Town’s tears for Noah Kyneton residents have been urged to continue to support the family of a 22-month-old boy who was found dead in the back seat of a utility in Acacia Drive about 3pm on Thursday. Community leaders have also asked people not to engage in, or entertain, unhelpful talk on social media. Police had still been unable to speak to the distressed mother of the boy, named Noah, when Star Weekly went to print. Macedon Ranges mayor and Woodend GP Jennifer Anderson said people should refrain from public discussion. ‘‘This is a tragedy and we need to respect people’s privacy,’’ she said. Kyneton Baptist Church minister Simon Burnett encouraged people who knew the family to help where they could. ‘‘This is an important time for the community to come around a hurting family and provide them with love and support, while at the same time giving them the space they need,’’ he said. The house where the vehicle was parked, in a relatively new estate behind Kyneton hospital, is believed to be a privately run family day-care centre. Paramedics, who were called at 2.57pm on Thursday, had to smash a window of the vehicle to gain entry. They performed CPR on Noah for several minutes but were unable to revive him. The temperature in Kyneton reached 31.6 degrees at 3pm on Thursday. Police said it was understood the vehicle had been parked outside the house for only a short time.

Many neighbours stood in their driveways and wept as news spread. Emergency services personnel were also visibly shaken. By Friday morning, flowers had been left on top of the mailbox at the house where the utility had been parked. Around town, feelings about the tragedy were close to the surface. The overwhelming majority of people expressed profound sympathy for those affected. Several parents also admitted to having left their own children in a parked car for short periods.

Macedon Ranges police’s Inspector Ryan Irwin said detectives were in the early stages of investigating what happened. He said people should avoid jumping to conclusions. ‘‘Regardless of the circumstances, this is an absolute tragedy for the family, for other people living in the area and for the emergency services who attended.” Police said Noah lived in the Kyneton area with his parents and a sibling. His father took to Twitter late last week to express the family’s devastation. Andrew Krespanis urged parents to love their children. ‘‘I’ll always know I cherished every day. Every laugh, every adventure, every cuddle,’’ he said. ‘‘Hug your children. Hug them and never let them go.’’

Facebook reins in horse lovers Macedon Ranges horse enthusiasts have been quick to jump on a new social media page connecting them with a mix of news, information and equine tips. Macedon Ranges council and volunteers from the Macedon Ranges Equine Industry (REIN) collaborated on the Facebook page, which has attracted almost 250 likes since its launch last month. REIN volunteer and page administrator Tracey Robertson (pictured) works at Eliza Park International at Kerrie and says it’s a great way to keep riders, competitors and trainers informed. Ms Robertson says the page will be extremely valuable in times of disease outbreaks, bushfires and flooding, and it has already helped reunite a horse on the loose with its owner. Ageing court too cramped for modern justice A major upgrade of Kyneton Magistrates Court is needed urgently as people involved in family violence cases have no safe place in which to speak to their lawyers, according to the Macedon Ranges’ top cop, As reported by Star Weekly last year, the court has no venue for private conversations, with women seeking intervention orders sometimes forced to share a waiting area with the person they are seeking an order against. Lawyers have also resorted to meeting clients in a nearby park so they can take down sensitive information.

Inspector Ryan Irwin said the set-up was unsuitable and called for the courthouse to be ‘‘brought into the 21st century’’. ‘‘The courthouse is very historic, but it was obviously built in an era when these types of things weren’t dealt with as often,’’ he said. The heritage-listed court was built in 1857 and renovated in 1897. Two CCTV cameras were installed recently, but Loddon Campaspe Community Legal Centre lawyer Bonnie Renou said security was still inadequate and people had been threatened because of the proximity to defendants.

