Festival lights up the west The spectacular Festival of Lights is back this Saturday with an eclectic line-up of entertainment for all ages. Organised by the West Footscray Traders Association, the free festival celebrating Indian and global culture will be back at Whitten Oval for the third year running. Association president Pradeep Tiwari said the story of Diwali – the Festival of Lights – is a universal one. “It denotes the triumph of goodness over evil, light over darkness, and encourages people to seek the light within themselves,” he said. “The mandate of the festival is to promote diversity by bringing the community together in a grand celebration and ultimately promoting West Footscray as a diverse and multicultural place to shop, eat and enjoy.” This year’s festival will feature Indian classical dance, Bollywood dance groups and a Bhangra dance performance, as well as hip hop, Brazilian, Bosnian and Polynesian dancers. Food trucks will be featuring cuisines from around the world while Indian dessert stalls will add a sweet touch to the day. Bay’s big bin changes Hobsons Bay households are set to have four bins for kerbside collection, including a glass bin collected monthly and a food and green organics bin picked up weekly. A council report also reveals plans to change garbage collection from weekly to fortnightly. Kerbside recycling in Hobsons Bay was suspended for two months after the council’s contracted recycler, SKM Recycling was declared insolvent by the Supreme Court on August 2. It resumed on September 30 and commingled recyclables are currently being taken to SKM’s

former Laverton North plant under an interim agreement with receivers KordaMentha. The council’s chief executive Aaron van Egmond is expected to negotiate new contracts with multiple local recycling providers to avoid reliance on one business. The council’s recycling costs have risen from $7 million to $8 million per year, and the introduction of glass and food organics and green organics (FOGO) bins is expected to cost $4 million as an initial one-off cost. Hobson Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said that removing glass from the commingled recycling bin was central to reducing contamination.

“We need to take the glass out of the recycling stream to prevent it from contaminating the other recyclable material such as paper, cardboard, aluminum, steel and plastics,” he said. “This will mean high values for our recyclables and immediate use for the glass collected to be made into bottles.” The report states FOGO currently going to landfill can also be processed and reused. “The municipal-wide changes to the waste and recycling services include the delivery of a weekly FOGO service, a monthly glass recycling service, a fortnightly recycling service (paper, plastic, and metal), and a

fortnightly garbage (landfill) collection service. “All residents will receive a new glass bin, and those residents who do not already have a green waste bin will receive a green bin. “An extensive engagement program is planned to support the rollout.” The report states council is analysing whether multi-unit or high density developments using its service can accommodate the extra bins. The council plans “to move as quickly as possible” to introduce the new bins. They could be introduced as early as November-December, or early next year, depending on contractual terms negotiated.

RSPCA probes poisoned dim sims Maribyrong pet owners are being urged to remain vigilant following the attempted poisoning of a dog with baited food. The RSPCA has confirmed it is investigating an incident that took place around September 17 in which the dog’s owner discovered four dim sims stuffed with red tablets in their backyard. RSPCA Victoria head of inspectorate Terry Ness said the exact location of the dog cannot be disclosed for privacy reasons, however he confirmed the incident occured in the

Maribyrnong area. “Luckily, the owner involved in this incident found the allegedly baited dim sims before their dog was able to ingest anything potentially poisonous,” he said. Mr Ness said that any information provided by the community is crucial when it comes to investigating reports of dog baiting.

“We are appealing to residents in hope that someone comes forward with intel that allows us to progress further in this case,” he said. “Unfortunately we have received no further updates so far regarding the alleged dog baiting in Maribyrnong after conducting a mail drop in the local area.” The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act makes it an offence to intentionally lay bait for an animal that contains a poison or substance that has a harmful effect. Anyone found guilty of such an act faces fines up to $41,305 or 12 months imprisonment, doubled if the offence kills or seriously harms the animal.

