By Sumeyya Ilanbey A Facebook page is not a “substitute” for an effective police response in Melton and Caroline Springs, according to the Police Association. The union’s response to the launch of the Melton Eyewatch page by Victoria Police came as residents persisted with calls for more boots on the ground. The page’s aim is to engage with Melton and Caroline Springs residents following increased safety concerns. “It’s a bit of a relief – not 100 per cent relief,” one resident said at a community meeting. “I think the only thing that will make us safer is more police on the roads.” While some residents welcomed the announcement of the page, one described it as a “whitewash”. “I feel so much safer now that we got Eyewatch!” Steve wrote on Facebook. “They should call it ‘whitewash’! Lol.” Police Association secretary Ron Iddles said Melton and Caroline Springs communities had been “begging” for Victoria Police to allocate more resources to combat increasing crime. “Technology that empowers the community to speak to their police is a welcome initiative and Eyewatch has proven to be good for this purpose, but it is in no way a substitute for an effective police service,” Mr Iddles said. “Police have been saying for months that they are at breaking point. They are working with dangerously low police numbers and need additional support

to meet the needs of this community.” Frontline police needed to be re-allocated to areas of greatest need, including Melton and Caroline Springs, while the additional 300 frontline police announced in this year’s state budget were being trained, he said. State Police Minister Lisa Neville said residents had been asking for an Eyewatch page for several months and that it would be an “important tool” in providing the community with accurate information. “We’ve got an increase in crime and we need to be able to meet the expectations around additional policing,” she said. Deputy commissioner Andrew Crisp said Victoria Police was aware of challenges being faced by suburbs experiencing population booms and was “very focused” on deciding where the additional 300 frontline police would be allocated. But he would not be drawn on when the announcement would be made or if Melton would receive the additional 80 police officers identified by the Police Association as being needed. When Star Weekly asked if a Facebook page was a sufficient response to police describing under-resourcing in the area as reaching “crisis point” and residents fearing for their lives, he said Eyewatch was “one part of the overall picture”. “It’s a local solution for a local issue,” he said. Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Sunday plans for new carjacking laws carrying jail sentences of up to 25 years.

Fears raised over housing density By Sumeyya Ilanbey A Moorabool councillor fears the character of Bacchus Marsh will change if the town’s housing strategy encourages high-density residential developments. Councillors last week voted to support Housing Bacchus Marsh to 2041, a document that sets out housing supply and demand, identifies housing-stock diversity targets, provides policy guidance to enable “orderly growth”, and develops a strategy for residential growth that considers the specific pressures for housing in Bacchus Marsh.

West Moorabool ward councillor Tom Sullivan said he was concerned at a lack of protection in the document to uphold the neighbourhood characteristics of Bacchus Marsh. “If you look at the [overall] housing market, where do you see ourselves fitting in?” Cr Sullivan said. “Is there enough protection in here … to maintain ourselves within that [acceptable] band?” However, Moorabool council’s acting strategic and sustainable development manager, Andrew Goodsell, said the policy document would not “change the fabric” of the

town. It would, in fact, do the opposite, he said. “Currently, there is no neighbourhood character control and a lack of control for new developments,” Mr Goodsell said. “And about eight per cent of applications for houses are units; 92 per cent are for [traditional] houses. “[This document] looks at rebalancing that slightly to enable more choice.” Mr Goodsell said while the council supported and promoted high-density developments in the housing strategy, it would be “balanced in context”. East Moorabool ward councillor Tonia

Dudzik said the document would give council “greater control” of developments and strengthen its case at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal if developers objected to council’s decisions. During consultation on the document, Western Water, Wyndham council and the state Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources each made submissions, all supportiing council’s policy. The department urged greater housing density near public transport and identified seven precincts where it could be promoted, all of which were rejected by Moorabool council.

