The romance of local lore

Shirleyrose Rowe has lived in Bacchus Marsh for 35 years – but her book captures a much longer stretch of the town’s history. Ninety-three-year-old Rowe, who self-published History of an era with recipes under the name Shirley Rose, captured stories, history, and recipes from the Bacchus Marsh of between 1888 and 2002. She said the inspiration for the book came when she started running a now closed local cafe, Rose Cottage, with her daughter and became enthralled by the cottage’s history. “There is a big estate in the Rowsley Valley just out of Bacchus Marsh,” she said. “The head gardener there fell in love with the parlour maid and built that little cottage as their wedding present, and I thought that was very romantic. “When I heard that I made up my mind that I’d write a book. I’ve always liked a good story.” It took her about 10 years to finish the book – and after having 500 copies printed, she still has some to sell. “The town has grown so much since I moved here that there would be a lot of people that won’t know about the town’s history,” she said. Melton up in smoke Melton and Brimbank have the highest smoking rates in the west, new data reveals. Victoria University’s health policy think tank, the Mitchell Institute, has released new figures revealing daily smoking rates across Australia. In Melton and Brimbank, more than 17 per cent of adults are daily smokers. Melton is home to 17,690 daily smokers, while 26,921 people engage in the habit in Brimbank.

Hobsons Bay has a daily smoking rate of 16 per cent, while Wyndham and Maribyrnong’s smoking rates are at 15 per cent. Nationally, 14 per cent of adults smoke daily. The institute said national smoking rates have been on a steady decline since its peak in the 1970s when almost three quarters of Australian
men and one quarter of women smoked. Mitchell Institute health policy lead, Ben Harris said the local smoking rates were troubling. “We need to target and redouble our efforts to facilitate opportunities for people to quit,” he said. “We know that local factors are influencing the smoking rates. Where we live, where we work, when we left school, and who we know influences smoking. “We also know that the best way to stop children picking up the habit is to help

the adults around them quit smoking.” Mr Harris said governments needed to better target their advertising and health services budgets to communities where smoking rates remained high. “We know the Quit smoking messages, combined with information on packaging about disease caused by smoking is very effective in encouraging people to quit. “Using local approaches and local knowledge could help make sure that all Australians are given the best opportunity to quit smoking and improve their health and wellbeing.”

Rockbank growth surges ahead By Ewen McRae Rockbank continues to be one of the highest growth areas in the country, with Woodlea estate expecting to double its population by the end of next year. The estate is already home to 3600 residents after opening in 2015, and with a new town centre set to open soon that number is expected to climb quickly. Woodlea project director Matthew Dean said it was important the estate maintained high levels of infrastructure to keep up.
“As well as providing wonderful homes, we want to provide opportunities including employment, education, retail, commercial and community services as a means of taking suburban living to a new and inspiring standard,” he said. Once completed, Woodlea is expected to be home to more than 20,000 residents and will feature three sporting precincts, three primary schools (one private and two public), a community hub and a town centre. The estate is a key factor in Rockbank recently being named as the highest growth
area in Australia, with the Housing Industry Association reporting a growth rate of 59.4 per cent in the 2017-18 financial year. There were more than $224 million in building approvals in the same time. Melton council chief executive Kelvin Tori said growth in the Rockbank region needed to be supported by state and federal governments. “Rockbank residents need safe, efficient commutes, education choices, and healthcare access, and this need is felt across the city of Melton,” Mr Tori said. “Our growing communities like those in
Rockbank … are the reason we have been advocating the state and federal governments to fund vital infrastructure like the Western Highway upgrade, additional schools, a new hospital and an electrified railway line. “We have prepared for the city of Melton’s population projections through our precinct plans. “Community centres, recreation facilities, footpaths and roads are all defined in our precinct plans and will be delivered by council through its budget process as the population grows.”
Rescuing the rescuers A downpour last week has led to a flood of support for a local animal rescue shelter. The Bacchus Marsh region experienced a high amount of rainfall on June 3, with the Coopers Animal Refuge in Bullengarook recording 88 millimeters for the day. It meant an unhappy time for the refuge’s many animals and owner Christine Gilmore as the whole refuge flooded. “It was great to get the rain, but it was just too much, too quick,” Ms Gilmore said. “We did lose one joey, but all the animals were like drowned rats. We’ve got joeys, wombats, sheep and chickens, so they were all in need of some help. “The biggest concern was that we would lose more animals, which probably would have happened if we didn’t get the help.” Ms Gilmore put a post on Facebook calling for help from the community, and was soon inundated with offers from across the region,
with many now offering their help on a regular basis. “All these people we didn’t know just showed up with drills and shovels and hoes, and they were trenching and patching and helping the animals get safe and dry,” Ms Gilmore said. “We actually had to turn people away on the day because the response was so big, but since then we’ve had donations of beds and feed, and people wanting to help out in other ways. “I was just gobsmacked by the response from the community.” Ewen McRae

