Time to Mo up After a month of raising awareness and funds for Movember, and some dubious facial hair, Arnolds Creek Primary School has again made its mark. The school has taken part in Movember for five years, with teachers growing mos, or taking on a physical challenge for the month, to raise the issue of men’s health in the community. School teacher Ben Velden said it was important to spread the Movember message. “I think as a school and a community it’s something that is pretty prominent right now,” Mr Velden said. “Things like suicide, mental health, prostate cancer, all those things are quite high in society and things that Movember is working to reduce. “We’ve raised awareness as much as we can, and then any money we can get on top of that is fantastic as well.” The school received 600 fake mos from Taco Bill Melton to use in its final assembly of the month, and is hoping to match last year’s fundraising, which netted $5000. “We’re always talking with the kids about mindfulness and positive coping skills, and heavily promoting that it is OK to talk about your feelings,” Mr Velden said. An emaciated American bulldog that was found tied to a tree below a bridge in Diggers Rest recently is on the improve, and the hunt is now on for its owner. Bella, was found by a member of the public on November 17 in a poor condition, suffering significant injuries that appear to be inflicted maliciously. She was taken to an emergency vet where she recieved a number of blood transfusions and is now in recovery. RSPCA Victoria inspector team leader Karen Collier said it was an horrific act of cruelty and
Bella was lucky to be alive. “We found Bella near Jackson’s Creek behind a small hill, nestled in bushes littered with garbage and debris. It’s a miracle she was found at all,” Ms Collier said. “She’s clearly suffered abuse and has been treated in a way no animal deserves. But despite the immense trauma she has been through she’s an extremely sweet, good-natured dog. Far too forgiving considering her experience. “After several blood transfusions, Bella’s blood cell count is slowly improving and her condition is stable. Vets will continue to monitor her neck wound and blood work to ensure she receives plenty of care.”
Bella was located near Jackson’s Creek, underneath the Holden Bridge off Bulla-Diggers Rest Road in Diggers Rest. The RSPCA say Bella was most likely left there between November 8 and 17, but more likely between November 15 and 17. They are appealing for anyone with information to come forward. “We are asking anyone who recognises Bella or has information about this incident to make a report and please come forward to help us identify the person or persons responsible for this act of cruelty,” an spokesperson said. Melton remains a burglary target By Ewen McRae Melton, Kurunjang and Toolern Vale are among the most burgled suburbs in Melbourne, according to new research from the RACV. The insurance company’s annual burglary statistics report revealed the burglary rate across the suburbs is one in 60 homes, the ninth highest rate in Melbourne. The number was an improvement on last year’s one in 45 homes, but still well above the state average of one in 91 homes. Brookfield, Exford, Eynesbury and Melton
South also had a burglary rate of one in 60 homes this year. The news was more positive across the region. The 3340 postcode, which includes Bacchus Marsh, Darley and Parwan, had a burglary rate of just one in 140 homes, better than the rate of one in 107 homes in 2018. The 3335 postcode, which includes growing, but smaller suburbs Rockbank and Plumpton, improved from one in six homes to one in 12 in the past 12 months. take to lower the risk of burglary. “Until crime rates are at zero, there is still reason for concern and more importantly, action,” he said. “We found that one in five people surveyed … have sophisticated home security solutions but rarely or never keep them activated or in
working order. “Regular checks and system tests are a simple a way to maintain peace of mind in the home.” He said strong community also plays a strong role. “Positively, one in five people already believe that their neighbours look out for them, and in turn, they look out for their neighbours. “Notifying your neighbours when you’re out of the home, asking them to check your mail or put out your bins can be a helpful deterrent for criminals and helps to foster a stronger sense of community.”

