Tiny homes, big deal By Benjamin Millar The first tenants in a groundbreaking “tiny home” pilot program to help tackle homelessness have praised the project for providing a sense of safety and belonging. Launch Housing unveiled the first phase of its $9 million Harris Transportable Housing Project on Monday, officially launching the first six of 57 “tiny homes” built on nine VicRoads reserves along Ballarat Road in Footscray and Maidstone. Deborah, the first tenant placed in one of the properties – along with her dog, Zeus – said her life had been drastically changed since she secured the house. “I have noticed changes in how I view the world and dreams and aspirations are now possible,” she said. “Slowly, a day at a time, I’m building a new life. I am slowly integrating back into society.” Deborah said it was the first safe, stable home she has had since becoming homeless at the age of 13 when her father shot her mother dead then turned the gun on himself. “I battled drug and alcohol dependency from a young age,” she said. “These units are perfect for people who have battled with so many issues, such as myself.” Deborah said Zeus loved sunning himself on the front porch and she had forged friendships with her fellow neighbours. “My garden out front is my favourite space,” she said. “I love that I can have a garden and have stability, that my garden can grow and I can watch my flowers bloom.” The project is a partnership between Launch Housing and philanthropists Geoff and Brad Harris, who chipped in $4 million, along with the state government’s Victorian Property Fund. Launch Housing chief executive Bevan Warner said the project could be rolled out across Victoria after the success of the early homes. But he warned the homeless challenge remained daunting, with almost 25,000 people in Victoria being without a home on any given night, including about 1700 people sleeping rough. “Let’s be clear, homelessness is getting worse, not better,” he said. “Many people receive no practical help at all … there are not enough beds and not enough homes.” Mr Warner said 195 hectares of government land sitting empty across Melbourne could host more than enough relocatable homes to end rough sleeping. enough country to provide education, healthcare and housing to all Australians, but it had dropped the ball on basic housing. “We decided to donate $4 million, which is the cost of the actual building of the first 57 units,” he said. “What struck me is they are just normal Australians, who have had their challenges. When Deborah showed me through her home on the first night that I was here, there was a sense of pride and belonging and I was very emotional hearing her say that.”

Footscray Park is a much loved community space and the Footscray Park Masterplan (2011) has guided improvements and developments across the park. We understand that the recent proposed Masterplan, in particular the inclusion of development of the area by Melbourne Victory, has sparked community concerns. Council has not made any decision and has not approved any development. The updated Masterplan unlocks the sites’ potential and has the capacity to strengthen the sporting landscape with the suggested inclusion of the Melbourne Victory Football Academy. The Masterplan is about developing and sharing the park to benefit as many possible users.

Key changes to the revised plan include: • a Melbourne Victory Football Club female and junior football academy incorporating 3 playing fields • enhanced interpretation and park interactivity including free public Wi-Fi • increased landscaping and continued boulevard planting along Ballarat Road • new walking paths around the playing fields and Henry Turner South oval • an improved car park at the eastern end along Ballarat Road Footscray Park will continue to be the premier site for Council’s festival/celebrations program ensuring the New Year’s Eve celebrations and other community festivals continue to operate from the park. We appreciate the level of community input to date, and submissions relating to the proposal will continue to be received up until close of business Friday 16 August, 2019.

Soccer bid security stepped up By Benjamin Millar The stoush over Melbourne Victory’s proposed soccer academy at Footscray Park has triggered a security crackdown at Maribyrnong council meetings that includes bag searches, ID checks and a heavy police presence. Members of the public seeking to attend last week’s council meetings were forced to submit to a bag search, show photo identification, have their names and addresses recorded and wear a wristband before being granted entry. More than a dozen Victoria Police officers

were stationed outside the council offices, inside the office and in the meeting room, along with security officers working for the council. Attendance at Wednesday night’s ordinary meeting was capped at 75 people in the public gallery and protest placards were banned from the building. The stricter conditions follow the cancelling of the previous week’s ordinary meeting after Victoria Police’s public order response unit evacuated more than 100 people from the building following a fire alarm. Those ordered from the council office foyer

