Hobby hits gold reward

Avid coin collector Pauline Lippold has taken out a national competition, but she says her new friendships are the biggest reward from her favourite hobby. The Rockbank woman has won the Australian Mint’s Dollar Discovery competition, which encouraged the public to hunt for three unique $1 coins. Ms Lippold said coin collecting had become an important part of her life, and the competition had provided hours of fun. “It was my friends who got me into coin collecting,” she said. “We all have quite significant medical issues and we found that collecting coins, as well as noodling, are the perfect hobbies for us to take our minds off what we are going through and to give us an obsession. “My friends are avid coin collectors and were thrilled when they found out about this competition. “While sharing a cup of tea they convinced me to get involved and I am extremely pleased I did.” The competition involved finding three coins marked with A, U and S. Ms Lippold is one of eight winners to receive a $10,000 trip for three to Canberra, which will include a visit to the mint to create a pure silver coin, which would normally cost $1695. Ewen McRae
Call to take up flu jabs By Ewen McRae Demand for flu vaccinations is higher than ever, ahead of what is predicted to be a prolonged and brutal flu season. Djerriwarrh Health Services has already administered more than 1000 vaccinations locally this season, including to all staff, staff family members, school teachers and nursing homes. It comes as 26 people in Victoria have died from influenza as the flu season hits early. Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Belinda Scott said while the Melton and

Moorabool communities had not been hit hard by the virus yet, it was important to get the vaccination message out there. “Just the fact we’re talking about the flu in May is remarkable, as the flu season is traditionally June until September,” Ms Scott said. “Given we have already seen deaths and
significant hospitalisations in other parts of the state does give the indication that the flu season is going to be worse than in the past. “We’re doing a very wide-ranging vaccination program this year, and encouraging the community to take that up.” Ms Scott also stressed the importance for pregnant women to get the vaccine in their third trimester, both for the mother and their child. “By getting the flu vaccine in the third trimester it will actually protect the baby for six months after it is born,” she said. “When they are at their littlest and most vulnerable
this gives them that protection, so that’s a key project that we are involved in.” In past years, just 20 per cent of pregnant women who used DHS services had taken up the flu vaccine. The service is targeting a 100 per cent uptake this year. Ms Scott said as well as getting an early vaccine, maintaining good personal hygiene was the best form of defence for locals. “Practicing good hand hygiene by washing hands with warm soapy water, coughing into your elbow and using tissues once and discarding are all important measures to protect you and your family,” she said.

State moves ahead on hospital By Ewen McRae The long-awaited Melton hospital is a step closer to reality after last week’s state budget. Making good on a pre-election promise, the state government announced $2.4 million for a business case to begin planning for the hospital. The government’s election papers say the business case will “determine the capacity and range of services, and how it will link into services at other hospitals in the region.” Land in Cobblebank has been earmarked as the site for the hospital.
Melton mayor Bob Turner said the business plan was an important first step. “We are very grateful that the state government has recognised both the challenges and opportunities our fast-growing communities present and has put funding where it’s needed,” Cr Turner said. “The Melton hospital business case … [is an] important first step towards a major project that will transform everyday life for City of Melton residents. “I’m looking forward to council working with the state government on its timeline for
the delivery of these plans and crucially, the timely delivery of the associated project. “More than 20,000 people signed a petition and joined council’s campaign for a new hospital and I’m pleased that the process towards making this a reality will begin in the next financial year. “Greater access to quality health services … must match the city’s growth to secure liveability for City of Melton residents and this budget recognises that.” The council’s debate at last week’s meeting centered on a contract with advocacy
organisation The Civic Group, which had been working with council to advocate for the Melton hospital. While several councillors pushed to end the relationship with the group now the business case had been promised, the council decided to maintain the contract in the event of future hospital advocacy needs. “We’ve got the business case, but it’s not finished yet,” Cr Michelle Mendes said. “Until it is concrete and it’s standing up then it’s not finished, and we’ve got to have that advocacy behind us moving forward.”