The countdown to Christmas is on in Caroline Springs, with Santa and his helpers sharing a special breakfast at CS Square this weekend. The big man from the North Pole will also take up residence at the square every day until Christmas Eve for photos at his magical land of Christmas, located outside Target. A specialised service to look after the legal needs of residents has been established in Melton. The Melton Community Legal Centre Incorporated operates from a room at Botannica Springs Community Centre, and has appointed veteran Lawyer Glen Ludbrook its honorary principal lawyer. Mr Ludbrook was formerly employed by the CommUnity Plus Brimbank Melton Community Legal Centre, which runs a limited service in Melton three days a week. He said it makes sense for Melton to have it’s own dedicated service and he urged the state government to fund it. “While it [the CommUnity Plus centre] is receiving about a million dollars a year in government funding, most of it is spent in St Albans,” Mr Ludbrook said. “The new centre has no funding assistance and will operate with volunteers and offer a broader range of services. “It is hoped, because of the desperate need, that the state government will support it. “The Melton council and community need to push for support. “The growing population deserves better than three days of limited free legal services a week. “If we had $300,000 we could provide a reasonable service, if we had $1 million it would be a good service.” Appointments for the service can be made by calling 0414 751 756.

Firearms, motorbikes, cars and drugs were seized by western region police during a four-day operation in Bacchus Marsh and Ballarat. In total, 30 firearms, including two .22 calibre handguns, shotguns, a long-arm rifle and two imitation firearms, were seized in a number of warrants executed at residential properties. Other items seized included four stolen motorbikes, seven stolen cars, five cars seized as proceeds of crime, ammunition, ecstasy tablets, Xantax tablets, heroin, MDMA, cannabis, cocaine, LSD and chainsaws. Among those arrested were a 40 year-old Bacchus Marsh man, a 27 year-old Bacchus Marsh woman and a 43 year-old Bacchus Marsh man. All three will face court on January 17.

A taekwondo centre is working to empower women, and giving them an opportunity for a year of free lessons. The Kurunjang-based AITA Independent Taekwon-do Academy is supporting The Pink Belt Project, which provide scholarships for free taekwondo lessons in clubs across Australia. Pink Belt Project founder Kristy Hitchens said the scholarship idea was born from a desire to help a friend and do her bit to help domestic violence survivors across the country. “It is my personal stand against domestic violence, combined with my passion for encouraging more women into martial arts for the whole-of-life benefits the training provides,” she said.
Paul Bailey, from the Kurunjang academy, encouraged any women in the area interested in taekwondo to consider applying for one of the scholarships, valued at $2000. “This is an amazing initiative that I’m very passionate about and super proud to be a part of,” Mr Bailey said. “AITA shares the same values as the Pink Belt Project, and our classes are structured to encourage our students to come out of their shells, form friendships, become disciplined and learn valuable life skills, all while learning self-defence, being active and extending their knowledge.” Details: www.pinkbelt.com.au

Carparks hotspots for thefts By Ewen McRae A spike in number plate thefts from cars has prompted Melton police to issue a warning to the public. Train stations and shopping centres around Melton, Melton South, Rockbank and Kurunjang are proving to be hotspots for the thefts. Melton Leading Senior Constable Jo Mutsaerts said stolen plates were often used to commit further crimes, such as petrol thefts, speeding, and burglaries.
“Not everyone realises immediately that they’ve been stolen, or what they could then be used for, so it’s important to let people know to report it as soon as they notice them stolen,� she said. “We had a spate of thefts over the weekend, and we could see a trend in the areas that they were taken. Although it was fairly spread out, it’s a broad issue for the community to be aware of. “We do know that any areas where vehicles are parked for significant periods of time are more susceptible.
