High flyers on show Taking a break from their usual school production, Hillside’s Parkwood Green Primary School pupils are putting themselves on the state stage. A dozen pupils from the school will be part of the State School’s Spectacular later this month, joining with students from around Victoria for a performing arts showcase set to wow audiences. The school’s performing arts facilitator Jacqui Hermina said the pupils were excited to show their skills. “We wanted to offer a different performance opportunity for our students, and the kids had seen this on tv and loved how involved it is,” Ms Hermina said. “It’s a three hour show, and they do two shows on the day, so it’s a big effort for these students to throw themselves into it and get involved.” The school plans to return to its school production next year, but will likely make the school spectacular an ongoing offering for students as well. Student’s knives seized By Ewen McRae Police have confiscated three knives from students at two schools in recent weeks. In each case, a balisong – or butterfly knife with a blunt blade – was confiscated. The knives are commonly used in martial arts training and are often mistaken for toys, but are illegal to carry. Police attended a Caroline Springs school on August 28 after reports of a student carrying one of the knives.
That followed a similar incident at a St Albans school on August 21 in which two students were found to be carrying knives. On each occasion, the knives were surrendered and the students cautioned. Police said the students did not make any threats and no one was injured. Police would not confirm which schools were involved. Police said that while the knives often appeared to be harmless, they were classed as prohibited weapons in Victoria, making
it illegal to possess or carry them without the correct permits. Punishment for possession can range up to two years’ imprisonment. According to the most recent crime statistics, in the year to March, 2019, 405 weapons offences were recorded in Melton. That makes it the second worst year in the past 10 for that crime category, behind only the 449 offences recorded in 2016. Weapons offences have risen steadily in Melton in the past decade, from just 129 recorded in the year to March, 2010.

Our queen of the water By Ewen McRae Bacchus Marsh ski racer Lucy Savona is off to France this week to take part in the World Championships, but it has been far from an easy ride. The 24-year-old grew up on the water but it has taken her several years to realise her potential before eventually cracking the Australian team this year. “I started ski racing when I was about 15,” Savona said. “It’s a very family-oriented sport, and my family has a holiday house up at Echuca so we’d go there every year and ski, and it’s just always been a part of our family.

“[But] I wasn’t that good when I started, I definitely started at the bottom of the pack, but I never gave up and strove to get to where I am now. “It’s taken me nine years to get this far.” Savona said she raced for fun until she was 18. “I decided I really wanted to give this a crack … it’s taken six years from that point to making the team,” she said. “In 2015 I went for my first Worlds team, and I missed out … then in 2017 I made the team as a reserve and went to America, but basically just sat on the bench. “It was a good experience, but I wanted more.” Most ski races in Australia are run as a

race style – trying to complete a course in the quickest time, but the world championships are done on a circuit for 45 minutes, and whoever is in front when time expires is the winner. Savona said getting the chance to pull on the green and gold in her chosen sport was a dream come true. “I’m pretty proud and honoured to represent Australia,” she said. “The selection process is quite competitive in
Australia because it’s such a strong sport, so it was nine months of selection trials to get to this point. I’m just so excited to get over there and compete. “I’ve skiied every single weekend for almost a year now to get to this point so now I just want to get there.” Lucy will travel to Vichy in France with her dad, Anthony, who will drive the boat at the championships from September 7 to 15.

Big boost for Diggers Rest’s carols night Melton council will contribute $10,000 towards the Diggers Rest Carols by Candlelight. The funds will be an annual and recurrent contribution towards the event, which has received council funding for the past two years. Held at the Diggers Rest Primary School, the carols night attracted 500 attendees in 2017, and increased to 700 for last year’s event. The Diggers Rest Lions Club has taken on the management of the event. In July the club wrote to the mayor to request additional funding in order to further grow the event. The Lions Club’s letter stated the event is expected to cost about $13,000, and will continue to be held at the primary school. A notice of motion by councillor Michelle Mendes at last week’s council meeting requested $2500 to fund the event, however an amended motion committed to the increased cash. A Facebook post from the Lions Club thanked the council for the ongoing funding, and stated “the sponsorship of events such as our carols night are essential for facilitating a sense of pride and belonging amongst members of our community”. The Carols by Candlelight is scheduled for Wednesday, December 11. Ewen McRae

Shooting arrest
Police have charged a man in relation to a shooting in Hillside on June 12. A 53-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries after being found with a gunshot wound at an address in Bellevue Boulevard about 9.40am. A 51-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested on August 29 and charged with reckless conduct endangering serious injury and various offences. He has been remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on September 4.

