Hobsons Bay’s first major cinema complex is set to open in Altona North by mid 2020 as part of the city’s biggest shopping and commercial centre development. Property fund manager Charter Hall is building the $70 million centre at 290-298 Millers Road, which is the last stage of the $250 million Millers Junction precinct. The six-screen, 3000 square metre cinema complex will be next to a Woolworths-anchored shopping centre whose confirmed tenants include BWS and The Reject Shop. Millers Junction Retail is the fourth stage of the Millers Junction precinct, which also includes a business park and homemaker centre. Charter Hall diversified development head Ben Dodwell said the cinema operator was expected to be revealed in coming weeks. “We’re in the final stages of negotiation,” he said. “We’ve sought and received consent from council for the usage and we’re very excited about the prospect of opening it in the first half of next year. “It will be a full-scale cinema.” The next closest cinemas are Village at Pacific Werribee and Sunshine, Sun Theatre in Yarraville and Hoyts at Highpoint. Mr Dodwell said a cinema filled a gap in Hobsons Bay, particularly for younger people. “We have been chasing entertainment and a really good anchor for the centre that pitches into the desire to keep local people local,” he said. “We’ve been pushing for that for some time. “We think it’s a tremendous idea and we thought the idea was strong enough to present it to council and seek approval.” Mr Dodwell said upon completion, Millers Junction Retail would have about 13,700 square metres of shopping space including the supermarket and liquor store, specialty shops, large format retail showrooms, cinema, ‘quick service’ restaurants and a possible further 9000 square metre commercial and retail space proposed along Cabot Drive, which is subject to council approval. “We’ve always seen Altona as being a hub of activity,” Mr Dodwell said. “The key to it is to be honourable to its original roots as being an industrial precinct and to create an urban renewal of what was a formerly industrial precinct. “We have, for some time, been trying to respond to council’s desire to create more leisure and activity-based things for local residents to stay local.”

Acholly Arow has a firm message for all young people: never lose sight of your dreams. The Victoria University student was recently selected to represent her native South Sudan in the 2019 Miss International beauty pageant, to be held in Tokyo in November. “I have dreamt about representing South Sudan in the Miss International beauty pageant for quite a long time,” she said. “I am a firm believer in encouraging the youth to follow their dreams, no matter how much it scares them.” Ms Arow, 25, moved from South Sudan to Australia with her family at the age of eight. She became involved in beauty pageants in her teens to help build her confidence, finding a platform that has helped her highlight issues she is passionate about. The political science student has set her sights on tackling violence against women and hopes to one day take her place as a member of Parliament. “I think there should be more women at the decision-making table,” she said. Ms Arow paid tribute to her “loving family” for their support. “Thank you everyone for the love and support, it has been overwhelming and I’ll do my best to make you proud.” The 2019 Miss International pageant will be held November 12 in Tokyo, Japan. Victory park plans in limbo By Benjamin Millar The bitter fight over plans by Melbourne Victory to build a soccer academy in Footscray Park is likely to drag into next year following a recommendation for further investigations before the proposal is approved. A draft master plan drawn up for the park included the new soccer academy on the western flank, but the proposal became mired in controversy ahead of a vote by Maribyrnong councillors that was due at last night’s council meeting.

A council report recommended rejecting the draft master plan until a new community advisory panel reviewed the proposal and explored alternative options for Footscray Park. Community consultation on the draft Footscray Park Masterplan drew 104 online survey responses and more than 1500 written submissions, 54 per cent supporting the proposal while 45 per cent were opposed. A Metropolis Research survey of 516 residents in the vicinity of Footscray Park found 31 per cent in support, 36 per cent opposed and 33 per cent undecided.

The report found the facilities would benefit community clubs and groups outside of Melbourne Victory training times, but noted concerns related to the proposed fencing, which was seen as privatisation of the park. “The football facility component received significant support and opposition, raising a number of issues requiring further resolution,” the report stated. “At present it is recommended that the draft master plan be rejected.” Melbourne Victory Football Club made an eleventh-hour bid for the academy to proceed

by stitching up a formal partnership with the all-female Maribyrnong Swifts Football Club. Victory announced on Saturday that if given the green light the partnership with the Swifts would improve pathways for female players and coaches. Swifts vice president Diana Drury said the deal would be a “game changer” for her club. Charges loom over Tottenham fire EPA’s lengthy investigation has been carried out in parallel to an ongoing police investigation into the cause of the suspicious fire and any potential links with organised crime. A coronial inquest is also under way at the request of fire authorities and the union representing firefighters who suffered from ill health after fighting the toxic blaze. Site owner Christopher James Baldwin, via his company Danbol Pty Ltd, has been ordered to remove all high risk chemical waste from the site within 12 months. clean up the Somerville Road site by August 17 next year. “This notice is the first step as part of the long-term clean-up of the fire site and aims to minimise the harmful impacts of pollution and waste,” he said. The company has until February 18 to provide a waste removal plan setting out time frames and detail as to where the waste is going and how it will be transported. “Once EPA is satisfied … it will allow the company to proceed with the removal of the waste,” Mr Pendrigh said.

