Panic empties shelves Panicked buyers are leaving supermarket shelves bare in Melbourne’s west as coronavirus fears spread. And a leading doctor reports that Australia is suffering from not having a co-ordinated approach among GPs. By Tuesday, the COVID-19 virus had reached more than 100 countries with about 110,000 known cases and more than 3800 confirmed deaths. The number of diagnosed cases in Australia has now topped 100, including 12 people in Victoria. Three deaths have been recorded. Panic-buying has led to nationwide shortages of household staples including toilet paper, hand sanitiser, pasta and flour and key items are
in short supply in suburbs across Melbourne’s west, despite supermarkets introducing buying limits. Laverton North’s Encore Tissue, which makes icare toilet paper, said the buying hysteria has fuelled demand but is likely to be a short-term “bubble”. “I don’t understand it, it’s just crazy,” director David Holckner said. “Our contacts overseas have informed us that similar behaviour is occurring in other countries.” He said retail contacts had reported sales had increased fourfold in products such as pasta, flour, rice and anything with a long shelf life. “Therefore the demand through the whole system is in that order of magnitude but it’s just a bubble, it’s a blip, and it will settle down after the panic buying stops,” Mr Holckner said. Yarraville-based food charity Foodbank
Australia issued a plea to people to avoid panic buying large quantities and to only purchase what they needed for up to a fortnight. “In the past few days we’ve seen images of empty shelves across the nation, yet our most vulnerable community members – pensioners, residents in retirement homes and people with disabilities – are turning up to their local shops on their weekly shopping trip, only to face bare shelves and head home empty-handed.” The Victorian Council of Social Service echoed the call, noting that people on low incomes aren’t able to panic buy and stockpile household goods. “Runs on essential items hurt people in poverty,” it said in a statement. “So please stop and think about others before you empty out the supermarket shelves.” Altona North GP Mukesh Haikerwal said

Parking changes unpopular By Goya Dmytryshchak Commuters have vented their anger at Hobsons Bay council plans to implement two and four hour parking restrictions in the streets immediately north of Seaholme train station. One said this would mean no all-day parking north of the station, stopping people from catching the train. Hobsons Bay infrastructure and city services director Sanjay Manivasagasivam said the proposed changes were prompted by residents. “Following concerns from local residents living in the streets surrounding Seaholme

station, council officers proposed alternative parking and traffic conditions on Central Avenue, Waratah Street, Wattle Grove and Acacia Avenue, in an attempt to find a solution which will meet the needs of both local residents and commuters,” he said. “The proposal from officers included introducing two and four hour parking
restrictions from 9am to 5pm, implementing one way traffic conditions and introducing on-street parking line markings.” The station has 10 defined parking bays for commuters, including two disabled parking bays, and limited parallel parking accessed by mounting a kerb on the southern side. Janet posted on the council’s Facebook page that “train commuters should be allowed to park anywhere near the station until a suitable car park is provided”. Matt, who said he lived in one of the affected streets, described it as “a ridiculous idea” to make streets one-way.
“Put parking on Central Avenue like you have done to the other side of the tracks,” he posted. Megan wrote: “I fully appreciate the concerns of residents but it is almost impossible to get parking near train stations these days”. Ana wrote: “It is a disgrace to create two hour spots outside a train station. The climate change message is avoid using your car, then councils and government enforce the opposite”. Mr Manivasagasivam said the council would consider feedback received and would consult with the community again before any changes were implemented.