Standing up for life’s little treasures South Kingsville couple Sandhya and Benjamin Burriss have four children, three of whom couldn’t wait to get into the world. Florelle, age three, and two-year-old twins, Obi and Jai, are all “prem babies” who were born before 37 weeks gestation. The family, whose latest addition, Kester, nine months, was born at 37 weeks, is taking part in this month’s Walk for Prems. The walk is the largest annual fundraiser for Life’s Little Treasures Foundation supporting families of babies born sick or premature. “Flo came at 35 weeks,” Ms Burriss said. “She was actually growth-restricted so we were expecting her to come sooner rather than later because she was measuring small the whole time. “She was in special care for four weeks. “She was 1664 grams when she was born.” The twins were born at 32 weeks, weighing 1769 grams (Obi) and 1796 grams (Jai). “They were spontaneous labour so I didn’t know they were coming early, but apparently 64 per cent of multiple births are premature births,” Ms Burriss said. “They were in special care for five weeks and intensive care as well because they needed breathing support. “When I was in special care with the kids, it’s very isolating. You feel like you’re on your own and friends and family don’t really understand the situation until you’re in that situation.” Ms Burriss has started Mama Genie, an online hub of products, services and resources for families with premmie children in the neonatal and special care units. Walk for Prems, now in its 10th year, is on in Melbourne on Sunday, October 27 from 9am. People who can’t attend in person can take part as a Virtual Walk for Prems Team member. Mr Ness said anyone with concerns about the behaviour of a dog in their community should discuss their concerns directly with the animal’s owner or report it to the local council. “If you suspect that your pet has eaten a bait or poison, it is essential that you contact your local veterinarian as soon as possible, even if your animal is not exhibiting any adverse symptoms,” he said. “While we have seen no increase in dog poisoning cases this year, we urge anyone who has information regarding baiting to file a report with Victoria Police or RSPCA Victoria’s Inspectorate by calling 9224 2222.”

Teens face theft charges Two teens have been charged with stealing from a Highpoint retail store as part of an investigation into a series of organised thefts at shopping centres across Melbourne. Maribyrnong criminal investigation unit’s Detective Senior Constable David Clarke said a number of offenders entered the Nike store at Highpoint shopping centre on September 23, suddenly fleeing with a range of clothing. “As a result of public assistance, we’ve been able to arrest and remand two teenage males, 16 and 15 years of age,” he said. “We wish to thank our community for their assistance and ensure the public we do everything possible to make sure offenders are held to account – regardless of age.” Both teens have been remanded to appear in Melbourne Children’s Court. Retail store theft offences reported in Maribyrnong hit a low of 411 in the 12 months to June 2018, but jumped almost 50 per cent to 611 in the year to June 2019. Footscray Acting Inspector Brett Kahan said police from across the division were stationed at Highpoint during the school holidays, targeting stealing and robbery offences. Acting Inspector Kahan, who has been leading the proactive Task Force ‘Wayward’ team since it was set up last year, said police were working with the shopping centre’s stores and security and focusing on known offenders to deter criminal activity. The Highpoint store thefts were part of a spate across suburbs including Malvern, Brunswick and Hoppers Crossing.

‘Foul’ smell concern

By Goya Dmytryshchak While most people welcomed last week’s warmer spring weather, long-suffering Brooklyn residents reported renewed odours similar to “dead animal” smells. The EPA’s pollution hotline received six odour complaints last Wednesday night and more reports Friday morning. Brooklyn resident Lexi Christou, of the Brooklyn Pollution Action Group, said like many of her neighbours, she smelled the foul odour on Wednesday. “There’s a distinct mix between either a livestock smell or a dead meaty animal smell,” she said. “I got home at about 9.30 Wednesday night and it was really, really strong and when I went inside my husband said ‘It still stinks out there’,” she said. “He’d been home since 5 o’clock. “We don’t go outside at all when it’s like that and if we do it’s away from the area. So, we don’t take the dogs to the dog park around the corner or anything like that because it’s just disgusting. “You can’t be out there with that kind of smell. “If you’re out there trying to have a barbecue in the evening with your family, it’s not possible.” Fellow Brooklyn resident Chris Dunlevy also filed a report about the odour on Wednesday. “There’s probably three or four particular smells you get and that particular one was the really foul livestock smell, like sheep or cattle being led to the slaughter,” he said. “That particular one was really rancid.” EPA western metropolitan regional manager Stephen Lansdell said officers were

investigating multiple reports of a smell described as “similar to a dead animal”. “EPA believes the odour may have continued for several days because of the warm, stable weather, and encourages residents to report suspected industrial odours promptly as we move into summer, to give investigators the best chance of tracing the source,” he said. “With warmer days on the way, EPA is

assessing weather forecasts each week and preparing for likely conditions that may trap odour or encourage dust in the Brooklyn area, with officers stationed in Brooklyn for immediate response on likely problem days. “EPA currently has regulatory notices on several premises in Brooklyn, to address odour and other air pollution issues.” The EPA’s 24 hour hotline is 1300 372 842.

