When Elwyn Davies braves the cold mornings on his bike, he does so with some wheely strong motivation – raising funds for children in need. The Footscray nurse has been training for next month’s Around the Bay challenge, when he will join more than 10,000 cyclists from all over the country in Australia’s biggest bike ride. The October 6 event aims to raise more than $600,000 for children’s education charity The Smith Family to assist with its learning support and mentoring programs. Mr Davies, 62, said he last took on the gruelling 210-kilometre ride about a decade ago and was looking forward to giving it another go. “It’s a good motivation knowing that The Smith Family is a very good, practical charity,” he said. Seddon scales new heights By Benjamin Millar A multi-storey apartment development housing about 1000 people on the former Transdev bus depot site in Seddon has been given the green light by the state’s planning tribunal. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal last week approved ANPLUS Developments’ plans to build more than 400 apartments and townhouses across four buildings up to 11 storeys high – almost double the site’s preferred height limit. They found the council’s six-storey preferred height limit was a “discretionary control” that can be exceeded according to the merits of an individual proposal. The pair’s ruling stated that the 11-storey building on the corner of Albert and Buckley streets formed part of “a high quality architectural and urban design response” to

the site. “The buildings display a high level of articulation through a range of high quality building materials, interesting and varied façade treatments, and a good level of activation of the street frontages at the lower levels.” The members also found the project created an acceptable transition in scale from the larger buildings to the adjacent low scale residential area. “We also consider that the extent of public open space proposed on the review site provides a context which supports the achievement of greater building heights elsewhere on the site,” they stated. “We consider that the location and setting of this public open space will likely create a significant public benefit for the surrounding neighbourhood.”

Backlash over China ‘exchange’ By Benjamin Millar A community outcry has forced Maribyrnong’s mayor to abandon a proposal to forge a ‘friendly exchange’ relationship with a district in China. Cr Martin Zakharov flagged a motion ahead of last week’s council meeting that recommended Maribyrnong council enter a relationship with Wuxi-Huishan District in Jiangsu, China, and explore further opportunities for cementing the exchange into a ‘sister city’ relationship. The proposal raised the ire of the area’s large

Vietnamese community, which turned out in force at the meeting and forced the mayor to withdraw the motion despite it already being published on the agenda. Resident Celia Tran, addressing the councillors, said the issue was clearly close to the hearts of many in the Vietnamese, Tibetan and Uyghur communities, “many of whom have been oppressed by the Chinese government”. “Whilst we welcome partnerships with international cities … the choice of city is very important, that we stand by the principles and values which we were founded upon, which

is human rights and democracy,” she said. “I would highly recommend you look into other strategic partnerships.” Vietnamese Community in Australia (VCA) Victorian chapter vice-president Phong Nguyen told the meeting that although he welcomed the motion being withdrawn, he was concerned it had even been considered. “We encourage cities to make friends with other cities around the world … however we should only makes friends with careful consideration,” he said. “We cannot just blindly be friends with dictatorships, with regimes that

really go against our values.” Mr Nguyen said given Maribyrnong’s role as a home for victims of oppressive regimes, it should be working to become a beacon of freedom. “We are Maribyrnong and we do have a history, we are the combination of many migrants and refugees among our community and that must count for something.” Cr Zakharov said about 50 councils in Australia including 10 in Melbourne already have friendship relationships with China, but he wouldn’t be discussing the merits of the proposal given he had withdrawn the motion.

Beach, parks off limits for plastic ban

Australia’s oldest BP turns on the gas Australia’s oldest running BP petrol station has reopened after an upgrade. BP Williamstown, at 261-269 Melbourne Road, was the third BP service station built in Australia, but the first two are no longer operational. The family business, which was built on or close to a former railyard, was bought by its current owners in 2008. James Ibrahim said his grandfather, Jamil, migrated from Lebanon to Australia and settled in the Newport area where he originally worked on the railways. “

I’m a third generation Williamstown boy, with both my father growing up here and grandfather migrating over and landing in Williamstown,” he said. “My parents purchased the site from a man named Alby. “Alby was a mechanic by trade and the fuel side was always secondary. My uncle came past with my mum and negotiated an offer in 2008 and the business changed hands, and since then have built it up to what it is now.” Andrew Waugh, the editor of Somersault, published by the Signalling Record Society Victoria, said Victorian Railways maintained a

mechanical signal school at Newport at or near the service station site. “Certainly the signal school was around that location,” he said. “I couldn’t guarantee that it was exactly on that (BP) site but the signal school was certainly on Melbourne Road around that location.” Some local residents took to social media to express excitement the BP had reopened, but not for the reasons you’d expect – they were keen to know they could buy confectionary snakes again.

