Caravan plan dumped By Sumeyya Ilanbey Plans for a camping and caravan park in Diggers Rest have been shut down following serious concerns about the site becoming a “stealthy” residential development and “irreversible” impacts on nearby properties. Dean Slaviero lodged a planning application earlier this year with Melton council to build a camping and caravan park on an 18-hectare site at 1376 Calder Highway, Diggers Rest. Mr Slaviero proposed building 85 camping sites, an office, 30 visitor carparking spaces and recreational facilities. He also wanted to remove indigenous wallaby grass scattered throughout the site and tree violet shrubs. But Melton councillors last week refused to issue him a planning permit in line with the officer recommendation and 140 objections the council received to the application. Diggers Rest residents had raised a number of concerns about the application, including fears the site would attract permanent residents, devalue nearby properties and impact on the rebuilding of the heritage-listed Diggers Rest Hotel on an adjoining site. In their report, council officers said a camping and caravan park was not in line with the objectives of the green wedge zone in which the site is located. “A camping and caravan park should be located further from an urban growth boundary to maintain the distinct character of Diggers Rest township, the integrity of the urban growth boundary and the landscape values of the green wedge urban interface,” the council report stated. Melbourne Airport, one of the objectors to the application, raised concerns about the location being affected by increased aircraft noise. It also said it was “not satisfied” with the acoustic work undertaken by the applicant. The council report stated: “Of major concern to objectors is the potential for the subject site being used for residential purposes, raising the potential for residential development by stealth. “Given that there is no ability to limit the length of time that camping and caravan park sites can be occupied, there is always the potential for them to become sites for low-cost, long-term accommodation.” Mr Slaviero told Star Weekly he was talking with his lawyers and “considering all options”. “I’ve put a years’ worth of effort in this,” Mr Slaviero said. “I’m trying to do something positive for the Diggers Rest community to attract tourism … the Diggers Rest hotel will offer luxury accommodation and I was hoping to offer mid-budget accommodation.”

Recycling machine a real bottler By Sumeyya Ilanbey Reverse vending machines could be trialled in Melton in a bid to reduce the amount of rubbish heading to landfill. Mayor Bob Turner moved a notice of motion at last week’s council meeting asking officers to investigate trialling the program and the costs associated with it. Cr Turner told Star Weekly that Melton residents he had spoken with supported the idea of reverse vending machines. “There are so many bottles and cans that end
up in the tip … so this is just a case of trying to encourage people to recycle,” Cr Turner said. “I believe this is something we should investigate, to get some background on it, if it’s feasible, and if it is, it will be fantastic.” Nearby Wyndham council was the first Victorian council to introduce reverse vending machines in late 2016. Wyndham city economy, innovation and liveability director Peter McKinnon said the council “wholeheartedly” encouraged others to jump on board and introduce reverse vending machines.
The machines are slightly different to container deposit schemes, in that they offer rewards such as discounts at local stores, entries into major prize draws and donations to charity instead of cash. “Council allocated $150,000 for this initiative over three years and in the 2017-18 year 46,031 bottles and cans were deposited through the reverse vending machines,” Mr McKinnon said. “The internal technology of each machine can identify when a contaminated item has been deposited and will reject it. This means
that only plastic and aluminium bottles and cans can be deposited.” Pressure has been mounting on the state government to introduce container deposit schemes. Victorian Greens deputy leader Nina Springle said the state government needed to commit to a statewide solution. “We need support and direction coming from state and federal governments, and we’re not getting it,” Ms Springle said. The state government was contacted for comment.

Melton residents are generally pleased with the council. The findings of the state governmentinitiated JWS Satisfaction Survey 2018 and the council-initiated Metropolis Household Satisfaction Survey 2018 were presented at last week’s council meeting. Melton council scored 61 out of 100 for its overall performance in the JWS survey – slightly higher than the state average of 59, and 59 for its ‘overall direction’ – again higher than the state average of 52. But it was the council’s customer service that performed highly – scoring 73. In their report, council officers said 15 per cent of surveyed residents had identified sealed local roads as needing improvement. Other areas that require improvement were public safety and traffic management. Perception of safety at night in the municipality scored well below the 2016 results in the council-initiated survey. Council was given an average score of 5.34 out of 10 this year, down from 6.36 in 2016. “Safety across the board improved a little this year, recovering some but not all of the declines recorded last year,” the council report stated. The Metropolitan Household Satisfaction Survey’s findings on customer service mirrored the JWS survey findings, with customer service scoring an eight out of 10. “The JWS Satisfaction Survey results indicate that council is performing comparatively well overall when measured against both state and interface council scores,” the council report stated.

