West’s own Jurassic Park A $1.5 million dinosaur-themed park will be built in the west next year. Residents of Stockland’s Grandview estate, in Truganina, which will eventually become home to more than 1600 properties, will soon be able to see the one hectare park being constructed on Altezze Drive between Healey Drive and Bratan Way. The park is set to feature a climbable dinosaur head sculpture; a multi-storey play tower with dual-level slide arms landing on pads framed with featured claws, a climbable sculptural tail, dinosaur eggs with baby dinosaurs popping out, a flying fox, swings, a matrix climber and seesaws. Stockland project director Ed Krushka said: “This dinosaur-inspired park will be the largest prehistoric-themed residential park space in Victoria, with the custom commissioned dinosaur head sculpture alone being 3.2metres long.” He said the broader park would also include a 50 metre x 50 metre open lawn kick-about area, open lawn areas for picnicking and exercising and a large picnic shelter with barbecue facilities, drinking fountain and banquet-style settings. Record $1b drug bust By Ewen McRae More than $1 billion of illicit drugs have been seized after a series of raids across the western suburbs uncovered Australia’s largest ever onshore methamphetamine haul. Three people have been charged after Australian Federal Police executed warrants at properties in Darley, Sunshine West, Brooklyn, Elwood and Murrumbeena on December 4. IT worker Stephen Francis Mizzi, 37, from Elwood, and couple Rachel Annette Cachia, 37, and Donovan Mark Rodrigues, 38 – both

customs brokers from Darley – were charged on Thursday in relation to the record haul. The AFP alleges all three were involved in the importation of more than 1.6 tonnes of illicit drugs – equal to almost 16 million drug deals – in stereo speakers originating from Bangkok, Thailand. In total, 1.596 tonnes of methamphetamine and 37 kilograms of heroin (a total of 1633 kgs) were detected with an estimated street value of $1.197 billion and $18.5 million, respectively. Police say it is the largest seizure of heroin in Australia since 2017.

AFP Deputy Commissioner Neil Gaughan praised the work of officers in keeping the drugs from reaching the community, and said the seizure was a warning to those seeking to import illicit drugs into Australia. “Australian law enforcement agencies are committed to combating the hold organised crime has on Australia to keep dangerous drugs off our streets and out of our homes,” he said. “Australia is a lucrative market for drug traffickers only due to the amount of drugs consumed by the public and the price paid for those drugs.

“This is a social problem that is the responsibility of everyone to address. “Police will continue to protect our communities and borders against exploitation by sophisticated criminal networks.” Border Force officers detected the drugs in vacuum-sealed bags after x-ray technology detected anomalies inside the speakers. The three people have each been charged with numerous counts of importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Melton hospital a step closer By Ewen McRae A new 24-hour hospital in Melton is a step closer, with the state government announcing that Western Health will run the facility once it is completed. While the business case for the hospital is still being formulated, the announcement that Western Health will integrate the new hospital into its existing health network – which includes Sunshine and Footscray hospitals – is a positive sign. Acting health minister Martin Foley said Western Health was best placed to deliver the

necessary services for the community. “Melton’s new hospital will be in trusted hands,” Mr Foley said. “Western Health has a proud track record providing the highest quality care to patients throughout Melbourne’s booming western suburbs. “As one of the fastest-growing communities in Australia, Melton locals deserve a world-class, 24-hour public hospital, right on their doorstep.” A tender has gone out to a shortlist of six consultants, who will carry out the vital planning and design work and find the best site

for the new hospital. The announcement has led Djerriwarrh Health Services and Western Health to start discussions over a possible amalgamation of services to better meet the needs of the community. A joint statement from the two organisations said any amalgamation would be voluntary from both organisations, and was still in the very early stages. “The announcement opens the way for a wider examination of the future of healthcare needs of Melbourne’s west,” the statement said. “Following four years of close partnership

between the services, the Western Health board and Djerriwarrh Health Service’s administrator have agreed to explore the best possible options and opportunities for healthcare in Melbourne’s west. “Engagement with staff and local communities of both health services will be an important part of this process and will build on recent community consultation by Djerriwarrh Health Services. “The services intend to enter this process straight away, but not at the expense of being methodical, timely and transparent with staff and communities.”

