Hail Mary, full of pace Students from St Monica’s College will step back in time to the turn of the 20th century next month, when they take to the stage in Mary Poppins. The show is the Epping school’s major production for the year and will feature students from years seven to 12. Year 12 students Isabelle Mazzarella and Olivia Sirianni will perform in the show’s lead roles of Mary Poppins and Bert, while year eight student Mark Kriaris will play Michael Banks. Principal Brian Hanley said the annual production was a highlight of the school’s calendar. “Live theatre is always exciting and this production will be no exception,” he said. “The commitment of the staff and students involved in our performing arts faculty is to be commended and I am sure our performances of Mary Poppins will be first class.” Mary Poppins will be at the Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre on June 22-24. Broady gets down to work By Laura Michell Soaring unemployment in Broadmeadows will be tackled head-on, with the state government pledging $1 million to help more people find jobs. Almost one in four adults in Broadmeadows is unemployed, with latest federal government employment figures revealing the unemployment rate was 24.4 per cent in December 2016 – the highest in the state. In December 2012, the unemployment rate was 19.5 per cent. In the surrounding suburbs of Meadow Heights and Campbellfield, the unemployment
rate is at 22 per cent. Victoria’s overall unemployment rate is about 6 per cent. In a bid to help more people into the workforce, the government will provide Hume council with $1 million over the next three years as part of the Hume Community Revitalisation Program. The program aims to improve unemployment in Broadmeadows, Meadow Heights and Campbellfield by improving access to work experience, skills programs, financial support, career counselling, child care and learning opportunities. Suburban Development Minister Lily D’Ambrosio, who visited Broadmeadows
earlier this month to announce the funding, said the government wanted to address the gap between areas of high unemployment and the rest of the state. Ms D’Ambrosio said the program would aim to link people with employment opportunities generated by Victoria’s major projects, such as the Level Crossing Removal project. Hume mayor Drew Jessop said the funding would help the council achieve its goal of creating a well-educated and employed community. He said the program would help to improve and enrich the lives of people living in Broadmeadows and surrounding areas.
“We are heartened by the Victorian government’s funding. [The program] aims to increase the number of people progressing into employment from the suburbs of Broadmeadows, Meadow Heights and Campbellfield, support business development and increase the number of residents with year 12 or higher qualifications,” Cr Jessop said. “With a rapidly growing population, it is absolutely vital for us to come together to overcome the challenges facing Hume in an economy transitioning away from manufacturing.” ■ ‘Postcode of hope : Page 5

Merrifield shopping hub closer By Laura Michell Northern suburbs residents keen on retail therapy will soon be spoilt for choice, with a regional shopping centre set to open its doors in Merrifield in 2019. The centre, which will be the size of Westfield Fountain Gate, will be built by Merrifield developers MAB Corporation and Gibson Property Corporation, and fund managers QIC, which recently completed the $665 million redevelopment of Eastland. It will be built on 30-hectares within
the Merrifield city centre on the corner of Donnybrook Road and the Hume Freeway in Mickleham. Merrifield project developer Matthew Planner said the site will have more than 200,000 square metres of retail space and would provide people in Melbourne’s north with a cutting-edge retail experience. He said there was significant need for a regional shopping centre in the area, with more than 650,000 people expected to live in the outer northern suburbs by 2041. “The centre will be the epicentre of the

northern growth corridor of Melbourne,” Mr Planner said. “We know that shopping centres have evolved in recent years and so we want to provide a lifestyle destination offering entertainment and dining experiences in addition to retail offerings.”
The centre will be built in stages, with stage one expected to open in mid-2019. The first stage will likely include a major supermarket and speciality retailers. Mr Planner said the decision to build the centre in stages meant that it could grow with the community. “It is not our intention to wait for the population to arrive and deliver the centre in one hit,” he said. The shopping centre will be located alongside Merrifield’s business park. The two precincts are expected to create about 30,000 jobs.