A Caroline Springs trader has won the war against corellas causing damage to her building and business. Quest Caroline Springs manager Natalie Bui enlisted the help of a pest controller after the corella problem at her serviced apartments got out of control. Full Flight Birds of Prey owner Graeme Coles released an eagle every day for a week three months ago to scare off the flock. Ms Bui said corellas haven’t returned since. “From my perspective, being a franchisee and general manager where we had numerous complaints from guests because of [corella] noises, I couldn’t have been more happier with the results,” Ms Bui said. “The guests who stay here are commenting, ‘Where have the corellas gone?’.” Ms Bui said birds would sharpen their beaks on the caulking of the windows and electrical wires of her business. Mr Coles believes corellas were flocking to Quest as a meeting spot because it is one of the tallest buildings in the area. “They were courting,” Mr Coles said. “What better way to show off to a potential partner – on top of a high building and flapping their wings?” The eagles were “very successful” in scaring off the corellas because of the natural predator-prey response, Mr Coles said. “This isn’t the golden wand and we can’t fix all pest bird problems, but it works.” Culling birds is illegal in Victoria and can carry a penalty of more than $10,000 per bird.

A Melton P-plater was arrested after allegedly being caught travelling at 150 km/h with a two-year-old in the car. Police stopped the 21-year-old on the Hume Freeway on Tuesday. Her car was impounded, and she will appear in Wangaratta Magistrates Court in September to answer a charge of speeding. Police also pulled over a second car, driven by the woman’s 23-year-old partner, who allegedly tested positive for drugs. His car was impounded and he was charged with speeding, driving while suspended and driving under the influence of drugs.

Mumpreneurs in the mix Juggling a business and children is never easy – just ask Melton mums Lara Jennings and Brooke Findley. They say they don’t balance their family life with work; instead they try to have everything “flow”. Sometimes it’s the kids who need more attention than the business and other times it’s vice versa. The pair are in the running for the AusMumpreneur title, an award that recognises Australian mums running businesses. Ms Jennings officially launched Offspring Education last year, while Ms Findley has been running online store The Organic Place for the past two years. “I think what makes a successful mumpreneur is someone who can look at a

problem and fix it,” Ms Jennings said. “What are my options and how can I fix it?” Unlike Ms Findley, Ms Jennings says she’s had family and friends she can rely on to help out. Safe havens to open in Melton By Sumeyya Ilanbey

Women and children escaping family violence will be offered one of 11 homes in Melton for long-term accommodation as part of the state government’s $50 million Rapid Housing Assistance program. The properties will be bought, or leased, and managed by community housing organisations. The state government announced plans to lease 100 properties and buy another 130 around the state after the Royal Commission into Family Violence handed down its findings in March. But it has already boosted these numbers, with plans to lease 124 homes and purchase 180. A Health and Human Services Department spokeswoman said the houses were expected to be available by the end of this financial year. She said the Melton municipality had been selected based on data revealing where the need for housing women and children fleeing domestic violence was identified. The spokeswoman said Housing Choices Australia, Launch Housing, Women’s Housing Limited and VincentCare Community Housing had been selected to operate the homes in Melton. “While the homes may be considered a refuge from family violence, they are not a women’s refuge in the true sense of the word,” the spokeswoman said. “Women’s refuges provide short-term crisis accommodation for women and children. This initiative is intended

to provide longer-term accommodation options to enable people to exit refuges. There is no specific time limit on the tenancy period.” Women’s Housing Limited chief executive Judy Line said the organisation would be managing two of the 11 homes in Melton. These will be long-term accommodation for women and their children escaping abusive partners or relatives.

“This housing is not crisis housing and it’s not transitional,” Ms Line said. “It’s affordable housing for women escaping family violence. “They generally have nothing when they leave; they’re really starting from scratch.” Ms Line said women would need to register for the program through the Health and Human Services department. The cost for houses under the program will depend on each woman’s income, Ms Line said, adding costs would not be more than 30 per cent of their gross income. “There won’t be any problems filling the houses,” she said. Housing Minister Martin Foley said that while some of the properties had been leased, the first homes were expected to be purchased by the end of the year. “This is crucial support for members of our community who are forced to flee their own homes,” Mr Foley said.