‘‘We had an incident towards the end of last year when a respondent directly threatened a client and myself, so I had to take her to the police station [next door],” Ms Renou said. In another instance, a lawyer had to take a woman to her car in order to get away. Ms Renou said in about 90 per cent of cases,

at the court, community and Legal Aid lawyers were meeting clients for the first time. The state government has announced a safety audit of courthouses and a royal commission into family violence. Macedon Labor MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the situation in Kyneton was raised with her many times in last year’s election campaign. Call to fix ‘deathtrap’ Motorists have called for something to be done about a ‘‘disgusting’’ intersection that regularly causes traffic chaos in the centre of Sunbury. They want traffic lights to replace the roundabout at the intersection of Gap Road and Horne Street, which was last year ranked among the state’s worst traffic hotspots by an RACV survey. Sunbury businesswoman Siobhan McGrory, who has owned nearby bedding store Forty Winks for 25 years, said she could not believe traffic lights had been put in for new

developments on Vineyard Road, but there had been no action at the most-congested roundabout in Sunbury. ‘‘It’s disgusting,’’ Ms McGrory said. ‘‘They leave it with nothing. ‘‘The pedestrian crossing is a deathtrap … I certainly would not use it for fear of being run over.’’ Ms McGrory said the intersection was a traffic nightmare. Finn told State Parliament that urgent action was needed. ‘‘Sunbury is no longer a country town,’’ he said. ‘‘The number of vehicles on Sunbury roads … has increased enormously over the past 10 to 15 years. ‘‘It’s a miracle that so many vehicles get through without collecting another car.’’ The Sunbury Residents Association has previously called for a third railway crossing on Gap Road, towards Vineyard Road, to ease congestion. Community-minded Sunbury residents are being urged to join the committee behind the town’s longest-running festival as fears arise about its long-term future. SunFest spokesman Jarrod Bell said several committee members had indicated that next month’s 39th annual event will be their last, and more people are needed to help run the festival. ‘‘If we don’t get more people on the committee, there won’t be a festival next year,’’ Mr Bell said. ‘‘We’ve got people who have been doing a lot of things, many of them for a long time. ‘‘If people want the biggest and best event possible, like we’ve had for the past 40-odd years, they really need to put their hands up now.’’ The festival attracts about 30,000 people every year and is organised by a core group of nine people, responsible for securing sponsorship and planning the festival. A friends group of 10-15 people also provides support, while Scout groups and other volunteers help on the day. Mr Bell said outgoing committee members were happy to act as mentors for people interested in taking on roles. ‘‘They can help out this year and then jump on the committee next year if they decide it’s for them.’’ Mr Bell said this year’s SunFest, at the Village Green on March 14 and 15, will include Sunbury’s only public fireworks, live entertainment, a street parade and market, and a charity walk/run. And the beneficiaries will be the SES, 1st Sunbury Scouts and the Leukaemia Foundation. Memorabilia from Sunbury’s rock festivals of the 1970s will also be displayed. Sun lights up a new era A new era dawned early for Woodend Primary School when the final stage of a 140-panel solar energy project was switched on during a special assembly last Monday. People power was a major factor in the early completion of the $72,000 Here Comes the Sun initiative, with Woodend Primary taking just 14 months to raise enough money for the second-largest school installation in Victoria. The project had been expected to take three years to finish. Principal Andy Kozak said the school could now generate up to 35kW of clean power, enough for most of its daytime energy needs. ‘‘The savings on power bills will return the school’s investment in under two years and will be used to enhance the school’s facilities and resources for decades to come,’’ he said. Most of the money raised came from local

projects and community sponsors, including Woodend Rotary Club, Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group and the Trentham and Districts Community Bank. The school tipped in $18,000, while Sustainability Victoria provided a $16,000 grant. Mr Kozak says the school is aiming to achieve negligible power bills and zero net greenhouse emissions by tackling inefficiencies. ‘‘We’ll start by replacing inefficient lights and heaters and we’ll achieve our goal with ongoing community support,’’ he said. Eagles’ Rock landing a bonanza By Matt Crossman Macedon Ranges accommodation providers, retailers, cafes, pubs and wineries are set to finally reap the benefits of what should have been a big season of major events at Hanging Rock. Saturday’s Eagles concert is expected to draw close to 18,000 people to the Rock for the legendary American group’s big gig, pumping about $4 million into the local economy. It’s the first concert at the venue since the Rolling Stones cancelled, for a second time, last November.

