All eyes on the Olympics Yarraville St Nicholas Greek School students will attempt to run rings around their peers when they take part in the school’s Greek Olympics competition later this month. Running for more than a decade, the event has grown into a highly anticipated annual tradition for students at the Greek language school. School spokesman Father Alexandros Korlos said the event offers a chance for students to learn about the long history of the Olympic games in a fun and exciting way. “Students will learn about the history and traditions associated with the ancient Olympic games and give meaning to how the modern games are held today,” he said. “With Japan hosting the games in 2020, it couldn’t be a more appropriate time to learn about the games.” Students will try their hand at ancient sports alongside more modern variations, with events including a running marathon, javelin, a jumping race and a potato sack race. Firey’s toxic health fears Firefighters who battled the toxic Tottenham warehouse fire continue to suffer from a range of health effects one year on from the catastrophic blaze, it has been claimed. Hundreds of firefighters were exposed to highly toxic smoke and debris produced by the burning of a cocktail of dangerous chemicals as they spent days trying to extinguish the suspicious fire. The fire broke out in an asbestos-riddled warehouse filled with a large quantity of 44-gallon drums containing unknown chemical and industrial waste. Metropolitan Fire Brigade firefighters have

complained of ongoing nose bleeds, sore eyes, severe headaches and rashes, as well as exhaustion and memory loss. Other impacts include lung irritation, coughing, sore throats, sinus infections and flu-like symptoms. As of August 1 this year, 609 reports linked to the Tottenham fire had been entered into the MFB Safe system, which records incidents that result in injury or harm, generated by 467 individuals including 448 operational fire fighters. The impacts have been outlined in an interim report tabled last week by the Parliamentary committee holding an inquiry into a series of fires triggered by the unsafe stockpiling of

industrial waste and recyclable materials. The report detailed 12 key findings, topped by the “serious risk” to emergency services personnel as a result of operators flouting regulations. The committee also expressed concern that some community members have reported adverse health impacts as a result of the fires. MFB acting deputy chief fire officer Adam Dalrymple told the inquiry that the fires reflect “blatant non-compliance” by industry. MFB officer Peter Stafford warned of a “phoenix system” of cowboy operators acquiring a block of land cheaply, stockpiling waste and walking away with the money while authorities were left to deal with the clean-up.

The United Firefighters Union (UFU) warned its members are being forced to attend fires that amount to “a premeditated ambush”. “Such ambushes increase the risk of injury, illness and potential death of first responders due to the complete lack of warning or placarding to alert them to what they have to confront in the firefight that they have been deployed to,” its submission stated. The Australian Workers’ Union told the Committee that recyclers are often given notice of intended EPA visits, which allows dodgy operators to hide or move products off-site. Many of you would be aware that at last Tuesday’s City Development Special Committee meeting Councillors endorsed the rejection of the draft Footscray Park Masterplan as presented, and a community advisory panel will be established. With a range of views about the proposal amongst the community, the panel – including community nominated and elected representatives – will advise Council on amendments to the Footscray Park Masterplan, the community use and positioning details of the proposed youth academy, and conditions regarding lease and licensing arrangements should the academy proceed. We have a thriving sport and recreation community here in the City of Maribyrnong, and we work hard to ensure everyone has the opportunity to improve their health and wellbeing. Footscray Park is, of course, also used for informal recreation by families and individuals, as well as being the location for community festivals and events. We want to ensure that the decisions we make provide the best possible outcome for all of our residents, and after hearing the feedback from the community we’ll make sure that we get those outcomes for Footscray Park. Once the community advisory group have developed their recommendations, an amended draft Footscray Park Masterplan will be prepared. The community will be invited to provide feedback on the plan prior to it going back to Council for a decision.

Clean up begins, but recycling remains a mess The state government has provided a $10 million loan to SKM’s receivers to clean up thousands of tonnes of recyclables stockpiled around Melbourne. Last month, six warehouses filled with recyclable material were located at Laverton North, Derrimut, Sunshine and Campbellfield. The money will help SKM reduce the stockpiles, which started last week, and resume collecting recyclables within five weeks. The company’s Laverton North site, where Hobsons Bay’s recyclables go, is expected to be the first to return to operation.

The loan comes on top of the government’s $6.6 million financial relief package handed out to 33 councils affected by SKM’s closure. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the council did not yet have any clarity on what the government’s loan meant for the municipality’s recycling services.

