It’s been eight years since Barbara Sass has had a full meal. The Kings Park woman has a rare condition called gastroparesis – a disorder in which the stomach muscles are paralysed and unable to process food. A hickman line through her chest transports liquids and medication into her body, but her terminal condition means the 21-year-old weighs 27 kilograms and is experiencing gradual organ failure. “My stomach doesn’t empty, so if I try and eat or drink anything, I vomit everything I ingest up – including food and water, even extra saliva,” Barbara told Star Weekly. “When I was younger, I had bowel issues and my gastroparesis symptoms started when I was 12. I would eat a piece of food and couldn’t hold anything down. “Often I was told that I have bulimia and that I was making myself vomit, but I wasn’t. I want to eat, I don’t want to be sick, but there is no cure.” Intestinal failure, functional gut syndrome and severe malnutrition as well as social ostracisation and depression, are the harsh realities of her illness. Barbara’s battles don’t stop there. She needs expensive specialised equipment and her condition does not qualify for funding under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). She and her mother, Frances, Barbara’s full-time carer, live in transitional housing and both are on disability pensions. While they receive some support through the NDIS for mental health issues, the funding doesn’t stretch to cover a wheelchair, commode and a hospital-style bed that Barbara needs. Yarraville nurse Bianca Bertolini, who has been helping Barbara navigate health funding streams, has been raising $200 a fortnight needed to hire equipment with the help of friends and family – and sometimes from her own pocket. “There’s no place that seems to help out people that don’t fall under NDIS,” Ms Bertolini said. “The assistance that Barbara has received through the scheme is specifically to pay for someone to come and counsel her and someone to wash her or take her shopping.” Ms Bertolini has set up a crowdfunding campaign that has so far raised $2000. “I do it for her,” Ms Bertolini said. “It gets hard at times, but when I get frustrated, I think of Barbara and it keeps me going.” Donate: gofundme.com/f/do-it-for-barb

Faulty reno claim wins at VCAT By Benjamin Millar A West Footscray couple will be paid almost $100,000 by their house’s previous owners to cover the cost of fixing faulty renovations. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has ordered Jessica and Darren Mason to pay Cassandra and Darren Fraser $96,700 to fix problems with the Robbs Road house. The Masons bought the double-storey house in 2001, renovating it in four stages before selling it in 2013. After moving in to the house, the Frasers

became concerned about defects including a lack of waterproofing behind the tiles in a downstairs bathroom, rotten external weatherboards, faulty electrical wiring and a growing leak stain in a downstairs bedroom. The couple launched action in VCAT in January, 2018, seeking damages for breach of the warranties they argued were implied in the contract of sale. A week-long hearing was held in May this year before VCAT member Christopher Edquist. The Masons argued that under the Building

Act, the vendor warrants that all domestic building work carried out in relation to the construction of the house was carried out in a proper and workmanlike manner and that all materials were “good and suitable for the purpose for which they were used”. The Masons argued that works carried out between 2005 and 2009 were no longer covered by warranty, which was only applicable for six years and six months for works with a permit and final inspection or seven years otherwise. Mr Edquist, however, took the January, 2013, contract date as the critical date, finding

all works carried out after January 2006 were covered by the implied warranty. “I consider that where the warranties apply, they can, provided an occupancy permit has been issued or there is a certificate of final inspection, be sued upon until the expiration of 10 years after the date of issue of the occupancy permit, or the certificate, as the case requires,” he found. Mr Edquist ordered the Masons to pay the Frasers $96,700 to rectify problems, including $26,000 to make the stormwater drainage system compliant.

Straight line safety bid for jet skis Maritime Safety Victoria is asking for feedback on a proposed rule change for the use of personal watercraft, such as jet skis, in Port Phillip Bay. The proposed rule would prohibit “irregular riding” – such as wake and wave jumping, surfing, erratic changes of direction, weaving and freestyling such as sharp turns – in zones shared with swimmers and other water vessels. The rule, if introduced, would require people with personal water craft to navigate in a direct line through shared zones. Maritime Safety Victoria acting director Cameron Toy said the rule change was being proposed due to rising concerns about the safety of waterway users in shared zones. “The safety of swimmers and other people in the water is being compromised by the way some PWCs (personal water crafts) are being operated,” Mr Toy said. “In the six years to June, 2018, PWC registration grew by 55.6 per cent. “This growth has coincided with increasingly crowded shared zones and an increase in community complaints. “Our concern is for the safety of all waterway users and the proposed rule is intended to reduce the risk of death and serious injury by making PWC riding in shared zones more predictable.” Mr Toy said existing rules contained speed and distance limits for personal watercraft users. PA Burns Reserve and Altona Dog Beach closed

This winter, we are delivering some projects along the Seaholme foreshore to improve how our community moves and plays in our seaside open space. We ask for the patience of the community as we upgrade PA Burns Reserve, dredge the Altona Safe Harbour and carry out maintenance works on the Cherry Creek footbridge. Construction of the Bent Street Vehicle Access Ramp

