Hospital ‘at risk’ for years By Sumeyya Ilanbey

Red flags were being raised for years about systemic failures of process and practice at Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital, an AuditorGeneral’s report has found. Senior clinicians queried the hospital’s ability to manage its maternity services, while an internal report years before any investigation was launched found the hospital’s obstetric service was an “extreme risk”. Hunt on for new CFA land By Sumeyya Ilanbey The state government may need to compulsorily acquire land at Ballan for a new Country Fire Authority training centre site. The hunt has been on for several months to find a new training site after Fiskville was shut down due to high levels of toxins found in local water. Moorabool mayor Allan Comrie says the town is desperate for a new location to be found soon. Cr Comrie welcomed news all options were being explored in a bid to secure land for a new training centre in the region. He said he doubted many people would be affected if land had to be compulsorily acquired. “We’re very, very happy,” Cr Comrie said. “The property owners of the properties would
be happy because the state government [could] be willing to pay above what the real estate prices are.” A new training facility is vital to keep the town vibrant and the people employed, with small businesses suffering losses since the closure of Fiskville, Cr Comrie said. The state government has allocated $300,000 in its current budget to secure land for a new training site. Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett has said the state government is committed to finding somewhere at Ballan. For several months the minister has said the government is close to securing a deal. But, so far, no land purchase has been made. When Star Weekly made enquiries last week, a government spokeswoman said it is working with the CFA and the Moorabool council to

identify land for a new “hot fire training facility in the Ballan area”. “We are hopeful of securing a new site as quickly as possible,” the spokeswoman said. “The land must meet specific criteria, and we want to make sure we get it right. “All options are on the table,” she said. Western Victoria Region MLC Joshua Morris earlier this month slammed the state government in parliament for leaving Ballan “in the dark, waiting for the government to get its act together” about the future CFA training centre. The state government spokeswoman would not be drawn on how many properties may be needed for the new centre. Moorabool Environment Group members are celebrating a partial victory after the state government announced the ‘suspension’ of an exploration licence for a local coal project. The group, in conjunction with The Greens, pressured Energy and Resources Minister Lily D’Ambrosio over recent months to cancel the exploration licence of Mantle Mining and Exergen for the 154 square kilometre Bacchus Marsh Coal project. Mantle Mining coal exploration manager Mark Maxwell told Star Weekly earlier this month he would be “surprised” if the minister decided not to renew its exploration licence. But last Wednesday, a day after the licence expired, Ms D’Ambrosio announced a decision on its renewal would be deferred until the government’s coal policy was developed. The exploration licence will now be held in abeyance by the state government, and MEG president Ben Courtice said the group hoped the licence would eventually be cancelled. “It’s definitely been a win,” Mr Courtice said. “But we’d like to eventually see it completely cancelled. “Our general understanding is that mineral exploration licences are fairly easy to get and be renewed. So to not renew a licence is a change from the normal procedure.” But the Greens’ energy spokeswoman Ellen Sandell slammed the state government for stalling a decision. “This is a failure of leadership,” Ms Sandell said. “The government could have removed the threat of coal exploration, but chose to keep the dirty fossil fuel dream alive. “Putting off the decision for another six months just means more uncertainty for the community and farmers.” Ms D’Ambrosio said she decided to postpone the decision because a decision “would be unfair to both the company and local community” while the coal programs review and the development of a new government coal policy were underway. Call for free fares for students By Esther Lauaki Low-income school students from Melton could be cut some slack as the state government considers overhauling public transport fares. Public transport minister Jacinta Allan announced a shake-up of fines in response to a report, launched on March 22, which urged the government to reform the fines it hands out to young people. “Current concession fares significantly reduce the cost of travelling for students, but we recognise that, for the most disadvantaged,
even a small fare can have a big impact,” Ms Allan said. “We are currently reviewing the ticketing enforcement regime to ensure it is fair for all, particularly for those kids who have the least and need public transport the most.” Melton’s students, aged between 10 and 19, represent nearly 14 per cent of the local population which also has the highest youth unemployment in the state. The new report, Fare Go: Myki, transport poverty and access to education in Melbourne’s west, was a joint venture by Victoria University and the WEstjustice Sunshine Youth office.
