Ebony steps up like a pro By Goya Dmytryshchak Sitting in her Yarraville home, Donna Howard shakes her right knee. It’s a sign for Ebony, a black labrador assistance dog, to jump up and use “pressure therapy” to calm Ms Howard. Ebony has turned Ms Howard’s life around after the navy veteran of nearly 20 years was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Ms Howard, 50, joined the navy at 17 as an apprentice helicopter technician. She doesn’t want to delve into what caused the PTSD. “When I got out, for a lot of years I was pretty much in complete denial that I had any sort of problems: depression or anxiety or even chronic neck pain and drinking and all the rest of it,” Ms Howard said. “I went through a few really bad years and tried to commit suicide a couple of times and put my family through hell.” Ms Howard received psychiatric support and started looking into service dogs. She heard about Integra, which takes failed Guide Dogs to see if they can work as service dogs for veterans and first responders. Ebony was deemed unsuitable as a guide dog because she was too sociable with other dogs. Ms Howard said since Ebony came along six months ago, she was taking hardly any medication and getting out as much as possible with Ebony. “Pills on four legs, they call them,” she said. Ebony licks Ms Howard’s face to wake her from nightmares – which she does instinctively. She also understands what Ms Howard needs when they leave the house. “If I’m going up to an ATM, she’ll stand behind me and block me,” Ms Howard said. “Or, if people are coming and getting into my personal space, she will stand in front of me. If I’m upset, she will come up and give me a cuddle.” The two have bonded so well they started playing golf together. Ebony is the first dog allowed onto Kooringal golf course at Altona – she doesn’t chase the golf balls. “Golf, I found, was the thing that I enjoyed and that would get me out of the house,” Ms Howard said. “The club’s been wonderful. We walk in after golf and they have my drink there and a big schooner of ice with water in it for Ebony.” Ebony and Ms Howard were each presented with a monthly medal by Kooringal Golf Club, which this week held its inaugural charity day supporting Integra in their honour. Whooping cough outbreak By Benjamin Millar Inner-west schools and childcare centres are urging parents to be on the alert for whooping cough symptoms in children after an outbreak of the potentially deadly illness at a Yarraville primary school. Parents have been warned to watch for warning signs and keep their children at home if they suspect they have caught pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, after 15 confirmed cases of the illness in children at Yarraville West Primary School.

The school last week sent parents a newsletter warning that pupils with whooping cough should not attend school until antibiotic treatment has been under way for at least five days. A health department spokesman said the department has been assisting Yarraville West

Primary School following a number of cases of whooping cough in students. “There have been 15 confirmed cases of the respiratory condition notified to the department,” he said. “The school has been provided with advice about exclusion periods for the affected children and also material to be shared with parents about the signs and symptoms of the condition.” The outbreak takes the number of whooping cough cases in Victoria this year to 1283, up from 1128 cases at the same time last year.

Firearms, drugs charges

Firearms, explosives and large quantities of drugs were uncovered in a series of raids on houses in Braybrook and Sunshine. Two men and a woman have been charged with a series of offences after a number of warrants were executed last Friday morning. A 55-year-old man arrested at a Braybrook property was charged with cultivating a commercial quantity of cannabis, possessing a commercial quantity of a drug of dependence and theft of electricity. Police seized a number of items from the property including 147 cannabis plants, an electrical bypass and various items used to grow cannabis. The man is believed to be an unlawful resident. A 23-year-old woman was arrested at another Braybrook property and charged with a range of drug offences and storing unauthorised explosives. Police seized items alleged to be cocaine, ecstasy, methylamphetamine, two presses, drug paraphernalia and explosives. The woman was bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates court for a filing hearing on September 15. A 34-year-old man arrested at a Sunshine property was charged with cultivating a drug of dependence, possessing drug of dependence, various firearm charges and theft of electricity. He was bailed to appear at the Sunshine Magistrates Court on November 21.

Michelle Newland knows a thing or two about overcoming adversity – now she’s giving a helping hand to those who need it most. Michelle was well on her way to achieving her dream of becoming a primary school teacher, completing the first year of her degree with results placing her in the top 10 per cent of her class. However, just three days after her 19th birthday, she suffered a near fatal asthma attack, resulting in a severe brain injury. Her brain was deprived of oxygen for 10 minutes and doctors told her family she’d remain in a vegetative state. They underestimated Michelle, who for 14 years has continued her rehabilitation journey, learning to eat, swallow, read and talk again. Today she runs her own business making greeting and special occasion cards and gives motivational talks in schools and workplaces. She’s now turning her attention to bottle tops. “We were driving home one day and we heard how Envision Hands are turning bottle tops into prosthetic limbs for people in Third World countries,” Michelle said. “I thought it was something we could do, so I researched online, made contact with Envision and started collecting. “I’ve had heaps of fun collecting these. It’s crazy to think they can turn these bottle tops into an arm or a leg,” she said. “We’ve got a lot of people out collecting through my networks. There’s a lot of people who are supporting me. “There’s a couple of thousand tops already. We’re hoping to get more though.” With more than 1000 bottle tops already stored away, Michelle hopes to collect enough to make a big impact. To join the collection drive call: 9366 9067

