Independent auditors have been given 12 months to investigate questions about Sunbury’s secession from Hume. But pro-split supporters believe the state government has ‘‘broken’’ a pre-election promise to allow the creation of an independent Sunbury, and they have doubts the city will come to exist. As reported by Star Weekly online, the split has been delayed until July 1 next year in order to address queries about costings and service delivery. Speaking in Sunbury on Friday morning, Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said too many questions remained unanswered about the separation, which had been scheduled for July 1 this year. The decision comes after Hume chief executive Domenic Isola wrote to Ms Hutchins outlining the council’s fears about potential disruption to staff and implications for ratepayers. Ms Hutchins said the previous government, which gazetted orders for an independent Sunbury last October before it entered caretaker mode, had ‘‘rushed’’ the process. ‘‘I’m not confident in some of the answers I’ve been given around who would actually be collecting rubbish, who would be taking phone calls, who would be mowing lawns as of the first of July,’’ Ms Hutchins said. ‘‘I’m taking this step … to ensure we have all those systems in place in 12 months’ time so we can progress successfully rather than setting up a new Sunbury council doomed to failure.’’ Terms of reference for the auditors will be announced soon.
Brimbank council chairman John Watson and former Supreme Court judge Frank Vincent QC have been appointed. They are expected to report back to Ms Hutchins by the end of this year to allow time for consultation. Ms Hutchins did not rule out a compulsory vote on the secession, as proposed by the Australian Services Union, but she said she was not going to preempt the work of the auditors. ‘‘It’s possible they may come back with recommendations that the government will take a look at,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s about looking at what services are going to be delivered in both Sunbury and in Hume.’’ Mr Watson, who lives in Sunbury and was chief executive of the former Shire of Bulla, said the move represented a ‘‘fresh start’’. Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell and Liberal upper house MP Bernie Finn said they had doubts that the split would go ahead. ‘‘I think the government is trying to worm out of it here,’’ Mr O’Farrell said. Mr Isola said he would seek an urgent meeting with the auditors. ‘‘We have held serious concerns about the process undertaken by the previous government, including timeframes imposed, the process of asset distribution, the obligations and costs imposed on the community and the significant impact to staff,’’ he said. He urged the government to treat the difficult process as a ‘‘significant priority’’.

VCAT adds its ‘no’ to building bid By Matt Crossman A developer has lost an appeal against Macedon Ranges council’s decision to reject a controversial development on prime commercial land in Macedon. Residents were celebrating after a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) report released on Friday found that objections to the scale and density of the development were valid. The proposed $6.1 million development
in Victoria Street included five shops and 18 apartments in an area that is zoned commercial. Macedon resident Ronald Fitt said the 20or-so members of a community group that organised a pro bono barrister and raised more than $8000 for expert witnesses were ‘‘absolutely thrilled to bits’’. ‘‘It was a huge effort,’’ he said. ‘‘We’re still chewing it over, what it all means.’’ Mr Fitt said residents, who feared the development would open the way for similar developments in Macedon, planned to meet
with the council to discuss the direction of planning in the tourism town. ‘‘We just don’t want to have to go through this again,’’ he said. Mr Fitt said residents would not oppose a development in keeping with the town’s character. ‘‘The site is right in the middle of town and deserves to be developed, but it must be something that fits. We’d welcome an appropriate development there.’’ The VCAT hearing, held over five days last
December, came after consultants lodged an appeal on behalf of a property developer when the council refused a planning permit in June 2014. The council’s evidence against the development focused on scale and fire risks. South ward councillor Russell Mowatt said VCAT’s decision was an excellent outcome achieved because of the collaborative efforts of residents, council officers, experts and legal representatives. The developer could not be reached for comment.