Mystic fair to bring some magic Melton will get a taste of the mystic this week, with a new fair to liven up the Melton Community Centre. The Holistic Fair will run from 10am on December 15, with a variety of stalls displaying crystals, candles, divination, essential oils and hand made products, together with readers and healers. Event organiser Wilhelmina Handley said she wanted to create an event that embraced spirituality and gave Melton a fair they could be proud of. “We wanted to organise an event that took

the word spiritual seriously,” Ms Handley said. “We’ve screened all our store holders so we’re giving the public a true holistic event. So that’s top quality readers, top quality healers, and all the products that are sold are genuine. “There’s definitely a market for something like this in Melton, and the response to what we’re planning has been fantastic. We’re hopeful that this will become an annual event.” The event will also raise money for Women’s Health West’s domestic violence prevention work, with the $5 entry fee and raffles run on the day.

“I’m an holistic counsellor, and I counsel quite a few women and men who are stuck in domestic violence relationships,” Ms Handley said. “So I know how much of an issue it is in the community and that’s why we decided to partner with Women’s Health West to do what we could to help.” Those interested in attending are advised to bring cash, as some stallholders do not have card facilities. Kerbside recycling will resume across Moorabool next week, following months of instability. Moorabool’s collection services were hit by the closure of recycling provider SKM earlier this year but the council has signed a deal with Cleanaway, which has taken over SKMs Laverton recycling plant. Household recycling collections will resume in Moorabool on December 16. Recycling across the shire has been sent to landfill since SKM closed. The council’s general manager of infrastructure Phil Jeffrey said the new deal was costing the council more but it was a positive step. “We are extremely pleased to have signed contracts with Cleanaway, a leader in resource recovery, who have taken over SKM’s facilities and our recyclables will once again be going to the Laverton plant,” Mr Jeffrey said. “We need the community’s help to ensure recycling remains viable and to keep contamination levels as low as possible. Residents can do this by ensuring the correct materials go in to their recycling bin. A full list of what can and can’t go in is on our website. “Whilst gate fees are higher under the new agreement, this will not result in any additional costs to residents in the current year. Contamination rates form part of the fee structure so we encourage everyone to place the permitted content in the recycle bin to keep fees as low as possible.” Ewen McRae

Five teenagers who evaded police in a stolen vehicle in the early hours of December 4 have been charged. Police identified a stolen Honda sedan travelling away from the CBD on CityLink about 4.20am. The vehicle failed to stop for police and as a result stop sticks were successfully deployed in Sunshine West. The vehicle continued to drive along the Western Freeway with the front tyres shredded, before coming to a stop on Ferris Road, Melton South, after failing to negotiate a roundabout. Five teenagers were arrested after fleeing the car. All five have been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving whilst being pursued and handling stolen goods. They will face a children’s court at a later date.

The Bacchus Marsh Christmas Festival is set to light up the main street this weekend, with stalls, carols, fireworks, and a visit from Santa all part of the big day. Main Street will be closed from 11am on December 14, with most of the festivities taking place at the Village Green from 3pm onwards. While carols will take place in the evening, followed by the annual fireworks, the day will be filled with activities such as gingerbread-making workshops, a kids circus, face-painting, live music, and a free outdoor movie. Event director Daniel Webb said it was always a highlight on the town calendar. “Iit’s always a very popular event with 2000 to

3000 people coming along to the carols alone,” he said. “It’s a good day for the community to come together just before Christmas and enjoy a fun day and night. “We have a gold coin donation at the carols which raises money for Neighborhood Place, which is the local Food Bank in Bacchus Marsh. “We’ve got over six school groups involved in the carols this year, which is great, and there’s a lot of talk online ahead of the event, which is really positive to see. We’re really looking forward to seeing everyone down there on the day getting into the Christmas spirit.“ The carols start at 7.30pm.