Sew much for the footy For those not interested in the AFL Grand Final, a 20-hour sew-a-thon will be held in Altona. Patchworkers will start on Friday, September 27 and finish on Saturday, September 28, sewing from 1-11pm both days at the Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre. General manager Kim Reilly said football used to be completely banned at the event but that rule went out the window in 2016 when the Western Bulldogs played and beat the Sydney Swans. “Not all of us are interested in football and we use that as a concentrated time that we can get some sewing done,” Ms Reilly said. “We used to ban football from the event but we’re not that strict any more.

“It’s very much a fun and supportive group … often the quilts are ‘care quilts’ for charity.” While Ms Reilly’s family follows Geelong, she said she liked to keep busy during AFL finals time to avoid stress. “For many years, when Geelong wasn’t doing very well, it was an opportunity to escape the sadness in the house,” she said. “Then, when Geelong did really really well, it’s an opportunity to be away from the house so they can actually barrack and do all the things that they do.” The cost is $30 for two days or $15 for one day. Locals fight waste plant By Goya Dmytryshchak A petition has been started by a Hobsons Bay resident concerned that a $120 million waste to energy plant at Laverton North could spread dangerous emissions to surrounding suburbs. Recovered Energy Australia’s proposed plant in Alex Fraser Drive would take up to 200,000 tonnes of residual household waste annually to convert into enough electricity to power 20,000 houses a day. Energy would be produced using a process known as gasification where waste is converted

into a gas that then heats water into steam that drives a turbine to create electricity. Wyndham council has approved the plan, which is now before the Environment Protection Authority for the final tick. An EPA decision is imminent. Laverton resident Carolina Aguirre has started a petition on change.org, calling for more community consultation with western suburbs’ residents, particularly in Hobsons Bay, Wyndham, Maribyrnong and Brimbank. “Even though the company said they can control the emissions, they’re also saying that the pollution that comes from that is highly

dependent on what material they’re getting,” she said. The petition states: “Waste to energy seems a simple solution for our waste crisis but the risk with gasification is that this creates gasifier slag, ash residues and flue gas, which is technically prescribed industrial waste.” Recovered Energy Australia director Ian Guss said the company’s own emissions study showed there were no safety concerns. “We have done a health report, which shows that there is no potential impact,” he said. “All emissions are well, well within the allowable limits put on us by the EPA.”

Tunnel works cash bonus A $10 million fund for community groups and organisations in Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay has been announced as part of the West Gate Tunnel project. The West Gate Neighbourhood Fund is a grants and partnerships program providing up to $100,000 for projects that “bring people together and improve neighbourhoods” or above $100,000 for co-funded initiatives. The government has separately promised a total of $11 million to Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay councils as part of the project Maribyrnong’s $6 million is for riverside improvements in Footscray, including an upgrade to the Footscray Wharf and promenade. Hobsons Bay will spend $5 million on McLean Reserve at Spotswood, Crofts Reserve at Altona North and three Brooklyn reserves. Williamstown MP Melissa Horne said the government was “calling on local groups to bring their best ideas forward so that we can make sure our community is seeing the benefits of this massive project well before the tunnel opens”. “The West Gate Tunnel will get trucks off local streets and create more than nine hectares of new, green open space in Melbourne’s west, and we’re getting it done,” she said. EPA program expands

Steep learning curve By Benjamin Millar A planting blitz by Footscray City College students has helped put the finishing touches on Footscray’s latest attraction, a downhill mountain bike track at Quarry Park. Work is almost completed on construction and landscaping of the new tracks on steep sloping land along the northern part of the site, funded by a $400,000 state government grant and about $100,000 from Maribyrnong council.

Footscray City College horticulture teacher Jak Dunstan said students from the school held a planting day at the site last Thursday, putting in place about 300 plants they had raised as part of their horticulture program. “They are plants that are local to this area, endemic to this area,” he said. “We have a bit of a partnership with the council and we’ve been growing quite a bit for them, for the students it’s practical, hands-on learning.” Mr Dunstan said the location of Quarry Park,

directly behind the school, meant students would be able to observe the progress of their plantings and help out with their upkeep. “The idea is to connect with local spaces,” he said. “It’s an area that not many people know about it, but we got a lot of different classes involved in the planting and we will keep an eye on our plants.” The downhill mountain bike track, the first in Melbourne’s west, is expected to be officially open in coming weeks.