“We recommend that anyone who does park at train station or shopping centres regularly, or doesn’t have a locked garage at home, to utilise the one-way number plate screws.� The one-way or ‘anti-theft’ screws are available for free at Melton police station. Senior Constable Mutsaerts said the build-up to Christmas was unfortunately a peak period for number plate theft. “Around Christmas time we can see a peak with the longer days and cars maybe parked for longer,� she said. “Good deterrents are things like CCTV at
the house, or dashcams that are set off with any motion are also good. “Once the plates are taken it is quite hard to relocate them, unless they are used in conjunction with another offence. “Quite often people don’t know they’re gone until the police knock on the door to investigate a crime. “So the main message is to be vigilant, use the anti-theft screws, and report the plates as stolen as soon as it happens so we can get them listed on our system.�
Carols to light up Melton It’s time to gather the family and warm up those vocal cords, because the annual Melton Carols are here again. The spirit of Christmas will be on full display at Hannah Watts Park on December 7, with festive cheer, free family entertainment, and a visit from Santa just some of the attractions. The evening kicks off from 6.30pm, and will include community performances from local schools, choirs and musicians, as well as some much-loved children’s entertainers. Sing along with the Mik Maks, Lucca Franco, Lheon, Brenton Cosier and Mumma Julz, who will be leading traditional and modern Christmas sing-alongs. Melton mayor Lara Carli said it was a great way to kick off the month as the build-up to Christmas continues. “We’re delighted to have Carols by Candlelight back at Hannah Watts Park following upgrade works, which included the
installation of a new children’s playground,� Cr Carli said. “I warmly invite everyone to bring their best singing voices and join in the fun as we come together as a community to build the excitement for the Christmas season and the coming school holidays.� The night will include face-painting, bauble and gingerbread decorating, and children can get help from Santa’s roving elves to send a letter to the North Pole with their wishes for Christmas. EPA drones detect landfill breach By Ewen McRae The Ravenhall Landfill has been fined by the Environmental Protection Authority, just months after gaining approval for its expansion. The EPA last week issued an $8261 fine to Landfill Operations Pty Ltd, a subsidiary company of waste management firm Cleanaway, after discovering about two-and-a-half times the allowed exposed waste at the Ravenhall site. The landfill, which is already the largest in Victoria, is allowed to have exposed waste with a surface area of 1800 square metres, but was

risk to the surrounding environment and nearby residents. “The licence requires that only 1800 square metres can be exposed, and thanks to our drone technology we were able to detect a clear breach of that limit,” Mr Lansdell said. “The size of a tipping face is an important element for environmental management of a landfill. Allowing such a large area of waste to be exposed only increases the risk of neighbours being impacted by offensive odour, litter, and for the pile to attract birds and pests.” Victoria will have new environment laws
coming into effect on July 1, 2020, which will introduce a general environmental duty requiring businesses and individuals to prevent harm to the environment and human health. The breach follows a decision by the planning minister and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal to allow expansion of the Ravenhall landfill, despite objections from residents and both Melton and Brimbank councils. A large part of the objections centred on the impact to nearby residents. The landfill expansion was ticked off in June this year.