Tyra reaches for the stars and a host of other space-related activities such as building and launching a rocket. Tyra’s mum Dana has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover travel expenses and the cost of the camp. “Tyra will be away for two and half weeks, it is a very independent trip where they have to use their skills, so there is going to be a lot of self development,” Dana said. Dana said the camp will bring together students from around the world, each with their own vision impairment. “There is something relatable about that
for Tyra,” she said. “At school they don’t always understand why she might be having difficulty with some things, but with children experiencing the same thing, she will have that in common.” While Tyra has long had an interest in space, she hopes to become an author and an ophthalmologist so she can help children with their own vision problems. Maidstone student Tyra Trandy is shooting for the stars. Tyra was born with septo-optic dysplasia and is classified as legally blind, but refuses to let the incurable condition thwart her dreams as she prepares to embark on her biggest adventure to date. The 15-year-old student has been chosen to travel to Alabama in September to take part in a space camp for students. A Maribyrnong woman plans on helping out her children, taking a holiday and upgrading her home after winning more than $1 million in a recent TattsLotto draw. The woman, who has chosen to remain anonymous, was one of four division one winners in the February 29 draw. Each winner will receive $1,095,232. Cook, restaurateur and food writer Stephanie Alexander visited Altona North Primary School on Friday to celebrate some big news. The school will become part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation healthy eating program, thanks to a partnership with property developer Mirvac to update the campus garden and cooking facilities. Pupils in years 3 and 4 will be part of the food education program. “Children learn the joys of growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing fresh, seasonal delicious food, meaning young
people develop food literacy and positive food behaviours, which they carry on into adult life,” Ms Alexander said. “Outside the school gate, we know that children are taking home these skills to mum and dad and encouraging their families to eat delicious food too. “Altona North is just starting out on its kitchen garden journey and this is my first visit. “I look forward to seeing what has happened here and to hear about the plans for the future.”

