All set for centenary Veterans and their families will gather at Epping and Craigieburn on Sunday to mark Remembrance Day. Epping RSL will mark the centenary of the Armistice – 100 years since the guns fell silent to end World War I – with a service beginning at 10.30am. Epping RSL general manager Narelle Hart said Epping school children would visit the RSL in the lead-up to Remembrance Day to place crosses in honour of family members who went to war. For the first time, the crosses will include photos of their family members. In Craigieburn, a service will be held at the war memorial at Anzac Park from 10.50-11am. From November 7-9 Craigieburn library will host a series of presentations about World War I and Remembrance Day. On November 7, Craigieburn War Memorial and Remembrance committee president Kevin O’Callaghan and vice president John Lynch will discuss researching family military history, before speaking about the history of Remembrance Day on November 9. On November 8, Sher Singh, a former member of the Indian Air Force, will talk about Sikhs who served alongside Australians in Gallipoli and France. All three talks will be at 11.30am-12.30pm. Hospital pledge for north By Laura Michell Community hospitals will be built in Craigieburn and the City of Whittlesea if Labor is re-elected – but not for another four years. Premier Daniel Andrews last week announced that Labor will spend $675 million to build and upgrade community hospitals in growing suburbs and regional towns. The Craigieburn Health Service will be upgraded to a community hospital, providing day surgery, paediatric care, public dental services, women’s health, day chemotherapy, rehabilitation support, family violence and crisis support services, alcohol and drug services, and pharmacy services.
A location is yet to be chosen for the Whittlesea community hospital, however Star Weekly understands the hospital will be built in the north of the municipality in the Yan Yean electorate. The hospital will offer pathology, imaging, pharmacy services, dental services, mental health treatment and community-based palliative care. Planning and design work for both hospitals will begin next year, but construction won’t begin until 2022. Health Minister Jill Hennessy, who visited
DPV Health in the Whittlesea township last week to discuss the announcement with chief executive Neil Cowen and Yan Yean MP Danielle Green, said the community hospitals would reduce the demand on the Northern Hospital’s emergency department. She said the hospitals would improve access to high quality health care in growing suburbs where “communities are crying out for health services”. “Our ambition is that community hospitals will sit in that gap between access to GPs and

access to metropolitan acute health services,” she said. “Community hospitals won’t have things like intensive care units and high acuity care, but they will have after-hours urgent care. “It will be a collection of services from primary health care, specialists, but also those services we know people are travelling long distances for. This is not going to be a small health offering.” Ms Green said she hoped the Whittlesea community hospital would lead to more community-based care for older residents, allowing them to stay in their own homes for longer, and help to address Whittlesea’s high rate of heart disease.

Northern house prices hold firm By Laura Michell Two northern suburbs have emerged as property hotspots, with median house prices bucking a statewide trend to rise by close to 5 per cent over the past three months. Real Estate Institute of Victoria data reveals that Melbourne’s median house price failed to rise between June and September, remaining stable at $834,000. However, in a few suburbs, including Greenvale and Epping, median house prices went against the trend and rose in the September
quarter. According to the REIV data, the media house price in Greenvale rose 6 per cent from $715,000 in June, to $760,000 in September. In Epping, median house prices rose 4.5 per cent from $605,000 to $632,500. Both suburbs have also recorded significant price rises over the past year, with prices rising by 10 per cent in Greenvale and 5.5 per cent in Epping. Barry Plant Gladstone Park director Nick Pugliese said Greenvale was continuing to offer buyers excellent value for money, with the new estates catering to the first home buyer market,

