Police operations are bearing fruit as Melton’s crime rates continue to fall. Data released by the Crime Statistics Agency last Thursday revealed a 10.5 per cent fall in offences, from 12,282 to 10,994, recorded in the year to September. The main drivers behind the tumbling crime rates were significant drops in property and deception offences (7545 to 6367), drug offences (644 to 456) and public order and security offences (712 to 521). Criminal property damage offences decreased from 929 to 851 (9.1 per cent), stealing from motor vehicles from 1538 to 1267 (21.3 per cent) and drug trafficking from 110 to 62 ( 77 per cent). Caroline Springs Detective Inspector David Byrt said the latest statistics showed that recent police operations in the area were effective. “With specific tasking, we’ve deployed our resources to particular hotspots, or high-risk community locations like Melton CBD and shopping centres, and also to particular persons known to be engaged in those kinds of offending,” Inspector Byrt said. However, sexual offences climbed from 197 to 260, the highest in five years. Inspector Byrt said changes in legislation had lead to an increase in reporting. “For example, school teachers have to report what they believe to be crimes against children, so we’re seeing an increase in reporting as a result,” he said. “A significant amount of that offending is historical offending. There has also been significant publicity of the Royal Commission into institutionalised sex offending and that has driven the increase in reporting.” Aggravated robbery was also up to 80 recorded incidents from 53 a year ago, while breaches of family violence orders soared to 1310 from 972 (up 25.8 per cent). “We’ve got a very specific focus in this whole division with a dedicated family violence team who are very effective at driving our response to people who are breaching family violence orders, which is contributing to our success in that area,” Inspector Byrt said. “We do see it as a success because it means that we’re on top of family violence offending. “Robberies is an area that we are continuing to focus on. We’re not satisfied with that increase at all. “We have a significant number of resources dedicated to that type of offending.” Information: bit.ly/2BicU7j

Melton libraries will be bringing the beach to book-lovers this summer with a range of activities to help beat the heat. Everything from author talks to craft sessions will be happening at libraries across the municipality including the Summer Reading Club, which offers avid young readers a chance to win prizes. Kids can dive into the Summertime Fun-Time program from January 10, where they can read stories and make their own sandcastle craft. Other highlights include Maltese cooking classes, art exhibitions, batik workshop, and preschool story time. Mayor Bob Turner said the activities had been planned so residents could find a range of events. “There’s something for kids, teens and adults, so checking out the What’s On calendar is a must,” Cr Turner said. “The library is such a fantastic asset and invaluable resource for the community, so I encourage everyone to visit their local library to get involved.” Events will be held right across Melton, including at Diggers Rest Hall, Rockbank Hall and Eynesbury. Family humbled by help

Ballarat line proves to be reliable

By Esther Lauaki Melton business owners and a network of helpers have showered good fortune on an Eynesbury family who have had a tough year. Phil and Samantha Trenerry were left out of pocket more than $10,000 after a dispute that wound up at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal earlier this year. The family was left with an unfinished deck to the backyard that would have improved accessibility for their nine-year-old son Cadel who has a disability and is wheelchair-bound. The deck was eventually built with money they had set aside for much-needed bathroom renovations. In July, Steve and Tania Montebello, owners of Monte’s Kitchen Cabinets, offered to complete the bathroom renovation for free after reading about the Trenerry’s plight in the Star Weekly. “We read the story and I got a bit upset that this was a family that has had a tough time,” Ms Montebello said. She said community groups and relatives pitched in with man hours and donations. “We just thought that we wanted to help them in any way we could,” Ms Montebello said. “We donated as much as we could in terms of our time and the products, a whole heap of donations from the community like tapware, paint, sink, rails and cabinets. “We didn’t do it for the publicity … we knew it would help a family out and we wanted to see them happy. “We’ve made lifelong friends with them as well.” Cadel was born premature and has spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus, chronic epilepsy and is intellectually disabled.

Reliability on the Ballarat train line continues to improve. According to V/Line’s latest figures, reliability increased by 1.5 per cent to 98 per cent in November. V/Line chief executive James Pinder said: “Ballarat commuters demand a reliable train service and I’m pleased that the results continue to show an improvement.” While reliability increased, punctuality dropped slightly in November with 86.3 per cent of Ballarat line trains arriving on time. “We had a higher-than-normal number of train faults delaying Ballarat line services in November,” Mr Pinder said. “We saw punctuality reach its highest level in 10 months in October and we’ll be working to see this improvement continue for Ballarat line passengers.” The transformation of the Ballarat Station Precinct also began in November. The upgrade will include a 405 space commuter carpark and is designed to deliver more frequent and reliable services for passengers. “This project will allow us to run extra services during the peak, and a train every 40 minutes in the off-peak,” Mr Pinder said. Statewide, V/Line delivered one of its highest on-time performances in the past 12 months with overall punctuality at 85.8 per cent.

