Pups buck a tradition This spring has sprung a surprise at Toolern Vale’s Dingo Discovery Sanctuary and Research Centre. Dingoes Cooma and Crusoe welcomed a litter of pups last month – outside the usual breeding season. Dingo Discovery owner Lyn Watson said the arrival of the five dingo pups in October “was a great surprise”. She said dingo pups were typically born in the colder months. The five pups join the 18 born this winter at the centre. The unseasonal litter presented another welcome surprise – two of the pups have white fur. “Under five per cent of the dingo population have white fur,” Ms Watson said. Members of the public are being invited to share a cuddle with the sanctuary’s newest residents. Sessions will be held every weekend until December 17. Vandals hit creek again By Esther Lauaki Toolern Creek in Melton’s west has been hit by vandals twice in recent weeks, prompting residents to call for more “respect” for the area. About 40 plastic tree guards, used to protect newly planted trees, were removed and strewn on the creek banks and in the creek last week. The latest act comes after vandals scrawled racist slurs and symbols across walls at nearby Toolern Creek Reserve last month.

Thousands of trees are planted each year by community volunteers and Melton council workers. Friends of Toolern Creek president Lyn Holdsworth said group members hand-watered the plants from the creek using buckets. She said it was frustrating to see people “disrespect” the hard work that was being done. “Melton council officer Tony Herwerth notified me what they had done,” she said. “My grandson came down with me and we collected

the guards and brought them back to the car.” She said the guards were necessary to protect the plants from wind and sun. “If the guards are taken off, with this windy and hot weather, it’s not likely the plants will survive,” she said. Melton council operations manager Leslie Stokes said the council was “extremely disappointed” by the vandalism at Toolern Creek Reserve and urged anyone who witnessed vandalism to report it to police.

Ms Holdsworth said vandalism happened regularly at Toolern Creek and in surrounding parkland and residents were helpless to stop it. “Over the years this happens a lot and we just grin and bear it,” she said. “What more can you do? I’ve been doing this for 14 years and it happens every now and then. “We just have to focus on how many trees make it. If I focused on what could happen, we’d overlook all the thousands of trees that have been planted. People don’t see that part of the park and so it’s very difficult to patrol.”

Ambo response times improve By Stella Tzobanakis Ambulance response times are on the improve in Melton, despite dealing with one of the worst flu periods in memory. On average, Melton recorded a 5.1 per cent or 43 second improvement on the same period last year. But the times remain the slowest in the west. Figures for July 1 to September 30 show 74.4 per cent of ambulances responded within 15 minutes in Melton, with the average time 12 minutes and 48 seconds.

Ambulance Victoria’s benchmark for life-saving code 1 responses is 85 per cent arriving within 15 minutes. The average response times from fastest to slowest across the western suburbs were Maribyrnong (10.31), Moreland (11.09), Brimbank (11.10), Hobsons Bay (11.19), Moonee Valley (12.01), Hume (12.16), Wyndham (12.29) and Melton (12.48). Ambulance Victoria chief executive Tony Walker said the period covered one of the worst flu seasons on record. “Our role in distributing ambulances across

the hospital system also helped patients to be seen quicker and released ambulances to respond to time-critical emergencies,” Mr Walker said. He said the likelihood of more major incidents and extreme weather would continue to test the system. Steve McGhie, a spokesperson for the Victoria branch of Ambulance Employees Australia, said the latest figures were a mixed result for Melton. “It is pleasing to see in the Melton area that the trend has now moved to a positive direction

where response has improved by 43 seconds comparing to the same time last year,” Mr McGhie said. “This means that paramedics in Melton are arriving at very ill patients quicker and saving more lives. “The government, Ambulance Victoria and paramedics have worked collaboratively to bring response times down. “But clearly there still is much more work to be done in the Melton area to achieve the benchmark figure of 85 per cent code 1 responses in less than 15 minutes.”

There is a bounce in the step of 14 Arnolds Creek Primary School pupils after they came home victorious from the recent national skipping championships. The team is still buzzing from its win at the Xtreme Skipping championships on the Gold Coast in September, taking home medals in speed skipping, pairs and individual freestyle events and a silver in the pairs speed section. They outskipped more than 2000 competitors. Four children have since qualified to compete in multiple events at national level.

