Food Standards Australia and New Zealand has issued a recall notice for 20 Tripod Farmers products. Mr Ruffo reassured the public the company’s other products were safe to eat, and said the farm had been thoroughly cleaned. The health department has not ruled out that fertiliser may be the source of the bacteria, causing its outbreak. The department’s senior medical advisor, Finn Romanes, called the outbreak of “moderate size, but quite significant”, and urged people not to consume the recalled products. Dr Romanes said tests of three products from two batches of pre-packaged lettuce distributed by Tripod Farmers had tested positive for the uncommon salmonella bacteria. Further test results are expected to be known this week.

The Bacchus Marsh company at the centre of a recent salmonella outbreak has suspended some farming and processing operations while investigations into its cause continue. The number of suspected cases of the Salmonella anatum strain had climbed to more than 100 nationwide by last weekend. Moorabool mayor Allan Comrie commended Tripod Farmers for “being on the front foot of its recall and working closely with health authorities”. “The thing that’s annoying to me, as the news comes out, is no-one has mentioned [that] the company itself reported there was a problem,” Cr Comrie said. “They’ve involved themselves in the investigation and said ‘we’ve got a problem’. “They’re trying to do everything they can to minimise the problem.” An urgent recall was issued last Thursday for Coles Four Leaf Mix, Woolworths salad mix, SupaSalad Supamix, and Wash N Toss salad mix, with consumption dates up to and including February 14. There are 28 people reportedly affected by the bacteria. In a statement, Tripod Farmers owner Mark Ruffo apologised to consumers affected by the recall. “We are continuing to work closely with health authorities to determine the cause and extent of the problem, and with our customers to manage an effective recall,” Mr Ruffo said. Tripod Farmers website says the company was started as a small family-run business in 1989 by third generation farmers.

Contracts torn up, jobs go By Sumeyya Ilanbey Bacchus Marsh truckies are reeling after losing their jobs four months into a year-long contract with Boral. Last month, the logistics branch of the quarry company announced that 20 drivers, including three from Bacchus Marsh, would be made redundant because the company would now use contractor Lorry Owner Driver instead of company drivers. Boral Construction Materials Victorian general manager Paul Dalton said the company

was in contact with the Transport Workers Union (TWU) and looking to redeploy a number of the affected employees into other roles within the business. “Employees affected by this change will receive redundancy payments and be provided with appropriate support to assist them through their transition,” Mr Dalton said. “This change is necessary to help the business improve its position in a very competitive market.” But TWU senior organiser Chris Fennell is “outraged” at Boral’s decision to make drivers redundant.

He said truckies had only recently signed a new 12-month contract. “It’s an outrageous, cost-cutting exercise and nothing more than a company bypassing an agreement they have made with a union representing workers before that agreement had expired,” Mr Fennell said. “Is this a new low in the Australian business model? Or is it an American model?” The news came as a shock to the drivers just a week before Australia Day, with most expecting to have a job at least until September.

Ballan’s war sacrifices treasured

Police close in on street racing An 18-year-old Melton woman was among 26 people arrested last week in a police operation targeting illegal street racing. Members of the Taskforce Regarder executed 20 warrants at properties across the state on Wednesday morning, charging 26 people and seizing 18 vehicles. The taskforce was formed late last year in response to the increasing number of hoon gatherings across metropolitan Melbourne. Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill described the offenders as “arrogant and over-confident” and said they faced serious criminal charges, including conduct endangering life. “These irresponsible people, including the event organisers and drivers, place their lives and the lives of others at risk,” he said. “These hoons are arrogant, over-confident. Unfortunately, the reckless driving behaviour continues to plague our suburbs. They brag about their behaviour online and our message to them is: we see you, we’ll find you, we’ll charge you and seize your car,” Assistant Commissioner Hill said. Police said many of those arrested last week were connected to the South East Skids, a group that organises illegal burn-out meets. It is suspected some were associated with another prominent group, the Northern Skids. The arrests come a week after the deaths of two teenagers whose car plunged into a ravine at EJ Whitten Bridge. Harley Churchill, 19, and Ivana Clonaridis, 18, are believed to have attended a street gathering in the northern suburbs before the crash.

