A celebration for the ages Melton’s older residents are preparing to take centre stage, with the annual Senior’s Festival set to take over next month. The festival runs from October 3 to 31, and will involve a number of prominent events to celebrate the role of seniors within the community. There will be engaging presentations on aged care, Australian history, and birds and wildlife, as well as a number of other educational activities and entertainment. If you enjoy music and feel like dancing, there’s a Crooners Concert in Burnside, a Beatles Concert in Melton and other musical performances at Melton and Caroline Springs libraries. Tributes for former mayor By Ewen McRae The Moorabool community is in mourning, following the death of councillor Pat Toohey last week. Cr Toohey had been unwell for several months, and died on September 18. He had served on the council since 2004, including two terms as mayor. A statement from the council last week said Cr Toohey would be remembered as a tireless advocate for his community. “He was a strong advocate for the Moorabool community and worked tirelessly for the benefit of our people,” the statement said. “He represented his community on
numerous committees in his 15 years as a councillor. In recent times he was on the Greendale Recreation Reserve Committee of Management, Concerned Councils for the Moorabool River Flows and Environment, Rural Councils Victoria, and the Economic Development Taskforce Advisory Committee. “In previous years he served on many other committees including the Municipal Association of Victoria’s Windfarm Working Group, the Western Highway Action Committee, the Section 86 Rural Growth Committee and the Rural Advisory Committee. “Councillors and staff at Moorabool Shire Council will miss Cr Toohey’s passion and dedication to his job. We extend our deepest
sympathy to his wife Loretta and his entire family.” Some of Cr Toohey’s proudest achievements came during his two terms as mayor, 2009-10 and 2012-13, including touring local schools and businesses with Victorian Governor Professor David de Krester, and accepting an award from the Local Government sector at the Resilient Australia Awards in 2013, for conducting the Blackwood Evacuation Exercise. A condolence book will be made available at the council’s Ballan office for those who wish to write a message for Cr Toohey’s family. The Victorian Electoral Commission will hold a countback in the coming weeks to fill the vacancy in the Woodlands ward.

Sikh temple bid fails again By Ewen McRae A push to reconsider a planning application for a Sikh temple in Melton South has failed. At its August meeting, Melton council knocked back an application for the temple, due to its location within a ‘green wedge zone’. The council maintained its position at a meeting last week when a rescission motion failed to gain support. The proposed temple was to be built on a five-hectare site on Holden Road, Melton South, and was planned as an off-shoot of a

