Epping’s school squeeze By Lexi Cottee Soaring student numbers at an Epping primary school have been the focus of an “emergency” meeting between the Department of Education and Whittlesea council. At an Aurora Community Association meeting on April 19, Whittlesea council advocacy manager Mary Agostino said Epping Views Primary School was under great strain. The school opened in 2008 with 30 students. Now there are 1241, which exceeds the school’s capacity – set at 1200 – for its current facilities.
Ms Agostino said that as the planned Epping North Primary School wouldn’t be built until 2017 or 2018, the April 15 emergency meeting was called to discuss the lack of space for preps and other new students starting next year. According to the Aurora meeting minutes, Ms Agostino said one suggestion was to put portable classrooms on council-owned land next to the school. Discussions between the school, council and department are in their infancy. Ms Agostino said the school was telling prospective parents that it was capping

enrolments for preps in 2016 at 210 pupils and giving preference to local families. Assistant principal David Whewell said 100 pupils had already enrolled for prep next year – “a high number for this time of year”. He said the school had been telling parents from Wallan, Thomastown, Lalor and Mernda to consider their local primary schools first. “They’re not told they can’t come here. Never at any stage has anyone been knocked back,” he said. “In a way we’re asking for their support.” Foundation principal Pauline Kubat said the
school’s biggest issue was determining how many portable classrooms were needed to deal with student numbers next year. “We grow considerably every year,” she said. “We got five new double portables to manage student numbers this year. “We’re just looking at where we could possibly put more portables if needed so we don’t take up more space on the oval.” Ms Kubat said the Department of Education and Whittlesea council were well aware of the school’s struggles “and are doing what they can and being supportive of us”.

Buses keep students connected By Lexi Cottee Transport-starved Doreen and Mernda residents are set for some relief with more buses planned to connect students to high schools. Transport Minister Jacinta Allan announced last week that Public Transport Victoria would add more bus services in 2016, linking Mernda and Doreen to Hazel Glen College, Whittlesea Secondary College, Mill Park Secondary College and the future Mernda P-12 school in Breadalbane Avenue. The announcement follows Yan Yean MP
Danielle Green’s repeated calls for more school buses to and from Mernda and Doreen. Hazel Glen College is the only high school in the area. It’s first cohort of year 7s started classes in January this year. Often families are given no choice but to fork out about $300 for each child per term to put them on notoriously crowded school buses to popular schools such as Mill Park Secondary College or Diamond Valley College. Soaring growth of the teenage population in the outer north places more pressure on the inadequate bus services.
The state government also plans to reinstate the Whittlesea to Greensborough bus service and introduce a new service from South Morang railway station to Diamond Creek station, with an extension to Diamond Valley College before and after school. Doreen father of four Michael Harding, whose eldest two children attend Mill Park Secondary College, was rapt with the news. “It’s a positive outcome and should alleviate the current services,” he said. But Doreen mother Rachael Rees was outraged. Her daughter is a student at Diamond
Valley College and was recently refused a seat on her school bus because of overcrowding. She said the additional services would be of no help to Diamond Valley College students. “There’s no logic here – it’s the most ludicrous situation,” she said. “How are they supposed to get to and from South Morang station?” Ms Rees wants a bus service from Whittlesea to Diamond Valley College and for students to be able to use the Myki system, which would save parents with more than two children thousands of dollars each year.