It calls on the government to give children whose families are on Centrelink free public transport. It also calls for student cards to be proof of entitlement to a concession ticket and wants the fines system for people aged under 18 to be abolished. The report indicates that in disadvantaged suburbs, particularly in the west, Myki fares compete with a kid’s ability to buy breakfast or school books. “Given that the focus for young people in secondary school is their education, the government’s policy means that many young
people do not have a source of income outside the home. Young people are very unlikely to have their own funds to pay the fines.” There were 7000 warrants issued to young Victorians for not paying fines during 2014-15. “If you go to a free public school and have to use public transport to get there, it will cost you $7500 over your 12 years of school just to get to and from school,” high-profile barrister Julian Burnside said last week. “Many families can’t afford the initial payment for Myki.” – with The Age
Aussies rally to help Fiji Melton’s Fijian community has raised $3000 to help friends and families affected by cyclone Winston. The category five cyclone ravaged the islands on February 20, wiping out nearly all homes on Koro island. The Melton-based Fijian Community Association of Victoria held a fundraising event this month attended by more than a hundred residents as well as a former Fiji minister. Association president Vonivate Driu said the devastation caused by the cyclone was far reaching. “Just about all Fijians have friends or relatives who have been seriously affected,” he said. “One of my best friends is from Malake island … and he lost everything – just about all homes were destroyed or badly damaged. “It will be a very long road ahead for the people of Fiji – it will take many years for communities to recover.”
Australian Red Cross chief executive Judy Slatyer thanked the thousands of Australians who contributed to the Fiji appeal. “Many donors have told us moving stories, confirming the strong connection between Australians and Fijians,” she said. “These are very tough times for the people of Fiji, with tens of thousands still living in evacuation centres or needing help with shelter. “Many have lost their homes and everything they own.” Ms Slatyer said health remains a priority, with thousands of people lacking sufficient clean water and access to sanitation facilities. “We’re getting aid supplies to communities across Fiji, including tarpaulins, tool kits, water containers and technical support, to help people rebuild with safer, more disaster-proof houses.” Esther Lauaki

Cash bid to wipe graffiti By Esther Lauaki Councils can now apply for funding in a bid to wipe out graffiti. The Victorian government grants program, launched on March 15, provides up to $25,000 for graffiti prevention projects across the state. The funding announcement coincided with the most recent vandalism of Caroline Springs playgrounds in Edgbaston Parade and St Georges Avenue reserves, which are frequently targeted by taggers. A graffiti response team, established by Melton council in July last year, aims to clean up the problem as soon as possible. Operations manager Leslie Stokes said the council-funded response team had made a significant difference in the area. “The service has been seen as very positive and the community is seeing the difference and making comment on the changes,” he said. “The graffiti response team is also removing graffiti from assets that are not council-owned and this has been a major change since the introduction of the team. “Council is working diligently to remove graffiti soon after it appears in an effort to reduce the likelihood of it reappearing. “Graffiti is often random in its occurrence, but there are areas where graffiti is monitored, regularly. These locations often change.” Mr Stokes said the council would review the graffiti prevention grant this year and consider expanding the service with other possible projects that could be funded through government funding. Grants can go towards anti-graffiti art projects, a graffiti removal trailer to help community groups remove tags, and monthly clean-up days or education programs in

partnership with Victoria Police. Parliamentary Secretary for Justice Ben Carroll urged local councils across the state looking for ways to combat graffiti to apply. “The graffiti prevention grants encourage
local councils to work with their communities and grassroots organisations to harness local solutions to the problem of graffiti,” he said. Applications close at 4pm, April 29. They can be submitted online at www.crimeprevention. vic.gov.au/graffitigrants