larger temple in Craigieburn. The proposed site of the temple lies within a green wedge zone, which places an emphasis on preserving the area for agricultural uses. More than a dozen questions about the refusal were raised by the public during last
week’s meeting and Cr Steve Abboushi asked for the council to re-consider its decision. “There have been lots of letters of support from within the City of Melton and beyond on this project,” Cr Abboushi said. “The City of Melton prides itself on being an inclusive community where everyone belongs, and we have an opportunity here to provide a small retreat place of worship for a very small number of people of this Sikh community. “I stand with the applicant on this matter.” Councillor Kathy Majdlik said the green wedge zone had to be respected when
considering the site of the temple. “The current residents who have purchased in this area, the residents that are there every single day, have purchased there for a particular lifestyle,” Cr Majdlik said. “The area is characterised by a mixture of rural living and farming activities. It is a quiet and peaceful setting, and having people coming and going constantly does not protect current residents.” The rescission motion was defeated seven votes to two, with Cr Abboushi and mayor Bob Turner the only ones in favour.
Police on the trail of riders Trail bike riders and four-wheel drivers were in the spotlight as part of a police operation around Ballan and Trentham at the weekend. Operation Dorset focused on the Lerderderg State Park and Wombat State Forest, following similar successful operations in the area earlier this year. Victoria Police uniform and Highway Patrol officers joined forces with Parks Victoria and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning for the operation. Sergeant Michael Kearnes said trail bike riders and four-wheel drivers make up nearly 20 per cent of all serious injuries in these regional areas. He said Lerderderg and Wombat park attracted large numbers of recreational motorcyclists and four-wheel enthusiasts because of the area’s challenging terrain and it’s proximity to Melbourne. “We’re talking mostly about men, over 45 years of age who are licensed and registered owners of trail bikes and four-wheel drive vehicles, not random drivers,” Sergeant Kearnes said. “We’ve discovered that not only are these recreational trail-bike riders putting themselves in positions beyond their ability, but in locations beyond the capacity of their vehicles. “Our message to park users and recreational riders is please be safe. “We’re aiming to educate all drivers about safety and to ensure they comply with the rules and regulations of these state forests and parks.”
Cricketer on the rise A Caroline Springs all-rounder is shaping up to be a name to watch in the future. Jackson Martin has been selected to represent Victoria in the 12-and-under school boys cricket team, which will compete for the national championship in Adelaide this November. To make the squad, Jackson had to go through six months of trials which were held across 17 regions and had more than 1000 children participate. Jackson said it was a shock when he got the call-up. “Dad told me I’d been selected and I didn’t know what to say, I was very excited and a little overwhelmed,” Jackson said. “It’s definitely the highlight of my cricketing career so far.” Making the achievement even more remarkable is the fact that at just 10 years of age, Jackson is the youngest person ever to be selected to play for a Victorian 12-and-under side. He credits practice and his father’s coaching for much of his success. “My dad is my coach, so I’ve had a bat or ball in my hand for most of my life,” he said. “We have a little net in the backyard and I spend hours each night out there practising. “If I’m not using the net, I’m throwing a ball up against the wall and hitting it.” While Jackson is a talented left arm off-spin bowler, he says he prefers batting. “I definitely enjoy batting more, I move around the order a bit, but I really enjoy opening the batting.”

Childcare centre gets green light By Ewen McRae A new childcare centre is set to be built in Melton, despite concerns about congestion at its Coburns Road site. Melton council last week approved a planning permit for a two-storey centre, able to accommodate 146 children, on the corner of Coburns Road and High Street, Melton. Councillors had previously raised concerns about the low number of on-site parking at the centre, and problems with congestion in the surrounding area, which includes Melton

- Cr Michelle Mendes Secondary College and Melton Specialist School. Councillor Michelle Mendes voiced these concerns again at last week’s council meeting, but was the only councillor to vote against the planning application.
“Coburns Road is going to get busier and busier over the coming years, with the traffic affecting right down into other parts of Melton,” Cr Mendes said. “I’m genuinely concerned that we are providing childcare for 147 places, you tell me if the City of Melton requires a childcare service of 147 places? “With 147 children, how many cars are we going to have on those streets at any one time?” Councillor Yvonne Sebire said the growth of the region made more childcare services a clear choice.
“I feel that the applicant has addressed our concerns and done their best to change the car parking situation,” she said. “Given the growth in the area, I think it is prudent to have another childcare centre.” Councillor Ken Hardy said congestion around the site could be reviewed over time. “The traffic management plan can be, and will be, reviewed if it is necessary,” he said. “I’m expecting a reasonable proprietor of a childcare to manage those inflows of traffic.” The centre was approved by eight votes to one.
Greening the west The Melton West environment is set to change significantly in the coming years, with the transformation of Arnolds Creek well underway. The Melbourne Water project will remove 1.4 kilometres of concrete channel and stormwater pipe to create a natural waterway, while the addition of more than 200,000 native plants will help create a vibrant green space. Melbourne Water integrated planning manager Kate Nagato said the project would transform the area, giving a new green space for residents to enjoy together. “This project gives us an opportunity to turn what is a river underground, and a concrete drain, back into a waterway that people can connect with,” Ms Nagato said. “It will be a place where we can bring our children and connect with the waterway, experience it … and turn this into a
parkland with proper facilities for the community. “It brings the biodiversity back, and it’s a really exciting opportunity to completely transform this area.” The project will cost $8.3 million, with Melton council contributing $420,000. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the finished park would provide a perfect meeting place for families and community groups. “Council is proud of it’s parks, open spaces and waterways, and we really appreciate the significant contribution made by Melbourne Water,” Cr Turner said. “The communities voice has been heard, and the feedback received has influenced the final design of the park. I look forward to seeing locals enjoying the sights and sounds of the new natural environment.” Ewen McRae