“Any increase in recycling capacity will be welcomed,” he said. “We look forward to gaining further clarity on what is going to be on offer as soon as possible. “In the meantime, we continue to encourage residents to take advantage of our Saturday recycling drop-off sessions and to take what measures they can to reduce the waste they generate, while we work on longer-term options.” With kerbside recycling currently still going to landfill, Hobsons Bay residents can take their

recyclables to the council’s operations centre in Sugar Gum Drive on Saturdays between 8am and 2pm. Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the kerbside recycling system was set to be overhauled. “This loan is the fastest way of getting recyclable materials sent to processing sites instead of landfill,” she said. “An overhaul of kerbside collection is the next step in getting our recycling sector back on track.” Tate Papworth and Goya Dmytryshchak

No end in sight for Victory plan By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong council is facing an uphill battle to reunite a bitterly divided community as it assembles a community advisory group tasked with exploring Melbourne Victory’s proposal to build a new soccer academy in Footscray Park. Councillors last week voted 6-1 to scrap an update to the park’s master plan that would pave the way for the academy to proceed, opting to send the proposal to a new group that will advise the council on the plan. About 200 Save Footscray Park protesters rallied outside the town hall ahead of the meeting, calling on the council to reject the proposal outright. They claimed the advisory group will be stacked with known supporters of the project and fail to consider the extent of opposition. Project supporters, meanwhile, argue a “noisy” minority of opponents have hijacked the debate by spreading misinformation and shutting down opposing views. Councillor Sarah Carter told last Tuesday night’s meeting that the divisive issue had weighed heavily on councillors. “If this process has taught me anything, we need to get better at consulting with the community.” Cr Megan Bridger-Darling said the academy was “a gift to Footscray” and described the situation as a “bin-fire”. Cr Mia McGregor received a standing ovation from the public gallery after saying the council had an “ethical obligation” to reject the proposal. “It’s divided this community like nothing I have seen before.” Cr Carter in turn accused Cr McGregor of “grandstanding”. Opponents stormed out of the meeting before the vote was taken, crying “shame” and “save Footscray Park”. A Melbourne Victory spokesman said the club is awaiting the detailed terms of reference of the community advisory group and “a defined end point” to the process.

The proposal continues to enjoy the support of Victoria University, which has maintained a low profile during the process to date despite its strategic partnership with Melbourne Victory.

A spokeswoman said the academy is in keeping with the university’s vision of a world-class education, health and sport precinct in Footscray.

Police engagement with young people in the west would receive a kick along from the Melbourne Victory soccer academy should it proceed, according to one of the state’s top cops. Detective Superintendent Deb Robertson, a 35-year police veteran who is the Operations Commander for Organised Crime in Victoria and president of Blue Light Victoria, has welcomed the club’s offer of space to run Blue Light within the academy should it be given a green light. Detective Superintendent Robertson said Blue Light manages 30,000 interactions with young people each year despite having no place to call home of its own. “It’s a not-for-profit, run mostly by police volunteering their time,” she said. “What this relationship with Melbourne Victory would give us is some stability. It’s also in an area we have high engagement with youth, it would be most beneficial to our programs.” Detective Superintendent Robertson said the partnership would help to deliver more programs for young people at risk, including a pathway through sport, as well as strengthening ties with nearby Victoria University. “We are hoping we can actually commence a program with them before this facility is up and running.” Angela Liberto, a West Footscray parent whose eight-year-old daughter plays soccer with women’s club the Maribyrnong Swifts, has also thrown her support behind the academy. “I am passionate about the project and giving our girls opportunities as they don’t have them at the moment,” she said. “If they wanted to continue [playing soccer] they can’t do it, there is no opportunity for girls in the western suburbs.” Benjamin Millar

Sailor injured

A sailor was brought into Williamstown on Saturday afternoon after he was injured when his yacht’s mast snapped. The man, in his 20s, had been competing in a yacht race from Brighton to Geelong. He was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

