Rockbank is croc-a-block to help Ms Lowing build an enclosure in her backyard. She said her goal was to dispel crocodile myths. “It’s said that they only eat rotten meat – that’s not true,” Ms Lowings said. “They are very sensitive animals, they’re very intelligent and they have emotions. “They are very much misunderstood because they are portrayed as instinctive killers. “Like any animal in the wild, they kill to eat … but there is also another side to them that I’ve seen. If given the right stimulation, they’re an entirely different animal.” The high-maintenance pets live on a diet of whole fish, chicken, rats and mice, she said.
“Mine are a bit spoilt because they don’t like feathers and fur, so Jilly will sometimes get chicken wings, which I supplement with vitamins and minerals,” she said. Despite her love for the creatures, Ms Lowing warns others to be cautious. “A lot more people are keeping crocodiles as pets in Victoria now, which I don’t really condone,” she said. “They are a specialist animal. I have all the necessary permits and licences for them. “People think I’m crazy because I have a salty, but people own horses that can kick you and seriously hurt you. “You have to know the animal and how to handle them.”

Vicki Lowing is known as the Croc Lady. For more than 20 years, the wildlife educator has kept crocodiles as pets – she lives with five of them in her suburban Rockbank home. Three of the reptiles moved with her from New South Wales about a decade ago, but her float – the name for a group of crocs – has grown to include two babies. Her unconventional lifestyle picked up widespread attention in recent weeks when she featured in a short video documentary that went viral with more than two million views online. Ms Lowings has dedicated her life to caring
for her animals, which include 12 year-old saltwater crocodile Jilfia, or “Jilly”, who has grown to 2.6 metres and lives in a bungalow at the back of the Rockbank property. She also owns two fresh water crocs that live indoors – Johnie, a 22-year-old female and 11-year-old male Fovian – with their two babies, JJ and FJ, named after their parents. “As a kid I always wanted one and in 1979, when I was 22, I got my first one,” Ms Lowings said. “Nothing was known about crocodiles when I first got one … the crocs have taught me more than any book would.” Community members are so intrigued with her pets, they’ve helped to raise nearly $3000 through an online crowdfunding campaign

Pesky birds in full flight By Esther Lauaki A Diggers Rest woman says she is faced with cutting down five gum trees on her property in a bid to rid her family of up to a thousand corellas that are ruling the roost. Tracey Vella has lived in the area for more than 40 years and said the corellas have only become a problem over the past decade. She is one of a number of residents urging Melton council to help find a solution for the nuisance birds that gather in Hitchcock-like proportions in trees, on the road, on rooftops and window ledges daily. “The corellas started coming to Diggers about 13 years ago when we had the massive drought and there was no water or feed for them in the bush,” Ms Vella told Star Weekly last week. “Before Bloomdale estate was here, we were surrounded by farmland and even the land at the army camp site was also farmed with crops … we had plenty of food and water around for them so they called Diggers Rest home.” In 2016, Melton council established a corella management working group to monitor the birds but residents say they have seen no progress. Fellow resident, Gabby Digiglio said the birds were “destroying the town”. “I went past my block of land to find hundreds of corellas blocking the road, covering the roofs of houses … they were everywhere,” Ms Digiglio said. Ms Vella said the birds gather for about five months of the year, between November and April, and the noise along with the mess has now become “unbearable”. “On our property we have five gum trees about 43 metres tall,” Ms Vella said. “They’re in it every single day and night … at least 2000 a day and about 1000 in one tree. “For the first part of the day, they strip the tree and then they go away and come back at 9pm, at dusk, and they’re in the trees again. “We’ve got a mulcher now, but in previous years, I’ve had to call the council to ask for extra tip vouchers because there is enough debris

being stripped from the trees to fill five large trailer loads. “These trees are so under stress that one day they will just have to be removed.” She said the flock of about 5000 birds, spread across the town, has dwindled to half the number in previous years. But the issue has divided opinions on a Diggers Rest community Facebook page with