Vehicle rammed

At just 15, Lily Trethowan is taking a leading role in state youth affairs. The Bacchus Marsh teenager is part of the 2019 Youth Congress, meeting every month with Minister for Youth Gabrielle Williams and a diverse team of 19 other young Victorians aged 13 to 24. The Youth Congress advocates for the needs of young Victorians and helps to shape government policies, programs, and services. “Youth have something to give to civic life,” Lily said. “Our opinions deserve respect and fairness. “I know so many people, including myself, that want to provide their voice to government,
and Australian youth have voices everywhere and we all need to listen.” She said her time in the Girl Guides had given her the confidence to take an active role in the congress. “My Guiding experience as a whole has given me skills of teamwork and leadership, which I have transferred to Youth Congress,” she said. Attempted murder charge
Police have arrested a Truganina man over an assault in the CBD in March. Police searched an address on Moussa Court on June 6, arresting a 21-year-old and charging him with attempted murder. The charge relates to an incident on March 24, where a man was ambushed on King Street. The Truganina man is the second arrest in relation to the assault. Investigations are ongoing. Thieves target botanical garden By Ewen McRae Thieves have stolen plants from the Melton Botanic Garden in the dead of night. Three quiver trees were taken in late May from the Southern African bed near the depot in the north of the garden. The distinctive trees had only recently been planted by volunteers. Friends of the Melton Botanic Garden president John Bentley said it was disappointing to see the hard work of volunteers undone. “As a group we’ve had to raise funds to

acquire these plants, so it is disappointing to see the efforts of the volunteers treated this way,” Mr Bentley said. “They’re quite valuable trees, and would have been a really good feature in the garden in a few years’ time. “The real shame with this theft is these trees
are very hard to grow in Melbourne, but we’ve created an environment for them to thrive.” The trees are roughly a metre high, with a distinctive arrow shape at the top. Mr Bentley said this theft was part of a larger problem for the group. “It has been happening on a more regular basis in the last six months,” he said. “We’ve had bulbs taken, and other plants that will survive transplanting. “We’re hoping some residents nearby might come forward if they’ve seen something or might have camera footage.”
Melton council operation manager Leslie Stokes said while plant thefts were concerning, it was not a widespread problem. “Plant theft is not a common occurrence in the municipality,” Mr Stokes said. “In the past year, we have experienced a low percentage of plant thefts, consistent with previous years. “It’s always disappointing when thefts do occur within the city’s open space. “This theft is particularly disappointing for council and for those who volunteer their time to work in the botanic garden.”
Families dive right in Adam Dovile is not letting the cold weather stop him getting in a regular swim, and he’s bringing his daughters along for the fun. Ruby and Arabella recently started swimming lessons at Kingswim Caroline Springs, and Mr Dovile said the winter cold didn’t hold them back from hitting the pool. “As a family we typically spend a lot of time outside and time with the kids is largely outdoor activities like gardening and building, which can get pretty restricted in this weather,” Mr Dovile said. “I’ve found the girls’ swimming lessons are the perfect chance to keep up our time together. “Particularly at this young age, being able to get in the water and take part with them is a lot of fun.” In addition to water safety and learning different strokes, Mr Dovile said he found swimming to be a great bonding activity for him and his daughters.
“I love seeing the girls [and myself] so engaged in something that’s not only a lot of fun, but also teaching them a valuable and potentially lifesaving skill,” he said. “It’s a great way to keep fit and active during winter, get off devices and cure cabin fever. “Plus, keeping up lessons during winter means we can relax and enjoy our family beach time come summer, knowing the girls are well practised and safe in the water.” Kingswim area manager Anne Brown said they have seen a shift towards dads taking a more active role as the “swimming parent”. “While taking part in lessons with kids is the perfect opportunity for bonding and quality time for both parents, we see dads in particular jump at the chance to have that crucial skin to skin contact with bub that mum may already be getting at home,” she said. Belinda Teh is putting one foot in front of the other as she strives for law changes in her home state. The 27-year-old is currently walking from Melbourne to Perth to raise awareness for assisted dying legislation in Western Australia. Ms Teh, who passed through Melton on day one of the walk, said watching her mother die from breast cancer in 2016 had been the catalyst for her campaign. “You don’t really realise what the law means until it affects someone you love – and for me that person was my mum,” she said. “My mum had terminal breast cancer, made two requests for assisted dying, but couldn’t get what she wanted and as a result she died in terrible pain.
“So I’m trying to draw some attention to the laws that are about to be debated in WA and hopefully get the law that my mum never had.” Ms Teh will spend two months on the 4500-kiloemtre trek, ending in Perth on the day the bill will be introduced into Parliament. Victoria passed assisted dying legislation in 2017. “I remember sitting in front of my computer when the Victorian bill passed and wondering why can’t we have that here,” Ms Teh said. “There’s nothing that could have been done for my mum, so this is almost making up for all the things I couldn’t do for her, but also trying to create positive change.” Ewen McRae