Voters in the Woodland ward of Moorabool council are reminded that voting in the council by-election closes at 6pm, December 13. Voting packs were mailed out to residents in late-November. The by-election is to fill the vacancy created by the death of Cr Pat Toohey. The election office will be open to the public at the Moorabool shire offices, 15 Stead Street, Ballan. Mail votes must be posted before the closing date to be counted.

Online bid to improve tourism By Ewen McRae Melbourne’s west could be set for a tourism boom, after the launch of a new website specifically to promote events and attractions across the western suburbs. The new online platform was launched by Western Melbourne Tourism on November 29, and will be the first of its kind for the region, providing both locals and visitors with a one-stop-site for the latest happenings in Melbourne’s west. The website will include six council areas,

including Melton. Western Melbourne Tourism executive officer Richard Ponsford said it would be a valuable tool for both large and small-scale events across the region. “Being such a multicultural area, Melbourne’s west is home to a rich and diverse, year-round calendar of events,” Mr Ponsford said. “Using state-of-the-art technology, we have created a website which captures everything that is happening across the region, presenting it on one user-friendly platform. “Western Melbourne Tourism has partnered

with technology company Everi to deliver this unique event feed, which is by far the most comprehensive list of ‘What’s On’ that you’ll find for Melbourne’s west.” Western Melbourne Tourism board chair Jan Jacklin said that the new What’s On platform clearly demonstrated what was possible when a cohesive approach to promoting a region was taken. “From small community-run events, to one-off workshops and performances, to arts, cultural and food-focused festivals, our exciting calendar of events is a real strength for

Melbourne’s west,” Ms Jacklin said. “Our team has worked closely with our six partner city councils to deliver a platform that ensures both locals and visitors can easily access details of what’s happening in the west. “We want to ensure those people who are already living in the west, or who are planning on visiting Melbourne’s west, are aware of just how much is happening around them, ensuring they stay local and spend their tourist dollars locally.” The What’s On platform can be viewed at melbourneswest.com.au/whats-on

Embracing the past Three years ago, Rhuma Smedley was guarded about her family’s indigenous ancestry, but a move to Melton has seen her embrace her heritage. Smedley, 26, grew up in Newcastle, and moved to Melton three years ago. In the past three months she has switched her artwork to indigenous works, something she’s still wrapping her head around. “My dad was part of the stolen generation, so we were always told not to talk about it, and no one knew that our family was Aboriginal until we moved to Melton,” Smedley said. “The culture and the community around here has helped me come out as being Aboriginal and being proud of who I am, and also encouraging my children to be proud of who they are. “That’s why I started doing Aboriginal artwork. It’s still a bit weird and I’m still a bit uncomfortable talking about it, but the

community has been really accepting, which is different from Newcastle. “I’m still trying to adjust to the styles of indigenous artworks, and I don’t even like a lot of what I do because I’m a perfectionist, but it’s a challenge that I’m embracing.” Smedley will be part of the Willows Homestead Family Fun Day on December 14, showcasing her art and heritage. She said her art was now about ensuring her own family history was recognised, and accepted. “I’m enjoying learning more about the culture and the symbols and meaning behind everything,” she said. “My dad is terminally ill, and the last thing he wants before he goes is to be recognised as the Aboriginal man he is, so I’m trying my best to get more recognised in the community so I can help him get recognised.” Ewen McRae

Facing up to the reality of fire CFA chief officer Steve Warrington is urging every Victorian to take responsibility for their safety Victoria is at the start of another hot, dry and difficult fire season. That was clear on November 21 when we called the first ‘Code Red’ fire danger rating in almost 10 years. That day, we saw catastrophic fire conditions with more than 150 fires start. There is no denying that climate change is increasing the frequency, severity and timing of dangerous bushfire weather conditions. More than 30 years ago, Ash Wednesday became a tragic new milestone for fire conditions in our state when 75 Victorians and South Australians lost their lives. The majority of these deaths occurred as people attempted to