Punctuality on the Ballarat rail line has improved to its highest level in 10 months, with 88.2 per cent of services arriving at their destinations on time last month. The October figures show a two-percentage point jump in on-time performance compared with the previous month. V/Line chief executive James Pinder said punctuality was continuing to improve. “This is the highest on-time performance figure for the Ballarat line since December last year, so it’s an encouraging result,” he said. Mr Pinder said reliability for the Ballarat line last month was also pleasing, exceeding the 96 per cent target of services delivered. Across the network, 97.6 per cent of services were delivered in October. Construction is under way on the $518 million Ballarat line upgrade, which Mr Pinder said would deliver more frequent and reliable services for passengers. Work has started at Hopkins Road in Rockbank and includes construction of building site offices, toilets, storage facilities and access tracks to pave the way for work on the duplication of 18 kilometres of track between Deer Park West and Melton. Mr Pinder said the upgrade would allow V/Line to run extra services in peak hours and a train every 40 minutes in the off-peak.

Bail breachers get court out By Esther Lauaki More than 180 bail breaches in Melton were recorded in the past year. Statistics released by the Crime Statistics Agency Victoria revealed that the municipality had 186 breaches of bail for the year ending in June. There were 76 bail breaches in Moorabool. In a statement, Victoria Police said that areas with court houses – such as Melton and Moorabool, with a court located in Bacchus Marsh – usually had higher incidences of breaches of bail than those without courts.

Police said that there was no cause for community concern. “Local police target offenders wanted for failing to answer bail, prioritising offenders identified as being a high-risk to the community,” a police spokesperson said. “The addition of protective services officers in and around the public transport network has also led to an increase in the identification of individuals wanted on warrants for various offences, including breaching bail. “Beyond court attendance, a vast range of bail conditions can be set and include curfews,

requirements to reside at a particular address or reporting requirements. “These conditions are set to help ensure the safety of the public and help ensure that the alleged offender complies with the justice process.” Across Victoria, Melbourne topped the bail breaches list with 1303, followed by Frankston (658), Heidelberg (573) and Ringwood (565). In total, there were 14,075 bail breaches across Victoria for the 12-month period to June. That was significantly less than the 18,940 recorded in 2015.

But police said the number was still too high as bail breaches were easily avoided. “People who know they have outstanding warrants should come forward, rather than wait to get caught,” the police spokesperson said. Attorney-General Martin Pakula said last week the drop in bail breach numbers was “welcome”. “It could be due to a number of factors including fewer people are receiving bail,” he said. “We’ve really increased the consequences, particularly for absconding from bail.”

Council seeks pokies profit deal By Esther Lauaki An expansion of Hillside’s Sugar Gum hotel could introduce 20 more gaming machines into the Melton municipality. Councillors last week supported an application to amend an existing development plan, granted in 2003, to upgrade the hotel. The development plan included extensions to the venue, a new facade and more parking. The amendment was to increase the number of gaming machines at the hotel from 50 to 70. In a report, council officers said that the

increase in poker machines was within the council’s gaming policy. The Victorian Commission for Gaming and Liquor Regulation approved an increase in the number of gaming machines at the hotel in 2013, but Sugar Gum did not apply for a planning permit at the time and the machines were not installed. Last week councillors approved a planning permit for the development. Following a council officer’s recomendation they will seek discussions with the applicants, Pegasus Leisure Group, to influence how the revenue

from gaming machines is distributed back into the community. “I know that gaming machines are not a popular issue to support as councillors,” Cambridge ward councillor Kathy Majdlik said. “One of the big reasons I chose to support the [amendment of the plan] was because the officer’s recommendation is requesting that council try and enter into a legal agreement with the Sugar Gum Hotel for the provision and allocation of community contributions. “Our community isn’t benefited by the residents that actually use these machines,

whether it be for fun or addiction, however … this is a way that we as councillors can try and have a say in where these funds will go [so that they benefit the community].” “Hopefully that will mean more funds into our community groups.” Councillors Sophie Ramsey, Michelle Mendez and Ken Hardy voted against the approval. The number of poker machines currently in Melton is 503. Up to 659 machines could be permitted under the state government’s recent gambling reforms.

