Spill seeps into bay By Goya Dmytryshchak Authorities have warned it could take weeks to mop up an oil spill that has polluted Williamstown waterways, affected wildlife and spread into Port Phillip Bay. The Environment Protection Authority was notified of the spill last Tuesday. It has identified Boral Resources, a national supplier of asphalt and other road materials, as a potential source of the pollution. Parks Victoria confirmed the pollution, which started in Paisley-Challis Wetlands at Williamstown, had impacted Jawbone Marine Sanctuary in the bay. “The impacts include a thin layer of oily residue along approximately 400 metres of the shoreline at the high tide mark within the marine sanctuary,” a spokesman said.

bird would have been affected externally. Dr Olliff said the spill could affect many birds in the area, including migratory birds who come from as far as Alaska and Siberia. “They eat small invertebrates picked out of the mud or sand,” she said. “The oiled bird was walking around and appeared to be feeding normally. “Oil on the surface around the mouth of the

drain would mean that when the birds peck into the mud to feed, they would be taking in some oil as well as food. “This would result in problems for all the birds in this area even if they didn’t get oil on their feathers.” A Boral spokesman confirmed the company was “co-operating” with the EPA in the clean-up.

“The source of the contaminant, which the EPA believes to be an oil-based substance, has not yet been confirmed,” he said. “We understand that the EPA’s investigation is ongoing. “Boral will continue to co-operate with the EPA and other relevant authorities.” A Melbourne Water spokeswoman said further clean-up may last several weeks.

“To date we have observed a number of birds with some oiling of plumage but all are actively flying and feeding.” Melbourne Water used an excavator, booms and vacuum trucks to try to stop the pollution spreading, with the Department of Transport’s marine pollution team providing back-up. EPA’s western metropolitan manager Stephen Lansdell said Boral was assisting with the clean-up. “EPA is continuing to investigate the cause and hold those responsible to account,” he said. “While further scientific analysis is underway, a nearby business, Boral Resources (Vic) Pty Ltd, has been identified as a potential source and is assisting authorities with ongoing clean-up. “The agencies are confident they have stemmed the flow of the pollutant, and arrangements have been put in place to deal with expected rainfall,” he said. “Members of the public are advised to avoid contact with water in the affected waterways.” Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre chair, environmental scientist Marilyn Olliff, has photographed the oil spill and a sharp-tailed sandpiper wader bird with oil in its feathers. “It’s such a sad day when we see wildlife affected by pollution,” Dr Olliff said. “It looks like some oil reached the bay before the booms were put in place, before the pollution was discovered, which is how the

Swifts dumped from park panel By Benjamin Millar The community advisory panel assembled to advise Maribyrnong council on the Footscray Park Masterplan is proceeding without a football community voice after the Maribyrnong Swifts were dumped as a member. Maribyrnong Swifts Football Club, Maribyrnong’s leading women’s soccer team, was told in late August it would be one of the dozen local sporting and community organisations sitting on the panel to consider Mebourne Victory’s soccer academy proposal

for Footscray Park. The club was last month informed it would be cut from the panel due to a perceived conflict of interest, only to be later told by Maribyrnong council that a final decision would be delayed pending further legal advice. Council’s chief executive officer Stephen Wall said that following the legal advice, the council had decided that Maribyrnong Swifts’s memorandum of understanding with Melbourne Victory was a “formal relationship” that constituted a conflict of interest. He said the cub was advised accordingly,

however offered the chance to present to the group. “We are confident that no other participating clubs have a conflict of interest and all members of the group have been requested to keep an open mind during discussions,” he said. “We will not be releasing the names of the organisational representatives at this time. However a report will be prepared for consideration by council that will contain the findings of the Community Advisory Group.” Swifts technical director Henrik Steenberg said the club was disappointed to have been

dropped from the panel and that there would be no representatives from the soccer sphere. “For us it’s about finding pathways for opportunities for girls, the current pathway gap in the west is a huge gap,” he said. “We will obviously continue to have a dialogue with the council as to any opportunities for football for girls in Maribyrnong, with the kind of growth we are experiencing.” The advisory panel’s report is due to be presented to the council ahead of a final decision at the City Development Special Committee on December 17.