Melton council will explore opportunities for an overseas Friendship City. It follows an approach from the Chinese city of Heze, which had representatives visit Melton in 2017 to investigate a potential future partnership. Heze is a province in the west of China, between Beijing and Shanghai, which is primarily an agricultural region. While the council officers report recommended that council further investigate establishing a friendship city relationship with Heze, an alternate motion from Cr Ken Hardy was passed. Cr Hardy proposed further investigation to establish a relationship with a city that would best benefit Melton council. “Principally this is based on economic, friendship, and sister city relationship with a yet to be named city,” Cr Hardy said. “It’s got to be based on meaningful conversations and also economic outcomes that will benefit Melton. Once we have that we can go forward with the state government, who have business relationships in China, that we can tap into that will match us with the best outcomes. “It’s about using the tools available to us before we make a decision.” Council officers will now prepare a report for council on potential friendship cities.

Shared experiences help heal By Ewen McRae John Naidu joined the Australian Army straight out of high school with the dream of seeing the world, and during a 15-year career he experienced all it had to offer. Across seven international deployments, Mr Naidu served at East Timor’s early elections, civil war in the Solomon Islands, helped earthquake recovery in Pakistan, as well as time in Iraq and the conflict in Afghanistan. “It was beautiful,” Mr Naidu said. “From the moment I joined to the day I discharged, I loved every moment.

“I saw the positive side of the world, the negative side of the world, I saw suffering in Iraq, Afghanistan, especially East Timor, I saw how little people survive on and how much people have. “I experienced a lot of variety of life in the 15 years I was in the army.” Mr Naidu started as a private in the infantry and moved up to lance corporal, specialising in reconnaissance. In mid-2009, while leading an operation in Afghanistan, Mr Naidu’s life took a turn. “I was a section commander at the time, and I lost one of my soldiers,” he said. “I had eight blokes under my command, and there was an incident with an IED [improvised explosive device]. One guy lost his life and another lost his leg. “That experience haunts me to the day. When I saw death that close, I had nightmares for a

while, and that incident is the one that changed me as a person, as a soldier, and everything else.” Mr Naidu returned to Australia soon afterwards, and was deployed just three
months later to Pakistan. But the close call in Afghanistan had changed him. “That sort of experience has given me a bit of survivors guilt,” he said. “As a section commander it was my duty to
bring my men back, and I didn’t. It was still fresh in my head, but I thought I was ready to be deployed again. “When I went to Pakistan I struggled a bit, because this time it wasn’t a war, it was more human, a humanitarian task, so I’d just come back from war and now I’m doing something totally different which is helping out people. “After that tour I didn’t feel good inside, mentally and everything. I started drinking a bit, having dramas at home, and a lot of other things, but luckily at that time I spoke up, and I was diagnosed with PTSD.” Mr Naidu discharged from the army in 2016, and settled with his family in Woodlea estate, near Rockbank. He became involved with the Caroline Springs RSL not long after. At 38, he is one of the younger veterans at the RSL, but he said the shared experiences has helped him adjust to his new life. “It was rough in the early days,” he said. “One minute I’m in charge of 60 soldiers, to now looking after the kids at home, it took a while to adjust but I really enjoy it now. “I was looking for belonging, and I realised there were more soldiers going through the same things that I was going through. Even though most of them are Vietnam veterans, they’ve fought the same mental war that I was going through, so they had that experience of dealing with it to talk to me about. “A lot of veterans struggle with anxiety and shut themselves away, so we’re really conscious about meeting up regularly and helping each other out. I’m a real people person so that is something I really enjoy doing, and it’s really important.” Mr Naidu helped with the design and construction of the Aintree war memorial, and now hopes to begin work in the customs or immigration sectors.