had earlier been involved in a protest on the town hall steps against Melbourne Victory’s plans to build a soccer academy on public land in Footscray Park. The stricter security steps are the most stringent since 2015, when changes were introduced after two councillors were assaulted during a fiery meeting over paid parking in Yarraville village. Attendees at last Wednesday night’s meeting spoke out against the heavy police presence and requirement to show identification. Maribyrnong chief executive Stephen Wall

defended the arrangements, saying Victoria Police had made recommendations concerning the conduct of upcoming meetings and decided to deploy its officers at the meetings. “The banning of placards and signs is to not only ensure a safe working environment for staff and councillors, but also the safety of those in the gallery,” he said. Footscray police Acting Senior Sergeant Travis Costelow said police conducted ongoing risk assessments in relation to public events and used various forms of intelligence to determine a planned response.

Boat ramp fees given the boot Fishers have welcomed the abolition of boat ramp fees across Hobsons Bay. Election promises by both major parties to abolish boat ramp fees and return all licensing and registration revenue to the industry have now come into effect at some of the state’s boat ramps. Annual permits had cost up to $315 at Altona and Newport, but are now free. According to the council, parking limits at the boat ramps is 24 hours. Premier Daniel Andrews and Fishing and Boating Minister Jaala Pulford on Sunday visited the Warmies boat ramp at Newport to announce that parking and launching at boat ramps across Hobsons Bay were now free. “These fees cost Victorian families hundreds of dollars a year; we said we’d abolish them and we’re delivering,” Mr Andrews said. “Free public boat ramps will make it cheaper and easier to get out on the water and enjoy everything our bays, lakes and rivers have to offer.” Hillside fisher Albert Nuzzo, who was fined about $67 for parking without paying at Newport boat ramp in April, welcomed the abolition of fees. “I just want equality across the board,” he said. “In the whole of Australia, no one else has to pay fees. I can’t understand why it’s taken so long.” The state government is working with Wyndham council “about arrangements to remove fees”.

New book a cut above An award-winning TV writer has published his first book after his children kept asking what happened to his hair. Newport’s Trent Roberts came up with an answer that forms the title of his book: A Dinosaur Ate Dad’s Hair. Yes, that’s right – a Ty-eat-your-hair-us Rex ate “bald dad’s” hair. Roberts has been a TV writer for 15 years, including writing three episodes of the award-winning ABC ME series, Little Lunch. “I was mainly doing adult drama and comedy, and then about five years ago I was writing for a show called Upper Middle Bogan on the ABC,” he said. “The creators of that then went on to make a show called Little Lunch, which was a really successful ABC kids’ show. “That led to other kids’ shows.” Roberts said he loved writing kids’ TV so much, it inspired him to write a children’s book. “I got the idea for A Dinosaur Ate Dad’s Hair because my kids, Gypsy and Felix, and their friends always ask me how I lost my hair and I make up silly stories to try and make them laugh,” he said. Roberts is currently writing a chapter book titled Stunt Kids for children aged eight to 12, to be published by Pan MacMillan. Hit-run sentence

A hit-run learner driver has walked free after leaving a two-year-old boy on the road at Laverton and driving on to get takeaway food. Zachery Davin Larkins, 22, was last week given a 12-month community corrections order in the Koori Court. Larkins had pleaded guilty to failing to stop and render assistance after hitting the boy in Railway Avenue last September.

Paper plan is on a roll Altona Primary School pupils have visited a Laverton North recycling plant to see their old textbooks and classroom paper waste converted to luxury toilet paper. The Encore Tissue factory converts paper waste into its icare toilet paper, which the students took back to the school for use in their bathrooms. Principal Natalie Nelson said the children loved seeing the recycling process go full circle. “They really care about where things come from and where the rubbish goes,” she said. The three-generation family-run recycling company has been recycling Melbourne’s paper waste into toilet paper and paper towels for more than 30 years.