Freedom in the saddle Luke Eaton and Mickayla Prindable have had a rough start to life. Luke, 32, has cerebral palsy, affecting his muscle movement. Twenty-year-old Mickayla lost her sight after a battle with cancer when she was three years old. But the Melton pair have found “freedom” and friendship in riding horses. They train at Melton Equestrian Park several times a week and are headed to the Riding for the Disabled Association’s state dressage championships in Sydney this weekend. They are the only Victorians competing at the event. Mr Eaton’s mum and sister and Ms Prindable’s mum are their biggest fans.

Mr Eaton says he’s looking forward to “doing my best”, having fun and showing how well he can ride. “Horse riding gives me freedom,” he says. “I’ve made a lot of friends over the years because of it.” Ms Prindable hopes the competition will allow her to show off her skills and set her up to achieve her goal of becoming a Paralympian. “At the end of the year, I’m hoping to get classified, so for me it’s trying to get as much experience as possible.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

Demand soars for the family life By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton West house prices will soar, despite the suburb’s reputation as Victoria’s most affordable, a real estate agent has claimed. The median house price of $331,000 in the June quarter was up 3.5 per cent on the same period last year, Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) figures show. And Raine and Horne Melton director Kieran Carson said demand for the suburb had soared in the past six months following council and state government investment nearby.

He expects house prices to continue rising as demand builds. Mr Carson said houses in the suburbs also yield good rental returns for landowners. “In terms of value for money, [Melton West] is as good as you can get,” Mr Carson said. “Land prices in other areas are well and truly in excess of $200,000. “Here, you’re getting a block of land and a house for just over $300,000. “Affordable suburbs don’t last that long,” he said. “We’re expecting a significant price adjustment, just because we haven’t had that

price adjustment as much as other suburbs. Demand is there – in the last six months stock levels have dropped and demand has increased, producing a perfect storm for a vendor.” The expansion of the Woodgrove Shopping Centre, upgrades to roads and announcements of new children’s facilities have boosted the suburbs appeal, Mr Carson said. “It’s the family kind of facilities and parenting facilities that make it attractive. “Typically, buyers here, they need those kinds of amenities … because they’re young families.”

Mr Carson said families were able to build their “dream homes with white picket fences” at Melton West without breaking the bank. They flock to buy 500 to 600 square-metre blocks, to build 25-square metre homes, but Mr Carson said there’s not a lot of demand for units and villas. REIV chief executive Geoff White said Melton West offered the “ideal combination” of large land lots and affordable prices. “Given price increases across the city, we expect buyers to continue to seek value, gravitating towards outer Melbourne suburbs.”

Aim on the main game A young clay target shooter has the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in his sights after taking home team gold at an international competition last month. Plumpton teen Thomas Armstrong, 16, was victorious in the Australian junior team at the World Down The Line Championships in Ireland, alongside compatriots from Hay in New South Wales and Terang in Victoria. Thomas, who only took up the sport on New Year’s Day 2015, competed against shooters many years older than him. In Ireland over seven days of practice and intense competition, Thomas also finished seventh individually, competing against 50 shooters from 13 different countries. The Staughton College student missed out on the junior final by just a few points, returning an overall score of 733 out of a possible 750. His personal score, combined with that of his two teammates’, sealed the gold medal in

the Under 21 division. Thomas said the Ireland experience was one he’d never forget. “It was a really good experience,” he said. “I learnt a lot, especially dealing with all the people who came along to watch, dealing with nerves. “The weather was pretty good too, about the same as back here in winter.” His father was equally chuffed. “It’s pretty amazing at the young age of 16,” John said. Thomas, the youngest member of the junior team, turned 16 just before he left for Ireland, and aims to maintain his eagle eye by competing at club shoots, state carnivals and national competitions. The biggest events on the horizon remain the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and the DTL championships in Wagga Wagga in 2018. Ben Cameron

Melton’s driving force A Melton-based learner driver mentor program has celebrated a huge milestone. The 100th driver graduated from the L2P program run by Djerriwarrh Community and Education Service last month. L2P project officer Kim Leech said 100 graduates were testament to the “huge amount of goodwill” given to Melton and Moorabool young people by local volunteers. “Local businesses, council and police also continue contributing to those in need via support to the L2P program,” Ms Leech said. “It’s a great feeling to be part of this