Garden with meaning A new indigenous garden at Parkwood Green Primary School is generating plenty of conversation ahead of its official opening next week. The garden, which was designed as part of the Hillside school’s education program on the local indigenous culture and communities, sits behind the school oval, and is 70 metres long, filled with indigenous plants and artworks contributed from all levels of the school. Leading teacher Tania Sorbello said it was great to see the whole school come together to create a lasting legacy. “We wanted a whole school project that honoured the local indigenous community, and brought together our understanding of indigenous culture and people and also our local area,” Ms Sorbello said. “We looked at what plants we would have in there, what fauna we could attract to the garden, and ways we could make this as authentic as
possible, so we’re really happy with the finished product.” The garden features shelters, bug hotels, bird paths, indigenous artwork, painted tiles, a history timeline, and a meeting place. Ms Sorbello said the meeting place was designed to reflect the ongoing journey of the indigenous people and European settlers. “We’ve put the meeting place off centre, which we did deliberately,” she said “The part of the garden before the meeting place is much longer, to acknowledge that our indigenous culture spans much longer than Australian history after European settlement. “It’s been fantastic to see all the students come together to make this happen and learn about Australia’s indigenous history as well.” The garden will be officially opened on December 13. Callee defies all odds
Grants push for sports clubs
By Tate Papworth Doctors didn’t expect Callee Petropoulous to ever walk, talk or live beyond the age of 12. But the 24 year-old from Caroline Springs has defied all odds and continues to go from strength-to-strength. Callee’s parents first knew something was wrong when she began to exhibit flu-like symptoms. They took the then one-year-old to hospital where she was diagnosed with Aicardi syndrome, a rare neurological syndrome that predominantly affects females. Callee also has scoliosis, an abnormal cerebellum, shorter limbs and an intellectual delay. Callee’s mum Debbie said much of the early years were a steep learning curve. “When Callee was first diagnosed we had no idea about Aircardi syndrome and spent a lot of time researching and chatting with other families around the world,” she said. “We spent her childhood engaging with early intervention, doctor’s appointments and paediatrician visits.” Debbie says access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has helped improve Callee’s development in recent times. She partakes in regular speech therapy and physiotherapy. “Because of the intensive speech therapy, Callee is now starting to say a couple of words,” Debbie said. “The other day she went to say goodnight to my husband Jim, and she’d normally just put her head on him, but she said ‘bye dad’. “My husband is a ‘blokey bloke’ who doesn’t always show his emotions easily but that day he had tears in his eyes.” Callee also has access to support workers

who help her get ready each morning and take her to regular activities including Zumba, bowling, lunches and to work every Tuesday where she volunteers at a local op shop. She also takes part in a weekly literacy class for young adults with learning challenges. “Callee’s now living her best life, she’s able

to do what she wants to do, and there is a lot more freedom for us.” December 3 is the International Day of People with Disability, which aims to promote the rights and wellbeing of persons with disabilities.
Sports clubs are being encouraged to apply for the latest round of state government infrastructure grants, with facility improvement high on the agenda. The state government last week announced a new $22 million Local Sports Infrastructure Fund to help get more people involved in local clubs, and also make facilities more inclusive. Grants are available across five streams, including aquatic centres and indoor stadiums; strategic facilities; female-friendly facilities; community facilities; and planning. Melton MP Steve McGhie said it was a great opportunity for clubs to grow and evolve, while hopefully increasing their participation numbers. “Sport and active recreation is the heart and soul of Melton and Bacchus Marsh, unfortunately, many clubs and communities are struggling with rundown infrastructure,” Mr McGhie said. “With more and more women and girls signing up to play in Melton and Bacchus Marsh, we are getting on with upgrading infrastructure so clubs can keep up with soaring demand, while also making them accessible and more inclusive. Sparing one hour of your time could save a life. It has been two months since Star Weekly partnered with the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) to deliver that message, after it was identified that Melton and Brimbank had higher than average suicide rates. As we wrap up the campaign, NWMPHN chief executive, Adjunct Associate Professor Christopher Carter, said it was important for the community to be open in discussing suicide and mental health, and knowing what to do when friends or family are struggling. “When someone takes their life by suicide, or attempts suicide, the impact ripples out beyond themselves and their loved ones to their whole community,” Mr Carter said. “That’s why our suicide prevention trials are taking a community-led approach to preventing suicide. Everyone has a role to play, and everyone can make a difference – from just a kind word at the right time, to helping someone get the support they need in a crisis. “If we can even save one person from suicide, then all the time and effort we are putting into these suicide prevention trials will be more than worth it.” Part of the campaign called on residents to take up a short online course – QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) – which is designed to help people recognise if someone they know is at risk of suicide. The NWMPHN has reported a 300 per cent increase in people taking the course from the first six weeks of the campaign. The QPR website has had more than 500 visits since the campaign started, with 49 people taking the course, while the NWMPHN social media channels have seen the stories
reach more than 7300 people. As part of the campaign, Star Weekly spoke to doctors, psychologists, industry professionals, those with a lived experience of suicide, sporting clubs, and community groups, giving readers a look at the issue from a variety of angles. Lifeline Melbourne suicide prevention co-ordinator Kerry Dawson said the response and feedback from the local community since the start of the campaign had been incredibly positive. “It’s been fantastic to see the impact of the campaign with the Star Weekly, in both building awareness and encouraging local people to learn how to have potentially lifesaving conversations about suicide,” Ms Dawson said. “Since the trial began we have trained over 100 local people, from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and the enthusiasm and engagement has been outstanding. “The immense stigma and taboo that surrounds suicide creates a barrier to having conversations about it, but by creating a safe place to talk and discuss, it frees people up to consider what is possible in keeping their communities safe from suicide. “Our training sessions have focused on recognising when someone might be at risk and then connecting them with immediate help. Cr Lara Carli As Mayor, I’m proud to say that Council is taking a stand against gender-based violence through the 16 Days of Activism campaign.