evacuate at the last minute. These deaths, coupled with research on the flammability of buildings, led to the general idea that if you couldn’t leave well ahead of a fire, the safest thing was to stay and defend. That approach was supported by fire services for many years. Tragically … the 2009 Victorian bushfires introduced us to catastrophic bushfire conditions, the likes of which had never been seen in modern Australia. We realised that day that staying and defending in catastrophic, or ‘Code Red’ conditions was a futile venture with the most heartbreaking outcomes. And that’s why we talk incessantly about leaving early. Weather

conditions have changed. Fires have changed. Our behaviour must now change too. As a fire agency, we fear that Victorians are sliding into a ‘wait and see’ mentality with no clear plan or trigger point of what to do and when. We are heading back to the attitudes which saw dozens of people die on Ash Wednesday. This fire season, we are asking every Victorian living in high-risk fire areas to take responsibility for their own safety. The only way to guarantee that you will survive a fire on days of Extreme or Code Red conditions, is leave early and not be there. No home, farm or business is worth your life.

The average household is still using more water than is ideal, according to a new report from City West Water. The annual water outlook report shows that Melbourne’s water storages are secure for the next 12 months, but more needs to be done on the water saving front. Melbourne’s water storage level is 63.9 per cent, however Melburnians each use on average 162 litres of water per day – seven litres higher than the target of 155 litres of water per person, per day. City West Water acting managing director Maree Lang said residents needed to remain vigilant ahead of the drier months to come. “Factors such as an increasing population and a warming, drying climate have contributed to

Fire fleet takes off A larger-than-ever fleet of 50 firefighting aircraft unveiled at Avalon will be “critical” this fire season, Victoria’s emergency services minister said last week. The fleet will hit the skies in coming months to defend lives and property across the state. Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville said the record fleet, including two large air tankers and two aircranes, would support firefighters in what is shaping up to be a busy fire season. “With the return of two large air tankers, a record air fleet and thousands of firefighters ready to respond, Victoria is more prepared than ever for the upcoming fire season,” Ms Neville said on her visit to Avalon Airport. “Victoria’s largest-ever firefighting fleet will

provide crucial support to our hard-working crews on the ground this summer, responding immediately to major incidents right across the state.” The large air tankers can each carry up to 15,000 litres of water, foam or retardant and will be based at Avalon. The aircranes, which will be based at Essendon and Moorabbin airports, can carry up to 7500 litres of water and are essential in supporting other aircraft positioned across the state. The fleet also includes a mix of fire-bombing aircraft, air supervision and air intelligencegathering aircraft, and has a surge capacity of up to 100 that can support the Victorian core fleet and be called upon when needed. 12435463-CG51-19

Art connects Melton A unique artwork exploring the idea of a connected and integrated community is on display at Melton library. Connected Stories is a textile wall hanging that was been designed and crafted under the leadership of local artist Anu Patel. Patel worked with a team of 17 local makers and artists who have each used individual techniques to bring the artwork to life. Exploring the idea that everyone belongs, the artwork is the culmination of the Home Sewn: Makers of Melton project, which has been building local networks by connecting creatives in order to develop artistic skills. Melton mayor Lara Carli said it was great to see an artwork created from bringing the community together.

Bulls ready for big run chase By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh has a good test on its hands as it tries to end Gisborne’s winning run in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. Playing a rematch of last year’s grand final at Maddingley Park, both skippers ended day one happy with the position they found themselves in. Gisborne won the toss and elected to bat, making 7-284 from its 80 overs. Bulls captain-coach James Lidgett said they would have taken that at the start of the day. “I thought we bowled really well,” he said. “It was a real arm-wrestle. They kept wickets in hand and I thought we bowled really tight, we just couldn’t get the breakthrough. “It’s the best bowling we’ve done all season. I think 280 is about par and I would have taken that at the start of the day.” Ian Spiteri took two wickets for the Bulls. Lidgett said James Bailey was the pick of the bowlers, but didn’t have much luck. Lidgett said if they could bat well and bat out the whole 80 overs they would be in with a good shot of getting the runs. They made 309 in their last game, and have produced some big scores the past few years. The Bulls are looking for their third win in a row, after taking five rounds to get a win on the board. Lidgett said getting in a full day’s cricket had made a huge difference the past few weeks and they were able to show what they could do. In the first five weeks, the Bulls had three byes. “At the moment we’re in a good position and we’re testing ourselves out against a good side.” Overall, there’s plenty of positives for the Bulls with all seven of their teams in the finals

