Torn by top honour Cherished author receives award

about the history of this country. “And as a migrant that came to Australia, a country that’s yet to sign a treaty with its First Peoples, then that’s going to continue to be a thorn in our side. “I’m hoping in all honesty that I can use this award – an honour, absolutely; as a migrant woman I accept it on behalf of all migrant women.”

One of Australia’s most cherished authors, Kerry Greenwood, has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for her services to literature. The prolific Seddon writer – best known for her wildly popular Phryne Fisher murder mystery series – said she was surprised to learn of her Australia Day honours accolade. “I was astonished, I was amazed; my father was a wharfie and it’s not the sort of thing that you usually find,” she said. Greenwood grew up with books as a constant companion, losing herself in Footscray library and using writing as a way to explore her vivid imagination. “I began when I was a child, I’ve been writing all my life,” she said. “I just love writing, I adore writing, I will be thinking about a place then I have another story from there.” Greenwood in fact gets so caught up in her stories that hours can fly by without her realising. “I have two useful black cats who stomp on me when I’ve been going for too long,” she said. Born in Footscray, Greenwood has always retained her love for living and writing in the west. Keen observers can find the area weaved into her stories in the way it has weaved its way into Greenwood’s life. “Footscray fascinates me, it always has. It’s always different, you can do everything,” she said. “It is important to me that I still live here, my mother and my children and everybody I know is here.” ■ More

Altona’s Maria Dimopoulos has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia but says her work has just begun and receiving the honour on Australia Day has left her torn. She has been recognised for service to women, cultural diversity and prevention of domestic violence. Her current roles include training judges and magistrates, working on family violence policies in several Pacific Island countries and acting as deputy chairperson of the Victorian Multicultural Commission. Born in Greece, Ms Dimopoulos’ first job out of law school was working on domestic homicides. “That certainly has a sobering effect on your political views of the world,” she said. She said over the 25 years she had worked in the field there had been many gains but society could do better. “I think the media has improved but still needs to take some responsibility around the way in which it reports these acts of violence,” she said. “We still focus too much on that crisis end of family violence. “I think the prevention work is absolutely vital, and young people are clearly needing to be a greater focus of some of that prevention work. “What is really lacking I think – and this is the work that I do with multicultural women – is that we still see day in, day out barriers to their access, their equal access to these services. “We need to build a greater understanding of what those barriers might be for migrant and refugee women: why they won’t seek out support, why not speaking English means that they’re far less likely to make reports to police. Some of them come from histories of trauma where police are actually the source of abuse rather than a protector. “This is where I feel a great deal of my work has only just begun. “One of the key messages for me right throughout my activism in the fight against family and domestic violence – in fact, in anti-racism, anything that I think belittles us as human beings – is this argument that somehow family violence is cultural. It is absolutely not and I’m sick of people saying it’s culture. “Culture is a source of strength – it should never be used as an excuse for acts of violence.” She said it was “absolute honour” to receive the Australia Day award, but she felt conflicted. “It’s a tough one because of my work around the rights of Indigenous people or First Nations

Snake bite triggers snake alert By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona Meadows woman is urging pet owners to be aware of snakes after her boarder’s dog was bitten by a tiger snake last week. Last Thursday, Rocky was back home four days after being rushed to intensive care at U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital. Irene Rogers took to social media to alert pet owners that snakes were on the move. “I live a block from Skeleton Creek in Altona

Meadows,” she posted. “Today, my boarder’s dog Rocky was bitten by a metre-plus tiger snake in my backyard. I’m in Waratah Drive. This is not the first snake that I’ve had in my backyard. “Thanks to Stewy the Snake Catcher who was able catch the snake. “Please all be vigilant in this area as there are many children and animals that are vulnerable.” Stewart Gatt, aka Stewy the Snake Catcher,

said when he arrived at the property the snake was going back and forth into a neighbouring yard before being caught for relocation. “Just be wary,” he said. “The snakes will come into our properties looking for water, especially on those really warm days. “If you do hear your dog barking, go out and check out what it’s barking at. Top citizens honoured Bay Interfaith Network and in 2017 founded the Vietnamese Association of Hobsons Bay, which has grown from 10 people to more than 100 members. “The way I see the Vietnamese people, when they come to Australia they can only integrate but sometimes they haven’t got a sense of belonging yet,” Ms Nguyen said. Ms Nguyen is passionate about the environment and reducing food waste, helping mobilise the Vietnamese community to become “recycling champions”. She said she was “honoured and humbled“ to be named the city’s top citizen. Augustin Kadende, who fled Democratic Republic of Congo with his mother and younger brother at age five after his father was killed in the civil war, was named Young Citizen of the Year. The first school captain of African descent at Altona North’s Emmanuel College aims to become a human rights lawyer.