A master plan for Dennis Reserve at Williamstown, adopted by Hobsons Bay council in May, is now at the planning permit stage. The plan, which includes four new tennis courts and a new community centre, is scheduled to be completed in three stages over three years. Stage one will include demolishing the former ladies bowling green, Williamstown Central Tennis Club pavilion and two existing courts, and building four new courts. The second stage includes building a central open-space area and upgrading the playground, while the final stage includes demolishing the Williamstown Senior Citizens Centre to build a multi-purpose community pavilion. Mayor Jonathon Marsden said the planning permit was the first step towards delivering the approved master plan. “If planning approvals go according to plan, we can start working on the tennis courts in early 2020,” he said. He said the senior citizens building was nearing the end of its useful life, with structural integrity and subsidence the main issues. Community consultation for the open spaces and landscape design will run from November 1-30, with drop-in sessions on Sunday, November 10 from 11.30am-1.30pm and Thursday, November 14 from 5-7pm at Williamstown Senior Citizens Centre, 109 Ferguson Street, Williamstown. The Finnish Society of Melbourne is this month hosting the 15th annual Baltic Festival at Altona. The festival celebrates the cultures of the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Jeffery McDougall said that since the Finnish Society was hosting this year’s festival, most of the food and beverages would be from the host nation. “We’ve got Finnish meat pies – they call it lihapiirakka,” he said. “There’s going to be pulla cinnamon sweet rolls. There will be beverages from the bar. Again, since we’re hosting it, most of the beverages will be Finnish or Australian. “One of the popular drinks that the Finnish people have is called lonkero, and that’s a flavoured gin in a can.”

“There’ll be a concert where people can see the different choirs and folk-dancing groups and cultural performances.” Tuire Karaharju-Huisman said the festival started 15 years ago at Altona’s Finnish Hall with the theme of “Sounds of the ocean”. “We had great participation then and it is wonderful that we are still going strong and have many groups of young people also taking part,” she said. This year’s theme is “Springtime”, celebrating rejuvenation and regrowth. The Baltic Festival is on Sunday, October 20 from 1-4pm at Finnish Hall, 119 Pier Street, Altona. New twist on soccer park vote By Benjamin Millar The controversy over Melbourne Victory’s proposal to build a soccer academy in Footscray Park has taken another turn with Maribyrnong council forced to demand people voting online for members of a new advisory group show proof they are local residents. Maribyrnong councillors voted in August to reject a draft master plan drawn up for the park that included the new soccer academy on the western flank, electing to send the proposal to a new community advisory panel for further consideration.

Twenty-six candidates for the five community representative positions on the Footscray Park Community Advisory Group have been listed on the council’s Your City Your Voice website. The five candidates who receive the most votes will be granted a place in the group. The council previously used the voting system in 2017 to fill places on its parking management community advisory group, but opposing sides in the soccer academy debate raised fears the vote could be stacked by people living outside Maribyrnong. The council has responded to the concerns by updating its voting process to require people

People who had already cast a vote were contacted via email and told they needed to verify their address for their vote to be counted. Council chief executive Stephen Wall said the council was initially relying on people being honest when they stated their suburb at

the time of registration and voting. “Following concerns raised by residents and by posts on social media, we are now asking voters to provide proof of residency. We will also verify the eligibility of those who have already voted,” he said. “While we are hopeful that a democratic election process will reflect the community’s wishes, this can never be 100 per cent guaranteed by any election process.” Mr Wall said once the five members of the advisory group have been confirmed, the group will meet with an independent facilitator. Footscray Park Community Advisory Group voting closes 5pm, Wednesday, October 9.

Bike trail on track The west’s first downhill mountain bike trail is all set to roll, three years after the idea was first floated. Inner-west cycling enthusiasts set the wheels in motion for the course in 2016, identifying Quarry Park in Footscray as the most suitable location. Maribyrnong council included the track and a skills park in a master plan for the 7.2 hectare former tip site and the state government last year committed $400,000 towards the project. The course includes descending trails suitable for beginner and intermediate levels and a gentle ascending trail. A skills park includes technical features and learn-to-ride elements while an asphalt ‘pump track’, picnic area and seating round out the area’s new offerings. A recent planting blitz by Footscray City College students helped put the finishing