Boosting women’s sports activity By Alesha Capone Councils in Melbourne’s west have joined together to come up with a five-year plan to increase the number of girls and women involved in sport and active recreation. The plan, which was released in draft form last week, has been developed by Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Brimbank, Melton, Moonee Valley and Melbourne councils in collaboration with Women’s Health West and the state government. After being endorsed by Wyndham council last Tuesday, the draft plan
will be released for public consultation. Thirteen focus groups involving 66 women participated in a study to develop the draft plan, including women from multicultural backgrounds, women with a disability, new mothers, workers, women aged over 65 and LGBTQI women. Findings included that it was difficult for women with children to become involved with sport and fitness activities. Women also reported they were concerned about their safety on public transport, especially when waiting at more remote train
stations and bus stops, in order to access sport or recreation. They were also worried about safety when looking to exercise outdoors in the early morning and evening. The draft plan state its strategic priorities would include providing safe and accessible spaces and transport routes to maximise opportunities for women and girls to participate in physical activity. Supporting a mix of free or low-cost programs and activities which are inclusive of women and girls of all ages, cultures and abilities was also on the list of priorities.
The draft plan stated a breakdown of the 12 major sports played in Melbourne’s west showed that, in general, “there are significantly more male than females registered sports participants” in the region. According to the draft, 9.9 per cent (4408 women and girls) of females aged between 4 and 99 years of age in Hobsons Bay are involved in sport. Just 6.4 per cent of females living in Wyndham (6751 women and girls) are involved in sport, compared with 6.2 per cent (2504) in Maribyrnong, 5.7 per cent in Melton (3803) and 4.2 per cent in Brimbank (3916).
Empowering young girls Melbourne Renegades and Victorian women’s cricket player, Courtney Neale last week dropped into Mount St Joseph Girls’ College in Altona. The fast bowler, who is studying to be a paramedic, was helping launch Cricket Victoria’s Girls Leadership program. She hosted a school assembly, taking the girls through power poses and body confidence. ”Empowering young girls to lead is something that I’m passionate about,“ Neale said. “Body confidence and standing strong are important attributes for leaders to develop, and it was great to see the girls at Mount St Joseph Girls’ College embrace the opportunity to stand tall.” The statewide program empowers girls in years 7 and 8 to be positive role models as they consider becoming future leaders. About 1000 girls have participated in the
program since its inception five years ago. The college’s sports co-ordinator Sue Sofarnos said the program had been an integral part of the school’s junior sports captains’ development for the past three years. “The program prepares our girls to look at what truly is involved in being a leader beyond a title, and encourages them to think about their own leadership style, the need to stand strong, with a focus on building their confidence and resilience,” she said. The program involves six, 20-minute online modules exploring different themes of leadership including standing up for yourself and others, positive body language, resilience and goal setting. Parking stalemate costs millions By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong council has lost more than $10 million in parking fee revenue since switching off parking meters in central Footscray and Yarraville. The meters have been idle since 2015, when a botched effort to introduce paid parking in Yarraville village triggered a revolt from traders and residents who argued the decision was rushed and would harm local business.
The council developed a new parking policy which included a number of “trigger points” that could be used to reintroduce the use of meters. Machines were also removed from Yarraville village last year for relocation to Footscray, where the council attempted to reintroduce fees last June after occupancy rates topped 85 per cent. But a backlash spearheaded by the Footscray Asian Business Association and
negative social media response sparked a council backdown on parking fees “until further notice”, despite a $200,000 loss being recorded for every month the machines remain dormant. A performance report on the council’s fi nancial operations presented to the recent ordinary council meeting noted a fi nancial year “budget variance” of $2.4 million in lost revenue from ticket machines between last July and this June.
The loss takes to more than $10 million the overall loss in revenue since December 2015, with no signs of the machines likely to be switched back on this fi nancial year. The $2.4 million in losses this fi nancial year are the major contributor to an “unfavourable operating and initiative variance” of $186,000 in the council’s overall 2019-2020 budget. Maribyrnong council did not respond to requests for comment.
Marathon effort stalled Morgan has climbed five of the seven summits: Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Elbrus in Russia, Aconcagua in Argentina, Vinson in Antarctica and Kosciuszko here at home. He has completed the Great Ocean Road and New York marathons, and is yet to run in Canberra, Chicago, Berlin, Boston and, of course, Tokyo. Coronavirus has disrupted the plans of a Williamstown man who is literally climbing mountains for diabetes. David Morgan has so far raised more than $30,000 for Diabetes Australia by taking on the 7×7 Challenge – climbing seven summits on seven continents over three years and running seven marathons across the globe. Fresh from Antarctica – the only continent untouched by coronavirus – he had been due to fly to Japan when the Tokyo Marathon was cancelled. Morgan, whose six-year-old daughter Finlay has type 1 diabetes, said he wouldn’t let it stop him from reaching his ultimate goal. “The coronavirus closed down the Tokyo Marathon, which is one of the six world majors,” he said. “I was notified with only a week’s notice to go. “Because it’s still part of the world series, they’re still running 200 professional runners around the city for the qualifying aspect – I mean, it’s an Olympic qualifier.”