Charges could be imminent over the toxic Tottenham warehouse fire that broke out 12 months ago this week, according to Victoria’s environmental authority. Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has been investigating potential breaches of environmental laws in the lead-up to the August 30 fire – Melbourne’s biggest industrial fire in decades – and expects to lay charges before the end of this year. The 14,000 square metre fire, which sent a black plume of smoke across the inner-west, was fuelled by an illegally dumped chemical cocktail of toxic waste and scrap metal.

One of Australia’s largest shipping container logistics firms has signed a 10-year lease on a $45 million warehouse and container park at Salta Properties’ Altona inland port. Sydney-based ACFS Port Logistics will join global shipping giant Maersk Shipping Lane in the family owned developer’s Nexus Industrial Altona terminal, an inland port designed to handle fully loaded containers in bulk. The facility will eventually be fully connected by rail to the Port of Melbourne and is part of the Port Rail Shuttle Network, designed to reduce truck trips into the port by 3500 per day. About 5500 trucks visit the port on a daily basis now. Truck movements in Melbourne’s west have become a hot political issue for the state government, amid growing opposition from residents and traffic gridlock on the West Gate Bridge. The rail connection is waiting for government approval and the construction of a spur line, both expected next year, Salta managing director Sam Tarascio said. Mr Tarascio said signing ACFS was a “milestone transaction” for the terminal. ACFS has taken a seven-hectare site in the facility, on which Salta will build the container handler a 25,000-square-metre warehouse and 37,000 square metres of container ‘hardstand’. Earlier this year the state government provided $16.2 million in funding to freight handler Austrak’s Somerton facility and $9.5 million to SCT Logistics in Altona to connect their freight hubs to the Port of Melbourne by rail.

Big smiles for film win A film festival win has put a smile on the dial of Yarraville Special Developmental School. The school’s documentary, My Painted Smile, picked up a prize last Thursday in the NOVA Employment 2019 Focus On Ability Short Film Awards. The school was awarded the $1000 NOVA Employment Choice Award for being the Victorian school that best represented the festival’s theme of inclusion. The short film was a collaboration between teacher Greg Gozdz and student Tommy Lee. Mr Gozdz said the award ceremony and film screening was a great event, topped off with receiving the prize.

Game on for Seaholme director By Goya Dmytryshchak Seaholme director Daina Reid has received her first Emmy nomination for The Handmaid’s Tale, up against formidable rivals including Game of Thrones. Reid, whose previous work includes Romper Stomper, The Wrong Girl, Offspring and Sunshine, will fly to the US next month for the awards. Her nomination for most outstanding directing for a drama series is for The Handmaid’s Tale ‘Holly’ episode, which features Oprah Winfrey as the voice of resistance radio station, Radio Free America. More plaudits for pooch portraits By Benjamin Millar Yarraville photographer Belinda Richards has added another win to her growing swag of awards. The pet portraitist behind Frog Dog Studios was named 2019 Australian Pet/ Animal Photographer of the Year at the recent national Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) Awards. Judges recognised Ms Richards for her talents in capturing canine companions in humorous and unexpected poses. She is no stranger to success at the AIPP Awards, also picking up last year’s title of Australian Emerging Photographer of the Year. Ms Richards was also honoured as the 2019 Nikon NZIPP International Photographer of the Year. The latest award followed three days of intense judging by experts in the photographic industry, sifting through more than 1600 entries. Ms Richards’ strong portfolio picked up two golds, one silver distinction and a silver. With a background in animal welfare, she credits her connection with the subjects of her photographs as the key to her success. “Having worked with animals for most of my working life, I feel like my second language is dog,” she said. “I can intuitively see what the dog is going to do next, which allows me to capture the perfect moment which becomes the basis of my digital composites.” Ms Richards said entering the awards helps her push herself creatively and gives her an idea of where she sits in the industry. “It is daunting and at times quite stressful, but is one of the most incredible and rewarding things to be a part of,” she said.

