Sun sets on dream build Dozens of landowners fear they could lose thousands of dollars if a developer reneges on sales contracts for Rockbank properties. Development at The Millstone estate has been stalled since land was released for stages one and two in 2016. Buyers signed off-the-plan contracts for blocks at the Greigs Road development expecting the land to be titled in August this year. But they were last week informed by Queensland-based developer CFMG Capital that construction would be delayed until March next year – two months after sunset clauses in their contracts expire. Under current law, sunset clauses can be
exploited, with construction delays leading to termination of signed contracts of sale. Developers can then re-sell properties for higher prices. Nostra Homes managing director Anthony Caruana, who purchased five lots within Millstone and sold them on, has sought legal advice because he said that there was no assurance that CFMG Capital would let buyers keep their land. “The developer has not agreed to extend the sunset clause and has informed myself and many mums and dads that the land won’t be ready until March, 2019,” Mr Caruana said. “This would then result in many people losing their blocks. Mums and dads are all protesting on site for the developer to extend
their sunset clause. Many people will not be able to purchase another block due to the growth in the pocket … [they] will pretty much lose their dreams.” Another landowner, who asked not to be named, said he stood to lose more than $200,000. “The reason I bought there was that my wife was pregnant and I wanted to make a good investment for my son and our little family,” he told Star Weekly. “I chose to buy two lots, then encouraged our friends and family to buy lots. They are all in different positions to me … some of them first home buyers, some downsizing. “I paid $99,000 for my land and it’s now worth $200,000.” The landowner said he had already spent

$50,000 in builder fees in addition to the $5000 deposit. “They’ve been stringing us along for more than a year. I’ve been renting and I sold my family home waiting for my house to be built … all for nothing.” A CFMG Capital spokesman said it is working towards the completion and settlement of all contracted lots at The Millstone. “The project has encountered a series of unexpected technical and engineering challenges and we are continuing to work with our contractors to resolve the issues in a timely manner,” a statement read. “As with all developers, CFMG Capital is bound by the Sale of Land Amendment Bill 2018 regarding off-the-plan contract sales.”

Animal cruelty video surfaces By Esther Lauaki The RSPCA is investigating a disturbing act of animal cruelty in which a pet rabbit survived being flung against a roof and tossed off a first floor balcony. Two videos emerged on Facebook in recent weeks of a young man mistreating a white rabbit. People can be heard laughing when the animal hits the verandah ceiling in one of the clips. The incidents were believed to have occurred in Melbourne’s western suburbs and the videos were being circulated on Snapchat
and Facebook. Animal lovers condemned the young man’s actions on a Caroline Springs residents’ page. RSPCA Victoria inspectorate team leader Karen Collier said an investigation is ongoing to pinpoint the exact location and catch the people involved. This latest case in the west follows latest RSPCA data showing animal cruelty cases in Melton on the rise with 325 call-outs in the past year to June. Figures from the animal welfare organisation reveal Melton ranked seventh for the most calls about animal mismanagement in the state in