The body of a bushwalker was found at Werribee Gorge State Park last week. Searchers found the 35-year-old’s body at the base of the gorge. The hiker had been planning a 10 kilometre walk around the Werribee Gorge Circuit Track. Melton residents can now walk among the gum trees and around the botanic lake, with the Melton Botanic Trail officially opened. The trail connects the Melton Botanic Gardens to the Toolern Creek shared path and provides a walking path around the lake. The trail consists of three pedestrian bridges, a boardwalk, a kilometre of shared path and new landscaping features. Melton mayor Cr Bob Turner, said: “The Melton Botanic Garden is a great asset to the City of Melton, providing environmental, health and wellbeing benefits to residents and visitors alike. “The garden attracts local visitors, and

guests from interstate and beyond, who come to explore our natural treasures in a beautiful, local setting. “With works to the Melton Botanic Trail complete, a link between this wonderful community space and other significant environmental assets has created something truly special for our community.” The $800,000 project received $190,900 from the state government under the Growing Suburbs Fund. Police are investigating after a car containing five youths collided with a brick wall in Vermont. The occupants included a 16-year-old Brookville girl, and a 17-year-old girl and a 19-year-old woman, both from Melton. Stand-off over shooting range By Esther Lauaki Moorabool council, residents and a landowner are locked in a stand-off over a proposed shooting range at a Balliang farm. A planning application was first refused in February to develop an outdoor shooting range and associated earthworks at the 115-hectare Moretons Road property. A new application, with a number of changes including adding clubrooms, building a smaller shooting range and noise barriers, was considered at council’s December meeting. But councillors voted against officers’ recommendations to grant a permit with conditions and instead deferred their decision until the new year to allow for negotiations between the landowner, Garry Jones, and neighbours who objected to the project. The neighbours’ main objection was excessive noise. Planning officer Mark Lovell said Mr Jones has changed the proposal to lessen the impact on neighbours. Councillors originally refused the permit on the grounds that the proposal does not comply with the Moorabool planning scheme, did not fit with the area’s land uses and negatively impacted neighbouring properties. There is another shooting range further west, but within earshot, of the proposed Balliang east range. “Cumulative effect of two shooting ranges side by side with excessive hours of operation was a valid concern in the previous planning application,” Mr Lovell said. “Reducing the shooting days, reducing the shooting times and restrictions to the type of ammunition will lead to an acceptable arrangement.”

During the annual Melton Valley Rotary club’s charity race night at Tabcorp Park in October, Melton Foodbank was among three organisations to receive $6000 each. Melton rotarian Brendan Richards said the event raised about $18,000, which adds to more than $100,000 raised over the past seven years. Denise Morris from Melton Foodbank said: “The Melton Foodbank doesn’t receive funding like the Salvation Army does, so donations like this go a long way.” “This donation will go right through January, it will keep the food stock up and will help cover service costs such as gas and electricity.” Melton Foodbank will help out 200 to 220 families across the months of December and January. “I want to give a huge thank you to the Rotary Club for staying with us for the last 20 years. There is an urgent need for emergency foster care for children throughout the western suburbs. MacKillop Family Services is looking for people in the Melton and Moorabool area to join their new foster care program, First Call Foster Care. MacKillop Family Services is an after hours service which takes calls from police and child protection teams when an emergency placement is needed for a child or young person. Carers in the new program will be part of a roster system to ensure that each evening and weekend there is home-based care placement available for children who are unable to live at home with their family because of a significant risk of harm or abuse. Team manager Darren Rose said a shortage of emergency carers is the team’s biggest problem. “We just don’t have enough homes in the region for the numbers of young kids who need help in circumstances that are beyond their control,” he said. “To make things worse, often the only home we can find is out of their region. The stress and trauma from a placement breakdown is significant enough without a child feeling further isolated by being taken away from everything that is routine and familiar to them.” Carers in the program would be rostered on for one week every month, with three weeks off. For the week they are on roster, they will receive financial compensation whether they have a child in their care or not. In addition, for each night the carers look after a child, they will receive reimbursement per child. This new model is suitable for people who are not caring for other children or young people,