Bowlers having a ball Prepare to be bowled over by Melton’s newest entertainment centre. Xplosions, a new ten-pin bowling complex in Bakery Square, opened last week. It features 10 lanes of bowling, more than 40 arcade games, pool tables, a bar, a kids’ party space, and has been the dream of Mark Mullins for the past two years. “It’s been an idea for a while, but we had to find the right space in the area,” Mr Mullins said. “The biggest complaint I hear from families in the area is that there’s nothing to do for kids, so I don’t think we could have picked a better area for this. “This building has been empty for four or five years, and it was a mess when we got in
here so it’s been a long road to get this all up and running.” The complex opened on August 28, with students from Melton Specialist School rolling the first balls down the lanes. Former AFL footballer Matthew Richardson and current players Jack Riewoldt, Clayton Oliver and Tom Liberatore came down to kick off the opening festivities. “We really want a good family atmosphere with everything we do,” Mr Mullins said. “We’ve still got space we’re not sure what to do with yet, maybe glow in the dark mini-golf, or laser tag, whatever people think will work. We’ll have a suggestion box and go from there.” Ewen McRae

Push to end trolley folly By Tate Papworth A Caroline Springs resident is on a one-man crusade to rid the suburb of dumped shopping trolleys. Gerald Evans says the problem has been an ongoing issue. “I went on a walk the other night and came across more than 20 dumped at various locations,” he said. “I’ve spoken to the manager at Coles and I was told that in the past the trolleys were all coin operated, whereas now they’re not.” Mr Evans said he was fed up with the lack of action. “I’ve spoken to the council about it and I get told to report the trolleys, but it’s just a continuing cycle. “We cop a bit of a bad reputation in Caroline Springs with crime and things of that nature, so I’m on a one-man crusade to make it a bit of a better place in this small way.” Melton council acting manager compliance Andrew Mason said the onus was on retailers to keep trolleys secure. “Council manages the Caroline Springs Lake and, at times, has to remove shopping trolleys … as part of regular maintenance and cleaning of the local area,” Mr Mason said. “Retailers are responsible for shopping trolleys and have reporting services that residents can use to have trolleys collected. “We respond to collection requests when a shopping trolley hasn’t been picked up by the retailer. In these cases, we impound the trolley and issue an infringement to the retailer. “We are working with the major retailers to ensure they are addressing this issue. “We also support the use of coin-based trolleys as a way of getting more people to return trolleys.”

Mr Mason encouraged all residents to report any dumped trolleys. “Council asks residents to report abandoned trolleys to retailers,” he said. “Keeping Caroline Springs clean and

Recycling set to return The state government has provided a $10 million loan to SKM’s receivers to help clean up thousands of tonnes of recycling stockpiled in warehouses around Melbourne. Moorabool was one of 33 Victorian councils left without a recycling provider when SKM was placed into administration last month, sending thousands of tonnes of recyclables to landfill. Last month, six large warehouses filled with stockpiled recycling waste were located across Derrimut, Sunshine, Laverton and Campbellfield. The government money will help SKM clean up the stockpiles and resume collecting recyclable waste. The clean-up began last week and the company is expected to resume processing waste within the next five weeks. Its Laverton site will be the first to return to operation. SKM’s collapse threw Victoria’s kerbside recycling collections into chaos with several councils, including Moorabool, forced to send thousands of tonnes of recycling to landfill. The loan comes on top of the government’s $6.6 million financial relief package handed out to councils directly affected by the closure of SKM. Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio said the kerbside recycling system is set to be overhauled. Tate Papworth