touches on landscaping around the course, including about 300 new trees. Quarry Park Mountain Bike Trails will be officially launched this Saturday at the Giant BikeWest Fest, with riding demonstrations, activities, and a free sausage sizzle. Relationships were starting to become frayed. “Anxiety, which I had always suffered from to some extent, was exacerbated by my drinking and occasional drug use.” Sam says he didn’t hit any particular rock bottom but he realised alcohol was the cause of a lot of problems in his life. “What made it clear that I had a real problem with alcohol was when I made that connection and I made a conscious decision to stop drinking, I couldn’t,” Sam said. “I was unable to, on my own, manage any prolonged period of abstinence. “The worst … would be, I’ll have a couple of drinks on a Friday night after work and then the next thing I know is it’s Saturday afternoon and I haven’t slept, and that’s involved several nightclubs, probably getting kicked out of one, and then finding a party or someone’s house to go back to and drink. “People who knew me probably didn’t suspect that I had a drinking problem because it wasn’t like I was drinking every single day or every single night – my problem is that once I start I can’t stop.”

Sam said after a roller coaster of abstaining for a while and then drinking uncontrollably, he was exhausted and desperate. “One Sunday, I hadn’t had a drink for six or seven days since the previous weekend, which had been another low point, and something occurred to me … I think it was the realisation that nothing’s gonna change unless I seek help,” he said. “I found the number for one of the Melbourne offices of AA on Google and that Sunday morning when I thought, I need some help here, called up.” That night, he says despite feeling

apprehensive, he attended his first meeting. “I remember it being quite a profound experience because immediately you had people talking about what had been my experience up until that point,” Sam said. “There was an immediate sense of relief, and hope as well, because they were talking about being sober now and not needing to drink anymore.” Two and a half years sober, Sam is now a ‘sponsor’ – or mentor, for others. “The most meaningful difference it has made is to my now wife – for her to have someone who is reliable, is consistent, doesn’t lie about

Walk to build awareness By Goya Dmytryshchak Schoolchildren will be among the beneficiaries of this month’s ‘Walk a Mile in my Shoes’ mental health awareness event at Williamstown. Mental health practitioner Justine Brogna, who is hosting the annual walk for the second year, said funds would be used to create wellbeing spaces at three schools: Altona Meadows Primary School, St Augustine’s at Yarraville and St Mary’s at Williamstown. “They are three schools that have indicated a desire to have a wellbeing space,” Ms Brogna said. “Essentially, it’s a retreat area that kids can go to for sensory interests – they probably have a fish tank in there, books, plants, music, mindfulness activities. “So, it’s a nice space for kids to be creative. “Also, for kids that are having some struggles – maybe some anxiety or some friendship issues – it’s an area they can go to and do some quiet reading without feeling lost in the playground.” More than 1000 people attended last year’s inaugural walk. People are being urged to wear something green, the official colour for mental health, in honour of those experiencing mental health-related issues. There will be live performances, raffles, information stalls, children’s football clinics, a sausage sizzle and a jumping castle. Community fund kicks on Nineteen community groups will be the beneficiaries of more than $42,500 in grants recently awarded by the Hobsons Bay Community Fund, which today commences a new era. The fund’s new leadership group will today take the reins, with chairman Adrian Butera replacing founder Hayden Raysmith, Julie Noonan becomes deputy chair, Julie Richards secretary and David Mattner treasurer. Since 2006, the fund has built up $940,000 and used the interest for grants totalling more than $300,000 awarded to 115 mostly small grassroots organisations. This year’s recipients include TreeHause Williamstown for its Walk a Mile in my Shoes mental health event, Williamstown Cricket Club for its all abilities team expenses, Laverton Community Children’s Centre for its accessible yard for special needs children, South Kingsville Community Centre for free holiday programs for the disadvantaged and Carers Link Men’s Group for a pilot program enabling children with autism to play soccer. “It allows people who have not been able to pick up funding through other local or state organisations to pick it up from us,” Mr Butera said. Foot Pain or Heel Pain?

