Four bin battle of the Bay By Goya Dmytryshchak Not everyone thinks Hobsons Bay’s new bin system is the fab four. The council’s Recycling 2.0 service was rolled out this month to reduce the amount of items going to landfi ll. Mayor Colleen Gates said the majority of feedback for the four-bin service had been “overwhelmingly positive” and most people understood the new system ensured the city’s recycling would indeed be recycled. However, there have been complaints about bins being audited, confusion over what goes in which bin, and odour and hygiene concerns. During public question time at last week’s council meeting, a member of the pubic asked
how the average household was expected to reduce its general waste down to 120 litres per fortnight. “Many years ago we went from 240-litres to 120-litres of garbage disposal per week,” he said. “At that time, it was clear that we needed to divert recycling to the yellow bins. “In Recycling 2.0, we have a reduction from 120 litres per week to 120 litres per fortnight. This reduction in general waste cannot be offset by diverting waste to the yellow bin as the plastic standard is stricter.” Plastic codes 3-7 and UHT/Tetra-Paks cannot be put in the yellow bins. Cr Gates said a recent recycling crisis had exposed a lack of local markets to recycle some materials.
In January 2018, China tightened restrictions on accepting imported waste, affecting those in the Australian recycling industry. Hobsons Bay was among more than 30 Victorian councils affected by last year’s subsequent collapse of waste contractor SKM Recycling. “Council has made the decision to do two critical things,” Cr Gates said. “First, we are taking glass out of our co-mingled recycling bin, which means the glass and all other co-mingled items will be recycled to a much higher quality product. “Second, we are only taking items in the co-mingled recycling bin for which there are genuine local recycling outcomes.” Cr Gates said the council would seek to
expand the products Hobsons Bay residents can recycle over time. “For many households, waste bins were not fi lled within a week under the old system and the new four-bin service should meet the needs of most households,” Cr Gates said. “However, we do recognise that one size does not fit all circumstances and we will continue to offer residents the option to upsize their waste bin or have an additional bin for a fee –something that has been in place prior to the introduction of Recycling 2.0.” She said the council was encouraging households to “give the new service a go, using all four bins provided, for the first six weeks, then review your needs in terms of bin sizes”.

Toxic fire site not insured: court By Benjamin Millar The state’s taxpayers are likely to foot the multimillion dollar clean-up bill for the site of the 2018 Tottenham chemical fire after a court ruled the site’s owner was uninsured at the time of the blaze. The warehouse where illegally dumped chemicals fuelled Melbourne’s biggest industrial blaze in almost 30 years is owned by Danbol Pty Ltd, whose sole director and shareholder is accountant Christopher James Baldwin.
A 12-month insurance policy covering the site expired on August 24, 2018, less than a week before the suspicious fire erupted. Representatives of Danbol and insurance company Swiss Re International traded a series of emails in the days ahead of the fire, discussing whether a new policy could be offered to cover the warehouse due to a change of use from timber recycling to empty gas canister storage. Swiss Re International had initially offered a 14-day extension of cover, but in a decision handed down earlier this month, Supreme Court Justice Peter Riordan ruled that Danbol
had failed to take the necessary steps to prove it held a binding contract with the insurer. The court heard that a final email accepting the 14-day policy extension was sent just hours after the blaze broke out at 5am on August 30. Danbol’s lawyers attempted to argue that the company had earlier “implicitly accepted” the policy extension until September 7, but Justice Riordan found the company had failed to take adequate steps to commit to a $3506 premium payment to take up the offer. WorkSafe last year took control of the site, where up to 10 million litres of chemicals that
escaped the fire still remain.While the clean-up has been estimated as likely to cost between $15 million and $35 million, a government spokeswoman said the final cost is unknown. Preparations for the clean-up are continuing, with a call for tenders closing on February 27. Security, air monitoring and stormwater containment remains in place at the site. Police arson investigators have been looking into the cause of the blaze and a coronial investigation into the fire is continuing, after it was deemed suspicious by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade.