Luke Peters, chief executive of icare, said almost 100 per cent of paper collected by the company was recycled and it produced the only three-ply toilet paper from totally recycled paper. “We know that more Melburnians are actively trying to successfully implement eco-friendly choices,” he said. The school visit comes as Victorians are being urged to keep up their recycling efforts amid the collapse of kerbside collections for dozens of councils, including Hobsons Bay. A Maidstone couple has escaped without injury after their home was peppered with gunshots on Sunday night. The man and woman were asleep inside their Yellow Box Street home when they were woken by the sound of gunfire as a number of shots were fired into their house about 11.35pm.

An Altona North man was “30 seconds from death” when a fortunate set of circumstances saved him after he collapsed from a heart attack at Bunnings. A grateful Bill Brown last week returned to the store to thank the workers who saved his life, but he has one regret – that his beloved Collingwood Football Club jacket had to be cut from his body by paramedics. Mr Brown, 86, went to the Altona North Bunnings last month to buy wall brackets and was leaving the store with his beloved dog, Sally, when he felt faint. “I thought, I’m gonna fall down, but don’t fall down yet, the car’s only another 10 yards away,” he said. “And all of a sudden I fell down.” He handed his phone to Carolina Cornejo, from Officeworks, who was on her way to get a coffee at the Altona North retail hub. “I pushed the button to Julie [his daughter] and that’s the last thing I remember,” Mr Brown said. “And the next thing I remember after that was seeing Julie in the crowd. “Somebody said, ‘What day is it?’ I said to them, ‘Wednesday, and I have to go to work’. “They said to me when I got to the hospital, ‘Thirty seconds more and you’d be dead’, because they put the jumpers on me and saved my life.” Bunnings worker Christine Dennis said she had been told a gentleman out the front had fallen. “I did notice his hand was cold and a bit blue and I asked him if he had diabetes or a heart condition,” she said. “I then said to one of the team members to get the defib because I knew it was his heart.”

Williamstown house prices rise By Goya Dmytryshchak Williamstown’s median house price recorded strong growth in the last quarter, according to Real Estate Institute of Victoria data. The suburb came in at No. 5 in Melbourne’s top-10 growth suburbs, with the median rising 8.4 per cent in the quarter to June 30, taking it to $1.26 million. REIV chief executive Gil King said Williamstown was the only western suburb to make the top-10 quarterly growth suburbs. “The median house price for inner

water, in close proximity to the city, with a growing culinary and entertainment scene that appeals to buyers, particularly families.” The median house price for middle Melbourne – 10-20 kilometres from the CBD – is sitting at under $900,000 for the first time in nearly three years. Greg Hocking Elly Partners director Wayne Elly said competition was fierce in an area such as Williamstown. “Because of the lack of stock on the marketplace, people are certainly buying again,” he said.

“So, there are transactions happening quite regularly and people are turning up to auctions and coming to inspections again but there’s just not a lot of quality stock out there and hence people are competing for the properties again. “There’s less on the market at this time than what there was over the last couple of years and that’s hence going to force prices up. “Also, interest rates are going to stay stable or low. “The market’s good and people are starting to sell again and we’re seeing a rebound.”

The Footscray edge When self-described larrikin John Eastoe signed up for the latest season of Australian Survivor, it was, he says, a bit of a joke. John, 28, grew up in Footscray, a place still close to his heart despite recently heading to the mines of Kalgoorlie to find gold, adventure and himself. “It was more of a piss-take than anything – it was all just a joke with my mates,” he said. Yet the next thing he knew he was signed up and on a plane to Fiji, hurtled into the most gruelling physical and psychological challenges of his life. “I don’t know when it sank in,” he said. “It is the real McCoy – the mental games were really hard. And you’re just so hungry all the time.” John credits his experience of being raised by a single mum and his grandmother in Footscray with helping him handle the more psychologically testing challenges of the show. “I’m a pretty easy-going bloke – people would

work on all these strategies for the challenges but I just cruised on through and that worked well for me,” he said. The constant struggle against hunger, pain and exposure to the elements has opened his eyes to suffering in the world around him, giving him a new appreciation of what some people live through daily. “That’s probably the most profound effect it’s had on me – you just appreciate what you have more,” he said. With his wavy mullet flowing during an early nude romp down the beach, John has been dubbed the show’s unexpected sex symbol. “I just think it’s funny,” he said. “But as long as everybody can have a laugh at my expense, I’ve done my job.” Australian Survivor airs from 7.30pm Sunday to Tuesday on 10 and on demand via 10 Play. New project’s a bottler

