Police investigations into Don Nardella have been dropped due to a lack of evidence to criminally charge the former Labor MP after he claimed more than $100,000 to live in Ocean Grove instead of his seat of Melton. Mr Nardella and fellow Labor politician Telmo Languiller both claimed a taxpayer-funded second residence allowance for living outside of their electorates while residing on the Bellarine Peninsula. Mr Languiller resigned as speaker and Mr Nardella as deputy speaker of Victoria’s Parliament last February after The Age revealed they had claimed tens of thousands of dollars to live in the coastal towns. Mr Languiller claimed about $38,000 to live in Queenscliff instead of his Tarneit electorate. The second residence allowance is intended for country MPs who maintain an address in Melbourne. Police have written to the opposition to say no charges will be laid, due to a lack of evidence. “The investigation has determined that there is insufficient evidence to support any criminal charges and that there are no reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution if either member were to be charged,” Assistant Commissioner Stephen Fontana wrote. A police spokeswoman said the matter was considered closed and they would not be making any further comment. The expenses scandal has been politically costly for both men. Mr Nardella was expelled from the ALP after he initially refused to repay the money and now sits on the cross benches as an independent. Mr Languiller remains a Labor MP but has moved to the backbench. Both MPs will retire at the November election. The expenses saga prompted the Andrews government to crack down on MPs’ entitlements, including introducing legislation to scrap the existing entitlement system. An Andrews government spokesman said: “The government notes the conclusion of this investigation, as we continue to overhaul Victoria’s out of date and inadequate MP entitlement system.” Mr Languiller said he welcomed the police decision. “I look forward to continuing as the member for Tarneit in the Parliament and delivering for the people of the western suburbs,” he said. Mr Nardella did not respond at the time of deadline.
Telia Coverdale has taken four years to grow and maintain her dreadlocks – now she’s getting ready to shave the lot off for the Leukemia Foundation. The 18-year-old Arnolds Creek resident will shed her mane in a bid to raise at least $2000 for blood cancer research. She will get the clipper treatment from her hairdresser sister on March 17. The World’s Greatest Shave is the foundation’s major annual fundraiser with many participants around the west getting the chop for charity. Telia hopes the money she raises will help give families facing blood cancer the emotional and practical support they need, as well as help drive vital research. “Shaving my hair is something I always considered doing, however I never thought I would grow the courage to actually go ahead with the idea,” she said. “After four years of my beloved dreads I thought that maybe it’s time to let go – and what better way to do it then raise money for a worthy cause? “I’ve seen many families close to my own have horrible experiences with cancer and leukemia, so I thought if I can make a difference, small or big, it is worth it. “I think if we all adopted this mindset to issues in society we could support one another. “That’s why I have chosen to do so – so that maybe others can grow the courage to do things that support organisations like the Leukemia Foundation. “The response people have shown already is overwhelming.” Telia’s friends and family will have opportunities to cut off one of her dreadlocks in return for a donation. Lake lacks love: residents By Tate Papworth A group of fed-up Caroline Springs residents has formed a committee in an effort to have the suburb’s centrepiece lake returned to its former glory. The committee, which is being led by former Brimbank and Keilor mayor Charlie Apap, says Lake Caroline has significantly deteriorated in recent years. “When Delfin had control of this lake, it was perfect – we rarely had a problem,” Mr Apap said. “Since the Melton City Council have taken over, it’s gotten worse and worse. “Weeds are overgrown and sprouting right across the lake, the fountain hasn’t been turned on for at least eight months and the stagnant water produces an odour in warmer months. “I’ve had many years experience working on councils. “We don’t want to work against the council – we want to work with them to get something done,” he said. Melton operations acting manager Rishi Viner disputed the group’s claims. “Melton City Council officers have inspected Lake Caroline, and after testing the water quality, determined the water was clear and in a very healthy condition,” he said. “The council conducts regular scheduled cleans of Lake Caroline – one to two times a week. “Additional boat-based aquatic plant and litter collections have been scheduled over the coming weeks.” Mr Viner said the council was hoping to have the fountain fully operational in the near future. “While attempting to fix the fountain at Lake Caroline, officers discovered the pump and motor will need to be replaced,” he said.

