At dawn, we remember The Doreen community is being encouraged to gather at the Laurimar cenotaph at dawn tomorrow for the Doreen RSL sub-branch’s first Anzac Day service. The sub-branch was officially established in August last year, providing veterans with an RSL close to home. President Wes Wridgway said tomorrow’s service would be a special time. “It’s quite exciting for the community and the returning veterans in the area,” he said. “We have really grown in recent months and have over 100 members in just over six months.” The sub-branch has been selling badges at Woolworths stores at Laurimar and Mernda over the past three weeks. “Each and every volunteer is determined to get into the community and not only sell Anzac Appeal badges, but to share their stories and experiences,” Mr Wridgway said. The dawn service will begin at 5.55am. Dawn services will also be held at the Epping RSL and Craigieburn War Memorial at Craigieburn Anzac Park, beginning at 6am. A second service will be held at the Craigieburn War Memorial at 10am, while a service will be held at the Broadmeadows War Memorial at Broadmeadows Town Park at 10.30am. WES WRIDGWAY

$13m station windfall By Laura Michell A bigger and better fire station is on the cards for Craigieburn, with next week’s state budget set to include $13 million to replace the existing station. Emergency Services Minister James Merlino announced the new station on Friday, saying it would be built on a new site. The integrated station will cater for career and volunteer firefighters and will include space for up to five fire trucks and beds for 12 firefighters. At least eight career firefighters will be based at the station.
“The new station will mean the Craigieburn Fire Brigade will have the bigger, better and more modern base they need to protect their growing community,” Mr Merlino said. The fire brigade has been part of the Craigieburn community for 73 years, and is currently housed in a station on Craigieburn Road next to the police station. Yuroke MP Ros Spence said the new facilities would help make sure firefighters can continue to keep Craigieburn safe. Hume and Whittlesea councils are hoping the budget will also include a funding windfall for congested local roads which have missed out on funding in previous budgets.
Last year, Hume council slammed the government for leaving the community “hanging” after it failed to deliver funding for the duplication of Craigieburn, Mickleham, Sunbury and Somerton roads. And while the government has already started works to improve Plenty and Yan Yean roads, Whittlesea council is disappointed Bridge Inn, Childs, Epping, Edgars and Donnybrook roads, as well as Craigieburn Road East, have been overlooked. The councils want the budget to include a northern outer suburban arterial roads package, which they say will reduce travel time, improve road safety and better connect
communities. Whittlesea mayor Kris Pavlidis said roads in both municipalities were not coping with significant residential and industrial growth. “The fact is that many of the key roads across both municipalities are unable to meet the demands of large and increasing volumes of traffic,” she said. “Improved road infrastructure is desperately needed to keep our cities and state moving.” Hume mayor Geoff Porter said the council was also hopeful the budget would bring funding for five schools which needed to be built in Hume within the next five years to cope with soaring student numbers.

EPA drone spots tip breach By Laura Michell A drone has helped the Environment Protection Authority catch a Wollert landfill operator breaching the conditions of its licence. EPA investigators recently used a drone to conduct an after-hours inspection at Hanson Landfill Services’ Wollert tip and found areas of waste had been left uncovered. EPA metro region manager Jeremy Settle said landfill licence conditions require waste to
be covered with at least 30 centimetres of soil at the end of the day. Hanson Landfill Services was fined $7939 by the EPA for breaching its licence conditions. Mr Settle said the camera-equipped drone discovered multiple operational areas at the Bridge Inn Road tip with uncovered waste, including plastic, metal and wood on the surface. “Covering any exposed waste at the end of each day greatly reduces odour or litter being blown about by the elements and finding
its way onto roads and impacting nearby properties,” he said. “Covering the waste also greatly reduces the potential for contaminated run-off entering storm water drains and waterways when it rains.” Mr Settle said the EPA would monitor the landfill to ensure compliance with all conditions of its licence. “EPA licence holders are expected to take their environmental responsibilities seriously. The licence conditions are designed to ensure the landfill is managed in a way
that minimised any impacts on surrounding environment and the community,” he said. Hanson Landfill Services recently applied to Whittlesea council to alter the tip’s permit to allow it to operate 24-hours a day. The change would allow the tip to accept commercial waste during off-peak hours. The application also seeks permission for a transfer station, new access to Bridge Inn Road and revised layout plans. A decision has yet to be made on the application.