Macedon Ranges residents fed up with the wasp plague that has swept large parts of the state are calling for more research into ways to control the introduced pest. European wasps, which are especially attracted to sweet food, drinks and meat, are a regular sight in towns including Woodend, Kyneton, Lancefield and Romsey. Their presence at picnics and other outdoor events has been so great that Kyneton District Health (KDH) and Macedon Ranges council recently issued public safety warnings. Unlike bees, wasps can sting multiple times and attacks to the throat can be fatal. According to KDH, there has been a noticeable rise in wasp stings this year. Museum Victoria entomologist Patrick Honan said climatic conditions had led to the surge in wasp numbers, and a typical nest had about 10,000 workers. ‘‘We had a mild winter followed by a mild summer,’’ he said. ‘‘In mild winters, not all the hives die off from the previous year.’’ Mr Honan said it was too late to eradicate European wasps, which were first detected in Victoria in 1977. ‘‘The only way now is biological control,’’ he said. ‘‘If an area of research was to be effective, it would be baits. Baiting is a fine balance, because you’re trying to attract them with meat but the insecticide inside acts as a repellent.’’ Lancefield resident Justin Robinson agreed more research was needed. “It’s only a matter of time before someone cops one on the throat while trying to eat,’’ he said. Cops blitz Easter roads By Matt Crossman Extra police will be out in force from early this week as emergency services prepare for what is typically one of the most dangerous times on Macedon Ranges roads. The highway patrol’s Sergeant Geoff Neil said regular units would join traffic police in targeting drink driving and fatigue this Easter. The warning comes after figures released by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) revealed that one in 10 country drivers regularly drive while drowsy. With many people taking advantage of the chance to go on a short holiday, Sergeant Neil urged motorists to plan ahead. ‘‘At this time of year, a lot of people will be making that long trip,’’ he said. ‘‘Unfortunately, many drivers are not properly prepared. ‘‘One always hopes we get through the holiday period without any serious collisions, but experience tells us it’s unlikely to happen.’’ Sergeant Neil urged drivers to take their time, schedule proper rest breaks and resist the temptation to speed. A TAC report released last week showed drowsiness was a factor in up to 20 per cent of road deaths. Drivers on country roads were at greater risk, given they usually travel at higher speeds over long distances. TAC chief executive Janet Dore urged motorists heading off on Easter road trips to plan breaks and stop for a 15-minute power nap if they noticed signs of drowsiness. ‘‘Put simply, you can’t fight sleep,’’ Ms Dore said. ‘‘Drowsiness is a chemical process, not a choice, and the only way to overcome it is sleep.’’ Ms Dore said ‘driver reviver’ sites staffed by SES volunteers at highway rest stops around the state provided the ideal chance to break up a journey.
Residents, tip wait on VCAT The future of the Bulla tip awaits the outcome of a five-day hearing held before the state tribunal earlier this month. Bulla residents made three separate appeals to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal against Hume council’s decision last April to grant Bulla Tip and Quarry (BTQ) a two-and-a-half-year extension of its planning permit. The permit was granted until December 31, 2016, to allow landfill and rehabilitation works to be carried out. BTQ also appealed against the council’s decision. The quarry operators had originally sought a 10-year extension, after having being granted a 20-year lease in 1993. Residents told the tribunal the tip was adversely affecting their health. Bulla resident Carmel Egan, who attended the week-long hearing, said residents complained of dust, smoke, an acrid stench, litter and ongoing underground fires that had broken through the surface soil “to menace the community for the past two years”. Ms Egan said the tribunal was told the Environment Protection Authority had issued five clean-up orders and pollution abatement notices to the tip since September, 2013. Tribunal chairman Russell Byard reserved his decision. BTQ declined to comment. Hume council did not respond to requests for comment before deadline. Lexi Cottee

Hot tip for Sunbury shoppers By Matt Crossman Shoppers are being encouraged to get out of their cars and take a good look around Sunbury’s laneway arcades as traders deal with sluggish business conditions. Sunbury Business Association (SBA) president Michael Osborne said that while service industries, including real estate and lending, were doing well thanks to low interest rates, retail in the town was ‘‘a massive struggle’’. He said many business owners hoped the opening of major developments such as Bunnings on Vineyard Road would encourage more people to shop locally.
‘‘The real problem is getting a consistent cash flow,’’ Mr Osborne said. ‘‘If the cash flow is inconsistent, as it often is with retail, it can make it really hard to plan.’’ Mr Osborne said Sunbury’s laneway arcades were one of the town’s best-kept secrets. ‘‘We would encourage people to treat shopping as an experience,’’ he said. ‘‘People often go to the major shopping centres because there’s parking and it’s convenient, but there’s some great little shops down those laneways.’’ Hume city sustainability director Kelvin Walsh said there had been significant investment in Sunbury in the past 12 to 18 months.

