Bowled over by shock win Melton Secondary College is now home to Victoria’s newest state champions. A trio of students from the school recently claimed the bowls senior state title, after entering a team in the competition for the first time. Year 10 student Alisha was joined by her brother David and Emilee (both year 7) in the team, and together they fought off stiff competition before eventually knocking off the defending champions from Cobden. “All the kids we played were in year 11 or 12, so that was a bit of a worry,” Alisha said. “Not many people at school know what bowls is, so they don’t really understand it, but it was good to win and we had a lot of fun.” While Alisha has been bowling for six years, and Emilee is in the state bowls squad, David picked up a bowl just two days before the first round of qualification. They lost their first game at the Werribee regional round, but from there they went through unbeaten, eventually defeating Cobden 12-11. Sport co-ordinator Gerard Darcy said the team came together well. “It’s really exciting for the kids. To go there with two year 7s and go with the attitude of just doing your best, I think that helped us in the end,” he said. Ewen McRae

Moorabool wants fair deal By Ewen McRae Moorabool council is being short-changed by a state government fund, according to a new report. The report from the Auditor General into Regional Development Victoria (RDV) shows Moorabool, along with a number of other shires, is receiving far less compared to regional centres such as Ballarat and Geelong. The report shows Moorabool received the lowest amount of grants from RDV on both a per capita basis and total grants basis, despite having the fifth highest growth of the councils included.
Moorabool received just $15 per person in total grants from RDV’s Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund since 2007-08, when the fund was established, while nearby Ballarat received $820 per person from the same fund. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said all his council was seeking was a fair share. “At the end of the day, the figures don’t lie and its pretty disappointing,” Cr Tatchell said. “We’re bookended by two or three very large economies and yet we probably have more problems and are still being ignored. “I think it’s about time these city-centric governments started to recognise that country shires and country people deserve better.
“I’m critical of the process and I’m disappointed for the people. We’re going to put out a budget this year where 86.7 cents in the rate dollar is going to capital works. “I’d nearly guarantee that Moorabool is the highest in the state for that, yet we have the lowest grant funding and the highest growth.” Cr Tatchell said that unless governments at all levels started to invest in high growth areas such as Moorabool, the possibility of amalgamating shires could increase. “If we don’t get a handle on it, we’ll certainly be talking to and trying to get the government to engage on ‘do you want us to amalgamate?’ Because if that is what they want let’s plan
for it,” he said. “You can’t have high growth and no investment, especially in an area like ours. “We’re on 1700 square kilometres, 64 towns, and we’re on less than 10 per cent of the revenue of our bookended shires. That’s not a difficult equation. “I just want people to be fair dinkum. “What saddens me as a mayor is that despite the fact we’ve kept good books, we’ve kept our nose clean, we’ve passed the test and are not a high-risk council because we manage our finances – yet depreciation will kill us anyway because of the lack of investment. “I’m just fighting for what’s fair.”