A pilot program to tackle local pollution problems as soon as they arise will be rolled out in Maribyrnong. Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) authorised officers will be embedded within the council to provide a rapid response to issues such as noise, dust, odour and waste management arising from smaller businesses. Known as Officers for the Protection of the Local Environment (OPLE), they also share knowledge and skills with industry and communities to help prevent and resolve environmental issues. The pilot has been running across 13 council areas since 2017, including an officer shared between Hobsons Bay and Brimbank. Maribyrnong mayor Martin Zakharov said last year’s Tottenham warehouse fire highlighted the local need for the OPLE. “Having an OPLE within council will help speed up the resolution of local environmental problems and we’re expecting to see great outcomes for our community,” he said. EPA chief executive Cathy Wilkinson said as well as responding to issues which affect liveability, the OPLEs will also be central to the EPA’s increased focus on identifying illegal stockpiling and disposal of waste. The pilot is funded until June 2020 via $3.4 million from the state government. Recruiting is underway for eight OPLES to cover 10 councils. Benjamin Millar

Supermarket giant on the way By Tate Papworth German supermarket giant Kaufland has plans to open a store in Braybrook as part of its Victorian expansion. It comes after the state government approved applications for the company to open stores in Oakleigh South and Coolaroo. Three other stores, in Dandenong, Chirnside Park and Epping, have already received approval. Nine proposed sites, including Braybrook, will be reviewed by an independent panel.

Kaufland could not confirm the exact location for it’s proposed Braybrook store when contacted by Star Weekly Weekly. Kaufland Australia managing director Julia Kern said: “With five approved stores, as well as the additional nine sites under review, we are committed to our long term, sustainable

growth across Victoria. “We look forward to creating thousands of jobs and creating opportunities for local businesses.” She said Kaufland would offer local produce, well-known brands and private label products at discount prices. “Australia is one of the fastest growing regions in the world, and we are excited to grow with it.” The Kaufland stores aren’t expected to open for at least another two years, with the company first needing to finish construction

of a distribution centre. Earlier this year, the company announced a $459 million investment to build its distribution centre and headquarters at Merrifield Business Park in Mickleham. Construction began in June. Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas said the centre would be the largest distribution centre in the country – or almost six times the size of the MCG. “This is a huge notch on Victoria’s belt,” he said. “Kaufland’s investment will boost our economy, create jobs and provide opportunities for local businesses.”

Hitting a high note Acclaimed Yarraville soprano Antoinette Halloran has promised there will be “something for everyone” when she takes to the stage next week. Halloran will be joined by her partner in music and life, tenor James Egglestone, in Runaway Soprano as part of Arts Centre Melbourne’s Morning Melodies series. The popular soprano said the program brings together some of her favourite moments in music, drawing on her broad creative background. “We have put together a show that is a little bit autobiographical in that it has opera, music theatre and cabaret,” she said. One of Australia’s most accomplished sopranos, Halloran regularly performs with all the major Australasian opera companies and symphony orchestras. Egglestone, a dual Helpmann Award-winner, has been recognised as one of Australia’s finest

tenors. Halloran said it’s not the first time the lovebird songbirds have taken the stage together. “We have done a season of Madame Butterfly at the Sydney Opera House,” she said. “It’s very romantic so it was good for the marriage, falling in love all over again every night.” Halloran said audiences can expect operatic arias alongside Broadway classics and everything in-between at Monday’s shows. “The beauty of these kinds of things is that there is something in there for everyone, even a bit of jazz in there as well.” Runaway Soprano will be performed at Hamer Hall at 11am and 1.30pm Monday, September 16. Pitch in for share of funds By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council is urging people to pitch ideas for budget funding, just as year 10 school student Allison Webster did last year. The 16-year-old successfully lobbied for funding to build a safety barrier to separate dogs from cyclists and migratory shorebirds at Doug Grant Reserve in Altona. The council’s ‘Pitch your idea’ initiative invites community members to help shape the 2020-21 budget allocation. “My idea is to segregate the dogs from the bikes and the shorebirds,” Allison’s submission stated. “Since the dogs are allowed to run freely in Doug Grant Reserve, the cyclists and dogs are at risk of being injured. “The dog owners don’t always keep their dogs on leash when walking along the foreshore [dogs are not allowed off leash] therefore allowing their dogs to chase and disturb the shorebirds.” Mayor Jonathon Marsden said other successful ‘Pitch your idea’ submissions had included a feasibility study into a wetland centre, communal bike maintenance stations, a community garden and upgrades to sporting facilities. Submissions must meet the council’s criteria. West Footscray gets neighbourly A “pop-up” park, improved streetscape character along Barkly Street and increased density around transport connections are all on the cards for West Footscray. Maribyrnong council recently voted to seek the planning minister’s approval to incorporate the West Footscray Neighbourhood Plan into the local planning scheme. The plan seeks to address community calls for better development, improved walking and cycling connections and upgrades to open spaces. It also includes a potential “pop-up” style park that would close off Clarke Street to traffic at Barkly Street. Reflecting the growing population density in and around Barkly Street, the plan splits the area into four precincts and highlights preferred sites for more intense medium-density residential development to meet forecast growth. The council wants to rezone sites fronting Barkly Street and around West Footscray station to allow opportunities for higher density residential development, up to six storeys along Barkly Street and eight storeys near the station. The plan, to be incorporated into the Maribyrnong Planning Scheme as Amendment C162, includes strategies to improve cycling and bus connections with destinations such as Highpoint shopping centre and Footscray.