Hobsons Bay council is developing a single use plastic policy but doesn’t have the authority to ban it from beaches and parks. At its meeting last week the council was responding to a petition by Newport resident Abigail McAsey that called for a ban on plastic items such as bags and bottles at beaches and parks. The council currently lacks the authority to prevent a product’s use at beaches or parks, according to an officer’s report. “An exception to this is the smoking ban on Altona and Williamstown beaches, which was implemented in 2011 under council’s local laws and is enforced by council’s environmental health local laws team with assistance from Victoria Police,” the report stated. A statewide ban on areas of patrolled beaches was introduced in 2012 under the Tobacco Act. Cr Sandra Wilson said if the council could ban single use plastic it would. “I’d love it if we could ban single use plastic on beaches but it’s just not practical because if you ban something you actually have to be able to enforce it, and that’s just problematic.” Councillors voted to continue to encourage the reduction or elimination of single use plastic by developing a policy. They will also continue community education, seek partnerships with local traders to provide alternatives and advocate to other levels of government to help prevent the use of single use plastics.

Wine arrest

A Williamstown man has been charged with stealing a number of items including wine valued about $10,000 belonging to a high-end Yarraville restaurant. About 260 bottles of wine were stolen from the storeroom beneath Navi restaurant on Gamon Street about 5am on August 5, along with thousands of dollars of items from storage cages. A 37-year-old Williamstown man was arrested last Wednesday and has been charged with burglary, theft and criminal damage. He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on October 1.

Police are investigating a report of a man breaking into a car in Galvin Street, Altona, about 3am on Saturday, September 7. Police have been told the victim, a 34-year-old Altona woman, attempted to intervene and the man produced what is believed to have been a weapon before leaving the scene. No one was injured during the incident.

Stony Creek access plan ditched By Benjamin Millar Authorities have been forced to ditch plans to remove warnings for contact with water in Stony Creek following a backlash from concerned locals. Star Weekly earlier this month reported that 12 months after millions of litres of toxic run-off from the Tottenham warehouse fire flooded the creek, the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) was intending to remove contact warnings for the creek water. However the plan has been rebuffed by a group set up to advise on Stony Creek’s rehabilitation, despite creek water coming

back within recreational guidelines for human contact. EPA regional manager Stephen Lansdell said water quality in Stony Creek has greatly improved since the fire, with chemicals such as PFAS, benzenes and acetone now within guidelines or below detectable levels. “Melbourne Water has done considerable work to remove the most heavily contaminated creek sediment between the fire site and Paramount Road, which has significantly reduced immediate risk to downstream environments,” he said. EPA scientists, with advice from Victoria’s Chief Veterinarian office, consequently drafted

new signage for the creek. The signage allowed contact with the creek except after heavy rain, and allowed dogs to swim but advised that they be washed after as a precaution. Deidre Anderson, Maribyrnong council’s representative on the Stakeholder Advisory Group, said the EPA told the group at a recent meeting of its intention to downgrade Stony Creek’s contact warnings to the same as other urban waterways. Ms Anderson said the group believed this decision failed to take into consideration the usage of the creek. “It is widely used as a crossing, particularly by children to get to schools [and childcare centres] such as Clare

Court and Kingsville Primary,” she said. “Since Cruickshank Park is also an off-lead dog park, children and dogs enter the creek and it is not feasible to prevent stirring up sediment or to prevent dogs from drinking the water.” The group wrote to the EPA and Melbourne Water arguing the change in warnings also failed to reflect the historic industrial contamination of the creek, the catastrophic effects of the warehouse fire, and the need for further remediation. Mr Lansdell said following the feedback, and considering further remediation works are planned, EPA will ditch the new signs for the time-being.

Out of the shadows A Seddon performer will be emerging from the shadows to explore the fusion of international musical traditions this Sunday. Trumpeter Peter Knight, the artistic director of Australian Art Orchestra (AAO), will be joined by traditional Korean bamboo flutist Hyelim Kim and other performers for Leaf and Shadow, the first concert in the Meeting Points Shadow Series taking place at The Pavilion in the Arts Centre. The series, curated by Knight, will be an intimate collection of concerts bringing together musical styles from across the globe in unexpected collaborations. Renowned for breathing new life into traditional and modern works, Kim will perform both traditional Korean compositions as well as her own contemporary works in Leaf and Shadow.

