The big voice and friendly face of Gavin Barker is well known across the Moorabool shire, where he’s been the official town crier for more than two decades. Mr Barker has been the official shire announcer for the past 22 years, and loves every bit of it. “There’s a lot of citizenship ceremonies and council functions, meeting people and being the face of the shire I suppose, which is lots of fun,” he said. “A town crier is an ambassador for the shire, something I’ve loved to do. Having the big voice helps as well, I guess.” Mr Barker recently represented Moorabool at the National Town Criers Championships and World Town Crier Invitational in Echuca/Moama, picking up second place in the loudest cry (with a 99.1 decibel cry), and third in the Champion of Champions event. He was also presented the Pat Adamson Award, which is given to the crier who is trying to better the town crier guild in the community. “The man who won the world tournament was an ex opera singer, so there was some stiff competition there,” Mr Barker said. “But it’s all fun as well. I see it as a chance to meet my friends again. I’ve had friends for years from doing this. I can’t see myself stopping unless the lungs or legs give out.”

Property primed to sell By Ewen McRae Burnside is set for a property boom, according to two new reports into housing and liveability in Victoria. The suburb, which is part of one of the fastest growing regions in the state, is predicted to have Victoria’s second highest percentage of residential properties listed for sale in the next six months, according to a report from Westpac. The report looked at elements such as property type, accumulated equity, and tenure in home, overlaid with local market data such as turnover, average time on market and listing
sales prices to determine which suburbs were likely to have higher listings. Pakenham was the top suburb on the list, with Burnside coming in second. Nearby Caroline Springs (3rd) and Taylors Hill (5th) also placed highly on the list. Westpac general manager of home ownership Will Ranken said areas with high supply were likely to generate higher listings and sales in the next six months. “We know that lack of supply is a top concern for home buyers navigating the current market,” Mr Ranken said. “Despite some favourable conditions for buyers, like
record-low interest rates, low stock has made it tricky for some to find the right home. “Our model indicates that certain areas have higher than average tenure and accumulated equity, where longer-term homeowners who have been wanting to sell and move may decide that now is the time. “Our research provides an indicator of where there may be increased intent to sell in the coming months.” The Westpac report follows another study from People Choice Credit Union, which identified Burnside as one of the most affordable and liveable suburbs in the state.
The study said Burnside ranked seventh in the state for liveability, but had better affordability of housing than other suburbs on the list which pushed its ranking up to fifth overall, the best performing suburb in the west. Burnside has a median house price of $590,000. People’s Choice chief executive Steve Laidlaw said liveability played a big part in home buyers’ decisions of where to purchase. “Liveability can mean very different things depending on who you are talking to, so we look at a broad range of factors buyers might consider besides the cost of buying a home,” he said.

Future mapped out for Rockbank By Ewen McRae The future of the Rockbank town centre is clearer, after Melton council adopted a framework for future construction in the fast-growing suburb. The council approved the Rockbank Major Town Centre Urban Design Framework (UDF) at its recent meeting, providing a guide for all future planning applications in the centre. The framework is designed to ensure that future retail, community facilities and entertainment in the area are high quality,
appropriate and consistent, and are located within a set 20 hectare area of commercial land. Planning permit applications will need to align with the framework and other relevant planning policies to be approved by the council. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the UDF would provide certainty for new and old residents of Rockbank, which is among the fastest growing suburbs in Australia. “As one of Australia’s fastest growing populations, Rockbank needs proper planning to ensure the town centre is easy to use and filled with a mix of uses that will serve the

community for years to come – and that’s exactly what this framework aims to achieve,” Cr Turner said. “Right now, 1500 residents populate Rockbank but in the future, that will grow to a population of 22,800. I’m pleased that we’ve been able to deliver a framework that will support the area to grow in a really positive way
as it experiences such a significant change. “This sort of strategic future planning will cement Rockbank’s liveability and ensure it continues to be a place that people want to live, work, and socialise.” Community consultation on the UDF led to several additions, including the option of additional multi-level carparking, more retail activation space at Main Street and Station Street, an additional signalised intersection on Leakes Road (south of the proposed four-way intersection), and a refined urban plaza to facilitate its early delivery.