Tributes flow for bee victim A flag will fly at half-mast in Ballan, the hometown of a young gardener killed by a swarm of bees while working for Dunkeld’s Royal Mail Hotel. Tributes are flowing for “all-round great guy” Steven “Tangles” Tingate, who died last Wednesday morning after being attacked and stung multiple times in a produce garden run by the award-winning hotel. Co-workers tried to revive him and an ambulance was called to the MacArthur Street property, but he died at the scene. In Ballan, the bowling club said its members had the “heaviest of hearts” and would be flying the Australian flag at half-mast. “We are all saddened to hear of your passing, and hope you rest peacefully,” the club posted on Facebook. “RIP Buddy.” The club will run a raffle night with all proceeds going to Mr Tingate’s family. The Ballan Football Netball Club posted that the community would feel a big loss. “You will be sorely missed by so many, young man,” the club said. Friend Taylor Bryant also took to social media to post a tribute. “What sad news. RIP mate, was a pleasure to know you,” he wrote. Mr Tingate moved to the southern Grampians town a year ago and had told people he loved his new job. The Royal Mail Hotel is one of the state’s most popular dining destinations. General manager Mark Whitnell said the thoughts of everyone connected with the

business were with their colleague’s loved ones. “Tonight (Wednesday) our new restaurant … will not operate,” he said. “This is to pay respect to the family and friends and in support of our team.” Mr Tingate’s death is being investigated by WorkSafe. Dr Ronelle Welton, from the University of Melbourne, said many people did not know they could have allergic reactions to bee venom. “The only cause of death historically from bee stings is from anaphylaxis due to the bee venom,” she said. “The bee venom itself is very limited, but it’s our body’s reaction to it that’s the key thing.” Dr Welton said tests to discover bee venom allergies were available and the allergy could be successfully treated. www.allergy.org.au – The Age

Find a fur-ever home The RSPCA needs your help to find homes for 200 cats in just four days. The four-day blitz starts on November 23 and goes until Sunday, November 26. Cat adoption fees will be reduced from $120 to just $39 at all RSPCA Victoria animal care centres and participating Petbarn stores during the campaign. Kittens under four months will still be the usual $195. In the past financial year, more than 4000 kittens came into RSPCA Victoria shelters between November and April. The “Catpacity” promotion will help rehome thousands of homeless kittens and cats and create an awareness about kitten season. RSPCA Victoria chief executive Dr Liz Walker, said: “Many people don’t realise that

cats can start breeding as young as five months. Some may breed up to five litters through spring, summer and autumn.” Every cat up for adoption has been desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and had veterinary checks. “We really want to emphasise that the relatively low cost of desexing far outweighs the cost to the community of caring for cats and kittens,” Dr Walker said. “We want to facilitate as many lifelong bonds between owners and cats as possible, but we need to break this cycle of homelessness that so many of these beautiful creatures experience. MY PLACE Melton’s Alec Beaton has piped at every Melton dawn service for the past 31 years. The proud Scotsman talked to Esther Lauaki about his love for his clan and country.

I’ve lived in Melton since 1978. My employment circumstances changed and we started looking for a bigger house and found an affordable house in Melton. We’ve been in the same house for the past 39 years. How did you come to be involved with the Melton Returned and Services League? I didn’t serve in the military. I saw an article in the Melton Telegraph by the RSL about its upcoming dawn service for Anzac Day. A lot of people close to me, all my relations, had served in the war and many were prisoners of war. So when I saw the article, I contacted the RSL and asked if they needed a bagpiper to play at the dawn service and I’ve played at every event for the past 31 years. How long have you been playing the bagpipes? I first picked up the bagpipes when I was 10 years old and I turn 82 in January. I’ve played them even up until last night. A very close friend of mine first lent me some bagpipes when he got some new ones for Christmas when we were young. Piping has led me into different areas of the Scottish culture. I played with the boys brigade pipe band and when I became too old I took a break to concentrate on my studies and trained to become an engineer.

You were awarded a Spirit of Anzac medal on Remembrance Day. How do you feel? I wasn’t able to serve because I was too medically high grade because I have an artificial eye. But the connection to the Anzacs and the war efforts is still very strong. I found other ways to serve. I was very honoured to get the medal. What other hats do you wear in the community? I’ve played in the Clans of the West band that played for the Djerriwarrh Festival. I played in the Royal Edinburgh Tattoo with that band in 2005. In the past Melbourne University Regiment and I also play for the Williamstown RSL pipe band and have been a pipe sergeant there. I’ve organised a Scottish night every February in the area for many years. I’m a qualified teacher in Scottish country dancing as well. What would people be surprised to know about you? I’m an introvert. The face that most people present is extroverted in nature but I much prefer to listen than speak. What is the best thing about living in Melton? The people. My family grew up here and many of our friends live here.