2017-18 – up 14 per cent on the previous year (279). Geelong topped the state with the RSPCA receiving 559 calls. RSPCA chief executive Liz Walker said 10,642 cruelty reports were made across the state in the past financial year. Dr Walker said localised animal cruelty
statistics helped to target the organisation’s prevention and education initiatives. “Over the last two years that we’ve released these reports, we’ve seen that many communities are shocked to learn the levels of cruelty reporting in their area and eager to see those numbers go down, just as we are,” she said. Inspectors are seeking information from the public to help identify the persons involved in the case of the pet rabbit. Foam Fest bubbles over Down Under Table tennis
Athletes and rookies of all ages took on 22 exhilarating obstacles in the 5K Foam Fest at the weekend. The fun-run made its Australian debut on Saturday at St Anne’s Vineyards in Myrniong. Participants took on unique challenges including a six-metre sky-fall drop onto a stunt bag, the world’s largest inflatable water slide, bouncy castles, mud pits and a huge supply of vegan coconut foam. Founder and president of the organisation
running the event, Jesse Fulton said he was excited to bring 5K Foam Fest to Australia. “Fun runs and obstacle course racing is the fastest growing sports category in the world and we knew Australia had a big appetite for it,” Mr Fulton said. “We have had millions of views of our videos on social media directly from Australia and people have been asking us to bring the festival Down Under. We are excited to finally launch it here and give everyone something fun, active
and different to do over summer.” The event has partnered with Make-A-Wish Australia to support Australian children facing ■ their own everyday obstacles. “With tens of thousands of people expected to participate … we hope to raise plenty of much-needed funds to help grant some truly inspirational wishes for children,” Mr Fulton said.
Moorabool council has looked to experience, with veteran councillor Paul Tatchell elected to his fourth consecutive stint in the mayoral chair. The Central ward councillor was re-elected last week, with experienced eastern ward councillor John Keogh to serve as deputy mayor. Both have served in the same positions in the past 12 months. Cr Tatchell said before he was last re-elected that that term was likely to be his final stint on council. Last week he said his priorities of securing more state and federal funding for infrastructure across the shire remain the same. Following the recent state election, Cr Tatchell said he believed the shire had been neglected by the state government. “This election was critical for us,” he said. “With nearly $30 billion being thrown around over the next 10 years … we are unlikely to get anything. “We’ve got this enormous growth and absolutely no infrastructure. “Our wish list wasn’t about what would be nice to have. “It was purely about critical infrastructure and we’ve been completely ignored. “We are part of the peri-urban region and we need to be recognised more. Love flows after cancer tragedy By Esther Lauaki Corinda Maloney was one in five million. The Bacchus Marsh mother of two died on November 3 – just two weeks after a devastating diagnosis of an extremely rare liver cancer. In recent weeks, her community has rallied around Mrs Maloney’s family. She is remembered by her brother Cameron Barratt as a devoted mother, loving wife and treasured daughter and sister. “This truly is a story of absolute tragedy,” Mr Barratt said. “In only two short weeks, Corinda’s concerns
went from everyday life issues to wondering if she would ever see her husband and children again as she bravely went in for life-saving surgery.” Mrs Maloney, 31, was diagnosed with fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma, which affects about one in five million people. “Almost all cases are caught too late, with no effective treatment options,” Mr Barratt said. “Removal of the cancer is a person’s best chance at survival. Corinda did not survive the surgery due to complications. Her memory will live on and be forever celebrated through everyone that knew and loved her.”
Mr Barratt set up the Corinda Maloney Memorial Fund online to support his sister’s family, including husband Paul and their children, five-year-old Airlie and two-year-old Heath. To date, the appeal has raised $30,000. “Six weeks prior to her passing, Corinda and her family had built and moved into their dream home in Bacchus Marsh,” Mr Barratt said. “The money will help to ease her family through an extremely difficult time and help to complete their dream home and help her children get through school.” Donate: bit.ly/2RnGahP

Boy charged after rocks hit truck By Esther Lauaki An 11-year-old boy has been charged after a truck driver narrowly cheated death when a 12-kilogram rock was hurled from a Melton overpass onto the Western Freeway, shattering his windscreen. Dash-cam footage captured the moment the large rock, which truck driver Andrew Martin described as melon-sized, was thrown from the overpass between Coburns and Station roads leaving him no time to dodge them. The 28-year-old was driving his truck, which was carrying foam, along the highway about
2.20pm on Sunday, November 25 and saw a few teenagers standing on the pedestrian overpass before the rock hit the windscreen. “I just got sprayed with shrapnel and managed to pull up safely,” Mr Martin said. He ran across three lanes of traffic in a bid to catch the teenagers, but to no avail. On Friday afternoon police said they had charged an 11-year-old boy from Melton West with reckless conduct endangering life, criminal damage and discharging a missile. Detective Sergeant Ashley Ryan said that two other boys – an 11-year-old and 12-year-old both from Melton – were also arrested over the
incident but released pending further inquiries. “One rock, which was substantial in size, between 10 kilograms and 12 kilograms, struck the windscreen of a passing truck heading in a westerly direction,” detective Ryan said. “It’s concerning because it not only could have potentially caused serious injury or death, it could have also caused an accident involving one or multiple vehicles.” Mr Martin, who is from Modella in Gippsland, said he had lost work as a result of the incident. – with The Age