‘Punish them’ call on petrol Police are being called upon to act promptly on fuel thefts and to treat the crime more seriously. Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce executive director Geoff Gwilym believes motorists and retailers will continue to be hit by fuel thefts even if the recommendations for a government response to petrol drive-offs are adopted. “Potential fuel thieves need to know that stealing fuel is a crime punishable by law, and that if they commit fuel theft, they stand a good chance of being caught – that’s the answer,” Mr Gwilym said. Caroline Springs is a trouble spot for fuel drive-offs in Melton, while the latest in Moorabool was on March 1 at a Bacchus Marsh service station. The Victorian law reform, road and community safety committee inquiry into fuel drive-offs proposed eight solutions, but Mr Gwilym believes few go to the heart of the issue. Mr Gwilym agrees with some recommendations, including giving servos access to VicRoads’ stolen vehicle and number plate data. He also supports a Victoria Police consumer and industry guide. But these alone would not significantly cut fuel thefts in Victoria, he said. “Implementing pre-pay systems at service stations … will not solve this issue for the many small business owners who are regular victims of this crime,” he said. Brendan Bennett commenced legal proceedings in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) against the Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES), seeking a review of a suspension imposed by VICSES management following an alleged preliminary investigation into work health and safety practices and potential disciplinary matters at the Bacchus Marsh VICSES Unit. VICSES sought judgment on jurisdictional grounds stating that since it made no decision which was reviewable by VCAT, VCAT did not have the jurisdiction to hear the matter. The proceeding was dismissed on 8 September 2015 on the basis that no reviewable decision had been made. On 29 September 2015, the Melton Moorabool Star Weekly published an article in print and online concerning the VCAT proceeding. The article contained a statement that the alleged preliminary investigation held at the Bacchus Marsh Unit was in relation to the behaviour of Mr Bennett and that Mr Bennett did not dispute the findings of the alleged investigation. Those statements were incorrect and the Melton Moorabool Star Weekly hereby retracts them. The Melton Moorabool Star Weekly acknowledges that no “preliminary findings” as reported in the Publication were in fact made against Mr Bennett and that such “preliminary findings” have no application to him. Council asks to buck rates cap By Esther Lauaki Moorabool council wants to raise rates above the state government-imposed cap, and to put up its fees and charges, as it juggles to balance its books. At a special meeting on March 23, councillors voted to ask the Essential Services Commission to lift rates by 3.5 per cent after a month-long public consultation on rating options. This rate rise is one percentage point higher than the consumer price index limit [CPI] of 2.5 per cent introduced after a state government review of council rates. During consultation, Moorabool residents were asked to consider three options – a 2.5 per cent rate rise cap, a 4.15 per cent rate rise cap or 3.5 per cent cap plus increases in user pays fees and charges. Councillors Pat Toohey, David Edwards, Tom Sullivan and Tonia Dudzik backed the cap at one per cent above the CPI. Cr Sullivan said this increase would ensure services and infrastructure could be maintained and improved over the long term. “I see this as a suitable transition arrangement,” he said. “Moorabool council is like a train moving forward and suddenly the brakes have been put on, if we accept the rates cap at CPI.” Bacchus Marsh resident Russ Hendry, one of two public speakers, objected to a rates increase above the state-imposed cap. “I was offended by the choices I was presented,” he said. “I feel that council has been brainwashed into believing that council cannot
function. I believe there are other income streams that can be explored, and cuts that can be made within council spending.” Mr Hendry produced his own survey of more than 1000 residents, in which more than half of respondents supported the rates cap. Councillors Paul Tatchell and John Spain supported the state-nominated cap. Cr Tatchell wanted to keep rates the same and increase fees

and charges. “We can’t keep leaning on ratepayers for everything that we need done,” he said. “It’s unfair that we keep shifting the weight around like this.” Chief executive Rob Croxford said the cap on rate rises would impact more than 100 services and the $16 million capital works program. “It is increasingly difficult to balance service delivery in growing communities and to meet the growing gap of need and actual spending on infrastructure such as sealed and unsealed roads and footpaths,” he said. “We will have to look at cutting services … projects and capital works spending will be severely impacted. “Combined with federal assistance grants being frozen … rate capping could add a lot more pain in how we can provide for our community.” Details: www.moorabool.vic.gov.au

Climate fear for farms A sixth-generation Ingliston farmer fears Australia’s agricultural industry is under threat from greenhouse gases and global warming. John Lakey’s concerns follow a Climate Council report, which says climate change has serious consequences for Australia’s farming practices, and subsequently consumers. Mr Lakey says his cattle farm is “absolutely feeling” the impacts of hotter weather and lower rainfalls, with dams empty for three years. “With the hot weather, we get much higher evaporation, and tied with that is lower rainfall,” he says. “It’s a double whammy – it means there’s no water in the dams and no growth in pasture.