Great day for a Magpie diehard By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona North’s Bill Brown has had one of the best days of his life – meeting Collingwood football legends just weeks after collapsing from a heart attack at his local Bunnings. Mr Brown was “30 seconds from death” when workers used a defibrillator to save him last month. He returned to the store to thank the staff, but had one regret – that his beloved Collingwood jacket had to be cut from his body by paramedics. Mr Brown was invited to visit Collingwood’s headquarters where he not only chose a new jacket from the Magpie shop, but got to meet some of his favourite players, past and present, and watch a training session. Mr Brown, 86, said he was treated “like a king”. “I met Simon Prestigiacomo, who I remembered through 2010 because he was the chap who stepped down – he said he couldn’t play in a grand final; somebody took his place and now, his old No.35 is used by their first recruit every year that goes to Collingwood,” Mr Brown said. “Then they took me to pick a coat out – they said, ‘Take your pick’ – and I picked out a nice lovely coat. “I met two of my idols which I have idolised since I’ve been following Collingwood – Peter McKenna and Barry Price – along with some of the present-day players. “It was just extraordinary. I’m that happy that I didn’t have to die to get to see it. “To be quite candid, since the day I married my wife, and my children were born and my grandchildren were born, I’ve never had such a great day.”

Stalker victim empowers others By Goya Dmytryshchak After being stalked, Rachel Cassidy spent five and a half years compiling a book to empower others. Cassidy, who is the chief executive of the Stop Stalking Now Foundation, will be giving an author’s talk in Altona North next month about her book, Stalked: The Human Target. She interviewed hundreds of survivors, forensic psychologists, lawyers and police specialising in the crime – and one perpetrator. “It was really confronting,” she said. “I knew

his background and I knew what he’d done and I thought immediately I would feel the hairs on the back of my neck and I would feel some type of reaction to him. “But if I had not known what he had done, I would have engaged in conversation with him quite comfortably and not realised that he was a perpetrator. “One forensic psychologist that I spoke to said that she had a victim where the woman had missed her train at the train station and she was drumming her fingers waiting for the next train and the stalker thought that was a

Leading teacher Amanda Elmer said the school would hold its inaugural Great Book Swap over two days next month. She said quality titles, donated by the wider school community, would be selling for just $1 or $2. “All of the book sale proceeds will go towards the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, which is awesome, too, in closing that equity gap that exists,” Ms Elmer said. “We know, through NAPLAN, for example, that the equity gap is about three and half years just based on whether they’ve been born to an indigenous family or they haven’t. “Indigenous children are three and a half years behind their non-indigenous peers in terms of their learning. “This foundation goes some way towards

addressing that by getting good-quality books to primary indigenous kids.” Ms Elmer said the sale was likely to become an annual event. “It’s exciting to have the first-ever book swap and I have been so overwhelmed with the support of the community,” she said. “Now what we want is for people to come and look at the books and pick up a bargain.” The Great Book Swap will be on Friday, September 6, from 2-4.30pm and Saturday, September 7, from 9am-1pm at the school, with entry from Grieve Parade. He hopped on the train with her and he followed her home and he ended up stalking her for three and a half years.” Among the stalking survivors she interviewed was former Dancing with the Stars judge Mark Wilson. “Mark Wilson had his studio burnt down twice and they threatened to burn down his house, as well, so it was absolutely devastating for him and his entire family,” Cassidy said. She said her talk would offer support and resources.

“This is bringing people together who can see that they’re not isolated, they’re not alone, that there are others out there,” Cassidy said. “Some people in the audience are victims of stalking, some work in particular areas related to it. “Others just have an interest. Some people are family members and some want to just understand what this is all about and gain more education and more awareness.” Cassidy will speak at Altona North library on Wednesday, September 4, from 6.30-7.30pm. Bike hub settles in at Footscray By Benjamin Millar The wheels of community spirit are turning at the Inner West Community Bike Hub. Formed as a one-off Refugee Week project by the Rotary Club of Footscray in 2014, with the aim of providing recycled bikes for refugees living in Maribyrnong, the not-for-profit organisation has been rolling along for the past five years. After running “on the smell of an oily rag” at the former Maribyrnong council depot in Mills Close near Footscray Park, donating more than 650 bikes to refugees along the way, the hub has

a brand new home on Moreland Street thanks to a state government grant via the Pick My Project initiative. Hub president Rodney Johnstone said the new location enables the hub to continue its core program of repairing and restoring bikes to donate to refugees and others in need, while expanding its offerings in new directions. “It’s just gone from strength to strength over time, thanks to a small band of volunteers,” he said. “The idea with the new location is we will still run our program on Saturdays as well as looking from Monday to Friday to offer bike