Festival offers a cure for all ales The Williamstown Heritage Beer and Cider Festival is on this Saturday with a promise to be good for what ales you. The annual Willy Beer Fest, as it has become known over the past six years, will showcase more than 100 craft beers and ciders. Festival director Terri Jackson said this year’s event, on Williamstown’s waterfront, was the biggest yet. “We couldn’t be more excited as we are heading into our largest festival yet,” she said. “It’s celebrating the historical significance of Australia’s earliest breweries through their

links with the pubs of Williamstown. Up to 41 pubs operated in the 1880s. Lucky locals and visitors to Williamstown can still enjoy a beer in some of these heritage buildings.” She said the who’s who of craft beer would be there, including Hop Nation, Two Birds, Moon Dog, Stomping Ground, Thunder Road, Bonehead, Holgate, Blackmans and Bricklane. A 52-year-old Altona Meadows man has been charged over a spate of copper thefts that brought railways in Melbourne’s west to a standstill last month and forced thousands of commuters onto buses during the morning peak. The man is accused of stealing lucrative copper cables that caused Altona Loop services to be suspended or altered in the last week of October. Commuters were plagued by 40-minute delays during the morning peak and Metro ordered almost 50 buses while trains were down four times in one week. Nearly 50 replacement buses were ordered while trains were down over four days. “Transit police have charged a 52-year-old man with two counts of burglary and theft relating to the alleged theft of copper cabling,” Victoria Police said in a statement. The man was also charged with one count of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. Chief operating officer Catherine Baxter said Metro’s security and surveillance team would continue patrolling the area to prevent any further thefts and vandalism. “Our network security and surveillance team apprehended a man near the rail corridor early on Friday morning,” Ms Baxter said. “They were then handed over to Victoria Police.’’ She also thanked passengers for their patience. – The Age

Carter returns to the robes By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong councillor Sarah Carter has returned to the mayoral role for the first time in eight years, securing the position into the final year of the council’s current term. The River ward councillor, first elected to the council in 2008, was voted into the job by her fellow councillors at a special meeting of council last Wednesday night. Stony Creek ward councillor Megan Bridger-Darling – who came onto council at the start of this year on a vote countback following Catherine Cumming’s move to state

Parliament – was elected deputy mayor. Cr Carter is embarking on her second stint as mayor, having become the youngest woman to ever hold the position when she was elected into the role in 2010 at the age of 32. She said the support she had received since being announced in the role has been “overwhelming and humbling all at once”. “It’s been eight years since I was last mayor … A lot has changed in that time, but not my enthusiasm for doing what I do,” she said. “My passion for our community and the people in it endures.” Cr Carter takes over the role from Yarraville

ward councillor Martin Zakharov, making her the third mayor affiliated with the Labor Party in succession. Back for another tilt Colleen Gates was elected Hobsons Bay’s new mayor on Friday night. An environmental engineer who has lived in the west for about 20 years, the Wetlands ward councillor replaces Strand ward councillor Jonathon Marsden at the helm. Cr Gates previously served as mayor in 2014-15. She said her mayoral program would focus on open space, community connectedness and innovation. “We know our residents treasure our coastline and our parklands and sports fields,” Cr Gates said. “I’d like to place some focus on how the council and community can protect, enhance and share these spaces for all. “Volunteers are the glue in our community: people with a passion, hobby or interest to connect with others and give up their time freely to make a difference for our community.

Hop Nationâ€™s expansion plans By Benjamin Millar There are some big ideas brewing down at Footscrayâ€™s Hop Nation. The Hop Nation brewery team has been running its operation since 2016, based in a riverside Footscray warehouse that dates back to the 1880s. But its growing popularity has been putting on the squeeze, forcing it to look to expand. The pressure has sparked plans for a brand new brewery and bar to be built on a vacant 1233 square-metre industrial site just a stoneâ€™s

throw from their current premises. General manager Sam Hambour said the new brewery would offer more space for beer production as well as a new bar tailor-made for tastings. â€œWe just want to expand what we have been doing the last few years,â€? he said. â€œIt will give us more room to brew and to upgrade our equipment. We have really enjoyed the support in the area, if we can get it through it will give Hop Nation a great future in the west.â€? Hop Nation would retain its existing brewery