Drug house busted By Ben Cameron The entire second floor of a Caroline Springs house was used to grow 320 cannabis plants, police say. Police were called to a double-storey property on The Esplanade about 5am last Monday week after reports of three people attempting a “targeted” break-in. Melton Police Detective Senior Constable Shannon Symons said the would-be thieves broke down the front door. “They were inside the house when they [a neighbour] called the police,” he said. The trio had fled by the time police arrived, but they did leave a car behind. Early estimations of 220 plants growing at the property were far short of the final haul. “There’s roughly 120 seedlings, small seedlings, and about another 100 medium to large cannabis plants,” Senior Constable Symons estimated at first. “It’s quite large,” he said. “They were all growing in the upstairs area. The house was very sparsely furnished, just the one bed.” Senior Constable Symons was told by neighbours they’d noticed people coming and going from the property at different times of the day and night. No arrests have been made. In January, a police raid at a Derrimut warehouse uncovered 731 cannabis plants with a street value in the “hundreds of thousands of dollars”. Cannabis offences in Brimbank have more than doubled over the past decade, latest Crime Statistics Agency figures show. Offences jump from 131 cases in 2006 to 308 in 2016, in the year to March 31.

Lunch honours war veterans Australian war veterans will be commemorated at a Caroline Springs luncheon this weekend. The event is being held in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War Battle of Long Tan, one of the best-known battles in Australian history. On August 18, 1966, members of D-Company defeated the Viet Cong even though outnumbered 20 to one. Eighteen Australians were killed – 17 from D-Company and one from the 1st Armoured Personnel Carrier Squadron – and 21 were wounded. Caroline Springs RSL president Peter Burquest said the luncheon was to remember all veterans. The luncheon will run from 11am-4pm on August 14 at The Club, 1312 Western Highway, Caroline Springs. Tickets cost $30 for RSL members and $35 for non-members. There will be a two-course meal, door prizes and drinks. Relay a recipe for good Despite the wintry conditions, Melton Christian College students powered through a “real relay for real people”. The students used food items instead of batons in the relay, raising almost $12,000 for the Combined Churches Caring Melton foodbank. The school’s head of pastoral care department, Bonnie Lang, said the student leadership team wanted to raise funds to help the local community.

“It’s a nice thing to be able to do for awareness … and also for the monetary support,” Ms Lang said. “We had different people at our chapel and school to tell stories of the foodbank … so [students knew] they were helping real people and real lives.” Students presented a cheque to the foodbank last week. What would you change about the area if you could? Nothing. Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Moorabool? Millrose Cottage, the quilt shop and my own home. How long have you owned Millrose Cottage? We own three businesses, which are side by side. The cafe is an 1837 stone cottage which we restored over five years. We opened as a cafe in 2009. The quilt shop was the old masonic lodge, which we restored and reopened in 2012. We’ve also opened a quilting retreat which, again, we’ve restored from its original state.

Where does your love of fabrics and creativity come from? A genuine love of Liberty fabrics from many years ago. What’s your favourite thing to do at the gallery? Sew.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir’s search for the perfect burger goes industrial … Across the new frontiers of the industrial west, there’s a cafe at least every couple of kilometres. And, these days, all but the most rigorously old-school make some efforts to provide a variety of food. Some of it is even healthy – salads and the like. Still, some habits die hard … and there are traditions to uphold. I reckon most of these hundreds of places would cop complaints if the stalwart potato cakes and deep-fried, nuggety-hard dimmies weren’t on hand. Despite all this, I am nevertheless expecting something different from Container Cafe. This place is being run, after all, by the same crew responsible for the very cool Yarraville cafe Woven, which has been turning out fine tucker for a few years now. But, on entering the place for the first time, what do I see? Yup, potato cakes and dimmies. Turns out, in this sort of joint, in this sort of place, some things are just mainstays, as they say. As I look around the “container”, I discover plenty of good signs that this is not just another tradie-style eatery. For one thing, space dictates that there is no bain marie here – so most everything is prepared fresh. In a heated display cabinet on the counter, there are Ka Pies! And alongside the regulation-issue HP Sauce is a range of hot saucy offerings.