Works are continuing on the construction of a vehicle access ramp to the Altona foreshore at Bent Street, which is due for completion at the end of September. This ramp will ensure that lifesavers and emergency services personnel can access the beach during an emergency and Council maintenance staff can remove seaweed and groom the beach. Recycling update

Council is implementing interim recyclables drop offs for Hobsons Bay residents weekly on Saturdays between 8am and 2pm at the Hobsons Bay City Council Operations Centre, Sugar Gum Drive in Altona. Most household recyclable material will be accepted at the drop offs. Residents are asked to sort and separate their recyclables into two skip bins, one for glass and another for paper / cardboard / plastic / cans. Recyclables that will be accepted in the paper / plastic bin include: soft drink bottles, milk bottles, shampoo bottles, detergent bottles; paper products such as cardboard, office paper, magazines and newspapers; and aluminium and steel cans. The interim drop offs follow the temporary closure of Council’s recycling contractors SKM, which has unfortunately resulted in Council’s collected recycling going to landfill. Electric charging stations

By the end of August, residents with electric cars will be able to recharge at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre carpark in Altona as part of a free trial. The 50 kW DC (direct current) charging station takes as little as 30-40 minutes to recharge DC charge compatible electric vehicles, depending on the vehicle and its battery state. The charging station will feature two connectors and will be free to use for a one-year trial period. Works commencing at Altona Sports Centre

Work on the first stage of the Altona Sports Centre has commenced to upgrade to the centre’s car park, outdoor netball courts and Andrew Park Drive entrance, paving the way for the future of sport in Hobsons Bay. The first stage will focus on the area outside the centre with a complete upgrade to parking, two new outdoor netball courts, Andrew Park Drive and the Queen Street roundabout. Council offers recycling alternative

She is among a groundswell of Hobsons Bay residents who are reducing the amount of waste they generate and thinking of innovative ways to recycle and re-use. Hobsons Bay council is urging residents to reduce waste following the closure of the council’s recycling contractor, SKM.

The council has introduced a fortnightly drop-off for recyclables at its Altona depot, with the next to be held on August 24. Ms Barham said she tried to divert as much waste from landfill as she could. “I get my coffee grounds from the local coffee shops and I use them for compost and fertiliser,” she said. “I get shredded paper from offices for compost and bedding for chooks and guinea pigs.” She has a bin outside her home for members of the community to drop off green waste for compost as part of the ShareWaste initiative. “People come and drop off everything, like grass cuttings, vegie scraps – all that sort of stuff,” she said. “It’s called ShareWaste, so people who live in apartments, they might not have an option and they don’t want to put their food in the bin, so they come to me as a drop-off point.”

Ms Barham takes soft plastics to a local supermarket for recycling. While Hobsons Bay had been one of only four Victorian councils that recycled plastic shopping bags, Coles and Woolworths supermarkets accept flexible plastics for recycling.

Hobsons Bay residents can drop off recyclables at the council’s Altona depot every second Saturday from August 24. The council will accept recyclables fortnightly until further notice at the operations centre in Sugar Gum Drive. It follows the collapse of SKM Recycling, which was declared insolvent by the Supreme Court on August 2. The company’s closure has forced more than 30 Victorian councils to come up with alternative recycling solutions. At least 60 per cent of materials that would previously have been processed by SKM Recycling could go to landfill. Most household recyclables will be accepted at Hobsons Bay’s operations centre and residents are asked to pre-sort and separate materials. There will be two skip bins at the centre – one will be for glass and the other for paper, plastic and cans. The council has partnered with Australian Paper Recovery to recycle the items. Kerbside recycling bins will still be collected but will go to landfill, so the council is urging residents whose bins are not full to give their collection a miss and store their recyclables. Braybrook road death

A man in his 40s has died after being struck by a car while crossing Ballarat Road in Braybrook. The man died at the scene after being struck by a westbound car about 10.55pm on Saturday. The driver of the car, a woman in her 40s, is assisting police with their inquiries.

Altona land rates refund call By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council is being urged to refund rates to owners of dormant land in Altona following the Victorian Ombudsman’s call for owners of land that can’t be developed along Gippsland’s Ninety Mile Beach to be reimbursed. Ombudsman Deborah Glass last week recommended Ninety Mile Beach landowners be refunded rates and waste charges and their land be compulsorily acquired if it couldn’t be developed.