while old Greenvale offered bigger houses on acre to half-acre blocks. He said the suburb’s location was helping to keep the median price “ticking along”. “It is the last frontier in that 20 kilometre [from the CBD] golden circle,” Mr Pugliese said.
A world of difference for Caroline Five years ago Caroline Suhardjono agreed to sign up for taekwondo lessons to keep her children interested in the sport. She never imagined one day she would qualify for the world championships. Ms Suhardjono, from Roxburgh Park, will be heading to Taipei from November 15-18 to compete in the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, alongside her Koryo Taekwondo Centre teammate Damien Hauser. This is the first time she has qualified for the world championships. Ms Suhardjono said she was shocked to have qualified before her children. “At first, I was just fulfilling my promise to my children to try taekwondo when they reached black belt, but then I started to enjoy it,” she said. “I thought the kids would qualify before me because they have more experience.” Ms Suhardjono and Mr Hauser have been training five times a week for the competition. They are hoping the community will help them in their bid to get to Taipei, by helping them raise $6000 to cover some of their expenses. A GoFundMe page has been set up by Ms Suhardjono’s sons. Family hub wins state commitment A community hub will open in Mickleham within three years. The state government will contribute $1.5 million towards the Merrifield West Northern Community Hub, which will be built by Hume council. The hub will have three preschool rooms with capacity for 198 preschool positions, five maternal and child health service consulting rooms and a dedicated waiting area, and multipurpose activity rooms for community activities such as playgroup. The centre will also provide flexible arts and cultural spaces where a range of activities and events can take place to contribute towards creating a strong and inclusive community. Cr Geoff Porter said the council would contribute $11.4 million to the hub. “In 2018, the population of Mickleham is 7244 and by 2035, this will grow to more than 48,000 residents,” he said. “Growing communities like Mickleham need quality facilities to meet the demands of a changing community and to provide opportunities to bring residents together.” Yuroke MP Ros Spence said the new hub would help more families reap the benefits of early childhood education. “As our community is a destination of choice for young families, community infrastructure like this is so important,” she said. Mayor gets down to business By Laura Michell New Whittlesea mayor Lawrie Cox has warned his colleagues to show respect to other councillors and council staff, and to accept the decisions made by the majority of council. Cr Cox was elected uncontested to the council’s top job last Thursday. It’s the second time he has led the council, having previously been president of the then Whittlesea Shire from 1982-83. Cr Tom Joseph was named deputy mayor. Councillors Ricky Kirkham, Norm Kelly and Alahna Desiato were absent. No apologies
or requests for leave of absence were made on their behalf. Cr Mary Lalios was also absent. She has been on leave from the council since April and is currently on WorkCover. Addressing his colleagues in his inaugural speech as mayor, Cr Cox said the council had experienced a change in policy direction in the past 12 months, but stressed the change did not make its decisions “bad” or “wrong”. “The majority make the decisions and just because [some councillors] disagree does not make it wrong,” he said. “Every councillor has a right to be heard, participate and be shown respect.”
Cr Cox also took the opportunity to praise the work of chief executive Simon Overland over the past year. In September the council released a probity auditor’s report which said Cr Lalios made a complaint against Mr Overland, “asserting that she had been bullied by him”. The report dismissed the claim. “It is often misunderstood that we can direct the staff. The practice by some who try to do so must stop,” Cr Cox said. Meanwhile, Hume council elected first-term councillor Carly Moore as mayor, with fellow first-term councillor Naim Kurt named deputy.

Hume councillor Geoff Porter has donated his old car in an effort to help make a difference to young people needing a helping hand. Cr Porter donated his Ford Mondeo to charity Kids Under Cover, enabling the charity to sell the vehicle and use the proceeds to fund its programs. Kids Under Cover builds studio apartments which are then used by young people at risk of homelessness or turning their backs on education. Kids Under Cover chief executive Jo Swift said donations such as Cr Porter’s helped at-risk young people stay connected to their families and education. “Independent evaluations show that for every dollar invested in a Kids Under Cover studio, on average $4.17 is saved by society in the form of reduced health and justice costs, and flow-on economic benefits. Craigieburn Road will be duplicated regardless of who wins the state election, with the Liberal Party pledging to add an extra lane from Mickleham Road to the Hume Freeway. In May, the state government announced the road would be upgraded. Last week, Liberal candidate for Yuroke, Jim Overend, announced the Liberal Party would also commit to duplicating the road.