Vehicle theft arrest
Police have arrested a man following a series of alleged thefts from motor vehicles in the Moorabool, Ballarat and Melbourne CBD areas. Police executed a series of search warrants in Ballarat on May 29 and located a number of stolen goods, stolen vehicles, car parts and cash. A 25-year-old man was arrested and is assisting police with their inquiries. Police are continuing to investigate a number of thefts from motor vehicles and attempted thefts from motor vehicles in the past month, including at Ballan train station. Molly lets her hair down It took Molly three years to grow her hair almost to her waist – and just minutes for it to come off. The Melton nine-year-old had her long locks lopped last week. They’ll be used to create a wig for a child dealing with cancer treatment, with nearly 35 centimetres of hair going to the good cause. Molly said it was something she had been thinking about for some time. “Just over a year ago, my family lost a close friend to cancer,” she said. “So I wanted to do this in memory of her. My sister did it before, so I wanted to do it as well.
“It feels really nice and light without the hair. I think I might do it again.” Molly’s mum, Colleen, said she was a very proud parent. “It was great to see the school and the community really get behind her and support her in this,” she said. “It was in memory of Jodie Harvey, who was a big part of the Melton community, so it is nice for their family to know that we haven’t forgotten her. “Apparently it takes six people to donate their hair to make one wig, so this is just a start.” Ewen McRae
Police impounded a car in Truganina last week after it was seen travelling more than double the speed limit. The BMW was clocked at 141km/h in a 60km/h zone on Boundary Road about 9.40pm on May 30. Police immediately intercepted the male driver, an 18-year-old man from Truganina. Police say the man said he had bought the car half-an-hour before, it was making a funny noise and he was testing it. The car was impounded at a cost of $938 and the man is expected to be charged on summons with speeding offences. Clubs regroup to fight for funds By Ewen McRae Local sports clubs that missed out on funding following the federal election are preparing to start lobbying again. Three clubs received a commitment of federal funds from the Labor Party if Bill Shorten was able to form government, but that money was negated when the Coalition was re-elected. Rockbank Football Club received a pledge of $1.8 million towards upgrading the social
rooms, kitchen, changerooms and ground lighting at Ian Cowie Recreation Reserve. Rockbank general manager Gavin Sporle said while it was disappointing to miss out on the funds, they would start the lobbying process again. “The reality is that with any election the result can go either way,” Mr Sporle said. “The funding is something that we desperately needed, but it’s no one’s fault that we don’t have it. “It means that we have to start again,
speak to council, state government and federal government to see if we can get some support. “The fact is that we were successful in getting a funding commitment once, so there’s nothing to stop us being successful again if we continue to lobby, because we still need work done on our facilities. “I think it’s a wise investment for anyone to put funding into, especially given the growth in the region.” Other commitments lying on the scrap
heap after the election include $1 million for a new synthetic pitch for the Westside Strikers Football Club at Brookside reserve in Caroline Springs, as well as $500,000 for upgrades at Diggers Rest Football Club. Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor said he would push for federal funding commitments for these projects in this term of Parliament. “While I am disappointed that Labor lost the federal election, I am devastated for all the people who will now miss out on Labor’s commitments,” he said.

The redeveloped Hannah Watts Park and Bill Cahill Reserve, as well as the new Arnolds Creek Play Space were all unveiled last week following six months of works. All three parks were jointly funded by council and the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the new parks should encourage more local residents to spend time outdoors. “These are modern, well-considered spaces that integrate the natural environment with play and make spending time outdoors enticing and accessible to the whole community,” Cr Turner said. “The colourful playgrounds, nature spaces and shaded picnic areas will promote social and physical activity for all ages, stimulate young imaginations, and make

Madam discovers joy in writing By Alesha Capone Brothel madam Lily Yang has penned an autobiography detailing her childhood in China and eventual journey to Australia. Yang – who is madam of The Cherry Tree Garden in Williamstown North – says her book, Take Memories, Leave Footprints, “doesn’t actually dwell too much on being a madam in a brothel”.

Rather, the book details how a young Lily and her family were exiled to a village in far north China to be “rehabilitated” during the Chinese Cultural Revolution before going on to detail her experiences growing to adulthood. Yang, who lives in Caroline Springs, described writing the book as “a wonderful experience”. “Writing is a bit like reading a book in reverse – one thing remembered leads to uncovering other unremembered things,” she said. “That was the real joy I found in writing. “I was lucky, as well, because I had grown up with storytellers, especially my father and an old Buddhist lady in the village when I was around 10 years old. I would sit enchanted by the ‘word paintings’ and the legends of old China and its superstitions.” Yang has written two previous books, one of which is based on the true story of a young girl in Cambodia who escaped from child sex slavery and gets help from Yang. Yang said proceeds from sales of her books go towards the Sunlight Foundation, a charity

she established to provide funds to rescue, rehabilitate and educate victims of child sex trafficking gangs in Asia. Yang said she wanted to “speak out”, on the issue.
“I want to be a voice in my industry that says this is not right and it must stop,” she said. Yang said she believed what she does as a madam “is fun, necessary and helpful to society”.

