Shorten commits to west By Tate Papworth Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will make the west a personal priority should he become Australia’s next prime minister. Touring the St Albans Leisure Centre last week, Mr Shorten said he’s vested in seeing the west get its fair share. “If we form a federal government I’ll be your prime minister. I do know this area and I’m very committed to seeing the western suburbs in Melbourne get their fair share,” he said. “I’ll have an algebraic formula that’s Australia plus the west. It just means that whenever we do anything national, I’ll always be interested to see what we’re doing for here.” Mr Shorten said his party has already developed policies for immediate impact. “We are going to have universal pre-school for three and four-year-olds. That will see resources here,” he said.

“You’re a growing community with a lot of young families, we are going to properly fund schools. “For places like the St Albans North Primary School, that will literally mean for the next three years alone, hundreds of thousands of dollars more, more teachers, more electives.” “We’re going to challenge the vested interests in this country and govern Australia for the interests of the people who don’t always have their voices heard.” Mr Shorten toured the leisure centre just one week after the state government rejected the Brimbank council’s application for a $3 million Better Pools grant. “If we win the election … we’ll be in a position to look pretty seriously at the propositions you’ve set,” he said. “But we won’t leave this particular proposal [leisure centre re-development] to the election. In other words, we’ll give you a clear answer on what we can afford well in advance. “We won’t leave you guessing for long. I like the proposal. If this is what the community is telling me is a very important ask, then we will treat it with the importance you do. “It’s affordable, but not only that, it’s necessary. “I hope you take that as very favourable consideration. We’ll crunch the numbers, but I’m confident we can come to a happy landing.”

Elvie McIlvena’s eyes light up at the mention of her family. Elvie celebrated her 100th birthday last weekend with her loved ones in Melton, where she has lived for 22 years. Born in St Arnaud, she is the eldest of nine children. She grew up with four brothers and four sisters and was raised by her grandparents for part of her childhood. She married her late husband Randall who was drafted into the army immediately after their wedding at St Arnaud Presbyterian Church. Randall spent four years in the army. The couple had three children John, Ross and Norma. Sadly, their only daughter Norma died as a child and eldest son John died in January 2016. Elvie’s son Ross told Star Weekly his mother has always been a “pretty easy-going” woman. “She’s from the country, her family and friends are all country folk … it was very different when they moved to the city for work,” he said. “Mum worked helping to clean schools before she retired but she raised us children.” Elvie has one surviving brother, six grandchildren and one great granddaughter. The Melton community is rallying around a family of 10 who lost all their belongings in a devastating house fire. A mother and her nine children, including a baby, escaped the blaze at the Aruma Avenue house last Thursday. Neighbours rushed to the family’s aid and helped to evacuate the children who range between one and 20 years old. County Fire Authority crews managed to contain the damage to the garage and the front of the home. Residents from community Facebook group, Melton Residents and Surrounds, started a collection of money, clothes, food and essentials. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Meanwhile, fire restrictions are already in place for the north west region. CFA District 14 operations manager David Harris said parts of Victoria have already had grass and bushfires. Table “Residents needtennis to be prepared for the imminent fire season, in spite of recent rainfall,” Mr Harris said. “Reducing fuel loads will ensure that if a fire does occur, it has less chance of taking hold or spreading.” ■ said there was still a small Mr Harris window of opportunity to clean up. Volunteers are the lifeblood of Djerriwarrh Health Services – which is why more are needed. Chief executive Belinda Scott said that the call for volunteers was sounded after a recent recession in helping hands at Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital. Even more will be needed with the new Melton Health and Community service to open in December, Ms Scott said. “We are looking for as many Melton and Caroline Springs volunteers as possible,” she said. “We need to make sure that we have a big pool of volunteers so that we can continue to operate