Works to transform a rail track into the Meadowlink open space corridor in Broadmeadows have reached the half-way mark. The corridor will include 1.3 kilometres of walking and cycling paths and will connect Railway Crescent to Merlynston Creek via Seabrook Reserve. The $2 million project is funded by the state government. The council also plans to remove an old warehouse at 72 Railway Crescent, to open up views onto Meadowlink.

Epping CFA will open the doors of its fire station to the community ahead of the summer fire season. Captain Rob Saitta said the open day was an opportunity for the community to gain an insight into the operations of a volunteer fire station. The brigade attends more than 500 incidents each year, ranging from structure fires to road rescues and grassfires. “We rely on our community to support us in more ways than one. The open day is an opportunity to engage with the community and thank them for their continued support ahead of what could be a challenging fire season,” Mr Saitta said.
The brigade will have the newest addition to its fleet – a medium pumper – on display at the open day, while there will also be rescue and home fire safety demonstrations throughout the day. “The brigade will have all the trucks accessible to members of the community to see the gear and the capability of our appliances. Anyone interested in joining the CFA is welcome to come along for a look and a chat,” Mr Saitta said. The open day is on Sunday, November 18. Poll push on transport projects By Laura Michell A bus service from Lalor station to Craigieburn town centre, the extension of the route 86 tram to South Morang and a rail extension to Wollert are urgently needed to improve liveability in Epping North and Wollert, according to Whittlesea council. The council has released its election wishlist, urging all local candidates to commit to three key public transport projects it believes will make a difference to people living in Epping North and Wollert.
Cr Kris Pavlidis said the three projects would help connect more than 100,000 residents to jobs, education and services and ease congestion. The council wants a 10-minute premium bus service from Lalor to Craigieburn, via Epping North and Wollert, followed by the extension of the train line from Lalor to Wollert within 10 years. It also wants the route 86 tram to be extended from Bundoora to South Morang, despite the state government questioning whether the extension would have enough patronage.
“Our community urgently needs better public transport choices to take cars off congested roads and reduce commute times,” Cr Pavlidis said. “The lack of public transport choices in our growth areas creates more road congestion. This will get even worse as the population in the developing areas of Epping North and Wollert grows by a predicted 62,000 new residents.” Cr Pavlidis said many Epping North residents bought their homes with the promise that a train line would be built in the near future. They were still waiting.
David Sharley was among those Epping North residents to buy a house in the area believing train services would be coming to the suburb soon. “After six years and minimal access to public transport, the stress of my two and a half hours commute became too much and I had to resign from the job I loved,” Dr Sharley said. “We love our home and our neighbourhood, but inadequate public transport in the area means we are isolated from social and employment opportunities that people in other areas enjoy.”
Labor pledges new bus Wollert residents will have better access to public transport if Labor wins the state election on November 24. Thomastown MP Bronwyn Halfpenny and Yan Yean MP Danielle Green last week pledged a new bus service from Mernda station to Craigieburn station, via Wollert, to improve access to train services, work and study. The pledge is part of a $10 million plan to create new bus services in growth suburbs and regions. It is not yet known what route the new service will travel on. Ms Halfpenny said the new route would better connect Wollert families with public transport. “For families living in Wollert, this will make a real difference, making it faster and easier to get where they’re going,” she said. Aurora Community Association’s transport working group member Tony Francis said the new route had potential but warned it was not
a suitable alternative to extending the train line to Wollert. “The proposed bus route from Mernda train station to Craigieburn train station will have a few challenges. Much of the route will involve parts of Bridge Inn Road, Epping Road and Craigieburn Road East which the Whittlesea council is advocating to be duplicated but which the state government has not included in its recent plans,” he said. The announcement follows the state government’s decision to create a new route along Donnybrook Road. The new bus service will connect Mickleham and Kalkallo residents with key destinations around Craigieburn, including the station and shopping precinct. Plenty in store under gorge plan By Laura Michell The Hawkstowe Picnic Area will be upgraded and a mountain bike trail developed under a new master plan for Plenty Gorge Park. The 1350-hectare park’s environmental, historical and cultural values will be protected under the 25-year plan, which will guide the future of the park. Recreational opportunities for residents will be improved, with the 21-kilometre Plenty River trail to be completed as part of the master plan. The trail will provide visitors with walking and cycling paths linking the northern
and southern ends of the park and provide safe access across Gorge Road. The trail will also connect with Mernda and Hawkstowe train stations. Local groups will be called on to help develop a mountain bike trail in the park after a survey found mountain bike riding was the most popular sport in the park. Releasing the master plan late last month, Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said it had been developed in consultation with traditional owners, visitors and residents. She said it would strengthen access and connections throughout