“A farmer doesn’t function without both of these,” he said, adding that it’s fourth, fifth, or sixth generation farmers who carry the “bigger burden”, as farming is increasingly unviable. “Do you want to be the person who lets the farm go after so many years?” he says. The Climate Council has called on the federal and state governments to “rapidly” scale up renewable energy, otherwise risk Australia’s farming future. By Sumeyya Ilanbey Five Melton workers have lost their jobs after training giant Evocca College announced 17 campus closures across the country. The news came as a blow to staff and students, who had been told of the imminent closure of smaller campuses, including those at Melton, Epping, Preston, Ringwood, Sunshine and Werribee, in Victoria. More than a quarter of the college’s workforce – 220 people out of 770 nationally – has been made redundant. A college spokeswoman said there were 40 students enrolled at the Melton campus, which only opened last year. Management briefed affected staff on Thursday, offering employee assistance programs and outplacement services as part of separation packages. Evocca College chief executive Craig White said the decision to close was made after changes to the VET fee-help legislation earlier this year. While the decision to “restructure” Evocca College was “difficult”, Mr White said it was necessary. He said the January 1 reforms had a “large” impact on the entire skills education sector. “Fewer students will now be able to qualify to enter diploma-level courses at all training organisations under new rules, including more stringent language, literacy and numeracy testing requirements,” he said. “In addition, VET fee-help has been capped to 2015 levels, restricting the growth of all providers, both

The closest campus to Melton will be at Broadmeadows – about 40 kilometres away. “We are liaising with the small group of affected students, and are focused on a seamless transition to the new delivery,” Mr White said. Evocca is the latest training provider to pull the pin on the outer west, while Victoria University has all but closed down its Melton campus, with no classes offered. Melton council economic development and advocacy manager Michael Tudball said council is concerned about Evocca’s closure. “Tertiary education … to gain qualifications and lift the level of education within the city, is vital,” Mr Tudball said. “Council continues to advocate to state and federal governments …to ensure that our community has equal access to those facilities and services required.”