Landowners on Altona’s Burns Road Industrial Estate have been sitting on land that has remained undeveloped for about a century. The land was subdivided in the 1920s into 505 lots, mostly measuring about 600 square metres. Originally zoned residential, the estate was deemed too close to petrochemical industries and subsequently rezoned. It is currently zoned special use and owners are charged rates for industrial land, which must be at least two hectares to be developed. The estate contains enviromentally significant

flora and fauna that requires permission to remove. Landowner Michael Sergi, who recently sold the only two-hectare lot on the estate with a permit for warehousing but still owns smaller lots, said the council should refund rates. “What the council should be doing at this stage is to reimburse everyone … because they shouldn’t have been allowed to charge rates on that land,” Mr Sergi said. A council spokesman said achieving agreement between landowners was the biggest impediment to developing the land.

“Over the past five years, council have made significant investments to assist landowners in resolving the complex issues with the estate,” he said. “Significant project milestones have been achieved since, including the establishment of the Burns Road Landowner Group Inc.” Consultant Gerard Coutts, whose firm was engaged by the council in 2014 to work with landowners, said the group membership of about 50 owners held more than half of the parcels on the estate. “Ultimately, it would make sense that people work together to develop,” he said.

Safety fears at Braybrook site

By Benjamin Millar The heavy health cost and devastating environmental toll of last year’s toxic Tottenham warehouse fire have been laid out in Parliament as part of an inquiry into Victoria’s management of recycling and waste. Representatives of the Anti-Toxic Waste Alliance and Friends of Stony Creek appeared before the legislative council environment and planning committee last Tuesday to detail the lasting impacts of the fire. They called for an overhaul of the way in which toxic waste is managed to avoid future catastrophic events. Alliance chair Sue Vittori told the hearing it was time the community’s voice was heard loud and clear. “We trust this time the community’s concerns are actually being heard and will be acted on, rather than falling on deaf ears, which has happened so often in the past,” she said. “Members are feeling angry and fearful. We don’t feel safe in our suburbs any more – we feel betrayed and ignored by our political leaders.” Ms Vittori recounted her experience on the day of the August 30 fire, waking to the sound of explosions and watching a black plume of smoke billow over her Yarraville home. “I witnessed our creek being turned into a cocktail of chemicals that day,” she said. “For months, the smell would come back and re-traumatise our residents.” Ms Vittori said decades of under-funding and ineffective legislation had left the Environment Protection Authority ill-equipped to handle the fight against toxic waste being illegally stockpiled. “The law is worthless if it’s not being properly enforced,” she said. “The EPA has been missing for years.”

exposed the community to harmful chemicals and increased anxiety and depressive symptoms that contributed to more serious health problems. The inquiry is due to release an interim report on August 29.

Illegal stockpiles of recycling waste remain piled high in a Braybrook warehouse situated within 100 metres of residential properties, months after coming to the attention of authorities. Sources familiar with the property fear the stockpiles pose a significant safety risk to nearby residents unless urgent action is taken to deal with the mountains of waste, left in limbo as Victoria’s recycling industry reaches crisis point. The large warehouse at 81-85 Ashley Street was formerly operated by TIC group, but is under new ownership. Maribyrnong planning services director Nigel Higgins said the council had been aware since March that the site was being used for stockpiling waste without the necessary permit required in this location. “Investigations and actions are under way to ensure compliance with all planning requirements,” he said. “We have monitored the site with the municipal building surveyor visiting the site in March and May to investigate essential building safety measures.” EPA chief executive Cathy Wilkinson said inspections of sites and their activities were prioritised according to the level of risk and stockpiling. Recycling update Council has implemented interim recyclables drop offs for Hobsons Bay residents weekly on Saturdays between 8am and 2pm at the Hobsons Bay City Council Operations Centre, Sugar Gum Drive in Altona.

Most household recyclable material will be accepted. Residents are asked to pre-sort and separate their recyclables into two skip bins: 1. Glass and 2. Paper / plastic / cans. Recyclables that will be accepted in the paper/ plastic / cans bin include plastics such as PET soft drink bottles, milk bottles, shampoo bottles, detergent bottles; paper and cardboard such as magazines, newspapers and cardboard; and cans including aluminium and steel. The interim drop offs follow the temporary closure of Council’s recycling contractors SKM, which has resulted in Council’s collected recycling unfortunately going to landfill. Council is currently working hard on long term solutions and will keep the community informed as these progress.