United on climate action Adults and children are being invited to join a local contingent to attend the Global Climate Strike on September 20. Transition Hobsons Bay member Rowena Joske said the group is organising a local gathering place where all the climate strikers can meet up and travel into the city together. “The strike is about demanding that climate change be treated as the crisis that it is. We are asking for a swift transition away from coal and other fossil fuels and to 100 per cent renewable energy; this of course includes stopping the Adani mine.” Thousands of Australian students are expected to walk out of school to attend the strike. Spotswood mother Molly Galea said she was supporting her grade 6 twins, Lucienne and

Joseph, who wanted to attend. “They know that climate change is the most serious issue that they’re facing … their world being liveable for them is an issue worth skipping school over. “I think it is an important part of their education that they are learning to understand the science on climate change and also learning about how our political systems work and what they can do to try to have our leaders act.” The September 20 action is three days before the UN Emergency Climate Summit. Council joins insurance class action

By Benjamin Millar Yarraville teen Saskia Junge embarked on the trip of a lifetime, sailing down the east coast of Australia on the Young Endeavour. Sailing from Brisbane to Sydney with 23 other young Australians, the Melbourne Girls’ College student took part in the 11-day voyage on the sail training ship after first hearing about it from her father and then again while on a leadership camp. “My experience on Young Endeavour has been absolutely amazing, I’ve enjoyed every second of it and it’s been so much fun,” she said. Throughout the program, Royal Australian Navy staff teach participants the skills required to sail a square-rigged tall ship, including how to keep watch, cook in the galley and climb the 30-metre mast to set and furl the sails. “It’s a challenging adventure where as a youth crew of 24, we sail the amazing tall ship from one destination to another,” Saskia said. “I really enjoyed being on watch. We got to take the helm, be on lookout and see shooting stars – we even saw dolphins.” The young crew, aged 16 to 23, are encouraged to participate in activities along the way that help them to develop important life skills. “I’ve definitely learnt about teamwork, leadership and what it takes to become a good leader,” Saskia, 16, said. Since 1988, the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme has provided almost 600 training voyages on the 44-metre brigantine sailing ship to nearly 14,000 young Australians. Hobsons Bay is among at least seven Victorian councils to have launched a class action against insurance broker Jardine Lloyd Thompson, alleging ratepayers paid millions more than they should have in property insurance. The councils allege they overpaid on premiums by up to 50 per cent because Jardine Lloyd Thompson recommended an insurance scheme from which it financially benefited rather than the cheapest on the market. Law firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, which filed proceedings in the Supreme Court of Victoria last month, said councils may have unwittingly been paying far more for insurance premiums than they should have. The cost of insurance premiums is typically recouped through rates. The lead council in the class action – Moira Shire – paid more than $2 million for property insurance over the past decade. Mr Mills said this could represent an overpayment of between $600,000 and $1 million. Hobsons Bay corporate services director Andrew McLeod said the council was delighted to be part of the action. “We think it is important to … recover what is due,” he said. A video projection on the front of The Substation at Newport will be a highlight of this month’s Fringe Festival in Hobsons Bay. Artists Pierra Van Sparkes, a Kulin country-based Pibbulman artist, has created the artwork that will be cast over two of the arched windows at the former power station. Titled Current, the projection will run from 7pm-1am until Sunday, September 18 (except Sunday and Monday nights). Van Sparkes said the projection referred to experiences at her mum and nan’s house, linking them to the history and architecture of The Substation. “My mother and I make tea in my nan’s old crockery, items passing between hands and in and out of frame as they move between us,” she said. “Up and down the hills and valleys we go, grateful guests on beautiful Taungurung country we’ve called home for all these years.” Also linking to the past, a free workshop titled, An Assemblage of Memories will be held at the Woods Street Art Space in Laverton. Gunditjmara artist Hayley Millar-Baker will lead participants through a childhood story, using imagery collected from newspapers and magazines. It’s on Saturday, September 21, from 11am-2pm. A budding musical and visual partnership will bloom in Footscray as part of this month’s Melbourne Fringe Festival. Local electro-medieval trio Dandelion Wine will be joined by Yarraville choir La La Ville and puppeteers Keira Lyons and Justine Warner for a series of shows at Bluestone Church Arts Space from this Friday. Kingsville vocalist Naomi Henderson said A Night Traversing Earth and Stars promises to take audiences on an out of this world journey combining Dandelion Wine’s trademark tapestry of medieval, folk and electronic instruments with the human voice of the choir. Call goes out for green thumbs By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona Green Primary is calling for volunteers to help with its Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. Kitchen specialist Felicity Debenham said the role would suit those who liked growing food, cooking and being around children. “The whole Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program is ‘growing, harvesting, preparing, sharing’ – that’s our motto,” she said. “The kids grow the food, so we learn to cook with seasonal produce.