Rental trial provides hope By Sumeyya Ilanbey A program to help young people at risk of homelessness get a foot in the door in the private rental market has been hailed a success. Hope Street Youth and Family Services has piloted the Hope to Home program in Melton and Whittlesea for the past two years. In that time it has helped 72 young people (including 27 dependent children) lease a home, with none defaulting on their payments. Chief executive Donna Bennett said research undertaken by Victoria University “overwhelmingly” found the Hope to Home model worked and could be replicated elsewhere. As part of the program, Hope Street Youth and Family Services signed up as co-leasees, for a period of six months, with young people. This allowed landlords to have peace of mind, Ms Bennett said, and young people to build a rapport with real estate agents. “We could see that with very little public housing and virtually no other form of social housing for young people, private rentals were the option,” Ms Bennett said. “However the feedback we were getting from young people was that they weren’t being accepted in private rentals.” With the support of Woodgrove Shopping Centre, Raine and Horne, Melton council and Gandel Philanthropy, Hope to Home demonstrated the success that could come from organisations working together to help vulnerable people, according to Ms Bennett. Hope Street is working with the Department
of Health and Human Services to fund the project, which costs about $6000 per year, per person, with hopes of rolling it out elsewhere in the state. Ms Bennett said the pilot showed that one-on-one case management support for young people and offering “flexible” brokerage funds that could be spent on everyday items was paramount.

“The other thing we’ve learned is that it is important to have a dedicated investment for building and nurturing relationships with real estate agents to create access to private rentals for young people, but also local businesses to create employment and training opportunities,” Ms Bennett said. Victoria University’s Dr Peter Gill said by working with local organisations, the program was also a way to reduce the stigma around homelessness. “It’s a unique program in that it tackles homelessness at an individual, family and community level and there are very few, if any, programs like it,” Dr Gill said. “Anything we can do to reduce the stigma helps with young people’s interpersonal relationships, helps them find rentals, apply for rentals, and be successful and maintain their rentals.”

Year 11 students Ebony and Abby and year 12 student Johnanne, won the Secondary Schools Squash Competition’s senior girls finals earlier this month, beating Templestowe College, 2-1. For Ebony and Abby, this is their fifth-straight finals win. Melton Secondary College sports co-ordinator Gerard Darcy said he was
proud of the students, who were “all-round sports girls, good at everything”. “The girls were determined to reverse the results and beat Templestowe College [after losing to them in the first round],” Mr Darcy said. “They were really impressive and determined.” Mr Darcy said the school promoted a range of sports, encouraging students to try their hand at everything. Stranger gives mum faith By Sumeyya Ilanbey On an average Wednesday in September last year, Faith Brewer complained of a headache. She didn’t think much of it. But later that night, Ms Brewer, 42, had a “really big” seizure and was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in an ambulance. Following scans, doctors identified two brain tumours sitting on the primary motor area in her brain. Attempts to remove the tumours have been unsuccessful. “I have really bad epilepsy [as a result], so I can’t drive,” Ms Brewer said. “I’ve got a big limp, my right side is shaky, my leg is shaky and I feel horrible. “I’ve had seizures often since Christmas. I might go a week without any, but then have three in a day.” Ms Brewer has been unable to work since her diagnosis and with two primary school-aged daughters, life has been turned upside down for the family. Medical bills, including the weekly specialists visits and expensive medicines, are starting to take a toll on the Newport family. When Bacchus Marsh man Brett Williams heard of Faith’s story, he was touched. It spurred him to take action and raise money for this “beautiful” family. Although he can’t imagine walking in the shoes of someone diagnosed with brain cancer, he’s decided to walk 340 kilometres to raise awareness of the insidious disease and funds for the Brewer family. Mr Williams will walk from Wodonga to Bacchus Marsh from September 20-29. “I wanted to do something to help [Faith],” Mr Williams said. “I just want to help people – that’s just me. And I wanted a challenge to do a