“These replacement parts are being organised.” The residents’ committee has also expressed concerns that water is being drained from the lake to water nearby sporting fields. They say lower water levels make the significant weed coverage even more visible. Mr Viner said the council did use water from the lake. But he said the drop in levels was largely created by evaporation, which can
be as much as 20 millimetres on hot, windy days. “The council does capture excess storm water in Lake Caroline for the purposes of watering the sporting grounds at Caroline Springs Recreation Reserve,” he said. “But compared to the volume of water in Lake Caroline, this use is very limited. “Low water levels at the lake are a result of a lack of rainfall and evaporation.”
Shocking CCTV footage appears to show three teenage girls lighting a grass fire in Melton West earlier this month. Investigators are hunting for the trio who lit the fire under the Roslyn Park Drive overpass about 8.50pm on January 3. The footage shows the girls leaning over a concrete barrier into the long grass. They begin to run, but pause briefly and then flee the scene once the grass erupts into flames. No one was injured and no property damaged as a result of the fire, and the maximum temperature was only 22 degrees on that day in Melton, however the fire spread rapidly along the creek before being extinguished by fire crews. The trio was last seen running away from the fire along the bike path near the creek. Armed robbery arrests

A 17-year-old male from Kurunjang was among three teenagers arrested last week in connection with three armed robberies. The trio was charged in relation to armed robberies at a service station on Little Boundary Road in Laverton North on January 8 and two Thomastown service stations on January 10 at Keon Parade and Dalton Road. The Kurunjang man was charged with armed robbery, theft of motor vehicle and theft. A 16-year-old from Reservoir and a 16-year-old from Tarneit were also charged. All three faced an out of sessions hearing.

Kurunjang man charged

Diggers Rest barrier bid rejected By Esther Lauaki VicRoads has ruled out installing safety barriers along a stretch of Vineyard Road. The decision is in response to resident fears an accident could happen at the new Diggers Rest Early Learning Centre and Diggers Rest Medical Centre, which backs on to Vineyard Road. Diggers Rest resident David O’Connor, who is leading the campaign, said he was “perplexed” about why the issue was not raised before or during construction of the centres.
“Many residents feel uncomfortable with the possibility that a vehicle could easily leave the road and potentially collide with buildings,” Mr O’Connor said. “The chance of something happening there might be slim, but it still needs to be considered.” Vineyard Road is a state arterial road controlled by VicRoads. A VicRoads spokesperson said requests for safety barriers were considered based on the number and type of vehicles, type of roadside hazards, the safety record of the site and costs.
“VicRoads has carried out a detailed investigation of the site, including a site inspection and a review of the crash history in the last five years, ending 30 June, 2017,” he said. “VicRoads’ assessment found that there are no significant roadside hazards present at this location, vehicles posed no obvious threat of ‘running’ off the road, and the delineation of the road is considered appropriate. In the context of the above, VicRoads does not consider installing safety barriers at this location at this time.”
Mr O’Connor said VicRoads had told him Vineyard Road would continue to be monitored, with the safety and operation of the site to determine the need for any improvements. “We’ll continue a campaign for the barriers despite VicRoads’ response,” Mr O’Connor said. “The safety issue is detrimental to the longevity of the new early learning childhood centre.” Melton council wrote to VicRoads in November requesting that it look at the possibility of installing safety barriers.
Tee up for a good start Budding musicians in the west will get tips on how to get the “X-Factor” from a professional. Singer “Tee” Ofisa Toleafoa, who was a finalist on the 2014 season of the X-Factor X-Factor, will harness his talents to mentor young performers at Ravenhall’s JDC Studios this year. Toleafoa tailored the music performance program to meet the musical interests and skills of those wanting to pursue a career in the arts. “I’ve taught in the past and I’ve trained in this field. For me, I believe it’s about not what you do on earth, but what you leave behind. Teaching a legacy that I really love,” Toleafoa said. “Being a Pacific Islander I know that in the west there are a lot of talented Pacific young people out there and to be able to give back to our own people is something that means a lot to me. “I see a lot of myself in these kids and the
ability to be able to share my experiences with them is great.” Lessons focus on how to get ready for a musical performance, auditions, preparing songs and stage presence as well as honing practical skills such as breathing and microphone technique. Your chance to bridge that gap By Esther Lauaki Five unnamed bridges around Moorabool will soon be officially named to pay tribute to the history, places and pioneers of the area. Moorabool residents can cast their vote to name the bridges in a VicTrack competition which runs until the end of this month. Names will be selected for a total of 40 high-risk bridges across Victoria in fire or flood-prone areas so that emergency services can locate them quickly and accurately.
VicTrack property group general manager Peter Chau said the nominated names commemorate a local place or community member and follow criteria set out by the Office of Geographic Names (OGN). “Naming these bridges is important to our emergency services, when seconds really count,” Mr Chau said. The nominated names were shortlisted by a panel including the OGN, emergency services, Moorabool shire and VicTrack. McCormacks Bridge in Bacchus Marsh may