Foot pain is extremely common, affecting more than 80% of people at some point in their lives, with heel pain being the most common of all human foot complaints. Despite their frequency, these conditions are often mismanaged and incorrectly treated, leaving many sufferers spending time and money on treatments without long-term solutions or relief. But why are such common problems seemingly so hard to treat effectively? We asked one of Australia’s leading foot, knee and leg pain experts, and practitioner to some of the worlds best athletes, Dr. Paul Dowie, from Foot and Leg Pain Clinics. “Besides the fact that the foot is one of the bodies most complex structures and we are on them all the time, there are two major reasons foot pain and particularly heel pain treatment is often ineffective, especially long-term. Either only the symptoms are being addressed and not the underlying cause or the exact nature of the condition is not being identified or understood.” For example, most heel pain is incorrectly assumed to be an inflammatory condition but it is nearly always a result of nerve impingement or tissue degeneration. Tissue thickening is often mistaken for inflammation, contributing to incorrect diagnoses and treatment. Tips from the stars Australia’s success on the cricket world stage depends on continued investment at the grassroots level, according to some of the game’s rising stars. Australian cricketers Sophie Molineux, Elyse Villani and Will Pucovski visited Druids Cricket Club in West Footscray recently to talk with players about their state and national team experience, encouraging the club to tap into the pool of funds available for local cricket via the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund (ACIF) and the Grassroots Cricket Fund Community Club Grant. While the $2 million Grassroots fund was exhausted within a week, funding of up to $30,000 in the $4.6 million ACIF remains open to all clubs, associations, schools and councils.

Molineux told Star Weekly local clubs play an important part in shaping the future stars of international cricket. She said as well as helping players to build skills, sporting clubs are also a great place for building social connections. Australian cricketer Elyse Villani said the opportunity to leave a tangible legacy to community cricket is important to all players. NAB breaks off bank branch By Benjamin Millar NAB will bring to an end more than a century of banking in Footscray when it permanently closes its Hopkins Street branch this Thursday. The bank’s head office has cited declining use of its Footscray branch as the reason for closing its doors and moving customers to the busier Sunshine branch. NAB ATMs will also be removed, leaving West Footscray, Yarraville and Newmarket Shopping Centre as the nearest NAB-supplied machines.

The bank has written to customers to inform them of the changes and has suggested alternative arrangements such as moving to online banking or banking with Australia Post. Footscray resident Ken Betts said he discussed the intended closure with NAB on behalf of local traders’ associations, but the writing was on the wall once head office had made its decision. He said the closure is a blow to local businesses and personal customers who used the Footscray branch. “So much for the royal commission inquiry

that highlighted poor customer service treatment – the bottom line here is the bottom line, which is all they care about,” he said. “I believe they have underestimated the fact that Footscray is one of Melbourne’s fastest growing suburbs and still the gateway to the west.” Mr Betts said he will be protesting the decision by changing banks, ending 60 years as a customer. NAB retail customer executive Finny George said NAB had spent $1.6 million upgrading its Sunshine branch, while a Highpoint branch

will also remain open. “While our branches continue to be an important part of the way we provide banking services, the way our customers are banking has changed dramatically in recent years and increasingly we find our customers are using cards instead of cash, online banking and mobile apps more,” he said. “Importantly, there will be no job losses as our employees will continue to support our customers at both Sunshine and Highpoint branches.” The branch will be closed from 4pm Thursday, October 10.

Let nature nurture The Truganina Explosives Reserve at Altona will be opened to the public for an event marking World Mental Health Day. Marilyn Olliff, who chairs the Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre based at the reserve, said the event would include a talk by Dr Justin Lawson of Deakin University’s Faculty of Health on how being outdoors makes our brains work differently. “He’s going to give a talk on how we change when we go outdoors into nature,” Dr Olliff said. “One of the things about us living in a very urban and fairly densely populated society is that we don’t get the chance to catch our breath, if you like. “What Justin is working on is, they are actually looking at changes to the brain when you are outdoors just looking at vistas and away from traffic noise and things like that.” The reserve, once used to store explosives for civil use such as mining and quarrying,

operated from 1901-62 and is home to rare flora and fauna untouched for decades. The reserve includes the keeper’s residence built in 1897 and 16.5 hectares of salt marsh and sand dunes, remnants from the magazine, an explosive testing shelter and tramway lines used to transport explosives. The event will include guided walks, children’s activities and a sausage sizzle, and children’s author Jackie Kerin will be there with the Flock Oz to welcome the migratory birds back for the summer. A Seddon photographer’s images of a rapidly fading suburban life have been recognised for their important role in helping preserve a slice of local history. Warren Kirk has been shortlisted in the 2019 Victorian Community History Awards for his photographic publication Suburbia: The Familiar and the Forgotten. Kirk, the documentary photographer behind the acclaimed ‘Westography’ photo series on website Flickr, painstakingly assembled more than 150 images taken across the past decade – a period in which Kirk has observed rapid change in the suburban landscape. Suburbia offers Kirk’s trademark glimpses into the homes, sheds and shops populated by the elderly inhabitants of a disappearing

suburban dream. The 2019 award nominees include 25 print publications and 17 history projects, from popular novels and works of journalism to a property database of Phillip Island. Royal Historical Society Victoria president Richard Broome said this year’s finalists have displayed “dazzling diversity” and innovative and creative ways of telling the history of Victoria. All shortlisted nominees are in the running for cash prizes ranging from $500 to $2000, with $5000 to be awarded to the winner of the Victorian Premier’s History Award. I’ll also have a sketch book with me. We’re developing a friendship with Sungei Buloh Wetlands in Singapore and when I visit in November, I plan to give them the book with pictures and messages from Hobsons Bay.