SPORT Bacchus Marsh resets goals with an eye on finals Bacchus Marsh has had to reassess its goals in the Bowls Victoria pennant division 2, section 1 competition. In its first season in the metro competition, having come across from the Central Highlands Bowls Division in the off season, Bacchus Marsh sits second at the midway part of the season. Bacchus Marsh president and player Phil Minniti said he was extremely happy with the first half of the season, during which they have lost just one game. Bacchus Marsh is comfortably in the top four, 45 points clear of fifth spot, with the side well on the way to a finals berth. “We’ve played everyone once and we’re really happy with it,” Minniti said. “It was a whole unknown going into metro and we didn’t know where we fit in.” Minniti said they had to rethink their aims for the season.

“You never go in thinking that far ahead,” he said. “You’re more worried about not finishing bottom two and being relegated. “At the halfway mark, we’ve got our eyes on the top four and then top two for a home final.” The team has had success in recent years, winning the CHBD division 1 title last season, with many of those players in the side this year. On Saturday, Bacchus Marsh had a good win against third-placed Deer Park. It was a close game all day, with Bacchus Marsh winning 90 (16)-83 (2). Minniti said Deer Park was always one of the best sides in the competition, and you’re never going to have a big win against them. “To get a win by that margin was pretty good,” he said. “They have some good players in every rink. One of our rinks was down 16-0 and then lost by four shots which was a really good effort. Sometimes the close rinks like that help get you over the line.”

Troy Williams’ rink won 25-23, Minniti’s rink won 22-19 and Daniel Willis’ rink won 22-16. Bacchus Marsh sits 16 points behind leaders Port Melbourne, but now has a 16-point gap on Deer Park. Bacchus Marsh faces sixth-placed Werribee and seventh-placed Melton in the two rounds before Christmas break. Melton has started to show some good form in recent weeks, including a win against Maribyrnong Park. Melton got over the line by one shot, winning 75 (14)-74 (4). Russell Taylor’s rink was the difference, winning 24-11. Daniel Harvey was the other winning skip for Melton, winning 19-17. Melton sits 23 points outside the top four. Sweet taste of Victory By Lance Jenkinson Western United coach Mark Rudan cut the look of a satisfied and relieved man on Sunday evening. United ended its frustrating three-game losing streak with a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Melbourne Victory in an A-League local derby at GMHBA Stadium. With honourable losses piling up in recent weeks, United needed to find a win that would keep them within touching distance of the top teams in the competition. Carrying a two-goal lead into half time, United did what it has rarely done in the early part of this season, put up the shutters and defended all three points. Rudan made no apologies for the defensive style of play after taking the lead in a pulsating first half. “Today, particularly at half time, it was about doing what we needed to do [to win],” Rudan said. “We play in a bit of a result orientated world, so it was important that defensively we tightened things up. “The last three games we’ve won every facet in terms of stats, except for the one that’s the

most important and that’s the scoreboard. “Today, the opposite, but we don’t really care. “The first half performance, we did enough to win that game, then in the second half they rolled their sleeves, they were very disciplined and very structured in terms of what our game plan was, so I’m really proud of them.” The opening 45 minutes was action packed for the 10,128 spectators – a record home crowd for Western United. It was a thing of beauty and Berisha could not help but celebrate with gusto on this occasion. If Western United had been criticised during its recent losing streak, it all centred on their lack of cutting edge in the front third. That issue was totally rectified in the win over the Victory. “There was a massive emphasis on our attacking third [at training] and you saw the result today,” Rudan said. “I’m really pleased for them because when you work on things on the training track and it comes to fruition out on the pitch on game day, as coaches there’s nothing better for us.” The fourth-placed Western United will have a short turnaround to Friday night’s trip to Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium.