Myly Nguyen came to Australia from Vietnam alone by boat in 1981 after her father died in a ‘re-education’ camp following the Vietnam War. On Australia Day, she was named Hobsons Bay Citizen of the Year. “After the Vietnam War, a lot of ex-services, ex-army officers from the previous government, had to go to ‘re-education’ camps,” she said. “My father was a high officer in the army.” After arriving in Australia on a humanitarian visa, Ms Nguyen settled in Altona North in the same house she lives in today. She helped establish the Buddhist Youth Association of Australia and New Zealand – many Vietnamese refugees sought the temple as a place of healing – and volunteered in senior roles with peak Buddhist organisations and the Australian Vietnamese Women’s Association. “Despite all the trauma I experienced, I was able to find a full-time job working to support myself, support my family in Vietnam,” she said. A Footscray man has been charged with armed robbery after threatening a worker with a syringe while holding up a fast food store about 8.40am last Tuesday. The man stole money from the till before fleeing, but was was arrested in Richmond a short time later. He appeared before Melbourne Magistrates Court and was remanded to appear on a future date.

Mural brightens kinder Melbourne-based artist Minna Leunig last week started painting a mural depicting some of Australia’s native animals at Somers Parade Kindergarten in Altona. Leunig ended up at the kinder after the husband of director Liz Ryan drove past while she was painting another mural at Kelly Park in Werribee. “I gave him my card and that same night Liz got in contact about painting the kinder,” she said. “It happened very organically.” Like most of Leunig’s work, the kindergarten mural is a celebration of the Australian landscape and its creatures. “Apart from one horse I included in this piece for a little girl Macey, I generally tend to focus on native animals such as koalas, dingoes

and kangaroos, simplifying and animating them in ways to communicate a sense of wild joy, playfulness and harmony,” Leunig said. “Given everything that’s been going on with the fires recently, I feel like it’s more important now that ever to remind ourselves of the intrinsic value of our incredible native Australian ecosystems. They need our care and protection. The “small kinder with a big heart” has 52 children and a capacity for 62. Recycling 2.0 is Hobsons Bay’s four bin waste and recycling service. It will send less rubbish to landﬁll, and make more materials available to be re-made into new products. Households will separate their waste into four bins. Putting rinsed glass bottles and jars in the glass-recycling bin means those items will be recycled into new glass bottles and jars. A small fraction of glass is also used as a material for road and rail projects. Using the new kitchen caddy for all food scraps and offcuts helps food find its way to the food and garden waste bin. This material will not only be turned into nutrient-rich compost for Victorian soils, it will mean 8,000 tonnes less waste will go to landfill every year. Being informed about and alert to the changes to what can go in the yellow-lidded recycling bin will protect the quality and value of collected materials. Recyclable materials collected include plastics with codes 1 and 2, paper and cardboard, aluminium and steel cans. In 2019, the Victorian Government banned all electronic waste from landfill. Electronic waste, including televisions and kitchen appliances, CDs, light globes and printer cartridges must be separated from the rubbish bin and taken to various locations – see Council’s website for details.

A 26-year-old Sunshine man has been charged with driving offences after blowing 0.119 on a preliminary breath test after crashing into traffic lights at the intersection of Mitchell Street and Hampstead Road in Maidstone about two on Friday. The driver and two occupants escaped serious injury.

Shop thefts A 37-year-old Footscray man has been charged with multiple counts of shop theft after being linked to numerous thefts all over Melbourne targeting liquor stores and supermarkets. The total value of the stolen items is estimated to be over $10,000. The man was arrested last Wednesday and appeared before Melbourne Magistrates Court where he was remanded to appear on a future date.

Four bin recycling set to begin By Goya Dmytryshchak The biggest recycling overhaul in Hobsons Bayâ€™s history comes into effect in February. Hobsons Bayâ€™s new four-bin waste and recycling collection his scheduled to start next Monday. The new service will have weekly food organics and garden organics (FOGO) collection, fortnightly garbage and recycling collections, and monthly glass collection. Hobsons Bay mayor Colleen Gates said residents were being encouraged to talk to the

council if they werenâ€™t sure what went in each bin or if they had concerns. â€œMany people have been sharing their waste reduction and waste management tips and tricks with us and we want to share more of this with all residents via our social media channels and our new app currently under development,â€? she said. â€œThe new Recycling 2.0 app will also help everyone out with bin reminders each week. We ask that people please give the new system a go for a couple of cycles, and weâ€™re here to help.â€? Multi-unit dwellings, particularly those with