Farewelled with love Teachers at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College have left a parting gift for the school’s students. A number of teachers met in secret over the past term and covered the school’s basketball court fence with hearts crocheted from different coloured yarn. The fence will soon be removed to make way for a new multi-purpose hall to be built next year. Caroline Chisholm Catholic College learning support officer Maria Vella said the concept was designed to spread a positive message to students as they left their last assembly for the year. “One of our lead teachers thought of the idea after the musical we did earlier in the year which required some crochet work,” Ms Vella said. “We thought the idea of putting love hearts up shows our appreciation for all the
hard work the students have put in over the year.” Ms Vella said the teachers hoped the message would spread beyond the school’s grounds. “Each one has two hearts put together,” she said. “The idea is that the students take one and gift one to somebody else. “So we show our love and appreciation, then they pay if forward to someone else.” The crochet element also played a significant part. In a digital, fast-paced world, the teachers believe the act of making something by hand is the complete opposite – patient, slow, imperfect and rewarding. Fans saddle up for fun The Kryal Castle arena came alive at the weekend when it hosted the Baroque Horse Festival. Gender Equity Leader of the Year: Tiff Lykke Tiff proactively encourages all members of the community to be actively involved in gridiron. She provides opportunities to women to overcome gender stereotypes on and off the field by creating a safe space for all women at the Melton Wolves Gridiron Club.

While there is a sense of sadness at the end of an era, the decision to close the VIC stemmed largely from a steady decrease in the number of visitors over the last 10 years.

Prison term for Merrimu raid

A man who planned and carried out a burglary at a rural property, where items valued at $57,000 was stolen, has been sentenced to more than two years in prison. The Ballarat Magistrates Court was told last Wednesday that Jarrod Cann and a co-accused stole two vehicles, two shotguns, more than $15,000 cash and jewellery from the Merrimu property on April 22. In sentencing Cann, Magistrate Ron Saines took into account the two stolen guns had not been located and posed a risk to the public’s safety. The cash had also not been found. Cann was prohibited from having firearms and was on bail at the time of the burglary. The court was told Cann had numerous prior criminal convictions. “By far the most prominent factor to be considered is the seriousness of the offending,” Mr Saines said. He sentenced Cann to 27 months in jail with a non-parole period of 18 months. Cann had already served 194 days pre-sentence detention. Cann pleaded guilty to 14 charges relating to crimes in April and May, including burglary, theft, petrol drive-offs, criminal damage, firearms theft, driving while disqualified, possessing methamphetamine and being a prohibited person possessing a firearm.
Kathy Lang is the name to remember. The Altona woman smashed a 12-year record at the Australian Open Memory Championships held in Melbourne last weekend. She also took third place for Australia. “I broke the 12-year national record for [remembering] 177 numbers in five minutes,” she said. “You’ve got five minutes to remember as many numbers as you can, and they come in numbers like one, six, seven, four, three – and I remembered 177 numbers in order.”

Preparing for the competition, which attracted entrants from as far as China, Japan and the US, Ms Lang hired a memory coach. “Because I’m in education and teaching and lecturing, I’m really interested in how to learn effectively,” she said. “It’s not doing this to impress anybody – it’s to demonstrate that it can be done. The human potential’s there. “The person that came first place would be studying around 12, 13 hours a day to get to that. “These are elite athletes. These people are like the superheroes – they’ve got amazing brains. “We’re looking at learning say, five or six decks of playing cards in five minutes.” Ms Lang likened her memory training to the styles of tennis legends Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

It’s all child’s play By Tate Papworth Edward Zammit is a big kid at heart – the Hillside man has been inventing toys and games for the past 25 years. Among his inventions is a Play-Doh game and the spiralight, which is on sale through Disney. After a number of successful creations, Mr Zammit is diversifying. Four years ago he came up with a concept for The Luna Moonies – magical characters who live on the moon.