The courage flows on Corporal Cameron Baird’s toughest and ultimately fatal battle was fought amid heavy enemy fire in a small village in Afghanistan. The posthumously awarded Victoria Cross recipient was killed in Ghawchak village, Uruzgan Province, in June 2013. At the same time, then 22-year-old Sarah Mackin was battling a very different war, one waged on the homefront by her substanceabusing mother in Melbourne’s north. Last Wednesday night, Ms Mackin stood before a packed reception at a special awards ceremony to accept the 2015 Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG Memorial Award. She was a joint winner with 21-year-old Angela Atonio, who was also earlier this year named Hume’s 2015 young citizen of the year. The pair will share $10,000 that can be used to “follow their dreams,” Hume mayor Adem Atmaca said. Ms Mackin said she was honoured to
accept the award and was looking forward to contributing something meaningful to the community. She’s studying community services and community development and lives at the Broadmeadows Kangan Youth Foyer. Before moving into the Kangan centre, which houses, educates and trains homeless young people, she couch-surfed with friends before ending up on the streets. The centre offers secure housing for up to 75 young people in exchange for a commitment to study. Ms Mackin and Ms Antonio are the inaugural winners of the Cameron Baird Memorial Award, set up in memory of the former Gladstone Park resident to help young Hume residents pursue their passions. By Lexi Cottee Victoria’s poster family for the push to legalise medicinal marijuana has welcomed the state government’s plan to join the New South Wales trial to test the treatment of small amounts of the drug. Cooper, the four-year-old son of Mernda couple Cassie Batten and Rhett Wallace, has severe brain damage, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, cerebral abscesses and hydrocephalus, and his epileptic seizures are treated with cannabis oil. His case received widespread attention last year when the couple’s decision to administer Cooper with medical marijuana oil was broadcast on television show Sunday Night. Afterwards the couple were questioned by police and faced child protection workers a month later to explain why they were using an illegal substance to treat their child. Premier Daniel Andrews’ pledge to join NSW’s marijuana trial fulfils a pre-election promise to decriminalise cannabis for treatment of life-threatening illnesses because “families shouldn’t have to choose between breaching the law and watching their child suffer”. Ms Batten says the trial is a step in the right direction, but she’s eagerly awaiting further details. “We’re hoping they trial a natural oil rather than a pharmaceutical product.” The couple plan to hold off registering Cooper for the trial until further details emerge. The first of three trials is for children, like

Bid to bust bottlenecks By Matt Crossman Worsening traffic bottlenecks at Bulla have prompted renewed pleas for the long-awaited duplication of Sunbury Road, including a bypass of the town. Complaining that planners have been caught napping as the population on Melbourne’s north-west fringe grows, motorists are calling on the state government to urgently prepare plans to improve traffic flow and reduce crash risks on the undivided rural road, which is used by 26,000 vehicles a day. Sunbury resident Colin Ellis, who has been using the road for almost 30 years, said something had to be done. ‘‘All these roads from growing communities like Sunbury, Diggers Rest, Romsey and Lancefield … to get to the airport, they all have to come through Bulla,’’ he said. ‘‘The infrastructure has not kept up at all. The bottlenecks at night are just a nightmare; it takes ages to get anywhere. ‘‘This has been going on for six or seven years and it only gets worse,” he said. Mr Ellis said an 80km/h speed limit introduced in February on the stretch of road between the Tullamarine Freeway and Wildwood Road had improved safety. But it had also added to the time it takes motorists to get home, he said. Duplication of Sunbury Road by 2021 was high on a wishlist released by Hume council in the lead-up to last November’s state election. The road has a history of bad crashes. VicRoads figures show there were 12 casualty crashes, including one fatality and seven serious injuries, in the five years to June 30 last year.

Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn told State Parliament the road was a mess. He said the duplication and bypass, proposed when John Cain was Premier more than 25 years ago, were long overdue. ‘‘I have seen deaths on Sunbury Road. It’s quite dangerous and often clogged in peak hour,’’ Mr Finn said. ‘‘The people of
north-west Melbourne … have been well and truly patient enough.” A spokesman for Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said there were no plans to duplicate Sunbury Road. ‘’The speed limits on Sunbury Road were put in place to boost road safety. VicRoads will continue to monitor their effectiveness.’’

