Wyndham Rotary Club. The project turns recycled plastic bottle caps into prosthetic arms and hands for children around the world. Envision Hands is aiming to collect one million bottle tops and turn them into 100 prosthetic hands and arms before the end of the year. The initiative, a world-first, involves the plastic from donated bottle caps being turned into material used to create parts for a
custom-made artificial limb, via a 3D printer. The Coca-Cola Foundation has provided Envision Hands with a grant to purchase a “Shruder”, a plastic shredding machine created by Plastic Collective, so they can shred the bottle tops. James’ mother Melissa Quinn said their family found out about the Envision Hands project after a breakfast lady from her son’s kindergarten contacted the project’s founder, Sean Teer, on their behalf. “Sean said that he and Joe (project co-ordinator Joe Ferlazzo) would love to meet all of us, measure James up for a prosthetic hand and we did just that,” she said. Mrs Quinn said that the Envision Hands
team had visited the kindergarten, and their family’s Melton home, to measure and fit James’ prosthetic. Mrs Quinn said James was “a massive superhero fan” and that he had described his Batman-inspired hand as “brilliant”. “James is such a smart, confident boy and we only want to see his confidence keep growing as he gets older,” she said. “We hope that by having this prosthetic it will allow him to stay confident and the cool factor of it being a superhero hand will help the way other kids interact with James as well.” Envision has set up webpage to raise funds. Uproar over plans to rezone park By Ewen McRae A proposal to re-zone a section of open parkland in Melton South to allow for community care accommodation is set to come to a head at next week’s council meeting. Melton council earlier this year received a request from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to rezone roughly one-third of the parkland at 3–13 McDonald Street, Melton South, to allow for the accommodation, with a final decision to made
following community consultation. The park is currently used as open recreation space, with a playground on the site removed several years ago. A concerned resident, who did not wish to be named, said the nearby residents were in uproar over the proposal. “Nobody here wants this land to go,” they said. “The land was vested to the council over 40 years ago, and now they’re looking at selling it for a profit. “My kids played in that park, my grand kids
play in that park, I can see kids playing in it now, so to say it doesn’t get used is just wrong.” Council chief executive Kelvin Tori said 13 community submissions had been received about the proposal, and would help inform council’s decision. “The proposal is to change about one third of the park from reserve status,” Mr Tori said. “This is the first stage in a statutory process required for a development proposed by the DHHS. Any changes to the planning zone
or consideration of a development proposal are subject to a separate process under the Planning and Environment Act. “The wide-ranging needs of Melton’s diverse community are very important to council and are a constant consideration in council’s decision-making.” While several community members asked for the decision to be delayed until the August council meeting in Melton, the matter will be on the agenda for the July 22 meeting at Burnside Community Centre.

Saddle up for a new type of therapy A horse walks into a tax office. It might be the start of a joke, but for Deb Pace it’s no laughing matter. Ms Pace took her horse into Tax Solutions in Bakery Square last week to promote better workplace mental health. Ms Pace runs Pacing Dynamics, and is about to start workshops on the Equine Effect, which works on long established research on animal therapy’s help with mental wellbeing. “The government has just released a paper on mental health in the workplace, and this is
about highlighting that locally,” Ms Pace said. “We run a program on mental health and positive culture in the workplace environment, and that helps everyone. “So we’re spreading awareness on equine assisted growth and learning, which is another form of animal therapy, and we’re spreading the word around Melton because even though we are based here there’s not much knowledge of what we do in the local community.” Ms Pace said working with horses to improve mental wellbeing had several positive benefits.
“While mental health is important for the big companies, it’s also important for the smaller businesses,” she said. “Equine therapy is a pretty unique experience, because the horses are so intuitive. “There’s lots of evidence around now that being emotionally strong gets you a lot further in the workplace, so investing in yourself is really important.” www.equineeffect.com
Melton police will be among the first in the state to receive new ballistic vests as part of a statewide rollout. The updated vests will help improve personal safety, comfort and mobility of police, while delivering a higher standard of ballistic and spike protection, and are part of a $41 million upgrade to police equipment by the state government. The vests are also lightweight, less bulky and have enhanced adjustability and thermal management to adapt to both warm and cold temperatures. Different configurations also allow the vests to be worn in both overt and covert scenarios. All uniform officers will be equipped with the new vests, along with Protective Services Officers, Police Custody Officers, Highway Patrol members, Crime Scene Services, investigators and the Mounted Branch. Police minister Lisa Neville said the new vests would help officers better serve the community. “This is about providing a safer working environment for our dedicated police officers, while giving them better access to state-of-the-art crime fighting equipment,” Ms Neville said. “We’ve already seen that the new vests support increased movement, improved access to equipment and are more comfortable to wear in a vehicle.” “The new vests will also support the ongoing rollout of body-worn cameras, with almost 4,500 cameras already deployed to officers.” Ewen McRae