the park and that an $800,000 upgrade of the Hawkstowe Picnic Area would provide easy access to a family-friendly setting that would also be suitable for community events and other leisure activities. The upgrade will include new park main entrances, as well as improved facilities and a playground.
The work will also help ensure the conservation of the Morang Wetlands. “Melbourne’s north is one of Victoria’s fastest growing areas,” Ms D’Ambrosio said. “It’s important that we have green open spaces like Plenty Gorge to escape and unwind. “These upgrades and the master plan will ensure residents and visitors can continue to enjoy Plenty Gorge in the years to come.” The work will be completed over 25 years, with the completion of the Plenty River Trail and new entrance at Hawkstowe listed as short-term priorities.
Garden goes on show One of Melbourne’s most historic gardens will be open to the public this month as part of Open Gardens Victoria. Visitors will be able to explore the 1850s cottage garden at Ziebell’s Farmhouse in Thomastown on the weekend of November 17 and 18 and gain an insight into how the garden would have looked more than 160 years ago. The heritage garden is maintained by the Friends of Westgarthtown, who also care for the farmhouse museum. Visitors to the garden will also be able to buy plants and seeds. Friends of Westgarthtown committee member Gillian Borrack said the garden shows the culture which has endured at the Westgarthtown Pioneer Precinct. “This historic garden provides a rich insight into the lives and interests of Christian and

From Epping to world recognition By Laura Michell Epping’s Christine Stow dreams of being an inspiration to women who are trying to kick-start their own businesses. The Empowered Women director, carer, author and former Whittlesea councillor has spent the past 12 months helping women to access grants and funding to get their businesses off the ground. Her passion for helping other women earned her a nomination at this year’s Stevie Awards for Women in Business in the category of Women of the Year - Business Services. Ms Stow is one of seven finalists in the category and will find out if she wins at an awards dinner in New York on November 16. Other finalists in her category will be travelling to the awards from Mexico, Townsville, Dubai and other parts of the US. Ms Stow said her business allowed her to work alongside other women who had “a dream and a purpose”. “I like to say I help people to find money. Usually they want to help other carers or people with disabilities,” she said. “I want to be an inspiration for other women to stand up and know that anything is possible.” Ms Stow said the idea for Empowered Women came from her experience as a carer for her daughter Imyjen. “When I looked back, I realised I had been 100 per cent successful in receiving grants I applied for. The Whittlesea specialist school, Chancez Cafe at Mill Park … they were all on the back of proposals I had initiated,” she said. “My vision was to find something that worked around [Imyjen’s] care and showed other women what was possible.”