to our full potential. “We also want that pool to be a reflection of our diverse community, so if there are any people from minority groups that would like to put their hand up to volunteer, we would love to hear from them.” Bernice Light has volunteered for more than 25 years for Bacchus Marsh’s visitor kiosk and meals on wheels service. She is also a past employee of the hospital. Members of the Light family have long worked and volunteered within the organisation, with more than 100 years of service between them. Ms Light is one of about 214 volunteers who donate their time to the health service on PROVIDING and off and Ms Scott said they are “absolutely fundamental” to ensuring high quality service EXCELLENT for the local community. “It would be difficult for FOR Djerriwarrh to EYE CARE provide services to the community in the way THEtheLOCAL that it does without outstanding support of our volunteers,” she said. Berry good reward A Bacchus Marsh strawberry farm has won a major award for innovation. Owners of The Strawberry Forest and farm shop the Fruits of Life, Sam and Belinda Dellios, their son Sam and daughter Tanya, won the Farm Gate to Plate category of the Victorian Rural Water Awards this month. Mr Dellios said a new method of farming strawberries vertically using piping increased production, decreased inputs and reduced waste. He said growing the plants vertically meant customers of all abilities could pick their own strawberries standing up. Victorian Rural Water director Clinton Rodda praised the efforts of all the winners and said their innovative practices demonstrated
a focus on sustainable use of valuable water resources. “Congratulations to all the winners and runners-up for their willingness to try new things to create strong businesses with best practice use of their water resources,” Mr Rodda said. Meanwhile, thousands turned out for the Bacchus Marsh Strawberries and Cherries Festival last weekend. The free annual event attracts fruit lovers from all over Victoria for strawberry picking, a cherry pip-spitting competition, exploring a strawberry and cherry trail and a variety of other home grown delights. Roll call for local candidates By Esther Lauaki Melton and Moorabool voters head to the polls this weekend with a choice of 24 candidates across three electorates. Voters in the Melton electorate, which takes in towns from Bacchus Marsh to Eynesbury, will have the greatest choice with 12 nominated candidates including independents Grant Stirling, Ian Birchall and Daryl Lang. Among the independent candidates are Moorabool councillor Jarrod Bingham as well
as Melton mayor Bob Turner and councillor Sophie Ramsey. Former Ambulance union boss Stephen McGhie was a last-minute nomination for Labor after the endorsed candidate Justin Mammarella left the race in recent weeks. Ryan Farrow will run in Melton for the Liberals, Harkirat Singh for Greens, Victor Bennett for the Democratic Labour Party, Ron Guy for the Victorian Socialists and Tania Milton for the Animal Justice Party.
Sitting independent MP Don Nardella is not running. There are four candidates nominated for the safe Labor seat of Kororoit which includes Burnside, Burnside Heights Ravenhall and Rockbank, parts of Caroline Springs, Mount Cottrell, Plumpton and Truganina. Incumbent Labor MP Marlene Kairouz will contest the seat against the Liberals’ Golam Haque, Greens candidate Rohan Waring and the Animal Justice Party’s Katherine Divita.
In Buninyong, which includes Ballan, Bungaree, Buninyong, Elaine, Gordon, Lethbridge, Mount Egerton and Maddingley, there are eight candidates. They are Andrew Kilmartin for the Liberals, Michaela Settle for Labor, Linda Zibell for the Greens, Jane McKendrick for the Victorian Socialists and Wendy Morrison for the Animal Justice Party. Lindsay Watters, Dianne Colbert and Brendan Eckel are all running independently. Incumbent Labor MP Geoff Howard is not running.
Melton racer is No.1 Phonsy Mullens has brought home a speed boat racing world championship title after a decade chasing the crown. The Melton V8 Superboat driver and the Ramjet Racing team won the Penrite UIM World Series at Cabarita Beach in New South Wales earlier this month. The world title is contested every three years, with the Ramjet Racing team having competed in the US, New Zealand and Australia before claiming the silverware this year. Mullens said it was the first time in 20 years an Australian had won the premier class. “Finally, to win a world championship after coming so close – twice I was No.2 in the world,” he said. “I probably had my shot to win at least one of those times, with a $2 part costing me the win. But first past the post wins. You’ve got to get the boat across the line and you’ve got to be able to drive it the whole day and get the job done.”
