury’s planned separation from Hume say they’ve welcomed the opportunity to hear different points of view in the lead-up to a public meeting. John Watson and Frank Vincent have sat down with residents and community groups in recent weeks after offering face-to-face meetings as part of the consultation phase of the review process. The meetings follow the release of information sheets outlining details of the 2013 poll that led to Sunbury’s secession and the potential impact on rates in Sunbury and Hume, service delivery and population growth. Mr Watson, the Brimbank council chairman of administrators, and Mr Vincent, a former judge of the Supreme Court, were appointed by the state government in March with a brief to review the Sunbury split. The former Liberal government had gazetted papers for the creation of a new Sunbury council to start on July 1 this year. In a statement, Mr Watson and Mr Vincent encouraged Sunbury and Hume residents to again share their views at this Friday’s meeting at Sunbury Memorial Hall. The auditors have promised to report back to the government before August 31. ‘‘This is an issue that will affect the local community now and well into the future, and we encourage everyone with an interest in the separation of Sunbury to also make a formal submission before July 29,’’ they said.

‘‘Your submissions addressing questions arising from our community information and engagement program are fundamental to our report and recommendations.’’ Mr Watson and Mr Vincent have downplayed calls to ensure security guards are present at the public meeting.

Strategy call on family violence Community health centres are ideally placed to play an increased role in responding to family violence, according to Sunbury Community Health’s submission to a royal commission. But the 40-page document warns that the whole response system must be adequately funded if the devastating consequences of the problem are to be curbed. The submission was one of almost 1000 made to the royal commission launched in response to rising family violence rates. Public hearings began last week, with the commission to report and make recommendations to the state government by February. SCH’s submission said references to family violence as an emergency becoming widespread meant little without adequate resources. ‘‘A national emergency requires a strategic plan which recognises the need to … adequately fund all stages of the response system until prevention, early intervention, accountability and healing measures start taking effect,’’ the submission says. ‘‘Community health centres work directly with thousands of local families and have strong relationships with schools, businesses and other community agencies. They are best placed to lead prevention activities.’’ The submission calls for funding to allow SCH to recruit a small team of family violence workers to implement locally relevant education and intervention programs. ‘‘The system must be localised and

strengthened to ensure early intervention responses are timely and effective. ‘‘SCH and other community health centres can respond to low-risk incidents that may not be actioned by regionally provided services. ‘‘They also have personal relationships with local police, capacity to contact victims and perpetrators in the 24 to 48 hours after an incident and can immediately provide wrap-around supports for the whole family.’’ The submission also calls for behavioural change programs to be expanded, with demand greatly exceeding availability.

With almost 60 incidents reported in Hume every week, SCH child, youth and family services general manager Marcus Bosch told Star Weekly it was crucial that the community supported women and children experiencing family violence. ‘‘It’s also important for clear messages to be given to men who behave violently,” he said. “Information can be given to them about services to help them address these issues, also through Sunbury Community Health. ‘‘We seek to engage the community in working towards building a culture where men are respectful of women and where there is strong value placed on gender equality from an early age.’’

NBN slow to roll

More areas of Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges will be covered by the high-speed National Broadband Network (NBN), but not until at least late 2016. An updated rollout plan released last week listed Gisborne, New Gisborne, Riddells Creek, Lancefield, Romsey, Sunbury and Diggers Rest among areas where construction will begin in the first half of next year. McEwen MP Rob Mitchell said residents had waited too long for the NBN, which the federal government promised would be completed by next year.

Tree Day by the riverside Invasive willow trees rotting along a Kyneton river bank will be covered up by native plants as part of a National Tree Day event this Sunday. Volunteers are being invited to join members of the Campaspe River and Land Management Group as they plant indigenous flora and eucalypts from 10am until midday. Kyneton District Health (KDH) will share a $580,000 federal government boost to central Victorian home and community care programs (HACC). Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters said the money would support older people, residents with disabilities and their carers, allowing them to live independently for longer. KDH will receive a one-off payment of $14,000. HACC programs are jointly funded by state and federal governments.