This weekend’s concert, which includes support act Kasey Chambers, will be followed by the return of Rod Stewart on March 28. Council figures show two Hanging Rock concerts by Bruce Springsteen in March 2013 generated $9.7 million for the region. The event’s official wine supplier, Hanging Rock Winery, will start deliveries to the venue this week. General manager of sales and marketing, Ruth Ellis, said while the winery took a hit due to last year’s cancelled dates, the upcoming concerts would be a major boost. ‘‘We will be providing an awful lot of wine. It’s a big part of our February budget, that’s

for sure,’’ Ms Ellis said. The winery was set to deliver many pallets of wine to the Rock, much of it specially bottled, when the Rolling Stones cancelled. But, even then, there was a silver lining for the winery’s cellar door. ‘‘The weekend of the cancelled concert, that was probably the biggest we’ve had,’’ Ms Ellis said.

Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson said the Eagles concert would be the first to use new lighting installed to boost safety and improve the experience of concert-goers. ‘‘These events always create such a buzz in our region,’’ Cr Anderson said. ‘‘We look forward to welcoming not just the Eagles and Rod Stewart but the many thousands of visitors from Melbourne, Victoria, interstate and even overseas.’’ Cr Anderson warned road closures would be in place around the venue and advised concert-goers to check before driving in. A limited number of tickets to the Eagles concert were still available last Friday.

Houses to occupy camp site By Matt Crossman More than 50 hectares of vacant land that was once the site of annual military camps by the Rupertswood Battery will be turned into a major Sunbury housing development. Australand was announced last week as the preferred developer of the Sunbury Fields site after a deal with the land’s owner, Hume council.

It’s expected more than 1000 residents will call the estate home by the time development is completed in 2018, when it will include almost 400 houses and a two-hectare town centre. Work is expected to start in April. Hume mayor Adem Atmaca said the development of the land, the site of Sunbury’s racecourse in the early 1900s, was a boon for the town. ‘‘Hume City Council has undertaken

significant public consultation in relation to the Racecourse Road site to ensure the development is sensitive to the local community and enhances Sunbury’s future,’’ he said. Australand state general manager Anthony Boyd said plans approved by the council respected the site’s existing character. Native vegetation would be enhanced, providing habitat for wildlife, including kangaroos. ‘‘Around 30 per cent of the development is

dedicated to open space, offering a range of natural settings,’’ he said. Australand will complete an extension of Elizabeth Drive, connecting it with Racecourse Road. Louise Attard, who led a group of objectors called Residents Against Racecourse, said it was a shame that the site, which had long been set aside for public recreational use, would become a housing estate.

Safer, easy on the eye Disruptions caused by streetscape works in Brantome and Hamilton streets, Gisborne, will be well worth it, according to traders and Macedon Ranges council. Bluestone seating, speed humps and environmentally-friendly tree pits are being installed as part of a $400,000 revitalisation funded by the council and state government. Footpaths are also being reconstructed and underground drainage improved. Work is expected to be completed by late March. South ward’s Cr Russell Mowatt said the project would improve pedestrian safety and make Gisborne a nicer place to live and shop. Gisborne Real Estate director Janis Paul, whose shop fronts Brantome Street, said while the works had been inconvenient, there would be significant long-term benefits. ‘‘It was a safety issue. There’s no question those bricks were very uneven.” Matt Crossman

Macedon Ranges crime investigation unit officers believe they have made a significant dent in the local cannabis trade after seizing more than 700 plants in neighbouring Mount Alexander shire last week. Senior Constable Robert Curran said police found an elaborate hydroponic set-up in a shed at a property in Harmony Way, Harcourt, following a tip-off from the public. No charges have been laid. Rats set car alight

CFA volunteers attending a car fire in High Street, Lancefield, on Thursday morning discovered the blaze had an unusual cause. After putting out the fire, they found that rats had made a nest in the car’s engine bay. They said the rats had dragged a tea towel into the engine, sparking the blaze. A spokesman said the incident highlighted the need to regularly check car engines.