Melton’s Jordyn Charge put in a dominant performance to claim the 360 Sprintcars Gold Cup event at Hamilton’s Western Speedway. Having focused most of his season on the 410 category, Charge returned to the 360 format for the Gold Cup late last month. It was a stunning performance by the 20-year-old, who was the best driver all day. Charge won his two heats to top the timesheets after qualifying to earn pole position for the main race. After jumping the original start, he was out of the blocks on the restart. He controlled the race for the entire 15 laps to record a comfortable win. It’s a track that Charge has had success on before, winning the Victorian 360 Sprintcar title at the same venue in the 2016-17 season. Charge was ecstatic with the win. “Any time where you can come away with the win is fantastic, but to do it in the fashion that I did made it even more satisfying,” he said. “My team provided me with a great car from the beginning of the night through to the end, so it was pleasing to be able to hold up my end of the bargain by driving it to victory. “I can’t thank everyone enough, which includes not only my pit crew but my sponsors, family and supporters in the crowd. To be able to finish the night with a win is one of the best ways to thank everyone.” Charge was back in action on Saturday in the 410 Sprintcar competition at Wangaratta. Lions bats finally fire to post their highest score Things finally clicked with the bat for Melton in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west competition. After starting to show some good signs in the past two weeks, the Lions put it together against Williamstown on Saturday. It came at the perfect time against one of the top sides in the competition. The Lions made 6-269, their highest score of the season. Lions director of coaching Anthony Gale said it was really good to see the group able to put it together. “It was very good and I haven’t got to say that too often this season,” he said. “They’ve continued on with what they’ve been doing the last couple of weeks. “We’ve had good players getting starts and getting out in other games.” Ben MacRae was the star for the Lions, making 120 not out, batting through the whole innings. After four scores of more than 20, it’s the first

time this season he’s been able to go on with it and make a big score. “Ben was able to go on with it and bat the day,” Gale said. “He is a good player and often when he gets starts he will convert them.” MacRae and Nathan Taylor had a strong third wicket partnership to give the Lions a good base of 2-100 at tea. Taylor finished on 51. Gale said after showing glimpses in most matches, which includes five scores between 26 and 52, Taylor was due for a big score. Nathan D’antonio had a cameo innings at the end, with 41 not out off 46 balls. Gale said the innings showed the importance of batting out your overs and putting a decent score on the board. “It’s a good score and for the loss of only six wickets,” he said. “It’s hard to win games when you don’t bat out your overs. You’re in the game all day with 270 on the board. “You could be behind at tea and then a

couple of wickets gets you back into the game.” A win would make it two in a row for the Lions and push them back up the ladder and into the finals mix. Gale said they know how important it is to put multiple wins together in the context of their season. The Lions are currently 10th, nine points outside the top six. It will be a tough ask with the Seagulls sitting in second spot with one loss. “We need to bowl consistently and take our chances,” Gale said. The Lions’ second XI made 167 with Gale top scoring with 55. Williamstown is 2-33 in reply. Baseball North Western Titans women’s side continues to step up with another win in the Baseball Victoria division 3 west competition. After winning their first game in round seven, the Titans have now won three matches in a row. On Saturday they beat the Fitzroy Lions 12-9. The Titans now sit third on the table. It was a tough day for the men’s side on Sunday, which lost to Springvale Lions 13-3. The Titans sit bottom with two wins.