“We cook simple, fresh, nutritious food, and through that they learn those life skills of growing and preparing their own food. “There’s also the social skills that come with that because you sit down and share a meal together – each class and the volunteers as well – so it’s building that inclusive, healthy community.” The program runs on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during school term. Volunteering requires a commitment of as little as 1.5 hours and involves guiding and supporting the children. “We really value community volunteers and

their life experience and the wisdom they bring to working with kids,” Ms Debenham said. “My star volunteer is a 65-year-old woman who’s got great energy and patience with the kids.” Volunteers need a Victorian working with children check, which can be obtained for free. Actor plays the game A rising star of the stage has landed a key role in the Melbourne production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Ben Elton’s musical The Beautiful Game. Seddon performer Sam Ward has been chosen for the principal role of Del in the Australian premiere of the award-winning musical, set in Northern Ireland in the troubled 1970s. Telling the story of ordinary people in an extraordinary situation, the story centres on a local soccer team attempting to overcome the emerging political and religious violence that has engulfed their community. The story traces the blooming of love between John and Mary, who find themselves caught in the middle of a ‘war’ that neither of them wants. Ward, a 2016 graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts, is no stranger to the stage.

He cut his professional teeth in Jesus Christ Superstar for The Production Company and also played the role of Marius in Les Miserables for Free-Rain Theatre Company. He has recently returned from Europe and the Caribbean, where he performed aboard the Norwegian Epic in a production of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Ward will be joined in The Beautiful Game by Stephen Mahy as John and Stephanie Wall as Mary, along with Maidstone performer Bronson Pfeiler in the 24-strong cast. My wife and I moved to Hobsons Bay six years ago but I actually grew up in the area. As a kid, I went to Newport West Primary School and lived in Newport until I was 10. What do you like about Altona Meadows? I think Altona and Altona Meadows is just this hidden gem that no one knows about, so that’s one of things that I like about it. Easy access to the freeway, still close to the city, access to the beaches, good cafes. What’s your favourite cafe and/or restaurant? Favor & Grace is my favourite cafe – great service, great food; have been going there since week one that they opened. And they’re big on supporting community events and activities.

What don’t you like about Altona Meadows or what could be improved? I actually really like Altona Meadows. I can’t think of anything. Can you tell me about the B.O.B Club (Boys Only Barbecue), held from noon every second Monday at Altona’s Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre? My wife and I pastor Big Heart Church, which meets at the community centre and (manager) Kim (Reilly) and I were talking about what they do in the community. One of her ideas was a blokes only barbecue to meet some of the needs

of men that she sees through the community centre that don’t necessarily connect with men’s sheds or other organisations. Off the back of that we birthed the idea of doing a barbecue once a fortnight and it’s open to all men to come in and have food and talk about cars, sport, life, whatever they want to talk about.

I have a long history of working with youth and young people. As I said, I pastor at the Big Heart Church locally, and I am passionate about seeing people grow and find and discover the gifts and talents they have in life.

