Teaming up for love Sunbury’s Roxanne Graf and Diggers Rest’s Hillary Clarke are picking up pace ahead of Melbourne’s premier winter charity running event. The sisters, who are competing in memory of a late uncle, are stepping up their training and fundraising efforts for this year’s Run Melbourne. Their Team Love, which has 10 members, has already smashed an original target of $1000, collecting close to $2400 for beyondblue. Ms Graf, who will take part in the 21-kilometre half-marathon, expects the challenge to be mental as much as physical. ‘‘I’ve always wanted to do something like this but didn’t think I was capable,’’ she says. ‘‘But I’ve done the Mother’s Day Classic and we’ve been training a lot. ‘‘I’m running almost every day and we’ve been doing the Tan Track every Sunday.’’ Ms Graf, who has had her own battles with post-natal depression and anxiety, says the event is a great opportunity to honour her uncle and raise money for an organisation that has helped her and others through tough times. Solo Sunbury’s high cost Residents of an independent Sunbury could face annual rate increases of at least 8.5 per cent over 10 years. New figures released by transition auditors are fuelling speculation that Sunbury’s planned secession from Hume is increasingly unlikely. But pro-split proponents maintain that modelling used by Frank Vincent and John Watson to draw their conclusions is fundamentally flawed. Mr Vincent and Mr Watson were appointed by the state government to investigate the separation. They have warned that service levels in the new municipality could decline if
rates were to rise by only 5.5 per cent a year, as estimated by a previous CT Management report. The auditors said even a 10-year cross-subsidy from Hume council, in lieu of rates from Melbourne Airport, would mean that a Sunbury council would be unable to maintain service levels, staffing and delivery of foreshadowed capital works in the long-term with increases of 5.5 per cent a year. ‘‘We consider that some material decline in service levels would be required over time in order to prevent deterioration in Sunbury’s long-term financial position,’’ they said. The auditors’ latest information sheets, part of a series of updates, aim to explore the impact

Scenarios considered by the auditors, who based their findings on modelling undertaken this year by Deloitte Access Economics, include rate increases for Hume council still including Sunbury (5.3 per cent annually to 2020-21), an independent, subsidised Sunbury (8.5 per cent annually) and Sunbury without cross-subsidy (14.5 per cent in 2016-17 and 8.5 per cent a year thereafter). The modelling does not take into account the state government’s plans to cap council rates at the consumer price index from next year. Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell questioned how auditors
would decide which group of experts was more credible. “If they were to start from square one and review every facet of the operation, it would add to their credibility, but that’s not what they are doing,’’ he said. Sunbury Community Progress Association president Alison Cunningham said she feared an independent Sunbury would get ‘‘left behind’’. She said a smaller municipality would be reliant on perpetual growth, developing every square inch of available land. Wait for bypass, link may be decades away “Based on the traffic modelling and other evidence and submissions, the panel recognises the existing road network is constrained and often congested – a situation which residential development and other growth will worsen,” the panelists reported. “Much of the expected extra travel demand pressure will continue to fall on two-lane undivided roads, such as Sunbury Road.” “The panel strongly supports building the Bulla bypass and that part of the Melbourne airport link south of Somerton Road as soon as possible.” The panel said the proposed alignments for the two roads, up to six lanes each, would have the least impact on private properties.

Reprieve for commuters Restrictions barring Sunbury commuters from Bendigo-bound V/Line trains will not be enforced until next year. The state government has also promised that Sunbury will receive 10 extra peak Metro services a week, while it will investigate extra off-peak services to provide more trains and seats for people travelling to and from the town. The measures announced on Friday followed an outpouring of complaints after a new Public Transport Victoria timetable effectively snubbed Sunbury passengers. Sunbury MP Josh Bull, who sought urgent action on the matter in Parliament last week, said Sunbury would get an extra morning peak city-bound service and another evening peak service within six to eight weeks. Mr Bull said he had been advised the introduction of “pick-up and set-down” restrictions would be delayed. ‘‘This means [passengers] will still be able to catch a V/Line train until additional services come on board,’’ he said. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, the new timetable announced by PTV removed Sunbury as a pick-up station for Bendigo trains travelling through to Melbourne in the morning peak. It also removed Sunbury as a drop-off station for evening peak trains travelling north. Overcrowding on country train services between Melbourne and Bendigo has been a long-running issue for peak-time commuters since the electrification of the line to Sunbury in 2012. The restrictions were hailed by people in towns such as Woodend, but Sunbury passengers were furious, having long been promised that they would continue to have a choice of services. Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell was among those who urged Transport Minister Jacinta Allan to intervene. ‘‘The decision was completely unexpected