A ghoul’s search for a man in suburbia has helped Sunshine filmmakers and spouses Andrew Robb and Jessica Gerger scoop the fifth annual Altona Beach Film Festival. My Ghoul won both the Best in Festival and People’s Choice awards. This year’s festival theme was ‘journey’ and Robb explains that his wife, playing the central role of the ghoul, hops on a bus in Sunshine to go find a man. “It’s about a lonely ghoul who lives in a big deserted mansion and she has decided to go looking for a man so she steps out into suburbia on that quest,” he said. “Each year, my wife and I make a film for the Sunshine Short Film Festival … we made My Ghoul set in Sunshine – there were Sunshine

landmarks peppered throughout the film … We always make a short film for that festival and that then goes on to have another life. “In My Ghoul’s case … it’s been to many different festivals all around Victoria and Australia and the world, including London.” This year’s judging panel included documentary maker Wain Fimeri from Altona and past winner Aaron Ellis from Altona Meadows. Residents topple plan

Five jailed for drug haul

By Goya Dmytryshchak In what has been described as a win for people power, residents who objected to plans for four double-storey dwellings on one lot in a quiet Altona street have won their battle. While the proposed subdivision for 12 McIntyre Drive was not uncommon in Altona, residents believe it is the first time there have been 95 objections to such a development. The planning application from Dajvis Andonov was last week refused by a special planning committee (SPC) of three councillors. Any application with more than 10 objections goes to the committee for consideration. The application was refused on grounds including it failed to meet local and state planning policies and did not fit in with the new general residential zone that encourages “development that respects neighbourhood character”. Objector and civil engineer Stuart Hercules said residents believed the proposal was an overdevelopment for the 801-square metre site, which currently has a single-storey dwelling. “I’ve been told that in the past, out of 22 SPC hearings, only one [application] was refused,” he said. “We’re the second. “We’re absolutely elated and I think it’s got big ramifications for the community and it has also enabled us to get to know a lot more of our cool neighbours. “This development has really galvanised our community, such that we’ve also developed our own action group called Altona Residents Resisting Over Development [ARROD]. “We now have specialist representatives to assist in any future developments we see as greedy and choosing yield over safety and lifestyle.” Another objector, architect Adam Mamaj,

said the council’s unanimous rejection of the proposal was a result of an engaged and motivated local community. “This decision sends a strong message to developers that the community, as does local and state policy, demands excellence in their built environment,” he said. “As a community, we should expect all

developments will be safe and enjoyable to live in as well as adding value to the area.” The applicant has 60 days to appeal the council’s refusal at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal Mr Andonov, the director of Meraq Building Designers in Altona North, was contacted for comment.

Five men have been sentenced to lengthy prison stints over their roles in attempting to import almost 200 kilograms of pseudoephedrine into Tottenham. The County Court of Victoria heard Ngoan Van Trun, Van Hau Ta, Quynh Ta, Cong Cao Dau and Van Dau Tran were involved in shipping 190 kilograms of pure pseudoephedrine to Tottenham in 2016, hidden in a shipment of washing powder from Vietnam. The container arrived in Melbourne in December 2016 and was intercepted prior to its delivery. The bags of pseudoephedrine were removed and substituted with packets of brown sugar before the container was delivered to a warehouse in Tottenham on New Year’s Eve. The value of the pseudoephedrine, if sold in one kilogram blocks, was estimated between $6.6 million and $20 million. Ngoan Van Tran, was convicted and sentenced to nine years and six months imprisonment. Van Hau Ta was convicted and sentenced to 10 years and three months imprisonment. Quynh Ta and Cong Cao Dua were convicted over the smuggling, along with a range of other drug offences. Quynh Ta was sentenced to 18 years. Cong Dua was sentenced to 14 years. Van Dau Tran was last year sentenced to eight years and nine months over his role in the smuggling. Benjamin Millar

Creek costs soar to $6m By Benjamin Millar Clean-up costs to remove a toxic cocktail of chemicals from Stony Creek have soared past $6 million. Twelve months after millions of litres of run-off from the August 30, 2018 Tottenham warehouse fire flooded the creek, killing thousands of fish and making the water unsafe for human or animal contact, authorities are finally able to remove contact warnings for the creek water. Rehabilitation efforts to bring creek water back to within recreational guidelines for human contact have involved removing an Olympic-size swimming pool worth of contaminated sediment. Melbourne Water pumped 70 million litres of polluted water straight to the sewer immediately after the fire, removing 170 cubic metres of contaminated sediment from the creek. A further 2500 cubic metres of contaminated sediment has been removed from the creek between the fire site and Paramount Road, the most heavily contaminated stretch of the waterway. Melbourne Water waterways and land general manager Tim Wood said the authority is working with EPA Victoria to scope further recovery works. “Contaminated land and waterway specialists have been engaged to determine remaining ‘hotspot’ locations for contaminated sediment in Stony Creek,” he said. The state government last year provided $1 million towards the works, but a further $5 million has so far been spent on remediation works between the fire site and Paramount Road alone. services Nigel Higgins said the council has incurred a number of direct costs along with “considerable” uncosted staff time. “The majority of our costs will occur once the desilting has taken place further down the creek and we can start replanting, and through the implementation of Stony Creek Future Directions Plan that will be released later this