Calombaris collapse: creditors meet

It’s part of the Taste of Vietnam Ao Dai Exhibition hosted by the Vietnamese Association in Hobsons Bay, running at Altona’s Louis Joel centre until Thursday, February 27. On Sunday, from 2-4pm, royal court music and food for the emperor will be presented by
the Bach Viet Dance Group. There will also be a traditional embroidery workshop. Association president Myly Nguyen said the event would reveal the best of a beautiful country with a long and rich history. “The event also aims to foster a strong sense of community, local pride and cultural identity by exhibition of the traditional Vietnamese cultural heritage,” she said. Ms Nguyen, who came to Australia from Vietnam alone by boat in 1981, was recently
named Hobsons Bay Citizen of the Year. She will exhibit the ao dai, or Vietnamese national garment, and give a presentation about the traditional customs of her homeland on Thursday, February 20, from 7-9pm. Creditors will meet on Thursday after the collapse of the food empire founded by celebrity chef George Calombaris. Craig Shepard and Leanne Chesser of KordaMentha Restructuring have been appointed voluntary administrators of 22 companies in Mr Calombaris’ Made Establishment Group. The group operates 12 restaurants and food venues in Melbourne, including Hotel Argentina in Williamstown, formerly Hellenic Hotel Williamstown. All venues except the Yo-Chi frozen yogurt chain have stopped trading. A total of 400 workers are affected. Employees have been paid all outstanding wages and superannuation up to the date of the appointment. The appointment followed declining trade across venues after the ailing business was battered by a major underpayment scandal. Last year, Made Establishment was ordered to make a $200,000 “contribution payment” under a deal with the Fair Work Ombudsman, for underpaying staff by $7.8 million. Mr Shepard said despite a major rebranding of a number of high-profile venues, including Hellenic Hotel Williamstown which relaunched as Hotel Argentina in December, the embattled hospitality group was unable to turn business around. Bicycles and baguettes The best five countries are France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and probably the Czech Republic, says author and poet Steven Herrick. The worst? Sadly, Australia and England in a tie. He’s speaking about touring Europe and Asia by bike, the subject of an author talk at Williamstown next month. Herrick’s latest book, Bicycles and baguettes, is part cycling adventure, part culinary safari. He and his wife Cathie get around on two bikes christened Jenny and Craig – “Jenny Craig, the best weight loss program known to man is two bicycles,” he quips. “France has lots of cycling infrastructure and many back roads through lovely villages,”
Herrick says. “There’s still country life in France so there’s villages with boulangeries so there’s always, always a chance for a baguette and a sandwich and a drink and a coffee.” Far from the French countryside with its chateaus is the south of England. Herrick says he doesn’t like to be disparaging about any country but … “The drivers tend to be extremely arrogant and careless and the food, while it has improved over 20 years, it’s still English food. A 34-year-old Yarraville woman has been arrested and remanded for stealing a car in Seddon. The woman, claiming to be a nurse, helped a 69-year-old man from a fall in Charles Street, allegedly stealing his wallet and car keys in the process. Police allege the woman stole the nearby car and used the stolen credit card at a number of retail outlets before being arrested and charged with theft of a motor vehicle and a number of deceptions. Parking inaction angers By Goya Dmytryshchak A Williamstown hotelier has blasted Hobsons Bay council for not yet responding to a petition from Nelson Place traders, which was submitted in 2018 and called for parking meter fees and times to be changed. Customs House Hotel owner Russell Marsh said traders had been suffering too long from the effect of high parking fees for 13 hours a day. Parking in Nelson Place – the only shopping strip in Hobsons Bay with meters – costs $3.70 per hour from 9am-10pm.