Health studies boost for north A multimillion-dollar medical research and training centre has opened at Epping to provide hands-on training for 1000 students in various health-care fields. The new Northern Centre for Health Education and Research will train medical, nursing, social work and health science students, while its research arm will concentrate on aged care, cardiovascular medicine, chronic disease management and prevention, and health services. Federal Health Minister Susan Ley was at the Cooper Street centre last Monday for its official opening, along with partners from Northern Health, La Trobe University, the University of Melbourne and state and federal governments. The centre has been built to mirror “real life” settings, such as hospital and physiotherapy clinics and will become a focal point for jobs in the north. La Trobe acting vice-chancellor Professor Jane Long said the centre would train local students, many of whom would then work in the area. “This exciting training facility is about innovative multi-disciplinary research. It gives our students real-world experience with one of the largest health networks in the state. These graduates will help increase a badly needed health workforce in Melbourne’s north, which is growing rapidly,” Professor Long said. Two men broke into the Stables shopping centre at Mill Park by forcing open an external roller door about 5.40am on April 13. Once inside they smashed their way into a tobacconist’s and stole an unknown quantity of cigarettes. They then jumped into a stolen Subaru station wagon and were involved in a pursuit with police later that morning at Fawkner. Renowned Melbourne artist Alexander Knox stresses that his towering blue sculptures are not just flowers but cloud-like wildflowers that were once wind-blown seeds. “It’s light, ephemeral and anti-monumental in a way,” he enthuses. Whatever the description, his recently installed sculptures are a beautiful addition to the Merrifield estate at Mickleham. In a coup for residents of the Donnybrook Road development, developers MAB Corporation and Gibson Property Corporation commissioned Mr Knox almost a year ago to provide an artistic “anchor” for residents of the yet-to-be completed mini-city. The artist is behind some of Melbourne’s most high-profile public works, including the kinetic light installation covering AAMI Park, the giant serpentine Creature inside the Royal Children’s Hospital and the LED coloured illumination of a 1960s building on the corner of Swanston and Burke Streets that won the Melbourne Prize for Urban Sculpture in 2008. When charged with the Merrifield commission, the Northcote-based artist said he wanted the piece to have broad appeal and to work with the landscape. “It’s so big and empty out there, in a beautiful way,” he said. In the end the cerulean blue seedlings – actually, steel – which appear bent as though by wind, mirror his preparatory cardboard cut-out. “It’s almost a child’s cut-out of a cloud in cardboard,” he said. “I wanted that same spontaneous, playful feel.” He hopes the sculpture, as yet unnamed, will provide some instant soul to the newly fabricated city. “They [the seedlings] have a role of identifying the place. They’re an identifiable feature, there to announce that you’ve arrived somewhere.”

The cut-off date looms for landowners to join a class action for compensation for damages caused by the Mickleham-Kilmore fire in February 2014. Warrnambool-based Maddens Lawyers is calling on all property owners who were affected by the fire to formally register as a group member before May 22 to ensure they are entitled to compensation if the case is successful. The class action was brought to the Supreme Court last October by Mickleham’s Steven Elliot Williams on behalf of anyone who suffered injury, damage or loss as a result of the fire that tore through 5500 hectares between Mickleham and Kilmore. The matter is next listed for a directions hearing before Justice Terry Forrest on June 15 and the trial itself is expected to start in May next year. Justice Forrest’s brother, Justice Jack Forrest, presided over the Kilmore EastKinglake Black Saturday bushfire class action. The defendants to the Mickleham-Kilmore class action are AusNet Electricity Services, Hume council and Active Tree Services. Mr Williams alleges the three defendants shirked their responsibilities to maintain the vegetation in the vicinity of the power line and, in the case of AusNet Services, to adequately maintain and operate the power line. He claims the fire started when a tree fell on a power line at the Avenue of Honour

Mr Pendergast advised those affected to complete a notice of registration form to be entitled to compensation. “If they do so they protect their rights when the case is successfully concluded and will not be liable for any legal costs,” he said. Anyone who fits the definition of a “group member” will automatically be bound by the outcome of the case. However, if they fail to register, they will not be entitled to compensation if there is a settlement. Tooling up for new shed A group of Craigieburn blokes who like to tinker with timber can now purchase $3800 worth of new tools. Members of the Northern Men’s Shed were among a group of successful recipients to share in $400,000 of grants from the National Men’s Shed Development Program. Northern Men’s Shed secretary Ross Pollard says the group will buy a wood lathe to create bevelled edges on tables and a range of handheld and power tools. They’ll also chip in about $400 themselves to cover the full cost of their purchases. The 18-member group, now operating out of a member’s double garage in Second Avenue, Craigieburn, has been busily fundraising to set up a new shed. The men are awaiting
