Relax with reggae beats Thousands are expected to flock to this month’s Melbourne Splash Festival on the Williamstown waterfront for nine hours of reggae sounds. Chill out with an epic stage line-up that includes international acts Nyanda of Brick & Lace and Anthony B from Jamaica.Other festival favourites are Alariiya, Marvin Priest, SK Simeon, Yaw Faso, Lamine Sonko and the African Intelligence. Festival organiser Edmond Kolle said the multicultural event was family-friendly with free kids’ activities and children aged 10 and under admitted free. “We have a different range of music,” he said. “This is not just an African festival … we are trying to bring our cultures together.” Food trucks Tasty Suya and Angies Kitchen will be offering African street food, while Dum and Dumpling’s big yellow bus and The Taco Station will offer other international flavours. Gold coin donations and a portion of each of up to 5000 tickets sold will go towards bushfire relief. ‘Sin bins’ left on footpath Hobsons Bay council officers are conducting audits of bins put out for kerbside collection, slapping stickers on those containing unaccepted items and refusing to collect them. It follows this month’s roll-out of the council’s four-bin recycling service, comprising new food and garden waste and glass bins in addition to existing garbage and recycling bins. Non-compliant light green-lidded bins were last week slapped with a sticker stating: “Your food and garden waste bin wasn’t collected because it contains …” This was followed by one or more ticks next to a list of unacceptable items including compostable and biodegradable bags, pet droppings, food containers and packaging,

nappies and wipes, logs larger than 30 centimetres, metal, glass, plastic, cardboard, coffee pods, teabags, ash and soil. Yellow-lidded recycling bins are also being checked. Some items that previously went in the yellow bin will no longer be accepted. The council’s website states: “Hobsons Bay is partnering with a local processor that has strict, high standards for what it can and can’t recycle locally.” Unaccepted items include milk cartons, coated or waxed coffee cups and plastic codes 3 to 7. Mayor Colleen Gates said the audits of bins would be carried out for the next six weeks. “For those households who received a sticker and didn’t get their bin emptied, council will send a truck within two business days to empty

the bin and the resident can work on getting it right for the next time,” she said. “Council will not be able to continue sending a spare truck to collect non-compliant bins and households may be asked in future to take contaminants out of their bin in order to have them collected. “Often, the wrong items in bins can contaminate the whole truck.” Star Weekly last week reported residents were concerned about health issues because bin liners were banned in the food bins. In response, the council on Sunday said “after double checking with our food and garden waste contractors that they can manage the volume they have advised us they will accept one or two layers of newspaper or paper towel” used to wrap food waste.

Williamstown resident Jenny Toon said other councils successfully allowed compostable bin liners. “I have come from the City of Greater Bendigo where we have very successfully operated a green bin system, collected fortnightly, using bright green compostable bin liners,” she said. “This system has won wide acclaim and reduced rubbish landfill.” Altona North resident Maria Boni said she was concerned less items could be recycled under the new system. “Only symbols 1 and 2 can be recycled and all the others go into the rubbish,” she said. “I work for a food-packaging company and our trays and tubs are symbol 5, which are recyclable – but we cannot do that. Anger over road group’s demise By Benjamin Millar Residents bracing for an expected doubling of truck traffic along their streets have slammed the state government’s decision to fold a working group set up to help address the impact. The Save Willy Road and Don’t Destroy Millers Road groups were part of the Millers Road and Williamstown Road Corridor Study group, set up to make recommendations on potential steps to tackle the predicted sharp

increase in truck traffic along those roads following the completion of the West Gate Tunnel in 2022. State Planning Minister Richard Wynne announced the study as part of his final approval of the tunnel project, in the wake of growing concern by residents living along those corridors that truck bans on other roads would funnel thousands more trucks past their doors. But the Department of Transport this month terminated the group, effective immediately. It follows the collapse of the ‘Maribyrnong

Cleaner Freight Initiative’, reported last week by Star Weekly, killing off a groundbreaking partnership between industry and community. Working group member Meredith Kennedy said they last met in July 2019, at which point new terms of reference were being drafted. No further meetings were scheduled and group members were emailed earlier this month to be told it was being dissolved. “We spent a significant amount of time engaging,� she said. Ms Kennedy said the termination email made reference to an impasse

over night-time curfews on Williamstown Road, but otherwise gave no clear reason for the group being disbanded. The members were told that providing curfews on Millers and Williamstown roads would place too much pressure on Grieve Parade, which is Hobsons Bay council’s preferred truck route. Ms Kennedy said the most obvious solution would be upgrading Grieve Parade and directly connecting it with the West Gate Freeway. The state government was contacted for comment.