and bar, using the space to expand its more experimental beer range, barrel ageing and collaborations with other brewers. From beans to books While money may not grow on trees, Footscray West Primary School has found a way to turn its blooming orchard into a self-seeding source of funds. Parents of pupils last year began a program in which volunteers run weekly cooking sessions using produce sourced from the schoolâ€™s orchard. The sessions proved so popular the program continued this year, paving the way for the production of a cookbook as a school fundraiser. The cookbook will feature recipes that have been used to teach the pupils about the wonders of cooking with fresh produce. A Footscray man and his pet Labradoodle are fighting for life after being hit by a stolen car. The 44-year-old and his dog were waiting to cross Ballarat Road at a set of traffic lights near Gordon Street about 8.40pm on Sunday when they were hit by an out-of-control 2008 Ford Mondeo sedan, whose occupants fled. A 48-year-old man and 27-year-old woman, both from Footscray, were arrested about 10pm and questioned before being released pending further inquiries. Police are still searching for two other men who fled the car.

Westgate Highway Patrol, which currently operates out of Wyndham North police station, will relocate to Altona North. Running for as little as 50 minutes per week can drastically lower the risk of premature death, according to new research published by a team from Victoria University’s Institute for Health and Sport. In a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Associate Professor Zeljko Pedisic and his team reviewed 14 studies involving 232,149 people whose health had been tracked for between 5.5 and 35 years. They found that people who ran as little as once per week, or less than 50 minutes, had a 27 per cent lower risk of death from all causes than those who did not run at all. The study found those who ran enjoyed a 30 per cent lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease and a 23 per cent lower risk of death from cancer. They concluded that there was no clear evidence that the risks decreased with higher levels of running. “This is a good news for those who don’t have much time on their hands for exercise, but it shouldn’t discourage those who enjoy running longer and more often,” Associate Professor Pedisic said. He said the study indicates that in the general population, the benefit of running outweighs the risks. “Any amount of running … is better than no running, but higher doses of running may not necessarily be associated with greater mortality benefits.”

Heritage bid for hotels By Benjamin Millar Two of Footscray’s landmark hotels will be afforded stronger heritage protection to mark their importance in the suburb’s settlement history. Maribyrnong council recently engaged heritage experts Context to update the heritage assessments for the former Junction Hotel at 56 Whitehall Street and former Exchange Hotel at 28 Napier Street, both built in the 1800s during Footscray’s formative white settlement years. A council report on the heritage assessments noted that the existing heritage citations for both sites are limited and no longer meet new standards set by the state government. Councillors resolved to nominate the Junction Hotel to the Victorian Heritage Register due to its potential “state significance” and tighten controls for both properties in its own planning scheme. The two-storey former Junction Hotel, built in 1854 and currently operating as an office for the Les Twentyman Foundation, was found to have significance for architectural and historical reasons. “The building is made of local material which made Footscray important in the early development of Melbourne,” the report stated. “The building was used as a public meeting place for over 130 years and played a role in founding the municipality.” The two-storey Exchange (Reverence) Hotel was built in 1876 and recently ceased operations, although new operators are expected to reopen in coming months. “The building has local significance for architectural and historical reasons, resembling Renaissance-style design and having served as a meeting place since the beginnings of urbanisation in Footscray,” the report noted.

Councillor Martin Zakharov told the recent city development meeting that it was important to take further steps to ensure that the impressive built history in the inner-west is maintained and preserved. Cr Mia McGregor said it’s important that the council can request a planning permit before any redevelopment of historic buildings occurs. Heritage Victoria will be asked to complete its own assessment of the Junction Hotel site before making a recommendation to the Heritage Council of Victoria, an independent statutory body that will make the final decision on whether to include the property on the Victorian heritage register.