walkathon and raise money for someone who’s pretty crook.” Ms Brewer said she was overwhelmed by the support from a stranger willing to take on a mighty challenge. “I’m at home a lot – I won’t be able to work again,” Ms Brewer said. “I can’t drive and that impacts on the family a
lot … all the drugs are expensive, I’m a zombie … I have to sleep most of the day.” She said the money raised by Mr Brewer’s walkathon would help the family, which had taken a big financial hit. Melton budget funding call Do you need money for a community project? Or maybe you’ve identified a road that’s in desperate need of upgrades. Melton council is preparing its 2019-20 budget and wants to hear from the community about what it believes should be included. Councillors and council officers will be at two budget engagement sessions next month to speak with, and listen to, residents about projects they believe should be funded next year. Funding suggestions for community projects, sports clubs and community groups are being sought. Melton mayor Bob Turner is calling on residents and local groups to attend a session and have their say. “We are kicking off the budget planning early this year so all our residents have plenty of time to submit their ideas,” he said. Community groups wanting a piece of the 2019-20 budget pie are being urged to emphasise “community need” and “community benefit” in submissions. Submissions must be made online, but those wanting to present their ideas at the budget engagement sessions must indicate their intention to do so online. The sessions will run from 6.30-9pm on Wednesday, September 19, at Melton Civic Centre, 232 High Street, Melton; and from 6.30-9pm on Thursday, September 20, at Caroline Springs library, 193 Caroline Springs Boulevard. Diggers Rest estate refused By Sumeyya Ilanbey A proposal to subdivide a five-hectare block in Diggers Rest into 93 lots, with only one access point into the estate, has been knocked back. Veris Australia applied to Melton council to subdivide the land at 44-50 and 64-74 Old Calder Highway – behind Houdini’s cafe and the post office – and provide a variety of lot sizes ranging from 300 to 600 square metres. In refusing to grant a planning application, Melton councillors raised concerns about the lack of disability-friendly pedestrian access from the railway station to the estate and
providing only one access point for 93 houses. Watts ward councillor Michelle Mendes described the proposal as “overdevelopment” and inconsistent with the surrounding areas, and moved the motion to refuse a permit. There were 12 objections to the application, with residents citing traffic congestion, lot size and density and potential flooding from the proposed drainage reserve to the adjoining property at 52-62 Old Calder Highway. But council officers recommended a planning permit be approved. In their report presented at last week’s meeting, officers said while they acknowledged
the grounds of objection the concerns raised have been, or could be, addressed through permit conditions. In addressing traffic congestion concerns, council officers said this could be mitigated with a standard T intersection at Old Calder Highway. “The [independent] review has found that the internal design of the subdivision meets all relevant requirements and is appropriate from a traffic perspective,” the council report stated. “The report also recommends the removal of a section of car parking adjacent to the frontage of Houdini’s cafe to improve driver sight lines.”
Council officers said the applicants had submitted a stormwater management strategy, which identified that the size of the drainage reserve would be able to accommodate a wetland basin without any adverse flooding. “The proposal is consistent with state and local planning policies,” the report stated. “The subject land is existing residential zoned land directly opposite Diggers Rest railway station and in proximity to existing community and social infrastructure.” A Veris Australia spokesman said their client was receiving advice and considering all their options.
Head back to Rockbank Geoffrey Harrison remembers the earlier days of Rockbank Primary School, when it was on a block of land off the Western Highway. He was part of a second generation of Harrisons attending the school. His children have been and gone through the same school doors, and now his grandchildren are attending. Mr Harrison’s youngest grandchild will start prep at Rockbank Primary School, now at Wescott Parade, next year. The school will be celebrating its 150th anniversary later this year, and principal Darryl Spiteri is calling on alumni to join the festivities. There will be a photo display and opportunities to rekindle and catch up with old friends and teachers. A 25-year-old time capsule will also be opened. “I can tell you about some things that are
static and haven’t changed,” Mr Spiteri said, when asked about the changes over the years. “The Harrisons have at least four generations of family members who came through the school … and we’ve also had a teacher – Sue Mundie – who’s been here for 25 years.” Mr Spiteri said one of the biggest changes at the school – other than the shift from Western Highway to Wescott Parade – was the demographic. “It’s become very multicultural and diverse in recent years,” he said. Crowded houses lament By Sumeyya Ilanbey When Samantha moved into her dream home in Taylors Hill 13 years ago, she knew an empty paddock behind her would inevitably be developed. But what ensued has bitterly disappointed the Howqua Way resident, who asked that her real name not be used. One of the houses being built in newly created Tambo Crescent, backing on to Samantha’s Howqua Way home, is a double-storey house that overshadows her and her neighbour’s property. Although the house is being built to comply with the requirements of the Building Act, Samantha says “it’s just not right”. The side of the house backs on to the properties of three Howqua Way homes. Complying with legislation, it is more than 1.25 metres from the fence and its windows are frosted. But Samantha says that is too close to her backyard and she fears she no longer has any privacy. “We’ve been dictated to that we are having a double-storey that close to our house,” Samantha said. “There’s no privacy whatsoever, whether or not the building is within the rules.” Construction on the Tambo Crescent houses started about six months ago, with pre-building works starting at the end of the year, according to Samantha. She says in the first half of this year, she contacted Melton council multiple times to get more information about the development, but to no avail. “I did ring council back then [in December, 2017] and they said it’s been sold and developed,” Samantha said. “No letters to us … and finally there are notices on the fences, but

they’re just telling you who’s building and who the site manager is.” Samantha recently met Melton council officers and councillors to discuss her concerns with what she says has been a lack of consultation. But council acting planning services manager Steve Finlay told Star Weekly an application to subdivide the land into 28 lots was submitted to council in January, 2014,
and approved later that year. “At the time that the subdivision application was submitted, surrounding residents were notified of the proposal to amend an approved development plan to facilitate the subdivision of the land,” Mr Finlay said. “Residents were provided with a copy of the proposed subdivision. There were no objections to the proposed subdivision arising from the public notification of the proposal.”