Simmons visit a big hit By Benjamin Millar Young basketball players were treated to a surprise masterclass by one of Australia’s biggest global sports stars when Ben Simmons dropped into Footscray on an unannounced visit to the Helping Hoops Future program. Simmons, 23, rocketed to basketball stardom after signing with the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA. Helping Hoops executive director Adam McKay said Simmons and his family had been big supporters of Helping Hoops for the past three years. “Ben visited our Helping Hoops Future program, run in Footscray every Wednesday for young people from a migrant and refugee background, to join in and have a run with the crew,” he said. “Ben famously threw down some dunks, some of which have gone viral, but more importantly talked to the group about his journey and what it takes to succeed at the highest level.” Mr McKay said that while the visit was a lot of fun for the young people, there was a deeper take-away message – that challenges can be overcome by hard work and discipline. “All our kids face challenges … to be inspired to push through these challenges from someone they idolise is a powerful thing,” he said. Simmons, who is back in Australia for training with the national Boomers squad and to host basketball camps for juniors, made waves last week by posting a video to his Instagram page implying Crown Casino had denied he and some friends entry due to racial profiling. True blue Blues festival A day-long blues music festival will be held at Newport’s Substation next month. Newport Folk Club’s Tues Blues group is hosting the West of the Blues fest, headlined by Phil Manning and featuring eight musicians and bands from the west. The budding writers produced a book called Sailing in the Sky about a lone Aussie sailor who finds himself trapped in a ghost town. Caroline Chisholm Catholic College students have worked against the clock to create a story book. A team of years 7 to 12 students earlier this month had 12 hours to write and illustrate a book aimed at children in hospitals across Australia as part of the Write a Book in a Day initiative for The Kids Cancer Project. Thief takes wine, leaves nappies By Benjamin Millar Police are hunting for a burglar who made off with an estimated $10,000 of wine belonging to a high-end Yarraville restaurant. About 260 bottles of wine were stolen from the storeroom beneath Navi restaurant on Gamon Street about 5am on July 5, along with thousands of dollars of items from other occupants of the building. Two bags of nappies were left behind in their place.

Navi owner and chef Julian Hills said the burglar returned about 10am and tried to break into the restaurant, triggering an alarm that alerted police who were underneath the restaurant investigating the earlier theft.

“I know there are people in the building who lost as much as we did, so I just want the police to catch them for those people.” A Victoria Police spokeswoman said detectives are investigating the burglary. She said the offender left the scene in a black sedan. “Detectives are keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone that may have seen any suspicious activity in the area at the time,” she said. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

“It was a pretty horrible week, it has occupied my time and mental space badly, but we have been able to re-source everything – everyone has been really helpful,” Mr Hills said. “We have now just got wine all across the restaurant because we’re worried about putting it back downstairs.” Mr Hills said the burglar also made off with hard drives containing CCTV footage, but was caught on other CCTV as he attempted to break into the restaurant.

Toxic tunnel soil fears Workers and the public are facing unacceptable health and safety risks from toxic substances unearthed during work for the West Gate Tunnel, according to the union representing many of the workers on the project. Tests on soil excavated from tunnel work sites, particularly those around Coode Island, have shown contamination with PFAS, a dangerous chemical substance associated with cancer clusters at the CFA’s Fiskville site, according to results seen by Star Weekly Weekly. Tunnel authorities say proper safety procedures are in place to protect the public and workers, but the CFMEU says hundreds of tonnes of the soil stockpiled alongside Footscray Road for weeks posed a health risk yet were only moved after pressure was applied. Union spokesman Jack Kerr said contractor CPB John Holland Joint Venture had been lax with regard to its management of contaminated soils and also left soil with asbestos in it exposed near residential properties in South Kingsville last week.

The CFMEU has launched a series of mobile billboards and a dedicated “toxic tunnel” webpage outlining its concerns. CPB John Holland referred Star Weekly’s request for comment to the West Gate Tunnel Authority. A WGTA spokeswoman confirmed that low levels of PFAS and small amounts of asbestos had been identified in soil being dug up in former industrial areas, but said all contaminated materials were being appropriately managed. “Finding contaminated soil is part and parcel of construction in urban areas, especially in former industrial areas,” she said. “The construction contractor CPB John Holland Joint Venture has been in ongoing contact with the EPA and WorkSafe to ensure the contaminated soil is being handled appropriately and measures are put in place to protect the workforce and the community.”

Statue walks again A 1.2 metre-high statue stolen from Laverton early last year has been recreated and installed at a different location. Dean Bowen was commissioned by Hobsons Bay council in 2010 to sculpt the piece titled Walking Figure. The bronze statue, part of a set of three called Linking Laverton, was cut off from its stone base at the Thomas Street entry to McCormack Park. A new Walking Figure has been installed at the highly visible corner of Maher Road and Bladin Street in Laverton. Bowen’s new sculpture was cast from the original mould in bronze. The sculptor, who was emotional at the time of the theft, declined to comment on the installation of the recreated statue. At the time of the theft, he described it as “an attack on the community”. Following the theft, more statues were stolen in Hobsons Bay. Last August, the theft of two statues from Altona pier shocked the community. They were part of a set of five bronze statues by sculptor Pauline Fraser depicting marine creatures that are part of the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail. In October, Requiem for a Champion, installed at the site of the former Williamstown Racecourse in the Altona Coastal Park, was noticed missing.