US-bound squad looks for an assist Broadmeadows Basketball Association sponsorship co-ordinator Natalie Germaine-Gray said the trip would cost about $80,000. She said the girls had started fundraising, with plans for trivia nights, barbecues and a comedy night, but they hoped local businesses could also sponsor the team. “Opportunities such as this do not come around very often for our young people,” Ms Germaine-Gray said. “This group are not only basketball players but true community leaders, domestic and representative coaches,
referees, [they] run clinics for juniors, work at the stadium and are involved in a great deal of community fundraising and voluntary work.” Jaime Germaine-Gray, who is one of the players taking part in the tour, said she was excited by the opportunity to play basketball in America. Eleven girls from Hume are about to embark on the trip of a lifetime, playing basketball across the United States. The girls, ranging from 15-19 years of age, are part of the Broadmeadows Basketball Association and will head off on the representative tour later this year. As part of the trip, the girls will visit four states, playing up to seven basketball games. They will also attend Shoot 360, where each player will receive a shooting evaluation, ball handling analysis and constructive correction of their game from certified trainers.
Whittlesea council is set to trial the live streaming of its council meetings. The council will conduct a two meeting trial later this year to determine whether it should proceed with plans to broadcast meetings on the internet. A report to the council earlier this month recommended that the council start discussions with Channel 31 to provide a live streaming service for 12 months, with $25,000 to be included in the 2018-19 budget. However, councillors chose to delay the introduction of live streaming, opting for two trial meetings to be broadcast and reviewed by the council first. Under the proposed partnership with Channel 31, the council would have the option of streaming its meetings on multiple sources including its website, Facebook and YouTube. Currently, 13 of Victoria’s 79 councils live stream their meetings, while 14 upload audio after the meetings. Cr Stevan Kozmevski said the council had a lot to consider, including its recent performance, before it began live streaming meetings. “This council needs to grow up before we even consider live streaming,” he said. Cr Lawrie Cox said it was essential that the council had considered the risks associated with broadcasting meetings. “We need to be very careful about how live streaming is used and produced. We need to ensure we are covered in all circumstances,” he said. “If we are satisfied there is a pressing need for it, we can proceed with it.”

Station name anger grows A campaign to change the name of Middle Gorge station is gathering steam, with community representatives writing to the state government to urge it to choose another name. As reported by Star Weekly, the government has been facing a public backlash since it announced earlier this month that Marymede station would now be known as Middle Gorge station. Residents say Middle Gorge station sounds “comical” and like something out of Lord of the Rings. The government says the name was chosen because the station is near the “popular” Middle Gorge Park. However, the park is actually several kilometres away in the neighbouring suburb of Yarrambat in Nillumbik shire. A letter sent to Premier Daniel Andrews, Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan, Mill Park MP Lily D’Ambrosio and Yan Yean MP Danielle Green last week, states the decision has caused major protest in the community. The letter, written by South Morang and Mernda Rail Alliance spokesman Darren Peters, Friends of South Morang secretary Trevor Carroll, Lost Mernda historical group administrator Neil Johnson, Public Transport Users Association secretary Daniel Bowen, and University of Melbourne senior lecturer in urban planning, Dr Crystal Legacy, states most residents objected to the
use of Middle Gorge because Middle Gorge Park was several kilometres from the station. “Middle Gorge is not a well-known location. Many residents who have lived here for decades have written to say they have not heard of it,” the letter states. The group says the community was also angry at the lack of consultation before announcing the new name.

“Had there been community consultation, it would be certain the name Middle Gorge would not have been chosen considering the feedback since the announcement,” the letter states. The group says the majority of residents wanted South Morang station to be renamed as Plenty Valley, allowing Middle Gorge to be named as South Morang. Ms D’Ambrosio said the government had followed naming protocols, with stations unable to be named after people or businesses. “I am confident our community will understand and accept the rationale for the protocol and will enjoy this fantastic new project providing much-needed public transport for our community,” she said.