As well as Knight on trumpet and electronics, Kim will be joined by renowned Australian jazz drummer Simon Barker, violinist Pei Ann Yeoh from Kuala Lumpur, and vocalist Bae Il Dong from Seoul. Knight said the concert reflects the vibrancy of borderless contemporary music and daring improvisations, by exploring the fusion of traditional Korean sounds, percussive rhythms and experimental jazz nuances. 40 tablets a day sold to patient By Benjamin Millar A Yarraville pharmacist has been fined $100,000 for selling more than 50,000 painkillers to a patient over a three year period. Huyen Tran from Kingsville Pharmacy was convicted and fined after being charged over hundreds of contraventions of controlled substances legislation. Tran was found to have accepted fraudulent scripts and dispensed 52,368 tablets containing codeine and paracetamol to the patient between 2015 and 2018 – about 40 tablets per

day, escalating to 57 tablets per day by the time the sales triggered an investigation in 2018. The pharmacist, who has been registered in the profession since 1997, faced Sunshine Magistrates Court last month after pleading guilty to 10 charges relating to 457 separate contraventions of the law between May 2015 and October 2018. The health department launched an investigation last October after identifying the patient had obtained the highest dose of codeine-containing analgesics in Victoria from Tran’s pharmacy between June and October

that year. Tran told investigators that she didn’t suspect anything was amiss because the patient was a regular customer of the pharmacy. The offences included supplying Schedule 4 poisons to a patient on 281 occasions upon prescriptions which she had reason to believe had been fraudulently altered, and supply of codeine-containing analgesics to a patient on nine occasions in excess of the instructions written on the prescriptions. Tran was found to have failed to notify the department on 167 occasions that she was being

requested to dispense codeine-containing analgesics to a person in greater quantities or more frequently than appeared necessary. As well as the $100,000 fine, Tran must pay $10,708 in legal costs. Her registration as a pharmacist was also suspended in March. Medicines containing codeine – the fourth most common drug linked with overdose deaths in Victoria – are only available via prescription. A Pharmacy Board of Australia spokeswoman confirmed that Tran was suspended on March 12 this year and inquiries are ongoing.

A wallaby is on the hop in Williamstown. There has been a confirmed sighting at Williamstown Botanic Gardens, and a member of the public believes they may have seen the wallaby at Jawbone Conservation Reserve. Williamstown Botanic Gardens head gardener Michael Wilkins was arriving for work about 6.20am on Tuesday when he saw what he thought was a kangaroo. It jumped across a path just metres from the main gates at the corner of Osborne and Giffard streets. “It came out of the bushes, went straight across past the big botryoides tree and just disappeared,” Mr Wilkins said. “So, I go running through. Lost sight of him. “Thought it was a kangaroo, of course, because it was bouncing along. “When I saw it again, about 20 minutes later, it was over on the far side of the gardens and it was definitely a wallaby. He was a reasonable

By Goya Dmytryshchak An $11 million upgrade of seven Hobsons Bay sports grounds is being rolled out, along with pavilion redevelopments of $4.6 million for JT Gray Reserve and $600,000 for Fearon Reserve. Hobsons Bay council has awarded nearly $11 million for sports ground redevelopment contracts, including lighting and irrigation improvements. Last week’s council meeting heard that awarding the tender as a package resulted in $2 million in savings. Upgrades totalling

$10,975,346 will be undertaken at Bayside College at Newport, Donald McLean Reserve at Spotswood, Digman Reserve at Newport, WLJ Crofts Reserve at Altona North, Altona Green Park at Altona Meadows and Fearon Reserve at Williamstown. Separate contracts were awarded for the $4,593,952 design and construction of JT Gray Reserve pavilion and $633,565 for the Fearon Reserve lacrosse pavilion. Cr Peter Hemphill told the meeting that upgrading facilities, including installation of competition-grade floodlighting, would increase their use.

“Part of the issue is that the influx of women into sports such as Aussie rules football has made it imperative that we do this to spread the usage of our sports grounds,” he said. Construction of a carpark and pavilion at Gray Reserve, which caters for regional soccer and cricket competitions, is due to start next month and will take about 12 months. The Fearon Reserve project to restore and upgrade the original 1928 lacrosse pavilion at will start later this month and take about four months. The council has established a five-year sports ground redevelopment program to upgrade 17 reserves.