confirmation from Hume council on a new site. So far, their kitty is sitting on about $18,000. The new shed is expected to cost about $60,000 to set up. “Because we’re retired blokes, we’re willing to give up our Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings to hold fundraising barbecues at Bunnings,” Mr Pollard said. He said they had been eyeing off a small section of DS Aitken Reserve in Craigieburn that was abandoned by the netball club almost 10 years ago. “We’re still waiting on council approval to do that. A tidy effort tipped

Unkempt nature strips and illegal rubbish dumping are being targeted in a council-led campaign to tidy up Hume. The council will host a free barbecue on Saturday, May 2, in Broadmeadows to find out from residents what parts of their suburb they want fixed or tidied. The Broadmeadows cleaning blitz between May 11 and 15 will be the first of three across the municipality. Other maintenance and tidying-up sessions will be in Sunbury West and Roxburgh Park. Council staff will repair or replace damaged council infrastructure and do a general “tidyup” in an area bounded by Camp Road, Widford Street, the railway line, the Western Ring Road and Electric, Graham and Gibson streets.

You might offer to mow your neighbours’ nature strips or bring in your neighbours’ bins when they are away or just simply stop by and check how they’re doing. SPORT Falcons search for new coach By Tara Murray Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows grand final captain-coach Mitch Johnstone is hoping to have a clearer idea of his coaching future this week after parting ways with the Falcons. On Wednesday the Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association club released a statement saying that a difference of opinion between club management and Johnstone had led to the split. Johnstone is in the running for the coaching job at Premier Cricket club Greenvale and just recently began talks with fellow sub-district club Werribee, which is hoping to join Premier Cricket in 2016-17. Johnstone met with Tigers officials on
Thursday. He told Star Weekly it had been a tough couple of days. “We’ve [Roxburgh Park] had a difference of opinions. I’m ambitious and want to coach premier cricket,” Johnstone said. He said the Falcons were “doing what is best for them” and he had always been up front with the club. Johnstone, who said the Greenvale job was his preferred destination, admitted there was an element of risk. “I guess there’s uncertainty of [being part of] Premier Cricket [with the Tigers],” he said. “But there is also the possible merger between VSDCA and VTCA [Victorian Turf Cricket Association] – I’m not the only one who has
uncertainty as no one knows what will happen. “There is an element of risk but I’ve done my due diligence.” Johnstone said he was hoping to know his coaching future this week. Falcons president Ben Wood said the news that Premier Cricket could expand with the introduction of two more teams in the 2016-17 season had changed everything for Johnstone and the club. “For about a week and a half, Werribee has been talking to him,” Wood said. “Mitch disclosed this to us … they were offering him the chance to be the club’s first premier coach in 2016-17. Our agreement was he could explore premier options – the
Ranges success builds momentum The magic is starting to click for the Whittlesea Ranges in the National Premier League 1. The Ranges have had a mixed start to their season with a 3-2-3 record but have won their past three games, one of which was against the Eastern Lions, who were on top of the east division ladder at the time. That form continued against Moreland City at the weekend, the Ranges dominant in a 4-0 win. Attila Ofli got a double, with Mario Pirania and substitute Daniel Peluso also scoring. Ranges coach Vinko Buljubasic said he expected it would take time for his side to gel. “We are doing OK at this stage – it is still early days in getting the team to gel well,” Buljubasic said. “We had a 50 per cent turnover from last season. “The improved recent form has come down to them listening to instructions. This year we have the right players in the right positions.” With a game plan similar to that of the past season, Buljubasic said it was the team that had taken the next step rather than individuals. He said the next challenge for the side was to continue the good form of recent weeks. “The last two weeks we have scored six goals … we need to get the players to continue to improve and keep scoring goals,” he said. “If we can take more chances in front of goal, we can hopefully get a few more wins in a row.” This Saturday, the Ranges will take on Melbourne Victory youth side in what will be the team’s biggest game of the year. The Falcons offered Johnstone a five year contract if he pulled out of the talks. “We said: ‘You aren’t walking into an interview for a job with a [VSDCA] club having a job with us’. “Mitch decided he still wanted to explore the Werribee role.” Wood said the club was likely to announce a new coach in the coming weeks. “We have a couple of people really interested and will be in a position to pull the trigger in the next week or so.”