year,” he said. Future works are being guided by the joint Stony Creek Rehabilitation Plan, which will be launched at a community event in Cruickshank Park from 11am-2pm this Sunday. The launch will include a barbecue, planting activities and will be attended by staff from Maribyrnong council, Melbourne Water and EPA Victoria.

Altona Gate Aldi to get makeover Aldi supermarket at Altona Gate shopping centre in Altona North will close for a fortnight from September 11. A store spokesperson said the closure was needed for a refurbishment that was part of a statewide rollout of a “modern design”. New features will include redesigned shelving, expanded wooden produce bays and more energy-efficient chillers and lighting. “While we’re delighted to be introducing these innovations, we want our customers to know they won’t lead to higher prices,” the spokesperson said. “Low prices are a big deal for Aldi. Crossing safety fears By Benjamin Millar Speeding trucks and red-light runners are putting the lives of young people in Yarraville at risk, according to worried parents. Children crossing Somerville Road to reach St Augustine’s Catholic Primary School are taking their lives into their own hands, says parent Dean Lewinsohn, who is campaigning for a suite of safety improvements on the busy stretch of road. Mr Lewinsohn said traffic is often travelling at more than 40km/h during school crossing times and that many vehicles are running the red light at Gamon Street, particularly when driving down the railway overpass. “This has been going on for a couple of years now,” he said. “It’s only a matter of time until somebody kills someone.” Mr Lewinsohn said the crossing attendant has observed a number of near misses and a truck recently crashed into one of the traffic lights, knocking it out of the ground. He would like to see a red-light camera and flashing speed limit signs installed at the intersection to alert people that they were entering a school zone. Mr Lewinsohn said parents had raised their concerns with Williamstown MP Melissa Horne, but were yet to receive a response. Heart set on helping out By Goya Dmytryshchak About two years ago, at 52 years of age, Veronica Tennant was seemingly in great health. Two days earlier, the Newport woman had completed the 600 kilometre Great Victorian Bike Ride. But, while having lunch with a friend she felt a pain she rated as a seven out of 10. “I wasn’t too concerned – [I’d] just completed this great event, I was strong as an ox,” Ms Tennant recalls. “Then I said, look, it’s a bit odd, it’s not gone away after a couple of hours.” Ms Tennant went to her GP who sent her to a hospital ED “just in case”. “I was feeling like such a fake, I was saying, look, it’s just a funny old chest pain but it can’t be serious. “Lo and behold, after a couple of tests and a blood test they said, ‘Well, you’re having a heart attack’.” Ms Tennant had what is known as a SCAD – Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection – which happens to many women around times of hormone change such as menopause, pregnancy and child birth. During a SCAD heart attack, a sudden tear happens within the layers of one or more arteries to the heart, blocking blood flow, which can lead to cardiac arrest or sometimes death. It is the No.1 cause of heart attack in women under 50 and in women who are pregnant and new mothers. Ms Tennant is taking part in the third annual Melbourne SCADaddle, a five kilometre walk around Albert Park Lake on Sunday, September 15, to raise funds for SCAD Research. Coffee, culture and festivities Ethiopia’s rich cultural traditions will be on show when the Ethiopian New Year Festival bursts into life in Footscray this Saturday. Celebrating its 14th year, the festival is expected to attract hundreds of people to the Nicholson Street Mall to enjoy music, dance, fashion and traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremonies. Ethiopian Community Association in Victoria president Adamu Tefera said the festival offers an opportunity for people from all backgrounds to learn more about Ethiopian culture, particularly its unique music and dance. “This event is very important for our community as it evokes strong feelings of acceptance and belonging,” he said. UPDATE ON THE WEST GATE TUNNEL PROJECT The West Gate Tunnel Project is entering an exciting phase, with preparations continuing for tunnelling. The first Tunnel Boring Machine, Bella, will bore the longer 4-kilometre outbound tunnel. This tunnel starts at Yarraville and heads south-west towards the West Gate Freeway near South Kingsville. The new tunnel will link the West Gate Freeway near Williamstown Road to the port and the city. Bella will tunnel about nine metres a day, and tunnelling will take about 18 months. To allow tunnelling to begin, there has been another important milestone achieved – the moving of the North Yarra Main Sewer that ran below the centre of Whitehall Street in Footscray and Yarraville. Diverting the sewer protects it from tunnelling and prevents disruptions to essential services. After a year closed, Whitehall street will be reopened to traffic. The widening of the West Gate Freeway to provide four extra through lanes is well underway, and will soon involve the replacement of two pedestrian bridges at Rosala Avenue, Altona North, and Muir Street, Spotswood. Installation will start in the coming months, in preparation for opening before the end of the year. The first of 14 kilometres of new noise walls are being installed at Crofts Reserve, Altona North, so that nearby residents and the thousands of people who use the important reserve will be protected from the noise from the 200,000 vehicles that use the West Gate Freeway every day. In total, about 4000 new noise wall panels will be installed along the West Gate Freeway, making a significant difference for the community. The noise walls will be installed progressively along the freeway over the next few years. Nearer to the city, on Footscray Road, we have shifted westbound traffic onto new temporary traffic lanes so that we can start building a construction site down the middle of Footscray Road and get to work on the elevated road that will run above it, connecting the tunnel to the port, city and CityLink. Improving connections The West Gate Tunnel Project is building more than a tunnel. The project will link the west of the city to the port, the city and CityLink. Sliding into new snake season By Alesha Capone Prepare for snake season. Stewy the Snake Catcher has warned residents of the west that snake season has started, with several slithering reptiles already spotted in suburbs including Wyndham Vale, Point Cook, Williamstown and Altona. The Wyndham-based snake expert, whose ‘real’ name is Stewart Gatt, said although snake season officially began on September 1, he and his team had already received several