Playground for learning About 150 schoolchildren from across Victoria converged at Scienceworks in Spotswood for national Kids Teaching Kids Week, sharing knowledge on how to make environmentallysustainable playgrounds. Schools presenting workshops included Deer Park North Primary, Sunshine North Primary, St Albans Meadows Primary and St Anne’s Catholic Primary from Sunbury. Kids Teaching Kids founder Arron Wood said the children investigated ways to make parks and playgrounds more sustainable and ecofriendly. “Topics include rain-catchment systems, renewable energy sources and sustainable landscaping,” he said. “KTK is the leading peer education program

in Australia and is free and available to all Australian schools. “Students are guided to teach each other and present their knowledge of a selected sustainability issue to their peers.” Australia-wide, about 8000 students from 430 schools took part in the week. Kids Teaching Kids’ Danielle Thuringer said the children worked together to design sustainable playground prototypes using the Scienceworks maker’s space and 3D pens. “Schools will be able to bring their playground prototypes back to school to share with their classmates what they learnt and advocate for sustainable playgrounds,” she said. What’s that? You’re renovating? I object! It was Groucho Marx who said: “I don’t know what they have to say, it makes no difference anyway. Whatever it is – I’m against it!” And that’s so often the attitude of Australians generally to their neighbours’ applications to do any work at all on their own homes, whether renovations and extensions or rebuilds, insists veteran architect Daniel Meszaros. “As soon as that building notice goes up on a front fence, then all bets are off,” he says, after 45 years of having to deal with building objections – most of which, he claims, run the gamut from stupid to absolutely crazy. “It doesn’t matter that the proposed extensions or work might fully comply with all the regulations; emotions override common sense and neighbourly friendship. “Of course, there are projects that deserve objections but for every one of those, there are 50 baseless ones, ranging from the petty and plain silly to the downright vicious.” Meszaros has now collected some of the weirdest and wackiest objections to applications he’s encountered. “I think people are objecting even more and some of their objections are getting stranger and stranger,” Meszaros says. “People are frustrated, they believe there’s more and more development, and they’re feeling disempowered by the processes.” Among the objections he’s had to deal with have been: • An objection to a neighbour’s TV aerial being slightly over someone’s boundary which meant birds were scared to fly over;

• A neighbour objected to a house, saying she’d be able to see it when standing in her bath; • A neighbour saying that light from an extension window would spoil the view of the moon from his daughter’s telescope at night;

• A neighbour saying paint on a timber extension would come off in strips and the flapping noise would keep her awake at night; • Neighbours objecting to a new house on an empty block because it would ruin their shortcut to the beach;

SPORT Young Bulldogs will learn lessons from finals loss Western Bulldogs will feel the sting of their 58-point elimination final loss to GWS Giants at Giants Stadium on Saturday for some time. Once the pain subsides from their out-of-character performance, experienced campaigner Matt Suckling believes the team will eventually look on the 2019 AFL season as a stepping stone. However, the hurt of such a heavy loss will linger for some time. “It’s obviously disappointing and it’s going to be a tough week,” Suckling said post-game. “There wasn’t too much of a deep post-mortem. “We’ll have our exit interviews during the week, go away and mentally refresh and look to

improve.” Suckling kicked the opening goal of the game with a long bomb just 21 seconds in and it looked like the Western Bulldogs were on. It was one of only a few highlights on a dirty day for the Bulldogs, who could only manage 37 inside 50s to GWS Giants’ 76. The Bulldogs were beaten in nearly all of the key statistical categories as they could not re-capture their scintillating late-season form. Suckling has played as a utility for the Bulldogs this season, but spent most of his time down back and was one of the players in the firing line of a Giants onslaught. “Going from in-season to finals, the intensity lifts up,” Suckling said.

“We expected that, but to their credit, they probably got the game on their terms. “I know down back, we were under siege there, especially in the first half. “We did a good job of holding up, but it’s hard when you concede that many inside 50s and you’re not getting the game on your terms.” It should be a valuable learning curve for the young Western Bulldogs team. Few would have expected the Bulldogs to even reach the finals when they were down in 12th place after round 18. “It’s a great experience for a lot of guys playing in their first final today and now they know what it’s all about,” Suckling said. “It can be a real strength for us if we take this

opportunity to learn and grow from it.” The back half of the season was a fun ride for the Western Bulldogs. The Bulldogs had massive wins over Essendon, GWS Giants and Adelaide to bypass a scrum of teams fighting it out for a top eight berth. “Plenty of positives from the second half of the year I suppose,” Suckling said. “I don’t think we used age as an excuse, but most weeks we were putting out one of the youngest teams. “If everyone comes back in good nick, we’ll give ourselves a good opportunity going into next year.” Lance Jenkinson