Big budget slices to sport, roads By Ewen McRae Sports facilities and roads investments are the highlights of the proposed Moorabool council budget. The draft budget, which is out for community consultation until June 18, also includes funds for a number of projects and programs, as well as studies for future investment possibilities. Highlights of the proposed budget include $2.786 million for stage 1 of the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse Reserve upgrade, $1.6 million
for lighting upgrades to sports fields and $1.3 million each for works to Old Melbourne Road in Dunnstown and Werribee Vale Road in Maddingley. There will be a 2.5 per cent increase to rates, in line with rate-capping regulations. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said that while the council had the option of potentially increasing rates above the cap, it decided against it. “We’ve kept the rate rises to CPI, which has been incredibly difficult because I don’t think
you should have to build a shire on the back of the ratepayers,” he said. “We have the capacity to go beyond the rate cap, but in reality I think that would be an atrocious response to the lack of funding in the area.” Other notable investments for the shire include $828,000 for improved LED street lighting, $550,000 for pre-planning at the Bacchus Marsh Indoor Recreation Facility, $500,000 for stage one of the Ballan depot construction and $300,000 for the pavilion at Ballan Recreation Reserve.
The council will also adopt the Western Bulldogs Leadership Program ($150,000) and a Youth Mental Health Program ($150,000), as well as employ an arts and culture officer ($40,000). The proposed budget includes new borrowings of $10.736 million. Copies of the proposed budget can be viewed at moorabool.vic.gov.au. Rail split funded It’s full steam ahead for the separation of regional and metro services on the Geelong and Ballarat train lines. The state government last week allocated $100 million, as part of its 2019-20 budget, to deliver detailed planning and design for the separation project. It will create fewer stops, faster trips and less crowded trains on both lines. The investment is part of the Western Rail Plan, which will also result in two new electrified metro lines, to Melton and Wyndham Vale. Additional tracks will also be placed between Sunshine and the CBD to allow more trains to run – most likely through a new tunnel that would be part of airport rail link. Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said it was vital the plan continued moving forward. “The Western Rail Plan is one of the vital projects our growing city and state needs – electrifying the rail lines to the west to run more services to our booming suburbs and a step towards fast rail to Geelong and Ballarat,” she said. “It’s part of our suburban rail and road blitz that is slashing congestion, boosting services and creating thousands of jobs.” Express fast rail services on the Geelong and Ballarat lines, including full electrification of the lines, is also being explored by Rail Projects Victoria. Investigations and technical studies are being carried out to better understand existing conditions along the Melton, Werribee, Wyndham Vale and Geelong corridors. Community consultation is expected to begin later this year.
Guided by tradition Melton’s Girl Guides are hitting the streets to tempt locals with the organisation’s much-loved biscuits. Guides will set up stalls and knock on doors as part of the annual biscuit drive to fundraise for their Guiding activities. Money raised will help fund programs that empower girls and help them develop leadership and valuable life skills. Girl Guides Victoria state commissioner Lynne Emblem said Guide biscuits were more than a delicious treat. “They’re also a Guiding tradition and a way for us to support and empower girls,” she said. “Guide Biscuits have been a tradition now for over 60 years and the purchase of the biscuits by community members impacts directly on our Guides at a local level.” Melton District Guides leader Melanie Bell said the biscuit drive also served a promotion for the Guides. Ms Bell, who joined the Guides when she was about 14, encouraged her two daughters to follow in her footsteps, and hopes more local girls will join the organisation. Robbery charges
A 32-year-old Taylors Hill man has been arrested and charged following a number of incidents which occurred in Sunbury on May 7. Police allege the man and a 20-year-old from Riddells Creek were involved in a robbery on Pasley Street about 7.45am. A 22-year-old Sunbury man was assaulted and had his headphones, mobile phone and wallet stolen. It’s alleged the two men then used the victim’s credit cards to purchase goods. The Taylors Hill man has been charged with a total of 35 offences including robbery and other related offences.

The goal was simple – to create a sense of worth and belonging in the lives of the young participants. The Western Bulldogs Community Foundation’s GOAL program held weekly sessions with AFL and AFLW players and community leaders mentoring young people aged 14 to 18 years old of African background. Community engagement co-ordinator Kim Kelsey said about 30 students took part in the 12-week program, recruited from across the west. “Some of the students were recommended by teachers, but we wanted to keep it a genuine thing that they wanted to attend,” she said. Aimed at supporting the community to improve engagement, employment and

training outcomes, the GOAL program was borne from the Club’s African Action Plan in response to the panic around an ‘African gang crisis’ and the impact this has had on the community. It offered help with networking, communication skills as well as personal planning and goal setting. “They have been particularly interested in the employment opportunity aspect of things,” Ms Kelsey said. The Country Fire Authority has reminded residents to exercise caution when conducting burn offs, and continue to notify authorities before undertaking one. Acting Chief Officer Gavin Freeman said crews were kept busy last weekend attending to a number of unregistered burns. “CFA crews responded to a ridiculous number of burn offs that were left by careless landowners which meant our crews lost time with their families and their jobs fixing their mistakes,” he said. “It is important to only burn off when the conditions are right and to check the weather forecast for the day of the burn and for a few days afterwards.”