Gingerbread Christmas cookies INGREDIENTS Cookies • 160g unsalted butter • 140g castor sugar • 180g brown sugar • 3 eggs • 2 tbsp molasses • 500g plain flour • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder • 2 tsp ground cinnamon • 3 tsp mixed spice • 2 tbsp ground ginger Lemon Icing • 1 1/2 lemons, juiced • 300g pure icing sugar, sifted METHOD Cream butter and sugars in a food processor. Add the eggs and molasses and process until combined. Add remaining ingredients and bring together to a smooth dough. Rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180C fan-forced or 200C conventional. Line a baking tray with baking paper. On a floured surface, roll out dough to 1 centimetre thick and cut out cookies. Lift on to lined tray, leaving a couple of centimetres between each, and bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden. They will still be a little soft when they come out of the oven so leave to cool on the tray. To make the lemon icing, mix together the icing sugar and lemon juice until you have a thick honey-like consistency - adjust with more sugar or juice if needed. Dip the cooled biscuits in the icing or decorate using a squeeze bottle or piping bag - you can also set edible silver balls in the icing to add a little more sparkle - and place on a rack to set.

North Western Titans have a clear indication of where they sit in the Baseball Vic Summer League division 3 season. Stepping up to division 3 this season, Titans coach Danny Haymes knew it would take a while to settle into this level. After playing every team once, Haymes said they thought they could contend for a finals spot. He said they spent a lot of the first round of matches getting information about the rest of the competition. The Titans sit fifth with a 2-4 record after eight rounds, having had two byes. “We’re out of the top four for the first time in awhile,” he said. “I think there will be three teams fighting for fourth spot. “There’s only one team we may struggle against.

“The rest of the side’s we can be competitive against as long as we have a full squad.” The Titans, who had a bye at the weekend, have lost their past three matches, but Haymes said unavailability of players had hurt them badly. “We had four players out of our first team the last few weeks,” he said. “We knew heading into the season that we didn’t have depth and when we’re missing key players it will really hurt us. Among them are three of our best batters and we’ve struggled to get runs.” Haymes said while missing key players has hurt, it has given some players the opportunity to step up into the top side. The Titans have several players in the squad that have never played at this level. “The way I look at it, the positive thing is we’ve given guys a lot of opportunities,” he

said. “Brendan Sell, Kyle Newman and Daniel Taylor are three guys who have never played baseball and have been able to step up and haven’t played bad. They’ll put pressure on the players coming back.” Haymes, who has played one game back in the seconds after hurting his hand, said they expected three of their four missing players to return this week. The Melton-based team plays its next group of matches on the road, before playing most of the back end of the season at home. The Titans’ second side has struggled a little with players having to step up to the top grade. In good news for the club, the junior team remains undefeated. Eagles fall back to earth By Tara Murray Eynesbury got its first real test in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade season, but was left disappointed. The Eagles, which have won their first three games quite easily, faced a challenge against undefeated St Anthonys. After a poor week one, when they conceded nearly 300 runs, the Eagles struggled with the bat on Saturday and were beaten convincingly. Eagles playing coach Luke Castle said it was a poor game overall. “It wasn’t a good day and we were chasing 100 runs too many to start with. “It was good to see where we are at and we were missing three players from our best side … Next time we will have a real crack. “Chasing 300 without our best side was always going to be hard.” The Eagles, who had scored 290 plus in the past two games, were bowled out for 159 in the 59th over. Castle said the side was a little shell-shocked after its top order didn’t get the normal start it was accustomed to. Opener Tristan Francis was one of those missing, while the Castle brothers, Luke and Hayden, weren’t able to continue their outstanding form. “There’s a lot of pressure on Hayden when we are chasing 300,” Castle said. “We lost Hayden early and boys were shell-shocked as they expected him to make a lot of runs. It didn’t work out that way.” For the Saints, skipper Cameron Clayton was the pick of the bowlers taking 3-41. Despite the loss, Castle said there had been a lot of positives out of the first four rounds. “We were hoping to be competitive, but the way we’ve been playing I think we could play finals,” he said. “Making finals would be a success for us with a really young side and our first season in B-grade.” This week, the Eagles face Wallan, which is also coming off its first loss of the season. Castle said it would be another good test to see where they sit within the competition. “I see Wallan as flag favourites,” he said. “If we perform well it’s a good indication of where we are at. From what I’ve been told, they had six or seven players out. “We are expecting them to bounce back.” In other results, Bacchus Marsh had a big win against Macedon. The Bulls, who made 5-282 on day one, bowled Macedon out for 188. Lachlan Payne took 3-18. Gisborne’s 7-327 was too much for Kyneton, Ashfield upset Wallan and East Sunbury was too good for Riddell in the other games.