Mr Zammit said the idea quickly evolved. “There’s a lot of books on fairies and bush characters, so I wanted something a bit more creative,” he said. “I wanted to initially come up with my own characters for a toy line. “But once I’d done that, I wrote books, formed a band, wrote some music and it went from there.” The Luna Moonies are now getting used to performing. “We’ve spoken to a lot of shopping centres and we’ve also performed at Luna Park a number of times,” Mr Zammit said. “We actually got to perform at their [Luna Park’s] 103rd birthday which was a great experience. We’ve also done concerts and Scienceworks and the Good Friday Appeal.” While he’s happy with the growing popularity of the Moonies, Mr Zammit is hoping to expand the renown of his creations. “We’ve just released the book so we’re hoping

that goes well and we’re also hoping to develop a TV pilot,” he said. With a quarter of a century of experience, Mr Zammit has one piece of advice for any budding inventors.

MY PLACE Melton’s Catherine Brincau strives to live the best she can and is taking locals along with her on a health journey. She chats with Esther Lauaki about her love for the community. I am a resident and have been involved in a number of community projects for many years. How long have you lived in the area? I have lived here for 18 years. What are you passionate about? Community work and weight loss. Tell us about your involvement with the Melton TOWN club. I started in 2010 and have been involved at all levels, from a general member through to club leader and board member. The group originated 50 years ago in Victoria. It’s completely different to other weight-loss groups. It becomes a friendship group. There were 80 members in the Melton area when it first started, but now there are 32 members. Collectively among those members, we’ve logged a 150-kilogram loss between April 1 to March 31. Tell us a bit about how you came to be involved with the club.
A lot of people come in with a very negative mindset … after a while it’s a like a light comes on and all of a sudden you’re in the zone. New members come in and people rejoin the group. What other hats do you wear in the community? For about four years, myself and the club have supported Relay for Life. We wanted to find another way to give back to the community so we decided to participate in the Share the Dignity Christmas appeal #itsinthebag, where we each donate a handbag filled with sanitary products and toiletries for women in crisis. At our last meeting – on Tuesday, November 11 – I was absolutely blown away with everyone’s generous donations. We filled 30 handbags! A lot of the bags were brand new and all filled to the brim with products. It was a very heartwarming sight to see everyone pitch in to help assemble the handbags. Even the men all helped. What do you love about Melton? Home is what you make of it. I love that we have parklands and I know my way around. What would you like to see improved? The bus services could be improved. Public transport is still not up to scratch.

At the time I lost my husband and I wanted to be involved in something. Originally, I lost 40 kilograms and over the years it slowly crept back, then I lost it again. Weight loss is a constant battle and goes up and down.

SPORT Bacchus Marsh lets a winning chance slip away Bacchus Marsh gave up a half-time lead against Kyneton to slip to its second loss of the Central Highlands Bowls top-grade season. At the tea break, ladder leader Bacchus Marsh led third-placed Kyneton by 15 shots and looked on track for its sixth win of the season. But Kyneton found another level late, getting in front and sneaking home for an 84 (15)-81 (3) win. Simon Cornock was the only winning skip for Bacchus Marsh, with his rink winning 23-12. Daniel Willis’ rink finished 17 apiece with Kyneton opponent Craig Vincent. Bacchus Marsh has slipped from first to second, two points behind Kyneton Golf, which beat Trentham 114 (17)-73 (1). Kyneton remains third, but is just four points behind Bacchus Marsh, with 13 points separating the top five sides. In other results, Lancefield had a big 130 (18)-79 (0) win against Gisborne Yellow,
while Gisborne Red beat Romsey 109 (16)-73 (2). Bacchus Marsh had better luck in division 2 as it came away with the win against Kyneton Golf. Barry Steenholdt and Alastair Davie both had big wins in their rinks, while Craig McAuliffe’s rink had to settle for a draw. The win keeps Bacchus Marsh in second spot behind Woodend. Diggers Rest and Kyneton had slightly bigger wins against Trentham and Kilmore respectively. In Bowls Victoria pennant, division 1, section 1, Melton continued its losing run. Having lost four weeks in a row, Melton was hoping to turn it around against Glenroy at Glenroy. Unfortunately for Melton, there wasn’t a change of fortune with the side losing 77 (16)-67 (2). Despite not having had a win since round three, Melton is sixth on the ladder, 13 points behind fourth-placed Glenroy. This week, Melton will face second-placed Sunbury. Tara Murray