Council tackles landfill waste

By Goya Dmytryshchak Williamstown High School students last week threw bottles into Kororoit Creek at Altona in an act of environmental consciousness. The school was participating in a “citizen science” project called Little Trackers. Each bottle is equipped with a GPS tracker and note warning people not to disturb the “property of RMIT” as it simulates where litter ends up once it enters drains, rivers and Port Phillip Bay. Project head, RMIT aquatic scientist Kavitha Chinathamby said people could see how fast litter travelled and how storm events influenced its movement. “From cigarette butts to plastic bottles, the litter we drop on the streets in our suburbs finds its way into our waterways and washes up on our beaches,” Dr Chinathamby said. “The Litter Trackers project gives all of Melbourne a chance to see the true scale of our litter problem and shows how we can all be part of the solution.” The first bottles were released into Elwood Canal and one of them washed up a week later on the Dromana foreshore 50 kilometres away. Maribyrnong council is embarking on an ambitious plan to end all locally generated waste going to landfill within the next 30 years. Almost 30,000 tonnes of waste is generated in Maribyrnong each year, about 20,000 tonnes of which is sent straight to landfill. A new waste strategy, tabled at last week’s council meeting, notes that “significant changes” have occurred in the waste, resource recovery and recycling industry since the council’s waste policy was adopted in 2014. “This is a rapidly changing space, and there is increasing community interest in the way that we manage waste as a city and respond to these challenges,” the strategy states. The council has developed what it considers to be “aspirational” targets to achieve a waste diversion rate of 60 per cent by 2030, moving toward zero waste going to landfill by 2050. The council has identified its own use of recycled materials as a key consideration in helping support a local recycling market in the wake of China’s ban on accepting recyclable waste from Australia. The policy involves maximising waste avoidance as a priority, followed by reuse, recycling and recovery, with disposal to landfill a last resort. Community feedback and input on the new strategy is being sought.

Dog attacks on the rise By Goya Dmytryshchak Dog owners in Hobsons Bay are being urged to do the right thing in the wake of increased reports of attacks. The council has launched a campaign promoting responsible pet ownership and will step up patrols by animal management officers. In a recent case, two dogs were attacked in separate incidents by the same off-lead dog in Williamstown on July 15. Authorities are still searching for the attacking dog, which has been described as large, black and tan and possibly a rottweiler breed. Both injured dogs needed veterinary treatment and one required surgery. There were 92 dog attacks investigated by the council in the year to June 30, compared with 64 in the previous financial year. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said dogs must be on a lead except in designated dog off-lead areas. Dog owners must maintain effective verbal control of and actively supervise their pets in off-lead areas, Cr Marsden said. “We have seen a number of incidences involving dog walkers in charge of multiple animals or owners who were checking their phones rather than actively watching their pets,” he said. “All dogs, regardless of their breed, must be properly socialised to ensure the safety of our community, and if your dog is not trained or socialised, then it is advised to keep them on a lead at all times, even in an off-lead area.” Star Weekly has reported on multiple dogs injured by other dogs at P.A. Burns Reserve, better known as Altona dog beach. Spot fines of up to $200 may be issued or fines of $1000 if the matter goes to court.