‘‘This has been most evident along O’Shannassy Street, which has continued its transformation into a premier dining district,’’ Mr Walsh said. ‘‘Overall commercial vacancy rates are low, which is a good indicator that high-quality, long-term businesses are being established.’’ Mr Walsh said streetscape improvements, including a $2 million upgrade of O’Shannassy Street and improvements to the Village Green,
would further encourage people to shop in Sunbury. ‘‘Community events including Sunbury StreetLife, Market on the Green and SunFest had also been instrumental in creating vibrancy and driving increased activity,’’ he said. Mr Osborne encouraged business owners to take part in a series of business networking breakfasts run by SBA in partnership with Sunbury Community Health. The next breakfast will be held at Crossfit Kenko Gym, McDougall Road, on April 16. Mr Osborne said traders should always seek to treat business as part of an ongoing relationship. ‘‘Good business is never just a transaction.’’
Volunteers will hit the streets of Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges on Good Friday, raising funds for the annual Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal. Firefighters, junior firefighters and Scouts will team up to doorknock houses in Gisborne and surrounds, while SES volunteers will take part in a joint emergency services effort in Sunbury. Gisborne CFA organiser Mark Carter says volunteers collected more than $11,000 last year and aim to raise even more in 2015. ‘‘We’re a young community and it’s important people realise that if their kids get really sick, they’ll be taken to the Royal Children’s,’’ Mr Carter says. ‘‘The money we raise buys the equipment that helps so many families.’’

Sunbury SES controller Anthony White says it’s the first time emergency services have come together to raise money for the appeal. ‘‘We often come and work together in the worst of circumstances,” he says. “Good Friday will be a great opportunity to finally catch up with our colleagues on a non-emergency occasion.’’ A fundraising car show will also be held at Sunbury’s Langama Park from 10am-4pm. Kruze4Kids includes a car and bike display, animal farm, pony rides and stalls. Staff at Williamson’s Foodworks in Gisborne and Sunbury will donate their time to raise money from 9am-1pm, having collected $75,000 from shoppers in the past three years.