Council knocks back proposal Plans to build four double-storey houses at a Melton West address have been described as an “overdevelopment” of the site. Luka Mrkonjic Town Planning Service’s application to Melton council to demolish the house at 15 Empress Way and build four houses has been knocked back by councillors. The 829 square metre corner block is in a cul-de-sac and neighbours properties with similar “generous” lot sizes. Although council officers recommended approving a planning permit, Melton councillors voted against it, with Coburn ward councillor Sophie Ramsey leading the charge. Cr Ramsey moved a motion to refuse a permit, citing a number of concerns, including density, not being in line with the neighbourhood character and “overdevelopment” of the site. The application proposed four double-storey, three-bedroom townhouses with two car parking spaces each. The houses would have a “contemporary” design with a range of external wall materials, including brick, cladding, render and a zincalume roof. The council also addressed concerns of overdevelopment in their report, saying the houses would be “well setback” from all boundaries and each house would have a minimum 40 square metres of open space. It was my pleasure last week to officially launch the City of Melton’s Build Melton Hospital: Invest in the West campaign; the most significant advocacy project ever undertaken by our community. As one of Australia’s fastest growing municipalities, the City of Melton has experienced sustained residential growth for nearly two decades. Our current population is around 154,000 and in 30 years, it will double to more than 400,000—the size of Canberra! Yet, our nearest major hospitals are Footscray—30 kilometres away—and Sunshine, where according to government data, patients can wait over eight hours to be seen by a doctor. Build Melton Hospital has been developed so our need for vital health services is communicated to all candidates running in the November State election.
As Mayor, I have witnessed firsthand, the frustration of fellow residents unable to access hospital services, and it’s time this changed. So, I encourage residents to get behind this campaign. The Notice asks Council Officers to investigate the potential to introduce a dedicated turning lane on Gourlay Road that would enable cars travelling north to turn right, directly into the shopping centre. I’ve received strong support from residents around my Notice, and will provide updates as information about options, and their likely cost, become available. Green gong for Melton The Friends of the Melton Botanic Garden’s latest project started with an idea to create a place for native birds to breed, feed and live. Earlier this month, the project brought home a top sustainability gong. It won a Keep Victoria Beautiful award, in the protection of the environment category. Members of the Melton friends group worked with the Melton Environment Group, through a Melbourne Water environment grant and donations from the Rotary Club of Melton, to create the sanctuary on a small ‘island’ in the Melton Botanic Garden lake. “We were doing brush-cutting, weeding and planting all at the same time and the island is now in excellent condition,” Friends president John Bentley said.
The volunteers – known as the ‘islanders’ – planted indigenous plants local to the area in June last year, which have survived and thrived over the summer, Mr Bentley said. The islanders visit the lake on the second Tuesday of every second month for maintenance. Three other Melton community projects won awards, including the Church of Latter Day Saints and Melton Environment Group’s work at Arnolds Creek and the African Communities Working Group. Melton is my home since 2015, so it’s been nearly three years. Before that I was in Western Australia for seven years … and I stayed in Tarneit when I first moved to Melbourne in 2011.
What are some of the issues the group has identified and how are you trying to tackle it?
My favourite thing about living in Melton is it’s diverse. There’s African communities and other nationalities. Melton is my home because I’ve never had bad experiences here … I’m feeling at home and settled.
Being called the ‘other’, being called names like African gang or Sudanese gang. One of the [milk bars] a few years ago put a sign saying ‘no blacks’ and that was really terrible. We don’t have to be so judging and including everyone in one basket — there are good people and bad people everywhere. We have to share the responsibility and once we share that responsibility we share humanity.
What would you change about the area if you could?
Can you tell me a little about life in South Sudan?
The interaction between neighbours. So we would come together, have some parties, have dinners maybe. Just checking in on how you’re going and to be supportive for one another. We need a sense of community … I haven’t seen it [yet].
When I was in South Sudan, life was hard. All my opportunities were very narrow due to the civil war. The war broke out when I was seven years old and I had to spend seven years in the bush. I was living in a traumatic environment and I was hoping that when I came to a place like Australia it would be paradise. What’s happening now is making me think, ‘Have I made the wrong decision?’