be renamed Marshbark Bridge, a hybrid of Bacchus Marsh and Ironbark roads, or Nick Atanastoff Bridge after a pioneering orchardist who moved to Bacchus Marsh after World War II and planted more than 40,000 trees. Nominated names for a bridge at Browns
Lane in Parwan include the Fred Lewin Bridge in honour of a well-known community volunteer at St Vinnies, little athletics and the local netball club. Pearce Bridge was also shortlisted as a nod to the Pearce family who grew chicory in Bacchus Marsh from 1867 and were owners of the general store. Phibs has dibs on art Melton’s birdlife and bushscapes are the inspiration behind the newest street art in the heart of the town centre. Notable graffiti artist Phibs is producing the large-scale piece as part of council’s summer of street art series which aims to reduce rates of illegal graffiti in the area. Phibs’ work has featured on iconic city streets, and international exhibitions and collections, including in the National Gallery of Australia. His signature style will be woven into the work on the wall of a High Street supermarket and will feature symbolic imagery of birdlife. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the mural would be something the whole community could be proud of. “This wall mural will be our first large-scale street artwork in Melton,” Cr Turner said. “We’ve seen the evidence that street art can be used to effectively decrease graffiti, crime, as
well as create iconic artwork that we can all be proud of. “This mural will also provide inspiration and motivation to a group of young artists who will be developing a set of murals for the McKenzie Street Laneway in February.” The finishing touches are being placed on the nine metre street art piece for the public to enjoy. By Esther Lauaki Andrew Freeman will be heading for new challenges when he leaves the top job at Djerriwarrh Health Services in a few weeks for a role with Western Health. The chief executive will step down from his current role later this month. He started in the role in August, 2015, on a temporary basis before being permanently appointed in October that year. An administrator, Dr John Ballard, was appointed to Djerriwarrh Health Services in October, 2015, following a review that revealed
a catastrophic failure of clinical governance at Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital. Dr Ballard credited Mr Freeman with a turnaround at the hospital and the wider Djerriwarrh services in Melton, Bacchus Marsh and Caroline Springs. “Andrew’s challenge at Djerriwarrh was significant and multi-faceted,” Dr Ballard said. “He has driven the required changes and reinvigorated the culture of the service, positioning it to better handle ongoing population growth and diversity to the west of Melbourne. Andrew has displayed great skill, courage, commitment and compassion.”
Djerriwarrh nursing director Amanda Edwards will be interim chief executive as the recruitment process begins next month. The Victorian government last year committed more than $10 million in capital investment to Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital for the provision of a $9 million theatre redevelopment and the $1.6 million completion of stage two of the maternity department refurbishment. The development of new facilities was aimed at ensuring the health service is better equipped to meet the care needs of the community, Dr Ballard said.