Million reasons to walk Epping’s Suzy Kolevski credits her dog, Pepper, with saving her life. A year ago, Ms Kolevski was in hospital recovering from a brain bleed. She says the following months were one of the darkest times in her life, but it was Pepper who helped her through the lows. “I had a very sad year and so I got a puppy. She has saved my life,” Ms Kolevski said. “I’m still recovering and still have a lot of surgeries to go but I am doing OK.” Next month, Ms Kolevski and Pepper will
be taking part in the RSPCA’s Million Paws Walk, in recognition of dogs’ roles as man’s best friend. The annual walk raises money for the RSPCA to help fund its work to prevent animal cruelty. “I’m doing the walk for Pepper. Animals will never hurt you,” Ms Kolevski said. Words of inspiration Roxburgh Park student Dani Khano has tried to make the most of his studies since arriving in Australia. The refugee arrived in Australia from Iraq 18 months ago and set about learning English at Broadmeadows’ Kangan Institute. During his time at Kangan, Mr Khano completed certificate III and IV in spoken and written English. This year, he enrolled in a course to complete his VCE at RMIT, in the hope of one day completing a nursing degree. Last week, Mr Khano, 19, was named as Kangan Institute’s inspirational student of the
Epping police have become the first in the state to wear body cameras. Officers started wearing the cameras on April 18. The small, battery-powered cameras will be worn on the uniform of general duties police officers as part of a six-week pilot. Information from the trial will help inform police policies and procedures ahead of the full roll-out of 11,000 cameras to officers across the state by 2020.

Cash to ease carpark squeeze By Laura Michell The morning rush is about to get a bit easier for commuters, with extra parking spaces to be added to Craigieburn and Epping train stations. The state government has announced that 745 new parking spaces will be created at Craigieburn station, taking the total number of spaces to 1100. A new carpark will be built along the eastern edge of the Hume Highway, directly east of the station.
Seventy-four spaces will be added at Epping, bringing the total car parks to 128. The spaces will be funded in next month’s state budget, with $60 million to be set aside for 2000 extra parking spaces, secure bicycle storage facilities and better pedestrian access at key train stations. Extra spaces will also be added to Belgrave and Sandown Park stations. Premier Daniel Andrews said the funding would ensure people can get a park at their local train station. “It’s frustrating to turn up at a station
carpark in the morning and find it already full – that’s why we’re building thousands of new car spaces to make it easier for people to get where they need to go,” he said. Yuroke MP Ros Spence said the extra spaces meant commuters would no longer clog up neighbouring streets with their cars and would free up more car parking for local traders, shoppers and residents. “This is a great boost for Craigieburn, which will now have more than 1000 carparks,” she said. “We’re making sure more people can get a park … and get home safer and sooner.”
The RACV has welcomed the parking boost, acknowledging that parking at railway stations has been a bug-bear for commuters. Mobility advocacy manager Dave Jones said the RACV’s recent On Track Survey found that parking was the biggest issue for Craigieburn and Epping commuters. “It is great to see this issue being addressed by the state government, however, commuters also highlighted the need for improved bus connections at these stations, which underscores the need for a multi-modal approach to train station access,” he said.
One big happy family Years of family gatherings have given Whittlesea comedians James Liotta and Piero Viavattene plenty of ideas for their new show. The duo from Mernda and Mill Park are about to embark on a national comedy tour, showcasing their Italian-Australian characters who came to life online. Liotta said the variety show centred on two characters – Pippo and Pasquale – who find themselves in crazy scenarios. He said the pair represented many of their family members and friends. “Pippo and Pasquale are the best, the quirkiest, the most absurd qualities of our dads, grandads, uncles, and even the relatives of friends,” Liotta said. “The characters are all a combination of all our ethnic families rolled into one. “Everyone can relate to the show because they know someone like that.” Liotta and Viavattene started posting short
sketches featuring their characters online a couple of years ago. Their videos have now been viewed two million times. Liotta said the pair have been performing together for about three years, staging 10-15 minute sketches at festivals and events. “The sketches then became bigger and longer and that is when we realised we had a stage show,” he said. “We debuted our show in Adelaide last year and it was well received.” The Pippo and Pasquale Tour starts in Werribee this weekend. Rising costs add to disadvantage By Laura Michell Coolaroo and Broadmeadows have been named as two of the most disadvantaged suburbs in the state after a recent analysis of Australian Bureau of Statistics Census data. The suburbs ranked sixth and seventh respectively on the disadvantage list, along with Colac East and Norlane. South Wharf was named the state’s most well-off suburb, while Laverton North was named as the most disadvantaged.
The ABS measured socio-economic advantage and disadvantage by “people’s access to material and social resources, and their ability to participate in society”. According to the data, Coolaroo is home to 3191 people, has an unemployment rate of 14.9 per cent and a median household income of $902 a week. The state’s median household income is $1419 a week. In Broadmeadows, 15.9 per cent of adults are jobless.
The suburb has a median household income of $900 a week. The ABS also ranked council areas, listing Hume as the eighth most disadvantaged Local Government Area (LGA) in Victoria. Central Goldfields Shire in central Victoria was named as the most disadvantaged. Uniting Lentara executive officer Donna Matthews said the cost of utility bills, rents and living expenses were rising faster than the average income and Centrelink benefits, compounding the problem for many locals.
She said Uniting Lentara had recorded a seven per cent increase in people seeking support since the last quarter of 2017. Ms Matthews said most people who reached out to Uniting Lentara needed help paying utility bills, rent and mortgages. “High unemployment/underemployment, coupled with increased electricity and housing costs, have given rise to a higher demand in financial support services,” she said. “Nearly half of all families [in the area] have neither parent in paid employment.”
Hume residents can explore the municipality’s woodlands, waterways and grasslands with the help of a new nature guide. The free Fauna of Hume guide, which was launched by the council last week, contains images of 61 native species of mammals, frogs and reptiles and includes six of the most common introduced species that can be spotted throughout Hume. It has been designed as a companion to the Birds of Hume field guide. Mayor Geoff Porter hopes Fauna of Hume will encourage residents to get outdoors and appreciate the abundance of wildlife and nature in Hume. “The beautiful images … will help engage and educate our community, assisting residents to bcome proficient at identifying both the native and introduced species they come across.” Laura Michell