Apartment plan on mosque site Newport Islamic Society has applied to build a five-storey, 27 dwelling apartment building on the site of its former mosque. The site, at the corner of Walker and Mason streets in ‘the heart’ of the Newport activity centre, would also have office and retail space. A report by G2 Urban Planning, acting for the society, states the proposed development comprises ground floor retail space, a first floor office and apartments and three additional levels of apartments. Car parking for 56 vehicles is provided in a basement and at ground level. “The overall height of five levels is in keeping with the emerging character for the centre,” G2’s report states. “The fifth level is highly recessive such that from most vantage points within the centre the building will appear to be four storeys in scale. “The development will be a positive addition to the built environment. The proposal will make a significant, positive visual contribution to the ‘heart’ of the activity centre. “It will enhance the vista along Mason Street and Walker Street and provide a marker to the Newport Activity Centre.” The existing mosque building would be demolished. The planning permit application is before Hobsons Bay council.

An apartment application for 97 Ferguson Street was refused by Hobsons Bay council and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, before scaled-back plans were subsequently approved but not acted on.

A 24-hour version of the Navy SEAL ‘Hell Week’ is being held in Williamstown North to raise funds for mental health. The Performance Club is hosting a 24-hour event, Conquer 4 Twenty-Four, where participants will be pushed to their limits. Gym owners Nicolett and Dylan Conway said so many people had been touched by mental health issues that they wanted to show their support. “We just thought we’d run a pretty mentally and physically demanding 24 hours because we think that’s what people with mental illness go through every day,” Mr Conway said. “Everyone travels with mental illness at some point and exercise plays a big part in helping people with that as well. “We’re just trying to bring all that to light and make it a bit more of an issue so that everyone can know when they go to our facility there’s always someone to chat to.” Some activities for participants are being kept closely under wraps, but they could involve

A Hobsons Bay snake catcher has been sacked by neighbouring Wyndham council. Wyndham council confirmed last week it had terminated the contract of Stewart Gatt, aka Stewy the Snake Catcher. Mr Gatt had for the past four years been one of a handful of snake catchers contracted by Wyndham to provide a free service for residents. His contract was recently terminated for a number of breaches, including incorrect reporting of call-outs and what he said were “clerical errors” he made on invoices. “There were about half a dozen invoices that were incorrect and, once we were made aware of them, those were fixed up,” he told Star Weekly. “I was told by a DELWP (Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning) wildlife officer that I did not have to record the removal of blue-tongued lizards but Wyndham council was advised otherwise and this was also seen as a breach of contract.” Mr Gatt said in another instance, he had failed to report to wildlife authorities that an injured python he collected from Point Cook had died. “I used to have a full-time job, but I gave up that job in order to service the Wyndham community 24 hours, seven days a week,” he said. Mr Gatt still provides snake catching services for several other councils including Hobsons Bay. Hobsons Bay council said Mr Gatt and DELWP were its points of contact in the event of a snake sighting. The council confirmed Mr Gatt provided and would continue to provide a regular snake catching service to Hobsons Bay.

Handel’s Messiah is returning to Williamstown this month. Renowned Williamstown conductor Doug Heywood will be presiding over a twilight performance at Williamstown Town Hall featuring the Camberwell Chorale, Camerata Orchestra and soloists. Mr Heywood said the performance was a great opportunity for members of the local community to hear Handel’s powerful masterpiece, written more than 270 years ago and performed each Christmas throughout the world. Illegal waste case lands in court By Benjamin Millar Operators of a Braybrook warehouse piled high with illegal stockpiles of recycling waste have been fined for repeatedly defying orders for the materials to be removed. The Ashley Street warehouse waste piles, sitting barely 100 metres from surrounding residents, were discovered by Maribyrnong council in March. Formerly operated by TIC group but under new ownership, the large warehouse at 81-85

Ashley Street has become an illicit dumping ground for recycling waste despite no planning permit for such a use. Star Weekly revealed in August that sources familiar with the property fear the stockpiles pose a significant safety risk to nearby residents unless urgent action is taken to remove the waste. Maribyrnong council director of planning services Nigel Higgins said the council and MFB have undertaken further site inspections, with no change in the status of stored materials. WorkSafe has also investigated the site over

occupational health and safety concerns. The council was granted an injunction in the Sunshine Magistrate’s Court on October 4 requiring the owners cease the illegal use of the building within 30 days, and to ensure required essential safety measures are in place. “Council will take advice should the injunction not be complied with,” Mr Higgins said. The court imposed a penalty and awarded legal costs to the council totalling $4559. Star Weekly attempted to contact the site’s owner.