Mullens said that to take the cup from five-time world champion New Zealand driver Peter Caughey made the victory even sweeter. “We definitely didn’t leave much on the table in the final, but water conditions dropped and there were a lot of boats getting spat out and people going the wrong way and running aground,” he said. “It was pretty hard … Peter Caughey has been a fantastic world champion. Lance Corporal James Leonard Rolls and Private Hedley Roy MacBeth were caught in a hideous storm of high explosives. The two young men would never see their wives, their children or their friends again. They simply went missing near the war-ruined village of Bullecourt, northern France. It was 101 years ago. Two years ago their remains were discovered by two farmers digging in a field. Since then, their identities have been painstakingly pieced together by Australia’s small and world-leading forensic military unit, Unrecovered War Casualties-Army. Last week, the men were finally granted a funeral and buried with full military honours. Neither could have imagined that a Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove – a distinguished soldier himself – would attend the funeral, along with Australian ambassadors to France and the OECD, the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Darren Chester, and Labor frontbencher Warren Snowdon. A gathering of descendants of those lost soldiers, some of whom had supplied the DNA to help identify them, flew to France too. The funeral was held at the Queant Road Cemetery near the village of Buissy in northern France, where Private MacBeth and Lance Corporal Rolls will be among 2377 other soldiers buried beneath rows of headstones. Rolls, from Prahran, was aged 24 when last seen by his mates. He had a wife, Emily, and they had a daughter, Laura, aged two. Joan Connor, a grand-niece of Lance Corporal Rolls, said although the army had

concluded he had died at Bullecourt on May 3, 1917, his family never gave up hope. “James lived on in their hearts and in their stories,” she said. The DNA of her sister, Irene Darby helped identify Rolls. Robert MacBeth, of Ballan, submitted his DNA to help the army identify his long-missing ancestor. He was among the family members who flew to France for the funeral. “The whole thing has been amazing,” Mr MacBeth said. Hedley MacBeth, born in Launceston, was 31, and married to Bessie. They had a daughter, Mary, aged 9, and a son, Robert, 5, and the family lived in North Melbourne when the First World War took him away. Rolls and MacBeth were members of the 24th Battalion of the Australian Imperial Force. On May 3, 1917, the men and their mates were trying to get back to a safe area after taking part in the furious fighting that would become known as the Second Battle of Bullecourt.

Rolls and MacBeth took shelter in a trench on the southern side of a railway embankment, the “jumping off” point for the attack. Numerous witnesses gave evidence later about what happened next, and their accounts were filed by the Australian Red Cross Society’s Wounded and Missing Enquiry Bureau. A Private T.J. Handley, declared that MacBeth was with Rolls and another soldier,
W.H. Stanton, “when an H.E. [high explosive] shell exploded in the centre of them, killing [Rolls] instantly and MacBeth and Stanton”. And there, buried in the ruins by the Bullecourt railway embankment, lay the bodies until, almost a century later, two of them were discovered by farmers digging in their field.

The Jack Russell sustained a punctured lung, neck and spinal injuries and wounds to her legs – the neck wound so deep her microchip was lost in the attack. But she is on the mend after two intensive surgeries. “She is such a fighter and with the help of the magnificent staff at U-Vet in Werribee,” Ms Blacklaws said. “She has come a long way. “Her injuries with stitches are healing really well … her left side is not as great and she’s not using her legs yet but we hope that with physio she will be fine.” Ms Blacklaws called for public assistance in finding the owner who lost control of the three dogs that were all on leads at the time of the incident.

“My husband wasn’t sure what breed the three dogs were but described them as very big dogs,” she said. Ms Blacklaws is urging anyone with information about the attack on October 30 at about 6pm along Sovereign Boulevard near the park to contact Melton council on 9747 7200.