You may have seen our Step up. Speak out. Respect women. decals that were recently unveiled at Caroline Springs and Melton.
Research shows that in Australia, one in three women have experienced violence in their lifetime and that at least one woman is killed by an intimate partner each week.
These decals were installed to help promote the message: We can end violence against women. Be a role model. Step up. Speak out. Respect women. as a way of demonstrating our commitment to both preventing violence against women and promoting gender equality to the community.
This is a truly horrific statistic, and unfortunately, the City of Melton isn’t immune. Council, however, is committed to preventing violence against women before it occurs, which is why we work so hard to create a coordinated, action-based approach to preventing this type of violence in our City.
There’s nothing quite like Christmas carols under the stars to get you in the festive spirit, so gather your family and friends and join us this Saturday for Carols by Candlelight at Hannah Watts Park, for an evening of free family entertainment. ENTERTAINMENT Grab your flame-free candles at the event and sing along with the Mik Maks – a much-loved favourite with the kids, as well as Lucca Franco, Lheon, Brenton Cosier and Mumma Julz who will be leading traditional and modern Christmas song-a-longs. McGhie reflects on first year Melton MP Steve McGhie has just completed his first year in state Parliament. He sat down with Ewen McRae to reflect on a busy year and some big future projects for the region. so we all know it’s a major issue.
What have been the highlights of your first year in office? Getting to know the local community groups and seeing the work that they do and the volunteering that they do has been a real highlight. Without that there’s many, many people within our community who would really struggle, even more so then they are. There are many, many achievements that have happened over the year in terms of infrastructure builds, and funding for things like schools, the duplication of the Ballarat rail line, the new station at Cobblebank and improvements to other stations. Yes, it’s still disappointing that we haven’t got Melton station done yet, but I’m hopeful that will be coming.

Has there been any word on Melton station? I’ve raised it several times. There hasn’t been anything new to say that something will be happening shortly, but my view of it would be that the government has put money up for planning for the electrification to Melton, (and) it’s my understanding that that work will start early in the new year. I would think that part of that would be about planning for the Melton railway station. That’s what I’m hopeful for. There’s no question that the station itself needs a complete overhaul, and if we’re being realistic, we’ve got all these new facilities along the line and poor old Melton station stands out. So I’ll continue to pursue the matter until we get it upgraded.
What do you see as the biggest challenge for your electorate? Population growth probably, and the expansion of the electorate and keeping up with infrastructure. That’s always going to be a battle. I think with those sorts of things it’s trying to balance it all. This electorate is growing by in excess of 7000 people per annum, which is a massive figure.