Creek friends find favour More than a decade of hard work from the Friends of Toolern Creek has been recognised, with the group making the finals of the Premier’s Sustainability Awards. The group, which has spent the past 15 years cleaning up the land around the creek and planting new trees, is in the running for a Parks Victoria Environmental Sustainability Award announced at a function next month. Group leader Lyn Holdsworth said it was a thrill to see all their efforts receiving attention at a state level. “We’ve been doing it for 15 years with locals, and schools and local companies helping to clean it up,” Ms Holdsworth said. “It was a bit of a disaster before we got down there, but we’ve just done it bit by bit, and with
everyone chipping in we’ve made a bit of a difference down there.” Ms Holdsworth said the transformation over the years had been staggering. “The weeds were the biggest issue when we first got down there, and the rubbish, because people used to use it as a tip,” she said. “But as it grew and we started planting, people stopped doing that and now it’s just little bits that flow in from up the creek. “We planted 10,000 plants last year, and we’re up to 4000 or 5000 this year, so we just love seeing all those trees and shrubs down there.” The Premier’s Sustainability Award winners will be announced on October 11. Killer sentenced for party brawl By Benita Kolovos/The Age Maybe someone spilt a drink, threw a glass or got shoved but none of it mattered much. For Deni Dimovski the party ended when a knife was thrust through his heart. The 32-year-old was stabbed twice with a kitchen knife by Milos Novakovic during a brawl at the Korzo Grill House restaurant in Caroline Springs in September 2017. As the night was winding up, Novakovic and some friends got into the fight with another group of men including Mr Dimovski, who was co-hosting a Balkan music event.
Victorian Supreme Court Justice Michael Croucher described the scenario as “mayhem” but said its cause was unclear. “It seems that the violence erupted over something as trivial as a spilled drink or a glass thrown, a dose of bad manners and far too much testosterone,” he said during sentencing. People were shoved, punched and put in headlocks, while furniture was knocked over and chairs and bottles were thrown before Novakovic and his mates were told to leave. On his way out, Novakovic kicked the door of the restaurant and yelled: “I’m gonna kill him”.
The group then broke into the restaurant through the kitchen, where Novakovic attacked Mr Dimovski until he was on the floor. He grabbed a kitchen knife off a bench and stabbed Mr Dimovski in the arm and, fatally, in the chest. Novakovic, 31, was arrested the next day trying to leave the country. On August 23, he was jailed for 20 and a half years with a minimum of 15 years. The court heard Serbian-born Novakovic came to Australia as a refugee having grown up in a war zone in Bosnia where his father had been killed in the fighting.
After arriving in Australia he became the man of the house, working from age 13 to support his family. Justice Croucher said Novakovic had shown remorse for his crimes and was unlikely to reoffend. Outside court, Mr Dimovski’s aunt Mary Dimcevska said while justice was served, nothing will bring back her nephew. “Their pain is never going to go away,” she said of the victim’s parents. In June, Novakovic’s friends Sasa and Milan Jovic were jailed for 18 months and 16 months respectively for their role in the brawl.
Characters come to life Rockbank Primary pupils showed their creative side last week as they bought their favourite book characters to life. As part of Book Week celebrations, pupils across all year levels dressed up as some of their favourite literary characters. Organising teacher Christine Niemiecki said it had been a fantastic celebration all week. “This year’s theme was ‘reading is my secret power’, so we spoke a lot this week about how important reading is in every day life,” Ms Niemiecki said. “So on top of our annual parade where the kids can show off their costumes to friends and family, there’s also an important message to get out to the students. “Reading as a language is just so powerful. So even if the students come from a home where reading isn’t taught as much, it’s important that they know just how vital to their future good reading skills are.”
A wide range of costumes were on show, including Dr Seuss, Scooby Doo, Batman and Toy Story characters. Ms Niemiecki said the event gets bigger and better every year. “We really love it when kids and parents put effort into finding a book character that they love,” she said. “It’s also great to see the families make their own costumes and do something together to bring the characters alive. “The whole school really embraces the importance of the week … teaching kids about reading and making sure they know just how important it is for their futures.” Ewen McRae Zakk, Kiarah, Charlotte, Brigid, Dylan, Lucy and Larraine in costume. Equality through cooking By Ewen McRae Fleeing her Iranian homeland and setting up life in Melbourne, Shahnaz Albokhalifeh is embracing her creative side. Ms Albokhalifeh grew up in Southern Iran, raising five children with her husband before she made the decision to pursue a better life in Australia. She said she decided to leave so her daughters could grow up in an equal society.