Match made in heaven From the outset, Alex and Marie Ellard of Taylors Hill were an unlikely couple. She was a city girl, and an only child and still young when she lost her mother to tuberculosis. He was a country boy from the tiny Wimmera town of Rupanyup, the youngest of nine children. However they have proven to be a match made in heaven. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last week, reminiscing on many happy times. Just whom proposed remains the subject of debate. Marie says the couple were talking one day and Alex referred to something happening “after we get married”, prompting her to ask
“When are we getting married?” Alex said finding a date also proved difficult. “I said ‘Are you free one Saturday in November?’ And she said a couple of dates, but I said I couldn’t because I was playing cricket on those days,” he joked. The couple met after Alex moved into a boarding house in Maribyrnong Road, Ascot Vale. They remained at the boarding house until they built a home in Essendon, where they remained for 43 years. It was there they raised their four children, before moving into a retirement village in Taylors Hill 13 years ago. Tate Papworth

Libs pledge intersection upgrade By Tate Papworth The notorious intersection at Sunshine Avenue and Melton Highway will be removed under a state Liberal government. Liberal candidate for Niddrie Ben Reeson toured the intersection last week and said the roundabout needed to go. “Whether I’m speaking to local residents or businesses they all tell me that traffic is getting worse and it’s impacting on their daily lives,” Mr Reeson said. “Removing the intersection at Sunshine
Avenue and Melton Highway will help residents get around our local area and ease the congestion crush. “You come off the highway and end up getting hit, nearly getting hit, or stuck in traffic for ages. “You don’t want to spend hours stuck in traffic when you leave work.” Mr Reeson said traffic volumes on Sunshine Avenue and Melton Highway have increased in recent years, substantially increasing the risk for motorists and pedestrians. He said removing the intersection would

also benefit business by allowing people to get between jobs more quickly. Opposition spokesman for Roads and Infrastructure David Hodgett also toured the site and said the public had made its voice heard. “Many of our intersections have seen little
change since the 1990s, so it’s time to upgrade them for 2018 and beyond,” Mr Hodgett said. “You come off the freeway and in a very short distance you come across a bottleneck. “This will be one of the intersections included in our policy. “We’ll dip lanes under so traffic will come off the freeway and continue to flow through this intersection without having to stop.” If elected, the LNP will invest between $4.1-$5.3 billion to remove 55 of Melbourne and Geelong’s most dangerous and congested intersections.
A great life celebrated Vance Hilton lived by the mantra, “service before self”. The long-serving Melton Rotarian, athlete and public servant died in September after a battle with Parkinson’s. His wife, Olga, wants to continue his charitable legacy through an auction next February to raise money for Parkinson’s Victoria. A Rotarian for nearly 40 years, Mr Hilton served at every level of the organisation locally and internationally after joining the Stawell branch in 1979. His community service in other groups and sports clubs locally and across the state was just as extensive. In 2006, Mr Hilton was honoured with an Order of Australia Medal for his service to youth, athletics and a range of charitable organisations. Son-in-law Anthony Walsh said Mr Hilton
had led “a life well lived in the service of others”. “Vance led a wonderful life accompanied by Olga and crammed more into his 83 years than some believe humanly possible,” Mr Walsh said. “His commitment to Rotary, his travel, his work at home and his devotion to Olga are traits of a man who lived his life to the full. “He was a man who was trustworthy and had old-fashioned values where his word was his bond. Taking it in his stride Brett Williams couldn’t imagine walking in the shoes of anyone diagnosed with brain cancer but he hoped that by walking from Wodonga to Bacchus Marsh – he could help make someone’s life a little easier. Mr Williams decided to tackle the 375-kilometre trek over 10 days in September to raise money for Faith Brewer who is battling two brain tumours. Ms Brewer, 42, was diagnosed last year. Attempts to remove the tumours have been unsuccessful. Ms Brewer has been unable to work since her diagnosis and, with two primary school-aged daughters, her battle is taking its toll on the Newport family.