Little idea has big impact Mernda’s new library may be tiny, but the idea behind it definitely isn’t. The Mernda Primary School student representative council has created the Mernda Tiny Library at the Mernda Village Community Activity Centre to encourage pre-school children to develop a love of books. The library was designed by the pupils and built by the Whittlesea Men’s Shed. The tiny library was inspired by the school’s community story time program, which is run by the student representative council once a fortnight in the school library. The story time is part of the Brotherhood of St Laurence’s Mernda 1000 Voices project, in which community members are encouraged to act on their aspirations for the community. Councillor Kris Pavlidis said the library was based on the principles of building community, sparking creativity and inspiring young readers. “What a proud moment to see our youth sharing their love of reading with pre-school children and also helping people connect and belong. “A wonderful example of community development,” she said. Whittlesea looks to the future By Laura Michell Whittlesea’s population is expected to swell by 159,000 people in the next 22 years, requiring 113,000 extra cars on the road, according to the council’s long-term outlook for the municipality. Whittlesea 2040: A Place for All was launched by the council last month, outlining its priorities for the community until 2040. According to the report, Whittlesea will need 62,000 new houses, 52 early years and
educational facilities, 137 new sports facilities and 65 community centres in the next two decades to cope with population growth. The council has listed improvements in road networks and traffic management, expanded public transport networks, more schools, improved and new parks and more affordable community events and activities among its priorities. The document was created using feedback from more than 400 residents. For the past eight months, the council has been asking

them what they love about their local area and their hopes for it by the year 2040. Councillor Kris Pavlidis said Whittlesea 2040 was about ensuring the council was ready for the challenges and opportunities the future would bring.
“Our municipality is one of the fastest growing areas in Australia,� she said. “In fact, we’re the fourth largest and sixth fastest growing local government in Victoria. “It’s important that we plan for the future. We want to make sure our community is a place that the next generation enjoy living, working and playing in. “In 20 years’ time, our society will be a very different place. Who knows what technology will be around or what the world will look like?�
An act of compassion Children at risk of abuse or neglect in Melbourne’s north will be able to access support services closer to home following the opening of an integrated therapy centre in Broadmeadows. Act for Kids recently opened the Riggall Street centre, bringing together psychologists, occupational therapists and speech pathologists to work with children who have experienced or are at risk of child abuse and neglect. Act for Kids chief executive Neil Carrington said the organisation had been running similar centres in Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia for 30 years. Dr Carrington said demand for services to treat and prevent child abuse and neglect was increasing across the country. “In 2017-19, there were 49,315 children abused or neglected in Australia,� he said. “Sadly, this number is frighteningly high. Emotional abuse was the most prevalent type, confirmed in 48 per cent of cases.
“We will work closely with the existing health services to ensure Victorian kids and families get the integrated support they need to overcome their experiences and challenges. “Seeing them get stronger and have happier, healthier futures is our goal.� Broadmeadows MP Frank McGuire, who opened the centre, said the work done by Act for Kids would make a difference to families in Melbourne’s north. “Caring for our children is one of the greatest duties and responsibilities,� he said. MY PLACE South Morang’s Adam Roach recently launched a podcast sharing stories of the people that call the northern suburbs home. He speaks with Laura Michell. What’s your connection to the City of Whittlesea and how long have you lived there? I moved to Mill Park with my parents in 1977 when I was six years old and stayed there until I was 26. Since then I have been living in South Morang. I went to Mill Park Primary and then to Greenwood High School (Bundoora Secondary College). I have been working full-time as an instrumental music teacher for the past 20 years in Eltham and privately at my home studio in South Morang. (Damjan Janevski)
What do you like about where you live? It is affordable and now we have everything here without going into the city or faraway places – car yards, large shopping centres, schools and universities. What, if anything, would you change? The only thing I believe we are missing is a variety of places to go to see live entertainment. We have a few, but it would be good to have more variety rather than going into the city. I know we have a lot of good musicians in the northern suburbs, but unfortunately they have to travel for work when it comes to live music.
You recently started a podcast interviewing people from the northern suburbs. How did that come about? I started publishing a guitar podcast in July, 2017, where I interviewed different guitarists from around the world. But I wanted to do something closer to home, so I started the Melbourne-Northern Suburbs podcast.
Why was it important to you to share the stories of people living in the north?
I thought it would be a great way for people to find out more about them, as well.
I really wanted to help promote local businesses and hear stories of how they first got started. Also to inspire more people in the northern suburbs to follow their dreams and start their own business. Some of my interviews include people that run charity events and festivals …
Where is your favourite local place to spend time? I would have to say Westfield as the kids love the playground while my wife and I can eat then shop.