Mayor’s Message Cr Kathy Majdlik One of the most important jobs myself and Council staff undertake is to advocate for services for our City to the state and federal governments. We all know that the City of Melton is one of the fastest growing areas in Australia, a situation which often means our population growth outstrips the availability of infrastructure. So I’m pleased that we were well represented in a recent delegation to Canberra, that was organised by LeadWest, a regional advocacy organisation focused on Melbourne’s west. The delegation discussed the issues of public transport, access to health care and local employment with the decision makers in our federal parliament. Still on the topic of advocacy, and in a similar vein, the Fund Our Future campaign, which is being led by the National Growth Areas Alliance, has been picking up pace. ´ µ ¶ ¥· ¦ ´¶¢ ¢ ¢ ¸£ ¤ £ outer suburbs such as ours lack access to adequate roads, public transport and health facilities. Fund Our Future calls for a national dedicated infrastructure fund to address the backlog in these areas and future-proof them, as they continue to grow. Locally, that means duplication of the Ballarat Rail Line to Melton to provide an all-day train service in both directions with frequent services so residents can access employment, health and leisure activities without having to rely on a vehicle. Along with Mayors from western Melbourne municipalities – representing over 850,000 people – we advocated strongly for the major infrastructure projects that are vital to the wellbeing of our extended community. In particular, I spoke to our federal politicians about our local public transport woes and emphasised that the duplication of the train line into the city is a non-negotiable project that needs funding immediately. ¡¢ £ ¤ ¤ ¢ ¥ ¦ § agenda and highlighted to the ministers we met. It makes sense that, by investing in the growth of employment opportunities in the local area and the western suburbs of Melbourne, we can dramatically reduce our reliance on our roads. I can understand the frustration local residents have in relation to these issues. Councillors feel exactly the same. Delegations to Canberra might seem futile; especially since many of these infrastructure projects are decades overdue. However, the only way to ensure our future infrastructure needs are delivered is to give a clear, concise message to the people who make the decisions and ensure they’re listening to us. SPORT New blood, experience put Mustangs in a finals mood The coach of the Melton men’s hockey side, Glenn Lawrence, is confident his side has what it takes to return to the Victorian League finals this season. The Mustangs went down a development path in 2015, getting games into a number of the club’s talented youngsters with an eye on fast-tracking their progress. They have a season of senior hockey under their belts and some experienced recruits have joined the group, so Lawrence is confident his side can make a jump up the ladder this year. “The guys are in a situation where they are fit,” Lawrence said. “We have made sure we have done extra sprint work, extra resistance work and we have worked a lot on our skills. “I think we need to judge our season on …
making a drive and really showing the rest of the competition that we have progressed. “I think the only way to do that is to make the finals.” Lawrence said the key to taking the next step would be putting more scoreboard pressure on opposition teams. Repeatedly last season, the Mustangs were matching sides in general play but were unable to find the back of the net. “I think these experienced players coming in will give our younger guys the confidence to score,” Lawrence said. “These guys coming in know where the goals are. “I think it will allow us to win a few more games and really make a dive for that top-four position.”
On the pitch Melton will be led by Ryan Self, who has been appointed captain. John Kovarik has been named vice-captain while Bo Kelly, Myles Bentley and Andrew Arnold make up the club’s leadership group. Lawrence said Self was the ideal choice for the captaincy. “Ryan has been captain before, he is the club’s goalkeeper for the firsts and has been with us since the juniors,” he said. “He has taken leadership roles before and really put his hand up this year. It is great that he wants to do that.” Melton will begin its 2016 Vic League 3 campaign with a home match against Old Melburnians on April 16. Liam Twomey
Devils dig top challenge By Liam Twomey Darley has no issues with being the hunted this Ballarat Football League season. The Devils are coming off a stunning premiership win last year in which they bulldozed their way through the finals series, leaving a path of destruction en route to claiming the premiership cup. While most fans of the league are expecting a large target sign to be visible on the backs of the Darley players, nothing has changed for head coach Jarrod Edwards. “Our mindset at the club the past few years has been that way anyway,” he said. “We have always had a feeling that for one reason or another every side wants to knock Darley off. “In our minds, not a lot has changed from that. We have always felt we have been the side that everyone wants to beat. “That is the same mindset we are taking going into this year.” The Devils wasted no time strengthening their squad in the off-season, welcoming Mitch Banner to the group in November. The 25-year-old was originally drafted to the Port Adelaide Football Club in 2008, playing 19 games for the Power across three years. He then played VFL with Williamstown, winning a premiership with the Seagulls last year. Darley has also managed to keep the majority of its 2015 premiership side, with Nathan Lyons, who is heading to the Essendon District Football League, one of only a few outs at the club. Edwards said a key to the club’s success had been maintaining the continuity in its playing group. “That is what we build our club and our culture on,” he said. “Our biggest strength over the last five or six years has been being able to retain guys. Guys generally don’t come and go. “I think that was a big part of why we had our success last year. A lot of these guys have now had that extended period of time playing together. “That gives them that opportunity to set some good foundations.” The Devils’ development programs has also caught the attention at higher levels, with four players invited to undertake pre-season training with Geelong. From there Jake Edwards was selected for the Cats’ 2016 squad and Luke Delahey and Leigh Spiteri were selected to be a part of the Geelong VFL development program. Matt Inglis would have joined his teammates at the Cats were it not for a serious ankle injury sustained in a practice match that will sideline him for the year. “Unfortunately, we lost one of our gun young kids in Matty,” Edwards said. “That is very disappointing for him. 44 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 29, 2016

on Geelong Football League club Leopold on Saturday, April 2, at Leopold from 2pm. The club will open its 2016 premiership defence with a home game against Melton South on April 9.