What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton?
Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Melton? I’d say Woodgrove Shopping Centre and most of the parks that we normally go to with the kids. What I like about Woodgrove is it’s a big shopping centre with a lot of variety of stores and … the people there are friendly. You’re part of the South Sudanese Community Group – what kind of projects
have you been involved in over the years? We were involved in the developing of the ‘homework club’ … but there weren’t enough volunteers and that has slowed down. But it was very positive. And other things we are doing is meeting next month to talk about some of the
ideas how we can make positive changes or positive dealings with the Melton area. And we are going to brainstorm how to link up with governments. Some ideas are mostly around advocacy, and for us to be given the same rights … A few months ago there was a South Sudanese

A crush on Croatia Stephen Linnell explores the Dalmatian Coast.
We have been wowed before. Rome’s Colosseum, France’s spectacular Palace of Versailles, the canals and narrow streets of Venice. So how would a seven day luxury cruise through Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast stack up? The stunning islands dotted with mystery and filled with history instantly seduced us. Centuries-old fortresses and battlements provided a dramatic backdrop to each island.
Our adventure started in Split, where the Palace of Roman Emperor Diocletian (built around the fourth century AD) looms large and consumes almost half the city. A wondrous start to our journey. From there, we boarded our Sail Croatia Elegance cruise ship, the Diamond. Initial concern that we had booked a 20-something party boat thankfully proved baseless. The vessel itself had a capacity for just 40
guests, with 19 cabins – just 24 people were on our cruise, mostly Australian. Our cabin was above deck, with plenty of room to move and a large ensuite. Our first overnight stop was the waterside village of Milna on the island of Brac, famous for providing the limestone used to build the White House in Washington. Second stop was the port city of Hvar, where we first explored the largest piazza in the
Adriatic before making the steep climb to the hilltop fortress, which offers extraordinary views of the old town and port, filled with multi-million dollar private yachts. The general routine throughout the week was cruise in the morning, before mooring in a cove for a morning swim. The waters around Croatia are crystal clear – and salty, but offered some great views for snorkelling.

Melton store delivers top service and great value with a community vibe Melton Foodworks is a true community store, owned by former Bacchus Marsh resident Andrew Ong and managed by local Linda Vansantvoort. Linda says that because the store’s pricing structure is independently supervised, Melton Foodworks consistently deliver great specials to its customers. “We deal directly with suppliers for our fresh food section, which means we can get great specials from them and pass them on to customers,” Linda explains. “Even with our grocery lines, we have a fair bit of control and can do specials all the time.” In line with the store’s commitment to oldschool service, the deli offers ready-to-go roast dinners. They come in different portion sizes, whether for one person or a whole family, and each has all the trimmings. The lamb, beef, pork and chicken meals come with all their
vegies and gravy in trays, so they make for great quick meal ideas. Trays of scalloped potatoes are another good idea for busy mums and dads. Grab one from the deli and pair it with a quick steak and the whole family will be happy. “I reckon we keep the entire Melton police force happy with our takeaway roast meals,” says Linda, tongue in cheek. The store’s team is made up of locals and, as Linda says, they know practically everyone by first name. “We’re a really friendly place to shop,” she says. “We love a chat and helping our customers find products in store. We would then have a three course lunch aboard ship (every day it was superb) before docking at an island – allowing us to explore by foot, bicycle or vehicle. Day three we arrived at Vis, the outer most island. It has a remarkable military history dating back to the Venetians. We took a four-hour must-do military history tour of the island, which included astonishing stories of bravery from Allied pilots who used the island for emergency landings during World War II. The island fell into then-Yugoslavia’s hands after the war, and was essentially a closed military base until the late 1980s, when it was finally opened up to the public. We went underground and explored an amazing tunnel network used to supply the major gun installations that covered the four points of the island, before entering a now disused submarine base carved into a mountain – created by former President Tito and used during the Cold War. The tour continued with a must-stop visit to the famous Blue Cave, (or Blue Grotto) on the island of Bisevo, before taking us to the port of Vela Luka, then Korcula, a grand medieval town and the so-called birthplace of Marco Polo (he at least lived there for a period of time). This port was certainly one of the best. After a day exploring Mljet, famous for its National Park and two salt lakes, we finally arrived at our final destination, Croatia’s piece de resistance, Dubrovnik. A walk around the giant walled fortress is a must, as well as shopping in the old town.

YPA Melton is proud to be the major sponsor of the Melton Swimming Club, a registered swimming club affiliated with Swimming Victoria beginning way back in 1978, training numerous abled/disabled Australian Age Champions and also age group international level swimmers. The Club is home to past and present state finalists, current medallists and state champions. One of those champions is Alisha Annie Walters, aged 11. Alisha started competitive swimming at the age of 7 and won her first race, the 50m Butterfly, at a 7-10 junior meet and hasn’t looked back since. In December 2017, Alisha competed in the Pacific School Games in Adelaide representing Victoria, winning 3 Gold medals; an Australian and Pacific School Games Record in the Girls 100m Butterfly, and an additional Bronze medal. Alisha then competed in the Victorian State Championships as a 10 year old in the 11 and under age group where she achieved two State Gold medals in the Girls 11 year old and under 200m Individual Medley and 100m Butterfly. Recently (July 25th to July 31st 2018) Alisha was again selected to represent Schools Victoria in Tasmania, winning Gold in the Girls 11 years 100m Butterfly in a 13 year old national long course qualifying time, also obtaining a Silver and Bronze medal along the way. Currently Alisha trains 7 times a week and loves every minute spent with her swimming friends. Most mornings start at 5am for her. Alisha one day dreams of representing Australia but at this point in time plans to do her best and represent her club with pride and humility.