Truganina fatal
A Rockbank woman has died following a single-vehicle crash in Truganina on July 7. It is understood the woman had been travelling in her vehicle along the Western Freeway when it veered off road and into a wire rope barrier about 5.45pm. The 35-year-old Rockbank woman was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital in a critical condition. She died in hospital on July 8. The exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined and the investigation is ongoing.

Melton will soon have a new learning and training hub, following the start of the next phase of construction of the new Melton Central Community Centre. Following a sod turning ceremony last week, the construction phase of the multi-million dollar redevelopment will begin in earnest ahead of an expected completion in August 2020. The $4.5 million purpose-built centre will be a hub for learning and training, employment pathways and health and wellbeing services such as migrant support and family violence support. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the centre would be an important addition to the community once completed. “I’m excited to see this project begin and I
look forward to this centre helping residents reach their potential and feel included and supported in their local community,” Cr Turner said. “This new facility will bring together a number of services and introduce a range of new services to meet Melton’s diverse needs.” The centre will have a particular focus on tailored services that will cater to Melton’s culturally and linguistically diverse communities. The Melton Central Community Centre redevelopment is a partnership project funded with $2 million from the State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund and a $2.5 million contribution from Council. Two men have been charged following a series of alleged burglaries at places of worship across Melbourne, including one in Rockbank. It’s alleged the burglaries occurred between March and July across Melbourne. A 28-year-old Deer Park man has been charged with 54 charges, including two counts of aggravated burglary, 23 counts of burglary and 22 counts of theft. An 18-year-old Sunshine man has been charged with six charges, including aggravated burglary, theft and bail offences. They will both face court at a later date.

Finding hidden treasure
Brigade needs new members
By Ewen McRae The secret history of a convict who married a beloved Melton icon has been penned, shedding new light on a famous name. Author John Watts launched his book Six Stolen Mugs last month, detailing the life of his ancestor William Rose Watts, who married Melton midwife Hannah ‘Grannie’ Watts more than 150 years ago. Hannah Watts is well known in Melton for establishing the first hospital in the area, where she delivered more than 400 babies between 1886 and 1921.

The connection of William to the famous Melton family was previously hidden for generations due to shame over the family’s convict history. It was uncovered when John researched his ancestry ahead of a family reunion. “Going back to my grandparents, they never acknowledged the convict history, because it was a thing to be ashamed of back then,” John said. “It’s certainly not now. In fact there’s people out there hunting through family histories trying to find convict ancestors.” William Watts was born in Essex in 1811, and was sentenced to 14 years transportation for stealing six ceramic mugs from his employer in his late teens. He arrived in Tasmania in 1831, where he worked for a man called Thomas Reibey. Thomas’s mother Mary Reibey now appears on

part of the family history and also the work that Hannah did in Melton,” John said. “It’s nice to know that there are people in your family that have done a lot of good things.” The book was launched at the Melton Library on July 5, with Hannah’s great-greatgranddaughter, Rebecca Hart – also now a midwife – speaking about the impact of her ancestor.