call-outs from the western suburbs. Mr Gatt said that during August, he received four calls about snakes in Wyndham Vale; three each from Point Cook and Williamstown and two calls from Altona. He’d also had calls from areas including Laverton North, Keilor East, Kings Park and Bacchus Marsh. Mr Gatt said tiger snakes were the most common breed of snake found in the west. “Second would be the eastern brown snakes, followed by the little whip snakes, white-lipped snakes and very rarely red bellied

black snakes and copperheads,” he said. “If you see a snake, make yourself safe, remove any pets and children from the immediate area and call a snake catcher – follow any instructions they give you until they arrive and you will be safe.” He said to help prevent snakes from accessing properties, yards should be kept clean, grass short and garden beds clean of low-lying coverage. “Debris should be removed from next to your house, if a snake has nowhere to hide, then it won’t feel safe on your property and

less likely to hang around,” Mr Gatt said. “If you have any gaps or holes in your boundary fences, block them up so that snakes can’t enter your property, and on really warm days, don’t leave your doors open, as snakes will enter looking for a nice place to cool down.” Under an arrangement with Wyndham council, another snake handler covers call-outs for snake removals in Truganina and Tarneit. A Yarraville artist has traced the “relatively invisible” history of women artists working in the Bauhaus style to create her contribution to an exhibition marking 100 years of the iconic design school. Zöe Croggon has been invited to exhibit in Bauhaus Foto as part of the prestigious Ballarat International Foto Biennale, Australia’s foremost photographic festival. The award-winning artist is best known for her photo-collages that explore the body and its relationship to architectural space, a fitting match for exploring the Bauhaus ethos and aesthetic. The overarching Bauhaus ideology was that all art forms should be brought together in one ‘total’ art that embraced emerging technology. Croggon said the influence of the German school over the last century has been undeniable. “As a visual language it’s so ubiquitous,” she said. “While it only became interested

Library users drawn together By Benjamin Millar Illustrator Ben Davis has captured Footscray Library’s place as the beating heart of the colourful suburb. Davis last year undertook an eight-week artistic residency based in the Artsbox shipping container outside the library, using his time to quietly observe the ways people used the space and sketching his observations along the way. The illustrator said his art attempts to find the humanity in the tiny moments that might otherwise pass us all by. “I’d spend the mornings and sometimes

afternoons sketching in the library, using mostly pen and ink,” he said. “Knowing that I could take my time to draw and observe meant I felt free to organically follow whatever track the people of the library took me down that particular day.” This included children playing chess in the courtyard, a group knitting scarves and beanies and a man lounging on a bean bag reading the newspaper. The illustrations grew to become The Library Book, a collection of drawings and musings reflecting on the many different ways the library is used by the community.