“Council’s main focus in 2020 will be the development of the parking strategy,” Cr Gates said. After the meeting, Mr Marsh said the council needed to address Williamstown traders’ concerns. “What do we care about the whole of the
city,” he said. “We’ve been asking for something to happen here for 10 years. For Christ’s sake, focus. We’re dying down here.” In 2015, the council trialled free parking in part of Nelson Place for three months from Monday to Thursday, losing up to $180,000 in estimated parking revenue, excluding fines.
African insights A series of workshops providing insight into what makes every one of Africa’s 54 countries unique will begin rolling out in Footscray this week. Presented by African-Australian Multicultural Employment and Youth Services (AAMEYS), the workshops are designed to help participants learn and understand more about the local African communities that have made the western suburbs of Melbourne their home. AAMEYS chief executive Dr Berhan Ahmed said representatives of the major local African nation communities will offer insights into their identity to help service providers and businesses better understand how to provide respectful services. “To provide respectful services is to understand the communities and their culture, family values, food, music etc,” he said. The first workshop will be held this Thursday and highlight the South Sudanese community. It will be presented by community leader Ring Mayar and his team. The workshop will begin with a traditional South Sudanese cultural meal, followed by musical entertainment and information sessions. Douglas Parade doesn’t have parking meters. “We’re losing tens of thousands of dollars worth of functions because they don’t want to deal with the parking out the front – they go elsewhere. “It’s just really unfair. We pay the most amount of rates in the whole of Hobsons Bay and we’re just losing so much money … the parking fees and hours are just horrific. The inequity is unbelievable.” Traders want paid parking hours to be changed to 12-5pm. Last week’s council meeting heard that officers were preparing a city-wide parking strategy. “Council has no plans to reduce hours or to reduce the cost of parking at this point in time,” mayor Colleen Gates said in response to a question Mr Marsh submitted.

School program raises a smile By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong students have a smile on their dials following the state government’s announcement the Smile Squad free dental program will be heading their way later this year. After launching in neighbouring Brimbank last year, the $322 million free dental care program is being expanded to include schools in Maribyrnong, Melton and Macedon Ranges, among others. Visiting Footscray High School last week to announce the expansion, acting Premier James Merlino and Health Minister
Jenny Mikakos said the Smile Squad vans will be visiting local public schools to provide free check-ups to students. Treatments will include teeth cleaning, fluoride application, fissure sealants and fillings, along with root canals and any other non-cosmetic treatments that are needed. More than 300 schools will be participating in 2020, extending free dental treatment to more than 100,000 extra students. By 2022 the program will provide examinations and dental treatment for more than 650,000 public school students every year. Ms Mikakos said tooth decay is more than
five times more common than asthma among children and a quarter of all Australian children have untreated tooth decay. “That’s why we’re providing free dental care for all Victorian public school students.” Footscray MP Katie Hall said dental conditions are Victoria’s highest single cause of preventable hospitalisations for children under 10. “When it comes to oral health care, early prevention is the key and the Smile Squad program is designed to set our kids up with healthy habits for the rest of their lives.” Details: smilesquad.vic.gov.au

Efforts to encourage more young people in the west to ride bikes are starting to head downhill. BikeWest president John Symons said 15 new Giant mountain bikes are being used by Footscray High to roll out a new mountain biking elective subject from this term, running on the nearby Quarry Park Mountain Bike Trails. The bikes have been purchased via a $10,000 grant from Maribyrnong council and $2000 contribution from western suburbs charity Western Wells. “We bought 15 pretty good mountain bikes, now Footscray High are the first local school to set up a mountain bike elective for Year nine students,” Mr Symons said. “They are learning mountain biking skills as well as bike maintenance; I think they will be doing things around health and nutrition as well. Youth struggle to be heard By Benjamin Millar Environmental concerns, mental health pressures and the toll taken by bullying have topped the list of worries for young people living in Maribyrnong, according to a new survey. Mission Australia’s 2019 Youth Survey Report, which surveyed young people aged between 15 to 19 years old, found 41 per cent of young people in Maribyrnong were worried about the environment, 38 per cent had mental health concerns and 29 per cent raised issues around equity and discrimination.
Their top four personal concerns related to coping with stress (49 per cent), school or study problems (41 per cent), mental health (38 per cent) and body image (37 per cent). Nearly one in four (23 per cent) young people in Maribyrnong reported that they had been bullied in the past 12 months. Of those, 83 per cent said it took place at school or in higher education and 44 per cent had experienced bullying online. Mission Australia’s Victoria state leader Michele Leonard said the results of the nationwide survey show young people are feeling overlooked despite being deeply

concerned about a range of issues. “The growing public dialogue and experience of issues, such as climate change concern, extreme weather events, bushfires and drought, are clearly affecting young people’s view of Australia,” she said. “A greater focus on prevention and early intervention is also needed. By investing in
programs that are proven to work, young people will have a better chance of reaching their potential.” On the positive side, 57 per cent of Maribyrnong respondents said they felt happy with their lives overall and 51 per cent were positive about the future. However the respondents raised concerns about their lack of say in important issues, with more than 90 per cent feeling that they didn’t always have a voice in public affairs. Ms Leonard said young people’s concerns must be heeded when policies that affect their lives and their futures are being formed.

