Sunbury V/ Line snub By Esther Lauaki An ongoing dispute between V/Line commuters on the Bendigo line came to a head last week with new timetables effectively snubbing Sunbury passengers. Overcrowding on country train services between Melbourne and Bendigo has been a long-running issue for peak-time commuters since the electrification of the line to Sunbury in 2012. Now, a new timetable effective from June 21 removes Sunbury as a pick-up station for Bendigo trains travelling through to Melbourne in the morning peak. It also removes Sunbury as a ‘drop-off’ station for
evening peak trains travelling north. Woodend commuters have taken to social media to air frustrations about country trains packed with “suburban passengers”, who they say should be using metropolitan trains. Woodend resident Maxwell Winchester believes Sunbury passengers could face fines if they use regional services. He says many V/Line passengers are thrilled that Sunbury stops have been removed. “We’re still waiting to get a formal confirmation from V/Line, but we’re very happy,” he told Star Weekly. “It’s unreasonable for someone, who commutes two hours each way from Bendigo daily, to have to stand while passengers with
much shorter commutes sit on a regional train and take that seat.” Mr Winchester says sometimes carriages are so crowded that train staff can’t get through to check tickets. The previous Coalition state government promised Sunbury commuters access to both V/Line and Metro trains after the line was electrified. A Sunbury commuter, who didn’t want to be named, says the new timetable essentially prevents Sunbury commuters using V/Line. Sunbury commuters use country trains to bypass the city loop, he says, saving up to 20 minutes in travel each way, each day, and up to 3.5 hours every week. “This has been a long-running issue for Sunbury commuters
since the electrification … but, essentially, the facts remain. The [former] Transport Minister Terry Mulder clearly stated in Parliament … that a ‘dual service’ is being offered and that Sunbury commuters can board V/Line trains,” the man says. “So now, some three years down the track, V/Line has decided to withdraw access to their services for all Sunbury commuters without any consultation whatsoever and contrary to minister Mulder’s statement in Parliament. “Clearly this is unacceptable and an affront to all Sunbury residents.” He says Hume council has assured him that, despite the changes, Sunbury commuters will not be thrown off country trains.

Police Minister Wade Noonan commended police efforts to address family violence at a visit to Gisborne police station last Wednesday. “Family violence is the number one law and order issue …new encrypted digital radios will help police keep the community safe,’’ he said. Hunt on after sex attack Detectives have released a computer-generated image of one of two men who sexually assaulted a woman during a home invasion at Lancefield, while posing as a police officer. The Sexual Crime Squad is continuing its investigation into the attack in which a 36-year-old woman and her 42-year-old partner were tied up by two armed men who broke into their rural property on Red Gap Road about 2am on May 29, searching for money. Both offenders wore dark balaclavas and yellow fluorescent vests with the word “police” written on them. The burglars took the woman into a bedroom, where she was sexually assaulted and threatened, before they fled in a car. Detectives are looking for a 30-40-year-old male, 183 centimetres tall, of medium build with pale skin, wearing dark track pants and top. Witnesses described the car as pale coloured, an older model four-door sedan, possibly from the 1990s, possibly a four-cylinder, with black trim running horizontally along the doors from the rear mudguard to front mudguard. Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Manuell said investigators were confident someone has information that could help. “This was a terrifying experience for the victims, who were attacked in their own home,” detective sergeant Manuell said. “We’re concerned that the offenders remain at large. We’re appealing for anyone who might have seen anything suspicious in the vicinity of Red Gap Road on the night to get in contact with us.” Detectives will set up a caravan in Lancefield this Thursday, 5pm until 9pm, and on Friday 10am-2pm. Outdated analogue radios in country Victoria that allow people to listen in on police operations will be progressively replaced with a secured digital system from next month. The state budget earmarked funding to upgrade the radios of country police in response to long-held concerns that people can tune in to police communications via a smartphone app or scanner. Gisborne police senior sergeant Paul Cliffe said an encrypted digital communication system would protect the privacy of family
violence victims, in particular, in smaller regional areas and would stop perpetrators tracking police movements. “We need a secure network. The information that goes over the radio is very sensitive and private, information that the public should not be able to hear.” He said officers had worked hard to respond to road safety, property-related crime, drugs and violence, as well. “We work very closely with other agencies that we refer people to so they can get the help they need. “It’s about referral and making sure that we’re