Teen takes some poetic licence For 15-year-old Dante Sofa, writing and performing poetry is therapeutic. The Whittlesea resident has been putting his emotions and life experiences down on paper since he was 11 years old, after becoming involved with not-for-profit performing arts company, Outer Urban Projects. The company works with young people in the northern suburbs, helping them gain experience in performing. Dante initially visited Outer Urban Projects
to check out its dancing program, but quickly discovered a talent for rapping and beat boxing. Since then, he has performed at the Melbourne’s Writers Festival, Grand Divisions and was featured on Radio National’s Arts and Books program. Dante said he loved writing and performing. “It lets me get all my emotions out and express myself,” he said. “Meeting new people on stage is the best thing.” Dante attends weekly writing and rapping

workshops at Outer Urban Projects each Monday and is preparing to take to the stage again next month, as part of Poetic Licence. The performance will see Dante take to the stage alongside singers, writers and rappers who are many years older than him. Poetic Licence is at FortyFive Downstairs, 45 Flinders Lanes, Melbourne, from June 20-24. Details: outerurbanprojects.org
Some of Australia’s most iconic confectionery will soon be manufactured by former automotive workers. Broadmeadows’ Prydes Confectionery, whose popular products include hard jubes, retro and boiled sweets, aniseed stars and black jelly beans, has announced plans to take on 50 new workers – 11 of whom will be former automotive workers. The company, which has been manufacturing confectionery since the 1930s, is creating the positions after it received funding from the state government’s Local Industry Fund for Transition. The fund aims to help communities affected by the closure of automotive manufacturing. Prydes will begin a $4 million expansion to improve production. Currently, it manufactures more than 60 million packets of confectionery a year. Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan said the government was supporting Prydes to create local jobs at a time when they are needed the most. “This is a proud day for local manufacturing as we watch more ex-automotive workers find new opportunities in the workforce,” he said. Broadmeadows MP Frank McGuire said the new jobs would make a difference to the community. “We know that Broadmeadows has felt the impacts of the end of local car manufacturing – and it’s companies like Prydes Confectionery that are opening new doors,” he said. “We’re thrilled to see dozens of jobs coming to this area, including opportunities for ex-auto workers.” Laura Michell

All eyes on Broadmeadows By Laura Michell Broadmeadows MP Frank McGuire believes the suburb can become a “postcode of hope” after the state government appointed a board to guide Broadmeadows’ revitalisation. Led by Mr McGuire, the Broadmeadows Revitalisation Board will advise the government on opportunities and projects to capitalise on the suburb’s strengths and attract investment. The community-backed board will ensure residents have a say in the future of Broadmeadows, with the $14.3 million
Broadmeadows Revitalisation Project and the Greater Broadmeadows Framework Plan under way. As part of the revitalisation project, the government and Hume council are spending $23 million to redevelop the Broadmeadows Town Hall into a community and business hub. The government has also committed $4 million to improve Broadmeadows train station and $2.15 million for planning and construction of the Meadowlink Shared Trail. The Greater Broadmeadows Framework Plan
will guide the suburb’s redevelopment over the next three decades. Mr McGuire said the plan, the revitalisation project and the new board would help Broadmeadows become the capital of Melbourne’s north. He said the government’s investment showed residents that Broadmeadows mattered. “It is real recognition for the community, its vision, plans and advocacy, and an opportunity to drive change,” he said. “This initiative will help postcodes of disadvantage to again become postcodes
of hope by creating opportunities to build smarter, healthier, better connected and sustainable communities.” Mayor Drew Jessop said the council wanted to see Broadmeadows transformed into a thriving, commercial, industrial and residential hub, making it a “powerhouse”. “Broadmeadows has exceptional potential to become a vibrant town centre,” he said. “Our plans for the Broadmeadows town centre … will be key drivers in setting the direction for the continued renewal and growth of Broadmeadows and surrounds.”
Art that will floor you The floor of Broadmeadows town hall has been cut up in the name of art. Artist Robbie Rowlands recently cut into the floor of the 50-year old hall, removing a section that will be used in a sculpture to be displayed in the hall once its $32 million redevelopment is complete. The sculpture is part of an art project being undertaken by Rowlands, Hume council, RMIT’s Centre for Art Society and Transformation and Kerstin Thompson Architects. As part of the art project, a temporary exhibition, called Crossing the Floor (This hall breathes), will be at the town hall from June 1 to 3. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to recorded their memories of the town hall for a multimedia exhibition that will be displayed when the redevelopment is complete in 2019. Dinner with a cause It’s time to put on your dancing shoes and help raise money for cancer services at Northern Health. The Josie Minniti Fun Group is hosting its annual dinner dance on Saturday, June 17 to raise money for pancreatic cancer services and the Northern Health Oncology Appeal, which was launched last month. The group, lead by Epping’s Josie Minniti, has been organising fundraisers for the Northern Hospital for the past 20 years. Mrs Minniti’s dedication to helping the hospital resulted in her being made an officer of the Order of Australia last June. She started the group after several friends and family were diagnosed with cancer in the same year.