By Matt Crossman Rod Sinclair says he was 14 when he officially became a member of the CFA. ‘‘Officially’’ because, like many youngsters at the time, he had been turning out for fires with his father since he was eight or nine years old. After more than 50 years as a volunteer, including significant stints as brigade captain and instructor, the Riddells Creek veteran has been presented with CFA life membership and a national medal. ‘‘It’s not done these days, but back then every kid was involved from a young age like that,’’ he said. Mr Sinclair, who remains heavily involved as a vehicle trainer and firefighters’ association leader, said an emphasis on skills-based training was among the major changes to come in during his career. ‘‘We used to just do a massive amount of burning off, because that was the only way to do it,’’ he said. ‘‘Nowadays, with all the training centres, we are a lot better prepared.’’ He said protective equipment, too, had come a long way. ‘‘Firefighting is a lot safer than it used to be.’’ Not surprisingly, the Ash Wednesday bushfires of 1983 that devastated the Macedon Ranges are etched in Mr Sinclair’s memory. But the trouble caused by the first batch of diesel trains is something not remembered by many others. ‘‘In the early days, those diesels used to light fires all along the train line,’’ he said. ‘‘We attended something like 120 fires a year [caused by trains] in the early ’70s.’’ One thing that hasn’t changed is the central

part played by the brigade in the town life of Riddells Creek. ‘‘I’m very proud of our brigade,’’ Mr Sinclair said. ‘‘We’re still very strong on the community side with lots of volunteers, and that’s good for the town.

“That kind of mindset flows into every area. I remember when the football club was doing a major upgrade and they were without a siren for a time, so we’d go down with the fire truck and ring the siren at the end of the quarter. “That’s what it’s all about, really,’’ he said.

It’s been a long haul, but a group behind the push for a skate and BMX park at Lancefield is confident the next generation of youngsters won’t have to leave town to practise kickflips and ollies. Skate park committee member Amy Bell said a 20-year campaign was reaching its business end. Macedon Ranges council has approved designs for the south-eastern corner of Lancefield Park and allocated $130,000 to the build. The committee needs sponsorship and grants to help cover the remaining $170,000 needed for the community’s preferred plan. Fundraising efforts will be launched in coming months. ‘‘It’s just dollars now,’’ Ms Bell said. ‘‘The fact the council has pledged $130,000 is such an encouragement for other groups to come forward. ‘‘The site’s been approved, money’s been pledged and we’ve got an active and engaged community.’’ The push for a skate park dates back to the late 1990s, when the town raised $12,000, which remains in the group’s coffers. Considerable effort was put in over the years that followed, but the lack of a formal design stopped the project from becoming a reality. A 32-seat arthouse theatre designed to evoke memories of the grand old cinemas of the 1940s is due to open at New Gisborne’s Baringo complex in September. Site owner Gary Harley, who with wife Pauline has owned the former Whistlestop Hotel and surrounding land since 1998, said construction of the theatre was progressing well and would add to broader renovations including a bar, bistro and wine store. The theatre, which will feature plush leather chairs and ‘‘lots of crimson and gold’’, will also be used for functions, lectures and recitals. Mr Harley said it was an exciting part of a $50 million vision for a community ‘‘centrepoint’’ offering entertainment, food, wine and accommodation. ‘‘We’re just trying to build on that whole village theme,’’ he said. ‘‘New Gisborne is a beautiful village that hasn’t really had any sort of commercial hub until now. ‘‘This is meant to create a true centre for the community.’’ Mr Harley said the theatre was modelled on the success of other venues, such as The Sun at Yarraville. ‘‘There will be movies on every day,’’ he said. ‘‘We haven’t set the program yet, but it will be very nostalgic; it will be classic and European. ‘‘Our whole project is really about bringing that inner city, urban edge feel into a rural, regional area.’’ Mr Harley said the development, which has already created 20 new jobs, had been a phenomenal success. ‘‘I think our workforce will grow to something like 40,’’ he said, citing other plans for cottage accommodation and a 66-lot residential development behind the hotel site.