Hobsons Bay council wants differences resolved between The Substation management and disgruntled community members. The Newport arts space is owned by VicTrack and leased to an incorporated not-for-profit association with a committee of management. A community meeting was last week called by Darren Williams, who has started a website called Save Our Substation and a petition to be presented to the council. Mr Williams, who was the founder and president for 16 years of the Newport Substation restoration and redevelopment project, is calling on the council to withhold future funding to The Substation unless there is an open community membership structure. “The fact that Hobsons Bay City Council is funding a closed, non-elected small group of people accountable to no one is very concerning for all our community,” Mr Williams said. The Substation president Amber Stuart said the association had always acted in accordance with its rules and the law. “Since 2016, 50 community groups have accessed the space for free and of the almost 500 artists who have developed, created and presented art in our program since 2016, none of them have ever been charged a fee. Since 2016, we have welcomed 250,000 visitors to The Substation and in 2018, attendees to our program generated a further $4.9 million of economic impact to our local area.” In 2016, the council voted to allocate $1,050,000 over three years to The Substation. A council spokesperson said the next funding agreement was under consideration. “Council would like to see both parties resolve their differences to ensure the best future for The Substation.”

Spotlight on worker safety By Alesha Capone A retailer has been fined $150,000 without conviction after a truck driver’s foot was crushed when his leg was run over twice at a Laverton North workplace. Spotlight Pty Ltd pleaded guilty in the Werribee Magistrates Court earlier this month to failing to ensure that the workplace and the means of entering and leaving it were safe. The court heard that the incident occurred as the driver walked along a marked pedestrian area at the company’s distribution centre in Laverton North.

The man was returning to his truck while a shipping container was being unloaded from it by a mobile straddle carrier. As the carrier moved forward, it struck the driver and its front wheel ran over his leg. A Spotlight employee saw the driver was trapped and signalled to the carrier operator, who reversed the transporter back over the driver’s leg. The driver’s left knee was dislocated, his ankle broken and his foot crushed in the incident. His toe was amputated as a result. since the incident, including marking out designated loading zones, pedestrian exclusion zones, driver safety zones and re-marking the pedestrian path. The court heard the company also decommissioned the carrier and now employs a security officer at the entry point to the loading area, to direct truck drivers when they arrive.

WorkSafe’s executive director of health and safety Julie Nielsen described the Laverton North incident as “a terrible example of what can happen when mobile machinery and pedestrian workers mix”. “Unfortunately it is not an isolated example, and there have been many incidents involving machinery and pedestrians where workers have been seriously injured or even killed,” she said. “All employers must ensure machinery and pedestrians are adequately separated and that systems and processes are in place to protect workers at all sites.”

Strings attached Melodies composed by Handel, Bach, Vivaldi and Brahms will be among the musical pieces performed at the upcoming String Festival at Westbourne Grammar School in Truganina. More than 100 students will take part in the annual school event later this month. Ensembles involved in the show include the school’s Senior Orchestra, Senior String Orchestra, Junior String Orchestra, Year 4 String Ensemble, Year 7 String Classes, Year 8 String Classes, Year 8 String Quintet, Year 11 Piano Trio and Cello Ensemble. Students will also perform musical pieces with such varied names as Rumba Time, Sea Fever Silver Forest and House of Smashed Fever, Avocado. The string festival is part of a packed musical timetable for Westbourne pupils this term. On Monday, August 26 pupils will take part in the Victorian School Music Festival there are

also chapel recitals, a choral festival, a house singing competition, VCE solo and group performances and the school musical, Seussical Jr: The Musical, during this school term. Victory makes its soccer pitch By Benjamin Millar Melbourne Victory football club has emerged from the background to publicly press its case for a proposed soccer academy at Footscray Park. Hundreds of Maribyrnong residents have lodged objections to the club’s plans to build three new floodlit pitches in the park, along with changerooms and undercover stadium seating for 600 spectators, in exchange for a 21-year lease. The club on Monday released a video

extolling the virtues of the project, promising it would provide a boost to junior and women’s soccer and “breathe new life into Footscray Park”. Club chief executive Trent Jacobs told a public meeting held at Victoria University last Wednesday that the proposal would benefit the Maribyrnong community and the wider western suburbs. Mr Jacobs told Star Weekly the club wanted the project to be viewed holistically as a community facility as well as sporting academy. “We believe this site and this opportunity

is going to bring so much for so many diverse parts of the community,” he said. Mr Jacobs said the site was chosen due to its proximity to the club’s headquarters at AAMI Park and to Victoria University and other community partners. He said the club opened dialogue with Maribyrnong council after the club sought expressions of interest in 2015. “We then commenced a feasibility study on trying to understand whether or not the site was going to be suitable,” he said. An online petition opposing the project has attracted close to 4800 signatures.

Opponents have raised concerns about the loss of public open space and potential issues with floodplain management, calling on the council to fund an upgrade of the park and keep it public. Mr Jacobs said the community would maintain access to the pitches around the club’s requirements, which would vary across the year, and that Melbourne Water had provided in-principle support subject to further detail. Maribyrnong council is scheduled to vote on the Melbourne Victory proposal on August 27.