The Rowsley Fire Brigade is looking for new members, with a recruitment push over the winter months. The Brigade, which has suffered from a diminishing volunteer base over recent years, relies on volunteers to provide crucial services to the community during emergencies. Rowsley Brigade Captain Joseph Hammersley said the brigade is predominantly seeking active community members who can perform duties as firefighters after training appropriate to the role. “There’s more to volunteering with Rowsley Fire Brigade than just firefighting,” he said. “This brigade needs people who can assist with important community education programs, promotions and displays, fundraising and administrative activities. “All CFA volunteers receive nationallyaccredited training and develop skills that can be used outside CFA, including in the workplace or at home. “We need more community members to join so we can maintain our mission to protect lives and property now and into the future. Hospital delivers big baby boom By Ewen McRae Moorabool is in the midst of a baby boom, with a record number of births in the last financial year. Across the 2018-19 year, 408 babies were born in the shire, a new record high. It follows recent news from Melton last month, which is also in the midst of a baby boom, with up to 52 babies, the equivalent of more than two-and-a-half prep classes, born into the municipality each week.
Both municipalities are among the fastest growing areas in the country. Moorabool council congratulated all the families welcoming new babies. The council also reminded residents of their maternal and child health services, including a free service to children from birth to school age. The service provides support and advice on all areas of family health, child development, and parenting issues for parents and carers. Moorabool also offers a Breastfeeding

Support Service staffed by lactation consultants to support new mums with breastfeeding. Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Belinda Scott said while the birth rate continued to climb, they were well placed to deal with it.
“This fits in to our strategic understanding of the community which shows high growth in that 0-14 age group,” Ms Scott said. “Our services, without changing anything that we have today, can cope with up to 750 births. “We’re opening our special care nursery in a couple of weeks, which will mean more babies able to stay locally. “It means about another 100 women can birth with us, that we would otherwise have to send to Sunshine.”
Planting an idea of hope The new Melton Health and Community Services building continues to take shape, with the opening of a new indigenous garden last week. The garden, which is near the entrance to the building, was officially opened as part of NAIDOC Week celebrations with a smoking ceremony from local indigenous elders. Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Belinda Scott said the opening marked an important moment for the new building. “It was a really lovely smoking ceremony, truly moving,” Ms Scott said. “We had Wurundjeri elder Uncle Bill Nicholson there, and he told the most wonderful story and related it back to the local land we were standing on and explained the symbolism of the garden and the ceremony. “This was always part of the plan to have this garden at the centre, and we’ve been working with community groups to get this just right.” The garden features local plants donated by
Bunnings Melton, and there was extensive work done with the Kirrip Aboriginal Corporation on the project. Ms Scott said the garden went beyond plants and green spaces. “I got a lovely note from Sharon Sowter, the chairperson at Kirrip, saying it was great for us to make the health service such a welcoming and culturally sensitive space,” Ms Scott said. “Days like today really do go a long way towards that messaging to the community that we’re partnering with them in health, and committed to improving health outcomes for our indigenous community.” Ewen McRae

Health help is here A new way to improve mental health is coming to Melton, with two local organisations joining forces. Reclink and Grow have come together to provide valuable support in the community, helping with mental health recovery and personal growth. The new program helps those recovering from mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, panic attacks and low mood and as well as those struggling to cope with day to day living, and is open to all and free of charge. Grow field worker Julie-Anne van Tatenhove said the groups have been operating across Australia for more than 60 years. “The group members are there for one another,” she said.

Cr Sophie Ramsey Winter is bearing down on us with a vengeance now, so I hope everyone is keeping warm and avoiding that dreaded flu. I was thrilled to see that significant investment in sports infrastructure, and the increase of the Pensioner Rebate program, were included as part of Council’s expenditure in our 2019/2020 Budget. Investment in recreation, leisure and community facilities have been long-standing priorities for me, so it was especially pleasing to see the allocation of $15.3 million for key infrastructure projects, including $3 million for the construction of stage 1 of the Cobblebank Indoor Stadium— an initiative I put forward, and a vital project I’ve long advocated for. The multipurpose stadium which will include six highball courts and change rooms, as well as parking and