Church reaches out to gays A Woodend parish hopes a new program designed to promote the church as a safe space for gay and lesbian people will help save lives. St Mary’s Anglican Church will launch its Gay and Pray initiative with a film night this Saturday. The screening of the Sigourney Weaver movie Prayers for Bobby, about a Christian mother’s journey after the suicide of her gay son, will be followed by a ‘reach out’ service on Sunday. St Mary’s parish councillor and ordination candidate Neil Thomas said the program, supported by Cobaw Community Health and Macedon Ranges council’s Live4Live mental health initiative, was the first of its kind in the area. ‘‘The Anglican church has always been pretty understanding, but it’s certainly a huge step for some to stand up and say we won’t put up with any homophobia,’’ Mr Thomas said. ‘‘We want to provide an avenue for people going through gender identity issues or who are being bullied to come and receive support. We’re seeking to provide a safe place so they can talk things through.’’ He said such programs were vitally important, especially in light of the Macedon Ranges’ higher-than-average suicide rate. ‘‘We know this includes a lot of people going through these issues,’’ he said. Cobaw acting chief executive Margaret

McDonald said there was still a significant gap for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex adults and parents in local communities. ‘‘This is a great initiative the Anglican church in Woodend is undertaking,’’ she said. Mr Thomas said there had been no resistance from parishioners about the program, which has been two years in the making.

Youth club grows up A youth club that aims to help young people by providing employment and promoting personal and professional development is about to expand into Sunbury. The Field Trip, which recently started a group in Lancefield, will launch at Sunbury on April 19. Described by founder Paul Kooperman as a dream factory that provides paid employment for older kids, the program gives young people the chance to mentor other youngsters and plan community activities and events. Members aged 17-21 are employed to run a weekly program for members aged 10-16.

Jordan Casey has been appointed director of the Sunbury group, which will meet every Sunday. The Sunbury resident, who has been volunteering for community groups for many years, says joining The Field Trip was an easy choice. ‘‘I really want to get into youth work and this will give me great insight into that.’’ Heidi Lens will be the group’s designer, responsible for the content of weekly activities. Having sold everything from basic blackand-white televisions through to internetconnected, high-definition plasmas and LCDs, a Sunbury retailer will shut up shop after 52 years. McKinnon’s Electrical has been part of the fabric of the town since Colin McKinnon opened the original store in Evans Street in October, 1962. The business later moved to a larger store on Horne Street before relocating to the current, purpose-built shop, also on Horne Street, about 20 years ago. Colin’s son Peter, who has run the business with brother Jeff for two decades, says the store will close in mid-March. The family has sold the site to a developer

who plans a retail development, including a major liquor store. Peter says there are customers who have been coming to the store for up to 40 years. ‘‘The town and our business have both changed a lot,’’ he says. ‘‘Microwaves were huge when they came in, as were flat-screen TVs and the changeover to digital.’’ Some of the store’s staff will retire, while others will move on to other retailers, including The Good Guys, which will open a Sunbury outlet later next month. Peter McKinnon says the family has appreciated the support and well-wishes of customers. ‘‘It’s been fantastic. We’re going out on a good note.’’ Matt Crossman