As part of National Reconciliation Week, year 9 students joined with local indigenous artist Fiona Clarke to paint the striking mural, which depicts the indigenous flag and a series of footprints alongside a simple message of reconciliation. College principal Simon Sherlock said the mural was just one part of an increased focus on indigenous culture and understanding at the school. “We’ve started working with the Koori community, developing a Koori club … we realised that we need to do more, and we must
do more, to share the culture and the story,” Mr Sherlock said. He said the year 9 students learned about the history and culture of indigenous communities in their humanities studies. Afterwards, they said they wanted to do something that would be a testament to their commitment to reconciliation. “They did the design, looked at getting a local grant so we could have an indigenous artist come in and help us put it all together, and then came together to give us this fantastic mural,” Mr Sherlock said. “It’s become a big focus for the whole school, and something we’re really proud of.” Ewen McRae

Cr Bob Turner With the Federal election over, we now turn our attention to the State Budget, which was brought down on 28 May. It features several announcements that will benefit our community, not least of which is the allocation of $2.4 million for a business case to develop a new hospital within our City.
Other positive Budget announcements include new primary schools in Eynesbury and Aintree, upgrades to Exford Primary School and a plan to upgrade Staughton College. These are pretty significant projects for our growing community, where 44 babies—that’s roughly two prep classes—are born each week.
Thousands of residents supported the Build Melton Hospital campaign last year, so it’s fantastic that the State Government has fulfilled their preelection promise to fund the business case for this much needed facility.
The Budget also included the delivery of 100 new or upgraded car parks at Melton Train Station; an announcement I’m confident local rail commuters will be extremely happy to hear.
It’s also exciting to see the allocation of $100 million for the development of a comprehensive rail plan for Melbourne’s west, which importantly includes mapping out a proposal to electrify the Melton rail line, something Council has been advocating for, for many years.
Council looks forward to working with the State Government to deliver these major health, education and transport infrastructure projects, which will vastly improve everyday life for thousands of residents. Cr Goran Kesic Sporting enthusiasts are in for a real treat, now that the redevelopment of the Caroline Springs Leisure Centre and sub-regional tennis facility has been completed. Transforming the space into one of the most impressive sporting precincts in Melbourne’s west, the $11.8 million project was jointly funded by Melton City Council, State Government and Tennis Australia, and has delivered a state-of-the-art transformation—a huge gain for local sports clubs and recreation groups. Two additional indoor highball courts have been constructed, along with new change rooms, first aid room, function room, and commercial kitchen; a sub-regional tennis facility featuring 12 outdoor tennis courts with lighting; one outdoor netball court; and three outdoor basketball and netball rings. Sitting at the heart of what is now known as the CS Town Centre Sports

MY PLACE Robyn Youl is a volunteer at the Grant Lodge Nursing Home, and was recently a finalist in the Health Minister’s volunteer awards. She spoke with Ewen McRae. I have lived in Bacchus Marsh for near on 50 years. Our babies – Leesa (47 years old) and Gordon (46 years old), were the first to have their Dad present at birth. Taught at Bacchus Marsh High School – when my Dad died my amazing drama students visited me at home in George Street for a group hug. A humbling and moving gesture. What do you like best about the area? People define places. Warmth, laughter and generosity of spirit emanate from our shops, our streets, our parks, our schools. What could make the area better? More faith in the capacity and vitality of our youth to inherit this world, their future. Respect for the aged – the repositories of memories of community. Inclusion of our police as advisors, helping hands and guardians of us all. Where is your favourite place to go for a feed in the area? As a senior – Back to Bacchus is hard to beat. Good tucker, great service, respect. Mona’s is eclectic – an icon. Can you tell me about your work at Grant Lodge? How did you become involved? After the death of my parents – aged care became a focus for us and the K9 Circus. Husband Barry manages the props, transports
us to the venue and we become family for the residents for a couple of hours. It is maybe poetry writing, gumboot gardening, planting terrariums in the company of residents, staff, relatives and volunteers. It’s camaraderie, creativity and boundless curiosity to experiment with new ways to do things. What has been some of the highlights from your time at the Grant Lodge? Darley market Grant Lodge Stall the day it teamed with rain. It was such a hoot – we have a drought – it rains. Are we celebrating – NO at first. Then it WAS FUN – to get wet in real rain. Bunnings art classes are a fantastic community service. Being disabled but feeling part of a team. Two incredibly clever little dogs who bring joy by being themselves. The generosity of Rotary – from supporting farm animal visits to purchasing two Reverie Harps. How did it feel to be nominated for the Minister for Health Volunteer Awards? Grant Lodge is about the team – from being in your 90’s to being a student nurse – as a volunteer I just carry the torch for us all. It’s not about an individual, it’s about being able to dream of the future. What would people be surprised to know about you? The Barbara Walker Pain Management Clinic gives ordinary people like me the potential to realise life to the full by teaching skills to manage chronic pain. I am a very lucky student.