Medical tattoos to ease anguish Three breast cancer survivors who would like to receive medical tattooing are being sought by a Newport woman requiring volunteers. Rita Vinci, who lost a cousin to the disease, was spurred to change careers to help others by training to become an areola paramedic. “I’ve been looking at it for three years,� she said. “I know a lot of people that have had breast cancer so I wanted to do something more positive. “I have an auntie that’s got breast cancer and her sister died of cancer at the age of 42.�

Instead of using tissue to rebuild a nipple after breast reconstruction surgery, some survivors choose to have a 3D tattoo to create a hyperrealistic areola. “It looks real and it makes the person feel complete,â€? Ms Vinci said. “You know, yourself – you look at your breast, imagine having no nipples there. “With nipple tattooing, it won’t get rid of the scar ‌ but it will blend it in more. “It’s helping people, and I won’t be charging $1000 because I just think it’s a ‘rich people’s

disease’ because not everyone can afford it.� Ms Vinci, who is a committee member of the annual Walk a Mile in my Shoes fundraising walk for mental health in Williamstown, is required to perform the tattoo procedure to complete her training. Children and parents on their way to school will have a safer journey from next month with the installation of new pedestrian fences along a busy Yarraville truck route. New fencing will be installed at the intersection of Francis Street and Wembley Avenue, improving safety for the hundreds of children and parents walking to and from nearby Wembley Primary School. The intersection has long been identified as a potential danger spot, with thousands of trucks travelling along Francis Street each day. In 2016, residents fi nally won a decades-long fight for red light and speed cameras to be installed at the intersection, after a 13-day study by VicRoads recorded 219 drivers running red lights and 16 speeding at the intersection. Trucks were also banned from Francis Street between 8-9.30am and 2.30-4pm, unless travelling to local destinations. A 24-hour truck ban will also be introduced along Francis Street once the West Gate Tunnel opens in 2022. Announcing the new pedestrian barriers last Friday, Williamstown MP Melissa Horne said the state government is aiming to strike a balance between the needs of inner west residents and the long-term viability of the freight network. A Victorian transport company has been fined for illegally storing toxic hospital waste used in cancer treatment at its Altona depot. Environment Protection Authority officers uncovered two shipping containers of waste at Melbourne Container Transport’s Kororoit Creek Road premises. The company was fined more than $8000 for depositing industrial waste at a site not licensed to accept it. The containers had plastic-wrapped pallet loads of cardboard boxes and plastic containers carrying surgical masks, gowns, gloves and other items used by doctors when applying cytotoxic chemicals used in some cancer treatments.

Major roadworks put on hold By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council has deferred permanent safety repairs to a major Altona Meadows arterial for eight months so the “community is not further inconvenienced”. It comes as state government roadworks cause major traffic disruptions in and around Hobsons Bay. Under this year’s council budget, major roadworks were slated for Merton Street near Melbourne Ballpark – home to baseball and softball in Victoria.

These works started before Christmas and the remainder were originally planned for this month. However, mayor Colleen Gates said it would be deferred until September in light of traffic disruptions caused by the nearby Queen Street bridge upgrade undertaken by the state

government. “In the lead up to September, we will conduct regular road inspections and undertake temporary repairs as needed to ensure the road remains safe for drivers,” she said. As reported by Star Weekly last week, Queen Street bridge works are causing massive delays on the main arterial between Hobsons Bay and Wyndham, adding to gridlocks caused by West Gate Tunnel works. The bridge, built in 1969, is being strengthened to cope with up to 20,000 vehicles a day.

One lane will be closed on the bridge with the speed limit reduced from 70km/h to 40km/h until May 22. Council roadworks to Merton Street include road widening, footpath repair, new kerbs and channels, asphalt resurfacing and line marking. Future works will see the reconstruction of Merton Street north of the baseball stadium up to Harcourt Road. A Major Road Projects Victoria spokesperson had blamed Queen Street delays on external factors “including breakdowns and crashes”.