servicing and repairs.” Money raised from bike servicing will be used to help expand social programs such as the bike donations and working with schools on increasing bike safety and education. Mr Johnstone said the wider community can assist by donating unused bikes, getting their bikes serviced via the hub, or volunteering their time if they have appropriate skills. Still got the ride stuff Williamstown’s John and Kathy Pearson are gearing up for their 14th Great Victorian Bike Ride. Bicycle Network’s 650-kilometre ride, from November 22 to December 1, will take in South Australia’s Limestone Coast, Great Ocean Road and Otway Ranges. Mr Pearson said the weather on most of their rides had been perfect, but it played a big part in some funny stories. “The first year we rode, in 2004, it rained most of the night at Gellibrand and the next day was so cold in Lavers Hill, the frittata for lunch was still frozen,” he said. “In 2006, on a very hot day riding to Myrtleford, we decided to stop for a cool refreshing, nudie swim in the Ovens River – that way we could still ride in to town in dry lycra.” Mr Pearson said his most memorable

experience was in 2013 on Turtons Track, between Beech Forrest and Forrest. “The only sounds were birds as we rolled around corners between the mossy tree-fern glades,” he said. “Moments of morning sunshine glistened through the majestic trees. We rolled into Forrest and enjoyed hot coffee in front of a blazing open fire at the welcoming local cafe. A completely enchanting, dreamlike ride experience we will never forget.” Those who can’t get away for 10 days can join the first five days from Robe to Port Fairy or the last five days from Port Fairy to Torquay. Green focus on glass

School works for Footscray

By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay residents are being asked to reflect on the way they recycle glass as councils scramble to find solutions to the recycling crisis. With the collapse of the council’s recycling contractor, SKM Recycling, about 175 tonnes of kerbside recycling collected each week is going to the Cleanaway Melbourne Regional Landfill at Ravenhall. Hobsons Bay residents are being urged to drop off household glass, paper and plastic waste every Saturday at the council’s Altona operations centre. Material collected at the centre is diverted from landfill and sent to Truganina recycling company Australian Paper Recovery for sorting. About 200 carloads of recycling was taken by residents to the depot on the first Saturday of the trial, which equates to about 1.3 tonnes. By the third Saturday 544 carloads were dropped off. Australian Paper Recovery managing director Darren Thorpe said the company had received a $475,000 grant from Sustainability Victoria, and added $1.5 million of its own, toward upgrading the facility to enable it to receive material from councils. Mr Thorpe said glass was the biggest contaminant of recycling and his company was trying to start up a ‘glass out’ campaign. “Glass is a very valuable commodity on its own but when it’s mixed in with all the other recyclables, which is the current practice, it contaminates all the other products. “Our mantra is ‘glass out’. “We’re working closely with the City of Yarra and they’re doing a trial at the moment with some 1300 homes … to separate the glass at the residents’ houses.

for road resurfacing works. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden praised Hobsons Bay residents for their recycing efforts. He said more than 130 cubic metres of recyclables had been saved from landfill in the first fortnight of the council’s depot trial.

Work is under way on a new $16 million school building to help cater for an expected 700 students at the revamped Gilmore Girls College, part of the new Footscray High School. Education Minister James Merlino joined Williamstown MP Melissa Horne and Footscray MP Katie Hall last week to turn the first sod on construction of a new three-storey building that will anchor the junior campus. Work recently finished on a nearby $5.1 million design, arts, technology and science building that expands two existing buildings into a new integrated hub. The Barkly Street junior secondary campus will cater for co-ed junior students, along with the Seddon junior secondary campus still to be constructed on Pilgrim Street. Senior students will attend the senior secondary campus, currently Footscray City College. The school will be led by executive principal Frank Vetere, with the appointments announced last week of John Box as principal of the Barkly Street junior campus and Vicki Tentzoglidis as the senior campus principal. Mr Merlino said the state government was spending more than $80 million rebuilding the high school. “We’re ensuring every child can have a great education at their local public school,” he said. Robots point to a Bright Future