Railing against rubbish By Ewen McRae Discarded furniture and rubbish is causing dismay for users of the Melton station carpark. The station carpark, on the corner of Exford and Staughton streets in Melton South, is littered with rubbish, including along the fence line and throughout the unpaved sections. Under one tree are an old lounge chair, piles of rubbish and rotting food scraps – just metres from cars and the bus terminal. Local resident and station user Brian Ewin said the rubbish had been a big problem at the carpark for a long time. “It’s disgusting – and it’s been like that for years,” he said. “It needs a really good clean … when you walk through that area every day, you really shouldn’t have to deal with looking at all that rubbish every single time. “It just keeps accumulating. And, of course when you get a big bit of wind, it blows it all over the place and it just spreads further around. “The carpark is chock-a-block now, too, so all that rubbish just encourages everyone to chuck their rubbish on the ground. They need to clean it up, put some bins around and maintain it.” The carpark is owned and operated by Public Transport Victoria. Melton council is responsible for the nearby public toilets. A spokesperson for PTV said it aimed to do regular maintenance of all its carparks. “Station carparks managed by V/Line are regularly inspected, cleaned and maintained as part of our standard practices,” the spokesperson said. “When V/Line receives reports of large discarded or dangerous items, steps are taken to report the incident and co-ordinate removal as soon as possible. “It may not always be safe and practical for litter and abandoned items in the rail corridor

Ballan District Health and Care has appointed Rowena Clift as an interim chief executive. An independent review, which concluded in April, recommended Ms Clift take on the role while a list of candidates for a permanent position was finalised. Ms Clift has worked in healthcare for more than 25 years, including in a variety of executive positions in acute and primary care. Most recently she worked with the Western Victoria Primary Health Network. Peak pain on the fringe By Clay Lucas and Sumeyya Ilanbey Decades of under-investment in transport links on Melbourne’s fringe have had serious health impacts and more than $150 billion is needed to address the problem, according to new research. One in four residents in Melbourne’s booming fringe spends more than two hours a day in their cars, Melbourne University research has found, with residents of the city’s growth suburbs more likely than people in the rest of the city to have heart disease or obesity issues. Melton GP Marcus Watson, who often spends more than an hour stuck in crawling traffic on his way to the CBD, has experience of the growing imbalance between inner and outer Melbourne – as a doctor and an occasional commuter. Dr Watson has in recent times reduced the time he spends travelling to central Melbourne, but said the unpredictability of the commute made it a nightmare. “It might take half an hour, it might take an hour and 15 minutes,” he said. Dr Watson said he regularly treated patients with preventable illnesses such as diabetes, and has recommended they exercise regularly. But their time outside of work, he said, was generally spent on commuting long distances – or sitting idly in traffic. “This is the very time they should be going for walks, spending time with their families,” he said. The Melbourne University research, published recently, reveals an additional $160 billion would need to be spent on transport infrastructure and other services by 2031 – more than is being spent in the Andrews government’s current building boom – to

overcome the congestion costs borne by outer Melbourne’s residents. The research found “a correlation between heart disease and car use for the journey to work”, higher reporting of obesity and “lower rates of heart disease in local government areas whose residents made more use of public transport”. It says Melbourne’s population growth rate in the past 25 years has been too high for the
level of investment committed by state and federal governments. According to the study, the pain of this under-investment has largely been borne by residents in the city’s six fastest-growing outer Melbourne council areas – Cardinia, Casey, Hume, Melton, Whittlesea and Wyndham. – The Age