Resi Ventures chief executive Khurram Saeed says prices for broadacre land have slipped from their peak of late-2017, meaning many new entrants are likely to have difficulty receiving project funding as land parcels they purchased a couple of years ago come up for settlement. “In today’s market, the key is to have access to finance,� Mr Saeed says. “Speculators who call themselves developers can offer you a sky-high price, but you need to be wary of these offers as there are often major pitfalls and carry huge settlement risk. “We are seeing plenty of off-market transactions where the speculators have put down deposits two to three years ago, and with settlement around the corner, they are panicking. “They have made their money previously by on-selling development sites before settlement. However, now – as the music stops and they can’t find anyone to on-sell to, they are turning to developers like us to undertake land development agreements and joint ventures. “There is a way to preserve value – undertake a land development agreement with a well-capitalised developer.� Resi Ventures has secured funding for all its major projects through the private equity funds that are taking a large chunk of the market away from the big banks, he says. “The best way for landowners in future Precinct Structure Planning (PSP) areas, such as Warrensbrook, to extract maximum value from their land is to undertake a land development agreement (LDA) or joint venture (JV) arrangement that would see the value of the land preserved in the long term.�

Devils find form in time for finals By Tara Murray Darley coach Heath Scotland got the response he was after from his playing group on Saturday in the Ballarat Football League. After a disappointing loss to North Ballarat City in the previous round, Scotland wanted to see some of their best form in the final round against ladder leaders East Point. He got exactly that, as the Devils upset the Kangaroos, winning 11.16 (82)-8.14 (62). Scotland said they showed some of the form that they would need in finals if they were to progress past the first week. “It was nice to respond that way,� he said. “They had a few players out, but you never want to lose heading into finals. “I was pleased with how we approached the game and we were able to execute the game plan and got the result. “We wanted to prove ourselves to the competition.� The Devils led at every break and steadied in the last quarter, after the Kangaroos came at them in the third quarter. The Kangaroos kicked four goals to one in the third to reduce the margin to three points heading into the final change. The Devils did it, with only 20 fit men, with Scotland and Jake Edwards both on the sidelines late in the game. “We knew that they would come at us at some stage,� Scotland said. “We responded again and will feel confident heading into next week.� Daniel Robson kicked three goals for the Devils.
Scotland said Tom Evans, Jackson Carrick, Steven Kennedy and Shane Page were the best in the win. He said the key, though, was having an even spread. “The difference was having multiple winners across the ground. Last week we only had a couple in that position.� Scotland said himself and Edwards had niggles and would be assessed later in the week. He said if they didn’t come up, they were confident of having players to step up and fill those roles having had 41 players play senior football this year. In a plus for the Devils, ruckman Dylan Reid got through a game in the reserves and will likely return to the senior side. The Devils finished the regular season in fourth and now face arch rival Bacchus Marsh in an elimination final on Sunday. The Cobras, which had been looking at a top two spot, lost to Melton in the final round, 10.11 (71)-9.10 (64). And it’s no surprise the league scheduled the final at Darley Park which will hopefully attract a big crowd. Scotland said it doesn’t get much better than playing Bacchus Marsh in a final. “We’ve had the edge over them of late,� he said. “There is no second chance. We expect them to respond to those losses [this year] and last year’s grand final loss.� Melton’s win against Bacchus Marsh left them finishing in third spot and they will face Lake Wendouree in an elimination final on Saturday at Darley Park. Melton South finished its season with a 22.13 (145)-8.10 (58) loss to Sebastopol.

SPORT Dominant Springers ready for finals Caroline Springs couldn’t ask for a better way to enter Hockey Victoria’s men’s Metro A north west finals. Playing finals for the first time, the Springers warmed up with an emphatic 16-0 win against Essendon on Saturday. Springers coach David Gorton said while they were battling a few injuries, it didn’t show in the performance. “We absolutely dominated,” he said. “We have demonstrated that when we are on our game, we can put any team to the sword. “We just have to make that we can do it against the established teams.” Ben Toogood was the star for the Springers, scoring four goals in the win and he leads the competition’s goalscoring. Gorton said this season, only the second year the club has been around, had exceeded all expectations. As well as having the best scorer, the Springers have the second tightest defence.
Both Springers men’s sides will play finals, a long way from last season when their one men’s side struggled. Gorton said not only were they hoping to go as far as they could in finals, but they wanted to make a good impression to hopefully step up grades. “We are looking at having both A and B going as far as we can,” he said. “It’s a considerable achievement for both sides to make finals. We want to be a credible unit and want to join the women in state league. “Whether its finals or a grand final we want to show we belong in the big league. “We will have a full squad for both sides for finals. We have no issue interchanging players, it’s been a strength of ours all season with our depth.” The metro B west side had a 3-2 loss to Altona in the final round. They finished the regular season in third and will play Altona again in a knockout semi-final.
The Springers women’s teams will also feature in finals action. The Vic League 2 side had a bye in the final round, so will enter the finals fresh. They finished the regular season in second and will play MHSOB for a spot in the grand final, having secured the double chance. The Springers second women’s side has claimed the minor premiership for a second straight year, this time in metro B west. They will play RMIT for a spot in the grand final. Tara Murray