Players gather for some card magic A little bit of magic is about to hit Ravenhall, with a high-stakes tournament of the world’s first trading card game about to be staged. A ‘Magic: the Gathering’ tournament will be held next month at Pro Gamers and Collectables, with the winner to receive automatic entry to a major tournament in Japan and the shot at a $40,000 prize. Magic, one of the most popular games in the world, involves players battling their opponent with cards depicting spells or attacks. Tournament organiser Emanuel Cachia said it had a broad appeal to its many players.
“It will be a high level tournament,” Mr Cachia said. “It’s the biggest card game that we do, and the biggest in the world. It’s the one that kicked off all the card games 25 years ago so there’s a big following. “It’s quite a complex game, with a lot of problem solving, maths, communication, and there’s something like 100,000 different cards that can be used, so almost unlimited ways to play the game.” The winner of the Ravenhall tournament will receive entry to the tournament in Japan, along with $1000 prizemoney to cover flights. winner of the Japan tournament gets to attend a world championship, with prizemoney of up to $400,000. “Our tournament will likely go for about nine hours, and competitors will face at least seven opponents,” Mr Cachia said. “We’re hoping to get 100 players, which would make it the biggest tournament this side of the city.” The tournament kicks off at 11am on November 16 at Shop 2/977 Western Highway, Ravenhall.
Two loving grandparents killed in a car crash earlier this month have been remembered as “exceptional people with a zest for life”. Bruce and Lyn Anderson, farmers from Baynton in central Victoria, were driving near Melbourne Airport on Thursday, October 10, when their SUV and a Holden sedan collided about 3.20pm. Mr Anderson, 69, and Ms Anderson, 68, died at the scene on Sunbury Road in Bulla. The man driving the Holden was taken to hospital with injuries, emergency services said at the time. A 22-year-old man from Melton West was charged last Monday with two counts of culpable driving causing death. The Anderson family released a statement last week, describing the farming couple as keen travellers. “We are saddened by the loss of our beloved parents. “They were loving grandparents and exceptional people with a zest for life,” the family said. “They enjoyed travelling Australia and did many a mile in the outback and beyond. “This tragic accident will affect our family forever and we will miss them terribly.” So far this year, 221 people have died on Victoria’s roads, seven more than the total road toll for 2018. Teacher pleads guilty

A former teacher at Staughton College and Catholic Regional College has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a former male student. Nicole Woods, 55, appeared in court last week and pled guilty to two counts of sexual penetration of a child. Ms Woods’ victim was 15 at the time. Her crime took place during her time at Staughton College. She will face court again in December.

Sight for sore eyes A Melton optometrist says new technology is helping to dramatically reduce the number of people suffering eye diseases locally. Specsavers Melton optometrist and co-owner Surdeep Boparai has introduced 3D eye scanning as part of standard eye tests. She is hoping the Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) technology will continue to have a positive impact in the community. “In the past three months, since we’ve had OCT, we have doubled our detections for patients with glaucoma and diabetic eye disease,” Ms Boparai said. “By detecting diseases in their earliest stages, we’re able to work collaboratively with our patients and their ophthalmologist to prevent vision loss and help them see better for longer.” The clinic has invested $125,000 in the new
technology and expects to test more than 15,000 Melton patients over 12 months. The OCT technology takes a series of 3D scans of the back of the eye, including the optic nerve, retina and macula. It provides optometrists with enhanced diagnostic data leading to more accurate detection of vision-threatening eye diseases including glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. “The OCT scan allows me to see the granular structures of the eye so that I can better identify potential abnormalities and detect eye diseases in their earliest stages which is incredibly exciting,” Ms Boparai said. “Ultimately it can help prevent patients from losing their sight.” Ewen McRae
A 45-year-old Derrimut man has been charged with making a bomb hoax, threats to damage property, attempting to traffick a drug of dependence and possessing a drug of dependence. Police were called to a licensed premises in Caroline Springs on the morning of October 23 after reports a man was making threats. The man allegedly left an item resembling an old army ordinance device at the premises. He then attended another licensed venue where he was arrested by police.