Nature has walls aglow Organisers of next month’s Woodend Lions Art Show are hoping that a landscape painting by Gisborne artist Helen Cottle (pictured) will add to the lustre of the annual exhibition. Cottle’s work, Autumn Glow Glow, will be raffled during this year’s show at Woodend’s St Ambrose Hall. All profits from the Labour Day long weekend event go to local projects. Cottle says the painting, inspired by the landscape along Romsey-Woodend Road, is a great example of nature’s simple beauty, which can sometimes be taken for granted. Entries for the March 7-9 show closed last week. More than $3500 in prizemoney is up for grabs, including $1500 for ‘best in show’. Organisers say the event, which was cancelled last year due to a lack of entries, has been

revitalised by the involvement of the Macedon Ranges Art Trail, a collective of 40 local artists and galleries. Art trail spokeswoman Nadine Hartnett says a steady stream of entries from the Macedon Ranges, Sunbury and Hepburn areas has flowed in across all mediums. ‘‘Our group had been toying with the idea of having some sort of large exhibition, so partnering with the Lions club was a no-brainer,’’ Ms Hartnett says. New initiatives include separate categories for 3D art and photography. ‘‘We see great potential for a large art show here,’’ Ms Hartnett says. SPORT Hawks turn to old faces as new coach rebuilds New Woodend-Hesket coach Ross Sleight was surprised at the reaction he got when he arrived at the club last year. Sleight, a Sunbury Lions premiership player who played with Essendon Doutta Stars in the Essendon District Football League last year, took over the role when Glenn Hopkins decided to step down. “The boys have been pretty welcoming and I already knew a lot of them,” Sleight said. “The group’s enthusiasm is good and I didn’t think I’d walk into that. The attitude has been fantastic. “I’m expecting a challenge, which is why I took on the role.”

One of Sleight’s first tasks was to get some bigger bodies to the club and he turned to some former Hawks in the process. “We’ve not won many games and I thought if I could get a couple of players back we could slowly rebuild,” he said. “We have 13 or 14 former players coming back to the club and four or five who haven’t been here before. “The youngest who has come in is 21 and the oldest is 30, so there are a lot of senior bodies. “There are a few from Sunbury’s winning years and that experience was something I thought was missing.”

Sleight said the existing list understood the need to bring in some experienced players. “I was dubious about how they’d take it, but for the club to go forward we need experienced players,” he said. “We’ve had maybe four players who have left for other clubs. “A lot of younger players are from Woodend and they just want to succeed.” He said the pre-season had gone to plan and the club was handling the challenge of not having its home ground at Gilbert Gordon Oval available because of resurfacing. “We’ve been back in training for almost three

A draw between Woodend and Sunbury means Sunbury and Bacchus Marsh are now in the mix for fourth spot, as is Gisborne. A rain-interrupted day one the previous weekend ruined Sunbury and Woodend’s chance of getting a result at Woodend Racecourse Oval. Resuming at 4-112, Woodend continued on to make 8-282, Josh Eastley top-scoring with 85. Woodend got five quick wickets when Sunbury replied but the determined visitors held on to reach 5-69 by stumps. Lancefield entered the final round nine points clear of Romsey after both lost in the second-last round. Lancefield lost 15 (106) - 3 (77) to Kyneton Golf on Saturday but the three points ensured it would play finals after Romsey lost 14 (101) - 4 (79) to Kyneton. Lancefield’s Gordon Charles said any of the four finals teams, Kyneton Golf, Woodend, Kyneton and itself, could win the title. Lancefield will play Kyneton while Kyneton Golf will face Woodend in the first round of the finals. “It’s been close all year and finishing fourth you have an equal chance with the other teams if you play well,” he said. “Finals is a different story and it doesn’t matter how many rinks you win, it’s all about the number of shots you score.” Charles said that while last year’s premiership win would help come finals, the other teams were also full of experience. “Kyneton and Kyneton Golf have won premierships in the past few years and Woodend has won the title a few times,” he said. “It’s a very good competition.” Tara Murray