The Force Will Be Out in Strength Victoria Police will be conducting Operation Roadwise during the 2017 Christmas/New Year Holiday for 24 day from Friday 15 December 2017 to Sunday 7 January 2018 to reduce road trauma over this high risk period. Sergeant Marty Wallace from Westgate Highway Patrol said “During this Road Policing Operation, Victoria Police will implement a strategically co-ordinated and tactically focused approach targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma – Speed, Alcohol and Drug Impairment, Mobile Phones, Fatigue and Seatbelts/Restraint Non Compliance.” Police will be targeting drivers who attend the end of year work functions as it has been identified that there is a risk that some drivers will take risks whilst they are impaired by alcohol and drugs. Motorists will see numerous Police units on our major arterial roads during this holiday period and speed cameras will be set up in identified speed and high collision locations throughout the State. Those planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways. Drivers should plan their trips, be patient and ensure that they have frequent breaks when driving long distances.

Pet flaws still endearing By Esther Lauaki A Bacchus Marsh veterinarian is encouraging animal lovers to see the beauty in the flaws when adopting pets this festive season. Twelve-year-old Tabitha was surrendered to the Moorabool council more than a month ago but remains without a home. Veterinarian Dr Brittany Sykes, who works with the council to care for stray animals, said Tabitha was pregnant and afraid when council officers brought her to the vet centre. “Tabitha’s previous owners parted ways and couldn’t continue to house her,” Dr Sykes said. “She was clearly well cared for … adores people but gets quite overwhelmed with dogs, and other cats so she is best suited to a single cat household.” Tabitha was among the nearly 100 unwanted pets surrendered to the council throughout this year – most of them cats. Dr Sykes said there is usually a rise in the number of kittens brought through the clinic over the Christmas period as kitten season hits its peak. She encouraged anyone wanting to adopt pets to consider taking home an older cat or one that might be “less desirable”. “To us they are all perfect, no matter how many legs, how many eyes, fuzzy or bald, chubby or scrawny,” Dr Sykes said. “The older animals are often overlooked, as are animals with pre-existing conditions. “The sad thing is that kittens are swept up and adopted as they are understandably gorgeous and sweet, but they do need a lot of work.” She reminded potential pet owners, once the excitement of Christmas holidays fades, to continue giving as much attention and care to pets as possible.

Light shines on Caroline Springs crime A $250,000 state government grant will help shine a light on the lake in Caroline Springs in the hope it will reduce crime in the community. Installation of lighting around Lake Caroline aims to promote public use of the area at night and increase natural surveillance and perceptions of community safety. Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz last week announced the funding for Melton council through the latest round of Public Safety Infrastructure Fund grants. Councils across Victoria will share in more than $3.4 million funding for 20 projects. “The Andrews Labor government is proud to be partnering with Melton City Council to help increase public safety in Caroline Springs,” Ms Kairouz said. “This project will open up Lake Caroline and increase natural surveillance of the area. “This means women, families, and the wider community can feel safer using this space. “We are delivering a record $2 billion to recruit more police and deliver stronger laws, but these grants recognise the importance of the community’s input in enhancing safety at a local level.” Esther Lauaki

Blast over west’s illegal brothels By Alesha Capone Illegal brothels offering unsafe sex practices are operating rampantly in Melbourne’s west, according to legal brothels and escort agencies. Australian Adult Entertainment Industry’s William Albon said he had been told by a legal brothel owner that 30 to 40 illegal brothels were running in locations across Williamstown, Footscray, Altona, Sunshine, Point Cook and Werribee. The owner of another legal brothel located in the west said there were websites on which illegal brothels advertised their services, often with photos.

He said many of the advertisements asked for “cash only” from clients and included unlicensed sex workers operating in Caroline Springs, Hoppers Crossing, Werribee, Tarneit, Williams Landing, Ardeer and St Albans. “Some of the photos they are using are quite gross and some of the services the girls offer are quite unsafe and illegal, such as sex without a condom,” he said. The owner of a different legal brothel said there were at least four illegal brothels “operating quite openly” in Newport. “The bigger problem is trafficking girls – we have been asked on two occasions if we wanted girls (European girls) supplied to us by men

MY PLACE Peter Bartello has been a stalwart of High Street for nearly 40 years. He talks to Esther Lauaki about how Melton has changed over the decades. What is your connection to Melton? My connection to Melton goes back to 1988 when I opened a branch of Home Entertainment Centres in High Street. Back then it was still a rather sleepy satellite city. Although I don’t live in Melton it has become my second home as I have spent the last 30 years doing business in the area, I consider myself a local. You have been running the Home Entertainment Centre in High Street for many years, how has the business changed over the years?