The Bacchus Marsh hospital will be able to upgrade some of its equipment, thanks to a large donation from the recent Easter Festival. The festival has become a popular addition to the local calendar in recent years, and funds from the event go towards the hospital. This year, the festival donated $13,560, a huge jump from $8200 which was donated last year. One of the Easter Festival organisers, Dotty Hazell, said supporting the hospital just made sense. “The decision to support the Urgent Care Department at Bacchus Marsh was an easy one, with the organisers all spending time there at some stage with family and/or friends … over the years,” Ms Hazell said. A property developer in Melton South who tried to gouge tens of thousands of dollars from buyers three years after they put down their deposits has backed down. Land buyers at The Millstone estate received letters this week confirming the developer would honour the original contracts and no longer attempt to renegotiate land prices to extract extra payments. Property buyer Scott Parker said the about-face came as a huge relief and was a major win for the “little guys”.
Three years ago Mr Parker put down a deposit for a block of land at the estate valued at $130,000. Earlier this year developer Custodian Toolern Syndicate demanded he pay an extra $55,000 because the property value had increased while the land was being prepared for subdivision. Last week Custodian Toolern Syndicate backed down, telling buyers it would honour the original prices. Last month the Victorian Parliament passed new laws banning “sunset clauses” that allowed developers to terminate land sale contracts after three years if the plan for the subdivision

Western suburbs residents are the top online shoppers in Australia. The latest Australia Post eCommerce figures showed Point Cook had the greatest volume of eCommerce across the country, in the year to December, followed by Towoomba and Mackay in Queensland. According to the data, Point Cook online shoppers made the most number of purchases from variety stores, fashion, homewares and appliances and ordered the second highest number of health and beauty products, hobbies and recreational goods. Figures revealed that more than 75 per cent of households in Point Cook shopped online at some point in 2018. Nationwide, the total online spend in 2018 topped $27.5 billion, up 24 per cent on the year before. Australia Post parcels and express services general manager Ben Franzi said the annual report, Inside Australian Online Shopping, provided an overview of Australia’s eCommerce market with key insights into who is shopping online, and what they are buying. “Australians are getting online … and changing the face of shopping,” Mr Franzi said. “They are also expecting faster service and delivery – with next day deliveries growing by 31.7 per cent, with more than 62 per cent of these fashion-related purchases.” He said online goods made up 10 per cent of total retail last year. Hoppers Crossing online shoppers ranked seventh overall for the volume of purchases made last year. The suburb’s shoppers made the fourth highest number of purchases from variety stores, and also favoured fashion and homewares and appliances.

Melton Shire President, Allan Eden, announced on Monday night that he would not be contesting the August municipal elections. Cr Eden, 37, said the main reason for stepping down was that he wanted to spend more time with his family.
No one could begrudge travelling tree surgeon Norm Kellett for disliking Melton. Norm, 45, a gentle natured man with a love for the environment who has spent the past seven years looking for trees to cut and prune, was robbed of almost all his work equipment and some personal belongings last Tuesday week.
Farmers have lost hundreds of dollars in stock after a pack of dogs attacked and killed several sheep in Melton South. Farmer Mr Charles Attard raised concerns about the dogs roaming his property in Mount Cottrell Road last week, after he discovered that 20 sheep had been killed.