Ballan’s World War I service men and women will be commemorated with a new memorial. Ballan’s Historical Society, the Returned Services League and District Health and Care have been working together on a We Remember: WWI Memorial, which will be placed in the front garden of the healthcare centre. Ballan RSL president Bob Nason said everyone concerned was excited about the project. The memorial will include the names of more than 800 men and women who served in WWI. Most of them are not listed on Ballan’s existing cenotaph. “It’s important to remember the sacrifices they and their families made that allow us to lead the lives we do today,” Mr Nason said. “Those who have gone off to serve the country allow us the freedom we enjoy today.” Mr Nason hopes the accessibility and visibility of the memorial – which will include commemorative pavers, inground lighting and landscaping that will include Anzac roses – will help the names live on in the community’s memory. Backlash as phone tower goes up By Sumeyya Ilanbey Caroline Springs parents fear their children will be exposed to harmful radiation from a mobile phone tower erected close to schools and kindergartens. The 30-metre tower has gone up at the Brookside Recreation Reserve after the council granted Vodafone a planning permit last August. But locals say they weren’t aware of the telco’s proposal, or council’s decision, until recently. Caroline Springs father Seamus Ryan has accused Vodafone of choosing an inappropriate site that is “community sensitive” and of failing to inform locals and nearby schools of a “very

major project”. He has started a Facebook group, Residents against the mobile phone tower at Brookside Recreation Reserve, which gained almost 450 followers in less than a week. “There’s never been a long-term study about the health effects of mobile phone towers,” Mr Ryan said. “But our concern is we don’t want to be the guinea pigs for this and find out 20 years down the track that there are health consequences.” Mr Ryan said if the planning permit wasn’t reversed, he would consider enrolling his children, who study at a nearby school, at another school farther away from the site. A Caroline Springs resident, who did not want to be named, said they were worried

the thousands of students attending nearby schools, kindergartens and sporting clubs, would be exposed to harmful radiation. “I’m sure if there had been the proper due diligence, a far more suitable place for this tower would have been found,” the resident said. In a Facebook post, parents at Brookside P-9 College, which adjoins the reserve, said they were not aware of Vodafone’s plans until December.

A Vodafone spokeswoman said nearby residents were informed by letter of the plans for a tower, and three signs had been erected about the proposed plan. “Vodafone conducted a thorough investigation of potential sites for a new telecommunications facility in the Caroline Springs area, and numerous sites were considered as part of the process,” the spokeswoman said. She said the site’s appropriateness, planning considerations, and engineering and coverage capabilities were taken into consideration. Melton council planning services manager Bob Baggio said four objections were received after Vodafone applied for its permit last year.

‘Voices’ tell the story For almost three years, Sue Buckingham dismissed an “inside voice” urging her to write a book. But as the voice got stronger, she found it harder to resist. Ms Buckingham embarked on a new journey – penning a five-part series exploring family history, relationships and complexities. She will launch her second, and latest, book of the series – The Brother’s Farewell – at Melton library later this month. “I really like family history and I’ve always felt a connection with my ancestors,” Ms Buckingham says.

“So when I started writing, things happened very quickly.” Ms Buckingham doesn’t find it hard to envision the appearances and personalities of her characters – it all comes naturally, she says. “I’m excited about what is going to happen in the later series,” she says. “I have a bit of an idea about it, but for me it’s like going on a journey as well – things come to me as I write.” The Brother’s Farewell launch is at 7pm on Monday, February 22, at Melton library.