Mr Williams last week presented the family with $20,000 he raised through various fundraisers as well as the walk. “I just want to help people – that’s just me,” he said. “And I wanted a challenge to do a walkathon and raise money for someone who’s pretty crook.” Ms Brewer said she was overwhelmed by the support from a stranger. The money will go towards medical bills including the weekly specialists visits. She said the money raised by Mr Brewer’s walkathon would help the family, which had taken a big financial hit. We’ve lived in Caroline Springs for 14 years. I’ve also been a member of a local running group for about two years. What do you like best about the area? It’s just beautiful. It’s family friendly, we go for walks around the lake. It’s nice to be out and see other families in the area. It’s also great for keeping fit. There’s lots of paths, which is really important for families. What could be done to improve it? I think the bike paths could be better connected. A lot of the paths just end and you have to go back. If they were connected, we could go to places like the city or St Kilda, which would be really handy for the community. So you’re doing the Eureka Stair Climb? I am. I actually did it last year and decided to do it again this year.
Your husband is doing it with you? He is. He’ll probably blitz it up there before me, but that’s OK – as long as he’s getting fit and healthy, as well, that’s all that matters. It’s all about having fun. I’ll be happy to complete it again.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir says it’s a good bang for your buck at Batterbing Batterbing is in a Douglas Parade premises that has been home to fish and chips for a long, long time. Decades, I’m guessing. In any case, these days – under its newish name – it’s being run by John McMonagle, whose work we loved so much at Dough! in Newport. His Williamstown location is superior – it’s handily placed for more drop-in and foot traffic. And that’s great – it means more people can enjoy the super work being done by John and his team. The place remains very much an old-school fish and chip shop, with rudimentary dine-in facilities – a bench and stools inside, a few tables and chairs on the footpath outside. But none of that matters. Here be made – and happily consumed – what are, in our opinions and experience, the best fish and chips in the western suburbs. SPORT Teen’s golden age of track The hard work Frank Mazza has put in during the off season is starting to pay off. In his first two competitions of the track and field season, Mazza has claimed five gold medals. First, the 13-year-old competed in the School Sports Victoria Secondary Track and Field Championships in late October. Having missed out on qualifying for the event, through being away at another competition, he represented his school Brookside College in just one event, the aged 12-13 boys javelin. He claimed gold, throwing five metres further than second place. Two weeks later, Mazza competed at the 2018 Vic All Schools Track and Field Championships, again representing his school. He claimed gold in the under-14 javelin, long jump, triple jump and 90-metre hurdles. The Caroline Springs resident said he was unsure how he was going to go at both competitions.
“The season had only just started,” he said. “It was really good fun. I was really happy and you could tell that all the hard work I had been doing had paid off.” The Vic All Schools Track and Field Championships represented the first time he had competed over the 90 metre hurdles. Despite this he was able to taste instant success. He won the long jump and also jumped a personal best in the triple jump. Mazza said he had been doing a lot of work in the off season. He trains with Sonja Kiernan and her crew at Proactive Athletic Coaching and Development, as well with Tim Golder at Keilor Athletics Club. “I’ve been trying to get my fitness up by doing laps of the oval,” he said. “I’m feeling more fit.” He said he would look to continue to build across all his events and look to improve on his long distance running in preparation for multi-event competitions. Next up is the 2018 Australian All Schools
Track and Field Championships in Cairns next month, where he will compete in the javelin, triple jump, long jump and 90 metre hurdles. Having won three silvers at the same event 12 months ago, he has one aim this time round. “Hopefully I go better than last time and I’m aiming for gold.” Mazza is the November nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. Mazza will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes to assist him in achieving his sporting goals. Tara Murray