Knitters and crocheters are being encouraged to pick up their needles and add to the colour of Sunbury’s annual StreetLife festival. Organisers of this year’s showcase of local businesses, to be held on Sunday, November 22, are seeking volunteers to ‘‘yarn bomb’’ trees on O’Shannassy Street. The emerging artform was a feature of the inaugural StreetLife held in 2013 but was not part of last year’s program. Event spokeswoman Sharyn Snook says more than 10 people have already volunteered
and are ready to get started, while the Sunbury Visitor Information Centre is accepting donations of yarn for the project. ‘‘We’re aiming to yarn bomb at least every second tree,’’ Ms Snook says. ‘‘They’ll be using plenty of bright wool … it really adds to the colour and excitement and that’s what a good community street festival is all about.’’ For more details, visit www.sunburystreetlife. com.au.
A new ambulance station in Kyneton is expected to help ease some of the fatigue and morale problems that have plagued the service. The station, next to Kyneton hospital in Caroline Chisholm Drive, includes light-controlled, soundproof bedrooms for paramedics on night shift, a kitchen, meeting spaces and a staff barbecue. Macedon Labor MP Mary-Anne Thomas said last Friday’s official opening was also a chance for Health Minister Jill Hennessy to meet paramedics and discuss the work of a parliamentary committee which is looking into the state’s ambulance crisis. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, an interim report released late last month found paramedics reported considerable fatigue and low morale, and close to 45 per cent of ambulance officers said last year they would not recommend the service as a good place to work. The government has already promised $60 million for initiatives to reduce response times and $40 million to upgrade ambulance stations, equipment and vehicles. Ms Hennessy and Ms Thomas also toured Kyneton District Health’s $7.4 million ambulatory care centre. Help us fight cuts, says council By Lexi Cottee and Matt Crossman Hume council has turned to social media to bolster support for its campaign to reinstate funding for preventative health programs. The council is spruiking the hashtag #anappleaday and #fundprevention in a bid to attract state government attention to its fight to have funding for obesity and disease prevention measures reinstated beyond June 30. The council wants community members to take photos of themselves eating apples and post them on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with the #anappleaday and #fundprevention
hashtags to show their support for the campaign. Hume is one of 12 councils in Victoria at risk of losing programs run by Healthy Together Victoria. Federal funding for the National Partnership Agreement on Preventative Health was cut in the 2014 budget. This agreement had provided funding for Healthy Together Victoria. According to Medicare Local statistics, about one in 11 people in Hume has heart disease, more than 1000 go to hospital each year with a heart attack, 58 per cent are overweight or obese, and 8317 live with diabetes.
Life on the land the lure Romsey’s Tony Farrell and his family are part of the changing face of the Macedon Ranges. The long-time actor, who moved to the area from Melbourne with his wife, Angela, and two children, says the area’s tranquil lifestyle and natural beauty attracted them. The survey found most respondents came from another rural area.
Of those people who came from a city, the overwhelming majority were from Melbourne. More than half the respondents worked in Melbourne. The most common age group of survey respondents was 41-64. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the survey showed ratepayers had a real connection with the area in which they had chosen to live. ‘‘It’s encouraging to see that we attract, and keep, residents with a strong appreciation of the lifestyle, beauty and character of our region,’’ Cr Anderson said. Briefs Learning centre goes to tender
A $3.7 million early-learning centre will be built in Gisborne after Macedon Ranges council agreed to seek a tender for the project last week. The proposed centre, at 71 Robertson Street, will feature an environmentally friendly design, including two kinder rooms, two maternal child and health rooms, a toy library and shared community space. Work is expected to start in June and be completed by 2016.
Cool for cats
A cattery will be built in Redesdale Road, Kyneton, after being approved by Macedon Ranges council last Wednesday. Councillors voted 6-3 to support an alternative motion from Cr Roger Jukes to approve plans for an animal boarding facility and dwelling on 16.57 hectares of farming-zone land. Council officers had recommended that the proposal be rejected, citing the permanent loss of agricultural land.
Owner fined over angry dog
A Lancefield dog owner has been convicted and fined $1400 after a Staffordshire terrier escaped and rushed people on nine occasions. The owner was also ordered to pay impoundment costs of $2013 after facing Kyneton Magistrates Court on March 16. The unregistered dog, seized by Macedon Ranges council on January 15, must be muzzled and kept on a leash at all times when off its property.