Formed in July 2018, by a small group of graduates, the MMG supports members through the promotion of mental and physical wellbeing within an environment of friendship and respect. Council waste in banned rubbish By James Massola, Chris Vedelago and Amilia Rosa/The Age Australian company Visy Recycling was behind the export of a container of plastic waste – including some from Melton council – that is regarded as toxic in Indonesia, according to documents seen by The Age and Sydney Morning Herald. The document shows the container was sent by Visy, one of the world’s biggest recycling companies, inspected in Melbourne on May 21, 2019, marked as “non-B3” mixed plastic
scrap – that is, non-toxic waste – weighing 13.7 tonnes. It was shipped to the Batu Ampar port in Batam where customs officials opened it and found it stinking and leaking black sludge and maggots. The recipient was intended to be local recycling firm Royal Citra Bersama. Separately, Indonesian customs officials in the country’s second largest city, Surabaya, have confirmed they are planning to send eight other containers of waste back to Australia. The Surabaya containers were supposed to only have paper in them, but instead they contain plastic as well, and were “mixed with
trash,” according to Narko, a spokesman for customs in Surabaya’s port of Tanjung Perak. They are also considered by Indonesia to contain waste designated “B3”. B3 is short for Bahan Berbahaya dan Beracun – hazardous and toxic materials. It is barred from entry to Indonesia. Photos of the interior of the shipping container showed Omo and Dynamo containers, Western Star butter, Greek Yoghurt and Streets Blue Ribbon tubs, Morning Fresh cleaning liquid, building products and dozens of car engine oil bottles.
There was also a recycling bin from the Melton City Council, with which Visy has a collection contract. City of Melton planning and development general manager Luke Shannon said the council was “aware that some of the city of Melton’s plastic recycling is sent overseas by our contractor, Visy”. Visy did not reply to multiple requests for comment on whether it knew if there was contaminated plastic in the container, whether it had inspected the plastic or if it was fit for shipping.

A new program that aims to help young locals get their careers moving is about to start in Melton. Run by Youth Now, the program is targeted at those aged 15 to 30 who are looking for work, or have drifted out of the education system, and will help them with their resumes or further education needs for their future. The program will run out of Lazy Moe’s from 2pm on Thursday afternoons, starting July 18. Youth Now training coordinator Tania Sacco said it would be an important resource for Melton’s youth. “We’re trying to keep our young people up to speed with the pace of technology and change, because education and employment in the area is well below the national average,” Ms Sacco said. “We want to invite young people who aren’t working to come along and we’ll review their job documents. We will tailor it to the

Springing into action The Spring Hills Football Club turned pink on Sunday night. Hosting its fifth annual Think Pink Foundation game day, the female sides ditched their regular uniform for pink attire, all in the name of raising funds to support women and men with breast cancer. Spring Hills Football Club vice president Tom Markovski said it’s an event that has grown over the years. “It started off when one of our committee members was diagnosed with breast cancer. “We’d donated as part of the club previously, but from there it progressed into Think Pink Day.” All money raised from the event goes to breast cancer charity Think Pink – an
independent foundation that raises funds to provide free services to breast cancer patients and their families, assisting them with their cancer journey. “We hold a sausage sizzle, rattle tins and at the end of the day there’s a fun match between the mums to raise a bit of money too. “We try to raise about $10,000 for the cause but there’s a bit of an education element too.” Money raised from the day provides services such as free unlimited counselling with breast care nurses, free accommodation for families from regional Victoria, professionally fitted free wigs and therapeutic massage and exercise classes. SPORT Young Mustangs working hard for a breakthrough win Melton has made massive inroads in the Hockey Victoria Vic League 2 women’s competition despite their position on the ladder. The Mustangs sit bottom without a win, but the young team continues to improve week in, week out. Mustangs chairman Royce Schwarze said the group had come a long way. “We are competitive in a lot of games,” he said. “A bit more fitness and having a young side has been the difference. “In some games we’re leading at half-time, but we just can’t finish off games.” On Saturday, the Mustangs lost a close one to Caroline Springs 2-1. Kiara Ive was the goal scorer for Melton, with Lana Downes the side’s best player. Schwarze said while it might be short-term pain on the field now, it was bright for the future.