Girls Night In goes all out to raise money to fight cancer When Sharon Cristallini, who runs Sing it with Sharon singing performance school, helped organise a Girls Night In event to raise funds for cancer research she was expecting the arrival of a big happy crew – and that’s what she got last night (October 22). The women contributed $30 each to be part of it and they shared some delicious food and a glass of bubbly or wine, along with a barrel of laughs. Sharon says the number of local businesses and individuals who stepped up to support the night was incredible.

SPORT Cloke rejoins Jaguars as assistant playing-coach

Cameron Cloke has signed on for a second stint at Jacana in the Essendon District Football League. Cloke helped guide the side to a division 2 premiership in 2017, before playing with Hurstbridge and Barooga last season. He will return to the Jaguars as an assistant playing-coach. His return is a big boost for the Jaguars, who won just one game in division 1 last season. Jaguars’ coach Matthew Huy said had only started talks with Cloke about the coaching position three weeks ago. Huy was an assistant coach at Hurstbridge last season where Cloke played the first part of the season. “It was only two to four weeks ago we went into discussions with him about coming across and through a lot of conversations and catch-ups we came to an agreement,” Huy said. “I was happy to offer him an assistant coaching role and it was something that he
was happy to do.” Huy said having Cloke’s experience and leadership back at the club was vital. But he hoped they would not have to rely on Close as much as they did in 2017 when he kicked 127 goals for the season. “For Jacana to be winning games, we need to have the whole 22 [players] having success on the ground. “His knowledge and expertise is great for Jacana and the players. “Even as an assistant coach, he is wanting to help the club get back to the success it has had over a number of years.” Huy said Cloke has signed a one year contract, but that could be extended another year if everything goes well. Cameron is set to be the only Cloke in Jacana colours this year with his older brother Jason Cloke, who played this year at the club, moving to Queensland. Field of plenty for Bats By Tara Murray Plenty Valley bounced back from a poor performance the previous round, to beat Endeavour Hills in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-east competition. It was a strong display from the Bats, who started well with the bat before completing the task with the ball to seal the win. The Bats made 6-249 from their overs. Bats captain-coach James Dickinson said they were able to put in a more complete batting performance this week. “We put the icing on the cake, as opposed to last week. “We were able to put some runs on the board in the back part of the innings. Daniel Heatley and Simon Bray put the icing on the cake. “Daniel has continued on from the strong form he had last year, while Simon has been opening, but we nestled him down the order. “He got ones and twos down the ground and hit boundaries when he needed to.” Rory Collins top-scored with 71, as he moved to the top of the order having batted down the order in the first two matches. Dickinson said Collins was comfortable in that spot, having opened the batting during his five years in England. Endeavour Hills never looked like getting close, as tight bowling stopped them right from the start. While opening bowlers Simon Black and Luke Andree got one wicket between them, they did a brilliant job restricting the batsmen. “Black, Andree and Mitch Harris squished them early on in the innings and didn’t allow them to get a lot of runs. “Even though they didn’t take wickets, they had them restricted,” Dickinson said. Debutant Ikroop Dhanoa showed no nerves taking 4-20. The 14-year-old came into the side to replace veteran Sean Ayres, who is overseas. “They’re at opposite ends of their careers,” Dickinson said of Dhanoa and Ayres. “The guy is talented and he’s gone through the rep program for Victoria. “He got an opportunity in the twos after a strong pre-season and with Ayres out he came in and got an opportunity.” The win moves the Bats to 2-1 in the early stages of the season. Dickinson said they were still working on getting a more consistent game from week to week. “A few simple mistakes cost us the week before,” he said. “We have six genuine bowlers and with the 18 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 6, 2018
star Travis Cloke, might play some games with Jacana, Huy said there hadn’t been any discussions with Travis. “He’s [Travis] looking at focusing on his coaching career.” Cameron Cloke’s return to the Jaguars is the latest announced by the club. While there’s been several new players join the club, Huy said the signing of former Jaguars junior Kane Murfett was massive. “Kane is only 21 and was a junior at the club,” he said. “He went through Cannons and played footy at Pascoe Vale. It’s a huge pick-up and we’re trying to pursue young blood.” While the Jaguars had been hoping to stay in division 1, Huy said it was a blessing in disguise that they would return to division 2. “We can start rebuilding and get the success and winning feeling back at the club and get the supporters back on board,” he said. Bundoora RSL recorded its second win of the Bowls Victoria Pennant premier division season on Saturday. Facing Lilydale, Bundoora had its best match of the season so far, winning 91 (18)-67 (0). The win moves Bundoora up to sixth. It was a fourth straight loss for Whittlesea, which went down to Melbourne, 89 (17)-63 (1). In division 1, Lalor had a win in section 1.
Northern FL
Bundoora is already looking to next year’s Northern Football League season, with several signings locked in. The Bulls last week announced that Brenton Briffa, Adrian Stefanile, Matty Evans and Liam Gray would be joining the club. Among the first clearances lodged are those of Josh and Nicholas Grabowski, and Joseph Palazzolo, who are leaving the Bulls to the Essendon District Football League. Former coach Ricky Dyson is set to join Banyule.