Lions relish T20 switch By Tara Murray Darley’s love of the T20 format has continued with a second straight win in the Ballarat Cricket Association – this time against Golden Point. The Lions, last season’s T20 champions, have won both their T20 matches this season. For Lions captain-coach Michael Alexander, the wins are a good way to build confidence after a tough start to the season. “It is a start – to get a little bit of success and momentum,” he said. “It’s nicer than losing. We had a bit of confidence coming on the back of last year. We executed really well.” He said the switch to T20 had been good for the team. “In the one-dayers we didn’t have any luck,” he said. The star on Saturday against Golden Point was import Danza Hyatt, playing his first game for the Lions. That came after their other import, Hasitha Wickramasinghe, arrived in time for round five, with both players experiencing visa issues. Alexander said it wasn’t an ideal lead-up for Hyatt, who arrived during the week. “He had 70 hours in transit … he had to catch four flights,” Alexander said. “To bat through the innings after bowling his four overs and fielding was really good. He’s a class player, a class above, and it showed through.” Hyatt scored 76 from 56 balls as the Lions made 2-121 off 18.4 in reply to Golden Point’s 8-118. Dayle Locke and Ben Longhurst took two wickets each for the Lions. Alexander said the bowling group had done a great job earlier in the day, but they had let themselves down with their fielding at times. But he said that in the end it was a pretty easy win. “A score of 118 is a bit below par on that wicket,” he said. “But in T20, I think anything 100 plus you are in the game. “We had a great start at 0-60 and once we got to that point we were able to cruise at the end. “We didn’t accelerate – we just did what we had to do to get the win.” The win moves the Lions to 2-5. They are eighth on the ladder. They will face Napoleons-Sebastopol in the final round of the T20 matches this Saturday. Alexander said finals were not something they were focusing on, given their 0-5 start to the season. “Finals aren’t off the table – mathematically we’re still a chance,” he said. “The focus is playing better week to week and focusing on how we want to play. AFL Goldfields has appointed Kim Bailey as its netball manager for next season. Bailey previously held the role and has been involved with AFL Goldfields for four years, before moving to Netball Victoria earlier this year as an umpire and coach education manager. Bailey decided she liked a more hands-on role than her previous role offered. Grace Bibby, who took on the netball manager role this year, will take on another role within AFL Goldfields.

The Lions never had any issues, getting out to a big lead early and extending it throughout the game, winning 113-69. Jordan Kirk had a big night out, scoring 30 points while Billy Feben scored 24 points as five players scored double figures. The win is the Lions sixth in eight matches.

AFL draft spotlight on young guns from the Jets The Western Jets expect to see a number of their stars step up to the AFL after this week’s draft, with Zak Butters and Xavier O’Halloran topping the list. Despite missing half the season following shoulder surgery, Butters is expected to hear his name called out in the first round on November 22, and Jets talent manager Jy Bond said there’s a good reason so many rate him so highly. “What stood out for me with Butters is the fact he was able to play through that shoulder injury and play to a high standard,” Bond said. “He went through the Vic Metro side playing injured and showed he could cope. He’s got a slight frame, but he showed he’s tough and courageous which is what really stood out for me. “I still think he’ll go in the top 15 from all reports, and he’s a fantastic character and a good kid so he’ll work hard when he gets into an AFL system.” A slick mover with good ball use and a big
tank, Bond said he could see him being used as an outside midfielder at the start of his career, as well as plenty of time up forward. O’Halloran enjoyed a strong season for the Jets, Vic Metro, and his school side, captaining all three in a sign of his leadership potential at the next level. On top of a string of good results at the draft combine – finishing in the top 10 in the sprint, YoYo, 2km time trial, kicking test and placing second in the agility test – Bond said he had huge upside for any club that picks him up. “He is just a leader, a very mature kid,” Bond said. “We had multiple times this year where we needed a lift, and he was the one to give us that. He’s got a ready made body for the AFL so he’ll be eyeing off a spot in the midfield somewhere I would think. “Personally I think his leadership sets him apart from others. At that level everyone can play, it’s a matter of how well they will fit in