A mixed media artist who spent time in residence at Riversdale, home of Arthur Boyd’s Bundanon Trust, is among many creators featured in a guide to the Macedon Ranges’ art scene. Lorna Thrift Brooks and Lara Le Reveur (pictured) are among almost 30 artists featured in the latest Macedon Ranges Art Trail brochure, available from tourist information centres, libraries, cafes, wineries and online. Now in its third year, the guide also lists open galleries, artisan businesses and events. The 2015-16 edition includes Sunbury artists for the first time. Community consultation undertaken as part of a review of the management at Hanging Rock was “encouraging”, Hanging Rock Action Group president Luke Spielvogel said last week. The action group has long sought better protection for the major tourist attraction. Its members were among about 50 people at Woodend last Wednesday who were told that possible changes included reforming the Rock’s advisory committee or giving control of the iconic site to Parks Victoria. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, the state government appointed consultants to consider options for new management of Hanging Rock Reserve. The comprehensive review, which will include a second stage focused on planning controls, fulfils an Andrews’ government pre-election promise. ‘‘We’re … encouraged by the process itself and some of the themes that were discussed,’’ Mr Spielvogel said. “There was real balance and perspective.’’ He said many felt too much focus had been put on recreation at the Rock, ‘‘perhaps at the expense of environment and heritage values’’. As it is, residents have until Friday to comment on concept plans for two new picnic shelters at the Rock. E3D Pty Ltd is a social enterprise with a focus on helping people create the world they wish existed, to aim to build a more positive world and to leave a positive legacy. Bringing together young people under the age of 25 with people over the age of 50, SE3D offers two separate programs empowering participants to set goals and pursue ambitions, both individually and collectively. Director and creator Paul Kooperman believes life is all about nurturing one’s inner seed, thus the name. “The outcome is that participants will plant their seed, which can then be watered, nurtured, shared, contributed to, and represent some kind of positive legacy for the world, because legacy starts with a leg, a foot, a step in the right direction,” Paul said. Programs are delivered via workshops, seminars, retreats and personal and professional development sessions, as well as at weekly peer-led meetings. The first SE3D weekend workshop for older people, someday, someday will be held on the weekend of October 23–25 at the Farmers Arms Hotel, Lancefield. It will be presented by the young leaders of The Field Trip, an associated youth program that starts on August 2 at Lancefield. The Field Trip is SE3D’s youth leadership arm, giving younger generations the chance to act as leaders and empower themselves, and others, to become thinkers, innovators and entrepreneurs. October’s weekend someday retreat will focus on the individual stories and dreams of participants.

Triple Jump is one of those games that makes the user feel like they are playing one of the easiest games on the app store. What Ketchapp has managed to publish is a game fraught with frustration and addiction. Triple Jump is a game where the user is a ball on a constantly moving plain. The user is required to tap the screen in order to jump over spikes. Each jump adds one to your overall score. Coins are randomly generated during the course of the game which the user collects and spends on various “skins” (for 50 coins) to change the character’s appearance. Triple Jump mimics Dong Nguyen’s “Flappy bird” where the user can play instantly with no learning curve and feel like they can beat their incredibly low scoring first try. One drawback is that upon opening the app for the first time, you are bombarded with ads. While trying Triple Jump, I found myself getting frustrated at how many times it looked like the ball went over a spike yet it registered as a failed attempt. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this app. It feels clunky and the ads are overbearing.

Try Harder is a 2d game published by “[adult swim]” where the user is a character that jumps over certain obstacles while constantly on the run. The objective is to run as far as possible before dying. There are certain methods the user has to perform in order to advance to further stages of the game. Different methods include single jumping, double jumping, collecting a certain power-up or holding your finger down to use a glider which would safely sail you down a cliff and over a pool of lava. The game draws on an adventurous art and Mario-esque platformer gameplay style. It’s fast-paced and very fluid. The game sounds are quality and are in line with the overall feel of the game. Overall, I rate Try Harder highly and definitely recommend checking out.