“During my residency, I came to recognise the regular library goers who often visited daily to read the newspaper, use the internet or study for exams and I started to understand just how integral the library is in its support of the community,” Davis said. Rio’s grand comeback Australia’s Rio Agustino pulled off “the comeback of the century” in the Australian Junior International badminton championships held in Altona North over four days. Sixty-eight players, including more than 50 from Australia, competed in BWF Junior Future Series event at the Altona Badminton Centre from last Thursday to Sunday. The finals were held on Sunday with competitions in the women’s and men’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles. Australia’s top seed Rio Agustino beat Chinese Taipei’s Liao Po Kai (16-21, 21-19, 21-17) in a three-set thriller spanning more than one hour and twenty-one minutes. “I started pretty well and then he mixed things up and I started to struggle,” Agustino said. “I was already 3-11 down in the third so I felt like I had nothing to lose. “I didn’t want to lose a game to less than 10 so

What’s your connection with Footscray? It just happened by fate as my supervisor at Sola Optical, where I had been working, let me know about the business opportunity. It was a risk we took, as we were not sure if it would be successful, but we have been in business since 1986. We later moved closer to Footscray to be closer to work. What do you like most about the area? It’s not far from the CBD, there is a strong Asian community and there is a sense of closeness. I like the convenient surrounding of shops, restaurants and bustling Footscray market. What are the biggest changes you have seen?

Lots of businesses have come and gone, with new ones moving in. There are a lot more spectacle shops, so more competition. The Footscray station transformation. What are your favourite local places? It’s hard to name a particular restaurant. There are lots of good choices for Vietnamese, Chinese and Malaysian cuisines and very good Vietnamese drip coffee. I like to take my grandchildren to the children’s playground on Hyde Street. How did you become involved in your line of work? I worked as an apprentice at a spectacle shop in Vietnam. When I arrived in Australia I

Yarraville Seddon is heading back to the Western Region Football League division 2 grand final for a fourth consecutive season. After losing on the biggest day on the calendar for the past three years, will it be fourth time lucky for the Eagles? Eagles coach Vinnie Turcinovich insists his team bares no scars from their failures of the past three seasons, despite losing grand finals to Point Cook by eight points last year, North Footscray by 58 points in 2017 and Caroline Springs by 14 points in 2016. Turcinovich’s off season recruiting and promotion from within was aimed towards going one step better in the finals. “There’s probably only half of the team back from last year,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of the under 19s come up, we added more height and we’ve brought in some good leg speed. “It’s a good mix with some youth and some bigger bodies.” Yarraville Seddon inflicted a rare defeat on minor premiers Wyndhamvale in the second

semi-final at JR Parsons Reserve on Saturday. The Eagles ran out 25-point winners over a Falcons side that entered the finals on the back of a 17-1 record. Significantly, the Eagles have beaten the Falcons two out of the three times they have met this season, so they will go into the grand final full of confidence should they meet again. “They were the benchmark of the competition,” Turcinovich said. “They’ve only lost one game and we respect them a lot. “We knew we had to play four quarters to win the game and we did that.” Yarraville Seddon was the commanding team in the game. By the Eagles statisticians, they won all the key areas in the game, but it was not until the last quarter where they could get separation on the scoreboard. Leading by just four at three-quarter time, the Eagles kicked away with a five-goal-to-two final term. Ole Angerstein claimed best-afield honours for his role in the ruck for Yarraville Seddon. Seagulls soar again By Lance Jenkinson It seems like there are three certainties in life: death, taxes and a Williamstown appearance in the Victorian Football League preliminary finals. The Seagulls have qualified for their 10th consecutive preliminary final, a run that goes all the way back to 2010. The Andrew Collins-coached Seagulls produced a stirring 13-point win on the road over Footscray in a brutal qualifying final at the VU Whitten Oval on Saturday. It made it a memorable 150th game milestone for Seagulls captain Adam Marcon. “It’s a pretty emotional day,” Marcon said. “Finals are hard enough as it is and then you add the 150th in there. “I’m super proud to get to 150 and proud of the boys to get over the line in such a tough one.” Kicking to the Geelong Road end with the aid of a strong breeze, Footscray opened up a 28-point lead at quarter-time. The Bulldogs wastefulness in front of goal meant they could not totally shut the door on the visitors. Williamstown took full advantage, banging on six goals in the second term, but the Bulldogs ability to kick two into the breeze meant scores were dead-locked at half-time. The third quarter was the key to victory for Williamstown. The Seagulls somehow managed to dry up Footscray’s scoring with the wind. The Bulldogs managed just 1.4 for the quarter, while Mitch Hibberd kicked one against the flow of play. What became evident in that period was how disciplined and deliberate Williamstown was with its play and how much of an influence Andrew Collins and his coaches had on the outcome. “One of the great strengths of this team is our discipline,” Marcon said. “We follow tasks and we stick to them. “If that’s not good enough then we’re happy enough with what we’ve put out.” Conversely, Footscray was a little more cavalier in its approach. The Bulldogs were attack dogs with their appetite to move the ball on fast. It posed its problems for Williamstown’s defence, but they were largely equal to the task and were able to push ahead. “It’s hard to play against because they just take the game on,” Marcon said. “The game never stops, it’s so taxing, so when