the system, so if you’ve got a strong character it takes a lot of the guesswork out for clubs. I think it’s just as important as the skill set.” Bond also highlighted Western Bulldogs academy prospect Buku Khamis as a potential draftee, with the former refugee come key defender a chance to make it onto the national stage. “His athletic profile is second to none, and he’s had a very strong year,” Bond said. “There’s a fair chance that the Bulldogs will bid on him at some stage, and he deserves to be on an AFL list either at the Bulldogs or as a rookie somewhere.” Hard running Daly Andrews is also an outside chance to be snapped up, according to Bond. Centrals star a big hit By Tara Murray Andrew Cristofaro’s rich vein of form with the bat has continued for Melton Centrals. After smashing 157 in Centrals previous match against Jacana to help his side claim an outright victory, Cristofaro was in the thick of the action again on Saturday against Barkly Street Uniting in their Victorian Turf Cricket Association Russell Pollock Shield division 5 clash. Cristofaro smashed 214 as Centrals made 8-435 from their overs. Centrals captain-coach Adam Hulett said watching Cristofaro in full flight was a fine sight. Saturday’s knock was the second time in successive matches he topped his previous highest score. “He’s hit nearly 400 runs in two weeks,” Hulett said. “The first two or three matches, he didn’t get many runs, but we knew that he wasn’t far away. “It’s an absolute pleasure to watch … bowlers struggle to bowl to him.” Against Jacana, Cristofaro was the only batsman to get beyond 20. By contrast, against Barkly Street Uniting he had plenty of mates chipping in – something reflected in the massive score. Hulett said the openers put on 104 for the first partnership, Connor Poulton scoring 26 and Matthew Goatley, promoted up the order due to an unavailability, hitting 78. “There were a couple more 30s and 40s, but most of the time we were just trying to get Cristofaro on strike,” Hulett said. With Barkly Street Uniting sitting one place below Centrals on the ladder, Hulett knows they will need to buckle down to get the win. He said they would look to get the first innings points sewn up before considering anything else. A win would continue a good start to the season for Centrals, who sit second. Hulett said the side was benefitting from player depth. “Players have been available,” he said. “We had a lot of players out in the first half of last year. We struggled to get that consistency we needed.” Melton South Royals are also looking on track for another win. Facing Gellibrand, the Royals made 263, bowled out in the 61st over. Devils delight in signing former Blue Darley has secured the signature of former Carlton player Nick Graham for next year’s Ballarat Football League season. Graham, who played 48 games in six years with the Blues, fielded a number of offers to continue his football career after being delisted, eventually choosing the Devils. Devils coach Heath Scotland said Graham was the one player they targeted once they knew he was available. Scotland and Graham are former Carlton teammates. “Nick is certainly a quality bloke and fantastic player, who should still be playing AFL, in my opinion,” Scotland said. “He met with a number of other clubs and had offers from VFL clubs, but he is done with that part of his football. “He wants to enjoy his football and we’re happy he’s chosen us.” Having played with Scotland isn’t the only connection Graham has with the Devils. His brother, Brian Graham, has played with the Devils for the past two years and has signed on for next year. Scotland said the brothers had played with each other once before. “They played a game together when Nick was younger,” Scotland said. “It’ll be interesting to see them go head to head. I’ve said Brian is the best player in the competition, but I’m sure Nick will give him a run for his money. “I might have to police it – that they will have to kick to other players besides each other.” Another brother, Chris Graham, played for the Devils in the 2017 premiership before playing with Springbank in the Central Highlands Football League. He played just nine games – ongoing effects from concussion causing him to miss several games. Scotland said he was unsure whether Chris would be playing any football next year, but would love him to return to the club if he pulled on the boots again. Scotland said Darley was continuing to talk with potential recruits, but said the main focus had been on retention. He said ruckman Dylan Reid was leaving after one season to return to Queensland, while Rhys Ellis was looking at travelling next year.