It’s not always easy to tell when a loved one is struggling, but picking up on subtle changes in behaviour could save a life. Northwest Psychological Services psychologist Liana Borg said that while people considering suicide don’t always indicate their thoughts, there are a number of behavioural changes to look for. “The biggest thing to look for is any drastic changes in behaviour,” she said. “This can be a certain level of withdrawal from family or friends or it can be the complete opposite – catching up with people they haven’t seen in a while.” While there are signs to look for, Ms Borg said it’s not always the case. “I really want to stress that there are not always signs that someone is suicidal. I think when people are very determined to attempt suicide, they may not show any outward signs at all because they are so determined and don’t want anyone to stop them. “They can be very good at hiding it. It’s very important to note, especially when people feel guilt for not seeing the signs afterwards.” Ms Borg said there’s also “suicide preparation” signs to look out for. “We look at people selling possessions, preparing wills, having appointments with lawyers and tying up loose ends as potential signs,” she said. “Another important sign is lack of future goals or if someone suddenly cancels plans, indicating there isn’t much to look forward to in the future.” If you identify the signs in someone, Ms Borg said opening dialogue could save a life. “A lot of people don’t talk because they’re worried they’ll open Pandora’s box and not

know how to deal with it, but it’s not about how they deal with it, it’s about getting the person who is struggling the support they need,” she said. “It’s a big misconception, just because a person is thinking about it, doesn’t mean talking about it will trigger something, if anything it may help them find the support they need.” NWMPHN is offering a short online course

Scale up with craft grants Small-scale businesses will have the chance to stretch themselves further, following the introduction of a new grants program from the state government. Local member Steve McGhie launched the government’s $10 million Small-Scale and Craft Program last week, and encouraged all small-scale producers across the region to apply. “Victoria’s small-scale and craft producers have enormous potential to take the state’s phenomenal produce to the world – we’re backing their expansions, job creation and new products,” Mr McGhie said. “If you’re one of Victoria’s unique, small-scale food, craft beer or spirit producers, I encourage you to apply for a grant – and if you’re a Victorian who loves good food and drink, get out and support our stellar local producers.” Grants of up to $25,000 are available to eligible small-scale and craft producers for projects that support businesses to scale up, expand their operations and diversify their products, while grants of $25,000 to $200,000 will go to eligible small-scale and craft agribusinesses for significant projects that will deliver benefits to the community and generate jobs. which is through art,” Rosochodski said. “After meeting Helen and Manfred [Zabinski] at Five Freedoms, I was overawed by their courage in the face of such sadness. I realised they needed all the support they could get, because public support is vital to wildlife rescuers. Health tick for sugary drink drop By Ewen McRae Melton sporting centres are embracing a program that encourages residents to drink more water and stay away from sugary drinks. Melton Waves Leisure Centre, Caroline Springs Leisure Centre and Melton Indoor Recreation Centre have for the past 12 months been part of a VicHealth Water in Sport initiative to improve access to water. The program aims to help change attitudes and preferences so that the community favours healthy drink options, particularly
water, over unhealthy, sugary soft drinks. It also targets moderately unhealthy drinks such as fruit juice and full-fat dairy products which should only be consumed occasionally. Melton council said the program has resulted in a 33 per cent reduction in the availability of unhealthy drinks at the participating centres. Mayor Bob Turner said the council was proud to be part of the program, and praised the outlets for embracing it. “It’s encouraging to see council and these sporting centres working together to
proactively target unhealthy drinks,” Cr Turner said. “With the number of overweight and obese people in the City of Melton above the national average, we know how important it is for council to play a role in helping our community create healthy habits. “Making water and reduced-fat milks more prominent at local sporting centres normalises the consumption of healthy options as the logical and easy choice for everyone.” The initiative has resulted in an overall 33 per cent drop in the availability of the most
unhealthy drinks, such as sugary soft drinks, at the centres. Meanwhile, healthy drinks such as water and reduced-fat milks are 28 per cent more available across the venues. Some of the most impressive results came from Melton Waves where the availability of unhealthy drinks was cut by 42 per cent overall and one of the fridges is now only stocked with water. Caroline Springs Leisure Centre is also leading the way with 58 per cent of its fridge now filled with healthy drinks.
Celebrating 150 years A century and a half after it first opened its doors, Toolern Vale and District Primary School is ready to celebrate. The school community, old and young, will gather on November 15 to look back on 150 years of education and memories, with several generations of former students among those attending. Robert Tolley was the second of four generations of his family to attend the school when he started there in 1953. He said he had fond memories of his time there. “I have many good memories from those years,” Mr Tolley said. “It’s all a bit different looking around now, but I remember getting our polio needles up at the front gate, and digging the hole to put the can in for the toilet, and running through the orchard next door to nick the fruit. It was a lot of fun. “I remember one day someone had escaped from jail and we had a helicopter land at the
church across the road, which was very exciting for us all. I’ll never forget that.” The school had just seven students when Mr Tolley was there, but now has more than 170 enrolled. And while the school previously had just one building (which burnt down in 1965) and no power, there are now several classrooms at the campus. For teacher Kelly Busuttil, the school is more than just a place of learning, it’s like a family. “The school means a lot to me because it is like a family … It’s a special place, and it might sound a bit corny but it’s got that vibe that makes people feel connected to it and value it.” The school will have a celebration of its history from 2.15pm to 7pm on November 15 at the school. Cobblebank station set to open By Ewen McRae Victoria’s newest train station is set to welcome passengers in just over a month, with the official opening of Cobblebank station announced last week. A major construction blitz in coming weeks will prepare the station for its first passengers on December 2. The station is the biggest component of the half-billion dollar upgrade to the Ballarat line and stations. Work on 18 kilometres of duplicated track
between Deer Park West and Melton has begun in preparation for the station’s opening. Signalling upgrades and works at Ballan, Bacchus Marsh and Wendouree stations is also taking place. Acting premier James Merlino said the Cobblebank station was an important step in delivering improved services for the growing region. “The opening of Cobblebank station is a major milestone in delivering the Ballarat Line Upgrade,” Mr Merlino said.
“[It] will mean more frequent and reliable services for passengers in Melbourne’s growing western suburbs.” The new station will bring with it a new timetable, including two extra peak services each day and new bus services for surrounding suburbs. Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the construction was moving along on schedule. “This construction blitz is the final push before opening Cobblebank station and means we’re well and truly on the way to delivering
better services for passengers on the Ballarat line,” Ms Allan said. New bus services will also start running from December 2, between Cobblebank station, the newly rebuilt Rockbank station and nearby Aintree, with services every 40 minutes. Following completion of works on the Ballarat Line Upgrade at the end of the year, there will be a further commissioning and safety testing period to bring the remaining infrastructure online and enable more services to be introduced in 2020.