A Victoria Police social media page which will service the Moorabool shire is now live and residents are being urged to give it the “thumbs up”. The new Eyewatch Facebook page provides updates from the Moorabool policing area from Beaufort in the west to Bacchus Marsh in the east. Inspector Brendon McCrory, who oversees the region which includes more than 120 towns, is calling on residents to stay in the loop through the page. “It will be the best way for our community members to become aware of what police operations are going on,” Inspector McCrory said. “We will also release details in relation to people who are wanted in the area, and bring residents up to speed about community events police are involved in.” Victoria Police has launched about 40 Eyewatch pages, including the Moorabool and Melton service areas, across the state to engage with residents and provide more frequent access to policing news and crime prevention information. More than 12,000 people are already following the Eyewatch Melton service area Facebook page. Residents are also encouraged to report crimes through Crime Stoppers, freeing up triple-0 operators to respond to emergencies through the page, Inspector McCrory said. The sterilisation unit at Bacchus Marsh hospital is in for an upgrade valued at almost half a million dollars. Djerriwarrh Health Services will receive $468,000 in state funding for its Central Sterile Stock Department (CSSD), with new operating theatres already under construction. Melton residents are being asked for their view on guidelines for alcohol service and consumption. Melton council adopted its alcohol and liquor policy framework in December and is now seeking public feedback on issues such as patron numbers, toilets, food safety, noise and the responsible service of alcohol. The community alcohol policy aims to support hospitality ventures while minimising risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the council was committed to working with businesses and the community. “We want everyone in the community to enjoy themselves when they are out and about in our city,” Cr Turner said. “But we also want to ensure they are safe. “The guidelines will assist business owners and event organisers to understand what is expected from them when it comes to running a licensed premises or event within the City of Melton. “Not all alcohol consumption settings are the same, and may include anywhere from a bottle shop or pub to a footy club, to a 21st birthday party. “The guidelines will help lead owners and organisers to make positive decisions around alcohol service.” Community members were being encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas on how they would like the local alcohol service industry improved, he said. A man and woman have been charged following an alleged ramming in Melton South on Sunday. Police said that a vehicle on Station Road rammed the police van about 5am. Officers were not injured during the incident. A 39-year-old Melton South man was charged with a number of offences including reckless conduct endangering life, traffic-related offences and theft of motor vehicle and was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday. A 25-year-old Melton South woman was charged with theft of motor vehicle. She was bailed to appear at Werribee Magistrates Court on March 28.

Bowls club fights back The Mt Cottrell Bowls Club, faced with dwindling numbers not so long ago, is on a roll. Club secretary Troy Cooke said that just 18 months ago the club’s membership was in serious decline. “There was a couple a hundred dollars left in the kitty and we needed to come up with a plan to get people into the sport,” he said. “We made some changes to the way we recruited our members and we’re seeing results. We need members to survive.” He said the “massive turnaround” meant three of the club’s teams, one mid-week and two Saturday teams, were playing finals. Mr Cook hopes open days in March and April will spread the word about the club even further.

Funding to build strong communities
Brigade a family affair By Esther Lauaki A Melton fire brigade comprising seven families has shown its mettle at the recent state championships. The 23 competitors representing Melton Tatura placed second at the Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) State Urban Junior Championships in Warrnambool on February 24 and 25. They hailed from the Arandt, Portelli, Falzon, Geysing, Hocking, Millington and Johns families. Melton was second in both the dry and wet
events and picked up three race wins during the day. Coach Anthony Rhodes said Melton was a very family-oriented brigade and the connections prompted strong competition. “The seven families make up the 23 members of our competition team,” Mr Rhodes said. “It helps to make it competitive; all the kids love to beat their siblings but the best thing is they all work for each other so they make sure we get the best results.” He said many of the children were following a tradition set by their parents, who started in
junior competitions and went on to train to become CFA volunteers. Volunteer Fire Brigade Victoria chief Andrew Ford said junior brigades and the championships were the best way for young people to become engaged and learn practical skills before being old enough to attend fires. “The championships can set young people on a pathway to serve their communities,” Mr Ford said. “They encourage family participation and help to instil a sense of community service and volunteerism in young people while raising the importance of local fire brigades.”
Upgrades are on the horizon for two Bacchus Marsh community hubs thanks to $20,000 in federal grants. Bacchus Marsh Bowling Club and The Neighbours Place have both received a boost through the government’s Stronger Community Program. The bowling club plans to spend its $12,622 grant to refurbish club rooms so it can host tournaments and social events. Ballarat MP Catherine King, who announced the grants last week, said the funding would mean better access to services and facilities in Bacchus Marsh. “This project is looking to make the club a key part of the community, able to host both tournaments and social events across the entire breadth of the community,” Ms King said. The Neighbours Place, an emergency food bank and microfinance provider, has been granted $8000 to go towards refurbishing its microfinance office. “This community group provides essential services to those in need across the community, from emergency food and loans to simply giving people a hand with their tax returns,” Ms King said. “This upgrade will make things much easier for the staff and volunteers here, as well as those who take advantage of the services on offer.” Esther Lauaki