Come along for the ride By Tara Murray It may be one of the biggest BMX clubs in Victoria but Sunbury BMX club is a little-known gem in its home town. The club, located behind the aquatic centre, has 120 members ranging in age from two to 60. They hosted a come-and-try day on Saturday and will hold a second one on March 14. “It is the second biggest club in Victoria behind Knox,” the club’s Carolyn Todd said. “We run races in Sunbury on the first and third Saturdays of the month and normally have between 50 and 80 people turn up. “We compete in open Victorian events and interstate events but a lot of people don’t know about us.” Todd said the club made sure that it wasn’t expensive to join, despite all the equipment needed. “They don’t need a race bike to start with,” she said. “We have a number of bikes and helmets at the club to help those starting out. “It has become really popular since the Olympics and more people have wanted to keep involved and the whole family can be. “It’s quite accessible. You can start in the sport without much money and there are plenty of secondhand bikes around for those who fall in love with it.” Todd said the second come-and-try day would be after the SunFest festival. “We’re part of the parade and then people can come down to the club afterwards and see what we are about,” she said. Ambrose day at Romsey Golf Club was full of birdies, as most teams came in under the par of 72. Dave Richardson, Peter Scanlon, Scott Williams and Keith Hocking won with 72 (13.4) 58.6 to beat Les Gaunt, Steve Poulton and Mick Sadler on 70 (11.3) 58.7 by just 0.1. Anthony Lakey, Sharif Abdel-Sayed, Mal Mottram and Michael McCarton were third on 69 (9.5) 59.5.

Cricket

Lancefield suffered its second loss of the season in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s C-grade competition. In a top-of-the-table clash with Gisborne, Lancefield’s batsmen failed with the bat for one of the few times this season, making just 95. Robert Moore top-scored with 24. It wasn’t an easy chase for Gisborne who was 7-80 before being all out for 116. Lancefield finished the match at 2-55 in its second innings. Only an outright loss in the final round against Rupertswood and an outright win by Gisborne over Sunbury would prevent Lancefield finishing on top of the ladder.

Baseball

The Wildcats won a 12-11 thriller against the Knights in the Sunbury Baseball Association’s women’s competition, while Jackson Panthers beat the Pink Panthers 8-3. In the men’s competition, the Knights beat the Goonawarriors 20-2 and the Panthers won 7-0 over the Sharks. The Knights beat the Panthers 16-5 in the under-16’s.

Jets call in American forward By Tara Murray The Sunbury Jets have signed their first ever female import ahead of the Big V division-one basketball season. Kelsey Sigl, an 183-centimetre American forward, will join the Jets in the next few weeks ahead of the March 14 season start. Sigl has played in France and Chile in the past two years. While playing in Chile, she averaged 25 points and nine rebounds a game. Sigl said she was excited about joining the Jets. “I couldn’t be more thrilled about this upcoming experience,” she said. “I have heard nothing but positive things about Australia. “I am looking forward to experiencing another culture, meeting new people and winning plenty of basketball games. “My goals for the season include having a winning record, making it to the playoffs and giving the team the best chance to contend for a league championship.

“So far Mick [Michael Thomas], the club, and my teammates have been nothing but accommodating and welcoming.” Jets coach Michael Thomas said he was excited to have Sigl onboard. “It’s really good for the club,” he said. “We looked for someone who can help mentor the young girls. “Kelsey will help Andrew [Summerville, operations manager] with clinics and will also be one of the coaches at the association’s state performance program. “Not only is she a great basketballer who is focussed on team success, Kelsey will also work closely with our junior girls and help them see first hand what women can achieve in sport. “She’s a perfect fit for the club and she has always wanted to come to Australia.” Sigl, who played for Colorado Mesa University, will be part of a new-look Jets that finished on the bottom of the division 1 ladder last season. A proposal from Sunbury to the league saw the Jets avoid relegation and Thomas says

“results this season will speak louder than words”. Only four players from last season’s team will be part of the senior women’s team. “Last season, we only had six senior players and the rest were youth girls,” Thomas said. “We spoke to them [the league] and said we would like the youth girls to play in that competition and let them develop and they are happy with that. They [the girls] are super fit.” Among the losses is Emmie O’Nial, a nominee for the league MVP who has moved across to fellow division 1 side Whittlesea Pacers, and Katrina Vogezelang. “We’ve got four other girls coming in who have plenty of experience,” Thomas said. They include Fairen Williams, who is coming across from Keilor, Raihania Ratana, who has been playing in Ipswich QBL, Leanne Urbon, a former Geelong player who is returning after a short break, and Genevieve McCorkell, who is coming from Hume City Broncos. The Jets open their season at home on March 14 at 8pm against the Keilor Thunder.