the final siren went, I was so happy. “I thought we did a great job negating some of their run.” While Williamstown has a great record in making preliminary finals, it will go in with a hint of trepidation as it holds a 2-7 record on the penultimate weekend of the finals. Testing time for Spotswood Spotswood needs a significant lift to avoid a straight sets exit from the Western Region Football League division 1 finals. The Woodsmen are on their last chance after fading late in a 30-point loss to Deer Park in the qualifying final at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. Woodsmen coach Anthony Eames expects to see a reaction from his team when it meets Werribee Districts in a cut-throat semi-final at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. “We’ll dissect it on Tuesday night and learn from this,” he said. “We’ll watch the tape and identify a few areas. “If we don’t learn from it, we’re no good. “We’ve got to bounce back, we’ve got another final next week and the heat will be on there too.” It will be one of the hardest games to tip for the season. The two sides finished the regular season with identical 13-5 records. In their two meetings, Werribee Districts won both games, but those were by a kick or less. If Spotswood can rediscover the effort it showed in the first three quarters of the loss to Deer Park on Saturday, it could bounce back. Sustaining that intensity for the full four quarters will be the key. “Our tackling and pressure on their ball carrier was pretty good,” Eames said. “We just didn’t sustain it for four quarters, which has been a bit of a tale for our year to be honest. “They just lifted their tempo and we couldn’t go with them. “We were in it for three quarters and the class of Deer Park stood up in the last quarter and got us.” Werribee Districts will go into the contest in red hot form after thrashing Hoppers Crossing by 68 points in the elimination final. Western Jets start to fire in the cauldron of finals Belief is starting to grow for the Western Jets in the NAB League finals. The Jets produced an impressive come-from-behind eight-point win over Northern Knights in the elimination final at Mars Stadium on Saturday. It comes hot on the heels of the Jets’ big 50-point win over Greater Western Victoria Rebels in the wildcard round that ended their three-game losing streak towards the back end of the home-and-away campaign. “Finals are a different kettle of fish,” Jets football operations manager Matthew Dervan said. “It’s hard not to get really excited by the way they’re playing. “When you win a final away from Melbourne against an opposition we struggled with a couple of weeks earlier, it was pure elation on the boys as the siren went. “They couldn’t wait to get into the rooms after the game and sing the song and they sang it with gusto. “It was great to see all the parents and the families get around and support them as well.”

A wildly fluctuating first half between the Jets and the Knights was all to do with the wind blowing ferociously to one end of the Ballarat stadium. The Knights had the aid of the breeze in the first quarter and led 37-1 at quarter-time after booting six goals to nil in the first term. The Jets returned fire with a six-goal-to-nil

quarter of their own to have scores dead-locked at half-time. The third quarter is where the Jets began to lay their foundations for victory, managing to kick three goals into the wind, an end where there were only four goals kicked for the whole game. “It was important that we were able to score against the wind,” Dervan said. “We got ourselves two crumbing goals and a nice set shot from Aaron Clarke and that gave us a bit of momentum heading into the last quarter.” Down by five points at three-quarter time, Western Jets sealed the win with a three-goal-to-one last quarter. Archi Manton was a key focal point again for the Jets with four goals. It is not only the goals that Manton is kicking that is proving valuable for his side. “He’s become a very reliable target,” Dervan said. “He’s creating a contest in the air and doing the work on the ground, and he’s rewarding himself by converting his chances, especially from the set shots.”