Bacchus Marsh CFA was called to almost five illegal burn-offs in a week at the end of January, despite being in the midst of a fire-danger period. Bacchus Marsh fire brigade 4th lieutenant Dale Salathiel said people were becoming complacent as the weather appeared to cool down. “We still have hot days in February and March,” he said. “The anniversary of Black Saturday [was] this weekend … people have to remember there have been significant bushfires during this month.” Mr Salathiel said vigilance was needed. “People are still burning off when they shouldn’t be,” he said. “First of all, the fire danger period is still in place but people think the conditions aren’t bad out there so they think they can burn off. “Only a few hot days and strong winds are needed before the state could be in strife. “Rain is helping ease the conditions a little. But if we do get bad weather for a few days, it’s going to dry everything out. “Some areas haven’t copped any rain and they’re still dry.” The fire danger period is expected to end in May. Billing changes to be bitter pill Moves to cut back life-saving bulk-billed Medicare services will hit women in Melbourne’s west hard, a health professional warns. Women’s Health West acting health promotion manager Elly Taylor said the changes, to come into effect in July, would significantly disadvantage women in marginalised communities. And she warned there could be serious health ramifications, including rising numbers of women diagnosed with cervical cancer. Federal Health Minister Sussan Ley has announced that a number of bulk-billing items – including pap tests and medical resonance imaging (MRI) scans – will be pared back in a bid to save $650 million over four years. Ms Taylor worries participation in the cervical screening program will drop even further if women have to pay to have a test. Less than 60 per cent of Victorian women aged between 20 and 69 take part in the National Cervical Screening Program, and this figure is much lower in Melton. Only 51.7 per cent of Melton women had pap tests in 2011-12, Cancer Council figures show. Aboriginal, refugee, migrant, young, disabled, lesbian and bisexual women were less likely to access pap screens, even though they are free. “We don’t have good pap screening rates in the west, and our biggest concern is that when

you add a financial cost to a program that has been free, you just create more significant barriers, particularly for disadvantaged and marginalised women” Ms Taylor said. “In the short term, we’ll see a decrease in the women accessing the pap test service. And in the long term, we’ll see an outcome where there are higher rates of cervical cancer.”

Almost 90 per cent of Victorian women who develop cervical cancer had never had a test or were not routinely tested in the 10 years prior to their diagnosis, Victorian Cervical Cytology Registry data shows. If pap test subsidies are cut from Medicare, the cost to the national healthcare system will be significantly higher, Ms Taylor warned. “We know preventive health measures work,” she said. “And politically it’s important the government understands, and invests in, preventive health. [Free pap screen testing] is one of Australia’s most successful health programs.” A spokesman for Ms Ley conceded patients might be slugged up to $30 for a pap screen test. But he accused pathology companies of “price gouging” – marking up their costs by more than they would be losing from the cutbacks to government subsidies.

Mum’s food right fight When Brooke Findley’s daughter was diagnosed with food allergies a few years ago, the Melton woman started thinking more seriously about health and nutrition. The registered nurse was alarmed at the lack of information in Melton about healthy living. “People in inner-city suburbs are getting the right nutrition information and support to live healthier lives,” Ms Findley said. “Why aren’t we?” Ms Findley has seen the devastating effects of diet-related illnesses. “[My] own daughter suffers from food allergies, which sparked off a personal quest

to research food and nutrition, and start [my] own organic food distribution business,” she said. The Organic Place delivers fresh fruit and vegetables to households. MY PLACE Gordon resident Mary-Teresa Ritchie is one of the first to roll up her sleeves for the Moorabool community. The ever-ready volunteer spoke to Esther Lauaki about why she’s so willing to help.

How long have you lived in the area? This is the beginning of our fifth year in Moorabool and I often describe Gordon to other people as a ‘secret paradise’. It really is glorious here and I just love the fluctuations in the weather – the unpredictability of it. What groups do you volunteer for? The Gordon public hall has a drop-in morning tea every Wednesday for community members, which is how I first became involved … I dropped in for morning tea … next thing I knew I was secretary of the Gordon public hall committee of management! This certainly helped me find my place in Moorabool. The Gordon public hall has community programs, classes and events on almost every week night, and is often booked on the weekends. Recently, a new deck and storage room extension were built on the back of the hall. How did you get into volunteering? From this beginning, and as we live just a

