Footage plea in shooting Residents are being asked to check dash-cam vision to track the movements of a silver SUV sought by police investigating the fatal shooting of a Bacchus Marsh father of five last week. Paul Hogan, 48, was shot in the head while in the driver’s seat of a white van last Tuesday. Thornbury man Daniel Duhovic, 33, and Yu Lo, 26, were arrested last Wednesday and faced Melbourne Magistrates Court the following day charged with his murder. According to a summary released by the court, police allege Lo arranged for Duhovic to murder Mr Hogan, her boyfriend with whom she was living. Duhovic is accused of driving to Mr Hogan’s home with a shotgun and shooting him from just over a metre away. The pair were remanded in custody to appear in court again on October 20. Emergency services were called to Mr Hogan’s Labilliere Street home just before 8.20am last Tuesday after neighbours reported hearing arguing followed by gunshots. A memorial was set up at the Noodle Lovers restaurant in Bacchus Marsh where Mr Hogan worked as a delivery driver. Tributes continue to flow online. “You [were] very much like a father to me,” a colleague wrote. “Someone that was consistently there for me, that cared for me and gave me the most thoughtful and experienced advice, stood by me in the toughest times and always without fail checked up on me. “Today my heart tore and dropped into my stomach … I waited a few minutes in the hope you would respond

to my message and thought to myself that it couldn’t be. It’s impossible. “I’ll forever hold [feelings] of regret and guilt that I had never told you enough … how much I truly appreciated you and thought so highly of you.” Those who knew Mr Hogan asked members of the Bacchus Marsh Residents Facebook page to check their dash-cam footage from last week in case it can help police with their investigations.

Detective Senior Sergeant Steve McIntyre said a silver SUV was seen speeding away from the scene on McCrae Street. “The silver SUV that was seen decamping from the scene was last seen travelling at a fast speed in a southerly direction along McCrae Street,” he said. “Nearby Bacchus Marsh College was locked down for a short time as a precaution. “It’s a disturbing thing for any shooting at this time of day in a residential setting. Voices raised against dingo plan By Sumeyya Ilanbey A Melton environment group fears that introducing dingoes to the Eynesbury forest for pest control will have adverse effects on native wildlife. Earlier this year, Aus Eco Solutions and the Australian Dingo Foundation announced a Working Dingoes Saving Wildlife project, under which it was proposed to reintroduce dingoes to Eynesbury forest as an alternative to poisoning and trapping feral animals. The dingoes would be enclosed in a 10-hectare area surrounded by three-metre-high fences. But Melton Environment Group president

Daryl Akers is concerned the dingoes will eradicate native wildlife, including possums, reptiles and vulnerable ground-nesting birds such as the rare speckled warbler and the diamond firetail. “The dingoes would kill the foxes and rabbits, but they’d also kill other wildlife,” Mr Akers said. “Once upon a time, dingoes would have had massive hunting ranges … but the woodlands remnants in the Melton area are few and far between. “There are endangered animals in these tiny little islands [of forest]. Certainly, there will be more adverse consequences than benefits.” Mr Akers conceded that foxes, rabbits

and cats were a problem in the area, but said targeted pest removal would be much safer and more effective. In March, Mr Akers wrote to Lisa Neville, who was state environment minister at the time, expressing his concerns about the project. Ms Neville responded last month, acknowledging his concerns and assuring him the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning would consider the issues he had raised when assessing a permit application. Australian Dingo Foundation owner Lyn Watson said she was disappointed that Mr Akers had not raised his concerns with her.

She disagreed that introducing dingoes into the Eynesbury forest would eradicate native wildlife. “That forest is badly degraded and our idea is to return wildlife to the forest – not to, in any way, make it worse,” Ms Watson said. “The project is another solution and it’s an innovative solution.” Department environment and natural resources regional manager Merryn Kelly said the department had not yet received an application for the dingo proposal. “In line with our commitment to protect and preserve Victoria’s biodiversity, we assess all permit applications on merit,” she said.