A Sunbury man who avoided almost 300 CityLink tolls by using fake numberplates has been nabbed by police. The 42-year-old man was arrested on Thursday afternoon after a month-long investigation. Police said he had been dodging tolls since the start of the year, avoiding 290 trip fees. Senior Constable Chris McCran said police were able to find the man despite the false plates. “People think if they use false plates or cover up their rego numbers … they won’t get caught,” Senior Constable McCran said. “That’s not the case; there are a number of other ways we can detect drivers trying to defraud the system.” The man has been charged with obtaining financial advantage by deception, using false numberplates, unlicensed driving, driving an unregistered motor vehicle and unregistered trailer, and theft of diesel. He has been bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court in August. Budget papers last month showed that the state’s motorists are fined an average of $420,000 a day for evading tolls. Fines for dodging tolls have jumped almost 40 per cent since 2010 and are expected to reach $153 million in 2015-16.

The Bulla bypass and Melbourne Airport link are a step closer after the projects were endorsed by an independent planning panel. In January, state Planning Minister Richard Wynne appointed three panelists to assess Amendment C190 to the Hume Planning Scheme. This aims to set aside land earmarked for the proposed airport link and Bulla bypass. A report to the minister released last month recommended Amendment C190 be adopted with only minor changes and that the bypass and first stage of the airport link be expedited. But VicRoads suggests these projects could be 15 to 20 years away and are linked to a planned outer metropolitan ring road.

Free vote call on same-sex vows By Matt Crossman and Lexi Cottee Regional senators are being urged to support a free vote on same-sex marriage, with an increasing number of constituents in McEwen and Bendigo writing to their federal MPs expressing support for changes to the Marriage Act. Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters said a recent public declaration of support from central Victorian businesses was another example of how people feel about the issue. ‘‘Even if Senator [Bridget] McKenzie and Senator [Michael] Richardson are at odds with
the views of Bendigo, it would be disappointing if they denied their fellow Liberal and National MPs a free vote,’’ Ms Chesters said. Federal Opposition leader Bill Shorten recently introduced a same-sex marriage bill, referencing Gough Whitlam’s famous line, “It’s time.” The bill is expected to be voted on in spring but is unlikely to succeed unless Coalition MPs are allowed a free vote. Ms Chesters said same-sex marriage was a matter of social justice and equity. She believes the numbers are there to support the changes. ‘‘Combined with the support of minor
parties, it would only take a few Liberal or National MPs and senators to vote in favour,’’ she said. ‘‘We know the vast majority of Australians support it and, as elected representatives, it is our duty to reflect the wishes of our constituents.’’ Bendigo-based Senator McKenzie said she would never oppose MPs and senators being given the right to a conscience vote on the matter. She said she strongly supported the recognition of same-sex relationships through civil unions but believed marriage was a sacred
commitment between a man and woman. McEwen MP Rob Mitchell said he supported same-sex marriage and would vote accordingly. He abstained from voting in 2012. “I wanted to make sure that religious institutions that don’t wish to marry same-sex couples don’t have to, and I didn’t want to see same-sex couples taking them to court for discrimination,” he said. “But both of these concerns have been addressed in Bill Shorten’s bill.” Mr Mitchell said his office had received about 40 letters or emails from McEwen constituents and most were in favour of same-sex marriage.