Rebels inflict pain as Cannons fade A second-half fade-out cost the Calder Cannons in a TAC Cup clash with the North Ballarat Rebels on Saturday afternoon. Playing for the first time in three weeks, the Cannons were in the game at half-time but scored only three goals in the second half to lose 17.12 (114) to 8.6 (54). Cannons talent manager Ian Kyte said the Rebels were stronger at the ball and his side was made to pay for it. “They played harder football and converted well early in the third quarter to take control of the game,” Kyte said. “They are a really good side. They have two or three players who could be first-round [AFL] draft picks. “Our midfield didn’t play well … our accountability around the ball let us down.” The experienced group of Jack James, Ben Allan, Matthew Stillman and Mitch Conn were the best for the Cannons. Gisborne’s Jack Reaper, in his Cannons debut, was also impressive. Karl Brown kicked three goals. Kyte said the fact the team hadn’t played together for three weeks might have had an impact. “Players at this age need week-in, week-out football to get that consistency,” he said. The Cannons endured injury worries early in the season but Kyte said only two players were now on the injury list. James Peters is out for the season with an ankle injury. Callum Moore is still two or three weeks from returning after a broken wrist. An Anzac Day service was held at RAMS arena before the game. The Cannons and Rebels, along with the Geelong Falcons and Bendigo Pioneers who played at the ground earlier in the day, paying their respects. The Northern Knights lost 14.8 (92) - 9.11 (65) to Gippsland Power. The Power kicked six goals to two in the first quarter to set up the victory. The Knights closed to within two goals in the third quarter but couldn’t stay with the Power in the last. Broncos settle in the saddle after season’s rocky start You only have to look at the scoresheets to get a clear indication of Hume City Broncos’ Big V men’s state championship season so far. There have been some massive wins but also defeats by margins that no coach would be happy with. Throw in two close losses and a couple of close wins and you get a 4-4 start. Broncos coach Leonard Copeland is the first to admit his side has had an inconsistent debut. On Saturday night, the Broncos lost to McKinnon 95-89. “It’s definitely been up and down and a bit shaky,” Copeland said last week. “Our powerful point guard, Lee Jeka, got injured and missed early games; I don’t have
a back-up and it showed our depth,” he said. “He’s only just getting 100 per cent now. “We’ve still got a side that’s learning together and learning how to win as a team.” Despite some disappointing results, Copeland is pleased overall with his team’s performances. “Things will get better for us. I can see what we’re doing in training,” he said. “I’ve heard three or four people say that last year’s team would have easily lost these close games as we would have panicked down the stretch. “This year, there’s not as much yelling and screaming from me; the boys are doing it themselves on the court.”