Bottle that idea Children at Guardian Early Learners childcare centre in Altona North came up with an environmentally-friendly way to replace their two greenhouses destroyed by Melbourne weather. The children built a new sustainable greenhouse from recycled plastic bottles. Family members and friends brought in their used plastic bottles and the children got them ready for construction by cutting and threading them onto poles. Poles from the destroyed greenhouses were re-used for the new project to save on materials going to waste. The children potted plants for the greenhouse and the herbs and vegies they grow will be used in their meals made in the centre’s kitchen. Educational leader Lee Couch said the project had been a great way to teach the children about being sustainable and using products that would be destined for landfill. “We’re making a positive impact on our

environment and teaching the children a really valuable lesson at the same time – an extremely hot topic at the moment, with climate change making daily headlines,” she said. “We were finding that our greenhouses that we were getting were not up to the Melbourne weather. “Our kinder children decided that we had to have a stronger greenhouse.” She said Hobsons Bay was going through a recycling crisis at the time so the centre put out a call for plastic bottles. “In the end, we had to collect over 1200 bottles to complete it … we had people in the community saving their bottles and bringing them in. “We’re in the process of saving the planet and helping out with the recycling crisis. “Our motto in the classroom is ‘Make something new out of something old’.” Goya Dmytryshchak

West Gate Neighbourhood Fund Applications are open The West Gate Neighbourhood Fund has been established by the Victorian Government to support communities in Melbourne’s inner west during the construction of the West Gate Tunnel Project.

Partnerships are now open and will assist organisations to implement projects such as community infrastructure, capital equipment and programs that build community leadership and participation.

The $10 million government fund is managed by the West Gate Tunnel Project, Major Transport Infrastructure Authority, who are also responsible for managing the West Gate Tunnel Project on behalf of the Victorian Government.

A wide range of projects are eligible including those that celebrate heritage, history or diversity, focus on arts and culture, emphasise learning and development, or enable greater participation of community members. The fund will support projects seeking over $100,000.

City’s 10 year cycling plan By Benjamin Millar More than 16 kilometres of protected lanes and a host of other safety measures have been flagged over the next decade as part of Maribyrnong council’s new 10-year cycling strategy. The Draft Maribyrnong Bicycle Strategy (2019-2029) outlines the council’s key priorities for encouraging more people to cycle to local destinations. Strategies include protecting and upgrading existing cycling infrastructure, introducing new measures as roads are renewed, improving

the overall road environment and increasing the number of available bike parking spots. A council report on the draft plan noted that cycling has seen significant growth in Maribyrnong over the past 15 years. “The city is experiencing significant population change, demand for improved active transport options and a new Maribyrnong Bicycle Strategy is proposed to support this change,” it stated. “Community awareness of cycling benefits are increasing and the local community is calling for more cycling support, particularly safer environments.”

The draft strategy has incorporated input from community drop-in sessions and the Maribyrnong Active Transport Advisory Committee (MATAC), as well as adjoining councils and state agencies. “The strategy prioritises separation and safety for all cyclists, proposing over 16 kilometres of protected lanes, encouraging safer speeds within local neighbourhoods and all activity centres, and seeks to distinguish Maribyrnong as ‘the place where people ride bikes’,” the report stated. Moving a motion in support of the strategy at the recent city development meeting,

councillor Megan Bridger-Darling said she was pleased to see the focus on cycling safety and active transport. “I think Maribyrnong could be the centre of cycling in Australia, we could be the cycling city in Australia,” she said. Councillor Gina Huynh said safe cycling has been a priority this council term. “We’ve already seen a number of successes such as the opening of the Quarry Park Mountain Bike Trails a few weeks ago … and lowering speed limits on a number of roads.” The draft Maribyrnong Bicycle Strategy is being sent for community consultation.