Hume Tennis and Community Centre will field a team in the Tennis Victorian Premier League competition for the first time. The centre will enter a women’s side, which will take on five teams from across Melbourne in the top competition in the state. Lisa Whybourn, who is a coach at Hume, will captain the side. Plenty Valley and Carlton Brunswick played out a thriller in Women’s Victorian Premier Cricket on Sunday. Both sides had periods of dominance, but in the end they couldn’t be separated and were both bowled out for 138. After two straight losses, the Bats were hoping to return to winners’ list this week. They looked in control with the bat early at 1-75, before the Strikers took 8-15 to bowl them out. Addy Champion took 5-10 to put her team back in the frame. The Bats bowlers responded to have the Strikers in trouble at 3-31 and then 6-52. The Strikers managed to put together a couple of partnerships to get within sight of the win. Enter Kiara Jones. Jones took two wickets in three balls to stop the Strikers in their tracks. Like the Bats, they were bowled out for 138. It was a tough day in the field for the Greenvale Kangaroos, against Prahran, in men’s Victorian Premier Cricket on Saturday. Six teams scored 250 or more across the competition at the weekend, unfortunately for
the Kangaroos they were one of the sides on the end of some big hitting. Only Northcote was on the end of a bigger total. Prahran won the toss and elected to bat. The openers got off to a good start and moved past 50 without any trouble. The Kangaroos finally got a breakthrough when Bernard Kelly stumped opener Jake Hancock, off the bowling of Kyle Adams. The pain didn’t end for the Kangaroos, as James Bilington joined Adam Bull at the crease. Bull continued to anchor one end for Prahran with support from his teammates. Prahran put on 5-366 from 99 overs – Bull was the main man making 151, going out when the score was on 366. For the Kangaroos, the bowling figures don’t paint a pretty picture. Sunam Gautam did a mountain of work, bowling 33 overs which included six maidens. He finished with 3-115. Kyle Adams (1-63) and Humza Ali (1-49) were the other wicket takers.
Demons drop the ball By Tara Murray Tullamarine knows it will have to bat to its potential if it is any chance to take the points against Airport West St Christophers in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Peter Howarth Shield division 1 west competition. Airport West made the most of the good conditions and with some luck going its way, put on 6-317 from its overs. Demons coach Buddhika Mendis said they didn’t help themselves in the field and contributed to such a big total. “We had them on the ropes at 2-6,” he said. “We dropped about eight catches. “Both guys that made centuries, we dropped. We dropped one [Dinesh Cooray] on 13 and he went on to make 115. “We dropped the other one [Jordon Kelly] on 64 and he made 100. It cost us about 170 runs. “We take those catches and the middle order would have been under pressure and we would be talking about a different chase next week.” Shane Siebel took 3-57 for the Demons. Despite a daunting run chase, Mendis said they know the game isn’t over. “If we can bat the whole 80 overs properly we will push them,” he said. “It’s a belter of a wicket. There’s no short cuts and we’re going out there to bat the 80 overs.” The first year coach, who represented the Singapore National team for 10 years, said the team knew it would take time to get going this season. “It’s a totally new team from the last few years,” he said. “We’ve got about seven new players in the first team and it takes a bit of time to settle as a club and culture. “We’re building something long term, not just in the short term.” Mendis said it was about taking it a week at a time and predicted they would get stronger in the next few weeks when their imports arrive. “We’re looking forward to seeing what we can do when we have our full side. “There’s excitement and we think we will push every side … once we get some game practice together, we will be right.” Greenvale Kangaroos have already conceded first innings points against Laverton. The Kangaroos were bowled out for 106 in the 44th over, with Laverton 6-109 at stumps. In the Tony Issacs Shield division 1 north, Westmeadows made 9-293 on the back of 117 from Clayton Campbell. Craigieburn has West Coburg 2-9 in reply to its total of 180. Jacana is in trouble against Melton Centrals in Russell Pollock Shield Division 5. Centrals made 237, before having the Jaguars at 8-56 at stumps.