Moonlite ready to shine Bacchus Marsh thespians are fine-tuning their performances for the Moonlite Theatre Group debut production this weekend. The group, which launched last year, throws back to the age of rock ’n’ roll in its first major show It’ll Be OK On The Night. The comedy comprises short, 30-minute performances about a group of actors who want to recreate three 1950s radio plays. Cast member Stephen Houghton said audience participation is encouraged. He said the show is almost art imitating life with a story about a new community theatre
group that is building on a long-forgotten tradition of community theatre. “It’s very much a nod to the era and the radio plays that were written in the early 1950s. “It’s an intimate venue and audience members can expect some theatre sports, in which the audience participates to create a fun event.” There will be three performances at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church Hall at Bacchus Marsh – 7pm Friday and 2pm and 7pm on Saturday. SPORT Team effort keeps Bulls looking sharp for finals Bacchus Marsh continues on its merry way as it finetunes for the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup finals. With top spot secured heading into the final round, the carrot of an undefeated regular season provided plenty of motivation for the Bulls, who continued their fine form against Romsey, which is fighting for a top-four spot. The Bulls made 324, bowled out in the 72nd over. Bulls captain-coach Ben Robertson said the most pleasing thing was the contributions from across the board. James Lidgett top-scored with 78, while four other batsmen passed 20.
“We tried to get the game going forward and batted aggressively,” Robertson said. “We had quite a few batsmen get starts and it was an even contribution from the guys.” Romsey, facing three overs at the end of the day, hoped to get through unscathed. Enter Madushanka Ekanayaka, who took 2-1 in 1.2 overs to have Romsey in trouble at 2-4. Robertson said any batman would have trouble facing Ekanayaka, who has taken his game to another level in recent weeks. “He was unbelievable on Saturday,” he said. “No one would have wanted to face him for a couple of overs at the end of the day. “He’s been consistent early in the season without starring. I’m not sure how he’s taken
his game to another level, but he’s bowling faster than he was.” Robertson said the Bulls were keen to keep their unbeaten streak going and take momentum into the finals. He knows, though, there are no guarantees in finals. “After winning last week [against second-placed Riddell] the goal was to go through undefeated,” he said. “We’ve tried a few different things the last few weeks to work out what works best for us. It’s given us an idea what will work well.” Robertson said there would be some hard decisions come selection time, with several players from the second XI pushing their cases.
He said the strength of the squad was one of the reasons the side had produced such great results this season, with players stepping up when needed. In other matches, Diggers Rest Bulla is 3-47 chasing Rupertswood’s 156. In B grade, Eynesbury needs to take quick wickets to ensure it wins a finals berth. Lions find welcome form By Tara Murray Melton returned to form and sealed a top-two finish in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west competition. Coming off a rare loss, the Lions bounced back against bottom side Coburg in a one-dayer on Saturday. The Lions came away with the win with ease and bowled Coburg out for 114 after Coburg was 9-79. Playing coach Nathan Geisler took 3-7 and Brad Jones also took three wickets. The Lions then made the required runs in the 33rd over, finishing at 4-115. Geisler said they were focused on winning to seal the top-two spot and a home final. “It was good to get the win,” he said. “It was an important game and we wanted that top-two spot and a home final. “We got early wickets and held our catches.” Having kept Coburg to a low score, Geisler said the focus was on giving the players as much time as possible in the middle ahead of finals. Nathan Taylor top-scored with 48 not out in a return to form. “They had to bowl us out to get the win, so we said it didn’t matter in what over we got the runs,” he said. “Nathan got to spend some good time in the middle and it’s good for him heading into finals.” It was a double celebration for the Lions as David Kirk played in his 200th first XI match, having made his first XI debut for the Lions in 1999. The win sealed second spot and a return to finals for the first time since 2014-15. Geisler said it had been a bit of an indifferent second half to the season after previously being on top of the ladder at Christmas. “We lost one game and won two games and had one washed out,” he said. The Lions face Yarraville this weekend in a two-day clash in the opening round of the finals. The Lions won the only game between the two sides this season, and Geisler said the Eagles could quite easily have beaten them. Geisler said they were focusing on preparing like they would for any other game and not putting pressure on the group. “They have a few high quality batters at the higher end, which we have to get out,” he said. “We need to dismiss [Matt] Love, [Matthew] Harrison and [Joe] Billings early on. “And then if we bat first, we need to bat our overs and put a score on the board.” In Victorian Women’s Premier second XI the Lions lost to Carlton-Brunswick. The Lions made 6-163 from their 45 overs. Carlton Brunswick chased down the runs in the second last over, finishing 7-165. Darley falls at the last shot A final round win wasn’t enough for Darley to sneak into the Ballarat Cricket Association finals. Needing other results to go their way to move into the top four, it wasn’t to be for the Lions, who had to settle for fifth. The Lions entered day two in control against Brown Hill. They made 5-192 before declaring after 41 overs and had Brown Hill 6-80 at stumps. The Lions needed quick wickets on day two for the outright win they needed to move into the top four. The bottom side lost two quick wickets, before putting up some resistance. Brown Hill was eventually bowled out for 138. Ben Longhurst took four wickets, while Hayden Jamieson did a lot of the damage on day two, taking 3-24. In their second innings, the Lions were 1-60 after 14 overs before the game was called. Jamieson finished 32 not out, after being promoted up the order to opener. The Lions finished six points outside the top four behind Mt Clear and North Ballarat. Speaking before the last game, Lions coach Michael Alexander said it would be a disappointing result if they didn’t make finals this year, having finished runners-up the previous season. The perfect Storm By Lance Jenkinson A premiership win for Sydenham Hillside in the inaugural Victorian Turf Cricket Association women’s division has capped a history-making summer for the Storm. It is the first senior women’s cricket side in the club’s 20-year history, so the flag glory is the icing on the cake. Storm captain Catherine Morrow was only too happy to spread the plaudits around. “It makes it really good for a club environment to bring both genders into the club,” she said. “It’s been a collective team effort from everybody at Sydenham Hillside to get the team up. “It’s fantastic to win the first one and to reward all the hard effort that’s been put in from the executive and the committee and also the ladies.” This team is just a starting point for Sydenham Hillside and its women. The Storm is working hard to get a second senior women’s team up and running and is hoping to add a second junior girls team after success of the under-13 girls this season. When Sydenham Hillside clinched its nine-wicket win over Westmeadows in the grand final at Hillside Recreation Reserve, it picked up another flag to hang on the clubroom walls and opened up the door for future generations of females to be involved in the club. “For some of them, it’s their first year ever playing cricket, so it was fantastic to win the premiership,” Morrow said. “I just hope that some of the men’s teams can get up and win premierships and it will be a fantastic presentation night down the track.” Sydenham Hillside finished five wins clear on top of the women’s ladder after the home-and-away rounds and was clearly the dominant side in the grand final. The Storm bowled Westmeadows out for 73 in 17.5 overs, with medium pacer Maddison Lorimer snaring a game-best 3-14. “She’s just improved week in week out,” Morrow said. “She bowled the best she’d ever bowled in the grand final, which was fantastic. “I hope that gives her heaps of confidence for next year … she’s only 18 years of age, so she’s got a bright future.” Vicki Kokkinidis continued her stellar season with the ball, taking 2-9, while Hannah Brne snared 2-24. Sydenham Hillside was cruising to victory until a hamstring injury forced opener Kerry Scandolera to retire hurt on 12. It was the only negative on a dream day for the Storm, which reached the target one down with Morrow scoring 43 not out. “It was sad that Kerry couldn’t finish the innings and got injured at the wrong time,” Morrow said. “But it was good that Maryann [Marsh] was out there in the middle at the end because she’s had a good season.”