Sunbury Community Health’s volunteer driving service, which has been running for 12 years, takes pre-approved Sunbury, Diggers Rest and Bulla residents to appointments outside the area when a family member or friend is unable to take them. Sunbury site sells for $40m By Matt Crossman The $40 million sale of a 206-hectare residential site south of Sunbury to Chinese investors represents a great opportunity for the growing town, a long-time councillor believes. Cr Jack Ogilvie said the site, at 725 Sunbury Road, will be covered by a precinct structure plan being worked on by the Metropolitan Planning Authority (MPA) and Hume council. He said the new area, to be known as Sunbury South, could include a new train station, schools and industrial and commercial centres to provide ‘‘more jobs than Sunbury has ever seen’’. As reported by Star Weekly online, the site was believed to have been sold to a partnership including Shanghai Ceyuan Investment Management Centre and a Melbourne-based Chinese businessman. The land includes Jacksons Creek frontage and could become home to 1500-1700 homes. According to the MPA, the 800-hectare Sunbury South precinct will eventually lead to the construction of close to 10,000 houses, a town centre, schools, open space and community centres. There are also plans for industrial and commercial centres that will generate almost 7000 new jobs. The plan is expected to be finalised sometime next year. Cr Ogilvie said sale of the land next to Craiglee Vineyard would help give Sunbury a critical mass to attract new infrastructure. ‘‘Sunbury is a great place to live. We’ve got people lining up,’’ Cr Ogilvie said.
‘‘People say that development will create infrastructure problems, but developers will have to contribute to all that infrastructure [through the growth areas infrastructure contribution and developer contributions].’’ Cr Ogilvie said the council would continue to push for projects such as the outer metropolitan ring road and Bulla bypass to be brought forward and ease traffic woes. ‘‘Some people will say they don’t want Sunbury to grow, but that’s out of our hands because the state government has decided to

expand the growth boundary,’’ he said. ‘‘Our role is to make sure what is supposed to happen happens.’’ Cr Ogilvie said there was no reason for people to be concerned about foreign investment. ‘‘This is a great opportunity for Sunbury. We can’t be prejudiced about those who want to invest in the area.’’ The Australian Financial Review said the sale had been touted as the biggest residential subdivision site bought by Chinese buyers. Hume council’s city sustainability director, Kelvin Walsh, said the site fronted the creek, included slopes and presented challenges the MPA would need to consider in integrating these developments into the rest of the Sunbury South precinct structure plan.

The best argument for increasing the speed limit on the Calder Freeway out-bound on most of the current 80km/h section is that so many drivers ignore it. Probably about 10 per cent just keep going at 100. That’s not safe. The rest of us have to take care to protect them from themselves. As for short lengths with no emergency stopping lanes and inadequate merging in and out lanes at overpasses – go for a drive on a country road that is 100km/h, to Lancefield, Riddells Creek, those past Diggers Rest. One lane each way, no median strip. Dirt on the left if you break down. Overpasses? No, crossroads with a little curve of bitumen for the 90-degree turn. I read with interest the front-page story about the unfortunate accident involving a kangaroo and car that resulted in the motorist sustaining injuries. It was indeed unfortunate for both the injured driver but also the kangaroo, which no doubt sustained life-ending wounds. The story had me recalling my initial driving test many years ago. I learned way back then that advertised speed limits are merely the maximum allowed speed a vehicle can be operated at on any given section of road in ideal conditions. It remains the responsibility of the driver to drive at the appropriate speed based on the prevailing conditions. Any person who has been driving for

A Lancefield livestock owner has been fined $1200 in Kyneton Magistrates Court after his sheep wandered onto roads at least 12 times over two years. Macedon Ranges council took the case to court on May 21 after the landholder failed to comply with repeated warnings and pay for infringements. The court heard the landholder’s sheep were struck by cars on several occasions. The landholder was also ordered to pay council’s costs.

Members of the awareness group fear that someone could easily have been killed. Each of the recent crashes has involved riders being hit from behind in clear conditions while wearing bright clothing with bike lights on. A Sunbury father of three is recovering at home after suffering a broken leg and extensive grazing while riding near Riddells Creek on May 22. Another cyclist suffered minor injuries after being struck in Sunbury last week. The group has warned that the effects of such incidents extends beyond physical injuries, often creating significant emotional and financial stress. Bike Safe member Chris Alcefski, who has been riding for close to 30 years, said an overwhelming majority of motorists did the right thing. But the Gisborne South resident said some motorists did not appreciate the vulnerability of cyclists, especially on country roads. ‘‘You go to Europe and they don’t have that angst whereas, unfortunately, some drivers here seem to think they shouldn’t have to share the road,’’ Mr Alcefski said. ‘‘There’s definitely more cyclists on our roads these days.’’ Mr Alcefski urged cyclists to make sure they could be easily seen by carrying flashing lights and wearing fluorescent clothing, helmets, ■ shoes or gloves. ‘‘It might be the difference ■ ■ between someone seeing you or not,’’ he ■ said. ■ ■Data shows three cyclist Transport Accident Commission claims involving hospitalisation in Macedon Ranges and 10 in Hume in the past five years.