My southern fried chicken burger ($11.50) is a killer – maybe even the best chook burger I’ve eaten. The thigh meat is crisp on the outer, and oh-so-very juicy and delicious on the inside. My outstanding burger comes with terrific rough-cut slaw, very good melted cheese and pickles. The Cuban sandwich is another outright winner – superb value for $10, and getting extra points straightaway for being made with the appropriate, Cuban-style bread. The innards are a wonderfully gooey mix of melted gruyere, pickles, pulled pork and ham. From what I’ve seen on two visits, Container Cafe is already a hit with workers passing through. In finer weather, I fully expect to see this place attract a wider crowd from a broader area. Container Cafe is open 5am-3pm Monday-Friday, though that could change, depending on weather and demand. Acting Chief Executive Officer Nigel Jarvis says that the health service’s founders began with a focus on providing close-to-home care and that focus continues to be BDHC’s most important mission. “The importance of high quality, integrated localised care guides our contemporary healthcare service,” Mr Jarvis says. “With the construction of the GP SuperClinic in 2009 and the addition of the Primary Care Centre in 2014, the range of services available to the community is quite extraordinary. “Today, Ballan District Health & Care’s facilities include a rehabilitation gymnasium, a hydrotherapy pool and a GP and allied healthcare clinic in addition to its aged care, hospital and childcare facilities.” BDHC’s team of 176 employees and 85 mostly local volunteers responds to local needs. “Our volunteers supplement and underpin our diverse services, donating their time and skills.

The GP Clinic has female and male GPs, practice nurses and allied healthcare professionals. Physiotherapy, exercise physiology, occupational therapy, podiatry, psychology, dental services (including orthodontistry), a dietitian, community assistance, district and chronic disease nursing, audiology and optometry are all represented – among others. An in-house Xray facility and pathology services are also among the extensive services offered. Mr Jarvis says that, with Ballan’s population on the increase, he expects to host a greater number of visiting specialists in the next five years, expand the residential care facility, offer day procedures in a new facility and double the number of childcare places provided. SPORT Inspired by Mick’s tick By Tara Murray “Jason has the hallmarks of a senior [AFL] player.” Praise such as this, from AFL coaching games record-holder Mick Malthouse, doesn’t come much higher. Malthouse, now on the television show The Recruit, which gives footballers the chance to win an AFL rookie contract, was impressed with what he saw in Sunbury’s Jason Williams during filming. But The Recruit experience ended up being bittersweet for Williams. After winning high praise from Malthouse and former AFL player Ben Dixon, Williams ruptured a ligament in his thumb in the second episode – an injury that had him delisted from the show. “[Being on the show] was one of the best experiences I’ve had,” Williams told Star Weekly. “It opened my eyes to what it takes to get to the elite level, which is my dream and goal in the short term. “The most disappointing thing was knowing I’d done everything to put my best foot forward and was going out of the show for reasons I couldn’t control.” Williams, 22, said that in the past he would have allowed a setback like this to derail him. As a promising young player with the Calder Cannons, Williams was talked about as a possible draft prospect. But, by his own admission, he took it all for granted. After moving to VFL club Port Melbourne and playing in a grand final, Williams says his life started to fall apart and he lost his love for football. He suffered depression and gave the game away. But, since joining Riddell District Football League side Diggers Rest in 2014 he’s rediscovered his passion and says he’s determined the latest setback won’t stop him. “Hearing that sort of feedback [from Malthouse] only added to my determination,” Williams said. “He’s arguably the greatest coach in AFL history and if someone like him has seen these things, I’m not far off where I want to be. “In the past I would have got really worried and got down. It’s about getting out there and enjoying my football.” Williams said Malthouse had been a good mentor on and off the field. He’s still in contact with him and Dixon. It has been an up and down year for Williams on field with Port Melbourne and, lately, Diggers Rest. “I couldn’t do anything and wasted the pre-season because of my injury,” he said. “I’m not satisfied with this year. It’s just been a test for me … When I’m at my best I can play senior VFL footy.” Port Melbourne’s reserves and seniors sides are in the finals mix. Williams is also keen to play a part in trying to help Diggers Rest win a premiership. The Burras, who have lost the past three grand finals, are unbeaten this season..