Men and women who helped battle the flames in one of the state’s worst bushfire seasons have been honoured with National Emergency Medals. Twenty-one Woodend CFA members were among the recipients in a presentation ceremony at Kyneton Town Hall on June 2. National Emergency Medals were awarded to long-serving members who contributed significant service in response to the tragic bushfire season from January to March, 2009, including the Black Saturday fires which claimed 173 lives and destroyed 2029 homes. Woodend first lieutenant Mike Dornau, a medal recipient, said he was just playing his part for the community. “It’s an honour to receive a medal. I’m very happy to be recognised and it was a beautiful evening, but we don’t do it to get the awards,” he said. “There were a number of fires during that period. Dianne Blair Foggo has had many jobs but says she doesn’t feel like she’s worked a day in years. The Kyneton resident was made a member of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday honours for significant service to tertiary education administration and development, to the advancement of women and to industrial relations. “It’s such an honour – I’m very excited about it,” she said. “I’ve done a lot of work for many organisations over the years. Never ever did I think that all those years ago, as a teacher, I would end up here. This means so much to me.” Ms Blair Foggo’s long list of credentials in education includes being president of the Australian Education Union, past chair of the Aboriginal Education Committee and, recently, deputy chancellor of Victoria University. Ms Blair Foggo was commissioner of Fair Work Australia for 18 years and vice-president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions in the early 1990s. She is a patron of the Women in Industrial Relations Interest Group and a life member of the Industrial Relations Society of Victoria. “I was involved in all these things because it was my passion,” she said. “Because they were my passion, it didn’t feel like work to me. When I started [teaching], there were mainly men in the [education] union, there were very few women … I thought it was about time for women to have a say in their own industry.” The automotive and airline industries were among the most challenging and interesting of the many she represented during her time with Fair Work Australia, she said. “There’s something very satisfying about solving disputes when people are having a hard time doing it for themselves.”

Forum confronts ice scourge By Esther Lauaki Sunbury residents want to freeze the high-profile drug ice out of their community. About 100 people turned out to a drug information evening late last month to learn about the drug, how to raise the subject of illegal drug use with friends and family, and what they can do to combat problems. A spokeswoman for organisers said the information session was organised in response to increasing concerns about ice and its effects in the community.
‘‘We probably receive one or two new inquiries every week, from parents or from a user,’’ she said. In March, Sunbury police’s Sergeant John Letchford described ice as a ‘‘hideous’’ drug that was ruining local lives. He said its use was widespread and had a flow-on effect to assaults, burglaries and other crime. ‘‘We’re coming across it more and more,’’ Sergeant Letchford said. The information evening, dubbed Demystifying Ice, aimed to bust myths that have grown around the drug, its use and its

users. It also highlighted the support services available. Sunbury Community Health addiction counsellor Matt Johnson said the forum had been a success. “We were very pleased with the turnout. There’s a lot of media attention surrounding
the drug at the moment, especially with the new ad campaign just out,” he said. “We wanted to give people a greater understanding and clear up some of the myths.” It was the first information session about ice use and its impacts on Sunbury. Cutting the cloth of war Stories of love, duty and resilience are pulling at the heartstrings of visitors to Kyneton Museum’s latest exhibition. The stories are conveyed through a special display of 30 costumes, called the Women of Empire exhibition. It comprises pieces from the Dressing Australia Museum of Costume collection, which will be at the museum until June 21. Commemorating the role of women during the First World War, this is the first exhibition of its kind in a museum that was originally a house – in this instance, a bank manager’s residence. Each garment has been selected from the private collection of Fiona and Keith Baverstock of Ballarat. Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson says visitors are able to visualise the times and places these costumes were worn. “They each tell a story, from nurses, doctors,
cooks and clerks behind the frontline, to society hostesses who fund-raised at home, and those who ran our farms, banks and offices,” she says. “Don’t miss this fascinating exhibition, which for just two weeks will showcase remarkable costumes that tell beautiful stories of love, duty and resilience. “We are very lucky to host such a special collection in our very own Kyneton museum.” The museum opens seven days a week, from 11am until 4pm, during the two-week exhibition. THE SUNBURY POLL – THE FACTS The Sunbury Poll was a non-compulsory postal ballot commissioned by the then Minister for Local Government and conducted in October 2013 by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) across the whole of Hume City Council. All registered voters in the City of Hume were eligible to vote. The rules governing the Sunbury Poll, established by Local Government Victoria and the VEC were written to ensure consistency with the process for conducting council elections.