Driving daily results Ten years after it launched, the Djerriwarrh Community Services L2P program is proving more popular than ever. The program matches volunteers with learner drivers to help young people build up the 120 hours of driving they need to get their licence. The program recently celebrated its 10th birthday, and program co-ordinator Kim Leech said it had been an important addition to the community. “We’ve achieved 150 licences across those 10 years in Melton and Moorabool,” Ms Leech said. “We have our own cars, and we give the volunteer mentors training, and they love it. “The community has a really strong spirit, and it’s great to see that shine through.”
Across the 10 years, the 35 volunteer mentors have contributed more than 19,400 hours of driving lessons for local learners. With a waiting list to join the program, Ms Leech encouraged anyone thinking of becoming a mentor driver to get involved. “There’s a huge need for volunteers,” she said. “The people we have are fantastic. They are there for that young person to give them support, and there seems to be a lot of people that are in need that don’t have a parent at home with a licence, or don’t have a car to get those hours up. SPORT Springers hockey stars step up to a new challenge Two of Caroline Springs’ youngest stars are preparing to showcase their skills at a higher level. Hunnardeep Kaur Sandhu and Coen Sykes have both been selected in teams for the Junior State Championships that start next month. Sandhu is the first homegrown Springer to be selected for the JSC. She will play in the North West Tigers under-13 girls team. This year was the first time the 11-year-old had tried out to make the Tigers’ team. “I’m really happy,” she said. “Last year I didn’t know about this and my coach said to mum that I should try out for it,” she said. “It was kind of 50-50 if I made the team as there was a lot of really good players. On the other hand I did my best. “I’m really excited.” Sandhu said she was excited about the championships and had already seen a difference in the skill level at training.

“I’m expecting it to be a challenge. There are some really good players and I’m looking forward to setting my goals,” she said. Sandhu, who used to play hockey with her cousins and brothers for fun, joined the Springers last season at her uncle’s suggestion.
She’s played in the Springers junior program, while also playing for one of their senior sides. She said it was challenging playing both. “It is really tough, as they are really good,” she said of the women’s side. “I have to watch out as they hit the ball harder. “They have more skills. I’ve learned a lot from them.” This is Sykes’ third year of being part of the JSC, but this time it will be a little bit different, with him playing juniors at a new club. He will represent the Eastern Hotshots under-13 boys. “I have played twice before this year, but I’m at a new club [Camberwell]. “As the club is in a different metro region, I’m playing for them.” Sykes said it was a challenge each week playing for two different clubs, while playing juniors and seniors.
Winners are grinners By Tara Murray Melton Centrals are riding high and undefeated in the AFL Goldfields Women’s competition. After a few tough years, the Centrals have started the season with six wins from as many matches. Centrals coach Ray Martin said he was amazed with how the side was going and the passion of the players. Centrals defeated Darley 12.21 (93)-1.0 (6) on Saturday, a week after downing East Point. The East Point result was particularly pleasing for Martin. “We had 18 injuries and I didn’t think we would get a team up,” he said. “We had a few girls come back to help us out. “I thought we would be competitive against a team which hadn’t conceded a goal. “Once we kicked the first goal, the girls realised they could do it.” Martin said it had taken a little while, but the players were learning to play as a team. He said the players’ enthusiasm about wanting to play with each other was pleasing and that many of them were mums. He said they had increased training from once a week to twice a week and were getting about 20 players at nearly every session. “We’ve got two brand new players this week,” he said. “One had a baby 12 weeks ago and has been to training three times. “Natalie Edwards is a kick boxer. Last week her foot was purple and she still wanted to play. “Sarah Moore’s husband died a couple of weeks ago … she got in touch, saying if we needed her to help give a chop out, she would play. “They’re a pleasure to coach.” Off field, Martin said there were a number of people willing to volunteer to help each week – another bonus for the club. He said that was an area in which the club had struggled in the past. Against Darley, the Centrals put in a dominant display and led by 39 points at half-time. They extended their lead in the third and fourth quarters. Jessica Kelly was the star forward, kicking five goals. While the Centrals are undefeated, they are under no illusions that there’s plenty of challenges ahead. Their next bunch of matches includes facing the other three sides in the top four. “We’re going to have to play some of the more physical teams,” Martin said. “I don’t think we’re a really physical team. We’ve got a team that wants to win and also have a good time, which is the perfect mesh.” Centrals this week have the bye, with no