Mrs Minniti watched as her loved ones battled their cancers and vowed to do something to make a difference. “Cancer affects everyone and we have all lost loved ones to this dreadful disease. Together we can make a difference,” she said. Northern Health chief executive Siva Sivarajah said Mrs Minniti’s fundraising had enabled the hospital to buy vital equipment for patients, their families and staff. The Josie Minniti Fun Group annual fundraising dinner dance will be held at Ferraro Reception Centre, Campbellfield from 6pm-midnight. Earlybird tickets are $55 for adults and $25 for children. Craigieburn line in peak upgrade By Laura Michell Two extra services will be added to the Craigieburn rail line each week day from August in a bid to ease overcrowding. The extra services are part of a new metropolitan train timetable that will begin on August 27. A new morning peak service and an evening peak service will be added to the Craigieburn line, creating 10 extra services a week.
Latest passenger load surveys from Public Transport Victoria show that the Craigieburn line is one of Melbourne’s most overcrowded. The survey, which was carried out in May last year, found that 10 of the 20 morning services, between 7.01-9.30am were overcrowded. During the afternoon peak, between 3.31-7pm, three services carried too many passengers. The new timetable will also change the stopping patterns of Craigieburn services,
Extra services will also be added to the Sunbury, Werribee and Hurstbridge lines. “We’re running more trains at peak hour when extra services and more room are needed the most,” she said. “The new services will make a real difference – getting people to work quicker and home sooner.” Yuroke MP Ros Spence said the new services were a win for Craigieburn commuters. The new timetable will be available from July.
with all morning peak trains running through the city loop. It comes as new performance data reveals that about eight per cent of peak services on the Craigieburn line are delayed, making it one of Melbourne’s least reliable. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the timetable changes would simplify the way the Craigieburn, Werribee and Sunbury lines interacted, boosting the reliability of services on all lines and connecting passengers directly to more parts of the city in the morning.
Ricky’s hard days’ night Whittlesea mayor Ricky Kirkham will be sleeping rough for a night to shine a spotlight on homelessness. Cr Kirkham has signed up for the Vinnies CEO Sleepout, in which business and community leaders walk in the shoes of homeless people by sleeping on the streets of Melbourne on Thursday, June 22. Participants are asked to bring along a sleeping bag and are provided with a piece of cardboard to sleep on and a bread roll to eat. Cr Kirkham said the event was an important way to raise awareness about homelessness. “I think it is important for local government and business leaders from across the state to highlight the issues facing homeless people throughout Melbourne,” he said. “It will be a good opportunity to meet and network with different providers.” Cr Kirkham said he was prepared for the cold conditions.
“It will be an interesting experience, but given the fact I come from a military background, I’m used to sleeping in different places, often in cold conditions,” he said. Cr Kirkham is hoping to raise at least $5000 to help Vinnie’s homelessness services. To donate, visit: bit.ly/2rSbf0x Laura Michell

Cash to rub out dangerous roads By Laura Michell Blackspots in Mill Park and Thomastown are set to be made safer, thanks to more than $600,000 in federal government funding. Whittlesea council has secured $660,000 from the government’s Black Spot Programme to improve Station Street in Thomastown and the roundabout at Betula and Roycroft avenues in Mill Park. Station Street has been the site of 15 crashes,
including two fatalities, over the past five years. The council received $475,000 to install raised pavements and make intersection improvements along the road between Childs Road and Heyington Avenue. About $185,000 will be spent modifying the roundabout and installing a pedestrian island at Betula and Roycroft avenues. There have been four casualty crashes at the roundabout since 2012.