Conduct of the Poll A ballot pack was sent to all eligible voters. This contained the ballot paper and instructions on how to vote. In the ballot paper, voters were asked to vote “yes” or “no” for the proposal to establish a new Shire of Sunbury. The ballot paper package included the following information: “The ‘Sunbury Poll’ is a poll of voters within the existing boundaries of the municipal district of the Hume City Council to determine the level of support for a stand-alone Sunbury Shire Council.” A map was also provided that used Deep Creek to show an “indicative” boundary of Sunbury from Hume.

Out of the 118,708 eligible voters in Hume City Council, 51% took part in the poll. Across Hume 31% of the total eligible voters voted ‘yes’. This represented 60% of all those who participated in the ballot. The Blacher Report, commissioned in early 2015 to review the process leading to the decision to establish a Sunbury council, highlighted a number of concerns about the poll process. The Blacher Report noted the Sunbury Poll was conducted to inform decision-makers about the views of residents prior to altering the structures of two municipalities. It concluded: • The poll should have been conducted in a way that ensured voters had access to all relevant information but this did not occur. This would have meant the ballot pack should have contained information on: - the proposed boundaries of the proposed new council - all the financial implications of separation – that is, what rates residents are likely to have to pay under the new arrangements - the impact on services and future capital works - a “yes” and “no” argument. • The information that was available was not reflected in subsequent decisions made about the establishment of the new council. - The Local Government Sunbury out of Hume Panel introduced a new concept – that Hume City Council should pay a cross subsidy to the new council. - This was not considered in the two KPMG reports on the potential impact on rates and services available on the Local Government Victoria website, nor was it canvassed in any way prior to the poll. Therefore voters were unaware that this cross subsidy would increase the rates payable by residents remaining in Hume City Council and reduce the rates of Sunbury residents. A woman died after being struck by a car in Kyneton just before 6pm on Friday. Police believe the woman was crossing the road near the railway station when she was struck by the car. Rural wisdom on offer Rural landowners can get to the root of their agricultural issues at a free workshop this weekend. The Macedon Ranges council workshop, on Saturday, June 13, will teach landowners about cost-effective ways to manage weeds and pastures. Lancefield Equine Clinic agronomist James Almond will cover topics relevant to everyone from small landholders and horse owners to those involved in agricultural enterprises. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said many shire landowners wanted to do more to enhance and protect their land but didn’t know where to start. “The problems can seem insurmountable, particularly when it comes to managing weeds,” she said. “But this workshop will give
you simple strategies to get you started. There is a real need for this type of workshop.” The workshop will cover weed identification and eradication, weather patterns and the impact of those issues on small landholders. Mr Almond will include a farm walk as part of his presentation, which will also cover pasture selection rotations and composting. “Composting is particularly important for the management of equine properties,” he said. “Many people don’t realise that if done correctly, it can provide a valuable fertiliser to help with pasture restoration.” The workshop will runs from 10am-2pm at the Grange Cleveland Winery, Lancefield. The Plough@Trentham menu is built around a rustic French-inspired bistro, offering a fine charcuterie board of cured meats, terrines, chicken liver and port parfait, all served with crispy bread. “Our most popular dishes are the 36-hour, slow-cooked blade steak, served with mashed potato and a red wine sauce. Also the duo of lamb – a slow-cooked rolled leg served with a braised Moroccan fritter mash and green beans. And the dry aged rump,” said Mills. The Plough@Trentham also caters for functions and offers masterclasses. Upcoming events include a Truffle Masterclass Extraordinaire on Saturday, June 20, at 12.30pm. The masterclass will discuss everything truffle-related, from growing to cooking. For $120 per person, patrons will be served a four-course lunch, accompanied by an assortment of wines. SPORT Hawks soar to victory at last By Tara Murray The monkey is off the back . . . Woodend-Hesket has scored its first win of the Riddell District Football League season. The Hawks found themselves in a position they hadn’t been in all season, with |the game against Rockbank played on their terms. With a seven-goal lead at half-time, the Hawks knew they needed to keep the pressure on early in the second half to kill off any chance of a Rockbank comeback. They did just that to win 12.10 (82)-3.12 (30). Coach Ross Sleight said it was utter relief in the rooms after the game, with all seven of the
club’s senior netball and football teams getting wins on Saturday. “It’s the first time at the club, seven wins on the same day,” said Sleight, who is in his first year coaching the side. “The confidence was down with the netballers, too, so it was good for everyone to get wins.” He said the senior football side had set itself for this game. “We were coming off a pretty tough seven weeks,” he said. “We said things would get a little easier and as long as we played well we knew we would be in with a chance. “We played as a team, stuck to the game plan and played our football.”