On a mission to empower children and their families The early intervention specialist team from Melbourne City Mission (MCM) is bringing skill and passion in helping children with developmental delay or disability in the Brimbank-Melton areas.
“The children I work with benefit the most when the whole family and a support network are involved. We can make goals together, practise at home, at the park, at kinder – anywhere that works best.”
Early Childhood Intervention Services manager Sally Moore says the team is equipped to support children and their families as they work towards goals and milestones.
Lucy Rudge is a speech pathologist and key worker. She mentors families and educators, providing strategies that support children’s communication and development.
“The journey for families from diagnosis to accessing support can be quite overwhelming,” she says. “Our early intervention specialists offer support every step of the way.
“While some people think the main role of a speech pathologist is to help people to talk, we support many more aspects,” Lucy explains, “from developing attention and play skills to learning new vocabulary and problem-solving in social situations.”
“We work in partnership with children and families to put building blocks in place for lifelong learning and development.” MCM provides speech, physio and occupational therapy, as well as specialised teaching. Every family is matched with a key worker, such as occupational therapist Samara Mascarenhas, who grew up in Melbourne’s west and loves helping others. “It takes everyone being involved so we can support children in the best way possible – support during setbacks and celebrations when we achieve goals,” says Samara. “It’s so important to empower the whole family and grow everyone’s knowledge and skills.
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding for people with disability to access support, achieve goals and live a positive life. The NDIS roll out started in Melbourne’s west in October 2018. The scheme currently provides support for almost 6000 children aged under six in Victoria. Titans coach Danny Haymes said they were thrilled with their start to the season as the Titans have already been promoted. “We started in C-grade but we were beating everyone and they put us up into B-reserve,” Haymes said. “We’ve only lost one game and we’ve managed to pick up a lot of new players. “We thought having a winter side would help build the club up.” The Titans currently sit fourth in B-reserve with a 2-1 record. Haymes said they had 17 players in their squad and had considered putting in a second team, but decided to stick with one team. With the start that they’ve had, Haymes said they were definitely aiming to make finals. “The game we lost, we only lost by one run,” he said. “We’re sharing the load and making sure that everyone learns. “When we have our full team on the park, we think we can match the other sides, if not better than them.” The Titans this week face Bellarine at MacPherson Park.

It was a tough weekend for Rockbank in the Riddell District Netball League. Facing Macedon, one of the pacesetters in the competition, the Rams had the chance to test themselves against the best. But the Cats came switched on with a 23-7 first quarter and the Rams were left chasing all day. The Cats were able to extend the margin in every quarter on the way to a 64-28 win. Jessica Christie, who was named the Rams’ best, shot 16 goals from 25 attempts. Defenders Askani Pirihi and Jada Passi were the other standouts for the Rams. The loss sees the Rams slip further from the top six, sitting in eighth, six points behind sixth-placed Riddell. Another side whose finals hopes are fading is Melton Centrals. Looking for their second win of the season, Centrals fell short against an increasingly confident Broadford. Coming off their first win in a couple of years, Broadford made it two in a row with a 46-42 win. A 19-goal third quarter was the difference for the Kangaroos, turning a five goal deficit into a six goal lead. For Centrals, Rebecca Morabito was named their best. Centrals sit ninth with one win. Diggers Rest pushed Romsey all the way in the closest match of the weekend. The Redbacks got out to an early lead and were able to extend that in the second quarter. The Burras were able to slightly close the gap in the third and fourth quarters, but it wasn’t enough, losing 49-42. The Burras sit fifth with four wins. Riddell and Rupertswood were the other winners.