Tracking trouble spots More than 750,000 Australians are treated for a form of skin cancer every year, prompting medical professionals to call for greater awareness. Deer Park Doctors Clinic doctor Niresh Madhanpall says the practice has recently increased its skin-care services and is encouraging residents to come in for a check. “We’ve recently invested in a dermascope, which is a significant tool in helping to detect skin cancer,” Dr Madhanpall said. “The tool allows us to go over skin lesions, which then get uploaded to the clinic phone. “It picks up things like the height and depth of a lesion.” Dr Madhanpall said the new service, combined with the warmer weather, had resulted in an increase in the number of people coming in for skin checks. But he said greater awareness was needed.
“It’s summer, people take off their clothes, they notice things and don’t always do something about it,” he said. “This allows us to create a detailed mole map and keep on top of anything that could become suspicious.” Dr Madhanpall said Australians were over-represented in skin cancer, with one in three Australians diagnosed with a form of the disease by the time they are 70. “This is about improving community health and making a real difference,” he said. “It’s a new year and an opportune time to get any suspicious spots looked at.” Tate Papworth Dr Niresh Madhanpall checks a patient. MY PLACE Jeff Jones has his roots firmly planted in Bacchus Marsh. The fifth generation orchardist chats with Esther Lauaki about life on the land. What is your connection to Moorabool? I moved to Bacchus Marsh from the eastern side of Melbourne. We are the fifth generation in orchards. How long have you lived in the area? I’ve live in the area since 1959. What brought you to Bacchus Marsh? The subdivision near Burwood took over the area and we sold up and were looking for a large block of land. We found this property not long after.
Your two sons now work with you on the orchard, as well as your wife Glenda and a small team. What’s kept you in farming for so long? I’ve been doing it since I was a kid. I was educated at Box Hill Secondary School … when I left school after intermediate, I stayed home and worked on the farm. I’ve always been tied up with fruit and vegetables. I just love it. It’s my thing. When we first started out here, it was all apples. We then changed to various types of soft fruit – apricots, peaches and plums … the last thing we planted here was persimmons. I’ve semi-retired due to my eyesight, but it’s still of great interest to me. As long as I can see the

You must have seen a lot of changes in the area over nearly 60 years. Tell me about the biggest changes you’ve seen in Bacchus Marsh in your time here. When the freeway was put in, the town just moved ahead in leaps and bounds. In the latter few years it has become a suburb of Melbourne, but with that country time atmosphere.