Wetlands in the spotlight People are being invited to post photos of Hobsons Bay’s flora and fauna under hashtag #hobsonsbaywetlands as part of a council Instagram campaign. Mayor Colleen Gates said the initiative aimed to raise awareness of the municipality’s biodiversity and the significance of natural habitat. “It is estimated that thousands of birds have lost their lives and their habitat as a result of the bushfires in Eastern Victoria, including many rare and endangered birds,” she said. “It is now even more imperative that we protect the habitat we have left to support the birds which shelter on our shores. “We’re encouraging residents to share photos of the wildlife and plant life they know and love. “Initiatives like this will help to remind us how lucky we are to have such incredible biodiversity in Hobsons Bay and so close to the

city.” Last year, the council prohibited dogs from a sandbar that formed over the mouth of Laverton Creek at the western end of Altona beach. The Laverton Creek spit conservation area has extended the habitat area of Cheetham Wetlands, which is internationally recognised under the Ramsar environmental treaty and home to more than 200 bird species. Hobsons Bay attracts critically endangered migratory birds from as far as Siberia and Alaska, while the pelican is the city’s logo. Playground petition draws action By Benjamin Millar A popular Footscray playground that has been closed to the public since last year because of safety concerns could be repaired and reopened within weeks. Residents last week started on online petition calling on the Western Bulldogs football club to reopen the Spurling Reserve playground at Whitten Oval, after being told by the club it would be closed “indefi nitely”. The playground is situated on Maribyrnong council land on Barkly Street, but is

maintained by the Bulldogs. The playground has been closed since last December after being deemed unsafe following an inspection of damaged play equipment. The petition – signed by more than 400 people by Tuesday – called on the football club to expedite the necessary repairs and reopen the playground. “Council have indicated there was vandalism that the Bulldogs needed to clean up. The Western Bulldogs have provided no commitment to complete this and reopen it,” it stated.

The petition was launched by resident Paige Stokes, a mother of two who regularly takes her children to the playground to play. Ms Stokes said the playground, which was originally donated by the Lions Club, is well designed and the only publicly accessible play space in the vicinity. “We went down to go there before Christmas and it was suddenly closed,” she said. “I contacted the Bulldogs and I’ve been following up for six weeks and they finally said that it’s closed indefinitely and they are unable to confirm if and when it will reopen.”

In a club statement provided to Star Weekly, the Western Bulldogs said they had recently uncovered some concerns with the state of some of the equipment in the playground. “In the interests of public safety, the club temporarily closed the playground and is taking steps to perform the necessary maintenance,” it said. “The playground is expected to be reopened in the coming weeks, as soon as the maintenance work is completed and it is deemed safe for the public to access.”

Race honours a sailor By Goya Dmytryshchak More than 30 boats from Hobsons Bay Yacht Club are expected to race to Wyndham Harbour in the Vice Commodores Cup, including Paul Neilson in his late father’s vessel. The race is part of the John Neilson series, named in honour of the respected HBYC sailor who died in June, 2018. Club vice commodore Paul Neilson will compete in the boat, De Ja Blue. “Dad was sailing for a good 40 years,” Mr Neilson said. “He had De Ja Blue for about 30 years of that and he pretty much won every race in Victoria – both ocean races and bay races.

Haze link to heart health By Goya Dmytryshchak Bushfire smoke haze may increase the number of cardiac arrests and other heart problems across Victoria and further afield, according to new research. Williamstown’s Anjali Haikerwal, whose doctorate examined health impacts of the 2006-07 Victorian bushfires, found that just two days of exposure to small particulate matter (PM2.5) was associated with increased risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests and hospital admissions for cardiovascular problems. Microscopic PM2.5 pollution is about a third the width of a human hair, or smaller than a speck of dust, and is inhaled straight into the lungs and bloodstream. “These particles may act as a trigger factor for acute cardiovascular events; therefore it’s important not to delay seeking medical help if you experience symptoms of heart problems during smoke episodes from bushfires,” Dr Haikerwal said. Using statewide data from the Victorian Ambulance Cardiac Arrest Registry and Department of Health and Human Services, Dr Haikerwal found a nearly seven per cent increase in out-of-hospital cardiac arrests and about two per cent increase in emergency department visits and hospitalisations for acute cardiac events. People aged 65 and over and men were the most vulnerable. Her findings were published in the prestigious Journal of the American Heart Association. She said more research was needed into medium to long-term health impacts of smoke exposure from intense bushfires burning for days and weeks as witnessed recently. “It’s very unprecedented at present –

the smoke haze which has lingered on in Melbourne and neighbouring places and Victoria for days,” Dr Haikerwal said. “In recent weeks, most parts of Australia have been shrouded in bushfire smoke for days with very poor to hazardous air quality

– high levels of small particulate matter PM2.5 – reported in many cities and towns. “And the most important thing is the levels of these harmful particulate matter – they have been in the atmosphere for weeks now and at levels which are very harmful to a human body.”