Threes! Free is an addictive puzzle game published by “Sirvo LLC”. The game has very similar mechanics to the widely popular “2048” published by Ketchapp. The game involves you sliding tiles and adding them together to make the biggest number possible to obtain the greatest score. For example, sliding the six tile into another six will produce a 12 tile. You can only add tiles together that have the same value. The game works really well and doesn’t require you to drop a cent to enjoy it. However, the app is structured in a way that you only have a certain amount of tries before you must watch an ad for no more than 30 seconds or alternatively you can buy the game and have unlimited tries. Overall, this is a must-have for puzzle lovers or for someone who just likes to kill some time while enjoying a well-made app.

“Prodigy Design Limited” has managed to publish an intense, fast-paced and blood-pumping action zombie survival game that will put you on the edge of your seat. Basically, you play as a character who has survived a helicopter crash and the aim of the game is to run as far as you can through a field of zombies without getting eaten. The game is based on a freemium model which works well considering most of the purchasable items are purely “cosmetic” and aren’t necessary to advance further in the game. You can choose to have an animal companion which is a perk bought with virtual currency that you get from each run. The further distance you travel per run, the more virtual currency you obtain. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend Into the Dead for children under 15 but would highly recommend it to anyone who loves the zombie genre.

SPORT Lions ready to roar into finals contention Disjointed is the word the Sunbury Lions use to describe their first 12 rounds of the Ballarat Netball League season. A combination of new players, Victorian Netball League commitments and two players having babies has meant the Lions haven’t had a full squad to choose from this season. Despite this, the team is sitting fourth on the ladder, 8-4. Defender Rebecca Anstey said considering the interrupted start, it was all positive so far. Anstey, who’s own late start was due to having a baby, was one of three players who remained from last year’s team, which finished runners-up. “There is a really good feel around the club,” Anstey said. “We have a lot of young girls coming into the team and each of the younger girls have been good in their own right. We have three strong

shooters, three strong defenders and strength in the midcourt, we have a lot of depth.” She said that depth had proved to be the side’s strength as they prepare to make finals again. “It’s a little trial and error to find the strongest line-up. The way we might line up may be different from one week to another.” First-year coach Adam Boldiston said it was good to have players such as Anstey and Prue Stanley in the side. “Beck has done well to get back on court so soon after a C-section and is starting to get her footwork back. “Prue was a different situation with a surrogate from America [having her baby] so she missed five to six weeks. “Their presence and leadership on the court is something we miss when they aren’t there. “As I haven’t coached against all of these

sides before, I go to them to ask what they can tell me about them.” He said he hoped to have a full team within the next month. “We are starting to see a more settled line-up. We’ll be able to have a few more training sessions together to work on things.” Boldiston said he was excited with what he has seen so far “While the majority of the side is VNL players they are very young. Cats’ belief topped up By Tara Murray Macedon was able to do something it hadn’t all year in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. The Cats had struggled to play the full four quarters in games against sides in the top six and suffered four close losses as a consequence. On Saturday, against the Sunbury Kangaroos, that changed as the Cats made the better of a mud heap to record a 4.8 (32)–1.7 (13) win. For coach Jeff Andrews, it was a relief to get a win against one of the top sides. He said getting back on the winners’ list against Woodend-Hesket the week before had been a big confidence booster. “It’s a step in the right direction,” Andrews said. “It was in the back of my mind [losing to the top sides] and I didn’t want it to happen again. “You could tell after the game that the players are starting to believe they can match it with the top sides.” Andrews said his side dominated the low-scoring affair. “It was horrendous conditions with the ground just mud after it rained all day Friday,” he said. “Scoring was always going to be hard to come by, but our backline still did an amazing job. “In hindsight, we were in control of the game but in a low-scoring affair they only needed to kick a couple of goals and everything would have changed.” Shaun Harrison was best on ground for the Cats with Andrews saying he did a brilliant job in conditions that “aren’t his forte”. The Bombers are quickly becoming premiership favourites, having knocked off four of the top six sides in the past month. Thunder laps up better days East Sunbury’s progress continues by the week in Essendon District Football League division 2. Having already won more matches than the two previous years’ combined, the Thunder added another first to this year’s achievements at the weekend. Playing Keilor Park, the Thunder recorded its first victory against a side other than Burnside Heights and was the better side from early in the game. But it had to survive a last-quarter comeback for its 11.10 (76) –10.9 (69) win. Thunder coach Steve Grey didn’t know whether his side had what it took to hold off the last-quarter comeback. “We led all day before they hit the front halfway through the last,” Grey said. “I really didn’t think we had it in us to respond. “They were running across the ground and had the momentum of the game.” Losing the lead seemed to be what the Thunder needed to switch back on. “From then, we controlled the game,” Grey said. “Ash Fleming, Kamen Ogilvie and Jason King showed their experience and won the footy at the right times. “Ash kicked the goal to put us back in front. We kept the composure, and showed the belief that we can win these games, that we can win when the chips are down.” Grey said King, Ayden Smith and Matt Reiffel had come to the fore in the past month. “In that time, they’ve really come a long way. This group has come on leaps and bounds,” Grey said. “The attitude, discipline … and they have been working well together.’ The win cements the Thunder’s sixth spot on the ladder. Grey isn’t content to settle with three wins for the season. “With four weeks to go, there are a couple of sides we think we can beat. “I’d like to get two wins from the final four rounds and upset some teams,” he said. “This win gives us confidence for not only the rest of the year but next year. “At the start of this year, I said we wanted to win four to six games and if we can get a couple more wins we will take that,” he said. “We’ve done better than a lot of people expected.”