This project is one out of the box By Benjamin Millar A project exploring the many ways to be a man has been breaking down traditional walls that work to box people in. As part of Project Momentum, VU social worker and academic Shelley Hewson-Munro has been recording men of different ages and cultural backgrounds about unhelpful notions of what makes a “real man”, many of which contribute to the normalisation of violence against women. The collected recordings are housed in The Man Box, an installation piece launched at
VU’s O Fest at Footscray Park this week. Constructed by VU Sunshine students, The Man Box features recorded voices of men playing on a loop. Victoria University sports officer Wade Spencer, a project participant, hopes it gives people food for thought about any prejudices that may be at play in their own attitudes. “One of those comments you would hear growing up was “you kick like a girl”, which was acceptable in those days, but now it’s horrible,” he said. “I’m friends with a lot of those AFLW girls and they can kick a lot further than I can.” Mr Spencer said he works closely with
hundreds of students as part of his role and has been heartened by some of the change in attitude he has seen in recent years. “We see AFLW getting bigger and bigger, there is a lot more respect for female athletes, but at the same time we need to take more steps to make it a better environment.” Mr Spencer said not all attitutes have changed for the better and he is “tormented” by some of the derogatory comments he still hears about women athletes on social media. Mr Spencer said it is up to men to challenge other men about what they might be saying or doing, in a way that is not too confrontational.
Performing for change Renowned Indian dancer, storyteller and activist Mallika Sarabhai will be exploring the complex relationship between women and Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy in a performance in Footscray this week. The director of the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts and a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, Sarabhai will be drawing on multimedia, theatre, music and dance for her performance SVA Kranti: The Revolution Within, as part of Asia TOPA 2020, the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Performing Arts. Sarabhai’s piece conjures an imagined conversation with Mahatma Gandhi through the prism of a 21st century woman, aiming to challenge the relevance of Gandhi’s teachings to the contemporary female experience. Creating and performing both classical and contemporary works, Sarabhai first made her mark as a film actress before being recognised
as an exceptional young dancer in the classical forms of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. Sarabhai soon began using her work for social change, pushing for improvements in education, human rights and women’s empowerment. Following the performance, Sarabhai will join artist-curator Nithya Nagarajan for a discussion about her unique brand of ‘artivism’, her dance practice and her politics. Fine reforms ‘failing’ The western suburbs’ leading community legal centre is calling for an overhaul around the way fines are handled for the state’s most vulnerable people. The state government has asked the Fines Reform Advisory Board to provide advice on how the fines system has been working since reforms took effect at the start of 2018. In a submission to the consultation process, WEstjustice (the Western Community Legal Centre) called for sweeping changes to the handling of fines for young people, people on low incomes and those with disabilities or experiencing poor mental health. “People on low incomes who are experiencing poor mental health are particularly vulnerable to high levels of debt, including fines,” the submission states. It notes that poor mental health places people at greater risk of fines, while fines can exacerbate pre-existing mental health conditions and trigger new ones. “For people experiencing poverty and/ or mental illness, fines have the potential to be enormously stressful and crushing, tipping some people over the edge and destroying hope.” The submission suggests that the reforms introduced in 2018 have not lived up to their promise, in fact creating “significant failings” within the fines system. It also calls for the special circumstances test to be made accessible to more vulnerable people. Benjamin Millar