Drugs charges
Charges have been laid against two Caroline Springs men and a man from Hillside, following a series of arrests on September 12. A 27-year-old Caroline Springs man was charged with trafficking a drug of dependence, knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime, and 16 drug importation charges. A 25-year-old Caroline Springs woman was charged with trafficking a drug of dependence and knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime and a 30-year-old Hillside man was charged with trafficking a drug of dependence and two counts of importing a marketable quantity of border controlled drugs. They have all been remanded in custody and will appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on January 31.

PETstock Melton is running discounted microchipping sessions on October 19, continuing a four year initiative that focuses on responsible pet ownership. Microchipping during the sessions will cost $10, instead of the usual $80. The Country Fire Authority is asking people to prepare properties as the state moves towards a fire season that in some areas will be more severe than normal. Once the fire danger period starts, the window to conduct burn-offs without a permit is closed. The CFA said while the fire danger in Melton and Moorabool is expected to be consistent with recent years, residents should remain vigilant and prepare their homes for the summer months.

Goldfields footy scores funding By Ewen McRae AFL Goldfields will be the biggest winner from a recent funding announcement, which removes a number of fees and increases investment in regional football clubs. The AFL and the state government last week announced an $18 million package to boost regional football across the next three seasons, and also removed affiliation fees, umpire registration fees, and reduced the cost of apparel. The move will see AFL Goldfields – which
includes the Ballarat Football Netball League and the Riddell District Football Netball League – and their clubs save $471,097, the highest amount of any regional football organisation. The AFL made the announcement at Bacchus Marsh Football Club on September 17, with league chief executive Gillon McLachlan re-enforcing the importance of local clubs to the AFL. “Local football clubs are often the heart of local communities, especially here in Victoria.” Mr McLachlan said.
“Community football is the cornerstone of our game and underpins all aspects of our national sport. “We understand the challenges faced in Victorian country football communities, especially with a change in demographics and community expectations, so it’s vital we continue to invest our support into volunteers, coaches, players, facilities and umpires who are the lifeblood of regional communities.” Funding will also be focused on growing the next generation of players, umpires and coaches with $330,000 dedicated to introducing
“Village Hubs” which will be launched in select regions to align schools, clubs and AFL clubs. Acting AFL Goldfields regional general manager Simon Dwyer was elated by the announcement. “It’s an extremely exciting announcement from the AFL, offering clubs immediate financial relief … and also providing greater resources to assist club volunteers,” Mr Dwyer said. “Initiatives like this will go a long way in supporting the sustainability of community football throughout our region.”
Change for the better Caroline Springs Football Club’s facelift is complete, following the opening of female-friendly changerooms last week. The upgrades follow a joint investment from Melton council and the state government, with representatives from both on hand for the official opening on September 18. Club president Terry Azzopardi said the addition of women’s teams, and the subsequent new changerooms, had transformed the club for the better. “The growth in the club has been through the women’s side of it,“ Mr Azzopardi said. “These changerooms just complete the footy club. When you’ve got women and men playing on the same days it’s just nice for them to have their own space, making it easier to manage and also just making everyone feel welcome at the club. “We’ve got 120 women and girls playing at the club now, and it’s changed the dynamics of
the club for the better.” Melton council contributed $465,700 towards the upgrades, with the state government adding $500,000. Melton mayor Bob Turner said he was proud to see local facilities helping female athletes pursue their dreams. “It’s fantastic to open another facility that puts women and girls on an equal playing field at local sports clubs,” Cr Turner said. “There are so many talented and ambitious female athletes in the City of Melton, and we want to ensure we have the facilities to support them and their sporting goals.” Ewen McRae