Lions keep their faith By Tara Murray Melton had a much-needed win in Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south west competition on Saturday. After dropping their past two games, Lions coach Nathan Geisler said the game was a “12-point” game for them. The Lions defeated Ormond despite being tested several times throughout Saturday. Geisler said the most pleasing thing about the performance was the way they were able to respond when needed. It’s something they have struggled with at times this season. “We got into some tricky spots,” Geisler said. “We were able to recover and it was a good win for us. “It was vital to get that win.” The Lions were in trouble at 4-30-odd before some late order hitting from Prabath Priyankara and Dylan Clarke pushed the score to 177. While Geisler said it was a below par score it could have been worse. “Prabath and Dylan Clarke made 20-30-odd [each] and while it doesn’t sound like a lot, it was an extra 50 runs that proved to be important.” Ormond looked to be cruising at 2-120 before the Lions struck back. In the space of 45 runs, Ormond lost eight wicket to be all out for 165. Geisler said Ash Sweet was the destroyer with the ball, taking 5-14, bowling into the wind. The Lions sit eighth with three wins, and are percentage outside the top six. Geisler said the win was massive in the context of the season. “We couldn’t have afforded to go 2-4,” he said. “We’re now 3-3 with two winnable games before Christmas. “If we could get those two wins it would make it 5-3 and that would be ideal considering we’re played three of the top-four sides.” The next two matches are against Moorabbin and Taylors Lakes which fill the bottom two spots on the ladder. Geisler said as well as winning those two games, he would like the side to find some form with the bat. “The positive side is, we’re still not playing good cricket,” he said. “We’re all over the shop with our consistency with the batting. “We’re not cashing in, we’re making a lot of 20s and 30s. We need to get big scores.” It was a good day for the Lions, with all five sides winning. Meanwhile, Melton’s T20 campaign ended against Werribee in the first round of the knock-out competition. Dyson Stevens will return to Melton in a boost for the Ballarat Football League side. Stevens was aligned with the Bloods in 2016-17 while he played for the Northern Blues in the VFL. His VFL commitments meant he was unable to train with the side regularly and he only played two games across two seasons with the club. Next year he will play with the Bloods full-time, crossing from Western Region Football League division 1 premiers Deer Park, where he was part of the premiership team. Bloods football manager Brad Jamison said he was pleased a player of Stevens’ experience has chosen to join the club. “Dyson’s a quality player,” he said. “We didn’t see a lot of him in the two years he was aligned with us due to VFL commitments but he really enjoyed the limited time he had with us and the fact we supported his VFL ambitions, which is why he’s decided to return. “He’s got really high standards on the training track, natural leadership qualities and the versatility he brings to play forward and as a taller midfielder is going to be important for us next year.” Stevens is the second signing for the Bloods, who have also recruited midfielder Shaun Campbell. The two are expected to help the Bloods challenge for another grand final. The Bloods have also re-signed most of this year’s playing group. Royals put a shaky start behind them After a stuttering start to the season, Melton South Royals are enjoying a rich vein of good form in Victorian Turf Cricket Association Russell Pollock Shield division 5. The Royals lost their first two games but have won two of the next three, and the third of those games looked like a win before it was washed out. They will be hoping to add another win this week when they play out their game against top side Aberfeldie Park. After day one, Royals captain Paul Hetherington said the match was evenly poised. “It was a funny start,” he said. “It was pretty close all day and it’s still close.” The Royals bowled Aberfeldie Park out for 188 in the 66th over. James Robertson was the pick of the bowlers, taking five wickets. The Royals, facing 11 overs before stumps, finished on 2-34. “It’s a good wicket and we’re confident of getting the runs,” Hetherington said. “It would have been nice to be one less wicket down or no wickets down.”