Redbacks rise to Riddell By Tara Murray

Football isn’t just for the young … and a group of ‘masters’ from Woodend wants to take to the field to prove it. More than 30 men aged 35-plus have already expressed interest in joining the newly formed Woodend Masters Football team. Daron Jacks said the club, backed by Woodend-Hesket Football Club, would have a scratch match on August 23 against Maryborough. “The league [Victorian Country Masters Football League] wants to make sure we have enough numbers to field a side,” Jacks said. “At the moment we have about 30 men, but we need around 40 for the team, due to time commitments and availability. “There are different faces each week at training. We’re finding some wives are sending their husbands down. “We are encouraging people to come down to training and see if they enjoy it. “We’re after trainers and people to help off-field as well.” Jacks said the club wanted to play five to six games next year. “We can pick and choose the number of games we play,” he said. “We’d rather nominate to play five to six than bite off more than we can chew.” Gisborne and Sunbury already have Masters teams. Romsey made sure no one will forget this side come finals time, after a nail-biting draw with ladder-leaders Riddell. Riddell entered the Riddell District Netball League game having won all its matches this season, while the Redbacks have been towards the bottom half of the top six. In a shock, the Redbacks managed to match the Bombers, with final scores 48-48. It was a game which neither side could control, with the Bombers leading by two at quarter-time, and then the Redbacks ahead by one goal at half-time. Scores were level, 40-40, entering the final quarter. The two sides went goal for goal in a low-scoring final quarter, with both sides applying plenty of pressure. Defenders Jena Baboth and Stephanie Barnes were among the best for the Redbacks, with Hope Hamilton scoring 38 goals. For the Bombers, goal shooter Mikaela Vaughan was best, with 31 goals. In other results, Lancefield defeated Wallan, 44-26, to put a dint in the Magpies’ finals hopes. It was one-sided results in other games. After an interrupted couple of weeks, Macedon returned to the winners’ list with a 75-17 win over Sunbury Kangaroos. Rebecca Colwell scored 62 goals for the Cats. Rupertswood was too good for Rockbank, winning 69-19. Defenders Kirsten Daley and Tess Abbott were best on court for the Sharks, while Amy Starzer (37 goals) and Lucy Batina (32 goals) shared the goals around. In the other game, Diggers Rest helped keep its finals hopes alive, with a 66-29 win over Kilmore.

Meacham told Star Weekly he made the decision five weeks ago, with the need to have shoulder surgery being a major reason. Meacham said surgery, which he will have after season’s end, would have meant missing a lot of next year’s pre-season had he decided to continue in the job. Last year, he stood down for the second half of the season after a farming accident meant he needed knee and shoulder surgery. “I need to have another shoulder reconstruction,” he said. “People look at me and think I’m OK, but I need more surgery for pain management.