’’
- Ricky Kirkham
Mayor Ricky Kirkham said the council relied on funding from the state and federal governments to complete important projects. “The blackspot funding program is a great opportunity for council to apply to have some
of our problem areas fixed,” he said. “These two locations are the most dangerous on council’s local road network.” The funding follows a commitment by the council to improve safety along Station Street by widening sections of the road between Messmate and David streets, installing raised pavement near Alexander Avenue and building 14 road humps to slow traffic down. The projects will begin in August and are expected to be completed by March.
Healthy new beginning More Northern Health patients will be able to receive treatment close to home, with a $17.3 million upgrade of the Broadmeadows Health Service nearing completion. The upgrade, which began in September, is expected to be completed next month. As part of the works, two theatres have been added to the Johnstone Street health service, allowing Northern Health to increase its surgical services. The upgrade also includes expanded pharmacy and radiology services and improved pathology collection services. Broadmeadows Health Service general manager Belinda Scott said a new waiting lounge had also been installed in the dialysis unit, providing patients who visit the unit with a welcoming space. Patient Bob Langsford uses the unit three times a week and said the new waiting lounge had made his visits more comfortable. “Where we have once sat in the corridor that got crowded at times, we now have a
comfortable, homey environment,” he said. Ms Scott said staff had been working closely with patients over the past eight months to ensure there was little disruption to services. “This expansion will help us better manage surgical patients of higher acuity, increase the range and complexity of surgical procedures performed at Broadmeadows and assist more residents in Melbourne’s north to receive surgery locally and in a timely manner,” she said. MP pushes for road works Pressure is mounting on Whittlesea council to extend Edgars Road beyond Cooper Street to O’Herns Road as soon as possible, amid concerns the connection will be delayed until 2019. Thomastown MP Bronwyn Halfpenny has started a petition calling for the council to complete the connection to ease traffic congestion in Epping. Edgars Road currently stretches from Mahoneys Road in Thomastown to Cooper Street in Epping, but there are plans to continue the road from Willandra Drive in Epping to O’Herns Road. Ms Halfpenny said the council must complete the extension as Edgars Road is a council road and not an arterial road. She raised the issue in Parliament earlier this month, asking Planning Minister Richard Wynne to find out why the council was taking so long to complete the road. “We need council to urgently complete the connection of Edgars Road from Cooper Street to O’Herns Road. We can’t wait until 2019, the date council say they will do it,” she said. “We call on the council to fulfil its promise to the residents of Thomastown district to take responsibility and complete this road.” The council’s recently adopted Roads and Public Transport Plan lists Edgars Road as an arterial road. The plan states the extension is a very high priority, adding that it would provide an alternative north-south connection to Epping
Road by redistributing traffic through Epping and Epping North. It states the Edgars Road extension would also ease congestion on High, Miller and Cooper streets. Whittlesea mayor Ricky Kirkham said the council would negotiate with the developer who recently bought the land which the road will run through to ensure it is built as soon as possible.
‘‘
We need council to urgently complete the connection
’’
- Bronwyn Halfpenny
However, he said the council was also advocating for the extension be constructed as a duplicated arterial road with additional funding from the state government. Without government funding, the extension will be built as a single lane council road using developer contributions. Cr Kirkham said the council believed the extension needed to have more than one lane to cope with congestion. “We were disappointed that funding for the construction of roads like Edgars Road, and improvements to existing congested arterial roads, was not announced through the recent state budget as part of a northern outer suburbs arterial roads package, similar to the package that is being delivered to Melbourne’s west,” he said.

MY PLACE Epping’s Chad Wilkins is in his final year of high school at SEDA College while training to become a personal trainer. He speaks with Laura Michell. (Joe Mastroianni)
How long have you lived in Epping? I have lived in Epping for about five years. What do you like about it? I find that Epping is usually really peaceful. I have some old friends from school that live near me, so I hang around with them a bit. Tell me about local places where you like to spend time. I mainly spend time at home, but I love to go to the gym or Epping plaza with some friends. Have you always wanted to become a personal trainer? What about the job appeals to you? In a way, yes. I have had dumbbells since I was six and I would have little workout sessions. Then I got my first iPhone and one day I Googled workout and saw a guy talking about how to do an arm workout. It led me to show my friends how to do them. They got into it and became stronger and I loved knowing that I changed someone’s life. I became hooked on becoming a personal trainer. How is SEDA helping you realise your goal of becoming a personal trainer? It’s helping me realise how much I love to help people and how much potential I have

June – October 2017 • Traffic will be diverted in stages so we can build the new rail line under the road. • All lanes will be kept open during peak travel times to minimise delays and keep you moving. • Short term, off peak lane closures, speed reductions and closures of on-road bike lanes will be in place until January 2018. • Yellow line markings and barriers will direct motorists to the new lanes.
Please obey traffic signage and follow the yellow lanes. Thank you for your patience while we build the Mernda Rail extension.

I’ve been studying at SEDA for about four months. I was at a special school before I
started at SEDA. I didn’t enjoy being there, so I would take days off to stay home and research about muscles and workouts. I started talking to the trainers at the gym and they mentioned SEDA College.