Footscray real estate stalwart Frank Trimboli has died. Mr Trimboli, 78, passed away on September 11 following a two-year battle with cancer. A long-standing real estate agent, he started Frank Trimboli Real Estate (now Trimson Partners) about 60 years ago. Mr Trimboli was well known for his love of Footscray and community support, holding charity functions for the Western Hospital, lecturing at Footscray Institute, serving as a member of Rotary, and throwing his support behind his beloved Western Bulldogs. John Verduci, his business partner at Trimson Partners, said Mr Trimboli will be sadly missed by his wife Frances, his family and staff. “Frank lived for real estate, being the past president of the REIV in 1993-94 and sitting on various board and committees,” he said. A funeral mass will be held at 10.30am Friday at St Patricks Cathedral, East Melbourne, followed by a burial ceremony at Melbourne General Cemetery.

Rail-under-road backed By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council last week endorsed rail-under-road as the community’s preferred option for the level crossing removal at North Williamstown train station. Councillors voted to back the view of the Ferguson Street Williamstown Level Crossing Community Interest Group (CIG) in lobbying Public Transport Minister and Williamstown MP Melissa Horne. Cr Peter Hemphill told last week’s council meeting that a huge pedestrian underpass going under the Kororoit Creek Road roundabout had also been suggested. A small underpass at the station was filled in under a Liberal state government in 2014. “What the residents are suggesting is a much larger underpass that goes from the station gate underneath the roundabout over to the Rifle Club Hotel,” Cr Hemphill told the meeting. “I hope that the government heeds the idea and whatever outcome they come up with that is one of the things that makes traffic flow a bit better through there, and it’s an interesting concept.” Cr Hemphill said he believed the state government had already decided to build a rail over the road. “We’ve been told that each of the crossing removals costs about $160 million … but some of them have been far in excess of that,” he said. “This is a very sensitive crossing removal and I don’t think the costs should be an impediment. “My mail is that they’ve [the government] already made up their mind and that it’s rail over – and I’m hearing that from government sources.” Williamstown Crossing Group spokesman Lorenzo de Falco, who is also on the CIG,

welcomed the council’s endorsement of rail-under-road as the preferred grade separation option. “Rail under road is the only grade separation option that preserves the unique historical character of Williamstown as opposed to rail

over road, which would overshadow dozens of family homes and the kindergarten located along the rail corridor,” he said. “WCG expects the government to respect the council’s position, given the critical significance of this level crossing removal.”

The developer behind a 12-storey residential complex with almost 270 dwellings is seeking to scrap more than 80 parking spaces from the Maribyrnong project. Developer Hengmao wants to delete one of the three basement parking levels in the $80 million development at 19-21 White Street, cutting 82 of the 374 car spaces included in the approved plans. The developer wants to re-allocate all 40 visitor car spaces to residents, creating a total of 258 residential spaces – previously 300 – plus 34 car spaces reserved for retail use. A planning submission letter to the council argues that because the council already allowed for a car parking reduction when it approved the 268-unit development last year, it is able to consider a further reduction. The developer wants to take advantage of new state laws that reduce car parking requirements near public transport, introduced three months after the planning permit was issued. “We note, the subject site is located with the Principal Public Transport Network indicating that no visitor car spaces are required for the proposed development,” the letter states. “As a result, we seek to have no visitors car parking. “The subject site is well located within proximity to identified public transport routes.”

Club pays tribute to a character By Tate Papworth Football clubs are built around characters. The Braybrook Football Club has been blessed with some great characters in its 145 years – including legends such as Ted Whitten and Doug Hawkins. One name not as widely known is Shawn Marion. Shawn never played the game at the highest level, but he gave everything he had for more than two decades at the club he loved. Sadly, Shawn’s life was cut short late on the evening of August 10. Shawn was struck by a car as he crossed Ballarat Road, making his way home from a

day at the club. Braybrook Sporting Club president Bryan Patten said it was a loss that’s shaken the club. “Shawn was one of those guys that whether you knew him 10 years or five minutes, it felt like you’d known him forever. “He will be missed by all. There’s a big gap left without him, but he’ll be remembered forever.” Mr Patten said Shawn was the ultimate clubman. “He’d been down here for at least 20 years, he was one of those blokes that was always down here. “He played footy, but he loved to come down for a beer and even volunteer – he was always

happy to umpire, fill in at the last minute or man the canteen. I coached him last year. It’s true he was always keen to volunteer, but he wasn’t big on training. “He loved an excuse for why he couldn’t train, then he’d ring you on Friday night and ask if he was in.” In a mark of respect, the club has now renamed the canteen after Shawn. However, he was more than a clubman. Shawn’s sister Virginia said he was the best brother, uncle and son a family could ask for. “He looked after everyone. He had such a special relationship with mum,” she said. “He was just the best guy. He’d give you his last five dollars, that’s the type of guy he was.”