SPORT Bacchus Marsh builds momentum to nail a timely win

Bacchus Marsh has grabbed a much-needed win against Darley in the Ballarat Netball League. Looking to cement their spot in the top six, the Cobras recovered from a slow start to come away with a solid 50-37 win. The Cobras were able to build the lead throughout the last three quarters after scores were level at quarter-time. Cobras coach Michael Saker said it was a physical game of serious rivals. “Being the rivalry, there’s always a bit more to play for,” he said. After an even first quarter, the Cobras spoke about fixing issues in the attacking end. That pep talk worked, inspiring a 14-9 second quarter that opened the game up. “We tidied a few things in the attacking end,” Saker said. “We weren’t giving the ball to those hitting the edge of the circle. “It was about being able to get the early feeds and into high-percentage places to have shots.”
Annie Hills shot 28 goals for the Cobras, while Ashlee Mitchell contributed 22. Kaila Ingham was named the Cobras’ best. For the Devils, Lauren Martin shot 25 goals. Defender Tarni Lopes was their best. The victory keeps the Cobras in sixth spot sitting on 3-3. Saker said the win against the Devils was part of an important run of games. “The next three rounds, we’re playing teams in the middle area of the ladder,” he said. “We play Melton South and Sebastopol and we need to get those eight points to consolidate our spot in the top six.” With the Cobras having a new line-up this season, Saker said they were slowly starting to click. But he admits there will be periods throughout the season when consistency is lacking. “It’s been an up-and-down season,” he said. “There will be some pretty good games when everything clicks together.
“Then there will be games we should be winning and we’re not. “We’ve got a young side, with four of our starting seven under the age of 22. “We’re getting better in the attacking end and moving the ball better. Now we need to know when to slow it down or pick up the pace.” In other matches, Melton South and Melton made the winners’ list. Melton South defeated Sebastopol 38-34. Akira McCormack scored 20 goals for the Panthers. A fast start was the key for Melton in its win over Redan. The Bloods led by seven goals at quarter-time, going on to extend that in every quarter for a 45-32 victory. Paige Gilcrist shot 34 goals for the Bloods. Wake-up call for Diggers By Tara Murray Diggers Rest was made to pay for a below par performance as its undefeated run in the Riddell District Football League came to an end against Romsey. In a battle between the top two sides, the Redbacks came from behind and stole the points with a strong second half. The Burras led at half-time but were kept to just three goals in the second half and went on to lose 12.19 (91)-8.7 (55). Burras playing coach Jamie Lobb said the result reflected where they were at with their football. “Things didn’t go to plan and they’re a pretty good outfit. “We had been winning games, but not playing well. You can get away with it for so long, but you will be hurt by teams like this.” Lobb said he thought they had control of the game in the first half, but hadn’t been able to convert. 22 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 11, 2019
He said it was a tough fight in the second half. “We were unable to maintain the running pressure. “We were able to for a while, but then we went away from our game style. “They got on top in the second half.” The Redbacks had 18 scoring shots to four in the second half, showing their dominance. Josh Wallace kicked two goals in the loss. Thomas Taylor was named the Burras’ best, but had little support. Lobb said they did not have many winners on the day but the match was a good learning curve for some of their younger players. Lobb was among several players out of the side at the weekend including Cole Morton, Deven Costigan, Tom Evans, Cameron McCabe and Jesse Flannery. The loss means the Burras slip to second on the ladder behind the Redbacks on percentage. The Burras have a bye this weekend and Lobb said it could not have come at a better time. On top of several players missing from the
side, they ended the game against Redbacks with just one fit player on the bench, An ankle injury to Lachie Langford was the most serious of the injuries. After the bye, the Burras face Macedon in Macedon and then Lancefield. In other weekend results, there were four one-sided matches. Riddell returned to the winners’ list, smashing Woodend-Hesket 24.18 (162)-5.8 (38). Rupertswood had little trouble against Lancefield, winning 23.18 (156)-1.1 (7). Nick Grigg continued his good form with seven goals. Jason Cooke kicked 15 goals as Macedon had a day out against Rockbank, winning 44.22 (286)-2.0 (12). Melton Centrals got a much-needed win, beating Broadford 18.13 (121)-4.8 (32). Daniel Weir kicked six goals. The win keeps the Centrals in touch with the top six, sitting outside on percentage.
Melton Cricket Club is looking to use the expertise within its playing group for the 2019-20 Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season. Instead of appointing one coach, the club has appointed a coaching panel to take the reins. Anthony Gale will oversee the panel as a director of coaching. Nathan Geisler, who has coached the side in recent seasons, Brad Jones, Ash Sweet and Ben MacRae make up the remainder of the panel. All will focus on one or two areas of the game. Gale said the approach was something that was common within football clubs and premier cricket clubs. “We’ve changed things around a bit and want to utilise the boys we have in the team a bit better,” he said. “Nathan has been coach for the last four to five years. We just thought we would try and share the workload around and tap into the expertise. “You’ve got Ben MacRae, who captained Essendon, and Ash Sweet played with Carlton. “When you have one person coaching, it can be more about administration than coaching.” Gale said the reaction to the coaching panel had been positive. He said he hoped that it would help take the club to the next level. The first XI team lost in a preliminary final earlier this year. “Hopefully it will make the whole program run a bit better,” Gale said. “We’ve gone OK the last few years and the club as a whole is improving and hopefully that will continue. “We want to share the knowledge with the young group coming through.” Gale said at this stage they had kept most of the playing group together. Sri Lankans Pawan Wickramasinghe and Prabath Priyankaraare are unlikely to return and Gale, who stepped down from playing consistent first XI cricket last season, said he planned to play on, Gale said they were starting to look at gaps in the side that needed to be filled for next season. Wolves sign former NFL player as coach Melton Wolves Gridiron Club has pulled off a coaching coup, signing a coach that has played at the highest level. In a first for the Wolves, they have looked overseas for a coach and they’ve found someone with extensive coaching and playing experience, Tony Simmons. Simmons spent five years in the NFL, playing with the New England Patriots, the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts and New York Giants. He then played overseas, before turning to coaching. He has coached in America and at a number of clubs in Europe. Wolves president Brad Baker said they were hoping the signing of Simmons would help bring some more players to the club. “It’s pretty exciting for the club,” he said. “To learn from someone who has played at the highest level is amazing.” Baker said they needed a significant numbers boost for all three of their sides and were actively recruiting. As well as having a men’s side, the club has a women’s team and under-15 mixed team. He said they had been active on social media trying to get the word out and were hoping the