Adele Van Esch is hoping to change the world one oolong tea at a time. The Melton woman will do her part for the Cancer Council when she hosts an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea event this Sunday. It will be Ms Van Esch’s second fundraising event for the Cancer Council, and she hopes to raise at least $1000. “Cancer is one of those things I have a personal connection with. Police are worried about an increasing number of drug-affected drivers on Melton roads. Melton highway patrol officers wrapped up Operation Impacted, targeting roads with a high incidence of road trauma, in the municipality a fortnight ago. The operation started in January. Sergeant Chris Stuhldreier said one of every five drivers tested for drugs during the operation was found to be positive, compared with the state average of one in 15. “[Drug-driving] seems to be on the up, while drink-driving seems to be on the way down,” Sergeant Stuhldreier said. “I think it’s cultural and people are starting to realise the effects of drink-driving.” He said many of the operation’s drug-affected drivers had tested positive for “ice”. “And that’s in line with the general community problem around methamphetamine,” he said. But Operation Impacted had achieved its object to reduce road trauma, Sergeant Stuhldreier said. There was one fatal collision during the months of the operation, down from three in the corresponding period the year before. Serious injury collisions were down from 27 to 15, with “other” injury collisions down from 55 to 43. Another police mission, Operation Trojan, ran from February and wrapped up yesterday. Focused on the Western and Melton highways, it targeted mobile phone use and seatbelt offences. Police detected 243 offences.

CFA slammed over Fiskville By Sumeyya Ilanbey Some senior CFA officials knew the Fiskville training site was contaminated but still continued to send staff to train there, a Victorian parliamentary inquiry has found. The inquiry was highly critical of the CFA and a number of government agencies for failing to meet standards of professionalism expected of them. Among the 125 findings and 31 recommendations, WorkSafe was described as being “anything but proactive”; the Victorian government solicitor’s office was said to be “obstructive and unco-operative”; and EPA Victoria “failed” to carry out its statutory role. The report also stated the then Department of Environment and Primary Industries “should not have allowed the CFA to be so closely involved in its statutory decision making”; the state’s chief health officer “should have accessed specialist technical advice … independent of the CFA”; and Moorabool council was criticised for leaving a farmer to resolve his nuisance complaint directly with the CFA because of the power imbalance between the parties. The inquiry, chaired by Thomastown MP Bronwyn Halfpenny, handed down its damning final report last Tuesday, which recommended prioritising the purchase of a new training centre near Ballan and offering a redress scheme for people affected by the chemicals scandal. The controversial training site was closed last year after chemical residues were found in water tanks used for firefighter training. It has

also been linked to a cancer cluster. “Did CFA management and board members know that practices at Fiskville were unsafe or contravened standards of safety regulations? The answer is yes, some did,” Ms Halfpenny said. The inquiry’s report found outside organisations training at Fiskville made decisions based on inaccurate information provided by the CFA, which may have led to people being exposed to contaminated water.

“The end result is that the [inquiry]committee can reveal how the Victorian community has been let down by the CFA as well as the regulators empowered to oversee that CFA, such as WorkSafe and EPA Victoria.” CFA chief executive Lucinda Nolan last week apologised to members and the community. “While we cannot change what happened in the past, we have learnt from these past mistakes,” Ms Nolan said in a statement. Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett said the state government would “carefully” consider the report’s findings, with $46 million set aside in its budget for a new training centre in the Central Highlands area and upgrades to the CFA’s Huntly training centre.