for the Melton Hospital. Any update on where that is at? The great thing about that is that the treasurer allocated $2.4 million for the planning of the hospital, and that process is well underway in regards to the consultancy group that’s been put together. My understanding is that this time next year we will have an outcome. The council has earmarked some land down south of Cobblebank, and I will be putting in a budget bid to try and get some money in the state budget to purchase that land. We’re all very hopeful that things will then start to fall
into place. The Western Highway is always a big talking point for locals. What’s your read on what needs to be done and any update on improvements to that stretch of road? It’s a constant issue for people, and we’ve certainly been made aware that it’s one of the biggest frustrations for our constituents. It is a federal road, so obviously there is some federal government responsibility there, and obviously there will be a request for some federal government money. I’ve raised it internally, and with VicRoads,
Do you feel like the electorate gets its fair share of funding? People in Melton would probably complain that they think they’re being left behind, and to some degree I can understand that. I think they’re unaware of some of the funding that comes into this electorate. I can rattle off millions and millions of dollars across a whole range of different items or infrastructure builds, like schools or roads or the hospital, that have come into the area. Melton City Council has been the most successful interface council in all of Victoria in regards to getting money out of the Growing Suburbs Fund, I think collectively they’ve had about $24 million to improve things around Melton. What are the big goals for 2020? I think just continuing on with what we’re doing. Making sure we listen to our constituents and the groups that are raising ideas, concerns, and even criticisms about things, and at least

Book of new beginnings A book written by St Dominic’s Primary School pupils has been placed in the state and national libraries. The Melton school has been working with students from Geelong Grammar throughout this year as part of a state government program to partner schools from different socio-economic groups. As part of the program, pupils and students regularly visited each other at school and worked with artists, writers and musicians to create a special memento. School leader Nicky Jones said it was an amazing experience. “It was about two groups of young children coming together from different parts of
Melbourne to explore, share and dream together,” Ms Jones said. “It was a bit of a shared adventure … and the goal was to build some bridges and strengthen communities, which has been fantastic to witness.” The result of the partnership was the book It’s Our Time, which is about coming together and forming new friendships. Ms Jones said it was a great achievement for the school to have its work included in the state and national library collections. “We’ll also be giving a couple of copies to the Melton library, so it can be in our community as well,” she said. United to weather storm By Lance Jenkinson Western United coach Mark Rudan intends to ride out of the storm. For the first time, United has struck a form slump in the A-League, sliding to a third straight defeat in a 2-0 loss to champions Sydney FC at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday. At the crux of the problem for United is its lack of cutting edge, failing to register a goal during the losing streak despite a bevy of chances. As Rudan points out, it has not been through a lack of enterprise, with United out-shooting their opponents 63-31 over the past three matches. Rudan has steadfastly ruled out any changes to United’s approach while they are creating so many advancements into the opposition penalty area. “Our philosophy is our philosophy and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the way we play,� he said. “We’re not a counter attacking side, that’s not us, that’s not our belief, that’s not my belief, that’s not my style. “We’ll continue to push forward. “I’m also not someone that goes and panics. “The definition of that is changing our formation.� This time it was Western United’s poor final ball into the strikers that was costly. While Rudan will not be changing Western United’s style, he has not ruled out making personnel changes. There are strong calls for attacking midfielder Max Burgess to be brought into the starting line-up after some stellar play as a substitute. “He’s making it harder for me to leave him out,� Rudan said. The biggest call in the lead-up to the derby will be whether Besart Berisha comes back into the starting line up after surrendering his spot to Kwabena Appiah-Kubi. Appiah-Kubi was ineffective as a starter, leading to Berisha’s insertion for the second half. Rudan confirmed that Berisha was not removed from the starting line up for the stare off between the player and coach a week earlier. “It was purely tactical this week,� Rudan said. Young striker Valentino Yuel, who starred for United in the pre-season, has returned to training following his ankle surgery. Yuel could be a solution to United’s recent goal scoring woes, but he is yet to receive the green light for a return to action. Western United’s upcoming clash with Melbourne Victory at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday at 4pm is huge for two at-the-crossroads teams. With the weather forecast predicting a perfect day and the game of utmost importance for two middle tier teams, United should be able to attract its biggest crowd to a home game this season.