Did you know that the City of Melton is home to 170 playgrounds, kilometres of walking and cycling trails and its own botanic garden? In a widespread City like ours, there are so many hidden outdoor gems to explore.
It’s hard to believe, but Council is already starting its 2020/2021 budgeting process; kicking things off early so that residents have plenty of time to share their ideas about what projects they think should be included in next year’s budget.
It’s your chance to tell us what you think should be included in the Budget, and put your project on our radar.
We’re keen to hear from community and sporting groups, not-for-profit organisations and individuals who have a great idea for a project that would benefit the residents of our City.
Held throughout October, the Festival offers a range of activities suited to every interest and skill level.
You can submit your idea to Council at melton.vic.gov.au/budgetinput until 5pm, Monday 30 September.
If you’re looking for big and exciting play equipment like tall towers and spiral slides, visit Navan Park in Harkness, or Frontier Park in Aintree where you’ll also find a water play area and rope climbing.
Submitters also have the option to present their ideas to Council in person, so be sure to indicate this when making your submission online. Engagement sessions will be held on 8 October (Melton) and 9 October (Caroline Springs).
For slides that will appeal to smaller kids, as well as a nest swing, check out Allenby Reserve in Hillside, which also features a sandpit area, or Bridge Road Playspace in Strathtulloh which has plenty of space to explore.