Will Kennedy competed hard in the ruck for the Jets. The former Sandringham Dragons player has been a leader for the Jets all season. “He’s doing a power of work for us in the ruck and he’s a good guide for the younger guys,” Dervan said. Keelan Crimmins has been as dependable as any of the Jets defenders this season. He is one of the quiet achievers of the side. “You give him a job and he does it for us,” Dervan said. “He provides good impact in the air defensively.” Some of the Jets bottom-age players got in on the act as well. Nash Reynolds kicked two goals and brought a lot of energy as a high half forward and Lucas Failli impacted at ground level both in the midfield and forward line. Roosters dare to dream By Lance Jenkinson After coming back from the dead earlier in the season, anything is now possible for Altona Roosters in the NRL Victoria first grade. The Roosters started the season 0-5, but have been red hot ever since, winning 12 of their next 13 games on their way to the grand final. It took a dramatic golden point in extra time for the Roosters to come through with a 25-24 victory over three-time defending champions Werribee Bears in the preliminary final at Langama Park on Saturday. A long range field goal from wunderkind five-eighth Pita-Will Purcell clinched the win that has sent the Roosters to the grand final, where they will meet the Truganina Rabbitohs in a decider at Haines Drive Reserve on Saturday. Roosters player-coach Jackson Brenchley was shocked by the audacity of Purcell to attempt the field goal, but when he did, he was pleasantly surprised when it went through. “I was trying to do the percentage play and

kick the ball into the corner,” Brenchley said. “He said ‘nah, give me the ball’ and I was in shock when he kicked it. I couldn’t believe it, the game was over and we’ve just won. “It was a risky play, but these young kids just don’t get shaken by those moments. “I don’t know how they do it.” Altona was in total command at half-time. The Roosters led 16-4 at the break and seemed to be coasting to victory. Werribee would have none of it. The Bears are a never-say-die outfit. You don’t win three titles in a row and merely wave the white flag. The Bears launched an incredible comeback to force extra time. With all of the momentum sapped out of his team, Brenchley thought his side’s chances might have diminished. “They were the dominant side in the second half,” he said. “They had all the momentum really.” Purcell showed once again why he is so highly rated at Altona.

Altona Gators have pulled off a major coup, securing the services of Australian Basketball hall of fame inductee Lanard Copeland to coach the senior men’s program in 2020. It was perhaps a harsh reflection on the Gators’ season because of their competitiveness in most matches and the fact they were one of the few teams to operate without an import. The arrival of Copeland will provide a massive boost for the men’s program. There are few bigger names in Australian basketball. Copeland has played in the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Clippers. When he arrived in Australia in 1992, he linked up with the Melbourne Tigers in the National Basketball League and finished up one of the greatest in the league by the time he retired in 2008. The 54-year-old was a two-time NBL champion with the Tigers. He finished his playing career with short stints with the Brisbane Bullets and Adelaide 36ers. Lexus mixes style with sport By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Lexus ES 300h F Sport will join the existing 300h Luxury and Sports Luxury grades in Australia from October. It will have a mesh grille with jet black plating, a sharper bumper profile and rear garnish and be distinguished by F Sport fender badging. Triple-beam LED headlamps with sequential turn indicators and adaptive high beam complete the visual upgrades. Inside are contoured and F Sport-embossed front seats, perforated-leather F Sport steering wheel and Lexus-first Hadori aluminium ornamentation. It has a Sport 8.0-inch TFT driver display. Customers have a choice of F Sport Flare Red and F Sport Black interior trim options, each with standard black rooflining and available to individually match with 10 exterior colour options – including a luminous, F Sport-exclusive Cobalt Mica. It will ride on 19-inch F Sport alloy wheels and have F Sport-exclusive Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS). There are five drive modes: including Eco, Normal, Sport S, Sport S+ and Custom. Lexus has been dragging the chain on infotainment, but with the release of the ES 300h F Sport every ES 300h variant will incorporate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. This will feature a large 12.3-inch centre display. As with others in the range, the F Sport will have wireless smartphone charging, satellite navigation, voice control, DAB+, Lexus Enform and a 10-speaker audio. Standard Lexus Safety System+ (LSS+) includes a pre-collision safety system that
