Eagles set to rock the Rock (Jow Mastroianni)

Hoopers make net gains There is no “I” in team, and that sums up the spirit of the Sunbury All Abilities Basketball group, which welcomes every player with open arms. Six teams of young adults make up the group of players (above) who train and take part in friendly matches at the Boardman Stadium every Wednesday night during school terms. The group also runs a program for primary school children at Lakeside Stadium on Fridays. “Everyone takes part, everyone gets goals, and they’ve learnt to become true team members,” says co-ordinator Tammy Giles. She says it’s a great outlet for young adults with physical and/or learning disabilities to meet and have fun. “They love it. Some kids do nothing else, so
this is the highlight of their week.” The teams join in competitive and non-competitive games. Giles says she loves watching the players improve their confidence and skills. “Some of the kids … you would never know they couldn’t play basketball a few years ago.’’ The group is run by volunteers and relies on donations and grants to meet costs. Basketball clubs from around Sunbury recently donated money to help purchase jerseys. New players can join at any time. There’s a $5 fee per game, which helps pay for referees. Legendary ’70s US rock band The Eagles will perform at Hanging Rock in February. The band will perform at the iconic outdoor venue on Saturday, February 28, as part of its “History of the Eagles” Australia/New Zealand tour being organised by Frontier Touring. The concert will follow a Hanging Rock show by the Rolling Stones, who will perform there in November. International superstars Leonard Cohen, Rod Stewart and Bruce Springsteen have also graced the Hanging Rock stage. Concerts at the Rock have proved a boon for businesses in the region. Accommodation providers have reported their venues booked out, with restaurants, shops and cafes totting up a financial bonanza. The legendary Hotel California outfit will perform a career-spanning concert at the Rock. Members Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B Schmit will deliver a three-hour song-fest of classic Eagles hits, along with tunes the band has never previously performed live. The gig will include hits such as Desperado, Take It Easy, New Kid In Town, Lyin’ Eyes and Take It To The Limit. The band, which formed in Los Angeles in 1971, last visited Australia in 2010. The new tour will include shows in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney as well as outdoor concerts in the Hunter Valley and Auckland. Macedon Ranges mayor Roger Jukes said the calibre of the artists who had performed at
Hanging Rock highlighted what a world-class live music venue it had become. “The flow-on benefit for the community and businesses after the two Bruce Springsteen concerts was estimated to be in the vicinity of $9.7 million,” he said. “The Eagles are one of the legendary rock bands … it will be fantastic to get them here to the Rock. “A lot of praise has to be given to Frontier Touring to be able to secure such artists for Hanging Rock.