John Finn started his teaching career almost five decades ago at a tiny rural Victorian primary school. There were nine pupils, aged five to 12, one classroom and one teacher: Mr Finn. A year later, he left for greener pastures. These days, he’s a sports teacher at Exford Primary School. Mr Finn has been recognised by the Education Department with a ‘recognition of service’ award for his 47-year commitment to the profession. “We don’t do it for the recognition, but getting some recognition is good,” Mr Finn said. “If you recognise what adults and children are doing, you get better results from them.” But he said communication and “recognising” pupils in some of the worst Victorian schools

hadn’t come without its challenges – and successes. “The highlight of my career has been, I think, having the confidence and ability to step into any situation and deal with it in a friendly and co-operative manner and get … positive outcomes. “Something I learned fairly early on is that the more you put into the children and the more interest you can demonstrate in them as a person, not purely as a student, the better things work out for everybody. ‘Titanic’ jibe at Finn’s solution

Caroline Springs residents are demanding action from Victoria Police and the state government to end violence and vandalism in their suburb, with hundreds of people on social media lending their voices to the cause. Social media users have flooded the Caroline Springs Residents Facebook page with comments, calling on Victoria Police, Premier Daniel Andrews and Melton council to find solutions. “The constant feedback from the community to this page resounds of the frustrations of residents who don’t feel that the police have the resources or funding to prevent the minority, who are making the community of thousands feel unsafe and are being physically harmed,” a post by the Facebook page’s administrator says. The post follows Star Weekly’s Cops in Crisis special investigation into police resourcing issues in Melton and Caroline Springs and a “steep increase” in messages to the Facebook page about vandalism and violence. Residents have vented their frustrations on Facebook, demanding to know “how severe” the crimes need to be before police resourcing in Caroline Springs was “prioritised”. “How many more attacks, and how severe do they need to get, before it becomes one of the priorities on your list,” Leila commented. “We no longer feel safe in our homes and even more so outside it. We all demand action as taxpayers, ratepayers [and] law-abiding citizens of the community.” Others, such as Sally, questioned the safety of the area compared with 10 years ago.

like they used to … something needs to be done.” Victoria Police spokeswoman Sara-Jane Delaney said Caroline Springs police had reached out to the creator of the Caroline Springs Residents Facebook page to talk about safety concerns in the area.

Diggers Rest should be served by Sunbury police to drastically improve response times, according to Western Metropolitan Region MP Bernie Finn. But the Police Association has likened the suggestion to “moving the deck chairs on the Titanic”. Mr Finn raised the issue in State Parliament last week after being asked by Diggers Rest residents to raise with the Police Minister their concerns about police response times. The area is currently serviced by Melton and Caroline Springs police. “New estates [in Diggers Rest] are blooming and houses are going up on a daily basis,” Mr Finn said. “New residents expect police to respond quickly to their requests for help. At the moment, Diggers Rest, while only five minutes from Sunbury, must depend on policing services from Caroline Springs, which in the middle of the night is about 15 to 20 minutes away. In peak hour, it can be anything up to two hours.” Police Association secretary Ron Iddles said that although Diggers Rest was geographically closer to Sunbury, distance was only one factor to consider. “Without providing additional police in the area, moving the Diggers Rest community into the Sunbury police response zone would be like moving the deck chairs on the Titanic. Our members at Melton and Sunbury are stretched to the limit.” The state government was contacted for comment.

Orange is the color . . . Pentland Primary School pupils wore orange last week in support of one of their classmates. Eight-year-old Savannah was born with the rare genetic disorder Prader Willi syndrome, which affects development and growth as well as causing an excessive appetite which can lead to obesity. Acting assistant principal Sue Collinson said pupils wore bright orange T-shirts and took part in activities, arts and crafts to raise awareness of the syndrome. They also made donations to raise money for Prader Willi research.