I’ve lived in Hobsons Bay since 1996. I moved here with my family, from Fremantle in WA. We were drawn to the water, the wetlands and shipping – it reminded us of what we were leaving behind.

What are you passionate about?

What do you like about Newport?

In no particular order, off the top of my head: community, Newport Fiddle and Folk Club, house concerts, Williamstown Botanic Gardens, bikes, accessible spaces, The Uluru Statement from the Heart, refugees, non-fiction books for children, music, gender equity, sustainable living, coastal wetlands, art, growing fruit and vegetables, my new mattress …

I like the community that has built up around the arts and the environment. I belong to the Newport Fiddle and Folk Club and The Substation is walking distance from home. I have wonderful neighbours, we look out for each other. The library is tops, and I’m near the train station, Newport Lakes and Sandy Point. I like riding my bike (nothing too strenuous) along the river and around the bay. There’s so much I like about living in Newport.

What are you working on at the moment?

I wish there were more trees, especially in the parks and more use made of endemic trees, shrubs and grasses in the public plantings. Since reading Birdscaping Australian Gardens by George Adams, I’ve been imagining beautiful urban nature corridors. But in reality I’m seeing a lot of grass that has to be mowed. Birds like plants of different heights and structures. Single species avenues are not so good for them. I’ve just come back from Alice Springs and saw some fabulous street plantings.

I’m always working on stories with my musical collaborator, Sarah Depasquale. We’ve a set about plants, colonisation and botanic gardens (inspired by the Williamstown Botanic Gardens). We’re off to the Kyneton gardens to perform on October 20. I’ve another children’s picture book coming out, published by the National Library of Australia and another in the pipeline. Super excited to be heading off to a storytelling conference in Bengaluru and hooking up with Filipino buddy, Anna Manuel to present workshops. And super-super excited to be returning via Singapore where I’ll hook up with the storytelling community and Sungei Buloh Wetlands. And super-super-super excited to be celebrating World Kamishibai Day on December 7. Kamishibai is a Japanese way of sharing stories.

Iconic Footscray restaurant is up for sale… but it looks to be in good hands When Mark Sutton decided to branch out on his own, he launched with 15 years’ licensed real estate agent experience and a strong belief that, through shifting his focus more fully onto “the detail”, he could get his clients genuinely better outcomes. So Mark set up Sutton Commercial Industrial Pty Ltd in 2002, with a laser focus on “the detail” of sourcing and delivering commercial, industrial and greenfield sites to sell or lease.

“Confidentiality is absolutely assured in any transaction,” he states. “At Sutton, we don’t use social media at all and never release our results to the public. And we use confidentiality agreements if requested. “A clients’ business remains their own at all times.” The business also has a reporting structure that puts clients in the box seat via open, clear and well-defined lines of communication and accountability.

It’s now been proven that his drive, self-belief and detail-focus were well-founded, with some of Victoria’s largest firms long claiming him as their go-to agent in commercial property, particularly in Melbourne’s west.

“Our way of doing things,” says Mark, “ensures clients are fully informed throughout the disposal or acquisition process. I will be their primary contact through regular meetings or teleconferences, whichever they prefer.

But it’s not just the large number of sites his outfit sells and leases that makes Mark so well known. It’s also his discretion and maintenance of confidentiality that draws equal favour from clients.

“As a part of the process, we prepare reports on the success of our clients’ marketing campaigns, and rate prospective purchasers or tenants as to their likelihood of participation. Clients are in the loop from start to end.”

Mark says discretion is a hallmark of his organisation, a principle that will, for example, automatically apply in his current sale of Footscray’s famous Jim Wong Chinese Restaurant premises.

And perhaps the legion of locals who once called Jim Wong Restaurant their own can draw consolation in knowing its sale is being conducted by another local who also loves the area.