Red-hot Rams on fire By Tara Murray A season of firsts has continued for Rockbank, as its A-grade side moved through to the Riddell District Netball League semi-finals. For the Rams, making finals was an achievement on its own, the club having never been in that position before. After finishing sixth, anything else was seen as a bonus. On Sunday though, they showed that they were a team not to be taken lightly, knocking off Wallan in a thriller. Wallan entered the match as one of the favourites heading into the finals, but struggled against the Rams pressure. The Rams led at every break, winning 48-46. Rams co-captain Rianne Vining was in a state of disbelief after they had pulled off the upset win. “We’re very excited,” she said. “We wanted to make finals and we thought we could have finished higher as we lost some games we thought we should have won. “To just get there was amazing.” Both sides entered the match not at full strength with the Rams missing Danni Jane Umaki, who is on holidays, and the Magpies missing Zoe Cransberg and Georgia Bowkett, who were both playing Victorian Netball League finals. Vining said they had been able to control the game early on, before the Magpies hit back at them. Despite all the late pressure, the Rams never gave up the lead. “We were up by about seven goals,” she said. “And they kept plugging it back. They would come back to about one or two goals and then we would get it back to four up.” Vining said Karli Love was amazing in the goal keeper position, while Rebecca Hicks dominated at the other end. Hicks shot 41 goals from 49 attempts to be the best shooter on the court. Having claimed one finals scalp, the Rams are after a second one this week. They face Rupertswood in a knockout semi-final. Vining said they believed they could give it a red hot crack. “We think we can bring it to them,” she said. “We think that Wallan are a better team and Wallan beat Rupertswood.” It wasn’t all good news for the Rams, with their C-grade and under-19 teams both knocked out of finals. Sharks don’t have enough in the tank for final push A last-quarter comeback by Hillside fell just short, bringing to an end the Sharks season in Essendon District Football League division 1. A poor third quarter against Craigieburn put the Sharks behind, but with the wind in their favour in the last quarter all hope was not lost. The Sharks reduced the 34-point margin back to two points, but couldn’t find that much-needed goal to put them in front. Craigieburn held on to win 13.12 (90)-12.16 (88). Sharks football manager Darren Mantynen said the third quarter proved costly. The Eagles, who were kicking with about a three-goal breeze, kicked six goals to the Sharks’ one. “We attacked too hard and didn’t defend well enough,” Mantynen said. “We didn’t do enough to shut them down well enough. We didn’t stick to the game plan so we were playing catch-up.” Mantynen said despite being 34 points down
at the last break, they hadn’t given up hope and knew if they stuck to their structures would be back in the game. They were right, but weren’t able to maintain the momentum the last couple of minutes. “We made a few poor decisions,” Mantynen said. “We couldn’t find a target inside 50.” He said Rusiate Komaitai, Thomas Drake and David Fruscalzo were the side’s best. Victor Micallef and Jeremy Hayes both stepped up in the last quarter to help them get back into the game. The loss means the Sharks have lost all three of their division 1 finals the past two years. Mantynen said he would rate this season five out of 10. “It’s been good to make finals with the amount of injuries we’ve had,” he said. “People wrote us off mid year. We knew our best football was good enough to match it with the top sides, but we weren’t able to do that consistently enough. “We would drift off at times.” Mantynen said they were already looking at