Gold wins a thrilling final Bacchus Marsh Gold kept its season alive in Central Highlands Bowls’ top division. Facing Kyneton in an elimination semi-final, Gold needed to turn around the result from the previous week when it lost to Kyneton. It was a thrilling match, with the biggest margin between the rinks five shots, as it went down to the wire. Gold claimed the win 98 (16)-96 (2). Glenn Arthur, Justin Webster and Phil Minniti led the winning rinks for Bacchus Marsh. Gold now faces Gisborne for a shot in the grand final, after Gisborne lost to Kyneton Golf in the other semi-final. Golf became the first team through to the grand final after an upset win against Gisborne. Gisborne entered the match the in-form team after a number of good wins late in the season, but it meant little on Saturday. Not much separated the teams all day, with each team winning two rinks, but it was Golf that got the victory, winning 86 (14)-80 (4). Stephen Taylor and Ricky Turner led the winning rinks for Golf, while Matthew Bacon and Sam Boslem won the rinks for Gisborne. In division 2, Gisborne Red won through to the grand final with a big win against Diggers Rest. Kyneton won by two shots against Macedon and will now face Diggers Rest in the preliminary final. In division 3, Romsey will face Trentham or Macedon in the grand final. In Bowls Victoria Pennant, Melton’s season in division 1, section 1 ended on Saturday. Already out of finals contention, Melton faced bottom side Altona (2). It was a disappointing end to the season for Melton, losing 84 (14)-79 (4). Melton finished eighth.