signing of Simmons would help. “A lot of people didn’t know that there was a team in Melton, let alone a competition in Victoria. “Most people who have been in touch didn’t have any idea. We need to get some new players for all three teams. “The numbers at training are growing each week, but we’re still looking for players.” Baker said they had lost some players from the past season, with a number they had picked up at the last minute returning to their former
clubs. With the Gridiron Victoria season due to start later than usual, Baker said they were hoping to attract players who might be playing other winter sports. This year’s season is due to start in the middle of August and run until the second weekend in December. He said anyone of any ability was welcome to come down to the club. After finishing runners-up in division 2 in 2017, the Wolves men’s side faced tougher opposition last season with the competition going to one division. Baker said it was a good challenge for the side. “It was a bit of a step up, but if you want to improve you have to play in a better competition.” Their women’s and under-15 teams both played in six team competitions. Cobras take the points By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh did enough to get across the line against local rival Darley on Saturday in the Ballarat Football League. Neither team went away from the game pleased with their overall performance, but it was the Cobras that came away with the points. After trailing early on, the Cobras ran away with it in the second half, winning 10.14 (74)-8.3 (51). Cobras coach Peter Davey said they were happy to come away with the win. “We didn’t play great football, but we did enough,” he said. “Our first quarter was terrible and we played away from our game plan. “We had plans in place for Darley and we weren’t sticking to them either. “We worked our way back in the second half of the second quarter. “The third and fourth quarters were really solid.” Davey said the difference after quarter-time was making sure they stuck to the game plan. As they had seen in recent weeks, if they were able to do that they were more than likely to come away with the win. Davey said plans to keep the corridor congested in the Devils forward line had also worked after quarter-time. Jacob Chisari kicked four goals for the Cobras. Jake Owen was the Cobras’ best in his best game of the year. “He drew two defenders a lot of the day and was a great target in the air and then competed on the ground as well,” Davey said. Davey also paid tribute to Quade Butt, who decided to play, after his father passed away during the week. For the Devils, Jake Edwards kicked four goals and was named their best. Davey said Edwards was getting goals from really hard positions. The win is the Cobras third in a row and brings them back to 3-3. Davey said the difference in the past three rounds has been the development of the group together. “It’s about getting the new game plan together,” he said. “It’s a bit of change. The first three weeks there were some teething problems. “We’re starting to play our brand of football for longer in games. “There’s still a few gears to go.” While the rivalry was as fierce as ever between the two sides on the field, they joined forces to raise money for Fight MND.

The Western Jets enjoyed a successful trip to Gippsland, coming away with the points against Gippsland Power in the NAB League. The Jets got out to a good start and led by 29 points at the main break. The Power got back into the game in the second half, but the Jets did enough to secure a 9.11 (65)-7.5 (47). Emerson Jeka kicked two goals for the Jets, while Jonah Horo was named their best. The win was the Jets’ sixth for the season.

Bacchus Marsh Cricket Club has announced the signing of Kasun Suriaratchie for the upcoming Gisborne and District Cricket Association season. Suriaratchie played one game for the Bulls last season, but has joined the club full-time for the 2019-20 season. Suriaratchie brings a wealth of experience to the two-time reigning premiers, having played several years of Victorian Premier Cricket for Casey South Melbourne and Camberwell Magpies. He led the Ryder Medal early in the 2015-16 season after a hot start with the bat.

Billy Crofts had his best game of the season to be named the Bloods best. It was a day to forget for Melton South. Coming off their best performance of the season, the Panthers were smashed by Sebastopol, 17.12 (114)-3.7 (25).