Robotics and virtual reality technology feature highly in this year’s round of Mobil Bright Future Grants. Through the 2019 Bright Future Grants program, 26 schools and kindergartens close to the Mobil Altona Refinery and Yarraville Terminal received a grant of up to $4000 each for a variety of maths and science resources and projects. In total, Mobil distributed more than $80,000 to projects in the area. “We are definitely seeing a trend to more high-tech equipment among the innovative projects supported this year,” said Altona Refinery Community Relations Adviser Nikki Calcraft. “Apart from a variety of robotic projects we have also supported the purchase of drones as well as tablets and iPads.” Altona Refinery Manager Riccardo Cavallo said he was very encouraged to see the advancing technology in the Bright Future Grants. “This is a reflection of our increasing use of innovative technology to improve the way we operate our facilities,” he said. “As we continue to tackle the daunting challenges of meeting growing energy needs while reducing emissions, we are going to be relying heavily on innovative technological advances from future generations. “This is why programs, like our Bright Futures Grants, that inspire children to pursue careers in science, engineering and mathematics, are so important.” It’s now ten years since the Bright Futures Program began and over that time ExxonMobil has distributed over $1.4 million to schools and kindergartens in Australia.

Altona site back on the market By Goya Dmytryshchak A site with approved plans for a five-storey, 19-dwelling apartment block and commercial space is for sale in Altona’s Pier Street shopping strip. The 703-square-metre site at 108 Pier Street last sold in 2017 for $2.05 million. The present two-storey building was formerly the Keima Press printing business, which moved to Williamstown North after the property was sold. The sale comes as plans for three five-storey

apartment blocks with shops, on a former petrol station site next door, are placed on public exhibition. The former Aero Wash n Fuel service station at 102-106 Pier Street was bulldozed last August to make way for development. Allard Shelton real estate agency is selling 108 Pier Street with a planning permit for a five-storey development, with generously-sized apartments aimed at owner-occupiers. The top two levels would have three-bedroom apartments, while the two-bedroom apartments would be about 70 square metres.

Twenty-five parking spaces are proposed, including 22 in stacker systems. The listing describes the site as being in a “booming residential hot spot surrounded by quality retailers and service providers, only 500 metres to Altona beach”. Selling agent Martin Huang said there had been “quite a bit of interest” in the property. “The vendor has got a permit on it and wants to sell it because he’s not in a position to build at this stage,” he said. “I think $3.5 million will get the deal across the line.”

Rock solid exhibition Ancient religious rituals in hand-carved rock churches have been captured in a Yarraville photographer’s first solo photography exhibition. Gabriel Jia travelled to the Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches in the Amhara region of northern Ethiopia earlier this year, drawn by the distinctive rock-cut churches dating from the 12th and 13th centuries that remain pilgrimage sites for Coptic Christians. Timing his visit with Easter rituals and rising early to capture the solemn ceremonies, Jia captured the images that now form his debut solo exhibition, The Hidden Pilgrimage. Jia said the church complex, painstakingly carved into rock in a maze formation complete with secret tunnels, captured his imagination as a young boy. “I saw a photo of the rock-hewn churches recently and realised it was the same image I had seen as a boy,” he said.

“I took two weeks’ leave at Easter, found a local guide when I arrived and went to the churches at 4am.” A full-time civil engineer, photography is Jia’s sideline passion. He said The Hidden Pilgrimage developed from being in the right place at the right time, observing the churches being used in the same way they have been used for more than 800 years. The Hidden Pilgrimage will be on show at the Sunstudios Skylight Gallery in South Melbourne until August 31. Their anthology explores people’s experiences of growing up as members of the Arab community in Australia and identity, belonging and isolation. Abdel-Fattah is a post-doctoral research fellow at Macquarie University, researching the impact of the September 11 terror attacks on Muslim and non-Muslim young people. Saleh is a poet and activist for refugee rights and racial justice who has spent the past decade working with Amnesty International

and CARE International in Australia and the Middle East. MY PLACE Altona’s Maureen Lane is a descendant of the first white child born in Footscray. She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak.

I grew up in Yarraville, but lived in Altona for two years in the early 1970s when I had the Somers Parade milk bar. Later I became a teacher and my first teaching job was at Queen of Peace in Altona Meadows. Seven years ago, I returned to Altona to retire and be closer to my daughter and grandchildren. What do you like about Altona? When I moved back to Altona, I felt like I was on a permanent vacation – the proximity to the beach and the single street shopping precinct made me remember childhood holidays by the sea. I felt like I was where I belonged. What don’t you like or what could be improved? Parking can be an issue with the large developments in the area. What’s your favourite cafe and/or restaurant? So many lovely cafes! If I want cheap and cheerful – Salt n Pepa. If I want magnificent ricotta pancakes – Vince and Me. Candy Rock for a great salad or burger. You’re a descendant of the first white child born in Footscray? I often joke that I am part of Footscray’s aristocracy! My great-grandmother was the first white child born in Footscray – that was