A contingent from Spotswood Football Netball Club travelled to the bushfire-ravaged East Gippsland town of Lake Tyers at the weekend to help rebuilding efforts. Rather than complete their standard pre-season training camp, about 40 players wanted to make a real difference on the ground, said former Gippslander and current Woodsman Jason Marks. Marks contacted an ex-teammate, Lakes Entrance coach Tom Smith, to see where the club could help. Smith mentioned the Wairewa property, destroyed by fire, of Lakes Entrance junior football coach Matt Zagami. Lake Tyers local Grant Hall organised a schedule for the club to help with the rebuild efforts, with new Spotswood recruit Nick Green and his building company, Oko Group, providing tools and equipment. The Woodsmen stayed at Lake Tyers Camp and Caravan Park, and spent up at the tavern, local bakeries and grocery stores. “It was just sort of surreal,” Marks said. “No one really understood how much devastation there was in the area. “It was quite shocking really to get there and see the amount of damage that had happened everywhere around for kilometres on end. “We went to one of the local pubs the Saturday night and we had locals coming up to us saying, ‘we heard you’re from Spotswood, we thank you so much for what you’re doing for our community’,” Marks said. “That’s the beauty of local clubs and local sports – it’s not always about the actual sport that you’re taking part in, it’s being part of the wider community of people that can get together and help each other in different times.”

MY PLACE Altona Meadows’ Michael Tabone loves American muscle cars and has fond memories of growing up in Altona. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? I’ve been living here all my life – I’m 47 years old now so I’ve been here since day one, since I’ve been born.

What do you like about Altona Meadows and surrounds? I just love it around here. It’s quiet, it’s peaceful. It’s next to the water. It’s not far from the city. Because I grew up here, it’s a bit of a comfort zone for me as well. What could be improved or changed? I think Altona’s improved completely. I don’t think I’d change anything about, I think it’s great the way it is now. It’s actually getting better and better. What are some of your favourite memories growing up in this area? I used to love Pier Street years ago. I used to go to the old Noonan’s bakery back then. It used to be my favourite place to go to get my meat pies and sausage rolls. I used to love playing footy across the road from where my mum lives now, still. I used to play footy for Altona City footy club, and tennis as well. I used to love my sports when I was younger. So, I just used to love all those simple things.
What’s your favourite place to eat out or have coffee? Me and my wife love going to Pier 71 in Altona. The girl that works there, Laura, the owner, she always looks after us. We love going there, it’s nice and relaxing. The food’s good, the coffee’s good. Can you tell me about your passion for cars? I grew up with old muscle cars so I’ve always loved old cars. Since I first got my licence, I
started off with Fords, so big V8s, and the older I got the more appreciation I got for older cars such as an old classic Mustang. I love my old Mustangs. Your beloved 1965 Mustang GT coupe recently won a trophy from the Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed Motoring and Engineering Group … I entered the car in a competition on Australia Day. I entered unexpectedly – I just saw the
cars there and thought I’d enter it and I ended up winning it, surprisingly. It’s one of the first Mustangs – in ’64, they first came out. It’s been fully restored. The interior, I left it pretty much original. They obviously looked after the interior. It’s a hobby for me now. I love driving it. Is there anything people would be surprised to know about you? I got married.