Footscray High makes a return Three decades after the name was seemingly consigned to history, the inner-west may once again have a Footscray High School. The original Footscray High, rebadged as Footscray/Yarraville Secondary College in 1990, was closed in 1996. Footscray High School has now been floated as the official umbrella name for the three high school campuses in the Footscray Learning Precinct. The new school – incorporating the current Footscray Secondary College, Gilmore Girls High School and a new junior campus being built in Seddon – will have two junior campuses (years 7-9) and one senior campus (years 10-12). Campuses are expected to be called the Barkly Street 7-9 Campus, Pilgrim Street 7-9 Campus and Kinnear Street Senior Campus. The school will be led by executive principal Frank Vetere, who has spent the past decade as assistant principal and then principal at Point Cook P-9 College. Barkly Street junior secondary campus (former Gilmore College for Girls) will open to co-ed junior students in 2020. Seddon junior secondary campus will open to co-ed junior students from 2021 and the Footscray City senior secondary campus will open to co-ed senior students from 2022. Twice as nice for twins Thomas and Christopher O’Reilly love being twins. The year 12 students are one of 17 sets of twins at Caroline Chisholm College. The Braybrook school marked National Twins Day last Thursday by organising a photo featuring all of the twins. Thomas, who came up with the idea, said he felt it was important to celebrate everything that was great about being a twin. “Twins have a special connection and we are not everywhere,” he said. “We always know when something is wrong

with the other. Sometimes we feel the same emotions. For example if we are in the same room and Christopher is feeling embarrassed then I will feel it too.” Christopher said the brothers were regularly asked if their family had trouble telling them apart. “Mum never mixes us up,” he said. West’s tree coverage on the rise By Ewen McRae Melton is leading the way in Melbourne in terms of increasing tree coverage, bucking a city-wide trend. A report from the Centre for Urban Research showed that Melbourne has lost almost 2000 hectares of tree cover in the past five years as suburban backyards are cleared for new housing. However the vast majority of the reductions occurred in the traditionally leafy suburbs, with Melton increasing its tree coverage by almost 2 per cent between 2018-19.

Whittlesea, Wyndham and Maribyrnong council areas were the next best, all increasing tree coverage by 1-2 per cent, with most of the improvements coming in public spaces. By comparison, Yarra Ranges Shire had a canopy decrease of almost 5 per cent. Eastern suburban Maroondah has shed more than

three percentage points of its canopy cover and Mornington Peninsula has also lost 3 per cent. While the numbers were improving, the report showed that Melton still had the lowest percentage of tree coverage in urbanised areas of all Melbourne councils. The report stated the improvement in tree canopy cover across the west was the result of council and environmental groups’ efforts. “The Western region has the lowest baseline tree cover, and is experiencing modest gains across residential land, parkland and streets,” the report stated. “The increase in parks and streets may reflect

the significant focus across the western suburbs on greening the public realm. “Planting trees has limited impact on vegetation cover in the short term but will have an increasingly significant impact as the trees mature.” The report concluded that development and homeowners’ decisions to clear or reduce the amount of greenery in their yards were playing a significant part in reducing Melbourne’s overall urban tree cover. with Adam Carey/The Age

Grin and beer it festival It’s time to schnapp out the lederhosen and dirndl costumes for the second Oktoberfest in the West. Seaworks at Williamstown will be transformed into a Munich-style beer hall inspired by the volksfest held annually in Bavaria, Germany. This year’s headliners will be legendary Aussie rock outfit Chocolate Starfish performing its INXS Kick show. Westbourne Grammar School’s 18-piece band will open the festival with traditional German songs and funky classics. Spotswood’s Two Birds Brewing will again create a special brew for the event after its kolsch-style beer last year proved to be a crowd-pleaser. Its new cider will also be on tap inside the Pirates Tavern, which will be transformed in to The Wunderbar. Event organiser Craig Turton said up to 3000 guests were expected.

“We’ve got about five imported beers from Germany, including one which is an Oktoberfest special which they brew for Oktoberfest in Germany,” Mr Turton said. “We’ve got a partnership this year with the German Club Tivoli in Melbourne – they’re coming along with their food and also their dancers, who are just phenomenal. “During the day, it’s going to be very German like a traditional Oktoberfest … as we get into the evening, it turns into more contemporary music with Chocolate Starfish finishing off the night with a bang.” Oktoberfest in the West will be on Saturday, October 5, from 2-9pm at Seaworks, 82 Nelson Place, Williamstown. Unit bid switched to townhouses By Benjamin Millar The owner of Footscray’s iconic 501 Receptions site has drastically scaled down plans for redevelopment, ditching plans to build almost 200 units in favour of 45 new townhouses. In 2016, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal gave the green light to a five-storey, 198-unit development on the 6288-square-metre site, which had been rezoned from industrial to mixed-use in 2009. The approved plans for 495-507 Barkly Street included twin five-storey blocks housing

104 one-bedroom and 94 two-bedroom units above eight retail ground-floor tenancies. The site was sold soon after the VCAT decision and the new owner has been in discussions with Maribyrnong council about embarking upon a three-storey townhouse project in place of the apartment plan. A new planning application has been submitted to the council, featuring 45 three-bedroom townhouses. A planning report notes that the apartment development initially planned for the site had not proved to be viable.