Heads-up on housing By Esther Lauaki Moorabool council is ready to tackle population growth and the demand for housing at Bacchus Marsh. The council last week released its draft Bacchus Marsh Housing Strategy, which recommends an action plan to tackle demand for new housing and infill developments in the face of an expected doubling of the population over the next 25 years. The draft strategy, Housing Bacchus Marsh to 2041, has been advertised for public feedback

until the end of June. It recommends upgrading the residential zones used in the Bacchus Marsh planning scheme. These zones should “identify where growth should and should not be facilitated, and link housing decisions with issues such as accessibility to services”, a report tabled at the council’s May 25 meeting stated. Cr Tonia Dudzik said the new strategy and subsequent action plan would place council and developers on the same page when it comes to planning and urban growth. “The strategy means we can place tighter controls

on planning in Bacchus Marsh … and identify different areas which all have very distinct characteristics.” She said it was an important step forward for residents wanting to challenge development in their neighbourhoods. Housing Bacchus Marsh to 2041 is one of six studies that will inform preparation of the urban growth strategy. Council has recently completed retail, economic development, transport and industrial strategies for Bacchus Marsh, and a community infrastructure strategy is also due. Over two Tuesdays, six men repainted a pirate ship and cubby house at Darley Neighbourhood House. They added the final touches last week. Ram and man sleep rough Godwin Aquilina is so determined to keep his ram Jackie Chan that the pair are sleeping rough in Melbourne. They left their home in Maddingley when Moorabool council gave Mr Aquilina a deadline of midnight on May 22 to find a new home for Jackie Chan, or the ram would be seized. The deadline was later extended to last Friday. Mr Aquilina is no longer permitted to keep the ram at his Love Close property after nearly a decade of complaints from neighbours about the animal charging at residents. He’s been living with Jackie Chan for the past fortnight under a Flinders Street railway bridge, embarking on daily strolls through the city. “It’s freezing out here,” he told Star Weekly last Friday. Nobody is listening to me, so I’m not going home.” Mr Aquilina says his attempts to register Jackie Chan as an assistance animal have come to a “standstill”. RSPCA Victoria chief executive officer Liz Walker said they were concerned about the welfare of the sheep. “We would be happy to work with the City of Melbourne and the owner to ensure that the sheep can be housed in a more appropriate environment, at least temporarily,” she said. Cafferkey killer ‘played’ system By Adam Cooper, The Age A Victorian coroner has called for serious violent offenders to be monitored out of jail the same way serious sex offenders are, after finding Steven Hunter “played” the parole system before he murdered Sarah Cafferkey. Judge Ian Gray on Wednesday found Hunter knew the answers that his parole officer and clinical psychologist wanted, when in reality he had limited insight into his offending, had previously lied to authorities when on parole, had returned to drugs, and harboured signs of aggression and hostility, particularly to women. Hunter was convicted of the murder of teenager Jacqueline Matthews in 1986 and had completed a jail term for assaulting a man when granted parole in 2011. On November 10, 2012 – 11 days after completing his parole term – he attacked and killed Ms Cafferkey in his Bacchus Marsh unit. The 22-year-old’s body was found in a wheelie bin at a Point Cook home nine days later. Hunter is serving a jail term of life without parole. The inquest into Ms Cafferkey’s death, held last year, heard Hunter was initially considered at low risk of re-offending when granted parole, but that was reassessed to moderate. But, the Coroners Court heard, Hunter was not compelled to undergo drug and alcohol counselling or testing when on parole and began mixing with “negative” associates. He was using the drug ice and attacked Ms Cafferkey after they had drunk alcohol and used drugs together.

The coroner found it “unacceptable” that Ms Johnstone did not know Hunter’s parole conditions, though he acknowledged her heavy caseload and the effect of Ms Cafferkey’s death on both her and Dr Doric. Judge Gray also found some of the parole board’s dealings with Hunter notable for their “brevity and superficiality”. The inadequacies of Victoria’s parole system had since largely been addressed, the court heard, following the implementations recommended by the Callinan review, which began after Adrian Bayley murdered Jill Meagher in 2012 while on parole. Ms Cafferkey’s mother, Noelle Dickson, said it was “devastating” to hear her daughter’s murder might not have happened in a better system. “For me and all these victims who have suffered terribly through these flaws and faults … we’re never going to get our loved ones back,” Ms Dickson said outside court.

money you derived directly from the occupiers of the properties or the organisers of the schemes from their cultivation and sale of a commercial quantity of cannabis – not from tax evasion. “This figure has been established from an examination of legitimate income, essentially derived by you from your operation of a butcher shop at the Footscray market during the offending period.” Nguyen was jailed for a year, with six months suspended, while Do received a nine-month suspended jail term.