New-look Bears are ready to rise up the ranks Burnside Heights’ development in Essendon District Football League division 2 looks set to continue this year. Coming off the side’s best season in the club’s short history, the Bears are looking to rise up the ladder and hope to contend finals. Bears coach Aidan Stott said it had been a promising off season. “We’ve had an average of 45 players attend most sessions and about 65 in total have trained throughout,” he said. “Fitness has been the biggest focus as it wasn’t where it needed to be to compete for four quarters last year, the players are really committed and understand the bar had to be raised if we were going to take the next step.
“We’ve also been able to tweak our game-plan a little due to some of the players we’ve brought in.” Stott said part of the aim during the pre-season was to add some extra depth to the squad, as they look to have more than two wins for the year. The club has added about 20 new faces to the overall squad, with Stott saying there would be a different line-up to last year. Among the signings announced by the club on its social media are Adam Sullivan, Eyob Gebreselassie, Habib Hosni, Brandon Yankovski, Jordan Hughes and Michael Weaver. Tom Sturgess, who is moving back to
Bairnsdale, is the only key player to depart. A bonus for the Bears is they will have an under-19 team this season after not having one last year. Stott said they had about 26 under-19 players training with the senior squad and he expected some of those kids to push for senior spots. He said while last year they showed they would no longer be easy beats, they had to take that next step and start winning more games. “I personally don’t believe in honourable losses, which unfortunately we got tagged with a bit last year,” he said. “We realistically should have won five or six more games last season but just didn’t lift in the key moments.
“Four of our losses came after we were leading mid-way through the last quarter and we think some of the talent we have added this year and the level of football they have played at, will stand up in those key moments this year. “We won’t be satisfied with being competitive and expect to be playing finals like all seven other clubs. At this stage Coburg & Northern [Saints] are probably leading the pack slightly but the competition looks relatively even and we’re looking forward to getting stuck into it.” The Bears start their season on April 7 against Keilor Park. Mazda’s SUV flagship gets a lift By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring After a month of Mazdas that involved being behind the wheel of everything from a Mazda2 mini to a big BT-50 pick-up truck, it seemed appropriate to finish with a stint in a CX-9 Azami. Since its Australian debut in 2016, the company’s SUV pinnacle has carried off a number of awards for its class-leading features. Now the bar has been raised higher. The flagship SUV has been given dynamic, safety and comfort upgrades, including G-Vectoring Control to further improve handling. It’s as you were, as far as styling of the CX-9 is concerned, the only change being the addition of Soul Red Crystal Metallic, a newly developed body colour that has proven a big hit. Seating comfort has been further improved. The front pair of seats now have control over a wider range of positioning. Automatic folding mirrors have been added across the range. The CX-9 was the first Mazda to adopt a full-colour head-up active driving display projected on to the windscreen, giving key driving and navigation information just below the driver’s line of sight. Mazda CX-9 now has the latest version of the MZD Connect system, which links smartphones to the internet and social media. In addition, the centre display on the dash has been enlarged to eight inches on higher trim levels. The vehicle is powered by the Skyactiv-G 2.5T, the newly-developed top-of-the-range petrol engine. Traffic sign recognition has been added to CX-9 GT and Azami models. All models now get a second top tether point for third-row seats,