SPORT Rookie draft comfort for a couple of Western Jets With no knock-it-out-of-the-park elite first rounders, it was a tedious AFL draft period for the Western Jets. There was not a lot of movement on AFL lists this year with teams preferring to stand pat rather than delve deep into the draft pool. Last year, 78 players were taken in the AFL national draft, but only 65 were taken this year, leaving players on the fringe to keep their fingers crossed for selection at the rookie draft. For the first time since 2015, the Jets had no players taken in the national draft, but eventually had two chosen in the rookie draft. Livewire forward Josh Honey was the first Jet off the board, taken by Carlton with pick three. Key position player Emerson Jeka was later snapped up by Hawthorn with pick nine. Surprisingly, there was no place on an AFL list for Darcy Cassar, the highest rated Jets player heading into draft week. Jets football operations manager Matthew Dervan said it was not the end of the road for those who missed out.
“If you look at the dynamics, there was 65 taken in the national draft from around 400 to 500 players nominated, so it’s a very slim pool that actually get selected,” Dervan said. “While it was disappointing for those boys missing out, I guess the famous saying is that it’s not the be all end all. “The rookie draft provided a bit of comfort to Josh and Emerson getting picked up by Carlton and Hawthorn. “We thought Darcy was our best chance, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be for him. “The biggest thing for all the nominees that missed out and we’re seeing now over the past few drafts is the rise of the mature aged recruits.” Honey will get to grow in a Carlton system that has prioritised youth in recent seasons. The 18-year-old from Keilor is a dynamic medium-sized forward with good burst away from the packs, an eye for goal and a willingness to defend. “They’re really developing a great culture
under David Teague that he’ll really enjoy and thrive in,” Dervan said. Jeka has the potential to be the steal of draft week. The 18-year-old from Altona Juniors was invited to the national draft on the assumption that a club would select him, but he left the room disappointed on Thursday night. Dervan would put no ceiling on Jeka’s potential in the big league because of his unique traits. “A 197 centimetre key position player, that’s versatile, can play at both ends of the ground, they certainly don’t grow on trees,” Dervan said. Meanwhile, Werribee forward Jake Riccardi will call GWS Giants home after he was taken with pick 51 in the national draft, while Williamstown midfielder Mitch Hibberd will have a second chance in the AFL system with Essendon, who took him with pick 10 in the rookie draft. Sports shorts Ballarat CA Darley remains unbeaten after defeating Buninyong on Saturday in the Ballarat Cricket Association. Having made a massive 8-363 on day one of the match, the Lions were heavy favourites heading into day two. While Buninyong showed a bit of resistance at times, the Lions were able to get the job done, bowling them out for 132 in the 53rd over. Hasitha Wickramasinghe was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-28.
VTCA Melton Centrals had a mixed weekend in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 4 Charles Clark Shield. Centrals had a terrible Saturday, bowled out for 58 against St Andrews, which made 8-164 in reply. On Sunday, they got their first win of the season, beating East Coburg. Both of Caroline Springs’ matches ended in draws. In division 5, Melton South Royals suffered a big loss on Saturday to Williamstown Colts, while their match on Sunday against Gellibrand was called off early.

Lions return to form By Tara Murray Melton returned to the winners’ list with a comfortable win against Box Hill in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west match. After showing improved signs last week, the Lions were able to put it all together and produce their best performance of the season to get the win. Lions director of coaching Anthony Gale said it was nice to get a win on the board, after four straight losses. The Lions bowlers were on fire as they bowled Box Hill out for 108. “The bowlers started off strongly and bowled well,” Gale said. “They have been bowling pretty well all season. “The fielding was good with a couple of run outs and a couple of nice catches.