“This townhouse application is appropriate to this site location as an adjunct to the adjoining Banbury Village,” the report states. “The proposed development forms an exceptional design response for this site comprising of high-quality dwellings that are individually presented with a consistent treatment across the site. “The architectural response is well considered and appropriate to the site context and character of the area and this proposal is supported by State and Local Planning Policy.”

Saddle up for nature Cyclists and nature lovers are being invited to join Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden on a bike ride along the Newport and Williamstown coastline. The third mayoral ride, on Sunday, August 11, is a 13-kilometre, two-hour round trip with several stops on the way. It goes from Newport’s Greenwich Bay to Williamstown’s Jawbone Flora and Fauna Reserve and back again. Cr Marsden said the ride would take in Point Gellibrand and Rifle Range Reserve, with local environment groups talking about their work at various stops. “We will start the ride at the Sandy Point Nature Reserve where the Friends of Greenwich Bay will talk about their love for the area, including plantings and litter control, before heading south to Williamstown along the Bay Trail,” he said. “We then take a scenic ride along

Williamstown’s waterfront with its magnificent city views and historic buildings before taking a break at Shelly Beach with members of the Point Gellibrand Park Association. “Then, past the Williamstown Cricket Ground and Williamstown Beach, we will arrive at the Jawbone Flora and Fauna Reserve and Rifle Range Reserve, where the Jawbone Marine Sanctuary Care Group, Friends of Williamstown Wetlands and Parks Victoria will talk about the importance of the area, as well as the work they are currently doing to preserve and protect it.” Riders may choose to only do part of the ride. Well, I grew up in Williamstown/Newport, going to Williamstown Primary and then we moved to Altona when I was about 14. School and uni have been on the other side of town, but my part-time jobs and sport have all been local. What do you like about Altona? I’ve always liked how it’s like a small-town community. You pretty much know every face you see. Lots of open space, reserves and independent businesses. Everything feels genuine, charming and the people are all lovely. What don’t you like or what could be improved? I’ve always thought a local gastro pub would be a good addition to Pier Street. But the new Hopheads and Brew Works have been grouse alternatives.

My No.1 cafe is definitely the Birdcage. Great long blacks, the staff are incredible and they really hit the spot for post-morning training brunch. As for dinner, if we are in the mood for pizza we head to Pier 71. For a good pub meal, the Steam Packet is my go-to. Tell me about your involvement in hockey and Altona Hockey Club hosting its inaugural Pride Cup. I’ve always enjoyed helping out where I can around the hockey club. Over the last few

Kenny Weir is happy to find a Footscray institution back in business Cafe d’Afrique is renowned for being the first African coffee shop in Footscray. Proprietor Faisel Pkesy (pictured) reckons it’s also the first African business of any kind in this neighbourhood – and who am I to argue? Keen Footscray watchers will know that Cafe d’Afrique was closed for what seemed like ages. But – oh, joy! – Faisel and his wonderful enterprise are back. There’s new artwork on show, but the welcome and the food remain the same. Faisel says he may introduce a menu once things settle down a bit. But, heck, we like the no-menu set-up. We’re not the only ones who wander in here and ask: “What’s on?” For Bennie and I, that means a gloriously rich lamb key wot – that terrific gravy is made without tomatoes. Bennie has his with rice. I have mine with injera. There are some bones in the lamb, but the meat is fall-apart tender and delicious. We each also get a serve of an equally scrumptious okra stew, also with lamb. As well, we are provided a side bowl of a beaut lentil stew and matching crisp, fresh salads. The price of our lunches is $15 apiece – that seems to be the going rate for everything here, no matter what choices or configuration you go with. The coffee, of course, is excellent. And that costs $3.