Looking back on life in southern Iran, Ms Albokhalifeh said females are typically expected to cook, clean and are under societal constraints to serve others in the confines of their homes, ultimately denied permission to venture outdoors without being accompanied by a male. Now settled in Woodlea estate in Rockbank, Ms Albokhalifeh is taking cooking classes with social enterprise Free to Feed, teaching locals how to cook the food of her homeland. “This is the first job that I’ve ever had, and I am 45 years of age,” she said. “Free to Feed has been that reassuring hand on my shoulder telling me that I belong, when my faith in myself has been fundamentally questioned and undermined throughout my life.” Ms Albokhalifeh is now a regular teacher with Free to Feed, sharing Persian-inspired dishes in her classes across Melbourne, and will lead one in Woodlea this week. life of an Iranian – always start off with Persian tea. This became customary in Ms Albokhalifeh’s homeland, as her father and grandfather told her, because guests had to be served something sweet when they arrived at a house, and often fruit and sugary snacks were unavailable.

Council slips down rankings Community satisfaction with Melton council’s performance has dropped in the past 12 months, according to a new survey. The annual community survey on a variety of council performance areas shows overall satisfaction with the council has slipped by 3.5 per cent in the past 12 months, with a score of 6.87 compared to last year’s score of 7.12. The score is considered in the ‘good’ range, compared to other councils. The survey found the most common issues were traffic management, with 25.4 per cent of respondents citing this as an issue. Safety, policing and crime-related issues were a concern for 11.4 per cent of respondents, almost double the metropolitan average of 6.3 per cent. However, the result was a significant drop in local concern – in 2017, 31.8 per cent of respondents raised these issues. More than 20 per cent of respondents this year said they felt unsafe in public areas at night. A council report about the survey stated while overall satisfaction was down, the results were still strong for the council. “The 2019 survey results indicate that council is performing comparatively well and in line with the metropolitan Melbourne and growth area councils’ averages,” the report stated. “This is following on from the unusually large increase in satisfaction recorded in 2018.” Ewen McRae

For a second successive year, Diggers Rest will have to play every week throughout the finals if it is to lift the Riddell District Football League premiership cup. The minor premiers had their first shot at earning a grand final spot on Saturday, but were overrun by Rupertswood in a qualifying final. The Burras led by 11 points at the last change, but were kept goalless in the last, losing 13.10 (88)-9.8 (62). Burras playing coach Jamie Lobb said they failed to make the most of chances earlier in the game. “They were a bit classier than us today, they got the job done in the end,” he said. “After the first five minutes we probably controlled a lot of the time up until three-quarter time. “We allowed them to get a couple of cheap ones and we didn’t hit the scoreboard enough when we got the chance.
“They got a couple of goals in a row and they got their confidence up and about and they’re hard to stop when they get that way. “We’ll learn from that and hopefully we’ll get another crack at them in two weeks.” After an even first half the Burras took control in the third quarter. They couldn’t get the margin out by more than two goals, keeping the Sharks in the game. It would prove costly. Thomas Taylor was the only Burra to kick multiple goals, finishing the game with three goals. Lobb said it was an even performance across the board. He said Cale Morton and Taylor Hine were their best two. “Apart from that, there wasn’t too many standouts,” he said. Lobb was upbeat about playing the preliminary final. The Burras will face Wallan on Saturday at Romsey Park.
Bears bow out winners By Tara Murray It might be season over for Burnside Heights, but the Bears will look back on the Essendon District Football League division 2 season as one where they have taken the next step. With everything in place off the field, the Bears started to show they deserved to be spoken about as a team to watch in division 2. They made their first finals series and went a step further, winning their first final. While a grand final spot was a step too far, the season has been a success, according to president Justin Peagram. “Regardless of the result, we set our sights on making finals and we did that and had a win,” Peagram said. “That’s a huge step. It allowed us to achieve what we wanted to achieve without over-performing.” It was a tough day on Saturday for the Bears in their preliminary final against Moonee Valley. The Fog got off to a good start and led by four goals at the first break. They maintained that margin in the second quarter. After half-time the margin blew out with the Fog winning 18.12 (120)-7.10 (52). Peagram said things just didn’t go their way. “At times when we were needing a run-on, we couldn’t get it,” he said. “Moonee Valley was good and nothing worked for us. “They had a fair bit of luck at the right points of the game. “We had passages we looked good, but we couldn’t hold tackles and things didn’t work for us.” Having lost two players with injury, including retiring ruckman Michael Wever, the Bears were down on rotations. They took the game on in the second half to try and get back into it, throwing structures out the window. However, as it often happens it went the other way, with the margin blowing out. Peagram said the group fought it out to the end and they were proud of them all. Vincent Angelone, who became the first Bears player to play 100 senior games at the club, kicked two goals. He was the only multiple goalkicker for the Bears. Kristian Rocci finished his year off strongly, having come back to the sport from basketball. “It’s do or die for us next week,” he said. “Our form off a bye or a week off has never been great. “It’s not the worst thing for us. When we won it last year, we went through the prelim. “Hopefully it’s just a repeat of that. “We’ll go out and have a crack at whoever we play and hopefully have another crack at Rupo.” The Burras will be hoping for ruckman Sean Egan to return. Egan, who has been battling a knee injury, played in the reserves semi-final on Sunday. Lobb said if he pulled up well from that, they would consider bringing him back in this week. The Burras reserves and under-19s both won their knockout semi-finals and will play in preliminary finals as well. Melton turns it around for a cracking win Melton pulled off a stunning comeback to beat the Sunbury Lions in a Ballarat Football League elimination final. For nearly three quarters, the Lions looked the likely winners and were 20 points up at the last break. Something clicked for the Bloods in the final quarter and they kicked six goals to one to snatch the win 11.11 (77)-9.11 (65). Melton coach Aaron Tymms said after the game he thought they may have been in a bit of trouble. A goal just before three-quarter time would prove vital. “At three-quarter time I thought we were almost done,” he said. “To bounce back like that was exceptional. “I thought we had a little bit of momentum [in the third] but they were able to keep pegging one back in the course of the quarter. “It was really important to get that goal and be within distance. One more we might have been out of reach.” The last quarter was all the Bloods – they dominated the contest and once they hit the front, there was no looking back. Tymms said the big difference was getting their hands on the ball. “We had only had 11 scoring shots in the entire three quarters and I think we had 12 in that last quarter,” he said. “Once we get on a roll the boys keep ticking on. “I had the shakes going half way through the last quarter.” Tymms said Lachie Walker was clearly their best in the win and Matt Denham also played well. Tymms said they should take confidence into the rest of the finals. Luck was on the side of the Bloods, who despite finishing fifth, have secured a double chance as the highest placed winner from the elimination finals. They now face East Point in a semi-final this week for a spot in the grand final. “There’s a little bit of stress off now, knowing it won’t be the end if something goes pear-shaped.” Darley’s season is over after losing to Redan. Titans prove their mettle