Climbing equipment is a feature at Burnside Heights Recreation Reserve and Bloomdale Reserve in Diggers Rest – both with a big rope climbing structure and, at Bloomdale, a mini rock wall feature too! Around Lake Caroline you’ll also find climbing features and a slide, as well table tennis and exercise equipment. Some the City’s much-loved tracks include the Botanic Trail in Melton where you’ll see the stunning plantings of Melton Botanic Garden and the Tenterfield Drive Track which will lead you on a scenic route to the park. Other popular tracks include the Kororoit Creek Trail in Caroline Springs which will take you along the creek to a bushland setting and the Toolern Creek Trail in Strathtulloh which features a number of significant trees. Enjoy the diverse flora and fauna from all over the world and spot the many creatures – particularly birds, reptiles and insects – that call it home. Cr Goran Kesic With the worst of the winter chill behind us, it’s nice to see residents getting out and about, enjoying the spring sunshine, once again. Council is committed to creating beautiful open spaces where residents can walk, exercise and play, and one of our most iconic spots is Lake Caroline, in the heart of our community. The parks and reserves surrounding the lake have been classified high profile sites, which means daily servicing, weeding, leaf collection, and litter removal all the way to the water’s edge. We also clean the lake twice a month, removing rubbish, weeds and debris that may be in the water. Lake Caroline is the perfect location to take time out and connect with family, friends and neighbours, and with the new lights lining the path around the lake, it’s a safe and welcoming place, day or night.
Council continues to advocate on behalf of the community for improvements to roads in the City. In particular, we’re calling on the State Government to declare the Palmers Road Corridor (including Westwood Drive), a State road due to its strategic importance; and the State and Federal Governments to upgrade Western Highway to an urban freeway standard, between Melton and Caroline Springs. These roads are critical infrastructure links straining under the congestion of these high growth areas. They need immediate attention to help facilitate the safe and efficient movement of people and freight across our City. SPORT Fighting Lions ready to have another crack Bacchus Marsh Lions are hoping to build on a successful debut season in the Country Basketball League. The Lions exceeded all expectations last season to make the south-west grand final. While they fell short to a powerhouse Mt Gambier Lakers side, the players and coaching panel know it’s a good starting point. Co-coach Jeff Feben said they were confident heading into this season. The side has kept the same coaching panel and had minimal player changes. This time they will play in the north west division, as the competition tries to even out the divisions. “We only have one expectation, and that’s to win it,” Feben said. “Last year it was to make finals and we made the grand final. “We feel more comfortable going into the competition this year. We haven’t played in this conference before and haven’t seen most of the teams. But we believe that our conference last
season was a strong conference. Every season is different.” In a positive sign that the side is having an impact locally, the Lions had good numbers at tryouts. They settled on a squad of 16 and a development player from their under-18s. “We had good numbers interested at the tryouts and there’s some new faces,” Feben said. “We’ve got three or four news guys who weren’t in the team last season. “Daniel Jackson and Diquan Williams aren’t suiting up, but we’ve been able to replace them.” Feben said the core group had returned and there had been some great intensity at training. Billy Feben, who was co-division most valuable player and defensive player last season, and his partner in crime Jordan Kirk, are expected to be key planks in the side. Jason Christian also returns, while Max Beaumont is expected to take the next step. Beaumont made a name for himself last
season playing for Melton Thoroughbreds in Big V youth league – he averaged nearly 19 points, the third most in his division. “He had a pretty solid season,” Jeff Feben said of Beaumont. “He’s come back with a lot of confidence which is great for us.” Sam Byron, who has previously played with Melton, gives the Lions a third centre and a bit more flexibility. Matt Parker is expected to fill the role left vacant by Jackson. The new season starts on October 12 against Maryborough Blazers. Other teams in this conference are Mildura Heat, Bendigo Braves, Kyneton Tigers, Echuca Pirates and Swan Hill Flyers. Tara Murray Max Beaumont is again expected to be a key for the Bacchus Marsh Lions. (Shawn Smits)
Import becomes coach By Tara Murray Melton Thoroughbreds import Chris Johnson is stepping up to take on the coaching role for next year’s Big V men’s division 2 season. Johnson had already re-signed to play on with the Thoroughbreds, and last week the club announced he would be playing coach for the next two seasons. Johnson, who starred on court this year, said it was something that he hadn’t been expecting, but he was excited by the challenge. “I thought they would find someone to come and coach the side next season,” he said. “When I found out they were having trouble filling the role, I thought I would put my hand up about the head coaching role and see what happens.” Johnson said he had never coached at this level before, so it would be a new experience for him. Besides helping out with juniors, his only other coaching experience was back in college. Johnson will have to return to America in the short term to sort out his visa, but said he would have a good team in Australia supporting him. He admits there will be some challenges being both a player and coach. “There’s a lot of changes and a lot more responsibility for me,” he said. “It’s a good experience for me and the club. “I will have to go back home, but I’ll still keep in contact here and keep everything going. “I’ll pick up when I return.” The Thoroughbreds will hold two tryouts over the next two weeks, to get the base of the team selected before Johnson heads back to America. He said they might have a third tryout in January when he returns to Australia, if needed. Johnson said he already knows that there will be a few changes to the side that missed finals this year. He said it would likely be a new-look playing group and they would try and change the culture within the club. He will also trying to give the youth league players some more opportunities. Josh Crowe has again been appointed youth league coach and the two will work closely together. “Some guys I’ve been talking to are keen to try out and see how it goes,” Johnson said. Diggers Rest promises big things Diggers Rest is hoping to bounce back in the Central Highlands Bowls Division’s second grade. Diggers Rest missed finals after a tough back end of last season, but is confident it will be in contention again. Diggers Rest president Bill Deeble said they would again field sides in division 2 and 3. “We had made finals the last few years, but we fell over in the last three to four weeks of the season,” he said. “We’ve got high hopes to play finals and maybe even push for the division 2 grand final,” Deeble said. “In division 3, it makes it hard with different players each week.” The division 3 side finished 10th last season. Next season the club will also have a midweek side compete in division 3. Deeble said they were looking for players for all three sides. He said because the club was outside of town, many new people to the area didn’t know they were there. “I think we’ve got a couple of new players, but we’re trying to get the word across to the people in the new estates. “If there’s any new players or ex-players that want somewhere to go, we’re keen for them to come down.” The club also has barefoot bowls every Friday night. The club will have an open day for anyone interested in having a go. The open day is on October 5 from 12.30pm, with the opportunity to bowl and meet some new people. The CHBD season starts on October 12, with the midweek competition starting the following Tuesday. Meanwhile, Bacchus Marsh has moved its top side to the Bowls Victoria pennant competition. Bacchus Marsh will play in division 2, section 1, the same section as Melton’s top side. Bacchus Marsh’s other sides will stay in the CHBD.