He said a few of their older players were playing in their second side to help with the development of the younger players. “The future is looking good,” Schwarze said. “In two to three years time the 18 to
21-year-olds will be in their prime and the younger one will have more experience. “We have a couple of 13 year-olds in the Vic League side. “We just have to keep them all together.” Schwarze said they were seeing the development of the younger players already. He named Grace Downes, who recently played in the Junior Victorian Championships, as a big improver. Schwarze said they were hoping to get a win before the season was out. He said opposition sides had been impressed with how they were playing. “I think we will get a win this year,” he said. “We’ve just got to put it all together.” “We play Gippsland which is a an opportunity, They are a similar side to us.” Off field, Schwarze said the club was continuing to boost its players.
He said a growth in numbers would mean an extra under-10s side this term. “The future is there.” In other results, the Mustangs’ women’s metro side lost to Hume, 4-0. Karen Eller was the Mustangs best in the loss. The men’s Vic League 3 side had a 3-1 loss to Collegians X, 3-1. Chu Che Hu was the goal scorer for Melton, which is fifth and one point outside the top four. It was a better day for the Mustangs against Collegians X in pennant G, with the Mustangs winning 6-5. Callan Armitage scored a hat-trick, while Chu Che Hu scored twice and Stephen Lawrence scored the other goal. Bacchus Marsh and Melton both lost thrillers in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday. With both sides needing wins to help their finals hopes, they had to watch as they fell just short. Bacchus Marsh lost to an inaccurate Redan, losing 7.22 (64)-9.5 (59). Melton lost in the dying minutes to Sebastopol, with the Burras winning 6.11 (47)-6.10 (46). Bacchus Marsh sits seventh, a game behind sixth placed Melton. Melton South also suffered a loss, losing to Ballarat 15.11 (101)-11.12 (78).

Montana wins a medal By Tara Murray Just over two years after starting to take long jump seriously, Montana Djatschenko has won a medal representing her country. Having started at Melton City Little Athletics, the Bacchus Marsh resident decided to start participating in long jump in early 2017. “I used to do triple jump as well and I was a state champion,” she said. “I was getting injuries doing that, so I just thought I would try something new. “2017 was the first time I participated at long jump at the state titles and I came away with the win. I was so surprised.” That decision has paid off in spades. Having won state titles the last three years, Djatschenko has had the opportunity to compete at the Australian titles on each occasion. Having still done triple jump and the 100
and 200 metres, this time she focused more on long jump. This year she finished fourth in the under-20 event at the nationals. She jumped a personal best of 5.93 metres. From there Djatschenko nominated to be selected for the Australian team for the Oceania Athletics Championships. With only the top three from the nationals guaranteed selection, it was a wait and see game. “You have to nominate yourself … I had to wait for an email. “As they only have to take the top three, I was hoping one of them didn’t make it. “There wasn’t much difference between us. I cried, I was so excited when I found out.” Djatschenko, who now trains four times a week with Essendon Athletics, was thrilled at the opportunity to take that next step. While she didn’t jump as far as she would
have liked, it was still enough for a silver medal. “I was happy that I got to represent Australia for the first time,” she said. “I was coming third before the fourth jump. Once I jumped that one, I knew I was second.” Djatschenko, who is in year 12 at Melton Christian Regional College, said she was so surprised with how well she had done in such a small period of time. Having started athletics when she was five, she said she enjoyed being able to perform and the friends that she had made. Having made her Australian debut, Djatschenko is hoping this is only the start of things to come. “My aim is to get to the Olympics one day,” she said. “My main aim at the moment is to make the world under-20 championships. “The aim is to get a qualifying time for that. “My personal best is 5.93. The distance needed is 6.15 metres.”
Melton South moved up to fifth in the Ballarat Netball League on Saturday. After an even first three quarters, the Panthers had an 11 to seven goal last quarter, to seal the 41-36 win. Akira McCormack scored 24 goals for the Panthers and was named best on court. Bacchus Marsh beat Redan 49-41, to sit just percentage outside the top six. Melton lost to Sebastopol, 62-32.