Teen care mission Hobsons Bay teenagers are running a ‘Teens Give Back’ Christmas appeal at a time of year when many are going without or struggling to provide the basics for their families. This year, the campaign will support West Welcome Wagon, a not-for-profit organisation supporting asylum seekers in the community. The appeal is co-ordinated by a network of parents raising teens, Bubbling Up! Parent Julie Du Plessis said 250 reusable bags would be handed to families across Hobsons Bay to work with their teenagers to fill with much-needed items for families in West Welcome Wagon’s care this Christmas. “It’s so important for our teenagers to understand the contribution they can make in their own community,” she said. It is supported by Compton Green Williamstown, Peachy Keen, Mesh Mash and local schools.

Suitable items include toiletry necessities, non-perishable food and children’s items such as books and board games. The appeal will be launched at Peachy Keen on Friday, November 15 and runs until December 4. People can pick up a bag from Compton Green at 29 Ferguson Street, Williamstown. Burglary accused granted bail By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona North man accused of committing more than 30 offences while on a community corrections order, has been granted bail. Shaddy Mallouk, 23, is charged with multiple counts of burglary in Melbourne’s west, two counts of arson and other offences. The burglaries netted more than $100,000 of cigarettes and caused more than $650,000

in property damage, the Supreme Court of Victoria has heard. The court heard that the burglaries and thefts on commercial premises spanned from January 14 to June 4, during which time Mallouk was on an 18-month community corrections order after previously being convicted of burglary. Mallouk is due to appear at Werribee Magistrates Court on November 29 in relation to 22 incidents of non-compliance with his

community corrections order. He is scheduled to appear at the County Court on July 31, 2020, to face the burglary and arson charges. Mallouk was arrested after a June 4 burglary at a Seddon FoodWorks store, in which 300 packets of cigarettes were stolen. He applied for bail before the Melbourne Magistrates Court in July but was refused on the basis that he had failed to demonstrate a

compelling reason. He filed a new application for bail last month which succeeded. The Supreme Court granted bail with a $12,000 surety and conditions including that Mallouk is to reside with his parents in Douglas Street, Altona North, and must abide by a 10pm-6am curfew. He must also report to Altona North police station daily.

History of our streets Late historian Bruce Tait fell in love with Williamstown almost immediately after starting a job delivering telegrams as a teenager. Two volumes of books, The Streets of Williamstown A-L and M-Z, have been published based on painstaking research he carried out before his death in 2017. Jeff Otter, who worked with Tait’s daughter to get his third and last book printed, said it was a comprehensive and entertaining exploration of the history of the streets of Williamstown and its significant people and events. “The author’s fascination with Williamstown and its history began when delivering telegrams in Williamstown at the age of 14,” Mr Otter said. “He wrote in a memoir that ‘within a day of commencing at Williamstown I was in love with the place’. “Delivering telegrams gave him the opportunity to explore the streets of Williamstown, meet a number of prominent people and interesting characters, and delight

Transplant brings joy By Ewen McRae Daniel Manic has had issues with his liver since he was a baby, but a transplant last year has given him a new lease on life. At just six-months-old, Daniel was diagnosed with Glycogen Storage Disease, a rare condition, similar to diabetes, that meant his body struggled to store sugars. With an often swollen liver, he said he always had a big belly, had to constantly monitor his diet, and as a kid he couldn’t take part in many of the sports his friends were playing. “I couldn’t play physical contact sport, because a little tap basically winded me,” Daniel said. “It was pretty shit to be honest. I had to be so careful. “I had a pretty strict diet. The worst thing was drinking cornflour mixed with water, which is probably the worst thing you could ever drink, but I needed it to keep my sugars up. “I went a bit off the rails as a teenager, just staying home all the time and didn’t want to do anything with my life, but I got it together.” In his early 20s, Daniel’s doctor told him he would likely be dead within eight years if he didn’t have a liver transplant, but it was nearly two years later before he put himself on the waiting list for the operation. “My mum was in the room and she burst into tears, but for me it didn’t really register,” he said. “It wasn’t until about 2017 that things changed and I put myself on the list.” Daniel had a transplant mid-way through 2018. At the same time, he was expecting the birth of his first child.

Hunter, arrived three months after his transplant. Just over a year since his transplant, and with Hunter about to turn one, Daniel is looking forward to many more years ahead. “I’ve had no complications,” he said. “I don’t have to drink cornflour any more, which is the best thing, and I’ve got a flat stomach for the first time in my life.