Boundary change splits McEwen By Laura Michell More than 24,000 Craigieburn residents will vote in a different electorate at the next federal election under proposed changes to seat boundaries. Craigieburn is presently represented by two federal electorates, with residents south of Craigieburn Road residing in the Calwell electorate, while those living to the north are in McEwen. But, under proposed changes to electoral boundaries, all of Craigieburn will
be located in Calwell, which is represented by Labor MP Maria Vamvakinou. The changes, released by the Australian Electoral Commission’s redistribution committee, would see 25,000 voters from Craigieburn, Mickleham, Greenvale and Bulla move to Calwell. The electorate will take in all of Hume, with the exception of Sunbury. It is also proposed to make McEwen smaller, with voters in Epping, South Morang and part of Mernda to be transferred to the Scullin electorate.
Mernda voters living north of Bridge Inn Road and east of Plenty River will remain in McEwen, as will voters in Whittlesea and Doreen. McEwen is currently represented by Labor MP Rob Mitchell. “The proposed division of McEwen loses some, but not all, of its urban fringes and remains an electoral division which serves as an interface between greater Melbourne and the provincial and rural electoral divisions to the north,” the committee said.
Scullin, represented by Labor’s Andrew Giles, will be redistributed to take in the southern portion of the City of Whittlesea, uniting Thomastown in one electorate. Currently, part of the suburb is located in the Batman electorate. Victoria’s electoral boundaries are being redistributed to allow the creation of a new electorate in the western suburbs and to ensure voters are evenly distributed among electorates. Whittlesea mayor Kris Pavlidis said the pavilion would be designed to be gender inclusive, featuring separate shower and bathroom areas. “Traditionally, changeroom facilities at a sports club might only have the one open area or the one shower facility, and typically catered to male sporting teams,” she said. “A sporting pavilion that doesn’t have any women’s changerooms is outdated and presents a clear barrier for women to participate in sport.” The pavilion, which has been funded by the council and state government, will also feature a multi-purpose meeting space, kitchenette, public toilets, storage spaces and all abilities access.
Cr Pavlidis said she was very pleased the council was using gender inclusive design on all its new sport facilities, as well as making sure facilities catered for all abilities. “Council has an important role to play in ensuring our community spaces are designed to be inclusive. What community groups are you involved in? I have been secretary of the Samadhu Buddhist Meditation Association of Campbellfield since 2011 and I am also secretary of the North Victorian Sri Lankan Welfare and Cultural Association since 2013. I am also a member of the Craigieburn War Memorial and Remembrance Committee and the Hume Sri Lankan Senior Citizen Association. I have also recently become a member of Craigieburn SES. I have just completed my training and hope to be putting on my uniform from next week.