Sleight said seven goals up was an unfamiliar position to be in at half- time. “Rockbank copped a massive spray [from their coach] at half-time, so we expected them to come out firing,” he said. “The aim in the first five minutes was to kick the first goal and then Rockbank’s heads would drop, and we did exactly that.” Sleight said it was the first time all year there had been 22 contributors. “We have being having 10-12 contributors every week . . . everyone contributed against Rockbank,” he said.. “Max Ambler and Trent Laverie were the two guys who set up the win. “We put the acid on Max at selection and said
it was make or break this week. He dominated in a variety of roles and it was his best game for the season. “Trent started the season in the forward pocket and after three rounds came to us and asked to be moved to the back pocked to find some form. “He killed it in the back pocket.” With a run of matches coming up against sides around them on the ladder, Sleight said this was the real challenge. “We’re confident there will be more wins,” he said. “The next four to five weeks will be the toughest, as we are playing teams we think we are on par with and that we can beat.”

Struggling Bulldogs find their bark Normal service has been resumed in the Bendigo Football League . . . Gisborne is back on the winners’ list. The Bulldogs have had a tough start to the season, winning just one of their opening eight matches. But they led from start to finish against Kangaroo Flat on Saturday to win 17.14 (116)-15.12 (102). Coach Rod Sharp said the match was a rare good moment for the club this year. “I’m just happy for the lads,” he said. “Jeff Gieschen [former AFL coach] told me you don’t know coaching until you’ve coached six losses in a row. “[Saturday] was a much better day,” Sharp said the team was still a work in progress. “We still made mistakes and a lot of guys are still learning,” he said. 32 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 9, 2015
“We have lapses at times and make silly mistakes and don’t play percentage football. “It happened in the last 10 minutes of the game. We were six goals up and should have won comfortably.” Sharp said the experienced guys led the way. “Ben Sonogan took 14 marks [and kicked five goals] at centre half forward. Tom May had 30-plus possessions with 11 tackles and 10 clearances,” he said. “Guys stood up across the board. “The older guys were keen to get victory and showed them how it was done.” Sharp said the win showed what the club had been working on the past four or five weeks. “We are not that bad. We’ve had a tough four to five weeks on the track to get fitter and compete for longer. “They have put in the hard work and done
extra running sessions on top of training every week. It’s good for the confidence and we think we’re a chance to win the next three matches. “The boys now understand what they need to do to win; we just need to keep doing it.” Kyneton also returned to the winners’ list with a 22.19 (151)-11.15 (81) thrashing of Maryborough. The Tigers set up the win with five goals to nil in the first quarter and were never headed. The Theodore family has achieved a lot on the basketball court over the years. But late last month they achieved one of their wildest dreams – Kayelene and her four daughters, Kayla, Brodie, Bethany and Felicity – stepped on to court together to play for Sunbury in the Melbourne Metropolitan Basketball League. The feat was not only a first for the family but a first in the league’s 21-year history. The league provides a pathway to the Big V competition, enabling players to play at a standard above domestic competition once they have retired. Kayelene who now coaches more than she plays, said the chance for them to be on court together had not been planned. “I always hoped I would get the opportunity
to play with my girls, but on the night it was a bit unexpected,” Kayelene said. “We were light-on in numbers and after a few unsuccessful calls to try and get some more players, I turned to the girls and said, OK, everyone in the car, I need all of you to play tonight.” The girls, aged between 14 and 20, share their mother’s can-do attitude. “It was pretty special to get to play with mum and my sisters,” second-eldest Brodie said. “Basketball is something we all have in common and it’s something that brings us together as a family.” Bethany, placed this match among her career highlights. “Getting to hit the court with my mum and sisters was a whole new experience for me,” she said. “I’d never really thought about it before we all stepped out on the court, but I think it
is a special moment we all now will share as a family. “Basketball is such a major part of our lives. I’ve grown up playing and it was great to be able to share the moment with my mum and sisters, all of whom have influenced my game so much.” Fourteen-year-old Felicity hopes the ‘Theodore Five’ will become a regular line-up. “For me, it was a great experience to be able to play with my mum and sisters … [it]was a thrill and an experience I won’t forget.” The basketball gene just doesn’t run only through the family’s female side. Dad David and brother Jordan are also involved in the sport. Jordan, 12, plays with Melbourne United in the Victorian Junior Basketball League and David coaches the under-16 girls at Bulleen and has coached various Sunbury teams.