A Sunbury driver who was involved in a minor collision at a busy supermarket
will be charged with drink driving after returning a blood-alcohol reading of 0.231, almost five times the legal limit. The woman, 64, had her licence suspended after her car and another vehicle collided at Woolworths in Horne Street about 5pm last Tuesday. No one was injured.
Fire starter to pay CFA
Residents are being reminded to register all burn-offs after an Ashbourne man was put on a good behaviour bond for lighting a large fire on his land in November last year. The man, who faced Kyneton Magistrates Court on March 16, was also ordered to donate $600 to Woodend CFA. The court heard the CFA and police were called after neighbours reported explosions and a plume of black smoke. The man had no fire protection equipment, and some spot fires occurred. The fire restriction period ended in the Macedon Ranges on Monday, but burnoffs must still be registered with the CFA. Permits are not required on land of less than 4000 square metres during April. A sign of our history A memorial sign will be placed in Macedon Street, Sunbury, as part of Hume’s four years of celebration for the centenary of World War I. The council has planned a range of activities until 2018 to pay tribute to the original Anzacs and acknowledge more than a century of Australian military service. As part of the program, a mature tree propagated from a Gallipoli pine will be dedicated to Sunbury RSL and floral gardens of poppies and rosemary will be placed as tributes at the town’s war memorial in Stawell Street. This year’s events in Sunbury include an Anzac Day dawn service and traditional morning service, including a march. An exhibition at George Evans Museum celebrates
the contribution made by Sunbury residents who served in World War I. The Empire Calls, which features photographs, letters, postcards and other items, is open until June 25. The composition of the VCMC will also reflect the major land and water uses in Victoria, including rural, urban, private and public uses. The Victorian Government is committed to ensuring the diversity of our boards represent the diversity of our communities. Women, Indigenous persons, people with a disability, young persons and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. SPORT Burras fly beyond finals fears By Tara Murray When Diggers Rest Bulla lost four early wickets on day three of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade competition, captain-coach Rhys Berry started to think ‘not again’. Last year the Burras lost the grand final to Gisborne by one wicket and, despite having a first innings lead, Berry thought they may have blown their chances again. The Burras resumed at 2-71 with an overall lead of 74 going into the third and final day of the match against East Sunbury. “We were in the box seat going into the day.
We lost 4-24 to be 6-95 and still with plenty of overs remaining,” Berry said. “There were very nervous guys with the top six blokes out. Speaking for myself, the negative thoughts started to arrive and I thought we were going to lose the unloseable game.” Berry promoted himself up the order to try to calm things down in the middle. The decision worked, with Berry and Mark Jackson batting for the rest of the day. “We batted for 60 overs and the more time we spent in the middle, the better. The partnership was 62 not out.” The Burras finished the day and the match at 6-157.

Berry made 23 not out, while Jackson finished unbeaten also, 31 not out. Andrew Knight also scored 31. Experienced Burras bowler Darren Quarrell was named man-of-the-match for his 5-38 off 17 overs, the win being the Burras’ second grand final in three years. The club also won the C-grade premiership in 2012-13 and was B-grade runner-up last year.
“It [2012-13] was my first season in charge and the plan was to get us to McIntyre Cup, which we’ve now done,” Berry said.“The club has never been in the McIntyre Cup since coming into the competition in 1990. “In my 13 years, we’ve always been one of the stronger teams … it’s the fourth time I’ve played in a B-grade grand final, though this is the first time we’ve won.” Berry said he was hopeful the club would be competitive next year in the top grade. “We’re finally there and up with the big boys. Obviously we will have to find a couple of others players to be competitive, but it’s all very exciting,” Berry said.