Pupils at Bacchus Marsh Primary School are getting a hands-on learning experience, with a new high-tech space in full swing. The school recently opened its ‘Makerspace’, which gives staff and pupils the opportunity to experiment with new 3D printers and scanners, robots and drone equipment. The Makerspace, which received $84,000 funding through the government’s Pick My Project initiative, encourages collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving in a fun environment. The new learning space will be open to students at other local schools, and will be available for community and business workshops and projects. Turner’s time comes to an end Bob Turner has served as mayor of Melton council for the past two years, after previously holding the role in 2013-14. He spoke to Ewen McRae ahead of this week’s mayoral election about his time at the helm and a big two years for Melton. (Mark Wilson)
You have two consecutive terms as mayor coming to a close, how do you feel at the end of it all? I’m feeling good, I’ve really enjoyed my two years as mayor. I’ve enjoyed the engagement with the community, I always do, and I’ve had a really good time. The community are really engaging and that’s the good thing about Melton.
The federal election saw a big campaign to improve the Western Highway, has there been progress there?
Having done it previously, does it get easier?
We’re pushing hard for a business case to improve that now. In Melton the Bulman’s Road interchange is a big issue, and every time we meet with different levels of government and ministers we bring that up, because it’s just not good enough in this day and age. We need that interchange to take the pressure off the centre of Melton. We need to open up the highway between Rockbank and Caroline Springs and increase the speed of travel along the whole highway, so we’re still pushing hard as a council for that.
To be honest it gets harder, because we’re getting busier. When I first did it in 2013-14 it wasn’t as busy as it is now, although we felt busy then. I’ve been really fortunate since I got on council 11 years ago, that we’ve got more busy, which is brilliant because there’s growth and that helps us advocate to government for services and improvements. What are you most proud of? There’s been so much development, and in a sense it’s getting faster. Last year I think we did $70 million of community infrastructure, so we’ve been able to deliver the stuff that the community needs. I’m proud of our council and our officers that we’ve been able to push and deliver so much, especially in the last 12 months.

I’m hoping to see some of the projects that we’ve been pushing for to be finalised. Obviously we want to get another step forward with our hospital, we want something to happen with the highway, but in general I want to see projects that we do for the betterment of the community continuing.