Home Entertainment Centres was established in 1980 in St Albans, initially retailing all things home entertainment, then the computer revolution came along and completely took over the store. Eventually it branched out to four stores; St Albans, Melton, Werribee and Cranbourne. We rode the wave of success that came with the computer boom. The shop is due to close at the end of this month after 37 years. What’s next for you? Several years ago I decided to begin planning the wind down to retirement. I kept the Melton store as a back-up for my then teenage children in the event that they wished to continue in the industry. With all the children firmly set on their own career paths in the areas of their passions, it has become time to wind down and follow my desires for travel and adventures. With keen interests and participation in motor racing, aviation, camping, boating, 4x4

touring, and overseas travel I will certainly not be left wanting for things to do. The people of Melton have been fantastic with their level of support for the business over the years and I would like to thank them very much. It has been a pleasure to have been able to employ local Melton residents and to assist the schools with their work experience programs over the past 30 years.

You must have seen a lot of changes in the area. Tell me about the most memorable. Melton over the years has continued to show explosive growth and has transformed from a regional town to a city, offering a full range of services whilst still maintaining that country feel. I can remember when High Street was the Western Highway with all traffic passing

through town, with a constant stream of traffic passing our doors. Life on High Street changed once again with the opening of Woodgrove Shopping Centre becoming the new after-school hub for teenagers. The lack of traffic and the multicultural diversity that is now coming to Melton is enhancing the experience available in Melton. It has been great.

SPORT New Darley netball coach embraces the challenge An ambition to get back to senior coaching led Chris Bandel to the Darley Netball Club. Having coached Trentham’s under-19s in the Maryborough Castlemaine District Netball League this year, Bandel was keen to extend his coaching skills. Thinking he might be a chance to take on the B or C grade coaching gigs at the Devils, Bandel was offered the A grade role – and happily accepted. “The Ballarat [Netball] League is a higher standard and the pressure and challenges that came with it excited me,” he said. “I was at Trentham for two years, the first just as an umpire and this year coaching the under-17s. I also coached the under-17s girls to two domestic premierships. “It’ll be fantastic to get back into seniors coaching.” He replaces playing coach Renee Hulls, who has left the club after one season. Bandel, who lives in Melton, said the reduced travel was something that also attracted him to

the Darley role. He knows that he’s got no easy task in front of him, with the Devils finishing ninth, with four wins and five games outside the top six this year. Bandel said there was likely to be a few personnel changes. “We are starting behind the eight ball,” he said. “The challenge is to get into finals. There’s things I bring to the game which I think will help. “My biggest thing is team culture and building the processes around that. If you can get that right, it really helps. “My aim is to be a stronger, tighter-knit group. I’m still working on a few players to try and get them across.” Bandel said he would focus on promoting the club’s under-17 and under-19 players into the senior side to give them experience, while still playing games for their age groups. He’s seen several of the younger players in his role as an umpire in Bacchus Marsh and has been impressed by what he saw.