“It’s been pretty life-changing. To have Hunter sitting here with me, it’s been a big year.” While organ donation in Australia is anonymous, Daniel wrote a letter to the family of his liver donor to thank them for giving him a second chance. “I struggled to put into words how I felt,” he said. “I said thank you, and told them how it had helped me. I’m obviously sorry for their loss, but I’m grateful for what they’ve given me. My partner and I moved out west six years ago, when our son was a baby. We wanted to live close to the city â€“ but not too close. Inner westies seem to feel a strong attachment to the area, and thereâ€™s a real sense of community. Itâ€™s a welcoming place. We love it. What do you like most about the area? I like the industrial history, all the old buildings, and being close to both the city and the sea. And I love the fact that not everyone around here looks exactly like me: itâ€™s really culturally diverse. Being a migrant I feel at home in a community thatâ€™s made up of so many different cultures. What are your favourite local places? Maribyrnong River for walks, bike rides, or a cruise on The Blackbird with local legend Captain Peter Somerville. For fresh air, Footscray Park, Altona beach, Williamstown back beach and Newport Lakes. For food, Barkly Street in Footscray, Little Man in Seddon and One For the Crow in Maidstone.

If you do not have a Will, you are regarded as passing INTESTATE (not interstate, as in another State) and a “league ladder” of beneficiaries, starting from your next of kin, may share your Estate. Rarely, in the absence of any close relatives, the Estate may be forfeited to the government. For older people, it is also a good idea to have a Power of Attorney to allow a trusted relative or friend to have power to sign documents on your behalf during your lifetime should you become unable to do so. A Medical Treatment Appointment also allows you to appoint a person to assist you with medical decisions and treatment.

Spiros Koziaris has created his own slice of history, becoming the first Footscray ANA Cricket Club player to reach 400 games. Koziaris has long held the games record at ANA but 400 was previously seen as mission impossible for the club that was founded in 1931. “It’s nearly 40 years of cricket and it doesn’t come quickly,” Koziaris said. “It’s a lot of work and you have to try and keep the body fit because I’m over 50 now.” Koziaris views cricket a little more differently to the youngster that played his first game in the juniors at Footscray ANA. Now 53, making a high score or taking a swag of wickets is not the be all and end all that it might have once been. The off spinner still relishes the competitiveness of cricket, but it is the friendships and health benefits that he holds dearly now.

“I do love the game, but it’s the friends, there’s four or five of us who have played 35 to 40 years together, that make it pretty special,” Koziaris said. “We really have a great laugh. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously.” Koziaris believes community cricket is more important than ever before. As the secretary at Footscray ANA, he promotes the club to outsiders, welcomes new players to the fold and tries to entice former players back. He believes one of the big reasons people are returning to ANA is for the mental health benefits of being active and being around like-minded people. “Apart from the game, it’s about having a really good laugh and any troubles we have disappear for awhile,” Koziaris said. “Let’s try and get some of the old blokes back who might be having a bit of a hard time with

different things in life. When they come to the club, it gives them a bit of a boost.” Koziaris’ 400th game coincided with another special Footscray ANA milestone. John Verdino, a crafty medium pacer, took his 900th wicket for the club, also a record that has never been achieved prior to this season. “It was pretty special being on the ground at the same time John took his 900th wicket,” Koziaris said. The big question now is whether Verdino can get to the 1000. “I reckon I’ll probably play my 500th and he’ll take his 1000th at around the same time,” Koziaris said with a laugh. United’s sweet victory By Lance Jenkinson Western United produced a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers to send a message to the contenders in the A-League at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday night. It was a case of home sweet home for United, who celebrated victory on home soil for the first time with their previous two wins coming on the road. United coach Mark Rudan was impressed with the brand of football displayed by his team on a chilly night in Geelong, but also delighted with the never-say-die attitude of the players, who won after trailing for the second consecutive week. “It was a big win and thoroughly deserved, I must say,” Rudan said. “We’ve done it again, showed true test of character, once again resilience and once again we stayed true to our principles of play. “I thought it was a much more comprehensive performance [compared to last week] and we thoroughly deserved to win tonight against a side that was top of the table before the round started, so really pleased with them.”