Melton Secondary College and Melton Specialist School will share the $5.5 million revamped facilities that include an administration building, library, allied health consulting suites and a multi-purpose hall. The hall, which features a food technology kitchen and a dining area, will be available for community use after school hours or for school events to encourage community involvement with the school. State Education Minister James Merlino was on hand to formally open the buildings last week, calling the upgrade a major win for both schools. “This exciting new education precinct will strengthen the bond between both schools while providing teachers the modern facilities they need to deliver the 21st century education students deserve,” Mr Merlino said. Local MP Steve McGhie was equally happy. “Not only will these impressive new spaces be enjoyed by students at both Melton Secondary College and Melton Specialist School, but they will also be used by the wider community,” he said. Open to a day of fun A newly opened childcare centre will embrace National Reconciliation Week this Saturday as part of a family day. Nino Early Learning Adventures in Melton will hold its family day on June 1, complete with a presentation from local indigenous elders, welcome to country and smoking ceremony. A centre spokesperson said it was a great chance to engage with the whole community in an important week. “There’s quite a large indigenous community in the area, so it’s a great chance to bring National Reconciliation Week activities into our family day,” they said. “It ties in a lot of the things we’re trying to do and gives us a chance to show the whole community what we’re all about.
“We’ll do activities with the kids throughout the week around reconciliation week, and then on the day people can come and enjoy everything that we will have.” The open day at the Reserve Road centre will also include an animal farm, face-painting, barbecue and tours of the centre. The centre currently has 128 children and a growing community around it. “Melton is different to a lot of the centres closer to the city – it just feels more communal,” the spokesperson said. Senior DriversExp Sound advice at Senior drivers expo A free initiative staged four times a year by RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety, the next Senior Drivers Expo is scheduled for Saturday, June 22, at Melton. The expo is open to anyone who is retired or thinking about retirement. RoadSafe Westgate chair Jim Giddings says his road safety group is committed to supporting older drivers to safely continue on the road. “We can all be better drivers with a few simple things like keeping up with new road laws; making sure our health is as good as can be; getting rid of bad driving habits; and keeping our cars in good condition,” Mr Giddings says. “The expo gives senior drivers the chance of a free and confidential one-on-one session with one of the four registered driving instructors in attendance. “The sessions are designed to identify any ‘shortcut’ habits drivers may have adopted during the years of driving.”

Thoroughbreds on track By Tara Murray Melton Thoroughbreds have bounced back on to the winners’ list by beating Collingwood All Stars in Big V women’s division 2 basketball. After an even first quarter at Darebin Community Sports Stadium on Saturday night, the Thoroughbreds started to find their groove. They out-scored the All Stars by seven points in the second quarter to lead by six points at the main break. The Thoroughbreds found another level in the third quarter, extending the margin to 18 points at the final break. That momentum faltered in the last quarter, but the Thoroughbreds had done enough to earn a 65-55 win. In a positive for Melton, every player got on the court. Jessica Kivimets top-scored with 17 points coming off the bench, while Stacey Procak scored 15 points. The win is the Thoroughbreds’ fifth for the season, giving them a 5-5 record. They sit in sixth spot. The Thoroughbreds’ division 2 men’s side endured a nightmare match at RMIT Sports Centre on Sunday. Starting off on the wrong foot against the RMIT Redbacks, the Thoroughbreds were in trouble early. They were nine points down at the first break and 12 points at the main break. There would be no second-half comeback by the Thoroughbreds, with the margin continuing to grow. The Redbacks didn’t let up, saving their best for last by out-scoring the Thoroughbreds by 15 points in the final quarter to win 101-69. For Melton, Deakin Pereira top-scored with 17 points, while Chris Johnson had a double-double.