Bacchus Marsh’s season has come to an end in the Ballarat Netball League. Facing East Point in an elimination final, the Cobras trailed from early on, down by four goals at quarter-time. The margin was eight points at half-time and out to 16 at the last break. The Kangaroos kept going in the last quarter, winning 49-31. Ashlee Mitchell scored 19 goals for the Cobras and was the most accurate shooter on court. Defender Rebecca Power was named their best.
By Tara Murray The North Western Titans are through to the Geelong Baseball Association B-reserve grand final. The Titans entered the finals as favourites, having claimed the minor premiership. They lived up to expectations with a 7-3 win against Corio on Saturday at Macpherson Park. Danny Haymes got the Titans on the board in the opening innings. A poor third innings by the Titans kept Corio in the game, scoring three runs, but the Titans responded. Kyle Newman led the way on the mound and was backed up by Ryan Tompkins, who also scored a home run. Speaking before the match, Titans president Danny Haymes said it was exciting for the club. It’s the first time they’ve entered a team in the Geelong competition. “We’re more than happy, we’re stoked,” he said. “It’s been three years since we’ve made finals and since then there has been a massive change of culture and it’s been really good. “We go into every game confident and knowing if we execute our game plan, we can get it done. “We’ve really focused.” The Titans started the season in a lower grade before being promoted. Haymes said they had been told they would have been competitive in an even higher grade competition. The Titans will now have the weekend off before the grand final. The grand final will be played in Geelong. Haymes said they hoped the development they had made in the winter season would benefit both their men’s and women’s teams come the summer season.

AFL Goldfields
Melton Centrals’ season is over in the AFL Goldfields Women’s competition, but the team is proud as punch. Centrals took it up to Redan in a preliminary final on Sunday, with a close contest all day. Redan was leading by nine points when the game was halted with about 10 minutes to go when Centrals’ Natalie Edwards received a heavy knock and an ambulance was called.