“I’m going to need to have a shoulder replacement in years to come.” Meacham said it would also be good for the club to have a different voice. “Last season I stood down because of the accident. This time it’s not just because of surgery,” he said. “I’ve been here six years and it’s time the boys had a different voice telling them what to do. “Having a year off will benefit me and it will benefit the club. “I’m leaving them in a good position with a good list.” For now, chasing another premiership is the aim for Meacham and the Kangaroos. Meacham was co-coach of the club’s 2012 premiership side when he kicked the winning goal.

The Kangaroos are sixth on the ladder after losing their past three matches. On Saturday, they lost to Macedon 4.8 (32) - 1.7 (13). “We’re are still chasing that premiership,” he said. “We need at least two more wins in the final rounds to make finals; I’m confident we can achieve that.” The club has invited Meacham to play a role on the club’s committee after his coaching job ends. The hunt to replace him has begun, with the club looking for an experienced coach to take over the role. It’s hoping to have someone appointed before the end of the present season. Tara Murray

Jets regroup after slump

It was heartbreak for the Sunbury Lions as they tried to hold on against a fast-finishing Redan in the Ballarat Football League. In a match honouring MH17 flight victims Maree and Albert Rizk, the Lions were the better team for most of the day, holding the lead until late in the final quarter before falling short, 16.7 (103) - 17.5 (107). As Redan was coming at the Lions in the last quarter, a free kick and goal Redan’s way at the 20-minute mark was the turning point. The Lions led by 20 points when Redan got the goal to bring it back to 14 points. A push and shove after the goal resulted in a Redan player sprawled on the ground, and he was given a free kick in front of goal without the ball returning to the middle. Not only did he kick the goal and reduce the margin to eight points but defender Adam Short was given a yellow card and sent from the field, leaving the Lions a man down. Redan kicked two goals after that, including the sealer with two minutes to go. Lions coach Rick Horwood said he was proud of his side’s performance against top-of-the-table Redan. “I thought we had it,” he said in the rooms after the game. “But we dropped off with our discipline, and good sides will hurt you when you do that. It was a valuable lesson … we paid the ultimate price. “I’m really disappointed for the players and the club. It came down to a second goal from a free kick.” Horwood said it was almost a perfect first half, as the Lions led by 34 points at the main break. “Our endeavour, attack on the footy, keeping to structure … it wasn’t the perfect half but wasn’t far from it. I was really rapt with how we went about it. “For us to push a top-of-the-ladder side, it shows we’re learning to stick to the game plan, and why can’t we do that next week again?” Horwood said an eye injury to David Kovasevic in the third quarter was a turning point. “He got poked in the eye and it was a pretty bad poke. “It was the turning point of the game, when you go in with only one ruckman and that happens. “Trent Stead [who went into the ruck] played a good role and took up the challenge. We didn’t lose a great deal, but the midfield’s mind changes when you lose your only ruckman.” Stead and Kovasevic were named among the best players, as were Matthew Medcraft, Andrew Duhau and James Rizk. “James controlled the game with his ball use and was in our best players on a day that celebrated his parents,” Horwood said. “To play so well shows character.”

Sunbury Jets’ women’s side won’t make finals, but there has been massive improvement on last year’s Big V division 1 performance. The Jets look set to finish sixth or seventh, a long way from the wooden spoon ‘won’ in 2014. The final game of the year is on Saturday night against Hawthorn. Coach Michael Thomas said it was disappointing not to make finals. “There are lots of positives … the new girls Genevieve McCorkell, Leanne Urbon and Kelsey Sigl have settled in really well, and there’s been major development with some of the younger girls.” Thomas said a mid-year slump was the difference between missing and making finals. “Early on, we had some really good wins against Geelong and Mildura when we clicked together,” he said. “We then had a couple of tough losses in the middle of the year. “We struggled with the chemistry as we tried different things.” Thomas said a big positive was the development of some of the younger players. “Tamara Knox has played most of the year and played really well. Alex Darby has stepped up into the senior side. “Chloe Angove is not even in our youth side. She is in our under-18 side. She has become available, and has played the last four games.” He said having an import for the first time in Kelsey Sigl has also been a success, with the club looking at having another import next year. “The side has a budget for next year to have an import again. It will be Kelsey or someone else like her. We need to look at whether she wants to come back again.” Thomas said while they will only win two or three more games than last year, 2015 has seen a big improvement. “There’s always going to be improvement when you finished on the bottom of the ladder. There’s a big gap to make up, and other teams have improved too. “Finishing sixth or seventh is a significant improvement,” Thomas said. On Saturday night, the Jets tested top side Whittlesea Pacers. After a poor start, the Jets trailed by four points at half-time, and ended up losing 92-79. Thomas, who is out of contract at season’s end, said he would like to continue next year. “We’ve had an average season and an OK season. I want to finish on a better note.” Tara Murray