Walk to better health Hobsons Bay students are this month being urged to walk to school. Hobsons Bay UP – the council’s youth services – has teamed up with VicHealth to get children out of cars and hitting the pavement for Walk to School Month from October 7 to November 1. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said parents and carers could start small. “Parents pressed for time could add one more active trip per week than usual or park away from the school and walk for a bit,” he said. “Make it fun and meet up with other families along the way. “Getting out of the car and hitting the pavement helps children develop important road safety and travel skills. It also reduces

the number of cars on the road around school drop-off and pick-up times.” Last year, more than 140,000 children from 740 Victorian schools participated in the initiative, travelling the equivalent distance of two return trips to the moon. Work has started on the new “heart” of Williamstown Hospital after much love from the local community. Preparatory work began this week ahead of construction starting in October on the $2.5 million hospital redevelopment. Donors have fully funded the upgrade through the Western Health Foundation’s Heart of Williamstown appeal launched three years ago. Unlike most hospitals, Williamstown’s, which opened in 1894, lacks outdoor spaces for patients and visitors. The upgrade includes a new facade and a community hub in the heart of the hospital, with courtyards and gardens for patient rehabilitation and exercise. The foyer will be transformed into a vastly expanded visitor and patient lounge area with a covered walkway to the hospital cafe. Founding member of the appeal fundraising committee George Kallifidas said Williamstown would benefit from the work being done. “Growing up in Williamstown and now raising my family here, I have a lot of strong memories of our hospital,” he said. “I was really excited to be part of the fundraising committee and couldn’t be happier that this project is getting under way. “A lot of locals have played a role in making this upgrade a reality and as a community we should all feel proud.” Western Health Foundation director Julia

Council honours past president By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona’s first shire president from an immigrant background, Gerardus “Gerry” den Dulk (8-11-1923 – 11-8-2019), was last week honoured by Hobsons Bay council. Mr den Dulk’s daughter Betty Brown and her husband Dennis Brown attended last week’s council meeting as mayor Jonathon Marsden read out a moving tribute. Born in Scheveningen, Netherlands, Mr den Dulk was part of the Dutch resistance during World War 2.

“As a member of the Dutch underground, Gerry helped establish the first link between occupied Holland and the Dutch government in England in May 1940,” Cr Marsden told the meeting. “He was captured and sent as slave labour to Germany in 1942 but escaped, survived the war by going into hiding for two years in Holland, and was tried by German court [in absentia] and sentenced to death for sabotage.” Mr den Dulk and his wife, Leny, started a new life in Australia, first at a camp in Bathurst and later moving into a bungalow in Altona before building their own home. He worked at the Mobil refinery in the mid 1950s and was badly burned in a fire in which a fellow worker died. He was elected to the Altona Shire council in 1959 and served three terms, and in 1963 became the first person from a non-English speaking country elected president.

A body camera, worn on a police officer’s uniform, is used to record video and audio footage. From this week, police on general duties and Highway Patrol officers, of the rank of sergeant and below, will wear the cameras while working in Wyndham and Hobsons Bay. - Russell Barrett Wyndham North police stations. Victoria Police aim to start rolling out 11,000 body cameras to officers by next year. Assistant Commissioner Russell Barrett said the body cameras would boost police capabilities in the west.

“The introduction of body-worn cameras is expected to deliver improved community safety, enhanced evidence gathering, increased police safety and accountability,” he said. “The initial pilot we conducted in April 2018 showed us that camera usage policies, infrastructure and training for police had worked well and police were comfortable using the technology within their first one or two shifts. “Given the pleasing results of their function, along with the overwhelmingly positive

feedback from the community, we are in the process of rolling the cameras out to more officers.” Assistant Commissioner Barrett said officers would undertake regular training which includes the use and functions of the body camera. Police may turn on the cameras in situations where they interact with the public, exercise police powers, arrest someone, issue an infringement, collect evidence, conduct vehicle stops and undertake drug or alcohol tests.