Cats prove their worth despite first loss of the season The football world has got its first real insight into Macedon and where it sits in the Riddell District Football League this season. The Cats entered Saturday’s clash with Diggers Rest undefeated but without playing any of the top five sides. But in their first match against tougher opposition, the Cats showed they won’t be pushovers, despite the 11.9 (75)-10.6 (66) loss to the Burras. Coach Jeff Andrews said he believed his side could mix it with the top teams. “We were in front for most of the game,” he said. “They had to play well to beat us. We had a shot on goal to lead by 14 points in the last quarter and we missed and they took it up the other end of the field and scored. “It was good to be competitive and the next step is to win games like this.” Andrews said the off-season recruits had made a big difference. think we’ll really know where all the sides are at until about round 12 when everyone has played each other.” Romsey has jumped to top of the ladder after thrashing the Sunbury Kangaroos. The Kangaroos went into the game unbeaten
but were disappointing as Romsey’s class was on display in the 16.9 (105)- 8.14(62) win. Rupertswood was too good for Riddell, Melton Centrals defeated Kilmore, Woodend-Hesket beat Rockbank for its first win for the season and Broadford defeated Wallan.
Riddell again showed why they it’s one of the premiership favourites in the Riddell District Netball League with a massive win over Rupertswood on Saturday. Neither team had lost a match entering the game with only the Sharks’ draw against Romsey when the game was abandoned in the third quarter because of rain separating the teams on the ladder. The Bombers jumped out of the blocks and led by 12 goals at quarter-time. They managed to extend the lead in every quarter and handed the Sharks a massive thumping, winning 65-30. Mikaela Vaughan shot 34 goals and Christine Harris scored 31 for the Bombers. Ailish McCormack was best for the Sharks. Romsey jumped to third on the ladder with a 68-21 win over Sunbury Kangaroos. The Kangaroos stuck with the Redbacks in
the first quarter but then struggled to match it with the more experienced line-up. After quarter-time the Redbacks outscored the Kangaroos 55-12. Hope Evans again dominated under the ring for the Redbacks scoring 62 of her side’s goals. Evans has scored, 62, 59 and 60 goals in her last three games and has racked up the most in the competition. Soli Ropati was best on court. Meanwhile, Woodend Hesket got its first win of the season as all four Hawks sides managed victories. But Rockbank, coming off its first win since 2013, didn’t make it easy for the Hawks pushing them the whole way. The Hawks won 40-35. Georgia O’Loughlin was best on court, shooting 23 goals. Cats keep claws sharp By Tara Murray Macedon players are on court twice a week in a regime that has seen the side hold ladder-topping form. The Riddell District Netball League club A-grade side has been competing at Parkville on week nights since before the season started. The approach seems to be paying off with the Cats undefeated in the RDNL this season. Before Saturday’s game against Diggers Rest, coach Melissa Climas said the extra time on court was reaping benefits on Saturdays. said. “We have a young mid-court who are all under 20, so this (midweek play) is good for them.” Emily Tebble, Maddison and Jess Payne, and Shauna Martin are all part of the young mid-court in the senior team. “The young ones, we have to work on consistency and get them playing well for four quarters,” Climas said. “We’ve only done it once this season against Melton Centrals.” While its mid-court may be young, the Cats’ defence and shooters provide experience. Rebecca Colwell returned to the team this season. Colwell sits second on the goal-scoring table this season so far.

This project will need to be led by a person who brings the qualities and attributes needed to successfully achieve the Club’s objectives and most importantly, present the players with the opportunity to achieve all they possibly can in the game.

“We have two new defenders this season, so they are learning to play together but are both very experienced,” Climas said. “Kate McLeod is a VNL [Victorian Netball League] defender and Tarryn Mackie returns to the club after three years away.” While undefeated thus far, Climas is realistic about where her team is at. “We have not been pushed so far. We haven’t played any of the top teams, like Riddell, Rupertswood and Romsey. We’ve played Wallan, who we lost to last year, and Melton Centrals when we were in control of the game. “Finals is an option at this stage … something would have to go really wrong for us not to make finals,” Climas said.