Western United thrived in a back-to-the-wall situation again. Another slow start for United saw them trailing after a Mitchell Duke goal five minutes in. The slow starts for United have been a source of frustration for Rudan, who admits it is a concern. Another speed bump for Western United was a hamstring injury to experienced playmaker Panagiotis Kone. The severity of Kone’s injury is to be revealed, but he will be a big loss to the team. “It’s a hamstring and we’re always very cautious,” Rudan said. In between Duke’s goal for Western Sydney and Kone’s injury, Western United found an equaliser through an unlikely source. United central defender Andrew Durante rose at the far post to score a crisply timed goal with a header from a delightful Alessandro Diamanti corner in the 13th minute. It was a rare goal for Durante – his first in five years in the A-League. “I didn’t even know the last time I scored a goal,” Durante said. “It’s great to not only get on the scoresheet,

Chapman impressed with his ability to both defend assertively and apply a quick counter. His transition into the midfield after playing the first month of the season as a defender was seamless. Western United’s winning goal came in the 58th minute through Kwabena Appiah-Kubi. United defender Ersan Gulum scuffed his shot, but it turned into an assist when Appiah-Kubi gathered the ball, turned and powered his shot past Wanderers goalkeeper Daniel Lopar. Western United has a headache at the selection table ahead of Saturday night’s clash with Newcastle Jets at GMHBA Stadium. Besart Berisha is likely to return to the line-up after he was rested for the Wanderers game, but will Appiah-Kubi return to the bench after a strong outing?

Teen takes on the best By Lance Jenkinson It has been such a hectic and rewarding season for Deer Park taekwondo sensation Reba Stewart that she has not had a moment to truly reflect on her great achievements in 2019. With sport and study for year 12 exams, there has been little downtime for the hard-working Stewart. When reading a list of some of her achievements on the taekwondo mat, including gold medals at the Australian Open, Oceania Championships and Pacific Games, Stewart finally realises how far she has come in the sport. â€œIt is a bit surreal,â€? Stewart said. â€œItâ€™s been such a hectic year, I havenâ€™t had a lot of time to stop and reflect. â€œI havenâ€™t been in this sport for a very long time, but the amount that Iâ€™ve done in the short amount of time, I feel like Iâ€™m really doing well at the moment.â€? Stewartâ€™s moment of arrival on the world stage came at this yearâ€™s world championships in Manchester. The 18-year-old was staring down the worldâ€™s best taekwondo players and more than held her own. A top 16 finish was an incredible result for a teenager facing competitors upwards of 10 years older with more experience. â€œI think that was definitely my highlight of the year,â€? Stewart said. â€œIt was in Manchester and it was a really big comp with so many different countries. â€œThe atmosphere there was a lot different from all of the other competitions. â€œIt was the world championships â€“ itâ€™s one of the highest comps you can be at.â€? Stewart took so much learning out of the worlds.

â€œThe way they fight, you just know how much training, effort and time they put into becoming the best athletes in the world,â€? Stewart said. â€œI came up against a ranked No. 2 in the world.â€? Stewart was primed to perform her best at the competition. A training camp in Jordan leading up had her in a strong mental and physical state. â€œI came up against a 26-year-old woman,â€? she said. â€œIâ€™m in the heavyweight category, plus-73 kilos, so thereâ€™s some big girls. â€œI really liked how I performed. â€œIt was the best preparation Iâ€™ve done for a competition beforehand.â€? Now that she has mixed it with the best taekwondo players in the world, the sky is the limit for Stewart. Her dream of one day representing Australia at an Olympics is a step closer. â€œFighting them, youâ€™re on the stage with them, so you feel like you belong there,â€? Stewart said. â€œYouâ€™re on the same mat as them, so I know that I can become the best that I can be as well. â€œI can become top 10 in the world, top five in the world, or I could be No. 1 one day.â€? Stewart trains under coach Jerry Moraitis at Hallâ€™s Taekwondo in Tullamarine. She has just completed her year 12 studies at Maribyrnong College. Stewart is the November nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Stewart will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club to assist her in achieving her sports goals.