The Broncos have plenty of experienced players, but it’s the younger ones Copeland says he’ll be most excited about in the second half of the season. “Luke [Egan] brings experience to the club and Lee has won premierships in Australia and overseas. “Add the two imports [Jermaine Maybank and Jamal Brown], and it gives us an experienced line-up,” Copeland said. “Luke and Shaun [Prendergast] started the season on fire so other teams have been guarding them like they would imports. “The younger guys make me smile, and we’ll see more of what they can do deeper into the
season.” Copeland said Broncos players were primed to perform better in the second half of the season. He said the side was gelling better than it had last season, when it just missed out on the finals. “Everything is in place and, barring injuries, we should be in the mix. “There’s four or five teams all together on the ladder behind the top two, Corio Bay and Ringwood. “If we can stay with the pack until the middle of the year, I think we’ll get better in that second half,” Copeland said. Pingers tame the Lions By Tara Murray If early indications are a sign of things to come, the Northern Football League’s division 3 competition will be a close one. After three rounds, only one side is without a win, while Watsonia is the only side undefeated, though it’s also had a bye. On Saturday, Epping shocked many with a strong win over South Morang, which had been impressive in the opening two rounds. For Pingers coach Steve Power, getting a good start was the key to his side’s 15.13 (103) to 11.8 (74) win. “South Morang has been the benchmark of the competition and was really busy in the off-season; we knew we would be up against it,” Power said. “Once we got off to the good start, we controlled most of the game.
“In the third quarter, they came at us and, credit to our boys, we kicked the last four goals.” Power said not letting the Lions run away with the game when they were in control was part of the learning process for his young side. “We’re still a young side and the hardest part is getting them to play good football for four quarters. “Against South Morang, we played well for three-and-a-half quarters. The boys are learning how to play better for longer.” Chris Chilcott kicked five goals for the Pingers, while Thomas Hughes, Daniel Moore, Shane Wood and Leigh Judd were among the best on field. Power said going to the ANZAC Day dawn service set the tone for the day’s play. “We had 22 players contribute and, for a side like this that doesn’t have superstars, we need everyone to contribute.”
The Pingers now have two wins and a four-point loss in the opening three rounds. For the Lions, Simon Crump kicked five goals. In division 1, Bundoora scored its first win for the season against West Preston Lakeside, winning 12.12 (84) to 9.15 (69). Little separated the teams all day, but the Bulls kept the Roosters goalless in the final quarter to take the points. In division 2, a wasteful Diamond Creek and Lalor couldn’t be separated at the final siren. Diamond Creek had five more scoring shots than the Bloods but wasn’t able to convert, with the final score 5.15 (45) to 6.9 (45) draw. Westmeadows knows every win counts in the Essendon District Football League division 1 competition – even at this point in the season. In a competition tipped to be close, the Tigers led at each break against Glenroy but did not quite run away with the game. It didn’t matter though, as the Tigers won comfortably, 17.4 (106) to 13.11 (89). Tigers’ coach Dave Connell said the game wasn’t just about the win. The two clubs were competing in their annual Anzac Day clash. “It’s the second one I’ve been involved in and it’s a really good build-up to the match,” Connell said. “It was an emotional day.” On the field, the battle was hard-fought. “They were pretty tough conditions with the middle pretty much mud, and it was raining during the game,” Connell said. “There were lots of packs and the ball spent a lot of time on the ground. “Whoever was going to be harder for longer was going to win.” The win takes on more significance for the Tigers which has a growing injury list. “Our ruckman had a fitness test before the game. We made an agreement that we wouldn’t risk anyone, so he missed the game and we noticed him not out there. Andrew Vavar came in and played his second game. “Kane North broke his thumb, Stephen Long dislocated his shoulder last week and Dean Simmons dislocated his shoulder on Saturday. We are lucky that we have a lot of depth in our reserves.” Tim Okines was best on ground. “We don’t get to see enough of him on the field,” Connell said. “He played seven games last season and still finished in the top five of our best and fairest. “Saturday was his first game for the season after broken ribs and he was best on ground.” Craigieburn continued its unbeaten start to the season, with a massive come-from-behind win against Essendon Doutta Stars. The Eagles trailed by 51 points before Jason Cloke and Jeremy Page inspired a comeback win, 16.14 (110) to 16.7 (103). Cloke kicked seven goals. Tullamarine got its first win for the season against Taylors Lakes, 12.7 (79) to 7.11 (53). In premier division, Greenvale was too strong for West Coburg with a 123-point win, while in division 2, Jacana defeated East Sunbury and Roxburgh Park fell short against Moonee Valley.