Rockbank returned to the winners list in the Riddell District Netball League. Having lost their last seven games, the win was a much needed one for the Rams. Rockbank started well against Broadford and were able to build the lead throughout, winning 47-27. Melton Centrals proved no match for Wallan, losing 59-21, while Diggers Rest lost to Rupertswood 43-39. Phoenix lays the foundation for a fresh beginning Melton Phoenix is putting in plans for the club to head in a new direction. Under new president Michelle Williamson, who came into the role six weeks ago, the club has formed a strategic plan focusing on the direction of the club between now and 2023. Williamson said there had been a lot of work behind the scenes to get the plan in place, which brings the focus back to “All About Football”. She said after a couple of tough years the club was in a good position off-field and was hoping that success would continue on-field. She said with three other clubs in the Melton council area, including some much bigger clubs, Phoenix had to plan for the future. “We have had tremendous growth over the past 18 months, doubling in size and in particular our girl’s teams,” she said. “We’ve been getting a strategic plan in place with a lot of hard work.

“We have a brand new committee, We want to get back to focusing on the football. “We’re trying to engage with the community and getting more participation.”
Making sure there were pathways for all players was a priority to give the players the best opportunity to play at higher levels. Williamson said that drive was something that had been lacking in previous years despite it being a strength in the past. She said they wanted children to be able to stay at the club, instead of ending up at other clubs to keep playing. She said their specialised female program was another big focus. The club has several junior girls teams, a kinder program and soccer mum’s program. This year they were unable to field a women’s side, having previously had one. “We want to get the women’s side back up and running next year,” she said. “We want to have a competitive 11-a-side by 2023. Hopefully we’ll have a junior girls team for every second year soon.”
Encouragingly on the men’s program, most of their senior side is under 22. Williamson said they were hoping that group could stick together and move through the ranks. The club will also get updated facilities in the next few years, as part of stage 2 of the MacPherson Park master plan. “It’s about getting the community feel and things going a bit better off-field,” Williamson said. “Hopefully that turns into success on-field.” On Saturday, the Melton Phoenix’s men’s state league 5 had a 1-1 draw with Barwon. Jason Moody was the goal scorer for the Phoenix. The draw takes Melton to a 5-5-5 record. This week they face Deakin Ducks away. Tara Murray
Melton still in finals hunt By Tara Murray Melton Thoroughbreds have kept their Big V women’s division 2 finals hopes alive with a thrilling overtime win against the Coburg Giants. With five teams fighting for two spots, the Thoroughbreds needed to win to keep their hopes alive. After a good start, the Thoroughbreds let up in the second quarter, with scores level at half time. It was an even third quarter, with Giants ahead by two points at the last break. Both sides had chances in the final quarter, but couldn’t convert, with the teams finishing regular time at 53 apiece. The Thoroughbreds were able to hit the front in overtime, winning 67-63. For Thoroughbreds coach Lauren Olcorn it was a nervous few minutes watching the game from the other side of the country. In Perth for work, Olcorn had to rely on live stats to get her through. She said acting coach Christian Impey and assistant Chantelle Paris-Webb did a really good job. “It keeps our finals hopes alive,” she said. “We have to win the next two matches to move into the top five, we still have glimmer of hope.” Olcorn said they had some really good patches on Saturday night, but let themselves down at other times. She pointed out a poor second quarter as costly. “We started off well and then the game fluctuated,” she said. “Our second quarters have been quite poor and we made some poor decisions and we’ve been working on it. “Last night it was a factor, we had to fight hard to come away with the win.” Olcorn said both sides had chances late in regular time to seal the game, but were hurt by poor shot selection. Jenna Conroy top scored for the Thoroughbreds with 22 points. “Jenna is an experienced and skilled player,” she said. “She knows when to step up.” Stacey Procak chipped in with 17 points, while Molly Young was big on the boards, taking 14 rebounds. The win keeps the Thoroughbreds’ finals hopes alive and all but ends the Giants. The Thoroughbreds sit seventh, but are only one game outside the top five with two rounds remaining. The Thoroughbreds face sixth-placed Wallan Panthers and fourth-placed Sherbrooke Suns in their final two matches. The Thoroughbreds will have to win both matches if they are any hope of playing finals. “Anyone can beat anyone in this division,” Olcorn said. Thoroughbreds had a big win against Sherbrooke Suns. The Thoroughbreds opened up a 23-point lead after the first three quarters. While they lost the last quarter, they had
done enough to win 86-67. Yovvan Zoric top scored with 18 points for the Thoroughbreds. The Thoroughbreds sit seventh, with finals already out of the equation.
Diggers Rest has come from behind to pull off a stunning win against Rupertswood in the Riddell District Football League. After losing three of their last four games, the Burras were in desperate need of a win against the Sharks, who were equal on points. The Sharks started the better of the two teams, kicking five goals to one in the first quarter. The Burras though worked their way into the game and were only trailing by five points at the final change. The Burras kicked the only four goals of the last quarter, to run away with the 9.8 (62)-6.6 (42) win. After kicking five goals in the first quarter, the Sharks were restricted to just one for the rest of the game. John McMahon and Deven Costigan kicked two goals each for the Burras with Stuart Clarke and Steven Fogarty named their best. The win moves the Burras up to fourth, only percentage behind second. In other matches, it was a tough day for Melton Centrals and Rockbank. Facing second placed Wallan, Centrals were blown away after quarter time. Centrals were restricted to just two goals after the first break, as a dominant Wallan won 15.19 (109)-3.6 (24). Rockbank showed some good signs at times during its loss to Broadford, 14.16 (100)-3.4 (22). After being down by 50 points at half-time, the Rams won the third quarter, before the Kangaroos found another level in the last quarter. Tara Murray