“They have worked well with us to continue to develop the east paddock as a performance venue.” Cr Jukes said upgrades to amenities in the east paddock, including supplies of electricity and water, would begin later this year. “We will have to be mindful of the concerts to make sure everything’s in place and the concerts are not disrupted,” he said. Planning and Environment Act 1987 Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme Notice of Preparation of Amendment Amendment C89 Macedon Ranges Shire Council has prepared Amendment C89 to the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme. The land affected by the amendment consists of more than 141 parcels located throughout the shire. Georgia jumps for joy A young Sunbury athlete is chasing her dreams one long jump at a time. Georgia Bertrand, who competes in long jump and triple jump, trains almost every day preparing for an array of competitions. The 13-year-old student at Maribyrnong College, Victoria’s only state-funded “sports specialism school”, competed in both events at the recent Australian junior athletics championships in Sydney. She is also a recipient of an Australian government Local Sporting Champions grant, which was presented to her last week by McEwen MP Rob Mitchell. “Georgia is a fine athlete and I’m proud to provide this grant to help her and her family send her to more competitions,” Mr Mitchell said.
Georgia says she enjoys meeting new challenges. “I’ve been dedicated to my training for several years, training almost daily and doing competitions on weekends,” she said. Local Sporting Champions grants provide $500 to young athletes to help with the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment. Applications for the next round of grants are being taken until June 30. By Yasemin Talat Pastor Frank Rasenberger’s love of music has put Sunbury’s Bethany Lutheran Church front and centre of a new event. ‘live@thechapel Sunbury’ was launched in Sunbury at the weekend to showcase Melbourne singers, songwriters and bands. “live@thechapel is not a worship service, it’s basically a gig,” Pastor Rasenberger said. “One of my big loves in life is music. I connect with music, especially contemporary music, and I’ve tried to incorporate it in my work as a pastor.” Pastor Rasenberger is pastor for three churches in Victoria’s north west, incorporating Sunbury, St Albans and Melton. He moved from North of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland where he had previously started live@thechapel events in Gympie. He said the Bethany Lutheran Church had the perfect ambiance for the music event and was the ideal location to host the intimate gigs. Pastor Frank said he also had a real passion for Australian singers and songwriters and hoped the event would allow many to showcase their talents. Sunbury’s rich history and community spirit also encouraged him to host the events in town. “I’m a child of the ’70s in many ways and I still remember the Sunbury Music Festival,” he said. “This is sort of in the spirit of the Sunbury Music Festival in that it’s a showcase of good contemporary music.” Pastor Rasenberger hopes to hold the event bi-monthly, with local and Melbourne-based artists invited to take the microphone. A fresh approach to art By Angela Valente Bronwyn Bain says painting takes her into another world and she thinks everyone should take it up because of its therapeutic nature. The Trentham artist, who specialises in fresco painting, will hold an exhibition at The Gallery in Mount Macedon next month. Bain will present fresco works, a painting done in watercolour on wet plaster on a wall or ceiling so that the colours penetrate the plaster and become fixed as it dries. “The beautiful thing about fresco is that it’s almost like a zen process,” she says. “You can’t hurry it, you can’t dry it quickly. You have to wait until it’s ready to be painted and therefore it slows you right down. But the colours are fabulous when you see it finished.” Bain spent five months in Tuscany in 1998 under the direction of Leonetto Tintori, studying fresco techniques. She couldn’t speak Italian, so she learnt by observing the method. “I had a connection with visual art there, and my teacher revived the method of fresco with the conservation and restoration work he did.” The painting style is mostly used in murals because its long life. DIVIDING FENCES In December 2013 the law relating to fencing between neighbouring blocks in Victoria was updated. The new rules are pretty much in line with those found in NSW. In general terms the rules provide that:•
If you want to build a fence on your boundary and intend to pay for it yourself you must still
get the neighbor’s consent. You can build anything on your own property, subject to Council planning consent. •
If you want the neighbor to contribute you must give details in writing specifying type,
materials and cost. Contributions would normally be equal. If you want extra frills then, if your neighbor

agrees, you pay for the extras. •
If you and your neighbor cannot agree, either party (after following the required steps) can
apply to the local Magistrates Court for an order specifying the nature and cost of the fence and the contributions. •
A Court usually has regard to existing fences, types of fences in the neighbourhood and the
particular land usages, but can take into account special requirements of either party in which case contributions towards cost will be apportioned accordingly. In the financial year 2012/13 there were over 6,000 fencing disputes in Victoria, according to figures released by the Victorian Attorney General, more than in any other dispute type. It’s wise to get appropriate legal advice before you rush off to court if you and your neighbor cannot reach agreement, so that all prescribed steps are followed. Ben Thomas travelled to Tasmania as a guest of Cascade.
Cascade works with Hop Products Australia – which has been farming hops in Tasmania for more than 150 years – on its First Harvest beer as a testing ground for new hop varieties. “The Galaxy hop was first used in First Harvest in 2006, when it was an experimental hop,” Unsworth says. “We use all experimental hops in First Harvest. We had a good result with Galaxy and it has gone on to become a major commercial variety. ‘‘We now use Galaxy in a couple of beers. And it’s quite an unusual hop; it’s quite bitter,

It’s fair to say you’d have to be quite the beer boffin to be able to pick the difference between Galaxy and Nelson Sauvin or your Pride of Ringwood in a beer, but, boy, do hops make a difference to a beer’s character. “Different hops bring different characters to beer,” says Cascade’s head brewer, Mike Unsworth. “Some are good at imparting bitterness and others contribute more to the flavour and aroma of a beer. It’s all to do with the chemical components that are contained within the hops, particularly in the glands.” Hops are added at different stages of the brewing process – for bittering at the start and for flavour and aroma towards the end – and often different hops are chosen for the characters they bring. “In hops that are good for bittering, you have what are known as alpha acids, and when they’re boiled up they impart a lot of bitterness,” Unsworth says. “What actually happens is that during the boil [of the brew] the acids change. The heat that’s imparted in the brew makes them more bitter. It’s a process known as isomerisation, where the acids become a more bitter compound.” Bittering hops are added at the start of the boil as heat and time are needed to achieve maximum bitterness. “On the other hand, contained within some hops are more volatile components and they contribute to flavour and aroma,” Unsworth says. “These are things that boil off. Add them too early and you end up blowing most of their characters out the chimney.” While Foster’s may be Australia’s bestknown contribution to the world of beer, our development of a couple of hop varieties – Pride of Ringwood and Galaxy – may be our most important. “The Pride of Ringwood hop that was