Sunbury residents are being urged to inform themselves about elder abuse amid reports that it’s occurring regularly. Sunbury Community Health (SCH) has launched a campaign to promote awareness about the problem after a steady flow of complaints by seniors. Health worker Maria BowmanTOTAL said she had dealt with 15 reports in theTOTAL past VALUE two years, many relating to financial VALUE $196 deception. She had no doubt $196 many more residents had been victims of elder abuse, which can also be physical, sexual, psychological or social. ‘‘The most common form is financial, which can be anything from people moving with their wife and kids into grandma’s house and using her concession to pay the bills, through to people taking over land titles,’’ Ms Bowman said. ‘‘It’s also extremely common for elderly people to give a trusted loved one control over their bank key card, so they can pay their bills for them. ‘‘It’s then very easy for someone to siphon off small amounts without it being detected.’’ Ms Bowman said SCH offered free, confidential support and could quickly connect people with solicitors and Seniors Rights Victoria. ‘‘Clients can raise concerns while talking to a physical therapist or dietitian. ‘‘It can be a simple discussion about \ concerns and talking through a their \\ plan.’’ safety Matt Crossman

Council a septic trailblazer By Matt Crossman
The wastewater works were undertaken at properties identified by a council-led audit of 431 sites. The audit found that septic systems on some blocks were failing, including a number close to local waterways. Landowners of affected properties were given the chance to improve their wastewater systems, with 70 per cent of the cost covered by the council through funding and in-kind support. The latest works follow the completion of a Western Water pipeline connecting 30 other properties, including the town’s hotel and primary school, to a new sewer system.
New septic systems installed at dozens of Mount Macedon properties will help prevent bacteria and viruses seeping into nearby waterways. The works, part of a $1.2 million program completed by Macedon Ranges council in conjunction with the state government and Western Water, have brought 63 private properties up to Environment Protection Authority standards. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said it was the first time a Victorian council had helped fund upgrades of onsite wastewater systems.

wastewater system installed at his Mount Macedon property, said the project would not have been possible without the council’s support. He said that while the extensive works led to some inconvenience, the environmental benefits were significant. ‘‘We went from a zero-cost small-scale system to an installation that has disrupted a large area of our property and which requires ongoing maintenance and operating expense,’’ Mr Tickner said. ‘‘However, the environmental outcomes are positive and we appreciate the council’s contribution to installation costs.’’

Investigators from the sex crimes squad set up a caravan in Lancefield last Thursday and Friday as they continued to hunt the men responsible for a violent home invasion. Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Manuell said that while police had received information from a number of sources, a breakthrough had yet to be made. A woman, 36, and her partner, 42, were tied up after two men, armed with what police believe to have been a .22 calibre rifle, stormed their house in Red Gap Road about 2am on May 29. Senior Sergeant Manuell said police still wanted to speak to a man described as being about 182 centimetres tall, between 30 and 40 years old, of medium build and with pale skin. Shop thefts arrest
A Geelong woman has been remanded in custody after being arrested for theft of goods valued at $25,000 from hairdressing salons, cafes and retail stores in Kyneton, Woodend, Romsey and Lancefield. Kyneton police’s Detective Sergeant Steve Cole said the woman, 35, had been charged with the theft of items dating back to August last year. Many are yet to be recovered. A teenage boy was killed after a car and a truck collided on Kilmore Road in Gisborne on Friday afternoon. The boy was a passenger in the car which was involved in a collision at the intersection of Saunders Road about 4.20pm. The driver of the car, believed to be a man in his 20s, was flown to hospital in a critical condition. The driver of the truck was not hurt. Police are investigating. Trees to honour medic The family of a doctor who began practising in Kyneton in the 1970s will maintain a strong connection to the town after going online to donate trees for the district hospital’s new contemplative garden. Other people are being encouraged to join members of Dr Andrew Shipley’s family, who will take part in a planting day this Sunday from 2.30-4.30pm. Siblings Janet, Michael and Alison saw the chance to donate trees as a fitting way to honour their father, who died in 2008 after more than 30 years of medical service. The trio have happy memories of joining Dr Shipley on rounds and having fun at hospital Christmas parties.