MOTOR The HR-V’s back, and about time After an eight-year hiatus, Honda reintroduced the HR-V to Australia this year to give it a stake in the ever-growing small SUV market. You wonder what took it so long. The company had put its weight behind its versatile little Jazz in recent times, so it made sense to draw on its popularity with a crossover vehicle. Its main rival here is the Nissan Qashqai and, like its competitor, it’s nice to look at and drive. Inside, there’s that Honda quality which gives it an upmarket feel. The dashboard is similar to the Jazz with clean lines and the 7-inch swipe-able touchscreen that controls and displays multimedia, Bluetooth connections, phone and performance information. Voice control is available via Siri, if you have an iPhone. You can also sync your iPhone to use Apple Maps, though this feature isn’t available for Android phones. The only alternative is to use an app that uses a lot of mobile data. The touch screen also shows the reverse camera display and features “LaneWatch”, which provides a rear view down the passenger side when you indicate to turn or change lanes to the left. I found this a little distracting at first but eventually found it no different to looking at the side mirror, which Honda recommends you continue to check. This, like the reverse camera, makes up for the poor rearward visibility. As with most other Honda models, the climate control panel is also touchscreen-

controlled, which can be a little tricky while you’re driving. As you’d expect from Honda the interior design makes good use of space. There’s plenty of elbow-room and the seats are comfortable with nice back support. Legroom at the back is good, too, although the curved roofline means headspace is pretty tight for anyone on the tallish side. The HR-V features Honda’s multi-adjustable Magic Seats in the rear, which give it an edge over most of its rivals in terms of capacity. It’s

just a quick adjustment to turn from a small wagon into a mini-van van with 1032 litres of cargo space. The HR-V steers nicely and the continuously variable automatic transmission generally slips through gears seamlessly. It’s only when you put your foot down that the 1.8-litre petrol engine, which comes from a Honda Civic, screams in protest as the transmission tries to catch up. One way around this is to go down a gear in semi-manual mode via the paddle shifters.

Fuel economy is excellent, with a published combined rate or 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres, which would be the case if you keep rapid acceleration and downshifting to a minimum. Prices for the HR-V start at $28,343 for the VT-i. Off-roader handy in city traffic The Holden Colorado 7 has been upgraded to match on the street its outstanding off-road capability. This is most evident in the top-of-the-range Colorado 7 LTZ diesel automatic, which goes to market at $50,990 plus on-road costs. With its contemporary twin grille with mesh inserts, and chrome surrounds, the Colorado 7 LTZ has rugged looks to match its off-road ability. But with the latest in projector lighting up front, chrome power fold mirrors and door handles, fog lamp surrounds and window detailing, it’s not out of place among the latest automotive city slickers. Colorado LTZ models exude an air of luxury inside the cabin, with additions including heated leather-trim seats (optional on Colorado LTZ Crew Cab). In 50 kilometres of urban action, the Colorado 7 diesel consumption ranged between 13 and 15 litres per 100 kilometres. Over a similar distance on the motorway, the figure floated between 5 and 6 litres per 100 kilometres – this is the consummate cruiser. The “7” in the Colorado’s name refers to its seven-seat capability. Seating arrangements include a second row 60:40 three-seat bench and 50:50 separate seats in the third row. All seats are on the firm side and could wear out their welcome on a long run. Holden has successfully done what it set out to do – add improvements to its Colorado 7 SUV that smooth out facets of its off-road ruggedness and broaden its appeal by making it more family-friendly.