Burras bring their best By Tara Murray Diggers Rest continues to build at the right time of the season in the Riddell District Football League. Having played their best four quarter performance in the final round, the Burras upped the level again in their elimination final with Romsey on Sunday. The Burras made the most of kicking with the wind in the first quarter, kicking nine goals to one to lead by 51 points at the first break. That was the start of things to come for the Burras, who won every quarter in the 19.10 (124)-6.7 (43) victory. The match was different to recent clashes between the sides, with the margin in those games less than three goals. Burras playing coach Jamie Lobb said it was by far their best four quarter performance of the season. “We have put a lot of focus into a bit more education and how we want to play and they have taken it on board,” he said. “It was then good to see we put the foot down once we were on top. “We didn’t let them back into the game.” While Lobb was thrilled with the first quarter, the second quarter was just as important. Despite the Redbacks kicking with a four goal breeze in that quarter, the Burras outscored them by one point. Lobb said it was a good solid performance across the board. Cameron McCabe kicked five goals, while Josh Wallace and Mathew Medcraft kicked four goals apiece. Lobb said Medcraft played his best game for the club, thriving being back on his old home ground at Clarke Oval. He praised the role of Corey Wright on Jack O’Sullivan and Taylor Hine. “We were pretty even across the board,” Lobb said. “We don’t want to have any weak links.” James Carroll was the only multiple goalkicker for the Redbacks with two goals. The win moves the Burras into a semi-final clash with Riddell at Clarke Oval on Saturday, with a grand final spot on the line. It also gives the Burras a second chance. The two sides played just once this season, back in round three. The Burras won that day by 18 points, but the Bombers haven’t lost since then. Lobb said they will have to step up another level if they are to beat the Bombers, who defeated Rupertswood in their qualifying final. “That’s the beauty for us, our finals are now set up,” he said. “They [Riddell] were pretty impressive as well. Melton South begins path to a new future Melton South will further explore its options for the future. The Ballarat Football Netball League club held a special general meeting on Monday night, where it discussed affiliation and club structure. Panthers president Brendan Morrissey said the meeting was a good opportunity to talk to members about the challenges the club could face in the future. He said a motion had been moved for the committee to look at all affiliations. “We can’t bury our head in the sand,” he said. “We need to take stock.” “The motion is to look at the best option for sustainability and the viability of the club, long term.” Morrissey said with the rapid growth in the Melton council area, they had to have a look what was happening around them in other leagues. He said they would look at everything from seniors through to juniors and what’s the best league for the club moving forward. The club currently has four junior sides and is finding it difficult to recruit players, with so many other teams around. Morrissey said they would look at where the club would be in one year, five years and 10 years’ time. He said there was no guarantee they would remain in the BFL long-term. “We have to look at what is around,” he said. “We want to be in conversations with leagues around us in the growth corridor. We could have five or six new clubs between us and Deer Park. “Is there a better model playing in other areas than Ballarat? We don’t know the answers. “Our members just need to be mindful what is happening towards Melbourne. We don’t want to forget what is happening in our backyard, while we’re only looking in our front yard.” Morrissey said the netball side of things was important in any move forward. Honda Odyssey has been on sale in Australia since 1995 when the people mover was the vehicle of choice for those needing to transport more than five. For most of that period it’s been a three-way tussle between Odyssey, Toyota Tarago and Kia Carnival, although the SUV phenomenon has taken many sales away from the segment. Honda made a bit of a gamble in its third and fourth generation model by lowering Odyssey’s height to make it look and perform more like a station wagon, but with the arrival of the gen-five model in 2014 it reverted to its previous height of just under 1.7 metres. The MY2018 Odyssey gave it an external facelift, an upgraded interior and improved driver assist technology.

Two variants are offered, VTi and VTi-L, with the L standing for luxury rather than a long wheelbase as used elsewhere. VTi now has the aero front fascia design that was previously only available with higher spec VTi-L. It also has bright chrome surrounds for the new front foglights. Two new paint colours have also been introduced for the MY18 Odyssey – Cobalt Blue Pearlescent and Platinum White Pearlescent.
Interior
Odyssey VTi comes with eight seats while the more luxurious VTi-L has seven. The latter features twin buckets in place of the second-row bench in the VTi. The dashboard-mounted gearshift together with a pull-out storage tray and drink holders opens up the space between the front seats sufficiently to allow access to rear rows of seats.

Engine / transmission
There is only one powertrain – a 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol unit with peak power of 129 kW and top torque of 225 Nm at 4000 rpm. It drives through the front wheels using the greater efficiency of continuously variable transmission (CVT). Fuel consumption is listed at 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres; at 8.2 litres per
100 kilometres, we came reasonably close to during our test. These are impressive figures for a big seven-seater.
Safety
Active safety features (crash prevention) in the Odyssey VTi include ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution; emergency stop signal; stability and traction control; hill start assist; daytime running lights; and tyre deflation warning.
With its large glass areas all round Odyssey has a lovely airy feel inside and provides outstanding exterior visibility. Around town it behaves in a surprisingly sprightly manner; it cruises effortlessly on the motorway. The suspension generally copes well, but rough roads can cause it hassles at times. Handling really isn’t the reason for choosing a people mover, but Odyssey is safe and sure at higher than normal cornering speeds.
Summing up
In this era of crossover vehicles that attempt to be jacks of all trades, it’s nice to review a vehicle that has one clearly defined purpose – to provide spacious, comfortable and economical transport for more than five occupants. Although not necessarily the market leader in sales Honda Odyssey has long been the queen of its class; the MY18 update sees it remain so.