Hands-on learning leads to life-long knowledge

raemar College encourages students to tap into their individual creativity and curiosity, to learn through a handson approach and explore the fields of science, technology and mathematics. Learning and teaching programs have been designed to provide tactile experiences, allowing students to physically undertake tasks, helping them understand how studies can be applied to real-life situations.
Living in a world where there is an increasing demand for skills associated with making rather than using, Braemar College has introduced a new subject for middleschool students, called Making. Making provides them with understanding of the logical processes involved in systematically solving problems and then expanding this into a ‘making’ experience. Younger students are also given a hands-on learning experience. Years five and six students have been working with Sphero robotic balls and writing and testing their own computer programs.
Lego Mindstorm technology has been introduced into classrooms, allowing students to build and program their own robots. The Space Challenge pack allows them to create space travel craft. Recently, Braemar College acquired a 3D printer enabling senior students to create 3D computer models and print their creations. Braemar College is now looking to introduce 3D pens for 3D model creations. Two specialist rooms within the college resource centre have been revamped to enhance the students’ Making experiences. Furthermore, the science, technology, engineering and mathematics hub (STEM) provides a space where students can build logic and reasoning skills through the practical application of their learning. Braemar College believes young people are innate users of technology and, by providing hands-on learning experiences that are both engaging and challenging, Braemar will help them develop critical thinking skills and a love of innovation. Despite TAC Cup results not falling their way, the Calder Cannons continue to show encouraging signs with an eye to the future. Missing several of their top players due to injuries and Vic Metro and VFL commitments, the Cannons were able to stay with a classy Queensland side for three quarters on Saturday. Up against it in the last quarter as the Scorpions kicked with the wind, the Cannons lost 13.8 (86) - 8.11 (59). Cannons coach Andrew Johnston said he thought his side played really well in the first. “We didn’t get reward for effort in the first quarter,” he said. “We needed to get some scoreboard pressure in terms of goals. “They were able to get back into the game in the second quarter. “In the third quarter, they played the way we needed to play in the last quarter. They were
composed and hit their targets and were able to get us on the rebound. In the last quarter, we were pushing up hill with them kicking to the wind.” Johnston said one of the consequences of fielding a young and inexperienced side at this level was that the skills weren’t necessarily as good as those of the opposition. “We know at the moment we tend to fumble a little bit,” he said. “You need to be cleaner at this level, you need to be composed, you have to have smart footballers. “Our guys are still learning that. We were shown up in some of those areas, [but] I will never question their effort.” Johnston said some of the younger players were showing they would be in contention to stay on the list next season.
“Some of the 17-years-olds who have come in over the last month have been really, really good,” he said. “[Jackson] McDonald came in this week and struggled a bit but will be better for it. [Lachlan] Bramble was good last week and was OK today. “Jack Reaper has been good. His opponent kicked one or two goals and it was the same last week. “Unfortunately, Jaidyn Owen, his second game for the year, went down with a shoulder. He should be good and hopefully he comes back.” He said the likes of Ryan Baker, Bramble and Callum Moorfield had two games under their belts and were hopefully getting to grips with “what it takes”. From the Ranges to Rio By Tara Murray When Bridgette Hardy decided to take up rowing, no-one, including herself, knew what would come of it. A spontaneous decision that would involve Bridgette and her mum driving from Mount Macedon to Melbourne early every Sunday morning for two years, turned out to be a life-changer. In August, Hardy will be one of the eights team to represent Australia at the 2015 World Rowing Junior Championship in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Hardy remembers the strange reactions she got when she decided to pick up the oars in year nine. “I wanted to try a new sport and I thought about doing rowing,” Hardy said. “It was a left-of-field sport and everyone was saying ‘you can do netball instead’. “I didn’t think I would last that long.”
It has been a whirlwind time recently for Hardy, who is now studying year 12 at Geelong Grammar. “At school we had heard chatter that other coaches were talking about us and possibly being involved with the junior state program. “They wanted all eight of us [from the school team], but only five of us decided we wanted to be part of the state team, so we had to do individual trials.” All five girls were selected and in the space of two weeks were in Sydney competing against other state crews for the right to represent Australia. “We had to make [a qualifying] time,” Hardy said. “In the final, we didn’t make the time but we had made it in a previous race, so we were [still] hoping we got picked. “Rowing Australia turned us down and we thought we weren’t going [to Rio].” The team appealed and won and is now busy training for the championships.
“Monday to Friday, I train with the girls from Geelong Grammar doing land, ergo and weights sessions. We alternate weekends between Melbourne and Geelong. “Right now, technically, we need to work on getting better as a team. Individually, we are really strong. At the moment we’re looking at a podium position.” Hardy is hoping this is the start of her rowing career for Australia. She plans to improve her chances by attending school in America when she finishes year 12. “I’m looking into schools … they are really strong and have rowing programs. Hopefully, it’ll put me in a position to row for Australia.” The crew is looking for donations to help the young rowers get to Brazil for the championships. “It cost $8000 per person,” Hardy said. “We are looking to raise $25,000 between us to help pay for the trip. New Redbacks, same old bite By Tara Murray Romsey Netball Club continues to match it with the top sides in the Riddell District Netball League despite a change of personnel in the off-season. The Redbacks have five wins, a draw, a bye and a loss in the opening eight rounds. The draw came when the game against Rupertswood was abandoned because of the weather. Defender Stephanie Barnes said it was at the defensive end of the court where the changes had happened. “Obviously we lost a few players but we’re really happy with the season so far,” she said. “We knew we had big shoes to fill and we played around in our defence. “Tayla [Behan] came across from Riddell while one of the girls said they knew a player, Soli Ropati, who was really keen to come to trials. “Soli [who plays under-19’s in the Victorian Netball League] has fitted in really well.” At the other end of the court, the Redbacks are fielding a familiar combination. “Our attacking end is a strong attack and the last four seasons have had a similar line-up,” Barnes said. “Hope [Evans] is a tall target and she and Bronwyn [Blair] have played together for so many years “Bron knows how she [Evans] plays and gets out of her way and lets her do her thing.” Evans leads the competition in goals scored.