Mum’s safety warning An Altona mother is warning others to be on alert after her 11-year-old son was followed home from school by a man in a white van. Afrodita Isai said the incident happened after 3pm on Friday, January 31, but her son told her five days later and she reported the matter to Altona North police and Altona College. Her son told her he left the school via the Medford Street exit and turned into Lindwood Avenue towards his nearby home. A man driving what appeared to be an old white Ford Transit van drove alongside him in Lindwood Avenue and into Fenfield Street. “He said the van just slowed right down to his walking pace,” Ms Isai said. “He said, basically, when he stopped the van stopped. “He said he actually ran backwards to try and trick him and … he reversed the van to follow him. Then he started running forwards and walking forwards again … [the driver] was more or less mimicking his moves.” She said the driver appeared to be “spooked” when several other cars came along and “sped off quickly”. The driver was described as Caucasian, wearing reading glasses and in his 40s or 50s. Detective Sergeant Robert Briz, of the Hobsons Bay Crime Investigation Unit, said police were investigating. “I’d encourage parents to educate their kids with the appropriate course of action if they have any concerns,” he said. One of Melbourne’s largest residential redevelopments has reached a milestone with the completion of the 15-level first residential stage of the Live City project at Footscray. When the founding member of the Footscray Trugo Club first built their home courts on a small strip of Buckley Street, little could they have known that 80 years later the sport would be thriving. The club’s courts at 139 Buckley Street were officially opened on February 12, 1940, hosting almost seven decades of the uniquely local sport before the collapse of the club in 2009 because of dwindling membership. The courts languished in overgrown disrepair until given a makeover in 2017 after a group of locals hatched the idea of reforming. Footscray Trugo Club’s Justin Mansfield said the club will be celebrating the 80th anniversary of its site this Sunday with a derby between its two teams (the Gumnuts and the Doughnuts)

MY PLACE Visiting Maddern Square to inspect a recent makeover, former mayor Fred Maddern – after whom the square is named – reflects on his years of dedication to his beloved Footscray. He speaks with Benjamin Millar. What is your connection with Footscray? I am a lifelong resident who has been residing in the family home for 82 years. What do you love most about the area? The community lifestyle, which since post war 1945 has welcomed and accepted residents from all corners of the world, embracing their lifestyle into a hitherto predominately Anglo Saxon community. What are your favourite local places? Wherever possible the Yarraville Club, or the former Jimmy Wongs on Barkly Street was also a pleasant dining experience, as well as the diverse range of Vietnamese and Asian restaurants.

Changing community attitudes of Footscray, from a major industrial suburb into a desirable residential suburb enhanced by the charm of the Yarraville village and Seddon. What are you most proud of achieving during your time as a local councillor and mayor? The CBD masterplan, with the first shopping mall created in Australia – including the square subsequently named after me. Creation of the Stony Creek lineal park, from the hitherto derelict wasteland, and formation of the Western Region Commission which was later succeeded by LeadWest.

What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you? I was president of the world-famous Footscray Yarraville City Band for 19 years, yet never played an instrument in my life.

Students set for a summer with a difference Three students in their penultimate year of study recently joined the Altona refinery team, participating in Mobil’s Vacation Student program. Kurt and Wayne, both from Curtin University, are working with the process engineering team at Altona refinery on ways to improve the efficiency of processes and increase production rates. Keegan, from Monash University is working with the environment team on reducing emissions from our wastewater treatment process. “I was drawn to ExxonMobil due to the fact it has a full portfolio of oil and gas assets within Australia, from offshore, through to manufacturing, terminals and product marketing, said Kurt. “I value diversity and opportunity and these are two things I felt I would get from working at Altona refinery.” Wayne chose to apply for a placement with the company because “ExxonMobil has an admirable reputation for being a world-leading energy producer.” “It was a chance to experience working for an organization with a vast global network and a variety of operations, which provides opportunities for diverse experiences during my vacation placement,” said Wayne. Altona Refinery Manager, Riccardo Cavallo, said that the vacation student program was invaluable to Altona refinery’s operations. “Not only does the vacation student program expose us to a whole new pool of potential future employees, but more importantly, the students bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to our workplace,” said Riccardo.