Where is your favourite local place to spend time?
What’s your connection to Hume, and how long have you lived in the area? I have lived in Roxburgh Park since January 2006 after a friend encouraged me to buy in the area. I now run a Roxburgh Park community Facebook page, where I share local events with

What, if anything, would you change?
What do you like about Roxburgh Park?
I would like to see more facilities such as activities for elders, and decent community halls for everyone to use. My biggest worry is that we don’t have enough plants. If I get a chance, I would plant more and make more sustainable parks for kids to play in.
I like the multicultural society that we get to live in, and that we have a lot of Sri Lankan families in the neighbourhood. It feels like home when we gather for a party or function.
In summer I love to go to the duck pond near Bridgewater Road. My kids loves to go to the Craigieburn library. If someone had never been to Roxburgh Park before, what would you say to entice them to the area? Before I moved to Roxburgh Park, I had concerns about the area. But when our kids started school and we got to know people from lots of different backgrounds, we found the area to be very nice and welcoming. In recent years, more infrastructure has been built. The shopping centre has got bigger and we have a beautiful train station with a decent carpark.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir was tickled to get in a pickle If there’s one thing that exceeds in enjoyment the fabulous food we eat doing Consider The Sauce, it’s all the many wonderful people we meet in the process. One of them is Justin Mansfield, a fine bloke and a long-time reader and supporter of CTS who has become a good lunch buddy and all-round pal. He is also a man with very sour tastes. We have happily taken delivery of jars from three different batches of his amazing pickled cucumbers. So when the opportunity arises for me to take up an otherwise empty place in one of his kimchi classes, I grab it. Even though I’m not a kimchi fan! I figure Justin’s kimchi is bound to be superior to that served in most Korean places. Besides, like it or not, I am interested in the story and the process. The crew that gathers at West Footscray Neighbourhood House is an interesting and happy one, with about half its members CTS readers. Justin runs a great class. He covers just enough of the history and background without getting bogged down in detail. Just as interesting is his advice on buying ingredients and the tale behind his journey to becoming a self-confessed “kimchi nerd”. Over two and a half enjoyable hours, he takes us from a pile of womboks to the finished product. Along the way, we learn about the necessity
of finding the right dry ingredients such as salt and chilli flakes, as well as the other vegetables. After that, it’s just a matter of salting, mixing, blending, tossing and bottling. It was a hoot! I learned a lot and now have two bottles of prime kimchi to experiment with at home.

Hume City may have caught South Melbourne by surprise and knocked it out of the FFA Cup, but it couldn’t pull off a second upset in the National Premier League. Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half, but South Melbourne broke the deadlock in the 70th minute through Oliver Minatel, with what turned out to be the winning goal. In NPL 2 west, Whittlesea Ranges had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Sunshine George Cross. Ranges were the first to open the scoring thanks to Danny Charalambous, but the Georgies scored twice in two minutes to lead 2-1 at half-time. Christopher Talajic scored the only goal of the second half to get the Ranges one point.
By Tara Murray Bundoora suffered a slip-up against Greensborough in Northern Football League division 1. The reigning premier, who started the season with a strong win against Northcote Park, lost its momentum on Saturday. Greensborough kicked the only three goals of the first quarter and dominated the game to lead at every break. It saved its best til last to seal the 14.11 (95)-6.13 (49) win and is the only team to be undfeated after two rounds. Gary Moorcroft kicked three goals for the Bulls, with Damandeep Aujla and Nathan Thomas named their best. Whittlesea is one of eight teams sitting 1-1, after losing to Macleod on Saturday. The game was all but over at quarter-time, with Macleod kicking nine goals to one in the opening quarter. The rest of the match was a lot closer, but Macleod went on to win 21.17 (143)-9.11 (65). Riley and Jack Dyson kicked two goals each for the Eagles, with Riley named the side’s best. Hurstbridge is the only team without a win. In division 2, Thomastown had a monster win against Fitzroy Stars, winning 25-20 (170)-11.10 (76). Matthew Ferraro kicked five goals for the Bears, with Daniel Chadwick and Nicholas Horman kicking four goals each. Horman was named best on ground. Epping lost 16.13 (109)-7.11 (53). In division 3, South Morang had a massive win against Lalor, while Mernda was too good for Laurimar.