What’s your connection with Moorabool? I’ve owned my business in Bacchus Marsh for more than 10 years. I live in Hillside but I love Bacchus Marsh. How long have you lived in Australia? I’ve lived in Australia for 46 years. I came from Cyprus by myself in 1969 because my uncle lived here and he helped me to come to Australia. Can you tell me about your family and what it was like settling into a new country?

I went back home in 1976 and I met my wife in Cyprus. It was an arranged marriage and we’ve been married for 39 years now. We came back together to Australia and we have three boys and two grandchildren. My wife and I run the business. I was very happy to be here. We have met many people from back home here in Hillside, Melton, Footscray. We feel like this is our home now. What made you open a drycleaning business in Bacchus Marsh? When I came here to Bacchus Marsh, I visited this shop and I fell in love. I first worked in this shop more than 10 years ago and I loved it so much. This is not my business anymore – it has become my hobby. That’s how much I enjoy what I do. I will be here until I can’t work anymore.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir will go to the ends of the earth for a good feed … Jade Stream is tucked away at the railway station end of the cluttered, unlovely part of town still referred to as the Golden Mile. What are we expecting, or hoping for? Just some smart, tasty Cantonese food – nothing innovative or challenging, but something satisfying and of good quality. And that’s pretty much exactly what we get. I’m guessing Jade Stream has been in place for a couple of decades – inside has an air of timelessness and a vibe that speaks of a business that knows what it’s about and has a good handle on its customers. While we’re enjoying our dinner, a handful of tables of various numbers come and go – and all of them appear to be regulars on friendly terms with the staff. We like that. We find the service to be very good. Jade Stream lays some claim to being Chinese-Malaysian, but mostly this is a straight-up Chinese joint. Curry puffs ($5.50) are chubby cylinders and seem rather small. But the fillings are very good – mostly a rich mix of minced meat with some crunch ‘n’ pop from peas. Short soup ($6) has a very good and flavoursome broth with a bit of a peppery kick. There are five slithery, delicious wontons – Bennie’s glinty-eyed enthusiasm wins him three, his dad gets two. Garlic pepper steak ($25.90) also appears of modest proportions, but in this case

There’s nothing particularly garlicky about the sauce, but it is nonetheless rich and wonderful. The beef cubes are big, of high quality and superbly cooked. And we appreciate the many chunks of broccoli. Szechuan eggplant hot pot is a big hit with us and an outright bargain. The smaller diced pieces of eggplant, along side peas, pork mince and chilli, are interspersed with silky, larger eggplant chunks of beaut flavour. At $18.90, and with rice, it could easily serve as a light meal for two. So big is the serve that we eat a little more than half, with the rest and the leftover rice coming home with us for Bennie’s school lunch the next day. With two serves of rice, but no soft drinks, our dinner has cost us a fair $61.30.

SPORT Williams boots Burras to big win A best-on-ground performance from Jason Williams lifted Diggers Rest to a powerful win over Melton Centrals in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. Williams booted six goals in a dominant display inside the forward 50-metre arc as the Burras ran away 20.15 (135)-10.8 (68). Both teams took time to find their range in wet and windy conditions at Bloomdale Oval. After a scrappy opening term, Diggers Rest clicked into gear first, booting five second -quarter goals to take a 22-point lead into the half-time break. Once the Burras had the momentum, they showed no interest in giving it back. Diggers Rest continued to dominate in the second half, adding five goals in the third term and eight in the last.