Protection a step closer Maribyrnong council has thrown its support behind moves to help protect the former Footscray Psychiatric Centre from demolition. Heritage Victoria has asked the Heritage Council of Victoria to place the 1970s-era landmark on the Victorian Heritage Register, citing its “bold Brutalist design” and important role in “deinstitutionalization” of the treatment of psychiatric illnesses. Maribyrnong councillors last week voted to endorse a submission backing the four-storey concrete monolith being included on the register. A council report noted the site is considered to be of architectural and historical significance to Victoria, including the building, trees, paving, ramps and landscaping. The building – dubbed ‘The Bunker’ soon after it was built – was designed by an unknown architect working within the Public Works Department and opened in 1977.

The council’s heritage advisor agreed the former hospital is important to the course, or pattern of Victoria’s cultural history. The report recommended minor changes to Heritage Victoria’s nomination to ensure significant trees are protected, to recognise Aboriginal Australians, and to set timeframes for conservation management plans. It notes that inclusion on the register does not prevent a place from being altered or in some circumstances demolished, nor does it prevent a change of use or prevent it from being sold. The hospital permanently closed in the late 1990s and serves as storage space for Footscray Hospital. A new $1.5 billion hospital is being built on the other side of Footscray, paving the way for redevelopment of the existing site. Benjamin Millar

Silent landscapes speak volumes By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona photographer Russell Cassar has ventured where no tourists go to capture extreme images for his first solo exhibition. Silent Landscape will be launched next month in the suburb that remains his favorite photographic subject – Altona. The lifelong Hobsons Bay resident grew up fishing around Altona and some of his favorite sites to photograph include Altona Pier, the reef off Millers Road and around the old ammunition pier. His exhibition will feature 20 blown-up images, mostly of Altona but also of Williamstown and Victoria’s high country and northern and western regions. “In the beginning, I only focused on Altona and Williamstown but since then I’ve branched out,” Cassar said. “I do a lot of travel so I’ve got the opportunity to get away quite a bit and go camping all over Victoria and New South Wales. “So, I take the opportunity to take some images – I’m up early anyway. “All the images are moody … so extreme weather, whether it be foggy or raining or stormy weather. “I try to avoid the touristy areas – I go where there are no tourists, so a little extreme in that way.” Completely self-taught, Cassar now runs evening photography workshops from aboard Sea Shepherd’s decommissioned flagship vessel, the Steve Irwin, moored at Williamstown. All images from his exhibition, along with his 2020 calendars, will be for sale. Silent Landscape will be launched at Altona’s Joel Gallery on October 11 and runs until October 24.

MY PLACE Footscray ceramicist and keen home gardener David Elliot will be opening his garden oasis to visitors this weekend. He speaks with Benjamin Millar. What’s your connection with the inner-west? My partner and I moved to Yarraville in 2000, from East St Kilda, as it was more affordable at the time. I was frustrated by the limited gardening space we had, so in 2009 we moved to our current house in Footscray, with a much bigger backyard. What do you like most about the area? I love the diversity in the people and shops, and how resistant it has been to gentrification despite the changing demographics. What are your favourite local places? I love the Plough Hotel for pizza, Sapa Hills for Vietnamese, any of the East African restaurants, and Los Polos for Mexican.

What are the challenges and rewards? Keeping up the water in summer and managing pests, especially with the food producing plants, are the biggest challenges. The rewards come in the form of the flowers, fabulous foliage and fruit and vegetables. What can you tell us about your ceramics? My interest in ceramics was reignited when I began making hanging pots for my orchid collection and it has evolved into my current business “buzzby and fang”, named after our

What spurred your love of gardening? There was a latent interest as I grew up, with parents who were keen gardeners. I was a late bloomer and I think pursuing ceramics in my 30s helped me develop an appreciation of form and colour which I eventually found in plants and landscaping.