Injured Hughes makes it four from four When James Hughes said he wanted Sunbury United to bat all day on the third day of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup grand final against Sunbury, he had a secret most people didn’t know. The competition’s leading wicket taker had a grade two tear of his tricep and wouldn’t have been able to bowl if his side had to bowl again. Luckily for him, his batsmen did the job and Hughes and United won their fourth premiership in six years. United resumed on day three at 1-43 having already secured a 56-run first innings lead. Hughes, United’s captain-coach, said his side did exactly what they were asked in securing the win. “We knew we wanted to bat until about 5pm and then the game was likely to be called off,” Hughes said.
“Ryan Billinghurst made 57 and batted tremendously and Dylan Wright made 27 off 118 balls spending plenty of time occupying the crease. “It was a really good batting effort and we have not done that all year. “We pretty much controlled the game and when it looked like the game would be closed down they got a wicket and it continued on for a bit longer, but it was never in doubt.” During a drinks break about 5pm Sunbury’s captain and coach Jason McGann and Jason Elliott decided to end the game. The Sunbury Lions’ biggest development in the Ballarat Football League this season will come from within as they look to capitalise on the club’s growth from last year. With 15 players – several of them under-18s – making their debuts, the Lions still managed to keep their perfect record of making the finals intact by finishing sixth. Lions coach Rick Horwood said another pre-season under the players’ belts would be a good thing. “The improvement has to come from within, from the young guys who got a taste of senior football last year,” Horwood said. “This year they need to look to be more consistent. Our best is really good, but our worst brings us back to the pack. If we can be more consistent we will be big improvers.” Horwood said some of those younger players had been leading the way on the training track. “Nathan Wood has been the standout and spent a lot of time in the gym,” he said. “Josh Guthrie [who tried out for Geelong’s VFL side] has shown a bit and Trent Stead, who played one senior game last year, is another who has taken the next step.” Under-18 players Lachlan Bramble, Josh Muir and Zac Guthrie were also showing encouraging signs, while there were also good signs coming from a couple of players who had interrupted seasons last year. “Greg Hay has had a brilliant pre-season. Last pre-season he had a car accident and missed the first six weeks,” Horwood said. “James Rizk is getting back to some good form and played well in our first practice match.” Horwood says the club will have a new-look forward line. “Jack Sheahan will play all season for us and ‘Kova’ [David Kovacevic] is likely to play forward more with the recruitment of Chris Lynch; it will be a two-pronged attack.” Horwood says Lynch, Xavier Linton and Tom Donoghue have been the standouts of the new recruits. This year’s side will again have a very Sunbury look to it. “Of our top 30 players, 25 of them have come through the Lions’ junior program,” he said. “It’s credit to the club and the group of players who have stuck together despite being offered more money elsewhere.” Tara Murray

This girl’s got the game By Tara Murray Annabel Strahan’s basketball career started when, at the age of three, she began begging her mum to let her have a go. The “begging” took a year, but Strahan has since made rapid progress. At the start, Strahan’s sister and brother played basketball each week and the youngster wanted to join them. Finally, her mum relented. Now, having played in Sunbury with the Gisborne Dragons and at representative level for the town, Strahan has been named a winner of the Victorian Junior Basketball League ‘Girls Got Game’ for week 13. The award is aimed at encouraging women to keep playing basketball and raising the profile of girls and women in the game. Each week three players across the state are nominated for the award, with a public vote to decide the winner. “It was pretty good to have my team [Sunbury’s under-14.1’s] behind me to get votes and I was pretty happy to get this award,” Strahan said. “It was really special. “We have a good team bond. Scott Williams won the Romsey Golf Club’s March medal on Saturday. Most players struggled, although club champion Les Gaunt had some success, shooting one-under par on the back nine. It wasn’t enough for him to beat Williams though, who finished his round with a score of 93-26-67 to win from Sharif Abdel-Syaed. The first of the semi-finals in the Algie Mitchell Shield was played with Rob Rea defeating Peter Scanlon to win through to the final.

Sunbury United is winless after two rounds of the FFV state league 1 west season, being thrashed by North Sunshine Eagles at the weekend. The Eagles were out of the blocks quickly at Langama Park, scoring goals in the 10th and 16th minutes. They put a third on the scoreboard just before half-time to lead 3-0 at the break. United had its best chance of the game in the 51st minute, but the ball smashed into the cross bar. The Eagles added a fourth goal in the 90th minute. Kyneton District drew with RMIT 1-1 in state league 5 west at Barkley Square and Gisborne drew 1-1 with Balmoral.

The opening round of the Bendigo Football Netball League kicks off with all matches being played on Good Friday. Gisborne and Kyneton start the season with the Macedon Ranges derby in both the netball and football. Play starts 2.20pm at Gardiner Reserve, Gisborne.