“Hope has had three kids. Some players slow down when they get to this point in their career but she is just getting to her best,” Barnes said. Barnes, who coaches the C-grade and under-19s, said both sides had blown her away. Another loss, but young Lions show new grit Sunbury Lions appear to have turned a corner despite losing to North Ballarat City in the Ballarat Football League. The Lions have been disappointing in recent weeks, being handed football lessons by Redan and Bacchus Marsh. On Saturday, against the reigning premier, the Lions showed encouraging signs despite the 19.12 (126) -12.8 (80) loss. Lions coach Rick Horwood saw the result as a step in the right direction. “I was pleased with the effort,” he said. “We had six changes from last week and were a very young side. “There were good signs. I was disappointed after the last couple of weeks, but the players
gave the commitment that they wanted to stay in the game, not pick and choose when they want to play.” Trent Stead, in his fourth game, kept North Ballarat’s Shaun Lyle to two goals, while Dean Muir, in his first senior outing, also impressed. “For Trent to keep Lyle to two goals was really important,” Horwood said. “Tanner Bell, another younger player, spent time on Derick Micallef, who I think is the best small forward in the competition, and for periods was able to go with him. “Ben Guthrie played his best game for the season, and Anthony Sammut responded well after being dropped.”

Kangaroos back from the dead By Tara Murray Sunbury Kangaroos coach Chris Meacham and his coaching staff thought their side was heading for a second straight loss in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. Scores were level at three-quarter time against Broadford, but the Roos found themselves down with not long to go. “They [Broadford] were up by two goals late in the last quarter and we were up against it,” Meacham said. “I thought we were gone. Everything was going against us and we were giving away free kicks. “We kicked one goal, but we thought we were gone and didn’t think there was much time left.” Enter Jake Young, who had been the Kangaroos’ best all day. “He has been showing promise and threatening the last couple of years for a breakout game,” Meacham said. “He kicked a goal and the siren went not long afterwards.” The Kangaroos got home 23.11 (89) - 13.8 (86) to be 7-1 for the season and third on the ladder on percentage. The Sunbury Jets’ senior teams both lost thrillers in Big V division 1 basketball on Sunday. The women were first on court at Boardman Reserve, matched against Craigieburn, and were missing import Kelsey Sigl. But that didn’t seem to matter as they jumped to an 18-7 lead at quarter-time. The Eagles turned the tables to lead by five points at the main break. In the second half, the teams went goal for goal and at the final siren the Eagles were in front 67-65. Both sides missed numerous shots, their shooting percentage shared at a meagre 33 per cent for the game.