Author illustrates a point One of Australia’s much-loved creators of children’s books, Michael Salmon, last week dropped into Altona Meadows Primary School. He hosted workshops in creative writing as part of the school’s celebration of Education Week. Salmon is known for ABC TV’s Alexander Bunyip show (from 1978-88) and writing and illustrating more than 170 books for young readers. Principal Bill Reid said the school’s 380 pupils enjoyed being shown how to illustrate and having themselves illustrated by Salmon. “All the children certainly enjoyed listening to him and seeing him do the different illustrations of different children in their groups,” Ms Reid said. “We’ve got his posters up on display around the main office. “He had two one-hour sessions where he worked with big groups and talked about

tudents at Academy of Mary Immaculate use the city of Melbourne as their classroom during a creative, cross-curricular program. From walking The Black Mile along Gertrude Street and sampling indigenous food at Charcoal Lane, to learning about spirituality in pre-gold rush Melbourne, the Synergy program for year 9 students is a term of exploration. It has been offered at Academy of Mary Immaculate in Fitzroy for five years and is regarded as one of the highlights of the school’s education program. It spans the curriculum and embraces science, maths, English, the arts, history and geography. “The aim of Synergy is to enhance curiosity and to develop independent learners and students who think critically and creatively,” says Catherine Glenister, a Synergy learning leader. “It’s an integrated inquiry-based program that uses Melbourne as our classroom and we’ve found it to be a powerful way of teaching. It is a deep, rich experience for the girls.” The program has five units and a Tuning In week that allows teachers to get to know the students, introduces them to the city, and gives them a taste of what Melbourne and Synergy have to offer. A scavenger hunt and visits to Melbourne Museum and the State Library are part of the orientation. “Being in Fitzroy, we are perfectly placed for a city-experience program,” says Glenister. “The students begin to think about where Melbourne fits internationally and they look at our historic links with other places. We look beyond the walls of Academy and look at

Melbourne through a variety of lenses.” Synergy units cover the First Peoples of Melbourne, including their experiences through the centuries and the impact of settlement and colonisation. The Spiritual City unit looks at the development of the Anglican and Catholic churches in Melbourne, the differences between the religions and significant religious figures. Visits to St James Cathedral, St Frances Church and an exploration of the architecture and history of St Patrick’s Cathedral are part of

the experience. Top tips to help renters feel more at home Despite tenure uncertainty, there are some cheap and effective strategies tenants can use to create a sense of home in a temporary space. One of the first mistakes is choosing furniture to fill a specific spot in your rental property. “Buy furniture items that you love, that you can move around with you, that work with different spaces,” is the first piece of advice from Julianne Bull from The Den Interiors. Bull identified sofas as common culprits. “A lot of the trendy ones are low and have a wide profile,” she says, which made them difficult to move and place in smaller rooms. She says renters should find out if they can hang artwork, as it adds a personal stamp. If not, oversized artworks can be leaned against a wall. “Leaning, rather than hanging, gives a contemporary edge.” Ms Bull said rugs were ideal for disguising a rental’s less appealing features. “Even with really ugly carpet, you can still lay a rug over it,” she explains. “It gives a focal point to the room. We are delighted to see the sort of Afghan food hitherto available in Sunshine and Footscray make its way to Werribee. Lux is a lovely set-up – the dining room sparkles with welcome, the menu covers all the bases (including going beyond charcoal-grilled meats), the prices are almost absurdly low. And the food is grand – so much so the very minor hiccups noted below barely register as any sort of speed bump. Barley chicken soup ($7) is just as homely and satisfying as it looks. It is, though, very plain of flavour – if you’re like us, you’ll be reaching for the salt shaker. Mantu ($13) are superb. The delicate dumplings are festooned with two complementary sauces – a mincey/lentil number and one of minty yoghurt. It’s taken us several years to fully get with the swing of the Afghan take on stews/curries. But now we’re fully there, happily appreciating them in their own right. Lamb qorma ($12) is a doozy – both runny and rich, with plentiful tender meat that falls away from the bones with ease. CTS knows that all of the above food is pre-prepared, so happily accept some reheating is the order of the day. However the soup and mantu are barely warm enough, the qorma not so – it is returned to the kitchen for a blast. Our qorma arrives without rice, so we have to order that extra – and it’s very good. SPORT No magic left as Altona looks to build for next season