Game plan ‘bloods’ young Mustangs A new game plan could be Melton’s secret weapon in the early stages of the Victorian women’s hockey league season. The Mustangs have been working on their playing style during the pre-season, and it appears to have had an immediate impact. The Victorian League 2 outfit was ultra competitive against higher ranked opponents Werribee, La Trobe Uni and CV Blazers during practice matches. While keeping the exact changes to the game plan under wraps, Melton women’s coach Ron Shadbolt said the results, so far, had been encouraging. “So far, we have played five matches using the new structure,” Shadbolt said. “I think the positive results have given the women a lot of confidence for the season. “We didn’t field our strongest senior team or our strongest reserves team in those matches. “We played a few young players because we wanted to see what they can do. “They have all come away on a high and we are really excited for the season.” Shadbolt will share coaching duties with David Gorton this season. The pair were also co-coaches last year. Shadbolt said the biggest difference he sees between this pre-season and last is the competition for spots in the top side. “We have introduced five new juniors and they are all performing very well, especially considering that, for some of them, it is their first taste of VL hockey,” he said. “The plan for this year is to introduce as many young players as possible, who we think are capable of playing in this league. “We have also got a strong senior group. That group of players also know that their job is to get these young players blooded, help their system on the field, and then these young guys can start taking over.” Melton will begin its season against WestVic Hockey Club on April 16. Melton marvel’s golden run signals a bright future Melvin Monleh was carrying some extra weight in his suitcase when he returned from the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Perth earlier this month. The 13-year-old needed to make room for four gold medals. Monleh dominated the sprint events at the championships, claiming individual gold medals in the under-15 100 metres and 200 metres. Not done there, he also anchored Victoria’s 4 x 100 metre and 4 x 200 metre relay teams to victory. Monleh’s coach, Steve Gaffney, said the performances were up there with the best of the young star’s career.
“This year Melvin is much more into the Athletics Victoria and Athletics Australia junior pathways,” Gaffney said. “Prior to that, he was in Little Athletics competitions. “These are fantastic results for him. He is actually racing the best runners in the under-15 age group in the country. He is doing that, at this stage, quite easily.” Monleh got his start at the Sunbury Little Athletics Centre, where he enjoyed outstanding success, winning three gold medals and one silver at the Australian Little Athletics Championships last year. As well as progressing to youth competition, the Melton resident was also given a scholarship to the Maribyrnong Sports Academy.