Elisabeth Georgostathis has made history, becoming the first Western Jets player taken at an AFLW draft. Georgostathis was not the only Jets player named on draft day, with a further two current listed players and a former Jets graduate making it four in all from the western suburbs club. Being selected with pick nine by the Western Bulldogs has capped a remarkable year for Georgostathis. The midfielder captained the Jets in the NAB League and featured for the Bulldogs in their run to the VFLW grand final. Georgostathis is proud of her link with the Jets and honoured to be the first player taken from the club. “It’s a great honour,” she said. “The Western Jets have helped me so much over the last four years. “I’m just so grateful for them and all the development over the years.” Georgostathis is relatively new to football compared with many of the other players
selected at the 2020 AFLW draft. The 18-year-old’s sporting journey started in netball, but she gravitated towards football over the past five years. “I did netball for about eight years, but I just found that wasn’t my sport with no contact,” she said. “I like the physicality, so football was more my sport.” Georgostathis was one of the most hard-at-it youngsters on the Western Jets list. She averaged four tackles to go with her 20 disposals per game, which saw her named in the NAB League team of the year. The Western Bulldogs are a perfect landing spot for Georgostathis. A western suburbs local, she will not have to travel too far to train and play, and she is already familiar with the kennel, having been part of the club in the VFLW. “I don’t have to travel too far, which is good,” Georgostathis said. “I know most of the girls from playing VFL with them. “It’s really good, especially this year coming
into VFL, I was really nervous but all the AFL and VFL girls included me, encouraged me and supported me through every step. “I’m really grateful for them and really excited for next year.” Georgostathis will never forget the moment she heard her name called out by the Western Bulldogs. “It’s so surreal,” she said. “I can’t believe I just got drafted to the Bulldogs. “I’m so happy. “I can’t explain the feeling.” Isabella Grant is another Western Jets player who landed at the Bulldogs. Grant, a strong marking forward who also made the NAB League team of the year, became a Bulldog under the father-daughter rule. Cleo Saxon-Jones was selected by Richmond with pick 58. Lions go down to Tigers By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh Lions were made to pay for a below par performance in their Country Basketball League north-west clash on Saturday night. Having claimed their first win the previous week, the Lions were hoping to make it two in a row against the winless Kyneton Tigers. The Lions got an early lead, but scores were level at quarter-time. The Tigers skipped ahead in the second quarter and were able to stay in front the rest of the night. While the Lions were able to reduce the lead, it wasn’t enough, with Kyneton winning 81-73. Bacchus Marsh coach Jeff Feben said it was a tough night on the court. “We weren’t as ready to play as they were,” he said. “We couldn’t find our game, we had low energy and our intensity was off. “We got the lead early and they kept coming at us. It was never substantial. “It’s a disappointing performance that’s for sure.” Just two players scored double figures for the Lions. Billy Feben top scored with 29 points, but his father said it wasn’t one of his best games. Max Beaumont, who scored 16 points, was the only other player in double figures. The loss compounded a bad week for the side injury-wise. Jordan Kirk hurt his ankle at training, while Jason Christian has spent half the week in bed sick. Matt Parker missed the game after hurting his ankle, with Sam Byron coming into the side to replace him. Byron scored eight points on debut. It’s been a mixed start to the season for the Lions in a new division. They sit 1-2 and are yet to be convincing in any of their games. “I said to the boys after the game that we’re not a team that gets up and about in warm-up,” Jeff Feben said. “We don’t know what to expect when they step onto the court.” The Lions travel to Bendigo this weekend, looking for their first road win of the season. Bendigo has been one of the form teams in the early rounds. Feben said they would love to enter their first bye at 2-2, with the week off to come at a good time with all their injuries. “We would have liked to have locked that away [Kyneton] before we played Bendigo,”