stone’s throw from the tennis courts, I tracked down the last remaining member of the Gordon public park committee of management, and managed to get a new committee up and running in order to rejuvenate the public park – I am no longer on that committee, but recently the first phase of the masterplan was completed when the Gordon tennis courts were resurfaced. They were almost unplayable when I moved here and are now spick and span and brand new. The current Gordon public park committee is doing a fabulous job and is now looking at installing a small skate park and a basketball half-court – a great example of a relatively new committee doing wonderful things for the local community. What do you love most about Moorabool people? One of the things I love most about the people I meet in Moorabool is the amount of pride they feel for their little pockets of the shire. Most people I encounter are only too keen to tell me how much they love where they live, be it Elaine, Yendon, Blackwood, Gordon, Ballan, Bacchus Marsh, or wherever. This makes it so much easier for volunteers to work on community-based activities or improvements to existing facilities. What about the leadership program you did? I undertook the Moorabool shire community leadership program [last year]. One of its best aspects was the people I met and the connections I made. I also learnt a lot about myself as a person and how I like to work in the community, and in general.

What are your connections to Moorabool? My family and I moved to Gordon at the start of 2012 following a three-year stint in Perth. I actually already had a bit of a connection to the Moorabool area – my father’s grandfather was Harry Blake, who owned and operated the Blakeville sawmill “back in the day”. The sawmill is no longer there (nor is my great grandfather), but you can go out to Blakeville and see the old site. My mother grew up in Newlyn and my siblings and I were all born in Creswick, so there is strange historical linkage to the area from both sides of my family.

SPORT Melton bats wilt against Tiger attack’s ripping effort Keeping it at the foot of the ladder, Melton suffered a comprehensive loss to Werribee in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association on Saturday. Batting first, Melton managed just 119 from its 45 overs. Captain Michael Alexander was the only batsman to look comfortable, the opener reaching 35. But once his wicket fell, the Werribee bowlers ripped through the lower order. Jack Budd claimed 3-11, with James Freeman and Brad Robertson also impressive in taking two wickets each. In reply, the Tigers had no trouble chasing down the small target thanks to another brilliant knock from Shaun Dean. The opener

scored an unbeaten 56, taking his season’s run tally to 573. Dean combined with his brother Matthew for a 39-run opening stand before reeling in most of the remaining runs with first drop Tim O’Brien. Saturday’s result drops Melton to 13th on the VSDCA south-west ladder, while Werribee moves to fifth. In other round 11 matches, Sunshine was unable to match it with Oakleigh in their one-dayer on Saturday. Line-ball for the Lions By Liam Twomey One good partnership is all that stands between Darley and a guaranteed place in the Ballarat Cricket Association finals series. The Lions are locked in a tight tussle with Mt Clear after day one of their match on Saturday. Chasing Mt Clear’s total of 124, Darley requires 65 more to win with five wickets in hand. Lions’ captain-coach Heath Pritchard said making the most of the bad balls would be the message to his remaining batsmen. “We just need to get some partnerships together,” he said. “We’ll need to work pretty hard and if the ball is in your zone you certainly have to hit it. “At 5-60, they need five more wickets and we need 65 more runs so it’s pretty square.” After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Mt Clear was in all sorts of trouble early thanks to a Darley triple strike. Opening bowlers Bradley Barnes and Pritchard blasted through the Lions’ top order to have Mt Clear 3-0. Youngsters fall at the final hurdle It was grand final heartache for Central Highlands at the Victorian Bushrangers under-18 state championships at the MCG on Sunday. Looking for their first state title since 2013, the Highlanders had their chances against Metropolitan South East Bayside but eventually fell 35 runs short. Highlanders coach Paull Jeffrey said it was the little things that made the difference. Metropolitan South East Bayside batted first and was bowled out for 232 in its final allocated over. “We’d like to have batted first and put the pressure on them to chase but we lost the toss,” Jeffrey said. “Two of their batsmen went on to make scores and we dropped both of them when they were on about 10. It could have been a different story. “We could have done things a bit differently.” Bacchus Marsh’s Jack Lalor and East Ballarat’s Harli Givvens took three wickets each for the Highlanders. At 1-91 in reply, the Highlanders appeared on track to chase down the runs with ease. But then it all went wrong and they lost 9-106 in being dismissed for 197. “We lost wickets at crucial times,” Jeffrey said. “A few of our players were caught on the boundary, hitting the ball straight down fielders’ throats. “They executed better in the field than we did; they fielded really well.” With 61, Tom Rogers, originally from Gisborne, was the Highlanders’ standout batsman. It took his total for the tournament to 338 at an average of 84.50. “He had a fantastic week and he’s only 16,” Jeffrey said. “He’s playing Premier Cricket [for Melbourne Uni], which is amazing. “I think he broke the record for the most runs scored by a Central Highlands batsman in an under-18 carnival.” North Ballarat’s Jakob Tidyman made 34 in the final. Despite the loss, Jeffrey said the competition and the chance to play on the MCG had been an amazing experience for the boys. Deer Park continued its strong run through the Bowls Victoria pennant competition with a solid win on Saturday. The Parkers saw off a spirited Preston-Reservoir outfit to claim a seven-shot victory, 76-69. The result maintains Deer Park’s quest for a division 1 home semi-final. The Parkers hold a strong 35-point lead over third-placed Moonee Valley. With three rounds left in the home and away season, Deer Park will take on Altona Sports, Glenroy and Melton. Meanwhile, Melton was able to account for the struggling Werribee to keep its finals hopes alive. Playing on its home green, Melton won by 17 shots, 80-63.