One point puts Centrals back in finals pack Melton Centrals’ dream of making the grand final in the Victorian Women’s Football League north-west division is on hold for another week. Having gone through the season undefeated, Centrals faced their biggest test on Saturday in the semi-finals against Manor Lakes. Manor Lakes more than matched them. Nothing separated the teams all day, with Centrals straight kicking in front of goal ensuring they led by one point at three-quarter time. The last quarter was similar to that of the earlier three, with nothing giving – and it showed on the scoreboard. The Storm finally managed to hit the front and stay there, winning a onepoint-the-difference thriller, 5.8 (38)-6.1 (37). Jaime Nankiville was the only multiple goal-scorer for the Centrals with two goals. Amanda Masterton was the key for the Storm, kicking four goals. Chelsea Forbes and Kate Saleta tried their hardest to get the Centrals across the line, but it wasn’t enough. The loss isn’t the end for the Centrals, with their stellar form this season earning them a double chance. Last year, they made the grand final through the preliminary final, having lost to the Sunbury Lions in the semi-finals. Centrals will face Shepparton this weekend, after they easily accounted for Jacana in the other semi-final. Thriller sets Melton up for a crack at grand finals The comeback is almost complete for Melton Rugby Union club. After a year in recess to regroup, the club made an immediate impact on its return. This top side has been a force in Victoria Rugby League 2B division, topping the ladder at the end of the regular season on the back of 12 straight wins. On Saturday, they made it 13 wins in a row, and booked a grand final berth, after a 29-24 win over Cerberus. Like us they have been building all season. “It came down to the last play of the day, and we were trying to stop them scoring. I was on the ground and it was pretty nerve-wracking.” Greg Forster, Kawana Kidwell, Alan Onekawa and Junior Afoa were try scorers for Melton. Devlin said it was an incredible feeling to have secured a spot in the grand final, and to see how far they’ve come.

“The boys are pretty ecstatic and excited,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s a shock that we’ve made the grand final, but we didn’t expect to play as well as we have this year. “We knew we would be competitive and wanted to get a side back on the path to play competitive rugby. Winning 13 games in a row, we have good confidence in the side.” Melton will face Ballarat in an all regional side grand final on Saturday at RHL Sparks Reserve in Box Hill. Ballarat is the only team to defeat Melton way back in round three. Ballarat won that

match 31-27. The second time the two played, Melton won 22-3. Like Melton, Ballarat’s match against Melbourne went down to the final play of the match. Nail-biting times as Burras await their finals fate Diggers Rest’s finals fate will again go down to the wire in the Riddell District Netball League. With two rounds left, the Burras are sixth, just one game clear of Lancefield. Both sides will meet a top-six side and a lower-placed side in the lead-up to finals. The Burras are familiar with tight finishes. They finished seventh in 2015 after losing their last two games, while the season before they sneaked into finals with a last-round draw. Burras playing coach Amy Carroll said that, earlier, she would have hoped to have secured a finals spot by now. The Burras have had several close matches in recent times, which could ultimately decide whether they play finals. They won a thriller against Macedon and then lost matches to Melton Centrals and Romsey by a combined four goals. “It will be an interesting few weeks,” Carroll said. The Burras beat Woodend-Hesket 91-48 on Saturday.