Sykes, who has been playing hockey for seven years, said the best thing about the JSC was the friends he had made. He started playing after his father took up the sport. “I thought I would give it a go, and I love it.” As well as combining playing for two clubs and training with the Hotshots, Sykes has been part of the Hockey Victoria Academy for two years. He was also part of the team that won gold last year at the School Sports Australia Championships and hopes to make the under-13 state team this year. Tara Murray

Four Gisborne and District Cricket Association players have been named in the Centrals Highlands Cricket Region’s team of the year. The team is selected from the six associations within the region. Romsey captain-coach Ben Way was selected vice-captain of the side, having previously been named captain. Joint Sullivan medallists, Madushanka Ekenayaka and Taylor Stevenson were named in the side, as was Alex Porter who finished third in the Sullivan Medal. Ekenayaka, who has signed with Darley, was named in the team for a third time.

Caroline Springs George Cross has lost patience with coach Corey Smith, sacking him after a poor start to the FFV state league 1 north-west season. The Georgies had just eight points after nine rounds, forcing the club to make a change last week. Eric Vassiliadis has been appointed the club’s new coach and took the reigns for the side’s match against North Sunshine Eagles. The coaching change didn’t make much difference, with the Georgies losing 4-2. The loss leaves the Georgies sitting last heading into the catch-up round this weekend.