Springers take table tennis title Caroline Springs is the champion of the Table Tennis Victoria Western Suburbs Plate. The Springers had a comprehensive five rubbers to two victory over Tarneit in the grand final at Loops Table Tennis in Sunshine West. Xavier Dixon was the star of the show for the Springers – the Australian under-21 champion had crushing wins in all three of his games. Dixon won 99 points on the night, while his hapless opponents could only mange 30. After Dixon’s dominance, all that was left for Caroline Springs to do was for the Poplawski boys – Mark and William – to pick up a game each en route to the title. For Tarneit, there was a lot to like this season, but it failed at the final hurdle. Reddy Tatikonda and Nandakumar Alavandar were two of the stars of the competition during the season, but could not replicate their form in the plate. Table tennis is growing in the west. More than 100 players participated in six divisions at the event Loops Table Tennis director Simon Gerada is looking forward to seeing the development of exciting talents such as Jim Findlay, Matthew Mazurkiewicz and Hannah Green. SPORT Bloods thrive on footy and fun as the wins mount up Momentum continues to grow within the Melton women’s football side. In their inaugural season, the Bloods are having a ball and starting to get wins on the board. Bloods coach Beau Beck said he is enthused by how far the side has come since the AFL Goldfields Women’s season started. “We’re still learning quite a lot,” he said. “There has been an explosion in the interest in the side at our club. “We have close to 30 players on our list now, which is amazing. Three weeks before round one, we were looking at pulling the pin.” Beck said it was pleasing how the women’s side had helped bring the junior and senior clubs together. The Bloods’ female sides all played on the same day at the same venue for the first time on Sunday, with the women’s side facing Darley. Beck said there was a big crowd at the game, in which the teams played for a boomerang trophy in recognition of indigenous round. The Bloods grabbed their third win of the
season thanks to a 8.10 (58)-2.2 (14) scoreline. Both sides hit the scoreboard in the first quarter in an even contest before the Bloods took control of the game. After quarter-time, the Bloods kicked 5.9 to two points to cruise to victory. Beck said it was a tough day for the players as they adjusted to the conditions. “It was really windy in typical Maccy Park conditions,” he said. “We had one of our under-18s, Kacie Hallmark, step up and play in her first open age game. “She played beyond her years. We’re rapt with the signs for the future.” Beck said captain Ashlee Wallis was clearly best on ground, while Telia Coverdale kicked two goals. For the Devils, Danielle Bergin and Ilana White were their best. Beck said his side would have a few challenges coming up in the next few weeks. The Bloods are in fifth place. “We’ve had a decent fixture so far,” he said. “We’ve got some tests coming up against the
likes of Redan and East Point … the Ballarat teams all seem strong.” In other results, Melton Centrals remain undefeated after a hard-fought win against East Point. Centrals trailed for most of the day, but found another level in the last quarter to win 4.13 (37)-4.6 (30). Alanna Porter kicked two goals for Centrals, while Nicole Martin, in her first game for the season, was named best. Bacchus Marsh fell short against Lake Wendouree in a low-scoring match. Cobras claim dominance By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh has bragging rights over former coach Travis Hodgson and his new side the Sunbury Lions in the Ballarat Football League. While the Cobras were short on man power, they didn’t lack courage in the 17.12 (114)-11.10 (76) victory. The Cobras had keenly anticipated the match and inflicted the damage early to secure the win. Cobras coach Peter Davey said the playing group had been looking forward to playing against Hodgson after he switched clubs in the off season. He said they were starting to gain some momentum after a slow start to the season. “It was a pretty good day,” he said. “A lot of things we’ve been working on, we’re doing for longer periods. We’ve been OK in periods, but in our bad patches, we’ve been ordinary. “After the win against Ballarat we’ve got more confidence.” The scoreboard showed the second quarter as the difference but Davey said the first quarter set up the match. While they trailed by one point at the first break, the Lions had been kicking with the wind in the opening quarter. “Five minutes into the second quarter things started to look different,” Davey said. “The scoreboard looked good.” Aaron Willitts kicked four goals for the Cobras and Jack Lalor and Jake Owen kicked three goals each. Davey said both Willitts and Owen had good games. Owen spent some time in defence as well. Other standouts were Thomas Wardell and Daniel Burton. Burton, who won the Henderson Medal last year as the competition’s best player, has continued on with that form. “From the Darley game onwards, he’s been in our best three in the last four games,” Davey said. “You don’t appreciate how much he does until you watch the video.” Davey said the most pleasing thing was that everyone contributed and won their position. The win though was slightly marred by injuries, with the Cobras left with just one player on the bench in the final quarter. It was a tough weekend for Bacchus Marsh in the Ballarat Netball League. Facing pacesetters the Sunbury Lions, the Cobras trailed early and never recovered, losing 53-29. Darley suffered a 67-31 loss to North Ballarat City, while Melton South lost to East Point 53-34. Melton had the bye.