Rupo works hard to avoid ‘lazy mode’ Sometimes sitting on top of the ladder and knowing that’s where you’ll finish will cause complacency. But not with Rupertswood. After securing top spot in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition weeks ago, all the attention has been on which teams will fill the other three finals places. Meanwhile, Rupertswood has been going along quietly notching up the wins. “There was a question of whether the guys would go into lazy mode,” club president Peter Kavanagh said. “But we train hard and the boys are driven towards that first final. There is no complacency.” Not that Rupertswood has had things all its own way. “Some close results have gone in our favour and that holding up under pressure is a positive,” Kavanagh said. “The way we’ve finished off innings has been good and, hopefully, we’re in form at the right time of year.” The key to Rupertswood’s season has been the spread of performances, which is now set to create headaches at the selection table come finals. “We’re not relying on one or two; different players have stood up when we have needed it,” Kavanagh said. “No position is guaranteed. The guys in the ‘twos’ are pushing themselves through and the ‘threes’ are pushing into the ‘twos’. If you have a couple of bad weeks you can go down [to a lower grade].” The club had its Pink Stumps day on Saturday to raise money for the McGrath Foundation, and that followed the recent 10-year celebrations of the club’s last McIntyre Cup premiership. On the field, Rupertswood easily accounted for Ashfield. After making 9-286 on day one, Rupertswood skittled Ashfield for 103, Logan Gray taking four wickets. Meanwhile, the fight for the other finals spots is still on. East Sunbury and Diggers Rest, which play each other this week, are both on 48 points, while St Anthonys currently sits in fourth place on 45 points after its first win since the Christmas break. On Saturday, East Sunbury defeated Bacchus Marsh, and Diggers Rest Bulla was too good for Sunbury United. Macedon is fifth, on 39 points, after its loss to St Anthonys and needs results to go its way if it’s to make the finals. Test veteran to coach Sunbury Lions Australian men’s netball representative Adam Boldiston will coach Sunbury Lions A-grade team in the coming Ballarat Netball League season. Boldiston, who has played 41 Tests, takes over from Kim Bailey. Lions president Jack Ogilvie said the club was thrilled to have someone with so much netball experience. Boldiston is an assistant coach with Monash University Storm in the Victorian Netball League. As well as coaching he has been part of many successful men’s and mixed state teams and the men’s national team. “I think we’re lucky to get Adam,” Ogilvie said. “He’s highly credentialled and I think he’ll do a sensational job with the girls. “He has spoken to a couple of players about possibly coming to the club as well. “We’ve lost [goalshooter] Sophie Gunn and need a couple more players to strengthen the structures we have.” A-grade reserve premiership coach Rebecca Anstey will be back on board to help the side defend its title and will also coach the B-grade team. Anstey, captain of the A-grade side in its premiership and runner-up performances in the past two years, will have a busy start to the season as she’s due to have her first child. A-grade reserve premiership player Suzi Johnson will coach C-grade, while Danah Burrows and Ashleigh Mitchell will coach the under-19s. “Suzi is the perfect fit for the C-grade coaching role,” Ogilvie said. “Danah and Ashleigh haven’t coached before, but they’ll get a lot of support from the other coaches.” The club has also appointed Leanne Burrows communicate the netball side of things to the club’s committee. “I know myself and some of the other guys on the committee don’t understand a lot about netball, so this will help us grow as a club,” Ogilvie said. “Leanne has been involved with the club for a number of years and we’re thrilled to have her covering that side of things.” Tara Murray