Altona Magic finds itself in an unfamiliar position of having dead rubber matches to round out the National Premier League soccer season. In recent years, the Magic has been involved in enthralling chases for titles and promotions, but with two rounds to go this season, it is all a little bit boring. Magic coach Goran Lozanovski concedes it has been a bit harder for the team to find motivation since their finals hopes ended and their survival in the league was confirmed. Even a game against his former club South Melbourne is not measuring too high on Lozanovski’s excitement scale. “It’s a hard one to get motivated for to be honest,” he said. “If we were playing against a team that was fighting for the top six or in the top six, the

players would’ve been happy to go out there and try to upset them. “Unfortunately, right now, the South game is a dead rubber for us and them. “It’s always a great challenge to play South, but unfortunately when there’s nothing to play for, it’s a bit hard to get up for that game.” With neither side having plenty to gain or lose, Lozanovski predicts it could be an open game that promotes attacking play against South Melbourne. The other aspect of interest could be seeing which youngsters step up. “You might get a few young boys playing and showing if they’re worthy of playing senior football next year,” Lozanovski said. “I’m sure South will probably be doing the same thing, blooding the young boys.” Lozanovski is deflated by the way Altona’s

first season in the top flight has panned out. The Magic showed their best is good enough to match it with the contenders, but they were far too inconsistent to crack into the top six. What did not help the Magic’s cause was the injury list that seemed to grow by the week. “When you’ve had the season that we’ve had with the roster and the ins and outs, the inconsistency with our starting XI, it shows on the field,” he said. “We’re doing our best, but unfortunately it’s just not good enough. It shows why we are where we are on the table.” The positive for Altona, currently in 10th spot, is that it managed to keep hold of its NPL spot. Young Dog makes an impact By Lance Jenkinson Young Western Bulldogs onballer Callum Porter has taken a giant leap forward with his development as a player in the second half of this season. The 20-year-old, in his second year with the Bulldogs since being selected with pick 74 in the 2017 AFL National Draft, produced arguably his best game of the year in Footscray’s 93-point win over Essendon in the VFL at VU Whitten Oval on Saturday. Porter was a ball magnet in the centre, racking up 35 disposals, many claimed with his bull-at-a-gate style, seeing him emerge with the ball from heavy traffic. It was the latest in a string of impressive performances from Porter that have put the Bulldogs AFL selectors on alert. The Gippsland Power product has been named an emergency in recent weeks, suggesting there is thought to rewarding his strong VFL play with an AFL debut. But Porter will continue to control what he can control and let the selectors do their job. “I have been emergency a few times, which is a good position to be in,” Porter said. “You’re getting spoken about and not too far away. “But regardless of where I play, whether it’s VFL or AFL, the process for me doesn’t change. “I’m just focusing on enjoying playing footy, trying to get a win for the team, work hard and enjoy the game.” What has become apparent is the growing ruck-onballer partnership Porter is building with young Bulldogs ruckman Jordon Sweet. Sweet had a massive 50 hit-outs, many palmed into the direction of a grateful Porter. “Me and Jordon have been working together all year,” Porter said. “That chemistry is always getting better. “I think this was one of our best performances for the year for both of us. “He definitely makes us midfielders look good with the work that he does and the dominance that he gets at the stoppage.” There was so much impressive young talent on show for Footscray in the VFL, which is only going to strengthen the Western Bulldogs AFL team in the coming years. Rhylee West, who kicked four goals as a midfielder-forward, took his game up another level to be a dominant force. Lewis Young was incredible defensively, commanding the air with 15 marks and working in a quarterback-style role to set up play with 23 disposals. Bulldogs bask in big three-peat

Callum Porter has been crucial in the midfield for the premiership-contending Footscray in the VFL.

Not in the wildest dreams of the most ardent Western Bulldogs fan did they believe Saturday’s total wipeout of Essendon would be possible. In three games between the two clubs on the day, the Bulldogs not only went 3-0, but they came away with an incredible score differential of plus-241 across the three games. It was raining goals for the red, white and blue from 1pm until about 10.30pm. Footscray kick-started the day with a 93-point win over Essendon in the VFL at the VU Whitten Oval, before the Western Bulldogs VFLW team kept Essendon goalless in a 44-point win. In the AFL later that night, the Western Bulldogs kicked a jaw-dropping 21 unanswered goals during a 104-point trouncing of Essendon at Marvel Stadium. Young Bulldogs onballer Callum Porter, who featured in Footscray’s win over Essendon in the VFL, was a bit shocked by the severity of the victories, particularly in the AFL game. “It’s pretty rare that teams win by over 100 points, especially in the modern game, because teams are so evenly poised,” he said. “To beat any team is a good result, let alone by over 100 points.”

Promising season turns sour as Falcons fail in finals City West Falcons have flunked the finals test in the Victorian Netball League championship division. The Falcons were the finals favourite after a wonderful 17-1 regular season, but it all turned pear-shaped once August arrived. Falcons coach Marg Lind was deflated for her team after the straight sets finals exit was confirmed in a heavy 65-46 preliminary final loss to Casey Demons at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. “I know the girls are disappointed,” Lind said. “We thought we were one of the standout teams for the year and we had such a good year. “We just had a horrible day.” After starting the season with 15 straight wins, the tide took a turn for the worse for City West Falcons when the world championships took place. The Falcons had three players, Tharjini Sivalingam, Soli Ropati and Tee Salanoa, involved and it caused disruption to the back end of their season.