By Tara Murray Caroline Springs finally opened its account in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 4 Charles Clark Shield on Saturday. Having completed just two matches before the weekend, getting the opportunity to get a win has been rare. On Saturday though against Melton Centrals, the Falcons were able to overcome a slow start to come away with the win. Falcons captain Kane Twentyman said it was a good win after they got themselves into the game. “They came out of the blocks hard,” he said. “Their opening batsman [Waduwidanalage Rangika] hit 68 and was hitting them everywhere. “A 180 to 220 score was on the cards.” The wicket of Rangika in the 12th over changed the game and the Falcons were able to steady and work back into the game. Centrals made just another 70 runs as they were restricted to 7-154. Twentyman said they were happy with that total considering what it looked like early on. The Falcons were also down an experienced bowler with Kane Sevior having to pull out before the game. It gave Lucas Blackman and Braedon Mulheran the chance to open the bowler together. “The young kids stood up,” Twentyman said. “The two boys open the bowling in the under-17s and on the weekend they opened in the first XI as well. “Lucas’ first wicket was an absolute peach and he got off to a good start and took 4-40.” Blackman is the side’s vice captain this year despite his young age. Twentyman said it was a good experience for him as he starts to take on a bigger role in the first XI. “We’ve earmarked him as one of our future leaders,” he said. “He is the captain of the under-17s and it’s a chance to be working closer with him. “I run things past him and he raises things as well.” The Falcons were cruising in their run chase at 2-119 before losing three quick wickets. Twentyman, who was the third of those wickets, said there were a few nervous moments before they got the job done. Gayashan Weerasekara top scored with 42. The win moves the Falcons to sixth on the ladder. Twentyman said they were hoping to get a bit more cricket in during the second half of the season. A win this round could have them in the top four. “We’ve never really felt out of it,” he said. “We had only completed two matches which

Swimming Melton swimmers came away with five medals at the recent Swimming Victoria’s Junior District Competition. Competing for the metro west district, Melton had a number of swimmers representing the club. Tihema Holmen won two bronze medals, while Romina Villegas, Marlee Leetham and Halaena Lachama all won one bronze medal each. Later this month, the club will have a number of swimmers compete in the Victorian Age Group State Championships. MG takes on SUV big hitters By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring The Chinese-owned MG carmaker has taken another important step in its bid to make an impact on the Australian car market by opening its first flagship metro dealership, Sydney City MG. Located at Mascot and surrounded by many of the automotive big hitters, the venue was used to unveil its new mid-sized HS SUV as the replacement for its ageing and underachieving GS model. MG HS is bigger all round than its predecessor and, more importantly comes with a raft of safety, driver assistance, technology and entertainment features that combine to make it the most refined MG to date. Two variants are offered, both with the same 1.5-litre 124 kW / 250 Nm turbo-petrol engine, seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The entry-level Vibe has a driveaway price of $30,990 while the higher-spec will sell for $33,990, or just $1000 more than the listed prices of $29,990 and $32,990 respectively. The styling highlights come at the front of the car with a large honeycomb grille with chrome finish and the iconic ‘MG’ badge front and centre. The grille then flows into wide, narrow headlamps with daytime running lights above extended lower air vents, also honeycombed. Entry into both front and rear seats doesn’t require much effort and there’s plenty of headroom in both areas. Boot space is an impressive 463 litres with the rear seats in place and expands to 1287 litres with the seatbacks folded. The advanced safety and driver assistance features in the HS are packaged together with the clever name of MG Pilot. They include autonomous emergency braking; adaptive

yet but given that the outgoing GS received five stars it’s likely that HS will match that score. Infotainment features are displayed on a 10.1-inch touchscreen with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto available. There are four USB inputs, two at the bottom of the front console and two at the rear. Paying the extra three grand and stepping up to the Excite model provides satellite navigation; LED headlights; 18-inch alloy wheels (17-inch in the Vibe); dual-zone climate control; rain-sensing wipers; powered tailgate; welcome lights; and a Super Sport mode that adjusts transmission, throttle and steering for enhanced driving performance. The MG HS launch was conducted entirely within the dealership and we’ll need to wait until the new year to take one out onto the road. Taking on such established and similarly-sized rivals as Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-Trail and RAV4 will be a huge challenge for the new MG SUV but the combination of very competitive pricing and a comprehensive safety and tech inventory makes it worth considering. Then of course there’s one of the most recognisable badges in automotive history – that alone will no doubt attract some buyers. MG’s policy regarding warranty is to match the best available in the country that they’re being sold in which, thanks to Kia, equates to seven years and unlimited distance in Australia. MG also provides seven years of roadside assistance.