By Esther Lauaki Samantha Bradfield is busier these days than many 19-year-olds. The Bacchus Marsh teen, who has a developmental delay which affects her speech, is training to compete at the Special Olympics Australia national games in Adelaide later this year. The games, held every four years over five days, is a challenging competition for athletes with a disability to compete across a range
of sports from athletics and basketball to gymnastics and tennis. Samantha will compete in the 100 metres, 400 metres, shot put and four x 100 metre relay events. “This is her fifth year in athletics with Special Olympics,” her mother Katrina said. “She also does swimming and basketball. “Samantha loves Special Olympics because she’s made a lot of friends and they’re very encouraging.” Samantha is part of an athletes leadership
program run by Victoria Police and she said her goal is to move into coaching. “The program has really brought Samantha out of her shell because they learn how to do public speaking and activities to boost confidence,” Katrina said. The Victorian team will join more than 1000 hopefuls from across the country to compete in Adelaide from April 16 to 20. Athletes are vying for a spot on the Australian team that will head to Abu Dhabi for the Special Olympics world summer games next year.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gets his Greek on at Eleni’s There’s a lot of family history tied up in Yarraville’s new Greek eatery. Locals who know just how long the fit-out of the former Anderson Street boutique took will be gratified to know that a fine space has been carved out here. The place is being managed by Eleftheria (“Thierry”) Amanatidis. At her side around the place is her uncle, Tony. The restaurant is named after Tony’s mother, Eleni Amanatidis. Eleni’s husband is Dimitrios Amanatidis, the father of whom was Antonios Amanatidis, one of the first Greek Orthodox priests to arrive in Australia. So, yes, a lot of family vibes and inner-west Greek traditions going on here. Unsurprisingly, and very happily from our perspective, the food being delivered is old-school, straight-up Greek tucker. We wouldn’t have it any other way. Still, we find some nice ‘n’ lovely twists and tweaks when we partake of a fine dinner as guests of Thierry and her crew. In the serve of super fresh dips ($14), for instance, the melitzanosalata eggplant number tastes not in the least of the garlic and smokiness we are expecting, but instead of zingy mint. Just as good is the tirokafteri of feta, capsicum and the tiniest tingle of chilli. These two are finely abetted by a tzatziki with dill and a very mild-flavoured tarama. The dips are served with very good house-made bread, though we resort to grilled pita to mop up the remainders.
ELENI’S KITCHEN + BAR Address: 28 Anderson Street, Yarraville Phone: 9943 4233 Bennie and I split two mains between the more ritzy grill line-up and the “Eleni’s home favourites” list that includes moussaka and pastitisio. The cabbage rolls ($24) are every bit the home-style classics for which we’ve been hoping. The meat in our lamb gyros plate ($25) is very fine indeed – salty and herby and heaps of it. This meat is also available in pita-wrapped takeaway form for $12. In some ways, though, the top test of both our mains – and a handy gauge of the freshness and general excellence of the food at Eleni’s – comes in the form of the salads. Differing slightly, they are superb – dressed well, juicy and delicious in every way, and displaying no sign at all of even a single tired or brown-edged leaf. The baklava ($8.50) – made by Thierry herself – is a tender take on another Greek classic. Even better is the rizogalo (rice pudding, $8.50). This is some kind of fancy trick – that something so homespun and plain can simultaneously be so suave, smooth and sexy. There’s no doubt in our minds that Eleni’s will be widely regarded as a very welcome arrival to the inner west. (Consider The Sauce dined at Eleni’s as guests of management.)

Once Alana and Simon Richards realised their then 30-month old daughter Emma was “a natural show-off”, they knew she was ready to spread her wings into an activity that allows freedom of expression. Alana began her search for the “right” dance school, one without many demands and encouraged free expression of Emma’s outgoing nature. “At the school Simon and I were really interested in, the teacher had a chat with Emma and then said she could start straightaway,” Alana says. “Emma was good at first but then she got a bit silly, probably masking feeling a little out of her depth. But once she made friends and her confidence improved, she settled in and has loved it ever since. “Now she’s able to balance distractions from her friends and listening to her teacher. We’ve seen her confidence grow in group settings, she now loves performing and totally embraces the fun of class time.” Emma, now three and a half and able to talk under water, says she “loves everything” about her dance school. “I like warm-ups when they play the song from Frozen. I dance with Tamaira who’s my best friend and at the concert I was a circus clown. Everyone clapped me.” Although Alana had to invest in proper ballet shoes – about $34 a pair for good ones – she finds it an inexpensive activity for Emma. “I like that Emma can wear whatever she likes to

classes. The teacher encourages self-expression and puts no limits on what the littlies can wear. Emma happens to love her Barbie tutu and leotard but plenty of kids just wear a tee and leggings. “We also like the mix of free-dancing – the kids always warm up with some funky dancing, which they all seem to love – combined with teaching of technique in a low-key, natural way. “Emma also gets to sing, with each lesson offering singing scales and a song. They have a game at the end of each lesson to gently introduce a drama component and also a “news-time” circle for the kids to get to know each other. “Each class goes for an hour and it’s cleverly broken up into sessions so kids don’t get a chance to be bored. “And to see Emma perform so happily and have fun at her first end-of-year concert was pretty special.” Carole Levy