While Rex Hickman and Matt Gilmore provided strong targets up forward for Centrals, Melton was unable to find other avenues to goal. It was the opposite case for the Burras, who had nine goalkickers in the win. Williams was well supported inside 50 by Brent Tuckey, who finished with four goals, while Joseph Piccolo kicked three. Around the ground, Joshua Wallace and Cole Laurie were also impressive for the winners. Saturday’s victory maintains Diggers Rest’s perfect start to the season. The Burras are on top of the ladder after six rounds, level with Macedon. They will take on eighth-placed Woodend-Hesket this week. Tenth-placed Centrals will have the ideal

Late goal gets Jets home By Liam Twomey Western Jets saw off a fast-finishing Calder Cannons to secure a vital win in the TAC Cup competition at the weekend. After leading by as many as 22 points at one stage, the Jets were forced to call on all their fighting spirit to hold on, 8.7 (55)7.11 (53). The Jets looked at home in the wet and windy conditions at Williamstown’s Burbank Oval, regularly pushing the ball inside 50 and making the most of their chances. It was the opposite for Calder, which managed just three goals before three- quarter time before finding their range in the final term. Calder started the quarter on fire, kicking three goals in three minutes to cut the deficit to single figures. Another goal to the visitors put the Jets behind for the first time in the match and it looked as though the Cannons were primed for an unlikely win. But Western’s Brandon Lester had other ideas, putting his side back in front with the sealing goal late in the match. Jets coach Torin Baker was rapt with the fight his players showed when the pressure was at its toughest. “I was really pleased with the way we attacked the game,” he said. “They hit the front in the last quarter and had the momentum. For us to kick an important goal and then be able to hold out for the last eight minutes was a testament to the group and how we want to play.” In the tough conditions for goalkickers, Tristan Xerri was a clear standout for the Jets. Cobras draw first, and last, blood Bacchus Marsh has taken another step forward in its hunt for a Ballarat Football League finals berth. The Cobras secured a vital victory over Melton at the weekend, winning 13.11 (89)-10.5 (65) at MacPherson Park. The two sides were second and third on the ladder going into the match and the higher-ranked Cobras settled into the contest first. Bacchus Marsh booted three first-quarter goals to take a 15-point lead into the opening break. But the momentum was short-lived as the Bloods produced a spirited fightback in front of their fans. After kicking just one major in the first term, Melton booted five to two in the second to go into the main break three points ahead. Bacchus Marsh needed a lift and it came through Tyson Shea, Daniel Burton and Matt Denham, who were winning a number of important contests around the ground to get them back on track. The Cobras soon regained the lead at the resumption of play before three goals to one in the final term sealed the win. Up forward, Damian Cupido finished with three goals for Bacchus Marsh, while Shea kicked two. After seven rounds, Bacchus Marsh is second on the BFL ladder with a 5-1 record, one game behind Lake Wendouree. On the back of the loss, Melton drops to fourth. Teen champ aims high By Liam Twomey Don’t let his age fool you … Cesur Afacan packs an almighty punch. The 13-year-old is a rising star of the Australian boxing scene, and his wins and title collection continue to stack up. After claiming his first Victorian title last year, Afacan has now lifted his game to another level. The Creekside College student travelled to Queensland earlier this month to compete in the Australian championships. Afacan left the event with a perfect 2-0 record and an Australian title under his belt. Both Afacan’s wins came via eight-count technical knockouts (TKOs) in the under 46-kilogram division. “The first fight, I knew he was going to be a stronger fighter because he was shorter. I just tried to keep my distance with him,” Afacan said. “On the second one, I was really happy with how I went as well. “To be able to win, it was very overwhelming. It was the best feeling.” While some in the sport may consider him young, Afacan has experience well beyond his years. He first stepped into a ring when he was four. Now the teenager is training twice a day, six days a week. “I liked the discipline about it, the training … it takes a lot of time to be good at it, but it is all worth it,” he said. “I do a lot of skipping, shadow boxing and a lot of hard work.” Afacan has no plans to slow down and is already focusing on his next major tournament. He is aiming to compete in the junior World Championships in Russia later this year.