Brown’s eight is enough to fire Cannons into action Karl Brown provided the catalyst for the Calder Cannons’ tight escape against the Northern Knights on Saturday in the TAC Cup at RAMS Arena in Craigieburn. The Cannons looked to be cruising early on, kicking seven goals in a row from midway through the first quarter until late in the second term. The two teams went goal-for-goal in the third quarter before the Knights turned it
on to level the scores in the fourth. With his eighth goal Brown put the Cannons back in front. It turned out to be the winning goal. Final scores were 12.11 (83) to 11.11 (77). For the Knights, Bailey Jordan kicked three goals while captain Jade Gresham was their best player. Cannons coach Andrew Johnston said his side allowed the Knights back into the game.
“Our message at the start of the day was to not give them time and space and our blokes seemed to drop off that,” he said. “There’s a lot of positives [but] a long way to go for these blokes to learn how to play well for four quarters.” Cannon Thomas Burnside left the field on a stretcher with a neck injury in the first quarter, while Hisham Kerbatieh only played three minutes of the second half after

Jets turn up the heat for first win
Knights of Sherwood shine in finals The Sherwood Knights were too good for the Kismet Sharks, including Caleb (pictured), in Sunbury Softball Association’s grand finals. The under-12 grand final, won by the Knights 7-2, was one of four held on Saturday. In under-16s, the Knights won 13-5 against the Panthers, while in the women’s group the Panthers won 13-5 against Wildcats. The Sunbury Jets division one men’s side held off Mildura to score its first win of the Big V season on Saturday night. The travelling Jets overcame having 10 less field goal attempts, 15 less rebounds and losing the assist account, to still defeat the Heat 81-77. The Jets got off to a flier in the first quarter, hitting three of six three-pointers to lead by eight points at the first break, 25-17. The Heat reduced the margin to two points in the second quarter as the teams went goal-for-goal. The second half saw the Heat lift attempts at goal, but the Jets ability to hit shots from beyond the arc put their lead at five points at the last break. Going into the last break, the Jets had hit 10 of 20 three-point attempts. In the final quarter, the Heat again put up more shots but the Jets hit the same amount of shots from the field to hold on to a four-point win. Sammy Gazzo top-scored with 24 points, while young gun Harrison Salm scored 17 in his second senior game. The Jets women’s side lost to the Heat 87-55. The Heat dominated the game from the first whistle, winning each quarter by six points or more. Operations manager Toby Boyle says the problem, a statewide issue, is something the RDFL wants to address. Several clubs are short of numbers for under-18.5 sides, with other clubs struggling at the under-16 level. “It’s not ideal,” Boyle said. “We’re still four weeks from the start of the season and a lot of kids have been playing cricket. “Lancefield is the only club that has told us they won’t have an under-18.5 side, but three or four other clubs have spoken to me about a shortage of numbers, though they’re still looking at fielding a side.” Boyle says there has also been a drop in the
number of under-16 teams, with clubs filling one full team first then looking to fill a second XI. “We would like every club to have at least one side and the aim is for every club to have two teams,” Boyle said. “At the moment, only Gisborne Rookies and Rupertswood will field two teams.” Boyle says there needs to be a change in approach at the junior level to try to get players to stay in the game. “We’ve identified that players need to be developed better at a younger level. “They need to play all positions and develop in all areas, not just focus on five or six players to win games through them. “If they’re pigeonholed in one position, they aren’t going to enjoy it and [will] want to walk away. to get junior and under-18.5 teams up and running, but with little success. Tigers president Tony McKay said they had done everything they could to get an under-18.5 team this season after not being able to field one last year. “We thought we had it off the ground and had the players across the line, but it hasn’t happened. “We notified the league two weeks ago we wouldn’t have an under-18.5 side as we didn’t want the embarrassment of pulling out two weeks in. “We tried everything. We spoke with the league, schools and other clubs.”
The Tigers are hopeful of having an under-16 side. Rams coach Gavin Sporale says his club will again be without junior sides. “We tried everything and we couldn’t get the numbers needed. We flirted with having under-16s and under-12s but couldn’t get it over the line. “We put so much time into it, it’s disappointing to see it fail,” he said. Sporale says his club is one of the three-four clubs struggling for numbers at the under-18.5 level. “We’ve put in a couple of exemption requests and if they go through we should have 19-20 players.” Romsey is another club struggling for numbers for its under-18.5. Redbacks president Wayne Milburn says he’s confident his club will get the required players in coming weeks.