SPORT Young gun takes medal and eyes a VFL spot Karan Bharathi may have just been hailed as the best player in the Western Region Football League’s division two, but he could be running around in different colours in 2020. The Yarraville Seddon Eagles winger took home the Alan Smith Medal recently, and is currently weighing up offers from three VFL clubs as he continues to strive to reach his dream of an AFL career. The medal capped off a great year for the 18-year-old, with the Eagles also claiming the premiership after dominating minor-premiers Wyndhamvale last month. Bharathi won best on ground honours. “It was a fun night, not just for me but for the club as well,” Bharathi said. “I had my mum there, and it was one of the first times she’s been there to see me win an award, so that was nice. “I went in hoping for the best. I had a questionable start, getting used to senior footy, but about half way through I picked up my form and started playing consistent footy which was

good.” He said his game went to new heights when he addressed some of his technical deficiencies through the middle portion of the season. “I needed to become a better ball user to really improve my game, so that was a big focus as the year rolled on,” he said. “I can win my own ball, and do get plenty of it, but I needed to get better at using it, so that was probably where I was able to lift my game the most.” Bharathi said winning a league best and fairest and premiership in his first year of senior football opened his eyes to just how much the game and the club meant to some people. “I didn’t really understand what it takes to put a senior team on the park,” he said. “I was part of the junior program, and I didn’t really think there was much importance behind it, but when you play senior footy you see all the volunteers and you realise how important football is to some people and to the local community more importantly.

“That was the biggest eye-opener for me, so to take this team to div 1 was awesome.” For Bharathi, the focus now turns to his future, and he has some big decisions to make as he weighs up offers from Footscray, Werribee and Collingwood in the VFL. “There’s nothing concrete yet, so I’ll hopefully do a pre-season down at one of those clubs, get on a VFL list and then hopefully end up playing AFL one day,” he said. “We’ll see how we go. It’s mainly deciding whether to go with an AFL affiliated club or a stand-alone club, so it’s about figuring out what’s going to be best for me and where I can show my traits and expose myself to the higher level and recruiters. “There’s a lot of things to consider, but hopefully sooner than later I’ll make a call.” Ewen McRae Karan Bharathi took out the WRFL’s Alan Smith Medal recently. By Ewen McRae Lucas Rocci is keeping a level head, but he could be on the verge of continuing a strong recent trend from the NAB League. The Western Jets captain recently won the Morrish Medal as the best and fairest player in the state under-18 competition, and despite missing out on selection for the national championships and not receiving an invite to the AFL draft combines, he is keeping his fingers crossed for a fairytale draft night. “I’ve just got to wait it out and see what happens from here,” Rocci said. “There’s definitely some interest there that I can’t really say much about, but I just hope I can get on a list and show what I can do.” If he is picked up, it will continue a strong recent run of Morrish medallists making an impact in the AFL – Clayton Oliver, Hugh McCluggage, Jack Higgins and Liam Stocker all won the award on their way to being drafted in the past four seasons. Oliver, now a two-time best and fairest winner at Melbourne, also missed national championship and combine selection. “There’s so many stories of players missing out in under-18s and getting drafted and having success, so that does give me hope,” Rocci said. “Look at someone like Kane Lambert. Missed getting drafted, came back and now he’s a two-time premiership player at Richmond, so we’ll just see what happens from here. “I took a few weeks off to recharge the batteries, but I’m back in some gym and running work now to keep myself ready.” Rocci put together a stellar year for the Jets, flourishing in the second half when he moved to half-back to utilise his elite disposal. He was selected on the bench in the team of the year, but said he was shocked when he started to creep up the leaderboard in the medal count as well. “It was pretty amazing, because I wasn’t expecting to win anything when I went along,” he said. “Missing Vic Metro was disappointing, but anyone who misses has a bit of extra motivation. I just looked at it as ‘footy is footy’ and just keep playing and see where it takes you. “All we wanted to do was get better as a team and as people, and I think everyone in our side can say we did that. The medal is just the icing on the cake.” Rocci is the first Jets player to take home the award, and he said he was proud to show that the western suburbs can produce. “It’s definitely special, and I’m very honoured,” he said.