Centrals come together to raise money for charity Melton Centrals players new and old took to the field for a good cause on Saturday. The club’s women’s side had a match between current and past players, the OG vs NE Centrals Legends match, to raise money for three different charities. There was plenty of interest in the match between the original gang and the new era, prompting the Centrals men’s to get in on the action and set up their own match as a curtain-raiser. Speaking before the match, Jay Martin said there was plenty of anticipation ahead of the game. The charity day included the two matches, raffles, a longest kicking competition and other fundraisers, to raise money for Beyond Blue, multiple sclerosis and the Peter Mac foundation. Plenty of people put their hands up to volunteer and help make the day a success. The match was named the Sandy Crisp Memorial Match in honour of a volunteer who helped the club over many years. Crisp’s daughter Tara Crisp is still playing there. “One of the old girls thought it up,” Martin

Lions are ready to roar By Tara Murray Darley is confident it has the right people in the right places to bring it back to the Ballarat Cricket Association finals. After a disappointing 2018-19 season, the Lions have been busy behind the scenes to try and get things back on track. New Lions coach Brian Wheelahan said the players had bought in to what they were trying to achieve. “We have been going since the end of July,” he said. “We’re excited to get the season under way. We’ve had terrific numbers, which we’re pretty rapt with, and we’re looking at having a fifth XI. It typifies the strength of the club at the moment. “We’ve set standards for both at training and on ground and the boys are doing that and making my job easier.” Wheelahan, who was assistant coach last season, said they had added depth to the top two sides. The two big early signings were Anthony Taylor and Madushanka Ekanyaka. Taylor comes across from Napoleans Sebastopol and is a wicketkeeper batsman who has played against the Lions in recent years. Ekanyaka has dominated in recent years for Bacchus Marsh in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association and has been their leading wicket taker on multiple occasions. Englishman Harry Killoran returns to the club for a second stint, having played with the club in 2015-16. The all rounder is expected to add some flexibility. Ashley Appleby and Rahmatullah Khwaja have both come across from Werribee Centrals, while Hayden Jamieson and Jake Wilkie both return to the club having not played the past couple of seasons. Big-hitting West Indian Danza Hyatt is also returning. Wheelahan said they were happy with where things were sitting. “We’ll have a balance of experience and the up-and-coming kids,” he said. “There will be a filtering of kids through the lower grades.” Joel Cadman, who played in the first XI last season is expected to take the next step and is likely to bat in the top four come round one. Ryan Densley, James Martindale and Rockey Hoey are three up-and-coming players to keep an eye on. Wheelahan said they were hoping they wouldn’t have the visa issues of last year, which affected their start to the season. “Last year was super disappointing and we couldn’t get going for the first month,” he said.

Melton and Bacchus Marsh fell short of premiership glory in the Ballarat Netball League grand final day on Saturday. Melton played off in the first grand final of the day, in the E-grade competition. The Bloods went down to Ballarat 21-15. In the D-grade grand final, Bacchus Marsh lost to East Point 21-18. Bacchus Marsh’s Sarah Bamford was named best on court. In the main matches, East Point and North Ballarat City both went back-to-back in the football and netball respectively.

Sunbury Lions’ Alik Magin claimed the Ballarat Football League’s Henderson Medal last Monday. Magin polled three votes in the final round to win by one vote from Sebastopol’s Tony Lockyer. Last year’s winner, Bacchus Marsh’s Daniel Burton, who was ineligible due to suspension, was the early leader and eventually polled the third most votes. Melton’s Shaun Campbell and Darley’s Nick Graham both finished in the top five. Campbell and Braeden Kight were named in the team of the year. Darley’s Darren Leonard, Shane Page and Brian Graham were named in the team, along with Bacchus Marsh’s Jake Owen.

It was a tough day for the Melton Wolves in the Gridiron Victoria men’s competition on Saturday. Facing the Monash Warriors, who were looking for their fifth win of the season, the Wolves were easily beaten, 59-18. The Wolves currently sit ninth with two wins. The Wolves have a bye this weekend.

Deer Park made history with a seventh straight Western Region Football League division 1 premiership. The Lions needed to do it the hard way, coming from behind against minor premiers Altona. Wheelahan said Alexander was having a season off. Wicketkeeper Dave Hoey is stepping back and will captain the third XI which will have a lot of kids in it. The Lions start their season on October 5 against East Ballarat at home.