Hetherington said they had been playing some good cricket in recent weeks and were confident that would continue in the second half of the Aberfeldie Park game. “We got an outright against Flemington and we were pretty confident of getting the win against Gellibrand, but it was washed out,” he said. “We would have jumped to third if we had have got that win. We’re also through to the T20 finals.” Hetherington said the key so far this season had been a more even spread of contributors across the board. Jonathon Caderamanpulle had been the vital batsman, but everyone was stepping up when needed. “Jonathon is making runs every week, but everyone is pitching in,” Hetherington said. “We’ve had one or two people stepping up when we really needed a partnership, which we haven’t been able to do in past years.” The Royals other sides have also been showing some good form, with their seconds and fourths sitting on top of their ladders.
In other results, Melton Centrals is well on its way to victory against Bellbridge. Centrals bowled Bellbridge out for 108, with Waduwidanalage Rangika and Hashan James taking four wickets each. Centrals was 2-61 at stumps. In Charles Clark Shield division 4, Sydenham-Hillside has claimed first-innings points against Caroline Springs. Caroline Springs was bowled out for 100, with Sydenham-Hillside reaching the target just before stumps, finishing the day at 4-101. The Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket north-west B T20 final has been postponed until later this month. The final between EMP/ Willy Congs and Melton Centrals was scheduled for the weekend, but with a number of players from both teams having representative commitments, the decision was made to postpone the game until December 23.
By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh’s batsmen had another day out in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts. Ladder leader Bulls never looked in trouble with the bat as they piled on the runs to easily beat Romsey. Romsey set the Bulls 205 for victory. Bulls captain-coach James Lidgett was confident they could match the target, which they did with ease, finishing 4-324. “With runs on the board, there is a little bit of pressure,” he said. “We thought one or two partnerships that we would be right.” However, it was one partnership that ended up doing most of the damage. Lidgett teamed up with opener Alex Porter, and not for the first time this season put the result beyond doubt. The two made 170 for the second wicket and Porter scored his first McIntyre Cup 100, making 102. “Alex is good to bat with,” Lidgett said. “We’ve had a couple of good partnerships and we feed off each other. “He’s coming along nicely this year and has gotten a little bit smarter and is making heaps of runs. “I couldn’t be prouder, he trains as hard as anyone.” While Porter managed to break through for his first McIntyre century, Lidgett fell short of his second of the season. He fell for 95 and said he didn’t realise how close he was to the 100. “I threw it away,” he said. “I suppose you can’t be too down making 95. “I’m more happy to get the win. I was disappointed not to be out there when we won. I went out with about 10 runs needed.” Daniel Lalor (58 not out) and Dennis O’Loughlin (32 not out) continued where Lidgett left off. He said Lalor showed he could tee off when required, giving Lidgett a few ways to use the young batsman as needed. Lidgett said the most pleasing thing about the win was how they responded when challenged on the first day. “They were very competitive and it was a good challenge last week,” he said. “I was happy that we kept fighting and we didn’t go down in the dumps when they got on top. “It’s going to happen in finals and it’s a good thing for us. “I want to be challenged.” The win keeps the Bulls undefeated and sitting on top. The Bulls face second-placed Gisborne in a two-dayer and then Woodend in a T20 match before the Christmas break.

Melton has appointed former Melton South coach Melissa Climas as its A-grade netball coach for next year’s Ballarat Netball League season. The Bloods announced last week that Climas would coach the club’s top three grades. The club said that with Climas’ knowledge and experience, it was looking forward to a promising season. Climas spent two years at Melton South, ending last year, having previously coached in the Riddell District Netball League.

Melton South Royals are through to the finals of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association T20 competition. The Royals won their final round-robin match against Sydenham-Hillside to finish with two wins in the round stage, equal with Wyndhamvale, but the Royals had a percentage advantage. Caroline Springs and Sydenham-Hillside finished with one win each.

Mathew Medcraft is on the move after one season with Diggers Rest in the Riddell District Football League. Medcraft, who was named in the RDFL team of the year, has put in a clearance to move to the Wangaratta Rovers in the Ovens and Murray League, along with his cousin, Tristan Lenaz, who had been playing at the Sunbury Lions.