He rates it up there with his most joyous moments in his long and distinguished playing and coaching career. “To be honest, it still hasn’t really sunk in,” he said. “It’s unbelievable, massive. “I’ve played in premierships, I’ve coached boys footy, but the women’s is a different dynamic, it’s great.” Theodorou has long held the belief that Spotswood is a family club. “The great thing about the Spotswood footy club is that we’re one footy club with many teams,” he said. Eagles are finally flying high By Lance Jenkinson Yarraville Seddon will no longer have to talk about those wretched three consecutive grand final losses in the Western Region Football League division 2. The Eagles changed the narrative on Sunday with a 67-point thrashing of Wyndhamvale in the 2019 grand final at Avalon Airport Oval. They silenced all the doubters and answered every question emphatically to record the biggest winning margin in a division 2 decider since Deer Park’s 131-point belting of Albanvale in 2011. Eagles coach Vinnie Turcinovich had only been involved in one of those three grand final defeats between 2016-18 and only three players featured in all three, but it did not stop all the chatter about whether his side could handle the pressure of a big occasion. “It still hasn’t hit me that we’re premiers,” Turcinovich said. “Losing last year, my first year, and winning this year, it’s just a credit to the boys. “They worked so hard to get here again. “I thought we were the best team, even considering they [Wyndhamvale] ended up on top. “We wanted to be the best team in September when it counted.” After a tight opening to the game, Wyndhamvale kicked the first goal 11 minutes in through playing-coach Chris Moreland from a set shot. Nathan Bisset made it two in a row with a nice crumbing goal and it looked like the Falcons were on. Yarraville Seddon took some time to settle, but they had the better of the latter part of the first quarter. Sam Faure showed nerves of steel to goal from a set shot tight on the boundary and then Matthew Taylor pounced on a Wyndhamvale defensive error to put the Eagles in front for the first time. The Eagles took a slight lead at quarter-time and never relinquished it. With the rain setting in and lights switched on, Yarraville Seddon took its game up to another level. The Eagles created further separation on the scoreboard when James Backway was left unattended on the edge of the square and ran in for a team-lifting goal from 50 metres on the run. Brandon Lester had patrolled the half back line for Yarraville Seddon the whole first half and he provided an assist for Varsamakis to put through the Eagles fifth consecutive goal for a 23-point lead.

The only goal joy Wyndhamvale had in the second came courtesy of a 50-metre penalty, slotted by Liam Scarborough. In an instant, that was responded to by Yarraville Seddon, who got a quick clearance and went long and strong to Varsamakis, who was impeded in the marking contest and goaled from the resulting free kick to give the Eagles four goals breathing space at half-time. Varsamakis was huge in the first half. “He took a few marks, but he just competed in the air,” Turcinovich said. “He was hard to beat.” Wyndhamvale, lifted by Scarborough and Jack Tessari, gave it their best shot early in the third quarter, but just could not put it on the scoreboard. After five minutes of sustained Falcons pressure, Yarraville Seddon went up the other end and goaled against the run of play through Andrejs Everitt.

It was all one-way traffic thereafter with Yarraville Seddon piling on eight goals to one in the second half. The most memorable part of the game was Everitt’s incredible last quarter. He finished with three goals. Young Yarraville Seddon wingman Karan Bharathi claimed the best-on-ground medal. In division 1, Spotswood was eliminated from the finals, going down by 27 points to Deer Park. It has set up a grand final between six-time defending premiers Deer Park and minor premiers Altona at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. In division 3, Glen Orden claimed the premiership with a 26-point win over Albanvale in the grand final at the VU Whitten Oval. Big race rower puts small club on the map Samuel Wilson is proud to represent the relatively small Footscray City Rowing Club at elite levels. Wilson is proof you do not have to be from one of the bigger city clubs to enjoy success in top level competitions. The 16-year-old has dominated in his age level in Victoria this year, winning the under 17s singles title at the state championships and reigning in the Herald and Sporting Globe Shield, a six-week handicap event. Wilson is using his success to promote Footscray City and the sport of rowing in the local area. “We’ve got quite an under-represented club in the juniors,” he said. “To be able to win those competitions and represent the club, it shows that even quite a small club can still produce athletes that can win high level awards. “We need more people down here. “Come and get on the river.” Wilson loves the thrill of race day. When it comes to the final 500 metres of a two kilometre race, he is in his element. “It’s a great sport to do,” he said. “I enjoy the people I’ve met along the way and I love racing. “The best part is when you’ve got to put

everything on the line, especially when you’ve come from the back and you’re racing to get to the front, it’s what I like about the races.” Wilson’s year kicked off on a high with success at the state championships. It gave the West Footscray resident the green light to represent Victoria at the national championships in Penrith. Unfortunately, that is where Wilson’s low point of the season came. The year 11 student at Footscray City College was not afforded the chance to show his best form. “I was really sick at the time, so I wasn’t able to perform at the level I would have liked to,” Wilson said. “My aim is to go back again next year, which will be a bit tougher because I’ll be going in as under-age.” Wilson got healthy in time to compete in the prestigious Herald and Sporting Globe Shield. The event has been held on the Yarra River since 1927 and consists of six handicap races over a two kilometre course. Wilson won five of the six races to take out the shield. Each race he started from the back of the field and worked his way to the front. Wilson secured the shield after the sixth and

final race – the only leg he did not win. He only needed to better the points of one of his closest rivals to take out the shield, so he competed in a more tactical fashion. “It’s quite an honour to win that shield because it’s been going for nearly 100 years,” Wilson said. Wilson is the September nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western

Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. The Seagulls showed no scars from the previous three preliminary finals that ended in misery, advancing to the grand final with a 26-point win over Essendon at Adcon Stadium. Williamstown coach Andrew Collins and his players were fully aware of their 2-7 record in preliminary final games over the previous nine years and that makes this win all the more sweeter. “It shows great resilience,” Collins said. “The ability to come back and bounce back year after year is a real credit to the effort and the attitude of the players. “You get hit down and you get back up and that’s what the group is renowned for. “I’m really proud of them.” Williamstown will face Richmond in the season decider at Ikon Park on Sunday.

The Seagulls were a bit of an unknown quantity leading into the season because of the high amount of turnover at the top end of their list. They had three players, Ben Cavarra, Lachie Schultz and Brett Bewley, move on to AFL lists, and key departures included Ben Jolley, Peter Faulks and Lachie George. There seems to be a next-man-up policy at Williamstown with someone already ready and waiting for an opportunity. “I am so pleased for the boys because they’ve worked really hard for this opportunity,” Collins said. “Some of the players have been with me for six years, I think there’s seven or eight of them, they’ll be able to go into their second grand final. “There will be about eight or nine players who will be playing in their first grand final.” Williamstown made a blistering start in its win over Essendon. The Seagulls burst out to a 29-point quarter-time lead after a six-goal-to-one opening term.

Nick Meese was immense in the ruck for Williamstown. The big man had 24 disposals to go with a mammoth 70 hitouts. “I’d say it’s one of his best performances ever,” Collins said. Williamstown, shooting for its 17th flag overall and 15th in the top division, will go into the grand final as underdogs, having finished the season two-and-a-half games back from minor premiers Richmond and losing their only head-to-head battle by 51 points in round five. With his team in red hot form with victories in nine out of their past 10 games, Collins believes his side can get the job done in the grand final. “I think we’re better prepared than we were earlier in the season against them,” he said.

Footscray is through to not one, but two, Hockey Victoria premier league grand finals. The Bulldogs’ men’s and women’s teams both won through in their respective leagues to be involved in the feature games on the biggest day in Victorian hockey this Saturday. In men’s premier league, Footscray stormed into the grand final after a 5-1 smashing of MCC in the preliminary final at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Saturday evening. The full attacking arsenal of the Jarrod Lester-coached Bulldogs was on show as Liam Braithwaite, Lachlan Darcy, Simon Borger, Scott Shaw and Mitch Braiden found the back of the net in the rout. It has set up a grand final between the fourth-ranked finalist Footscray and minor premiers Southern United in the decider at the SNHC on Saturday at 6pm. In women’s premier league, Footscray produced an impressive comeback to beat Southern United 3-2 in the preliminary final at the SNHC on Saturday. The Bulldogs trailed by two goals before Gabrielle Minnett scored and Olivia Colasurdo fired in a double. The good news is the Y62 giant is still going; the bad news, thereâ€™s still no sign of a diesel option. Capable of carrying up to eight occupants, at more than five metres long and almost two metres wide, the top-of-the-range Ti-L, at $89,880, plus on road costs, can count its closest rival as the Toyota Land Cruiser LC 200 GLX, although the Patrol is more like the Sahara at $115,230. This is the most luxurious and sophisticated Nissan offered in Australia â€“ major gains have been won in fuel efficiency, comfort, luxury, quality and technology, for a top-class drive on and off-road. The 298 kW of power, put through the seven-speed automatic transmission and an electronically controlled, all mode 4WD system, all combined faultlessly to have the Patrol Ti-L test vehicle pushing on with little effort and a lot of composure, while keeping occupants in the comfort to which we could easily have become accustomed. The Patrol Ti-L is for those to whom size matters: those who want a giant shopping trolley; expansive people mover; or sophisticated prime mover that can pull a big boat or float, without paying top dollar. Others need not apply.