Games thrills for swimmers Four Melton Swimming Club members will compete at the School Sport Australia 10th Pacific School Games next month in Adelaide. The four swimmers will compete for the Victorian team against swimmers from other states and territories, along with athletes from 14 other countries. The Pacific Games will also double as the Australian School Championships. Melton’s Sam Sutherland said the club was excited to see what the four swimmers could achieve on an international stage. Alisha Walters, Francine Cartina, Thomas Sutherland and Jack Morrow, will compete in a combined 28 events, 19 individual races and nine relays. They are hoping to take home gold, but are also aiming to deliver personal bests. Cartina, who goes to school at St George Preca School in Caroline Springs, has swum at a previous Australian Championships. Walters, who attends Gilson College, said she was proud to put on the Victorian uniform for the first time and was looking forward to meeting people. Sutherland, who goes to Sydenham-Hillside Primary School, said he felt it was a privilege to swim at the event and he was focusing on his preparation. Morrow attends St Dominic’s School in Melton. Meanwhile, 31 Melton swimmers competed at the Victorian Spring Championships at the weekend. Karlos Nuestro won a gold medal in the 50-metre breaststroke in his age group and made another final. Lions in a ton of trouble By Tara Murray A century to Nathan Taylor wasn’t enough for Melton to keep its unbeaten start to the Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association’s north-west competition intact. Facing a competitive Brunswick side, the Lions went into the match looking to get an indication of where they sit against the best sides. After conceding 9-254 with the bat on day one, the Lions had a task ahead of them on Saturday. They were in trouble early at 3-41, before a 50-run partnership between Taylor and David Kirk. Kirk then fell for 35 and the Lions continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. At 8-138, it looked like the game could soon be over. Taylor, with the support of Dylan Clarke, had other ideas and batted out the rest of the innings for the Lions to finish 8-200. Taylor finished 101 not out, while Clarke, who came in at number 10, finished 11 not out. Only four players reached double figures for the Lions in the disappointing result. It’s the Lions’ first loss this season and it means they slip to fourth on the ladder, with Brunswick remaining on top. The match was one of just three in the division to get a result, with four other matches unable to be finished because of rain. The Lions are determined to return to the winners’ list this weekend against Preston, which sits 2-2. Meanwhile, the Lions defeated Ringwood in the Women’s Victorian Premier Cricket seconds one-day competition. The Lions made 9-109 and it proved to be enough, bowling Ringwood out for 89. Janelle Hayhurst took four wickets for the Lions.

How the changed road rules work Some road rules have recently changed, so here are the things you need to know to keep driving safely and avoid a fine. The new road rules came into effect on July 1 and encompass both moving and stationary vehicles. ROAD RULE 62 – GIVING WAY WHEN TURNING AT AN INTERSECTION WITH LIGHTS When turning, motorists must give way to cyclists riding across crossings at a green bicycle crossing light. ROAD RULE 79A – APPROACHING AND PASSING STATIONARY OR SLOW-MOVING POLICE VEHICLES, EMERGENCY VEHICLES, ENFORCEMENT VEHICLES AND ESCORT VEHICLES A 40km/h speed limit applies when passing a stationary police vehicle, emergency vehicle, enforcement vehicle or escort vehicle with flashing lights or sounding an alarm. ROAD RULE 154 – BUS LANES Riding a bicycle or driving a coach in bus lane (unless otherwise signed) is permitted. A coach is defined as a motor vehicle used to convey passengers for hire or reward or in the course of trade or business that is greater than 9.5 metres in length (excluding any trailer). ROAD RULE 179 – STOPPING IN A LOADING ZONE The rule has been clarified to include the

requirement that a goods carrying vehicle should be only used in a loading zone to pick up or drop off goods. ROAD RULE 213 – MAKING A VEHICLE SECURE The rule has been amended to allow a refrigerated food transport vehicle to be left running for the purpose of food safety. ROAD RULE 270 – WEARING MOTORCYCLE HELMET The rule has been amended so a person pushing a motorcycle with the engine turned off does not have to wear a helmet. ROAD RULE 271 – RIDING ON MOTORCYCLES The rule has been amended to allow a person to stand on the footrests or footboard, or remove one foot from a footrest or footboard, if it is safe to do so.