“There was nice fielding from Dilshan [Kanchana] who picked up and threw down the stumps to run out a guy that had made two straight 100s.” Adrian Monitto took three wickets for the Lions, as all five players produced the goods. Chasing such a low total, it gave the Lions batsmen time to get in and be patient with their innings. “We were 0-88 with an opening partnership which was massive, as we’ve not had in the past. “We weren’t worried about setting a score and weren’t under pressure to score quickly. “We were able to take more time and were a bit more careful and spent time in the middle.” The Lions got the runs in the 38th over, finishing 3-110. Ben MacRae is starting to find some form, top scoring with 56. Gale said he was disappointed to go out so close to getting the winning runs.
The Lions sit in 10th, nine points outside the top six. They did suffer a setback with Mt Waverley successfully appealing the drawn result from earlier in the season. The Lions this week face second-placed Williamstown in a two-dayer. Gale said a win would help propel them back into finals contention. “It’s two-day game,” he said. “Williamstown is a really good side and it’s a massive test for the boys. If we can play some good cricket we’re a better chance to win. “Hopefully we’ll continue to play some good cricket. At different stages we’ve done that, but we haven’t been able to do it for the whole game.” The Lions remain alive in the T20 competition, after beating Werribee in the opening round of the knockout competition. They face St Bernard’s OC in the next round on December 10.
Bowls Bacchus Marsh continued its good form in the Bowls Victoria pennant, division 2, section 1. It was a dominant display on Saturday by Bacchus Marsh against Yarraville/Footscray (2), as they won all four rinks in the 103 (18)-65 (0) win. Justin Webster’s rink had the biggest win, 32-11. Melton suffered a big loss to Port Melbourne on Saturday, losing 100 (16)-72 (2).

Runs galore for Diggers Rest By Tara Murray The runs continue to flow for Diggers Rest Bulla in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. Coming off 4-450 in their last game, the Burras were on track for another 400-plus score against Riddell on Saturday had they batted out their overs. Burras playing coach Ras Batepola said there was plenty of confidence in the changerooms. “They are having a purple patch,” he said. “Everyone is clicking in the batting order. We are confident with our batting line-up, we can chase anything up to 300 and we’ve never had that in our changeroom. “Big boy [Indika Massalage] getting a double hundred has helped everyone and gives everyone confidence to work hard in the nets. “Everyone has got the talent to score 100s, they are now doing it.” The Burras resumed at 0-28 in reply to Riddell’s 236. Despite losing an early wicket, the Burras were never in trouble. When Raveen Yasas and Kevin Barker come together for the third wicket partnership, the two put the game beyond doubt. They put on 131 together, to take the side to within 19 runs of victory. The Burras got the runs not long after. They would go on to make 6-337 off 60 overs. Batepola said had they batted out the overs they would have likely scored 400-plus again. Yasas made 104, his best score for the Burras in his two years at the club. Batepola said Yasas was starting to show what he can really do. “He is a really good person and it’s taken some time for him coming from turf to synthetic. He’s a good player and it looks like
he’s going to score plenty of runs.” Barker also had a good day scoring 70, coming off a century in the second XI the previous round. Batepola said Barker played in the second XI due to not being able to play both weeks of the two-day game. It was a similar situation for Batepola this round. He made 112 for the second XI on Saturday. “It’s good to spend some time in the middle,” Batepola said of the situation. “It always helps to come back into the top grade.” The win leaves the Burras undefeated and sitting in second spot behind Gisborne. Batepola said they had been happy with the first part of the season. “It’s where we want to be with two games before the Christmas break,” he said. “Hopefully we can finish the year off in good form.” In other results, Bacchus Marsh just held on to record victory against Romsey. Defending 8-309, the chase went down to the wire, with Romsey bowled out for 298. St Anthony’s suffered another loss after Woodend piled on the runs. Woodend made 8-338 in reply to the Saints’ 242. Gisborne remains undefeated after beating Sunbury United. In the Jensen Shield, Eynesbury lost to Diggers Rest Bulla. The Burras finished 6-277 in reply to the Eagles’ 265.