limited space, may have special arrangements such as sharing bins or choosing between council and contractor collection. Cr Gates said the council was working on a solution for nappies, with an estimated 3500 families with children in that age range. The council will continue to make additional bins available on request for a fee. Radio-frequency identification tags are fitted to the new bins, which the council said made it â€œeasier to return lost or stolen binsâ€?. Environmental sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Jonathon Marsden, said the new

service would separate food waste from household rubbish going to landfill. â€œThis includes food waste such as fruit, vegetables, eggshells, bones, rice, dairy and seafood, aiming to reduce the volume of waste Hobsons Bay residents send to landfill by at least 20 per cent (approximately 8000 tonnes per year),â€? he said. â€œWith four bins per household, glass will also be taken out of the commingled yellow bin, resulting in much better recycling outcomes when broken glass doesnâ€™t become embedded into other recyclable material.â€?

From punches to prose A new project rolling out Footscray from February will give a whole new meaning to writing punchy prose. Film-maker and academic Donna Lyon is teaming up with boxing gym owner Mischa Merz for a series of workshops combining boxing and creative writing, helping women survivors of child abuse and trauma to build confidence and break the silence and shame around their experience. Ms Lyon said the idea arose when she started her own training as a boxer and found it helped to connect to her body and process her own trauma. â€œIâ€™m a bit of a mixed bag, in one hat Iâ€™m an academic at the University of Melbourne, and also a producer, a filmmaker,â€? she said. â€œAt the same time my background is as a survivor of childhood abuse. Part of my recovery and healing has been to explore lots of different modes of recovery. â€œOne of those was boxing; I came to it

because I felt a lot of anger inside me and I wanted a safe way to express that.â€? Ms Lyon said boxing provided a powerful avenue for connecting to her body and the space around her, while writing offered a further avenue for safely expressing her story. â€œI wondered what would happen if you put those two things together, if you got a bunch of women who wrote creatively and generatively, using our trauma, then expressing that through the sport of boxing as well,â€? she said. The workshops are open for women aged 18 to 65. No boxing or writing experience is necessary. Founding member of punk rock band the Painters and Dockers, Williamstown’s Paulie Stewart, has been awarded an OAM for service to the community and performing arts. “The first thing that I’d really like to do is acknowledge the unknown Australian who 10 years ago donated their organs because I got a liver,” he said. Now a project officer with Jesuit Social Services, Stewart has a longstanding connection with the Alma nuns in East Timor stemming from the death of his older brother. journalists reporting on Indonesian military action killed in East Timor in 1975. Stewart said his recognition should go towards the nuns who were his inspiration. “I’ve got the craziest life,” he said. “I go from

full-on punk rock gigs with the Painters and Dockers where it’s pandemonium and then this week I’m hanging out with these nuns. “And I reckon the nuns are more punk, myself, because they don’t follow the rules, they don’t take any shit from men – they just do their thing without complaining.” Stewart said he asked his daughter, Aretha Stewart Brown, if he should accept his Australia Day gong. Two years ago, Aretha, a Gumbaynggirr woman, made international headlines when she led a march of about 50,000 in Melbourne on Australia Day calling for the date to be changed. “She said, accept it and use it to promote the nuns and the good stuff they do,” Stewart said.

Williamstown’s Jim Markovski has been awarded an OAM for service to youth over 35 years. He founded the Redskins Basketball Club, training out of RecWest at Braybrook, which has supported more than 4000 disadvantaged and marginalised youth since 1996. “I’ve been in Braybrook for over 26 years and I’m coaching second-generation kids,” Markovski said. He said he was “totally embarrassed and humbled” at his Australia Day honour, crediting his family for enabling him to have time to help others. Newport’s Susan ‘Jenny’ Mitchell has received an OAM for service to refugees and the community.

Honour for lacrosse champ Williamstown’s Suzanne Sofarnos has been awarded an OAM for service to lacrosse, having first represented Australia in 1978. She is currently the Victorian women’s senior state coach and general manager of the Australian women’s senior team for the world championship in 2021 in Baltimore, USA. Sofarnos first picked up a lacrosse stick 49 years ago at age 10. “I used to go out with my aunt, who was an ex Victorian netballer Jeannie Matthews, and she started playing lacrosse at the end of her netball career so I used to go and watch her play and that’s where my love for lacrosse came,” she said. “She was involved with the Newport lacrosse club and that’s why despite living in Williamstown all my life I’ve been a lifelong member, player, coach, administrator of Newport. Foundations of compassion Growing up as new migrants in 1960s Australia, life wasn’t easy for the Lopez family. Rafaela Lopez was 13 when she and her five siblings were relocated from the Spanish capital of Madrid to Melbourne by her parents, suddenly facing a new life in a strange new country. “In 1963 I was 13, we came and our first few years were not all that pleasant, partly it was a shock to the system to change your culture so dramatically,” she said. “I got on with it and worked in all kinds of

