Equality ‘stars’ on screen

By Lexi Cottee A review into last summer’s bushfires has recommended the introduction of an escort vehicle service to prevent a repeat of the roadblock issues which plagued landholders. The state Inspector General for emergency management’s Fire Season Compliance Report for 2013-14 was tabled in State Parliament last week. Police and Emergency Services and Bushfire Response Minister Kim Wells, who has promised to implement the escort vehicle service, requested the report in August in response to 78 significant fires – including the Mickleham-Kilmore and Sunbury-Dalrymple Road blazes – which savaged the state. The report tackles four areas of concern: road traffic management; community involvement in fire preparedness, response and recovery; initial attack and utilisation of resources; and cross-border fire arrangements. It addressed community frustration about traffic management, particularly from landowners wanting greater access to protect their properties, provide care to others and feed or attend to injured livestock. During the Mickleham-Kilmore fire, thousands of livestock were killed and 13 houses destroyed. A number of roads were also closed for days until the fire threat was downgraded. The report recommends including locals on incident management teams, developing plans to prioritise the reopening of roads, using fire service resources to provide escorts to vehicles, and establishing an animal welfare working group. Whittlesea advocacy and communications

A short film about homophobia and transphobia will be produced by a Whittlesea council youth services team. The Rainbow Project is one of 13 initiatives awarded a $10,000 state government Healthy Equal Youth grant to address suicide prevention and better mental health for young gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) people. Mental Health Minister Mary Wooldridge said the program was aimed at eliminating discrimination and stigmatisation of young GLBTI people. Council’s youth development officer, Tanya Nacarov, was thrilled Whittlesea’s youth services team had the go-ahead. She said the project would kick off with a camp for about 20 same-sex-attracted young people, and a film crew would record their conversations. “It will have two focuses: teaching staff as well as the young people at school,” Ms Nacarov said. The Rainbow Project is a pilot program that aims to create a more inclusive community for GLBTI young people. Young people across Whittlesea will be invited to develop their skills in all aspects of film production, engage in leadership opportunities, access support for themselves and promote support for others in the GLBTI community. The film will premiere during National Youth Week 2015 and be distributed to schools and groups.

director Griff Davis said he was pleased the report addressed community concern about roadblocks. “In some instances, if the traffic management points were moved 100 metres it would relieve a lot of community angst,” he said. “There is a lot of opportunity there for the CFA and police to better locate the roadblocks.”

An Epping-based not-for-profit community transport program doesn’t have the resources to meet surging demand, according to staff. In the past year, demand for Whittlesea Community Connections’ (WCC) transport program for residents who don’t own cars or have difficulty accessing public transport has risen by about 40 per cent. While the organisation’s volunteer base has grown, WCC client services team leader Peta Fualau says the organisation can’t cope under current funding arrangements. “We get new referrals on a daily basis,” she said. “But we don’t have the resources to meet that demand. “There are high levels of disadvantage in certain pockets and some areas have no public transport at all. “In the past, Whittlesea council has given us one-off grants to purchase or lease a vehicle, but our challenge is securing the ongoing support we need.” The Whittlesea Community Futures partnership, which is made up of 45 agencies including the council and Whittlesea Community Connections, is calling on the state and federal governments for almost $200,000 to fund the employment of a full-time transport co-ordinator and cover fleet and administration costs. WCC has 250 volunteers and 50 paid staff. In any of six vehicles, about 50 specially trained volunteer drivers and transport escorts are relied upon to ferry residents to and from medical and allied health appointments, social support groups or aged-care facilities. Hard climb a healing effort When Mickleham parents Addie and John De Nettis married 10 years ago, they never thought their lives would be dedicated to raising awareness about autism and money for therapy. Their three children, Michael, 8, Marco, 6, and Daniel, 3, have all been diagnosed with autism. Mrs De Nettis will be one of many running up the Eureka tower next month to raise more awareness for an expensive, but “miraculous”, autism therapy – applied behaviour analysis (ABA). The therapy costs $65,000 a year for one child but is not funded by the government. “It’s such a shame because ABA has changed our children’s lives dramatically. It’s a miracle – my children learned how to talk,” Mrs De Nettis said. “Typical developing children’s parents take for granted what we have to struggle with every day.” She’s urging the government to fund ABA therapy. By Tara Murray For Whittlesea Little Athletics Centre the results of the inaugural Whittlesea City Plate last Saturday meant the event was a success from the outset. The Plate, a handicap event pitting the fastest runners in different age group against each other in separate boys’ and girls’ 100-metre sprints, saw some of the youngest competitors take out the titles. The two races involved competitors from the centre’s six clubs. The centre’s Narelle Cullen said the girls’ race was a thriller. “In a blanket finish, 0.7 seconds separated all 10 runners,” she said. “Jessica Razmovska, of Mill Park/South Morang, took the plate from Jade Mclay [Metro] and Isla Hasouras [Northern Stars]. “Her winning time was 13.43 seconds, only 0.02 ahead of second and 0.04 ahead of third.” Nathaniel Audino (Mill Park/South Morang) won the boys’ race in 11.74 seconds, ahead of Danny Rigby (Epping) and Metro’s Tobenna Obani. Cullen said the Plate would become a regular fixture in the opening week of the season. “For the younger runners to take on and beat the older kids they look up to is amazing,” Cullen said. “We’ve had a real positive response to the race, which gets the whole centre involved as everyone has an interest in each of the races.” The centre has 420 athletes registered for this season. “We promote fun and fitness, and it’s about trying to get personal bests in the running and track and field events,” Cullen said. “Some kids are good in some events and not so much in others. It’s about encouraging them to try everything.”

Lalor Bowls Club is using this season in the Bowls Victoria metropolitan pennant competition as one of consolidation and building for the future. After losing a number of players in the off-season, including Australian representative Carla Odgers, Lalor enters the season with a completely different look. Club secretary David Ellis says this season will be a challenge. “Some people have moved on; we’ve lost a few and it’s certainly had an impact on the club. This season will be tough, but we’ll get through it.” Ellis says Lalor hasn’t recruited big names to replace the outgoing players but is looking inside the club. “We have a couple of new players but no big names. “Pretty much everyone has had to step up a grade and some have stepped up two grades. “We’re looking at keeping all six sides in their divisions and anything more than that is a bonus “We’ll be looking at finals for the following year.” On Saturday, Lalor (2) got its first win for the season, beating Eltham (1) in division 1, section 2. Lalor (2) won two of the rinks and 72-66 overall to take 14 of the 18 points available. In division 1, section 3, Lalor (1) lost 104-53 to Richmond Union (1).