By Lance Jenkinson Richmond is heading into the 2019 AFL grand final in irresistible form. The Tigers have bared their claws in the second half of the season to enter the last Saturday in September on a scorching hot 11-game winning streak. Not only have the Tigers won every game since their mid-season bye, they have been winning by hefty margins. Damien Hardwick’s yellow and black army are unbeaten since round 15 with an average winning margin of 34 points per game. During the 11-week block of matches, the Tigers have picked off wins over the rest of the top four sides, so their form line is strong. The Tigers have also beaten their grand final opponent comprehensively in that span of games. Richmond’s greatest strength is its ability to swarm a contested ball situation. The Tigers out-number at the contest and find a way to nudge the ball forward through slick hands or toe pokes forward. Captain Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin, Dion Prestia are the chief ball winners at the coal face, but the willingness of the TIgers flankers and wingmen to get involved overwhelms their opponents and that was evident in the second half of their come-from-behind win over Geelong Cats in the preliminary final at the MCG on Friday night.
Richmond is not a one-trick team though. How lucky are the Tigers to have two elite power forwards in Tom Lynch and Jack Riewoldt to kick to inside 50? Lynch was magnificent with five goals in the win over Geelong. Just as important to Richmond’s ability to put up a big score is its crumbing forwards and flankers, who are best in class. Shai Bolton, Jason Castagna, Daniel Rioli, Kane Lambert and Josh Caddy are the not-so-secret herbs and spices that give the Tigers forward line unpredictability. If there was one question mark over Richmond this season, it was how they would cope with the loss of defensive leader Alex Rance, who succumbed to a knee injury. It took a bit of time for the Tigers to adapt without Rance, but once they did, it has not proven to be too much of a burden. Dylan Grimes and David Astbury have been defensive pillars, while Nathan Broad and Nick Vlaustin have elevated their games. Bachar Houli is still super important for his rebound out of 50. Hunting its 12th AFL flag and second premiership in three years, Richmond will be heavily favoured to get the job done this Saturday.

Giants hold strong Greater Western Sydney’s remarkable finals run has continued, with the competition’s newest side through to its first AFL grand final. Having been the underdog throughout their three finals matches, the Giants have held strong when they needed to. While they will be on the road this weekend for a third straight week and Richmond will be clear favourites, you would be silly to write the Giants off. You only need to look back a few years and see what the Western Bulldogs did in 2016, to know it is possible. For the Giants, just three players – Heath Shaw, Matt De Boer and Shane Mumford – have played in a grand final. Saturday’s win against Collingwood at a packed MCG would have been the biggest crowd most of the group has played in front of. It’s good preparation for the Giants, with Richmond’s fans just as loud, if not louder than the Magpies. The Giants have shown plenty of nerve throughout the finals.
Zac Williams, who has dominated this season at half-back, showed he can be just as damaging in the middle. Josh Kelly has done Josh Kelly things, while Jeremy Cameron continues to kick goals. Matt De Boer is arguably the player of the finals, for his tagging role. Surely he gets Dustin Martin this week. Then there’s the likes of Lachie Keeffe, who was a surprise inclusion for the preliminary final and was one of the Giants best. The biggest question this week for the Giants will surround selection. Toby Greene is a definite in, returning from suspension. Can Lachie Whitfield play 10 or so days after having his appendix out? Does Stephen Coniglio, who hasn’t played since round 17, make a return for a knee injury? And how does captain Phil Davis pull up, having been in the wars in the preliminary final. Come Saturday, the Giants have the chance to write themselves in the history books.