One of the main things Bennie enjoys about Sri Lankan food is the ability to order pork. His pork curry here is similar to those he’s enjoyed elsewhere – dry, charry, enjoyable. But beware – its is very, very fatty. My lamprais ($17) is something entirely different. I’ve enjoyed other versions of this very traditional Sri Lankan meal – cooked in a banana leaf – but never quite this hearty. The stars are a couple of fat charred, juicy and supremely delicious prawns. There’s an orb of tuna cutlet and a heap of chicken and the same pork as in Bennie’s curry. The chicken is overcooked by Western, charcoal grill standards, but that is – I strongly suspect – entirely normal for this dish. My meal is so meaty, so macho that the phrase “meat lovers” comes to mind – something more usually associated with pizzas. As well, the fried egg – very good – lends the dish something of the aspect of an old-school English fry-up. Our first glances at the menu are quite bracing in terms of price, based on our long enjoyment of extremely affordable Sri Lankan food at a variety of places. But closer perusal of the food list reveals some outright cheaper gems. Three rotis, one veg curry and one meat curry for $12, for instance. Or a rice-and-curry combo of two veg curries and one meat curry for $15. Justin is delighted with his curry combo deal. The curry deals can be customised according to customer wishes – rather than being a mix of whatever the staff choose out in the kitchen. The mild beef curry is some way short of tender, but not tough, either – perfectly normal and acceptable for this kind of food. The eggplant moju disappears at pace. But it is the potato curry that is the star – so simple and tasty! It is a vegetable selection that shines brightest in Bennie’s line-up, as well. The okra dish is as good as we’ve enjoyed. The vegetable holds its vibrant greenness, is not in the least cooked down and shows not the slightest sign of sliminess. We’re all taken with the cashew curry, which is way more creamy and moist than the photograph suggests.

SPORT Darley nails T20 title after young star turns the game Darley has claimed its first Ballarat Cricket Association T20 title with a nail-biting win against Napoleons-Sebastopol. For much of Sunday’s grand final, the Lions were on the back foot and looked like they were heading for defeat. Naps-Sebas were cruising midway through their innings, needing way less than a run a ball and had wickets in hand as they chased the Lions’ 9-112. Enter Corey Beaton. The youngster turned the game with a stunning spell. Lions playing coach Michael Alexander said Beaton was clearly best on ground in the decider.
“He’s only a 17-year-old and he’s been fantastic all tournament,” Alexander said. “They were 2-70 off 10 overs with about 40 to get and were in control.” Beaton got the key wicket of danger man Brodie Symons. “Corey got the key wicket,” Alexander said. “He’s an off-spinner and he got the guy that was going and ready to hit out. Once we got the wicket, we tried to make sure we got dot balls and put the pressure back on them – and the wickets started to fall.” Beaton claimed 3-10 off his four overs, with Alexander saying Beaton’s form in the T20s had played a big role in him being picked to make his debut in the club’s first XI.
While Beaton turned the game, some of the side’s more experienced players finished it off. The Naps-Sebas players still had the game in their hands when they needed 24 off 30 balls. “They were in front all day,” Alexander said. “It wasn’t until the last over, when they needed 10 off it, [that] we were in front. “Matt Cape and the two Sri Lankans [Anurruda Rajapaksha and Roshan Anuruddha] bowled the last five overs and executed them brilliantly. Locky Herring set some good fields with some good captaincy.” Earlier in the day, the Lions won their semi-final with Wendouree one wicket down. Wendouree made 113, with Matt Cape taking 3-17 and Beaton taking two wickets, including
that of Tom Le Lievre, who top-scored for Wendouree. The Lions got the runs with an over to spare, making 1-114. Alexander is hoping the T20 win will bring some much-needed confidence to the club’s first-grade side. On Saturday, the Lions lost a close one to Mt Clear and now sit sixth, 12 points outside the top four. “Our bowling and fielding has been good, but we haven’t been able to nail the batting,” Alexander said. “The loss on Saturday hurt us and now we have to win our last three matches and hope results go our way.” Tara Murray