Gaffney said there were two major strengths to Monleh’s sprinting. “One of his real strengths is his natural speed,” he said. “The other is, there is a lot of fluency in his running. He is quite a natural runner … one of the most natural that I would have come across in almost 40 years of coaching.” Monleh’s next major event will be the national all schools championships later this year. Gaffney thinks Monleh could qualify for the world youth or world junior championships in coming years. Liam Twomey

Richardson stays at City By Lance Jenkinson Former Australian international Nicole Richardson will remain on the City West Falcons coaching staff, despite taking on a specialist role with Perth-based West Coast Fever for the upcoming ANZ Championship netball season. “Richo” has been an integral part of the success of the Falcons in the Victorian Netball League, helping develop some of the players who have gone on to feature in the Trans-Tasman competition, along with the implementation of game plans and culture. The 45-year-old, a one-time dual-sport international in netball and softball, was offered a full-time assistant coaching role with Adelaide Thunderbirds, but declined in favour of a part-time job with the Fever so she can remain based in Melbourne. “It’s just a fly in, fly out role in Perth,” Richardson told Star Weekly.
“I’ll only miss about two VNL games, so I’ve got the best of both worlds. “The Thunderbirds [job] would’ve required me to move to Adelaide.” Richardson is keen to get experience in the ANZ Championship, with potential to work at one of the proposed expansion clubs. The 10-team competition is looking to add three new teams, with the possibility of a second side in Melbourne to rival the Vixens. “If I want to put my hand up for a gig like that, I need coaching experience at that level behind me,” Richardson said. “When the WA offer came up, I grabbed it.” City West hit the court for the start of their annual pre-season tournament last Wednesday. After practice matches against state men’s team, it was the first chance for coach Marg Lind to see her squad against VNL opposition. “It’s about getting the players out on court and testing our combinations and our structures and strategies,” Richardson said.
“We’re not overly concerned about results yet.” For the record, the Falcons split their opening night results, losing 29-28 to Southern Saints and beating Monash University Storm 35-22. The Falcons have an injury concern out of the opening night with Jacqui Newton rolling her ankle against the Saints. It was a big night for Anger Akek, who is believed to be the first Sudanese-born player to feature in VNL competition. Akek, who lives in Werribee, landed with the Falcons on a scholarship through the Altona Netball Association. “She’s very athletic and once she gets confident on court and within the environment, we’ll see her develop into a really good athlete,” Richardson said. The Falcons will face Peninsula Waves and ACU Sovereigns at the State Netball and Hockey Centre tonight.
Spring Hills is ready to meet the challenges of its promotion head-on this soccer season. The Stallions have jumped to state league 4 on the back of a thrilling title win last year. And in what is a huge boost, Spring Hills has managed to keep its winning group together. Darren Traynor will return as head coach while Tom Markovski will continue in his role as coaching director. Known for its youthfulness, the experience his side picked up in securing last year’s title would prove vital in dealing with its jump in class, Markovski said. “We have given a lot of opportunities to the boys who have come through the ranks of the under 18s,” he said. “Some of those boys stepped up to help us win the fifth division … we are really looking forward to seeing how they improve this year. They are a bit more mature now … we just need to be focused and take our chances. That will be a big key for us.” Spring Hills will make its state league 4 debut with an away match against Surf Coast on April 2. The Stallions will then host Bell Park in round two. Set to line up against a host of new opposition, Markovski believes results in the first six weeks will prove essential in identifying where the club sits. “Overall, we are probably aiming for a mid table finish,” he said. “That is how we are looking at it after being promoted, but it does depend on those first six games. “If you start well, then you go for promotion. If you don’t, then you’re fighting off relegation, so we will have to see. Next year, we will aim to be promoted again,” Markovski said. The jump for the men’s team has created a nice buzz at Spring Hills in the off-season, with membership base surpassing the 1000 mark. With strong numbers across its junior women’s sides for a number of years, Spring Hills has also launched a senior women’s side. The Stallions will start in state league 4. The long-term goal for both men’s and women’s teams is to continue to beat down the promotion door, to ensure talented juniors don’t need to go elsewhere to play. “The idea is to get local talent,” Markovski said. “We are the biggest club in the Melton shire … we wanted to give these kids somewhere to go.” Liam Twomey 45 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 29, 2016