Hillside held off a fast-finishing Westmeadows to record its best win of the Essendon District Football League division 1 season. The Sharks led for most of the day, before the Tigers came strong in the final quarter with 10 scoring shots. The Tigers though were left to rue poor kicking, with the Sharks holding on to win 13.8 (86)-12.12 (84). Stephen Syme kicked four goals for the Sharks, while Raafat Rachrache was named their best. The Sharks remain fifth, but are now just percentage outside the top four. Burnside Heights’ undefeated run came to an end in division 2, losing to the Sunbury Kangaroos.

Westside Strikers’ good form continued with a solid win against Truganina Hornets on Saturday in FFV state league 4 west. The Strikers scored once in each half to seal the 2-0 victory. The win is the Strikers third in four matches. Spring Hills suffered a 3-1 loss to Melbourne University. In state league 5 west, Melton Phoenix had a 1-1 draw with Maribyrnong Greens.

“We lost two early and were down to two rotations 10 minutes into the second quarter. “We lost another player in the third quarter.” The Cobras have a bye this week, before facing arch-rivals Darley. Davey said while the bye would give their injured players more time to recover, it wasn’t ideal after starting to gain some momentum. He said they were looking forward to the
clash with the Devils. “We learnt a lot last time we played them.” In other results, Darley had a solid win against North Ballarat City, winning 13.9 (87)-9.12 (66). Jake Edwards kicked four goals in a best-on-ground performance. Melton South had a day to forget, losing to East Point 29.22 (196)-0.5 (5).
Melton’s Vic League teams both had the weekend off. While the Vic League 2 women’s side had a the bye, their men’s side came away with a 5-0 win against Old Melbourians in a walkover. Meanwhile, Caroline Springs Vic League 3 men’s side lost 6-1 to Craigieburn Falcons. It was a better day for the Springers’ women’s side which won 3-0 against Gippsland Bulls. Burras let the good times roll By Tara Murray Diggers Rest did what it needed to do to get past Woodend-Hesket in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. It wasn’t the prettiest game from the Burras, but they held the Hawks at arms length for most of the day, winning 15.10 (100)-10.10 (70). Burras’ playing coach Jamie Lobb said it was a funny game. “It’s a tricky ground for us and we lost up their last year,” he said. “We showed some good signs at times and then had lapses and let Woodend get back into the game. “The guys applied themselves well.” Cole Laurie kicked three goals for the Burras, but it was three newcomers who impressed Lobb. Luke Delahey played his best game for the club and David Morrice and Alec Del Papa also had strong games. “The new guys are fitting in really well,” Lobb said. “You always need three or four weeks to see where they fit in with the side.” The win moves the Burras to 6-0, the only undefeated team. Lobb said they did not expect to be sitting undefeated at this stage. “We’re traditionally slow starters,” he said. “We haven’t played our best footy yet, but we’re still 6-0. “We haven’t been able to have our best side on the field either. We’ve always had four, five or six players out.”
Lobb said once they had their full list available there would be some difficult decisions to make. He said everyone who was stepping up was playing their role. “We’re in the position that not everyone is a walk-up start, where they may have been two or three years ago.” The Burras this week face Rockbank, before the challenge of playing an in-form Romsey the week after. Lobb said they will probably rest a few of the older players this week against the winless Rams. Meanwhile, a familiar face returned to the Burras colours in the reserves on Saturday. Tom Gleeson, who captained the senior team to the premiership last season, was back on field for the first time this year. Gleeson moved to Canada after last year’s grand final. Lobb said it was good to have Gleeson back around the club. “He’s back in Australia for a month, so he’s going to have a run around. “He came down and trained during the week and the boys were happy to see him back on the track.” In other senior matches at the weekend, it was a tough weekend for Melton Centrals and Rockbank. Centrals lost to Rupertswood 15.12 (102)-5.5 (35) in their most disappointing performance of the season. Dylan Weir kicked three goals in the loss. For the Rams, they suffered a 33.34 (232)-1.1 (7) loss to Romsey. Ash Gray was the best for the Rams.