Feben said. “We have things to work through and hopefully we’ll hit the training track hard on Thursday. “Hopefully we’ll be better against Bendigo. “We need to beat Bendigo to be 2-2 at the
break. Bendigo lost to Maryborough and they will be looking to get the win back. “It should be a good game. “It would be nice to get back on the winners’ list before the break.”
Melton had to settle for a draw after a rain-affected match against Mt Waverley in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west on Saturday. In the end, the draw was a good result for the Lions, who were staring down the path of defeat. After a poor day one, the Lions had a big task to bowl Mt Waverley out cheaply. The Lions made just 136 on day one, with just two players scoring double figures. Mt Waverley resumed at 1-3, needing 134 on day two for victory. There wasn’t much action on day two, with rain causing players to come on and off the ground for a second straight week. Mt Waverley looked on track for victory at 3-60 off just 30 overs. But that would be the final score, with the game ending in a draw. Of the seven matches played in the east-west competition, four of them ended in weather affected draws. In the finished games, Williamstown came up with the win against Box Hill, Altona won a high-scoring match against Endeavour Hills and Noble Park was easily accounted for by Yarraville. Melton is again at home this week, facing Box Hill in a one-dayer. Melton’s second side beat Mt Waverley. The Lions made 4-193 in reply to Mt Waverley’s 187. Their third XI lost to Altona. Western United fails to fire in frustrating loss Western United lacked the discipline and polish that it displayed in its first two A-League games and paid a heavy price with a 2-1 loss to a slicker 10-man Melbourne City in the derby at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong on Sunday night. United trailed by a goal at the break after a disappointing first half, but the Mark Rudan-coached side found a way back into the contest in the 66th minute when prolific striker Besart Berisha converted the penalty he drew following a harsh challenge from City defender Harrison Delbridge, who saw yellow for a second time and was given his marching orders. If United got the impression that it would be a little more comfortable playing with the man advantage, it proved a false dawn as Melbourne City found a winner through in-form striker Jamie Maclaren in the 85th minute. Maclaren, who finished with a double, was the difference between the two sides. Western United centre-back Andrew Durante described the loss as frustrating after his side had worked hard to get back into the contest and created the better chances in the second half.

Royals in thrilling win By Tara Murray Melton South Royals bowler James Robertson delivered when it was needed, as the Royals won a thriller against Sunshine YCW in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 5 Russell Pollock Shield. The match came down to the final ball, with the YCW’s needing two runs off the final ball for the win. Robertson was tasked with bowling the final over and he produced the perfect final ball. The ball knocked out middle stump to see the Royals hold on for victory. Royals captain-coach Matt Kozole said it was a nervous final few overs. “It’s the first time I’ve been in that position as a captain,” he said. “They needed 22 off 18 balls and then needed two off the final ball for a win, or one for the draw. “I said to him [Robertson] aim for the bottom of middle stump and don’t worry about what the batsman and what he’s doing. “He bowled their number eight.” Earlier in the day, the Royals made 136 in a shortened innings due to rain. Kozole said they were on and off throughout the innings. “We started half an hour late,” he said. “We were 3-40 off after about 15 overs. After you lose a half hour of play, you start to lose overs. “We decided to make it a 30 over game. Rain played havoc across the Gisborne and District Cricket McIntyre Cup competition for a second straight week. Just one match was completed, with Gisborne getting the win against Riddell, with the other three matches ending in draws. Bacchus Marsh made 2-183 against St Anthony’s, with the Saints 2-53 in reply. Diggers Rest Bulla made 4-181 against Woodend. Woodend was 0-11 when play ended. In the Jensen Shield, Aintree beat Eynesbury.
Ballarat CA
Darley had to sit on the sidelines on Saturday as rain prevented play in day one of its match against Naps-Sebas in the Ballarat Cricket Association. It was one of two matches not to get underway. Those two matches will now be one-day matches. Buninyong was the big winner, claiming first innings points against Ballarat-Redan.

Bacchus Marsh’s undefeated run continues in Bowls Victoria pennant, division 2, section 1. In a close match all day, Bacchus Marsh got the win against Hoppers, 71 (15)-65 (3). Phil Minniti and Daniel Willis were the winning skips for Bacchus Marsh. Bacchus Marsh sits second, three points behind Port Melbourne. Melton lost to Deer Park, 84 (16)-65 (2). Alan Thistlethwaite was the winning skip for Melton, which sits seventh after four rounds.

imports last season and it worked really well.” Kozole said they were hoping the addition of their two imports would help them bridge the gap with the top four. The Royals finished seventh last season, but threw away wins against both the eventual grand finalists. “We probably should have been in the top four,” he said. “It’s my third year at the club and we’ve always gone into the season thinking we have a strong side. “Last year and the year before we lost games we should have won. Hopefully those games go our way this year.”
Caroline Springs remains undefeated in the Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket Competition north-west B T20. On Sunday, the Falcons accounted for Geelong. Batting first, Geelong made 1-97 from its overs, with the Falcons making 5-102 in reply. Carol Williamson made her first half century, finishing 50 not out. Melton Centrals had a win against Coburg, while St Anthonys defeated Greenvale Kangaroos.