Vikings to fight for flag By Lance Jenkinson Amid the euphoria of Altona heading to its first Western Region Football League division 1 grand final since 2012, is the calmness of coach Saade Ghazi. Ghazi was quick to remind his players of the biggest task ahead after the Vikings moved through the season decider with a hard-fought 19-point win over six-time defending champions Deer Park at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. “We’re obviously extremely thrilled and probably relieved,” Ghazi said. “Firstly we’ve qualified for the finals high up, now we’ve made a grand final and everything we’ve achieved is great and gives you confidence, but our focus now is on preparing for that. “We’ll control what we can. “You want to get in them, but you want to win them more.” Altona’s last foray into a top-flight grand final yielded a premiership. Anthony Eames, the current coach of Spotswood, took the Vikings to the top of the mountain. Since that glorious moment, the Vikings have gone to the depths of despair as a club before slowly working their way back up. There was a point in time when the Vikings were in a financial mess and needed a strong band of volunteers and sponsors to step up and save the club. “The club did a wonderful job to win the premiership that year and probably struggled a bit for a few years,” Ghazi said. “The club financially weren’t in a great place, but this win is also reward for everyone in the community and everyone who’s on the committee and helped out in the last seven years. “It’s not just everyone who has helped out this year, it’s a reward for everybody and all the past players who have helped make the team better by making the standard better.” On the field, it never really got too bad for Altona. The Vikings played finals in 2013, missed out in 2014, but were back in the finals mix in 2015 and have not missed out on the September action since. Under Ghazi, the Vikings have emerged as the team most likely to end Deer Park’s dynasty. Ghazi believes in this team and that is why he does not want them to get ahead of themselves before the job is done and a premiership flag is on its way to Grant Reserve. “Yeah, it’s a great reward to be in a grand final, but obviously you really want to make it worthwhile by winning,” he said. The first half of Saturday’s clash between Altona and Deer Park was tight and tense. The Vikings kicked away with a six-goal-to-one blitz before holding off the Lions in the last quarter.

Jets fail to fire in season-ending loss It was a wild ride for the Western Jets in the NAB League this season, but it came to an end with a 35-point loss to Gippsland Power in the semi-final at Ikon Park on Saturday. The Jets had dreams of going all the way in the finals, but a semi-final exit was about right for what they delivered in the season on the whole. Jets football operations manager Matthew Dervan was pleased with how his side acquitted themselves during the finals, including wins in the wildcard round and the elimination final. “It’s what the game is all about, showing what you can do at this time of the year,” he said. “We faced some formidable opposition over the past three weeks and I think the boys will learn a lot from the experience and take it into wherever their next football journey is. “There were a few boys who upped their level of performance at the right time of the year when there’s more scrutiny and more eyes from the AFL clubs.” Western Jets made a positive start to the semi-final and led by five points at quarter-time. However, scoring dried up for the Jets in the second and third quarters as they could only

manage two behinds while the Power kicked out to a 39-point lead by three-quarter time. “We definitely started the better of the two sides,” Dervan said. “We led at quarter-time and there was a really confident and positive vibe heading into the first break. “Unfortunately we couldn’t sustain it.” Gippsland strangled the life out of the Western Jets after quarter-time. The Power’s defence has conceded on average 59 points a game this season and it turned up the heat once again. “Despite trying a few different methods of attack, we just weren’t good enough,” Dervan said. “Credit to Gippsland’s back six and defensive structure, they were just too good for us on the day.” As is the case every season, there is a high volume of turnover for all NAB League clubs. Knowing victory was a long shot, the Jets knew the fourth quarter would be the last for a number of their star top-age players. O’Keefe implored his team to give one last push – particularly those featuring in a Jets

jumper for the last time – to finish on a high. The Jets out-scored Gippsland in the fourth quarter, kicking four goals to three. “Some of the guys have put two or three years of really hard work into the program,” Dervan said. “Ryan challenged them at three-quarter time to not let themselves down and show something in that last quarter and finish on a high note. “I think we did that pretty well.” Daly Andrews finished his Jets career off with a best-on-ground performance. The midfield ball magnet also kicked two goals – one of only two Jets players on the day to kick multiple goals, with the other being Archi Manton. “He worked tirelessly as an inside mid,” Dervan said. Muscat’s men deliver By Lance Jenkinson First-year coach Alan Muscat has delivered a long-awaited title to Altona North in the Football Victoria men’s state league 4 west competition. Muscat meant business from the moment he set foot at Duane Reserve in December. The announcement of a string of important recruits followed his arrival and he worked at instilling a professionalism rarely seen at that level. Muscat knew North was serious from the moment he met with the committee to discuss the role. “The club just had that burning desire to succeed,” Muscat said. “I wasn’t coming to the club to count sheep and just pass my time. “The boys from day one, we said look, our ultimate goal is to win the league and nothing less. “Anything else would be a failure.” Talent will only get you so far. It all came down to the Altona North players accepting the need to work harder than ever before to be on the same page as Muscat. If they were not on board, Muscat would not have been able to succeed in his quest to send North to state league 3 for the first time in its history. “We set the standard from day one,” Muscat said. “Not many state 4 clubs would be training three times a week, but the boys were always up for it when called on. “They were hungry and they wanted this. “We were a pretty well-oiled machine, run professionally and no stone was left unturned. “That’s a credit to the club for giving me the resources to get the job done.” Altona North was the dominant side in the league all season, until about the middle of August. North hit a hurdle, losing games to Gisborne and Surf Coast. A rough patch usually is par for the course and rarely does a side go through a gruelling winter without experiencing a form dip. It was perhaps where Muscat did his best work. “Every team hits a purple patch and every team has a slump during the year,” he said. “Unfortunately ours came towards the end of the season. “We had a bad result against Gisborne, albeit credit to them, got past Spring Hills just, and Surf Coast was the game that could’ve sealed the title and that didn’t eventuate. “We had a good chat a couple of weeks back and I said to the boys I’m still comfortable with where we’re at and our destiny is in our own hands.