Burnside Heights is still searching for its first win of the Essendon District Football League division 2 season after going down to East Sunbury on Saturday. The Bears produced one of their most competitive performances of the season before losing 17.13 (115)-6.4 (40). Things aren’t about to get any easier for the Bears, who will meet top-of-the-table Moonee Valley this week. Moonee Valley will be out to rebound after suffering an upset loss against Keilor Park on Saturday. In other results from the weekend, Roxburgh Park got the better of Coburg Districts by 19 points.

Netball

Melton Centrals secured a vital win in the Riddell District Netball League at the weekend. Centrals proved too good for Diggers Rest, winning 51-42. Melton didn’t have things all its own way though and were forced to fight during a tough first half. Holding a three-goal lead at the main break, Centrals went to another gear, scoring 27 second-half goals to seal the win. Vanessa Seddon led the way for Melton, scoring a match-high 36, while Rebecca Morabito finished with 15. In other results from the weekend, Macedon smashed Wallan, Riddell got the better of Woodend-Hesket and Rupertswood was too good for Romsey. MOTOR Mazda 2 makes big impression By David Bonnici

console – one of my first-world pet hates is when a car has push-button start but nowhere convenient to leave your keys while you drive. There’s a couple of cup holders and a small pocket in front of the gear stick as well as the usual door pockets and glovebox.

Little cars with a boot aren’t normally as popular as the hatch versions but I reckon Mazda is on a winner with the Mazda 2 sedan. For a start, it looks good. The boot doesn’t look like an afterthought and it has more than a passing resemblance to it’s graceful Mazda 3 and 6 siblings. Its form is matched by function with a huge (for its class) 440-litre cargo area hidden under a small boot lid considerably bigger than the 250-litre cargo area at the back of the hatch.

Inside This feels pretty roomy for a compact car. The front seats are comfortable. Legroom is at a premium in the back but there’s plenty of arm and headroom for two adults. As you’d expect from Mazda, the interior is well put together. The interior designs of many small cars go too far in trying to appeal to younger drivers but this has a nice general appeal to it. For the driver, the Mazda 2 Maxx has extras such as the seven-inch touch screen that sits on the dash in place of the standard entertainment unit with buttons in the base-model Neo. The main gauge cluster in front of the steering wheel looks good, though the LCD displays on either side of the speedometer that show the tacho, fuel contents and trip computer info can be difficult to see on a bright day. The entertainment system syncs quickly to your phone or device via Bluetooth, the reversing camera is clear and the in-built

Driving For this rev head, compact cars aren’t usually the most exciting to test drive but I quite enjoyed driving the Mazda 2. It goes well, has nimble steering but doesn’t feel as floaty as some small cars. It even has a throaty, sports-car-like exhaust note. The 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, SKYACTIV-Drive petrol engine is more than enough and is quiet economical despite revving well beyond 2000rpm at 100km/h in sixth gear. The manual version I drove was zippy. The gear shifting felt a little loose and it was a little too easy to accidentally slip into reverse gear – not much fun at traffic lights. It has i-stop which stops the car when idling. I don’t usually like this feature but I must admit that when I first picked it up, I didn’t realise it was even engaged as the engine is so quiet. The engine starts instantaneously when you lift your foot off the brake. Safety features include hill-start assist and Smart City Brake Support, which senses a potential collision and primes the brakes so the car stops quicker when you stomp on the pedal. If you’re too slow, it will stop automatically to reduce the impact. Mazda 2 pricing starts at $16,990 drive-away for the Neo and $19,690 for the Maxx.

satnav works fine. The touch screen can be hard to reach while driving so there’s a little control knob on the centre console that’s easy enough to use. It does take a while to input your destination into the satnav. There are buttons on the steering wheel to

control volume and select songs, radio stations and entertainment mode, as well as phone, trip computer and cruise control. The air-conditioner is how I like it – nice and simple – and it’s pretty powerful for a little car. There isn’t too much storage in the centre