Sentence upheld for ice import By Goya Dmytryshchak A man serving 20 years jail for importing $60 million of methamphetamine in car engines to Altona has lost his Supreme Court bid to appeal his conviction. Jared Samuel Brown was sentenced in 2016 to 12 years jail for importing nearly 50 kilograms of ice but his prison term was increased to 20 years on appeal. The Director of Public Prosecutions had
appealed the original prison term, arguing it was manifestly inadequate. The Court of Appeal in 2017 agreed and increased Brown’s sentence from 12 years with a minimum of seven, to 20 with a non-parole period of 15. Brown’s latest appeal against his conviction for importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug was rejected by the Court of Appeal. He unsuccessfully sought to appeal on grounds including that the trial judge’s directions to the jury resulted in a
substantial miscarriage of justice. In March, 2013, a vessel carrying, among other goods, four motor vehicle engines containing about 4.4 kilograms of methamphetamine arrived in Melbourne from California. Brown, with another man, took the engines to an Altona premises owned by a friend of his. The court heard the engines were dismantled and the packages removed, before Brown stored the drugs at his parents’ home. Brown
handed the drugs over to a man in a carpark at Chadstone shopping centre. In July the same year, another vessel arrived in Melbourne from California containing nine motor vehicle engines. Secreted in the engines were 103 packages containing 44.6 kilograms of pure methamphetamine. The packages were detected by authorities and the drugs substituted with salt. Brown was arrested in August after taking the packages to his apartment in Richmond.
Become a pasta master Pasta-making will be offered in the first of a series of workshops at the monthly Slow Food Melbourne Farmers’ Market. Spotswood’s Giustina Oddi, founder of the business Eat Plate Love, is hosting a workshop teaching people how to make different types of pasta to take home at this month’s market on Saturday, March 28. The market moved to Spotswood Kingsville RSL last February after more than 11 years at Abbotsford Convent. Ms Oddi, of Spotswood, said she started her business last October and the market enabled her to use the RSL club’s kitchen as she couldn’t operate from home. “I’ve asked my mum to come and give me a hand because she does this … with her eyes closed,” Ms Oddi said. “Usually, we don’t go off recipes - we usually just go by look and feel. “It’s basically just about making it very easy to use produce that they have purchased from the farmers’ market to go home and do these things themselves.
“A lot of people think it’s really tricky but it’s quite easy. “We’ll be doing a demonstration on how to make fettuccine and spinach and ricotta ravioli.” Slow Food Melbourne president Alison Peake said the planned April workshop would be how to make your own cleaning products, hosted by Frances Lourey, who runs The Conscientious Cook. “The focus will be sustainable and easily accessible ingredients which are good for the environment and cheap and easy to use,” Ms Peake said. “Later in the year we will be doing urban harvest workshops cropping lemons and olives from the local neighbourhood.” The market has more than 50 stalls selling items including fruit, vegetables, nuts, grains, meat, poultry, dairy artisanal products and pantry staples. Seabrook photographer Fabiana Canepa has put the focus on gender-based violence as part of a national exhibition launched in Canberra on International Women’s Day. She is among 100 female photographers whose work features in the Loud and Luminous exhibition, which has a theme of “equality”. Canepa photographed Melbourne-based artist Alisa Tanaka-King standing before some of her portraits of 73 women killed by acts of
challenge gender stereotypes, call out toxic masculinity and strive for fundamental cultural change. “This all begins with equality.” Canepa’s work will also feature in a book presented to the National Library of Australia and gallery exhibitions in Sydney in April, Melbourne in August, and Brisbane in November.

Take a walk for our hospitals “In sickness and in health” – the words most of us associate with marriage vows. But for Kealba husband and wife Deb and Hilmi, this sums up their connection to Western Health. “We began volunteering with Western Health more than seven years ago and have been lucky to work in many areas of the hospital in our time,” Hilmi says. “And we’ve made great friends and memories along the way.” Deb adds that what started with a few hours’ helping out has grown to be a regular ongoing commitment. “This feels like our home,” she says.