Saltwater River. She was Elizabeth Koch nee Pickett and the child of Margaret and William Pickett, who ran the punt across the river and the Ship Inn and then the Punt Hotel. Margaret and William had three children in a tent off little Bourke Street before moving to the Footscray area where Elizabeth was born – the first white child born in the area. The local indigenous people were not allowed in Melbourne after dark, so they made their way to Footscray gardens area to camp overnight and fish in the river. The Pickett family had a reciprocal arrangement with the locals and gave them flour and sugar while the son, Joe Pickett, learnt to fish and catch eels from his new indigenous friends. Elizabeth Pickett stayed in Footscray all her life, married Valentine Wilhelm Theodor Koch and had 13 surviving children. What are you passionate about? History and writing. When I moved to Altona, I became a member of the Altona-Laverton Historical Society and have contributed to two of their recent publications: Altona & Surrounds – a Patchwork of Memories and Altona Hospital – A Bush Hospital on the Bay Bay. What have been some of the recent projects you’ve been involved in? At the moment I am researching and recording the history of Nostalgia Drag Racers Club and also writing a biography of a local lad who was a member of a motorbike club that was once part of Williamstown’s history.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir is looking forward to Cafe Sunshine’s future Consider the Sauce has observed, on the Cafe Sunshine Facebook page, a very nice looking falafel plate being spruiked. A dish that isn’t on the menu when we visit. And the dishes enjoyed on two previous solo visits by CTS senior are no longer on the current menu either. Cafe Sunshine and SalamaTea is a newish operation right in the heart of Sunshine. If they’re still finding their feet, some menu tinkering is for sure in order. Even better, I suspect new and surprising dishes will continue to pop up here with regularity, depending on the whims and passions of whoever is in the kitchen and what is available from the joint’s suppliers. This will suit anyone prepared to go with the freewheeling flow of the place. Perhaps not so much those who expect a menu to be a menu and that’s that. That would very much be their loss – for the food here is rather wonderful, provides a distinct point of difference in Sunshine and is ultra-affordable. As well, the place is also very much about providing employment and more for refugees and asylum seekers. The simple fare is largely of Persian nature, with eggs the big players, in a warm and welcoming cafe. And I’m told evening meals are in the soon-come category. Bennie likes his Persian breakfast ($13) very much – including the tahini dip flavoured with

Also included are fig jam, butter and a concoction of walnut and sheep feta. I share the same basket of bread – more is happily supplied upon request – with my Persian omelette ($15). This is simple and sensational – eggs and feta sent into the dizzy heights by the plethora of fresh mint and other herbs on the side. The vegan baklava ($3) does show the absence of butter – it’s drier than regular baklava – but is still enjoyable, as are our $3.50 cafe lattes.

If you find a property that appeals, you can even find out when it last sold and for how much. There could be old photographs online that will show you if subsequent owners have done any renovations. Plus, there will be any number of comparable properties in the area. It is important that you do this research independently of the selling agent, if only for the peace of mind it will give you: no matter what you hear from other sources – the current owners, the selling agent, your family – you will know what the facts are because of your own research.

Footscray has snatched an improbable top four finish in the Hockey Victoria men’s premier league. The Bulldogs seemed destined to miss out on a finals double chance, but pulled off something of a miracle in the final two home-and-away rounds. On the penultimate weekend, Footscray came back from the dead to beat Hawthorn 5-4 after scoring four goals in the last eight minutes. It kept the Bulldogs’ slim hopes of a double chance alive entering the final round, but even a win against Brunswick would not have been enough to break into the top four. The Bulldogs needed to win big to make up a sizeable five goals of score difference on Greensborough and they did just that with a stunning 11-0 annihilation of Brunswick at the Footscray Hockey Centre on Saturday. Footscray coach Jarrod Lester said it was “very rare” to win in such a destructive manner,

but with the arsenal that his side possesses, anything was possible. “It was a big win,” he said. “It was pretty important that we had a big win to boost our goal difference so we could finish in fourth position. “We’ve certainly got the firepower to beat any side. “We were pretty confident if we did things right and shared the ball, we’d be able to create a number of opportunities.” Footscray ran riot to score 11 unanswered goals. Liam Braithwaite had a field day, scoring five goals. It was a continuation of the strong form he has enjoyed since the mid-point of the season. “His second half of the year has been really good,” Lester said. “He’s working hard both ways, defensive and offensively. Opportunities came his way and he finished quite well.”