Cricket

Taylors Lakes will hunt an outright win in its Victorian Turf Cricket Association clash against Avondale Heights this week. The Lions dominated day one of the contest on Saturday and have already secured first innings points. Opening bowler Romesh Kaluarachchi claimed two early wickets before first change Kamal Guraya delivered the knockout blow. Guraya ripped through the middle order, taking a staggering 6-14 from 8.4 overs, including five maidens. Avondale Heights was dismissed for 85 in the 38th over, with Taylors Lakes coasting to the victory well before stumps. MOTOR Barina hatch holds its own By David Bonnici

HOLDEN BARINA CDX

The small hatch segment of the market is up there with SUVs in terms of competition, and the Barina continues to hold its own, thanks to good looks and zippy performance. The mid-spec CDX is targeted at young buyers able to fork out around $20,000 for a first car and who want a few extras. A basic seven-inch touch screen at the centre of the dash features Holden’s MyLink entertainment system, with built-in apps such as Pandora and TuneIn to let you stream music, and BringGo for access 3D maps. This is a common feature in Holdens. The radio has decent sound quality, and you can easily play your own music via Bluetooth or a USB. The music even keeps playing when you turn off the ignition, until you open the door – this is unlike a lot of new cars, particularly those with keyless start. Inside The interior is very modular, starting with the gauges and warning lights, which are all in a little plastic container that is plonked on the dashboard in front of the steering wheel. It has a big, round analog rev counter, with the rest of the info, including speed, fuel contents, odometer and selected gear, in a neat blue LDC display. The whole unit looks a bit odd at first, but I couldn’t help admire its simplicity. The plastic continues throughout the cabin, particularly down the centre of the dashboard and central console, much of it in a faux-metal

finish, including the air vents. The seats are reasonably comfortable, with plenty of legroom in the front, and you’ll easily fit two adult passengers in the back. The mid-spec CDX has heated front seats. The boot is average for a hatch, but it will easily fit a trolley full of shopping or a couple of medium-sized suitcases. Needless to say, the back seats go down for extra cargo space. Good looks The Barina’s styling has universal appeal. The

front has nice angular lines leading to double headlights, and the grille looks like its bigger Holden stablemates. The CDX’s look is bolstered by fog lamps and attractive 17-inch alloy wheels. The only drawback in styling is a low front bumper, which tends to scrape speed humps or bollards. The rear looks pretty good, but the sleek-looking back window limits vision, and while the rearview camera compensates for this when parking, this isn’t available in the base model CD.

Performance The Barina travels well even with the automatic transmission. The 1.6 litre engine gives more than enough power to get up hills or pass trucks. You’ll get about 700kms on a full tank. The Barina sits in the middle of the small car range, both in terms of price and quality. The base model CD comes for about $15,000, with an extra $7000 for the CDX features. Something in between with just a few options, including the reverse camera, would be a winner.