Williamstown has made it four premierships in five years in the Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league. The Fearons exacted revenge on Footscray, who beat them in the decider last season, with a comprehensive 18-10 victory at Treyvaud Memorial Reserve on Saturday. Matthew Price led the way in the scoring department for the Fearons with seven goals and an assist, while Callan Gibson had a team-high five assists to go with a goal. It was not all bad news for Footscray. The Bulldogs were victorious in the women’s state league, beating rivals Newport 14-7 in the grand final at Greenwich Reserve. North will now represent the west division in the state league 4 playoffs beginning this weekend.

It was sour end to the season for Altona Roosters in the NRL Victoria first grade. The Roosters were mauled 52-16 by the Truganina Rabbitohs in the grand final at Haines Drive Reserve on Saturday. It was an impressive feat for the Roosters to merely reach the grand final after starting its season 0-5. New Mazda3 better than ever By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring

out that, unlike most cars where the car needs to be in park, the Mazda must also have the engine turned off and pairing done through the accessory setting. Not a major issue given that itâ€™s a once-off process for new owners.

Mazda3 has been a consistently high seller throughout its 15 years on the Australian market, often contesting the top spots in both its small-medium category as well as overall sales. The latest, fourth generation, model arrived here in February in five-door hatchback form with the four-door sedan joining it a few months later. The previous Neo and Maxx names have been dropped and replaced with new titles based on the two engine sizes: 2.0-litre G20 Pure, G20 Evolve, G20 Touring and 2.5-litre G25 Evolve, G25 GT and G25 Astina.

Safety

New for 2019 is a driverâ€™s knee air bag bringing the total to seven. Advanced safety features have been added including Smart Brake Support (SBS), Lane-Keep Assist (LAS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) and Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW). There are also two ISOFIX child seat anchors in the outer rear seats. New to the GenFour Mazda3 is Vision Technology which adds Driver Monitoring, Front Cross Traffic Alert, Cruising and Traffic Support and a 360-degree view camera. It comes standard in the top-spec G25 Astina and as a $1500 option in all other variants.

Styling

As tall, boxy SUVs have grown in popularity it seems that designers of conventional sedans and hatches are reacting by adopting a lower and sleeker, fastback styling. So it is with the Gen Four Mazda3. We found the rear of the hatch a little heavy with its bulky C-pillar and much prefer the smoother lines of the sedan.

Driving

Interior

Rear seat passengers in the sedan get more legroom than the shorter hatch as well as a two air vents and drop-down armrest with twin cup holders. Cargo space in the sedanâ€™s boot is now 444 litres, up from the previous 408 litres in the superseded model. The 60/40 rear seatbacks can be lowered by using pull-tabs located on either side at the top of the boot. They donâ€™t quite fold flat. All models have push-button engine start, electric parking brake with auto hold, i-stop automatic spot/start and childproof rear door locks.

Engines / transmissions

The engines are revised versions of the Mazda SkyActiv-G 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder units. The G20 generates 114 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque. The G25 has outputs of 139 kW at 6000 rpm and 252 Nm at 4000 and also comes with cylinder deactivation which allows it to run on two cylinders in light driving conditions. All models are offered with six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions.

Infotainment

The Mazda Connect system gets an excellent centrally mounted 8.8-inch widescreen colour screen which is controlled by a rotary dial located between the front seats rather than the more common touchscreen. Embedded satellite navigation is standard in all models as, for the first time in the â€˜3, are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There are two fast-charging USB ports. Bluetooth pairing proved a bit frustrating until we found