Jets’ double celebration By Lance Jenkinson Can a spectacular wildcard Sunday inspire the Western Jets to great things in the NAB League finals? The Jets were almost down and out heading into wildcard weekend after losing their last three home-and-away games by sizeable margins. What better way to breathe life back into your season than with a 50-point win over Greater Western Victoria Rebels. The victory came on the back of a seven-goal-to-nil final term at Box Hill City Oval on a historic day when captain Lucas Rocci became the first Jets player to take out the Morrish Medal for best-and-fairest in the competition. “It was a very good day for the club,” Jets football operations manager Matthew Dervan said. “Days like this are certainly enjoyable when you get to celebrate a win on the field and a first in the club’s history off the field as well. “There were a few doubts about our form coming into the game, which we were really keen to rectify. “We got off to a little bit of a slower start than we would’ve liked, but from the second quarter onwards we really hit a groove. “While the Rebels were hanging around with us in the second and third quarters, once we were able to get some reward for our hard work and dominance, we really put the foot down. “We really got the reward for all the hard work and effort that was made in the opening few quarters.” Leading by just two points at three-quarter time, Western Jets finished with a flurry, kicking 7.6 and holding the Rebels scoreless. The match-winner for the Jets was forward Archi Manton. Manton, the son of former Essendon and Carlton defender Glenn, kicked 4.3 from 13 possessions. With 32 goals, Manton is the leading goalkicker in the league. Always an aerial threat, Manton has added another significant string to his bow. “He obviously knows where the goals are, he’s been really consistent for us across the year and he provides a real good aerial target for us, but over the last month his ground work, once the ball has hit the deck, he’s really developed,” Dervan said. “He’s developed that side of his game to an elite level. “He’s a pivotal player for us, a key target down forward.” Lucas Failli, who played as a small forward

and midfielder, finished with three goals, while Aaron Clarke added two. The clean sheet was a nice addition to a perfect game for Footscray. “If we get our structures right, we think we can be dangerous [in the finals],” Lester said. “It’s just a matter of our defence holding up and everyone contributing to that team defence.” Footscray will get the first crack at minor premiers Southern United, knowing a win will take them straight through to the preliminary final. Wolves set their sights on grand result Spotswood has fired the first shots in the Western Region Football League senior women’s finals. The Wolves had to dig deep to break the resolve of Caroline Springs and record a 25-point win in the qualifying final at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. Wolves coach Theo Theodorou has overseen the most attacking side in the competition, but he knew it was going to take a lot of patience and mental strength to overcome a stern challenge in week one of the finals. “We’ve been one of the higher scoring teams, but when you get to finals it’s obviously a whole new ball game,” he said. “We knew it was going to be hard and tough and a close game. It was a real gutsy win.” The first half was an arm-wrestle, but Lauren Dundon put on a show. Dundon kicked her side’s only two goals to give Spotswood a five-point lead at half-time. Spotswood was in better command in the second half. Kayla Koropeckyj, Thalia Wright and Felicity Whelan got on top around the ball. Shani Dixon cashed in for the green and golds with two second-half goals. “We had to open up the game in the second half and play it back on our terms,” Theodorou said. “Once we got it opened up, we got it in our forward line pretty quick and our girls kicked the goals.” Spotswood has set up a heavyweight clash with minor premiers Manor Lakes for the right to go directly into the grand final. The two best sides in the competition during the home-and-away rounds will meet at Pennell Reserve on Saturday at 9.30am. The other semi-final will be a cut-throat game between Caroline Springs and Werribee Centrals at the same venue and time on Sunday. Spotswood will be hoping to keep the good times rolling after its netball team won the division 2 premiership two weeks ago and the under-18 girls football team clinched a fourth successive premiership with a 23-point win over Werribee Districts on Sunday. Altona is going to be hard to stop in September. The Vikings have relentlessly dismantled all before them en route to running away with the Western Region Football League division 1 minor premiership. Saade Ghazi’s troops finished a massive three games and percentage clear on top of the ladder and have all the momentum heading into the finals. The Vikings powered to the line with a 97-point mauling of St Albans at Grant Reserve on Saturday. Ghazi has been impressed with the Vikings ability to take care of the here and now and not get too far ahead of themselves. “Knowing that we were going to finish on top, sometimes you can sort of not stay in the moment and look forward instead of at the present time,” he said. “The boys really just focused on every game and played really well. “They were still desperate and doing all the team things right until the last couple of minutes [against St Albans]. “Guys were still throwing themselves on the footy and smothering and tackling when they