The Eagles controlled the game, winning every quarter, including the last when they piled on 25-6. Every Eagles player scored in the 77-42 win, with Nicole Cameron top-scoring with 17. SPORT Swan comes home
City proves it’s up to the challenge
By Tara Murray Dane Swan didn’t disappoint in his return to his junior club Westmeadows at the weekend. The former Collingwood champion and Brownlow medallist pulled on the boots for the first time since a foot injury ended his AFL career in round one of 2016 and he was greeted by a big crowd at Willowbrook Reserve. Swan is keen to help out his junior club and play a few games with them this season, but for a few hours on Friday it didn’t look he would get out on the field because of his injury payout from the AFL. After some hard work by Tigers’ high performance coach and former AFL player Corey McKernan, Swan was given permission to play. The Tigers lost 15.15 (105)-10.5 (65) but Swan said it was “awesome” to be on the field. “It was awesome to come down and give something back to a club where it all started for me. “It looked a bit dicey at one stage, but thankfully common sense prevailed and they’ve let me come down and do my thing and hopefully the footy club gets something out of it. It’s disappointing we didn’t get the win.” Swan started forward before moving into his usual position in the midfield. He finished with 24 possessions though he didn’t think he used the ball well. “I think footy has passed me by,” he joked after the game. “I started a bit rusty … first kick went sideways. “I was a bit nervous at the start. I didn’t get nervous playing AFL, apart from my first game, [but today] I was thinking, gee I hope I haven’t lost it. “It felt awesome to be back out playing sport, I haven’t done that since I hurt my foot. “I didn’t get smashed off the line and apart from the legs and lungs, it felt OK.” Swan said he enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of playing local football and he was impressed by the standard of the competition. Swan was king of the people after the game signing plenty of autographs and posing for photos. His Footy Show mates Sam Newman and Shane Crawford, who were there the entire game, were also crowd favourites. Swan doesn’t have long to recover, with the Tigers facing Glenroy on Anzac Day. but that game clash could be his last – the AFL only granted approval for him to play two games.
Craigieburn City is enjoying the challenges that come with playing FFV state league 4 north. After dominating state league 5 north last year, it was clear it needed a greater challenge and coach Michael Loche said the team was more than up to what this year would bring. “We’re not shocked by the standard,” Loche said. “We’re not out of our depth. “To be fair, we knew we were going to win games last season and that’s not what you want.” City has started the season 2-1-1 despite not yet putting its best team on the park. On Saturday it had a 3-1 win against Brunswick Zebras. Jordan Connerton scored twice, with skipper Taner Altanhan scoring the other goal Loche said they had shown they would be competitive this season. “The Lalor draw was a fair result and against West Preston we were unlucky not to get the win. We just need to put our chances away. We’re pretty content with the start to state league 4.” City has a similar squad to last season. Sean Millington, Mertkan Ilhan, Alisan Demir and Nick Slaveski are among the additions. Goalscoring machine Connerton will again be one to watch. He scored 55 goals in the past season and already has eight in four games this year. Loche said barring any new injuries and suspensions, City was looking to have its full team playing in two to three weeks and was aiming to be in the top half of the competition. “We’ve improved from last season,” he said. “They’re used to the methods, culture and expectations and we’re looking forward to this year.” In a big boost for the club, it is likely to move into its new facility within weeks. In other results, Lalor United won 5-2 against Watsonia, while Greenvale United defeated Plenty Valley Lions 4-3. In state league 2 north-west, Mill Park, Hume United and Whittlesea United all had wins. Tara Murray

Demons put hype aside to seal a second win While all the attention was on Dane Swan and Westmeadows, it was Tullamarine that walked away with the four points in Essendon District Football League division 1 at the weekend. Swan’s return to his junior club created plenty of buzz around the traps and drew a crowd at Willowbrook Reserve. But Tullamarine kept a cool head and came away with a 15.15 (105)-10.5 (65). Demons coach David Connell said he was proud with how the playing group handled the situation and the hype around the ground. “I’ve been in Sydney all week and flew down at 10pm last night, so it was easy for me,” he said. “The group was really good and I think the focus today was on trying to stay in our own little bubble and focus on all the internal stuff. “We got out of here [the ground] half hour before the game and went across to another ground and tried to have some of our own time away from the hype of everything else. “The boys were fantastic and that was 18 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 24, 2018
probably the most pleasing thing for today.” Connell said Tullamarine had several plans in place for Swan and he was happy with how they curved his influence on the game. “I just said to them we back our 22 and forget about names and what they’ve done and play your role. “I don’t think he [Swan] had a big influence on the game.” Ryan Pretty starred up forward for the Demons kicking seven goals, while Anthony Prestia kicked four goals. The two, who joined the Demons in the off season, were named the side’s best two players on Saturday. Connell said the club had been keen to get both players to come across. “I rang Ryan a week after I got the job … he was one of the big ones I wanted to get. “Prestia was a guy we identified to replace a guy like a Jack Sims or Marcus Smith. “Prestia was pretty good last week. We gave him some feedback on some parts of his game
and he was really looking forward today to rectify those things. I had him best-on.” Connell said there were a few nerves heading into Saturday and he was relieved after the game. The Demons have the bye this week and will take the opportunity to assess their season after achieving their first goal of going 2-0. Connell said there were several players pushing for spots in the senior team and he predicted the group would get stronger. Tara Murray