SPORT Jaguars bare their teeth By Tara Murray Jacana produced its best four quarter performance of the season to beat local Hume rival Roxburgh Park in Essendon District Football League division 2. It was the Jaguars who held strong for longest, kicking away to win 17.17 (119) - 8.17 (65). The Jaguars made the most of the wind in the first quarter to lead by 34 points at quarter-time. The second quarter was all the Magpies with the ball spending most of the quarter in their front half. But they weren’t able to capitalise on the dominance they had, kicking 2.11 for the quarter. Kicking with the wind in the third quarter, the Jaguars blew open the game with six more goals. While the Magpies kicked a couple of goals early in the last quarter it was the Jaguars who finished off better. Their six goals for the term were against the wind – only one goal had been kicked at that end for the first three quarters of the game. Jaguars coach Robert Fletcher said he was happy to come away with a nine goal win against a really good side. “We had 20 more inside 50s for the game. I don’t think we capitalised on that,” he said. “Even in the second quarter, all their kicks [for goal] were outside 50 and we mentioned that at half-time. Yes, they’ve kicked a few points, but they were long kicks and they weren’t in dangerous positions with our backs doing the job there.” An ill Cameron Cloke finished with five goals. The Evans boys, Michael and Rhys, were dominant in the midfield. Fletcher said improved fitness was a key for the team this season, allowing players to run out games better. And he believes they are only going to get better. “We’ve got four or five more blokes to come in,” he said. “Shane Barry was out and Luke Roach didn’t play. Chris Johnson is another and there’s a couple others pushing from the twos who have come back from injury. “I think the first few weeks we were scrappy working out how each other play. “Now we’re starting to get momentum.” The big matches continue for the Jaguars, they take on Coburg Districts in a top of the table clash. La Trobe had all the running early but couldn’t convert on the scoreboard, kicking just five points for the first quarter to trail by a point at the first break. Thomastown stuns with a final quarter comeback Football can be a funny game. Thomastown had kicked just two goals in three quarters of football on Saturday, but kicking with the breeze in the final quarter they still thought they were in with a chance to topple Lalor in their Northern Football League division 2 match. In fact, at three-quarter time Bears coach Ben Chapman was telling his boys that the game wasn’t over, despite them trailing by 38 points. And he was right. The Bears kicked 8.9 to just one point in the final quarter to win their third game of the season, 10.22 (82)-8.16 (64). “They [Lalor] dominated for 90 minutes and 18 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 30, 2017
we still found a way to win,” Chapman said. “In the second quarter we kicked 2.9 so we had opportunities but had been flat all day with our tackling and contested footy. “We knew if we could get our hands on the ball and get it forward we would have enough opportunities to win the game.” Chapman said a few changes to their structure meant they started to play their brand of game in the final quarter. “We went smaller up forward and had a bit more leg speed. “We were happy to get the win considering we didn’t play well for three quarters.” James Rizzolio kicked three goals, while Ricky Mercuri, Daniel Chadwick and Matthew
Cupo all played good games for the Bears. Chapman made special mention of the defence efforts of Matthew Dirkx who shut down Jhye Baddeley-Kelly in the second half. Dirkx played as a defensive forward but also kicked two goals. The win leaves the Bears in fifth spot, percentage outside the top four. Chapman said they still they had struggled for periods in games against the better sides and still had a lot of work to do to match it with them. “We’re a little bit off from the top three teams but have shown if we can play good football we can match it with them,” he said. “We need to match it with them for long
enough periods if we want to beat them. If we’re not playing good football, we need to minimise the damage, which we did in the third quarter on Saturday.” For the Bloods, Mark Roumanos and Anthony Velicki kicked two goals each. Shannon Smith was named their best. In division 1, Bundoora recorded another strong victory, this time against West Preston Lakeside. Whittlesea lost to Hurstbridge. In division 3, Epping lost a thriller to Heidelberg West, South Morang was too strong for Mernda, while Laurimar had the bye. Tara Murray