“It’s great that we had three players at world championships and it’s amazing for our club, but it was also tough because they were unable to come back into the team and retain the form they left with and we couldn’t get the momentum back as a group,” Lind said. “Having Soli, Tee and Jini out and having to re-jig the group and then having to re-jig them again before finals, it was just too disruptive. “We were unable to repeat the cohesiveness that had been so good all year.” With City West’s team cohesion already out of whack, illness and injury in the finals did not help their cause. In the double overtime semi-final defeat to Geelong Cougars, youngster Anger Agek succumbed to illness and star mid-courter Molly Jovic suffered a foot injury. Jovic tried to play through her injury in the loss to Casey, but pulled out of the game early because her foot was in too much pain. Jovic’s replacement Ropati was under the weather too having suffered with gastro, so her impact was severely limited.

No matter what Lind and the coaches did to move players to plug the gaps against Casey, they just never seemed to work and only opened up more problems. It ended up turning into a rout with Casey doing as it pleased to a broken Falcons in the second half. “We re-jigged the line-up to try to get a bit of spark, but no matter what we did, we went a couple of goals backwards each time we made subs,” Lind said. “That amounted to a big scoreline in the end.” Lind concedes that Jovic should not have played, but she was full of admiration for her playmaking centre. “She gave us as much as she could’ve given with where she was at and she’s been great all year.” The grand final will be contested between Geelong Cougars and Casey Demons on Wednesday night. CYs coach Mathew Montebello was thrilled to claim a 15th straight win and lock up the No.1 finals ranking – with a caveat. “You sort of don’t start off the year wanting to finish on top,” he said. “When it’s there, you want to show everyone how serious you are and take it. “We’ll enjoy the moment, but at the end of the day it doesn’t mean anything unless you’re holding up the cup at the end of the year.” It will be the second time in as many seasons that Williamstown CYMS will head into the finals as minor premier. Last season, that counted for nought, as CYs were bundled out of the finals in straight sets

with two heartbreaking losses of less than a kick. Montebello is imploring his players to take the minor premiership in their stride. “When you’re at where we’re at, it’s very easy to tighten up,” Montebello said. “We’re just trying to embrace the challenge that we have ahead. We see each week as another opportunity for this group to play together.” Williamstown CYMS knows all too well that finals are a different ball game. The experience of last year’s pain offers a constant reminder of how fleeting form can be. It is likely CYs and Ormond will cross paths at some point in September – and Montebello will be planning for a much different challenge. “Yes, it was great to beat them, it was fantastic,” he said. “But we know they’ll go away and re-think that and come back at us differently next time.” As for the here and now, Saturday’s win was one to savour. The CYs domination started in the centre, with Tom Johnstone, Russell Ackerly and Brad Tucker the ball magnets. Nathan Malkoun’s run-with role was crucial,

while Damon Tucker excelled both off a half-back flank and in the guts. Lachlan Fairley was the standout in attack with four goals. Fairley’s influence is much bigger than what he provides on the scoresheet. “The opposition just has to worry about him,” Montebello said. “He allows other blokes to be freed up because teams become so conscious of him.” Williamstown CYMS ruck tandem Dylan Jones and Nick Blackney not only controlled the air, but also managed to squeeze the best out of each other with a friendly rivalry. Montebello says there is a similar dynamic across the group – and that will be important in the finals. “The way they work together and sort of have a crack at each other about trying to out-do each other is really good,” he said. “We’ve got to stay in that head space … the moment we drop out of that head space, we could be vulnerable.” Williamstown CYMS will travel to Chelsworth Park on Saturday to face third-placed Old Ivanhoe Grammarians.

Altona sewed up the Western Region Football League division 1 minor premiership with a resounding 91-point win over Sunshine Kangaroos at JK Grant Reserve on Saturday. After a competitive start to the game, the Vikings gradually pulled away from the Kangaroos to record a comfortable win. Patrick Rose and Mitch Turnbull were potent in attack for the Vikings with four goals apiece. Thomas Mundy capped a best-on-ground performance with three goals. The Vikings are three games and percentage clear on top and will head into the finals as favourites to break Deer Park’s run of six consecutive premierships. Spotswood remains in second place, but only just, after an eight-point loss to third-placed Deer Park. The Woodsmen led by seven points at half-time, but could not sustain their momentum. With games against low-ranked Point Cook and Caroline Springs to come, Spotswood should be able to hold on to second spot. In division 2, Newport was all but eliminated from the finals race with a shock 22-point loss to West Footscray. North Footscray ended a six-game losing streak with a 10-point win over Parkside. Yarraville-Seddon was made to work hard for a 22-point victory away to Point Cook Centrals. In division 3, Laverton showed plenty of spirit before it was out-classed by 24 points at home to Tarneit.