A convincing all-round display from Williamstown has it well placed in its sub-district cricket opener against Balwyn. Williamstown won the toss in the trip to the eastern suburbs, and sent the hosts in to bat, but found the early going tough as the home side put on a strong opening stand. Balwyn put on 50 for the first wicket before Fraser Hay (1-18) got the breakthrough, and from there the Seagulls never looked back. Regular wickets fell as the home side crumbled, with Brent McMinn (3-11), Nathan Bratby (2-6) and Jarrod Flood-Bauce (2-18) ripping through the middle and late order to dismiss the hosts for just 104. With 25 overs to bat late in the day, Williamstown was able to recover from the early loss of James Cook (7) to seize control of the game. Opener James Grixti (61 not out) combined with McMinn (41) to guide Williamstown to first innings points, and while McMinn fell just before stumps the Seagulls will resume at 2-114 and in control of the contest. Elsewhere, Yarraville had an up and down day in its clash with Endeavour Hills, but ended it with victory still a real possibility. Batting first after being sent in by the hosts, Yarraville lost Aidan Salvado for just two, but was able to consolidate through Josh Hahnel (54), Sam Shearer (16) and Kasey Duncan (48). Together that trio got the visitors to a respectable score, and while the lower order fell away late in the day, Yarraville was able to post 175. A late spell with the ball improved Yarraville’s chances of an early season win, with Mitchell Cross picking up two wickets to leave Endeavour Hills 2-22 at stumps. Bulldogs’ stars lead the way to victory A new season of Premier Cricket for Footscray has begun with a win, and some familiar faces were once again the stars. The Dogs travelled to play Kingston Hawthorn in an opening round one-dayer on Saturday, and after a clinical display with both ball and bat they took the points back to the kennel. It was the familiar pairing of Dean Russ and Travis Dean who were the stars of the day, with the long-time teammates combining for an unbroken 193-run stand to guide the Dogs home. Russ was imperious as he crafted 116 from just 121 balls, and with Dean rattling off 75 of his own they were able to chase down the Hawks’ 7-223 in just 37 overs. New Footscray coach Allan Wise said the class of Dean and Russ shone through on the day. “As a coach you love to have those two guys in your side,” Wise said. “We lost the early wicket and the Hawks had some momentum and were up and about, but Russy just loves batting and he’s in the stage

of his career now where he’s at the peak of his powers in regards to his knowledge bag of situations. “And then obviously Trav is a class act, so the two of them in combination have played a lot of cricket together and once they got through their first 20-30 balls it was going to be hard to remove them.” Earlier, it was the Footscray bowling group who showed they would be a force this season, restricting the home side to a gettable total on a good wicket. Clubbers pile on runs By Ewen McRae The Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division season is off to the perfect start for Yarraville Club, as they cashed in late in the day against Strathmore. After being surprisingly sent in to bat, the Clubbers openers did the hard work early and kept wickets in hand, allowing the middle order to attack late in the day as they got to stumps at 5-325. While star batsman Will Sheridan hit 104 at close to a run-a-ball, it was the hard work of openers Aaron Cheesley (64) and James Damjanovski (52) that laid the platform for the big total. Captain Trent Lawford said he was hoping to bat, and praised the work of his top order. “It was almost the perfect day,” Lawford said. “I was surprised they sent us in. I looked at the pitch and had planned to bat, so when Strathmore said they’d bowl I felt like I’d won the toss anyway. “Young Aaron Cheesley, just 21-years-old, made his first 50 in first XI cricket, and with Damjanovski they put on 120 for the first wicket, so they did the hard work early. “Strathmore bowled really well, but we left wickets in hand and then cashed in at the end of the day. We wouldn’t have been able to get that score if the boys didn’t do the hard yards early on.” While both Cheesley and Damjanovski fell close together, Sheridan showed his years of experience to combine with Andrew Cullen (29), Lawford (31) and Jaspreet Bhatti (39) through the rest of the day to keep the scoreboard ticking over rapidly. Sheridan raised the bat late in the day, remaining unbeaten at the close of play as the Clubbers showed they would once again be among the contenders this summer. Lawford said the mix of experience and youth in the side this year would stand them in good stead, with five players making their first XI debuts for the club at the weekend. “We’ve obviously got some senior guys, but we’ve also got some young guys pushing up from the twos and some new guys coming to the club as well,” he said. “Aaron Cheesley has been at the club for a while but is making a mark now, young Connor Poulton the keeper is just 16, Jaspreet [Bhatti] has moved from New Zealand and is straight into the ones, so there’s some new faces to get used to and liven up the group. “It’s a different look team, but we’ve put in a lot of work and the rewards are there to see so far. “There’s still a long way to go, even in this game, but with runs on the board now we can attack for a lot longer in the field, and we know