Toyota’s new HiAce a safe bet By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring Fifteen years is almost three lifetimes in motor car terms but that’s how long the previous Toyota HiAce commercial van was on the Australian market. Despite increased competition in recent years it’s been the top-selling van throughout that 15-year period and is sure to continue with the release of an all-new model. The most noticeable change with new HiAce is that it now comes in a semi-bonneted configuration that not only provides extra collision safety but also, allows the engine to be moved forward ahead of the front axle rather than under the cabin as in previous models. This provides improvements in cabin comfort, seating and ergonomics as well as greater stability and ride comfort. As before, the new HiAce comes in long wheelbase (LWB) and super long wheelbase (SLWB) lengths. These have been increased by 640mm and 750mm respectively with the overall length of the LWB now up 570mm to 5265mm and SLWB by 535mm to 5915mm. The increases are within the cabin, with cargo space unchanged at 6.2 cubic metres and 9.3 cubic metres. Model variants are two-seat LWB and SLWB vans, five-seat LWB crew van and 12-seat Commuter bus. As before, HiAce comes with the choice of petrol or turbo-diesel engines although they have been given significant boosts. The new 3.5-litre V6 petrol replaces the previous 2.7-litre four-cylinder unit with peak power up by 89kW to 207kW and maximum torque by 108Nm to 351Nm. Although down in capacity from 3.0 litres the new 2.8-litre turbo-diesel generates more power (up to 30kW) and torque (up to 150Nm) depending on the model variant.

The two-seat LWB vans get the option of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic while the SLWB vans and Commuter are auto-only. With its larger cabin, the interior of the new HiAce is a much more appealing place for long-suffering drivers. Access is easier, there’s a lower seating position with height-adjustable driver’s seat, tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel with controls for the audio, infotainment and cruise control systems and a variety of storage areas.
Importantly, new HiAce comes with a range of Toyota Safety Sense driver assistance features including pre-collision safety system with pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection; lane departure alert with steering assist; road sign assist (certain speed signs only); auto high beam; blind spot monitor; rear cross traffic alert; reversing camera; front and rear parking sensors and up to nine airbags.