Craigieburn to expand women’s footy Craigieburn is hoping to expand its female football program for next Essendon District Football League season. The Eagles had an under-13 team, which won a premiership, and senior women’s team this season, but are hoping to fill in the gaps and add under-11, under-15 and under-18 teams next season. Eagles women’s football manager Mandy Frost said it was an exciting time for the club. “We’re really wanting to push female football,” she said. “It’s such a big thing and we’re pushing for as many females interested from the age of 10 upwards. “It’s a great club to play footy for.” The women’s side will start training on November 14 and will train Monday and Wednesday nights up until Christmas. It will train with the men’s side to start the pre-season, before moving into their own work. There will be a meet and greet session on November 12. Dates for the junior girls training are still to be decided. The Eagles are proving a good training ground for female players, with three players selected in higher squads. Breanna Meadows has been named in the Calder Cannons summer training squad, while Laura Luci and Maddison Albrecht have been named in the Essendon Football Club’s under-15 Daniher squad. Perri shines for Kookas Rivergum made it two wins in a row in the North Metro Cricket Association Jika Shield. The Kookas won the toss against Preston Baseballers and elected to bat. It wasn’t the most convincing innings with the Kookas losing frequent wickets, and only Matthew Perri doing any damage. Perri made nearly half his side’s runs as the Kookas finished on 165, bowled out in the last over. Perri made his third 50 in as many matches, finishing with 82. No one else passed 20. The Kookas then bowled the Baseballers out for 142. Jarrod Bannister took 3-31, while Perri and Daniel Young took two wickets apiece. The win has the Kookas sitting fourth after four rounds, after they lost their first two games of the season. Meanwhile, Bundoora Park sits on top after a win against Preston YCW District. Bundoora Park made 4-224 in reply to Preston YCW District’s 223. Thillina Herath top-scored for Bundoora Park with 82. Bundoora Park is one of three sides with a 3-1 record. Other winners were, Holy Trinity and Rosebank. In the D grade Kemp Shield, the Lalor Warriors remain undefeated after beating Rivergum.