“I’m big on pushing the juniors through into seniors,” he said. “I would rather give them a quarter here and there than having the B-grade girls sit on the bench for A-grade and not get much court time and miss out on a game completely. “I’d rather them play full games in B-grade so they’re getting court time.” Bandel’s wife, Bridget Bandel, has been appointed the B-grade coach. Also a high level umpire like Chris, her role will mark a return to coaching after a few years off. Megan Jackson has been appointed C-grade coach. Bad day spurs Sharks By Tara Murray One bad day of cricket was the catalyst for Sydenham-Hillside’s strong form in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s north A1 competition. After a first-up win against Caroline Springs, the Sharks were left disappointed by their performance on day one of their clash with Moonee Valley the next week. Sharks captain-coach Kane Twentyman said they were comprehensively outplayed – a performance they didn’t want to see again. “We’ve played one bad day of cricket for the season,” he said. “It cost us against Moonee Valley. They came out to play and were switched on and smashed us on day one. “I worked with the boys for them to at least come out even on day two, if not win the day. The second day was much better. “That’s been the level we’ve been at for the rest of the matches.” The Sharks have since won the rest of their matches and head into the final round before Christmas second on the ladder, behind Moonee Valley. Twentyman said the team was focused on lifting the bar. They set a goal to go through November undefeated in the north A1 and T20 competitions and succeeded. Twentyman said that one poor day early in the season wasn’t far from their minds. “We are the hunted, having played in the grand final last season,” he said. “We keep asking them to put the best foot forward in standards, commitments, training and the cause. We’ve asked the boys to step up.” Twentyman said he was pleased with the start to the season with several new players coming into the mix. “It takes time to gel,” he said. “It’s about getting comfortable working out who does what at each time. Who can bat for a long time and who can bowl a long spell.” He said the two Sri Lankan imports, Shanaka Silva and Kaluwahandi Prasad, had exceeded expectations in their first season at the club. Silva has taken 12 wickets in the north A1 competition, while Prasad is averaging 60 with the bat. Ben Luca, who returned to the club this season, has also added batting depth. The Sharks faced Barkley Street Uniting on Saturday in a one-dayer, after Star Weekly went to press. Twentyman was hoping for a win against the bottom side. Rockbank rebuilds Leigh McInerney will take the coaching reins solo at Rockbank for next year’s Riddell District Football League season. After sharing the job with Leigh Sporle this year, McInerney will go it alone in 2018 as work commitments mean Sporle can’t re-commit. Rams football operations manager Gavin Sporle said McInerney was ready to go round again. He said things had been going smoothly during the off season after a coaching change midway through the last pre-season. Sporle said early signs were good that the club would continue rebuilding. After stepping back in the past two years and focusing on getting everything right off field, the Rams have started to see results on the field. The Rams finished 11th this year with two wins after not winning a game the year before. Sporle said there had been solid numbers on the track so far. “We’re still talking to a lot of players and potential recruits,” he said. “We haven’t got any new signings at this point and we’re not in the position to pay overs to players. “We want to consolidate for another season … continuing to focus on getting the club into the position we want to be.” Scott Matthews has been appointed reserves coach, while Saxon Woodroffe will again coach the under-19s. Sporle said Tom Evans, who is returning to Diggers Rest, was the only big out so far. He said the club was continuing to look for players for its seniors, reserves and under-19 teams as well as the club’s junior arm, the Western Rams. This year was the first time the club had fielded a junior football team for a number of years and it is keen to add further sidesr. Sporle said the club was also keen to get a junior netball program running, as it looked to provide pathways from the junior club sides to seniors in both football and netball. While the Holden Trax small sports utility vehicle showed a 25 per cent increase in sales in Australia in 2016, Holden is not standing on its laurels and has added to the range with a mid-spec LT. Slotting in between the LS entry-level and range-topping LTZ, it is intended to put Holden at the leading edge of in-car connectivity in the small SUV segment. Holden says it is estimated that about 77 per cent of Australians own at least one smartphone and check them more than 150 times a day, so the company became the first in Australia to offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone systems as standard across the range. Along with this has come new stylish design both inside and out. Trax LS, with automatic transmission benefits from the same 1.4-litre turbocharged engine as the LT and LTZ providing improved performance and fuel economy. The front-wheel drive Trax ranges in price from $23,990, plus on-road costs, to $30,490 and comes with Holden’s five-year 100,000-kilometre warranty and lifetime capped price servicing. The Trax LT on test turned out to be one of the sharper models in the segment. The six-speed automatic transmission with Active Select drives the front wheels. It has been calibrated by Holden engineers for Australian conditions and is in sync with suspension tailored to Australian roads. Advanced chassis systems such as a descent

control, hill start assist and electronic stability control incorporating anti-lock braking, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution and traction control have helped win for Trax five-star ANCAP safety rating in Australasia. All models are fitted with a reversing camera and rear parking sensors. Trax also incorporates features an optimised front end for pedestrian protection. The 1.4-litre engine normally performs without fuss, but has a harsh note when pushed. Active Select is operated via a single button on the tip of the centre console-mounted gearshift lever. Straight-line stability is good, while gone are the days of tall vehicle body roll and choppy ride of a short wheelbase. The Trax’s ride and handling are high end – the Aussie engineers have seen to that. While the Holden Trax forged a new standard in class-leading connectivity with the outside world, unlike some rivals, it is not available in an all-wheel drive version.