holders, six bottle holders, four 12-volt power outlets and a useful under-floor storage compartment behind the third row of seats for extra security. Maximum towing capacity is 2700 kilograms with the V6 engine, but just 1650 kilograms for the hybrid.
Nissan Pathfinder has been on sale in Australia since 1987, long before the term SUV was invented and vehicles of its type were simply called 4WDs. The current (fourth-generation) Pathfinder arrived here in 2013 with smoother styling and aimed at the suburban market. Subsequent upgrades, the most recent of which was in 2019, have made it more refined and safer, and with technology added. Pathfinder comes with the choice of a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine or a supercharged 2.5-litre petrol/electric hybrid and either twoor four-wheel drive. The previous diesel alternative was dropped for the gen-four model. There are four equipment levels: ST, ST+, ST-L and Ti, with prices ranging from $43,390 for the Pathfinder ST V6 2WD through to $69,390 for the Ti Hybrid. In a sign of the times, the premium for equivalent hybrid models is a reasonable $3000.
Engines / transmissions
The petrol-only Pathfinders are powered by an upgraded 3.5-litre V6 engine, while the hybrid variants rely on a supercharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder unit plus a 15kW electric motor. Our test ST was fitted with the V6 petrol engine, which now delivers 202 kW of power and torque of 340 Nm at a very high 4800rpm. Its Direct Injection Gasoline system provides better wide-open throttle performance for improved fuel economy and lower emissions. All 2019 Pathfinder models are equipped with Nissan’s third-generation Xtronic continuously variable transmission with D-Step logic control, which simulates shifts in a stepped gearbox to suit drivers who won’t adapt to efficiency of CVT units.
Styling
While early Pathfinder 4WDs were quite square and rugged in appearance, the latest models have evolved into the typical, softer SUV style with smoother edges and sleeker profile. At the front is the distinctive Nissan design signature V-Motion grille and headlamps with boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights. Alloy wheels are 18-inch in the ST, ST+ and ST-L. The Ti steps up to 20-inch units.

Interior
At just over five metres in length and nearly two metres wide, Pathfinder is large enough to fit seven seats in comfort and still provide 453 litres with all seats in place. This can expand to 1354 litres with the third row folded and 2260 litres with second and third rows down.
Pathfinder has the Nissan EZ flex seating system, with second-row seats reclining and sliding to provide extra leg room to third-row occupants. Another plus for those in the third row is that the 50/50 split row seats can also be reclined. Interior storage is excellent, with 10 cup

Following the 2019 upgrade, all Pathfinder models come with Emergency Braking with forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and intelligent cruise control. Previous features include six airbags; stability and traction control; speed-sensitive door locking; tyre-pressure monitoring; rear cross traffic alert; blind spot monitoring; and IsoFix child
headphones, remote control and HDMI and USB ports for video playback.
Driving

Infotainment
Information display is through an embedded 8.0-inch colour touchscreen that is sharp and
easy to read. There’s Bluetooth phone and audio streaming with voice recognition that’s easy to pair. There are twin USB ports on the lower grades, three on the top-line Pathfinder Ti. The entry-level ST Pathfinder doesn’t come with satellite navigation, although it is standard on all higher-specced variants and also includes 3D mapping graphics. ST-L and Ti variants get a 13-speaker Bose premium audio system, while the Ti looks after rear seat passengers with a tri-zone entertainment system with wireless
With its large exterior dimensions, Pathfinder is a bit of a climb for smaller occupants, although the high driving position is a plus. It can be a bit of a handful to drive around town, especially in tight parking spaces. The extra power and torque is noticeable and the big SUV moves sharply from a standstill thanks to the use of a CVT automatic. On the open road, the added grunt together with firmer but not uncomfortable suspension and interior space make for a comfortable cruiser. Like most modern SUVs, Pathfinder is almost car-like in its refinement and general feel. Handling is reasonable, although with its relatively high centre of gravity, you can’t drive a Pathfinder as though it’s a car. Fuel consumption from the V6 Pathfinder is listed at 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres in 2WD models and 10.1 with 4WD. We averaged in the mid 11s in our ST 4WD.

Summing up
With more than three decades on the Australian market, Nissan Pathfinder is a tried and proven performer both on and off the road. Although it’s due for a new model, recent upgrades have added to its safety credentials and kept it up to date. Adding to the value equation, Nissan has gone with the industry flow by increasing both the time and distance of its standard warranty to five years and unlimited kilometres.