could’ve taken it a little bit easier.” It was a significant win for Altona. It means the Vikings have now beaten every team in the competition. More importantly, the Vikings came out with a clean bill of health, while maintaining the rage and momentum ahead of finals. “You’re not playing for a lot and you just don’t want any injuries,” Ghazi said. “Having said that, you don’t want to rest too many because you don’t want them playing themselves out of form. “We played our best side that we could against St Albans, we didn’t have many players out, so we had a strong team in and we played accordingly.” The Vikings gave up just two goals for the game – both in the second quarter. Altona’s defence the key By Lance Jenkinson Take a trip back in time and go back to May 11. Altona Roosters were 0-5, bottom of the NRL Victoria first grade ladder and in all sorts of trouble. Instead of writing the year off, the Roosters made some positional changes that took immediate effect and put the defensive side of their game into sharp focus because they were leaking far too many points. Their plight at the time seems a world away now that the Roosters have just won their first final, a runaway 40-24 semi-final win over North West Wolves at Bruce Comben Reserve on Saturday. The importance of that rough period in the season is not lost on playing coach Jackson Brenchley, as they have since won 11 of their next 12 games. The biggest change stemming from those early rounds was the addition of defensive coach Waka Wanahi. Wanahi’s profound impact could be found late in the win over the Wolves. Leading narrowly 28-24 and with their season hanging in the balance, Altona found a way to win a game they might have lost in the first five rounds with three tries in the last 20 minutes. Brenchley believes that part of the reason why Altona held on for a memorable win was because of the teachings from Wanahi. “He’s just taught us a bit about resilience,” Brenchley said. “He’s played Queensland Cup [for Burleigh Bears] for about 10 years and he’s brought us a lot of defensive structures, resilience and a lot of mindset training. “We did that earlier in the year and it’s sort of paying off now. “The last two weeks, the game has been in the balance late in the game and we’ve just run away with it. “That’s got a lot to do with it the mindset training and what we do in those situations.” The impact of two players at either end of their careers was crucial for Altona on Saturday. Rookie sensation Pita-Will Purcell and warhorse Joseph Smith had significant roles in the Roosters week one finals win. Purcell has been a revelation at five-eighth. He is a teenager who has taken to Victorian top-flight rugby league like a duck to water. “I’ve never seen a kid like that come in and just dominate first grade like it’s nothing to him,” Brenchley said. “The under-18 season finished and we’ve thrown him into first grade and he’s literally been the best player on the field for every game he’s played for first grade this year.

“He’s controlling the game for us. “He’s doing all the things you’d expect a seasoned half-back to do. “He’s barking orders, telling all the old blokes where to go and doing the right things.” Smith, the team captain, might be in his twilight years, but he has not lost any of his bite. The forward continued to chew up metres for Altona and does so with a minimum of fuss.

“He’s just a workhorse,” Brenchley said. “I reckon he’s the toughest bloke I know. “He just gets bashed every game and does all the tough stuff, but he always plays a full game every week.” Altona will face Werribee Bears in an all-west preliminary final at Sunbury on Saturday with the winner to face Truganina Rabbitohs in the grand final.

Bulldogs and Seagulls in western derby The biggest show in town on Saturday will be the highly anticipated all-west qualifying final between Footscray and Williamstown in the Victorian Football League at the VU Whitten Oval. The likelihood of the two sides meeting in week one of the finals as the second and third ranked clubs has been on the cards for a while. Now they get the chance to duke it out for local bragging rights in the pressure-cooker of a final for the chance to move straight through to the preliminary final. Picking a winner will be a hard task because both sides have been in red hot form in the second half of the year. Footscray enters on the back of an eight-game winning streak, though it has come under threat in the past two weeks, which has forced them to overcome extreme deficits to keep the winning run alive. Against Coburg on Saturday, the Bulldogs trailed by 43 points, but achieved a spectacular turnaround to win by 35 points at VU Whitten Oval. A week earlier against North Melbourne, the Bulldogs had to come back from 30 points down at quarter-time to win a thriller by a goal. Williamstown saw its nine-game unbeaten run come to an end on Saturday with an eight-point loss to Werribee in difficult conditions at Downer Oval. After conceding the opening four goals of the game, the Seagulls left themselves with too much work to do and their fightback attempt fell short. What has gone before for Footscray and Williamstown will be irrelevant when the ball is bounced to open the finals on Saturday. You can rest assured that both camps will put on a show for their fan bases and entertain the neutral VFL followers. With no AFL on this weekend, a massive crowd should be in attendance to see the latest installment of a Footscray-Williamstown rivalry that dates back to the 1800s.