places, I worked in different factories, offices, shops, eventually the Whitlam government came and opened up uni’s, especially for women. “I studied history as well as anthropology and I got the tools to make a positive change.” Her experience shaped her life ever since, which she has dedicated to easing the way for later waves of new arrivals to our shores. The Footscray resident’s life of service has now been recognised with the Medal of the Order of Australia. “I feel honoured of course, but I also think that I have not been the only Spanish-speaking person who has contributed

to the community,” she said. Ms Lopez played a key role in helping to establish the Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture, now known as Foundation House. “I met this woman who was a nurse and during the war in Afghanistan she went as a volunteer, she told me she came back and didn’t know what was happening,” she said. “She was obviously suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. She said she went to Foundation House and it saved her life. “She said I owe you my life and that was … the greatest reward you can have.”

Community at heart assistance as much as we can – trying to get people on an even footing is hard. “I do live by the rule of do unto others as you would like done to you.” Ms Bignold welcomes the growing awareness around the impact of family violence on women and children, but points to a number of challenges including the need for better early intervention. “The royal commission into family violence really put family violence on the map, but the subtleties of that are not yet through,” she said. “We haven’t created the room for early intervention and there are some inherent barriers; there is a hell of a lot still to do.” Nevertheless Ms Bignold is confident that change is possible and she is particularly proud of seeing the difference her team helps make in the lives of women and children they support.

Helping women who are facing tough times to find their feet has long been at the heart of Jocelyn Bignold’s work. As the chief executive of McAuley Community Services for Women, a role she has held since 2008, she has overseen a period of the organisation during which the scourge of family violence has finally entered the public spotlight. The Footscray resident was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia on Sunday for her service to the community, in recognition of the passion with which she goes about her role. Altona Meadows is expected to attract thousands to its first regional farmers market this Sunday. Altona Meadows Community Association president Jodi Martin said it was â€œa dream come trueâ€? to become the 16th place in Victoria to host a market. She said the market, to be held at AB Shaw Reserve from 9am-2pm on the first Sunday of the month, would draw people to the suburb. â€œThe market came about after residents asked the Altona Meadows Community Association to investigate the possibility of a farmers market,â€? Ms Martin said. â€œSo, after a year of talks, it has resulted in a green light for the community, which is thrilling.

â€œThe market location was decided on due to accessibility to public transport â€“ bus and train â€“ as well as the open space and proximity to toilet facilities.â€? Art for charity’s sake A bushfire relief charity auction and exhibition will be held in Newport next month. Altona artist Simpson Myers has teamed up with the RedWest Creatives Co-op, a group for artists and performers from the west, to host the event at the Longspace Gallery. The exhibition will donate half of the funds raised to Wildlife Victoria and the other half to the Indigenous Community Fire Relief Fund. Ms Simpson, who mainly works with oil paints and embroidery, said she had originally intended to host a solo exhibition, but instead decided to join with other artists to make the event a fundraising effort for bushfire affected communities. “Every artist I spoke to was working on art related to the bushfires, had already donated to

another fundraiser or working on something of their own to help out,” she said. RedWest vice-president Leesa Gray-Pitt said several artists from RedWest had donated works to be sold at the exhibition. “It still surprises me, how lovely and willing people are to give,” she said. Ms Gray-Pitt said that around 15 artists had donated pieces so far, but the event organisers hoped 20 to 30 artworks would donated in total. The Artist Aid Auction will be held 7pm, Friday, February 7, at Longspace Gallery, 419 Melbourne Road, Newport. The event will also feature donation boxes for cash donations. Giddey, an athletic point guard who is adept at positions one through four on the court, earned an All Star Five gong at the U17 Oceania Championships, won by Australia. Giddey will look back fondly on last year. â€œBefore last year, I was kind of an unknown,â€? he said. â€œI grew a lot and then I moved up to the academy, so last year was a big year for me.â€? Twelve months ago, Giddey was best known as a son of a gun, that is the son of Warrick, a long time fan favourite of the Melbourne Tigers, a team he won multiple championships with in the National Basketball League. Now Giddey is forming his own tag as potentially one of the next stars to come off the Australian basketball production line.