Knowing it could come down to percentage, the Burras pressed hard the whole match, scoring 20-plus goals in three of the four quarters. Carroll, returning after dislocating her shoulder against Romsey, scored 55 goals. Tayla Behan also returned after a holiday. Carroll said she expected Jena Baboth to return this week so they would have a full squad for the run home. Bloods fall just short By Tara Murray So close but so far … that was the story for Melton against Bacchus Marsh in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday. The Bloods, who are fighting for a finals spot, were in front late in the game against the second-placed Cobras but could not hold on. Thoroughbreds stumble but still in the hunt For a second straight week, Melton Thoroughbreds have fallen short against Blackburn in Big V men’s division 1 basketball. Only two points separated the sides in the final round of the regular season, so the Thoroughbreds knew they were in for a tough match in the qualifying final. It wasn’t as close this time, but the Thoroughbreds pushed Blackburn all the way, eventually losing 73-67. The Vikings, who are the title favourites, having won 21 games straight, started the game the stronger of the two teams. Leading from the first shot, they led by as much as six points in the opening period. The Vikings hit the last basket of the quarter to lead by three points at quarter-time. Whatever was said to the Thoroughbreds at half-time worked, as they were the stronger team in the opening minutes of the second half. The margin was reduced to three points by midway through the quarter and it looked like the crowd might be in for a thriller. The Vikings responded, though, and were the better side for the rest of the third and pushing the margin back out to eight points. In the last quarter, the Thoroughbreds needed to get on a run to cut the margin, but they could only get as close as three points. In the last half of the quarter, the Vikings did what they needed to, maintaining their lead to win through to the preliminary finals. Returning to the Thoroughbreds, Shane Moroney top scored with 14 points, while fellow big man Cameron McCallum chipped in with 12. Brendan Trewella was the main destroyer for the Vikings, coming off the bench for 27 points. All is not lost for the Thoroughbreds who get a second chance by hosting a semi-final this weekend. shifts, but the ‘4Matic’ system goes through the seven automatic gears so well, it’s just as much fun to put the accelerator down and let the car do the rest. Inside The interior doesn’t hold back either. Lights in the door trims, headrests change colours, the striped, heated front seats are sporty, with firm high backs and cushion extension for longer legs. The back seats are firm but comfortable for two adults, though legroom isn’t in abundance.

Hot hatch is a term that’s used rather liberally these days … most car manufacturers with a hatchback in their line-up have a version with sporty trim and tweaked performance, but few actually stand up to the likes of the benchmark Golf GTi. Mercedes-Benz’s entry into this market, the A250 Sport certainly has the not-so subtle sporty trim. And it has that wicked Mercedes front grill … and it looks fast from every angle. But, as you’d expect from Mercedes, this isn’t just cosmetically enhanced – this is smile-inducing, white-knuckle fun to drive. The acceleration pins you to your seat and, being all-wheel-drive, it takes curves incredibly well, with minimal body roll like a sports car with a much lower centre of gravity. This is a true hot hatch but it knows how to behave appropriately via adjustable performance settings, including Eco, Comfort and Sport, which change the suspension, gearing and steering control. You can either select the default modes or customise your ride using, say, the Sport engine setting with Comfort suspension and steering. There are noticeable differences between the settings. In Sport, the suspension is quite hard and the engine revs at redline before gearing down. Comfort mode does well to appease passengers who might not share the driver’s enthusiasm for G-pulling, bone-jarring performance. Eco mode is good for city driving and fuel economy is enhanced by Autostop. You can drive in manual mode with paddle

to turn right – classic rookie error. The cruise control stalk under the windscreen-wiper/ indicator added to my confusion. This was further compounded by the cruise control and Speedtronic speed limiter sharing the same stalk, which isn’t good when your speed limiter is set to 48km/h and you want to go to cruise control while doing 100km/h. It wasn’t too long before my muscle memory adapted and I really got to enjoy driving. The rear cargo area was pretty small for a hatchback. And there’s no spare tyre, instead you get a little machine that temporarily fixes your flat.

The gauge cluster looks wicked and there’s an 8-inch screen with all the media settings including digital radio, sat-nav and reverse camera display. These are controlled by a dial on the centre console. Speaking of the centre console, one Mercedes trait I had to get used to was the lack of a gear shift. The automatic gear selector is a small stalk on the right side of the steering wheel. Being a European car the turn indicator stalk is on the left with the wiper controls, so for the first day, I was shifting into neutral when trying

It also has automatic park assist, which I don’t usually like using, but I like the simplicity of the Mercedes version, which asks if you want to engage when it senses you’re backing into a spot. Active cruise control, adaptive braking, lane keeping assist, collision prevention assist and electronic stability are some of the many active safety features you’d expect from a Mercedes.