By Lance Jenkinson Altona Magic coach Goran Lozanovski was seething about two decisions which meant his team finished a deflating 2-0 NPL Victoria season-opener to Hume City on Saturday night with nine men. Lozanovski branded the decisions leading to the dismissals of Magic players Maarten Hemmen and Nicholas Sette as “soft”. Hemmen’s second yellow card was awarded for a dive, though it appeared as though there was contact made on him inside the box. Sette received two yellow cards in a matter of seconds, one for approaching the referee in a confrontational manner, the other for comments made while walking away. Lozanovski was dumbfounded by the decision not to award Hemmen a penalty and has called on NPL referees to consult with their assistant referees before making the big decision of sending a player off. “At least have a conversation to your officials on the sidelines, your fourth official and just say hey, this is what I saw, what do you think?” Lozanovski said. “Let’s get a second opinion before you make that call [to send a player off ].” On the Sette sending off, Lozanovski conceded it was not so clear-cut, but he is asking for match officials to have a thicker skin when dealing with emotional players. “He got a yellow card for confronting the referee,” Lozanovski said. “When he walked away, from my discussion with Nicholas, him being a young man said in a smart alec way, ‘well done, onya’, and he [the ref] couldn’t handle that, took offence to that and he sent him off. “You have to understand the player’s frustration in the moment.” While they spent a large chunk of the game two men down, Altona Magic never waved the white flag. The Magic kept fighting towards an equaliser in the second half, but spending so long on the back foot took its toll. They were spent by game’s end and Steven Hewitt took full advantage for Hume City with a goalscoring double. Lozanovski was heartened by the determination from his Magic team. “We have to pay some respect to the boys who were left on the park and really worked hard to make sure we didn’t cop a flogging,” he said. “I think the boys were courageous, really dug deep. It will put us in good stead because there were a lot of positives to come out of that game.” Altona will be better for the 90 minutes.
Rudan shielded Imai from criticism. “I’m not going to have a go at him,” he said. “Ultimately it was his mistake that you could talk about, but it was his first game, his debut for the club.” Alessandro Diamanti and Valentino Yuel provided some energy for Western United off the bench in the second half. Jerry Skotadis was outstanding in defensive midfield in the first half, while Oskar Dillon continued his solid work in defence alongside veteran Andrew Durante. The best chance of the second half came off a beautiful cross from Diamanti to striker Besart Berisha, who put his header wide. It was a frustrating day at the office for Western United. United will need to dust itself off quickly with a short turnaround for its clash with Wellington Phoenix in Wellington on Friday night.
Western Bulldogs are licking their wounds after enduring one of the toughest outings in their AFLW history. The Bulldogs were battered from pillar to post in the wet at the VU Whitten Oval on Friday night by Melbourne. The signs were bad for the Bulldogs early in the 20-point loss when Melbourne kicked the first two goals. Even a late goal from Deanna Berry, from point blank range after a 50-metre penalty, could not provide the spark the Bulldogs needed. Melbourne came out in the second quarter and dominated the play, taking a 12-point lead into half-time. Any chance Western Bulldogs had in the game evaporated in the third quarter with Melbourne kicking out to a 26-point three quarter-time lead. Aisling McCarthy was the prime ball winner for the Bulldogs with 15 disposals to go with eight tackles. Ellie Blackburn was hard-at-it with 13 disposals and six tackles, while Gabby Newton was the pick of the rookies with 11 possessions and six tackles.

The Magic experienced a high volume of player turnover in the off season and it will take time for it all to click. “We are, pretty much, a brand new side,” Lozanovski said. “It will take us a few weeks to get better at what we do.” Altona will host Avondale in its first home game of the season on Saturday evening, but not in the familiar surrounds of the Paisley Park Soccer Complex. The Magic have been forced to relocate
the game to Stead Park in Geelong while the Paisley Park clubrooms are upgraded. It will be a hugely important game for both sides, with the Magic desperate to get their first win and Avondale just trying to reach a zero points tally after beginning the season minus-three after a Football Victoria sanction for breaching a licence agreement. “It will be two good football teams trying to get their first win for the year,” Lozanovski said.
Maidstone United cracked open a six-pack in the first round of qualifying for the FFA Cup. The Tony Trifunov-coached United smashed RMIT 6-1 in the rain at RMIT Bundoora Sports Centre on Saturday. Kristian Kis led the way with a double for United, while Adam Baker, Daniel Markovski, Davide Cristian and Sebastian Kis also scored. Trifunov was delighted with the way Maidstone United performed in its first competitive hit-out of the year. His team wasted no time getting into a groove with four of the six goals coming in a blistering first half. “We went into the game with a strong game plan and the team carried it out perfectly,” Trifunov said. Hoppers Crossing teen on target for big career

Georgia Pistone has embraced the pressure of international shooting competition and underlined her potential as a future star in the sport. The 16-year-old from Hoppers Crossing turned heads with an impressive season in 2019, highlighted by her 12th-placed finish in the universal trench world championships against open-age opponents in France. She also took out a bronze medal in a team’s event. Pistone was understandably a little bit nervous about competing on the international stage, but she was certainly not overawed once she pulled her first trigger at the competitions. “It was nerve-racking going over there and representing Australia, but it feels good,” Pistone said. “There is a little bit of pressure, but you have to learn to deal with it. When I wear my
Australian jacket at competitions, I’m proud wearing it.” Pistone is eager to crack into the world top 10 this year. The Werribee Victorian Clay Target Club member has set her sights on representing Australia at the worlds again, this year in Italy. She is on track halfway through qualification, but still needs two big rounds to earn selection. “It will be the top three ladies selected, so I have to put in a good performance in the next two rounds,” Pistone said. “Where we’re shooting, I shoot well, so I’m pretty confident.” The other high priority event for Pistone in 2020 is the national championships. She is the defending Australian champion, so the rest of the field will be aiming to bring her down. “I’d love to go back-to-back,” Pistone said. Pistone earned an Oceania gold medal with
Australia B in the ISSF Olympic trap. The achievements only come Pistone’s way because she is willing to work hard, even though she is busy completing her studies at Hoppers Crossing Secondary College. “There’s a lot of training,” she said. “I’m always down at Werribee practicing. “It’s repetition, I shoot about 100 targets and I’m always repeating the same thing and having the same style. I love it.” Pistone is the Don Deeble Sports Star for February. Basketball Yarraville basketball prodigy Josh Giddey looks set to make his Australian Boomers debut this week. Giddey, a versatile guard-forward out of the Centre of Excellence, has been included on the 12-man Boomers roster for FIBA Asia Cup 2021 qualifiers. The 17-year-old will travel to Brisbane for games this week against New Zealand on Thursday night and Hong Kong on Sunday. Giddey took part in the Basketball Without Borders global camp in Chicago at the weekend.