SPORT Bulldogs beat Blues and the clock to double chance Footscray captain Dylan Kight was sweating bullets as the hours turned into minutes in the countdown to the end of the Victorian Premier Cricket regular season. The margin of the Bulldogs finals-shaping 46-run victory over Carlton in a low-scoring match at Princes Park seemed comfortable on paper, but it was anything but for Kight and his teammates. Two aspects concerned the Bulldogs, firstly, the late 5.15pm start to the second day’s play, which, at some points, looked as though play might not even get under way, and, secondly, the scoreboard, which Kight felt was tighter than it actually was. With the Bulldogs needing a win to secure a top two finish and avoid missing out on a double chance, Kight was certainly a relieved man when the final Carlton wicket fell, knowing his side’s small total of 161 would not be captured. “It was pretty tense at the end there,” Kight
said. “It didn’t feel like we won by a whole lot and we were probably lucky to get on the ground in the end. “Even starting at 5.15, the umpires were cautious because of player safety, but it turned out to be good for us. “Carlton were just sitting above us by percentage, so it was in our best interests to play.” The difference between final round success and failure had a huge bearing on the finals outlook. Footscray leap-frogged its opponents into second, taking hold of a double chance. Carlton went into a tail spin, tumbling to fifth and facing a finals full of cut-throat games. “It was a pretty draining and tense few days, but it sets us up well for finals,” Kight said. “It’s big, it’s exciting. It means we know it’s not a do-or-die first week. We can shape up for a good solid block of finals.”
Footscray was a little underwhelmed by its score of 161. Getting bowled out early proved to be a blessing in disguise for the Bulldogs though as they managed to take seven wickets before stumps on day one. With Thomas Smyth injured and unavailable to bat for Carlton, it left the Bulldogs with two wickets to take on the second day. Jordan Buckingham struck first, removing Xavier Crone, then Siddhesh Dixit completed the job, sending Cameron Stevenson on his way. Buckingham finished with match-best figures of 4-47. Footscray will host Melbourne in a mouth-watering two-day qualifying final at Merv Hughes Oval this weekend. Seagulls ride wave By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown went into the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association finals oozing with confidence and it showed in a comprehensive seven-wicket dismantling of Taylors Lakes in the qualifying final at the Williamstown Cricket Ground at the weekend. The Seagulls are the most experienced side in the finals, the team with the most accolades and the minor premiers, so there is little doubt the premiership window is wide open. “We’ve got a lot of confidence at the moment,” Seagulls captain-coach Brent McMinn said. “We’ve got a lot of experienced players in our team who have played a lot of finals cricket. “That does give us a little bit of an edge of other teams.” With a semi-final date with Altona back at the Morris Street ground coming this weekend, Williamstown only needs to refer back to the last time the two sides met to know that presents as a danger game. The A’s got the chocolates on that occasion, even in the middle of a rough patch of form in their season. “We only played them a few weeks ago and they did beat us,” McMinn said. “That’s the only game we’ve lost after Christmas and they’ve only won one since Christmas. “We’ve got all the confidence at the moment, they’re obviously down on confidence a bit, only winning one game out of about six after Christmas, but it’ll be a good game, it’s always a good game against Altona. “They always put on an honest contest and we’re looking forward to the challenge. “Hopefully we can get the job done and get ourselves in another grand final.” Altona advance beyond the first round of the finals as the ‘lucky loser’. The highest-ranked losing team after the first round of the finals survives. With a nothing to lose mentality, the A’s could even be more dangerous. Out-of-form Altona was soundly beaten by eight wickets at home against Werribee. On the other hand, Williamstown produced a flawless performance in beating Taylors Lakes. The Seagulls, led by Fraser Hay (4-18), Matt Twentyman (3-15) and Daniel Popa (3-31), skittled the Lions for just 83. Williamstown’s run chase was a blink-andyou’ll-miss effort. The Seagulls passed the target in the 25th over, led by 48 not out from Brenton Hodges. A veteran of the side, wicketkeeper-batsman Hodges continues to set the standards.

“In my opinion, he’s the best keeper in the competition by a long way,” McMinn said. “I haven’t seen too many keepers turn a game with their gloves and he can do that by standing up to the stumps and building an extra element of pressure.” The other semi-final will be contested by Yarraville and Werribee at the Yarraville Oval.

Scoring 11 goals in two weeks will do that, with massive back-to-back wins elevating United back into the top six. United coach Mark Rudan could hear all the detractors following a loss to Wellington Phoenix three weeks ago, but he kept his faith in his playing group and trusted that they would come through better for experiencing a rough patch in the season. Suddenly, confidence has lifted for United and finals contention is back on the agenda. “I’m happy because the players executed the game plan to perfection,” Rudan said. “I’ve got a lot of confidence and belief in this group.” Besart Berisha scored a double for Western United, while Alessandro Diamanti, Max Burgess and Connor Pain also found the back of the net. Ryan Scott impressed in goal for United, coming on as a substitute for the concussed Filip Kurto. Josh Risdon finished with three assists. Instead of going into this weekend’s bye counting down the days until the end of the season, Western United is buoyed by their recent form and ready to challenge for a finals berth in their final six games of the season.