Hume makes it three in a row for FFA Cup qualifier New Hume City coach Ufuk Kubilayhan didn’t have long to settle into the role but has made his mark early. Appointed last Monday, Kubilayhan took the reins on Tuesday night as Hume set its sights on qualifying for the national stage of the FFA Cup for a third straight year. Kubilayhan said he was happy with what he saw first-up from his side in a 4-0 win against Moreland City. “Moreland City came at us early and were very dangerous,” he said. “Our team did respond … the confidence we came out with after half-time was good and we dominated and played good transition.” Kubilayhan’s arrival comes as the club reshuffles it’s coaching panel. Dean Hennessey, who was overseeing the side in a technical
manager role has returned to the technical director role. Hennessey will step back from a lot of the day to day tasks with the senior team and focus more on running the club’s junior program. David Chick now takes on the role of senior assistant coach. Kubilayhan said having a stable coaching group behind him made the coaching transition so much easier. And he has a working knowledge of the club. “I spent two years at Hume coaching their under-15s and under-16s and we won championships back-to-back in 2014-15. “I went overseas and coached in Europe before coming back to Australia. “Hume approached me [about taking over the senior coaching role] and I was happy to
take on the role with a club with such high stature.” Kubilayhan was also at the club when Hume made it the last four of the FFA Cup competition in 2015, so knows the excitement that comes with making the last 32 teams in the country. “It’s important for clubs from state league to NPL to have that goal to work towards. It’s very exciting.” Last week’s win also seals a semi-final spot in the Dockerty Cup, and Hume is keen to move past the semi-finals for the first time. It was a short break between games for Hume, they were back in NPL action on Saturday night and defeated St Albans 2-1. Jack attacks a new goal By Tara Murray A year ago, Northern Knights’ Jack Petruccelle was one of the state’s hottest basketball prospects. He had represented Vic Metro at the under-18 Australian championships and had caught the eye of people at Basketball Australia. In August, he was one of 31 players who attended a basketball prospects tournament in Canberra where he trained under the eye of national team staff, professional coaches and American college representatives. While many expected him to be focusing on whether he looked at going to college or not, a letter from the Northern Knights asking him to attend a mid-season try-out changed everything. “Football was always in the background and basketball was the focus,” the Epping resident said last week. “I got the letter from the Knights and I thought that it might be my last opportunity to try out for them.” After impressing at his try-out, Petruccelle made his TAC Cup debut against Oakleigh in late July. He kicked three goals and was named among the best players, then lined up again to play the following week. Those two football games sparked something in Petruccelle, who was left with a tough decision – focus on the sport he had always played or take the risk and focus on football. “I decided to stop playing basketball,” he said. “It was a huge decision. It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make in my life. Everyone left it up to me. I think it was the right decision.” The 18-year-old returned to the Knights for their pre-season, with hopes of making the squad for the current season. Having spent so much time playing basketball, Petruccelle’s first football pre-season presented some challenges. “There was kids there that I’d never played against before,” he said. “There was heaps of fitness work, which was pretty good, but I’d never done anything like that. “You need a different fitness for basketball than you do football.” Petruccelle says an improved and modified fitness level has propelled his game to the next level. He has played in all eight of the Knights’ games this season and been named among their best players seven times. In his most recent performance, against Gippsland Power, he kicked five goals in a best-on-ground performance. It’s those performances that have him on the draft radar and part of the Vic Metro 47-man training squad for the National Championships. “It’s weird,” he said. “Just over 12 months ago I was playing basketball for Vic Metro. I didn’t expect to be picked for that team. It’s an even
the 53rd minute. A penalty let St Albans get one back in the 59th minute, but it couldn’t find an equaliser. Kubilayhan said improved consistency would be one area Hume players would focus on. In the five games before Kubilayhan took over, Hume had three losses and two draws. “Consistency is an issue I’ve looked at watching the previous games,” he said. “Injuries have contributed to that. We’re trying to get it right and to get consistent results in the games ahead of us.” He said they were also looking at adding a couple more players during the transfer period. “We’re looking at a few options to strength the squad going forward.” Tara Murray

Thomas Mancuso and Daniel Paolucci were promoted.
Women’s Football
It was a weekend of one-sided matches in the Western Region and Essendon District Women’s Football League. Every match had a margin of at least 55 points, with two teams winning by 100 points. Manor Lakes and Keilor kept Craigieburn and Glen Orden scoreless in their 100 plus point wins. Sunbury Lions did the same in their win against Tarneit, Caroline Springs easily accounted for Manor Lakes, while VU Spurs defeated Craigieburn.

bigger surprise to be in the squad for football.” Petruccelle doesn’t know if he will make the final Vic Metro football squad, but he knows he’s got a lot of improvement in his game to come. He says his kicking is the main area he an improve on. He said he had noted the feats of the likes of Melbourne star Christian Petracca.
Like Petruccelle, he was a talented junior basketballer before focusing on football. And while it’s possible Petruccelle could find himself on an AFL list next year he’s not thinking that far ahead. “I’m just focusing on playing with the Knights,” he said. “I haven’t even thought about the draft or playing AFL.”