Poor inning costs Titans By Tara Murray North Western Titans were left to rue a poor start against Pakenham in Baseball Victoria summer league division 3 on Saturday. In their first match since Christmas, the Titans had no chance to settle back into play against the ladder leaders. The Panthers didn’t waste any time, hitting six runs in the opening innings to take control of the game, which they won 11-1. Titans coach Danny Haymes said it was a disappointing start. He was more pleased with how they responded. “We struggled to hit the ball first game back,” he said. “They scored six runs in the first innings which didn’t help us. They scored just another five for the rest of the game. “It was one of those games.” It’s a second straight game the Titans have been left to rue one poor inning. 36 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 23, 2018
In the game before Christmas, they went from leading to losing after conceding eight runs in an innings. Haymes said it was one thing they needed to get out of their games. He said it meant the side’s improvement has not being reflected in the score. The other area Haymes said they need to improve was batting. “We just need to get out there and hit,” he said. “The top sides do that and we’ve been working hard on the batting. “We’re leaving so many players on bases and not getting the hits when we need them.” Haymes said Scott Sell and pitcher Matt Martin were the two standouts for the side in the loss. Two late withdrawals meant Sell had to play on second base for the first time. It wasn’t all bad news for the Titans on Saturday, with the seconds coming from behind to defeat Pakenham.
The win keeps the Titans finals’ hopes alive. The Titans sit sixth, three wins behind fourth-placed Chelsea. Haymes said the seconds were benefiting from players in both sides returning from injury. The Titans play second-placed St Kilda this week. Haymes said despite just two wins for the season, there was a lot to be thankful for. “We have to remember we’re looking at more a long-term goal,” he said. “There’s lots of positive signs and we’re not falling behind. “We’ll certainly look to win a couple of games in the run home and finish the season on a high.” The Titans, which have a bye in two weeks time, will host a Wagga Wagga team for a three-game series on February 3 and 4. The Titans played games in Wagga during the off season.
Bacchus Marsh showed it meant business against an undermanned Woodend side in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup on Saturday. In the battle between second and third, it was the undefeated Bulls who came out on top. The Bulls bowled Woodend out for 62 in a stunning performance. Woodend was missing three key batsmen, but their presence would have made little difference given the way the Bulls bowled. Madushanka Ekanayaka claimed 7-28, as the Bulls needed just three bowlers to get the job done. The Bulls changed their batting order to give some of the lower order guys a hit. They lost two wickets on their way to claim first-innings points and will resume at 3-168. James Lidgett is 97 not out. Diggers Rest Bulla will need a good day with the bat if it is to get the job done against Gisborne. The Dragons made 9-331. Rasika Batepola and Ravin De Silva took three wickets each for the Burras. In B grade, St Anthonys had a day out with the bat in making 7-427 against Gisborne. Paul Scott and Cam Clayton both made centuries. It was Scott’s second century for the season. Melton’s finals hopes are in its own hands in Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 1. Melton, which sits seventh, is one of four teams fighting for one finals spot with six rounds remaining Just 14 points separates fourth through to seventh, with the top three teams clearly ahead. Melton secretary John Adams said the side was struggling, but hadn’t given up hope of playing finals. “It is in our own hands,” he said. “We only play one of the top three again, so if we can start winning we can make finals. “It has been a little disappointing and this year all our sides have been struggling.” Adams said one of the main issues for the top side had been consistency. He said each week a rink would have a big loss and the others couldn’t make up the difference. That was the case on Saturday against third-placed Sunbury. Melton pushed Sunbury most of the way, before losing 75 (14)-67 (4). David George and Ray Gnjidic were rink winners for Melton. “They were confident going into the match they could push them,” Adams said. “They did that, but fell short at the end. There’s been a few changes made and there will be a few more made in the next couple of weeks.” While the results aren’t falling their way, there’s lots of positives around the club. Samantha Shanahan, who joined the club this year, has been named in the Victorian side. The club’s second new green is due to be opened this week, while the club will host it’s first night match. The division 2 side will play under lights on February 2.