Grubb has big impact By Lance Jenkinson Altona all-rounder James Grubb is proving to be one of the best value-add acquisitions to a Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association team this summer. The A’s have gone from a premiership challenger to the team to beat, with Grubb being a significant influencer over the team’s trajectory. With bat and ball, Grubb has been prominent, but it is his consistency in both that has stood out. After a stellar first half of the season, the 24-year-old has continued his strong form after the Christmas break. “The biggest thing for me was consistency,” Grubb said. “I wanted to back it up for the second half of the season. I think I’ve been able to do that. “Hopefully I can transfer that into the last two games and the finals when it matters.” Grubb is a mere 17 runs short of 500 in his first season back at Altona. Only Williamstown star Brent McMinn (500) has produced more runs this summer. After three years with Footscray in the Premier Cricket, Grubb has come back a much
better batsman than when he left the A’s after the 2015-16 season. The Hoppers Crossing resident has relished his chance to bat at No. 5 for the A’s this season. He enjoys the different challenges he faces on a game-to-game basis. “It’s good knowing during the week where I’m going to be batting,” Grubb said. “I can prepare for any situation. If I come in at 3-20, I am prepared, if we’re 3-160, I can prepare for that as well. “It’s good that I’ve got that flexibility to play a different role in a sense and just play to the match situation.” Grubb has also churned out big spells with the ball for Altona. Knocking on the door of the top 10 wicket takers in the competition, Grubb has taken 19 wickets at 18.2. Just like with his batting, Grubb is able to bowl to suit the team’s needs. “My role sort of changes with the ball from one-day and two-day cricket,” he said. “I’ve been picking up the new pill the last few games, which has been really good. “With one-day cricket, I haven’t had to bowl much because we’ve been really good.” Altona is six points clear on top of the ladder

Grubb is looking forward to facing Yarraville, a side that is one of the A’s main rivals. “Altona-Yarraville has been a pretty big rivalry ever since I’ve played,” Grubb said. “I can’t imagine it will be any different next week. “We back ourselves in a bit more with the red ball stuff, but if we want to show we’re a top of the table team, we’ve got to prove it this week against them.” Having lost two of their three games since the Christmas break – their only two losses of the season – Altona is not hitting the panic button. “We’re pretty confident in our ability,” Grubb said. “We’ve got five guys sitting around the 300-mark for the season, which is fantastic, so everyone is contributing and I’m sure it will be no different come finals’ time. “It’s still one of those leagues where anyone can beat anyone on their day.” The first day of Williamstown’s clash with Bayswater was also washed out and will revert to a one-day game this Saturday.
Bowls Yarraville-Footscray took a significant step towards survival in the Bowls Victoria premier division. The relegation-threatened Bulldogs caused a boilover in beating Essendon 79-74 on Saturday. It moves the Bulldogs 11 points clear of second-last Caulfield Park with three rounds to play. Finals-bound Altona rolled Caulfield Park 90-73 away on Saturday.
Baseball Williamstown Wolves remain on top of the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 ladder after the dust settled on an epic three-game series with Werribee Giants. All three games in the series were decided by one run, with the Giants taking games one (8-7) and two (2-1) before the Wolves won game three (13-12).