Diggers Rest had a big win against Rockbank in the Riddell District Football League. In the battle between first and last, the Burras had no issues at all, winning 41.20 (266)-6.2 (38). The Burras had 14 goal-scorers, with debutant Liam Watson, Lachie Langford and Matthew Krul kicking five goals each. For the Rams, Anthony Close and Brandon McGee kicked two goals each. The Burras this week face Romsey in a top of the table clash. Melton Centrals suffered a second big loss in a row, this time to Romsey. The Redbacks winning, 25.9 (159)-3.7 (25), with Centrals held goalless until the final quarter. David Callus was the best for Centrals on a tough day. Relieved Panthers reach a winning benchmark There were plenty of celebrations and some relief as Melton South broke through for its first win of the Ballarat Football League season. After a tough month that included two weeks off and two losses in excess of 20 goals, against Lake Wendouree on Saturday, the Panthers fired up. After trailing at half-time, Melton South took control in the third quarter and extended its lead early in the last before running out of legs late. That didn’t matter – the Panthers won 10.16 (76)-8.9 (57). Panthers coach Heath Pritchard said some recalibration in the week leading up to the game had paid dividends. “We wanted to stick the course and focus on our ball movement and be tougher for longer,” he said. “We were able to do that.” Also pleasing for the Panthers was winning, despite some injury concerns.
They had just two players on the bench after half-time and had no fit players on the bench in the final quarter. VFL-listed played Dylan Conway kicked six goals in his second game for the Panthers this season and was named best on ground. Pritchard said the other standout was Dillon Sharp, who he said played his best game for the Panthers in the coach’s time at the club. “All the young kids stood up as well,” he said. “We had five players under 18. “Our defence was fantastic all day and everyone gelled and played their role.” Broden Collins hurt his ankle, with the full extent of the injury not yet known. Brody Sullivan re-injured his hamstring, while Will Thornton-Gielen is another who finished on the bench. Pritchard said they would be cautious with Sullivan, with him having issues with the same hamstring twice.
He said Conway also pulled up sore, but he expected him to play next week, whether it be with the Panthers or in the VFL. The win could be the high that the Panthers needed to get their season going. Pritchard said they had set the standard of what was expected every week. “There’s a fair bit of belief in what we are doing,” he said. “There are the premier sides in the competition and then there’s sides that are around us on the ladder. “We know we have to be competitive and get wins against the sides that are near us.” One of the teams against which the Panthers will expect to be competitive is their opponent this week, Sebastopol. Melton clicks into gear By Tara Murray Melton Thoroughbreds produced their best performance of the Big V men’s division 2 season at the weekend. While the Thoroughbreds have had bigger wins points-wise, coach Joe Hooks said he was pleased about the way they went about the match against the Craigieburn Eagles. “We’ve had problems gelling and coming together,” he said. “The wins we have so far are against the teams we’re supposed to beat. “In my opinion, it’s the first win we’ve shown we can play together and accept roles. “We’ve worked towards the common goal, which was the pleasing thing for me.” A strong final quarter was the difference against the Eagles in the 82-70 win. The Thoroughbreds led by two points heading into the final break. Even though it wasn’t the cleanest performance they were able to win the final quarter 29-19. “There was a couple of times we didn’t execute and we got their import [Damon Smith] into foul trouble and didn’t make the most of it,” Hooks said. “We messed around with the ball. The boys did a good job after the time out. “For the most part we did it together.” Import Chris Johnson had a double-double, top scoring with 20 points. Three other players scored double figures. Hooks was also impressed with the performance of the three youth league players, Koby Skenderis, Fernando Rios-Rodriguez and Jackson Jones, who stepped up. “I was proud of them. I would have them all the time if I could,” he said. Hooks said the playing group had now set the standard they need to match each week. “If we take the same attitude for the rest of the season, it can take us back to another tilt at the title. “That attitude totally reflects the fact that we were playing for a common goal, we need to continue with that.” The Thoroughbreds have this weekend off for the Queen’s Birthday. Hooks said it was frustrating the bye had come at this point. “I really wanted to build momentum,” he said. “After the bye we travel to play Mildura, which is sitting on top. “It will be a tough one.” Hooks said there was still a possibility that they would add another player to the squad in the coming weeks. Hooks, who wouldn’t name the player, said if he joined the side, he would take them to another level. Meanwhile, the Thoroughbreds’ women’s side had a tight loss against the Blackburn Vikings. The Thoroughbreds were left to rue a poor final quarter, which they lost 21-9, in the 59-51 loss. Jenna Conroy top scored with 17 points, with
Stacey Procak the only other player to score double figures. The youth league men’s side had a massive 102-68 win against Coburg Giants at the Melton Indoor Recreation Centre. Dau Akol and Mayuol Makuac top scored with 16 points.
It was a tough weekend for Melton in the Ballarat Netball League. After two weeks off, the Bloods had the task of facing an undefeated Sunbury Lions side on Saturday. The Lions had little trouble in getting the four points, winning 59-31. Paige Gilcrist was the pick of the shooters for the Bloods with 21 goals from 29 attempts. The loss sees the Bloods slip outside the top six, only percentage behind Bacchus Marsh. It was also a tough weekend for Melton South and Darley. The Panthers took on fourth-placed Lake Wendouree, but fell way short, losing 58-37. Savannah Forbes scored 22 goals for the Panthers, with all shooters on court struggling with their shooting accuracy. Darley never got into the game against Ballarat. The Devils trailed by 19 goals at quarter-time, after managing just four goals in the opening quarter. It was a struggle throughout for the Devils with the margin increasing every quarter in the 82-21 loss. Ballarat had more than 100 shots for the game. For the Devils, Ruby Ancrum scored 11 goals, while Lauren Martin scored nine. Darley remains on the bottom, with just one win for the year. Bacchus Marsh had the bye. Despite not playing, the Cobras moved up a spot on the ladder into sixth. Other winners were North Ballarat City and East Point. This week, Melton hosts Redan, Melton South travels to Sebastopol and Darley and Bacchus Marsh play in the local derby. Tara Murray