SPORT Bulldogs begin Burke era with win over Saints Western Bulldogs have made a promising start under new coach Nathan Burke in the AFL Women’s competition. The Bulldogs went to Burke’s former home St Kilda, where he played 323 games and won three best-and-fairests in the AFL, and returned with an impressive 25-point win in the first competitive game at Moorabbin since 1992. It was a quick kill by the Bulldogs on the Saints, one of the AFLW’s new expansion sides. The Bulldogs ran rampant in the first quarter, booting four goals to one to lead by 19 points. When Bailey Hunt kicked her first goal in the second quarter to add to the lead, there would be no stopping the Bulldogs. The Dogs remained in control throughout, even if St Kilda became more threatening the longer the game went on. Bonnie Toogood started the game like a house on fire for the Bulldogs, kicking two

first quarter goals. Toogood has taken the spot vacated by former captain Katie Brennan, who defected to Richmond in the summer. The 22-year-old Toogood will be looking to be the focal point of the Bulldogs forward line in 2020. There was a lot to like about the Bulldogs on the whole. Ellie Blackburn, skippering the team for the first time, was a cut above any other midfielder on the ground. Blackburn was a ball magnet, finding possession in traffic and ensuring any supposed 50-50 contests turned into a win for her side. Kirsty Lamb bulldozed her way through packs in typical style, while Naomi Ferres set the tone with her physicality, twice having to be helped to her feet after brave acts. Whenever St Kilda did threaten inside their forward 50, it was repelled by a Bulldogs brick wall provided by Isabel Huntington and

Lauren Spark. Both defenders thrived under the aerial ball. While the game turned into a defensive scrap in the second half, it will be remembered for some impressive debuts. Altona takes down arch-rival Altona makes no secret of the joy it gets out of beating Melbourne in the Bowls Victoria premier division. The long-time rivals have been involved in some classic matches over the years and Saturday’s game was another interesting chapter. Aces clinch first ABL title By Lance Jenkinson The title drought is over for the Melbourne Aces. For the first time in franchise history, the Aces stand on top of the mountain as the Australian Baseball League champions. The Claxton Shield will return to Victoria for a record-extending 23rd time. Victory was achieved with a 2-0 championship series sweep over Adelaide Giants. It was a wild series at times. It literally nearly came to blows between the two sets of players at one point. Cooler heads prevailed and it will best be remembered for excellence on the diamond. In his acceptance speech, Aces manager Jon Deeble acknowledged the opposition and how hard they made his side work to get their hands on the famous shield. “Every time we played you, you battled your arses off,” Deeble said.

“You’re a really tough team to beat. “We were still panicking in the ninth inning [of game two]. “You guys never give up. “You’ve got a young team, we’ve been on that other side a couple of years ago and we know it hurts, but you guys have got an outstanding team.” The scene was set for a tasty series in a fiery game one in Melbourne on Friday night. It was a game that had it all: a streaker, a bench clearing altercation and a walk-off run. The Aces prevailed 4-3 in a tight and tense game at the Melbourne Ballpark. Allan de San Miguel, featuring in his last series for the Aces before retiring to local baseball, blasted the ball to left field for the game tying run in the ninth. RAM truck conversion success By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring The 5000th RAM truck has rolled off the production line in Melbourne. The Granite Crystal grey 1500 V8 Hemi Laramie is one of the team that has the brilliant catchline of “Eat utes for breakfast”. The very American RAM range is very varied; light duty (1500) and heavy duty (3500 and 2500). They can tow anything from 3.5 tonnes up to 6.9 tonnes. “This is truly an Australian automotive success story,” says Neville Crichton CNZM, Executive Chairman of the Ateco Group and originator of the idea to convert left-hand drive RAM Trucks to right-hand drive at the bespoke Melbourne Manufacturing Facility (MMF). “This year will see RAM sales just shy of 3,000 units in Australia and New Zealand – last year we sold 767 and just 449 in 2017. Most pleasing of all, however, is the boost to the local automotive manufacturing sector, employing over 250 people directly, and many more indirectly via our local supplier agreements.” The RAM Trucks Australia story began in 2013, when the Ateco Group became New Zealand distributor for FCA, which included the RAM Trucks brand. Crichton realised there was an opportunity to demonstrate Australia could manufacture and produce a world-class product despite the closure of other local manufacturing facilities. RAM Trucks decided they were ready to enter the market with the Ateco Group and a worldwide search for an effective remanufacturing partner began. The Walkinshaw Group – with whom Crichton has a long-standing relationship, having raced for Tom Walkinshaw back in the 1980s – were the most competitive and were awarded the contract in 2015.