Prefab homes go upmarket It’s not that there’s anything terribly novel about prefabricated houses. A yurt is a prefab, or transposable dwelling, that can be quickly reassembled. And during the gold rush, Melbourne was the prefab capital of the world, with thousands of flat-packed, fast-build cottages imported in the early 1850s. More contemporary prefab variations have been available for a couple of decades, which now has many savvy Australian companies operating in a market niche estimated to make up 2 to 4 per cent of new home constructions. The factory-built components that can be delivered to site where they can be completed to lock-up sometimes in a matter of days, come in two forms: as fully fitted modular units that can be bolted together into variable floor plans; or as flat-pack panels with all the requisite plumbing, wiring and insulation already integrated. No longer do prefabs look like conjoined containers that quite literally came off the back of a truck. As Craig Chatman, registered architect, builder and founder of the Melbourne outfit ARKit agrees, modular and panel-building systems are becoming so sophisticated, responsive to client needs, and

flexible in the way they can be shaped up that “from the street you won’t know that it’s a building that’s been manufactured off site”. “Embellished prefabs” is what Chatman calls the new generation modular housing ARKit, established eight years ago, now employs 40 people – including eight full-time architects – in its Sunshine factory. It has seen an annual doubling of business, with much of the demand coming from Melbourne’s inner north and the west. “Footscray, Newport and Williamstown have become hot spots for us,” Chatman says. A University of Melbourne study predicts that within a decade, Australia’s modular-building sector could command a 15 per cent slice of the construction industry. Chatman believes the reason for this will come down to one word: certainty. “For between $400,000 and $1.2 million, we can deliver on a tight schedule, which means that clients aren’t put through the wringer in terms of conventional building costs, nor be sloshing around a muddy paddock for 12 months”. City West Falcons went down 67-65 to Geelong Cougars in a classic in the first week of the Victorian Netball League championship division finals. The Falcons’ double overtime loss will force them to take the long route to the grand final. They will meet Casey Demons in a preliminary final this Wednesday night. Falcons coach Marg Lind described the heart-stopping game as “very insane”. “I’d like to have another crack at Geelong because that was a good game,” Lind said. “That’s what sport is all about, it was so up and down, our down was a massive down. “A credit to the girls for coming back, but there will be a few kicking themselves.” City West fans felt a contrast of emotions across the four quarters and extra time periods. The Falcons were shocked early, trailing by a massive 10 goals and it took until late in the fourth quarter to finally break down the deficit. The last four minutes of the fourth quarter was as good a patch of netball as the Falcons

have played all season, but it was only enough to force overtime and not secure the win. “Our last four minutes might’ve been our best for the season,” Lind said. “That’s a big comeback 10 goals at that level. “There were a lot of errors that we wouldn’t normally make. It showed enormous character to fight back.” City West took the lead in overtime, but could not hang on to it. Lind was disappointed with some of the 50-50 calls that did not go her team’s way. “I thought we were a bit stiff not to get a few held balls,” Lind said. “We had some great defensive efforts in the double overtime, but we just didn’t get rewarded. “That’s just luck, you have to accept that. “We have to be accountable because we put ourselves in that position.” City West was all the rage going into the finals. The Falcons blitzed the regular season, going 17-1 across the 18 rounds.

Tide turns for Bulldogs By Lance Jenkinson After hitting rock bottom, Footscray can see light at the end of the tunnel. The Bulldogs finally ended their 13-game Rugby Victoria Dewar Shield losing streak with a thrilling 24-23 win over Endeavour Hills at Henry Turner Reserve on Saturday. Bulldogs coach Leni Tui was thrilled for his players, half of whom decided to stay at the kennel as others departed, while the other half are youngsters making their way at the top level. “We had a lot of players walk out on us,” Tui said. “We’re lucky we had a few players hang around and we called on the colts to step up. “Today they stepped up. We’ve been wanting a win for them and they deserve it.” Footscray’s victory had an element of luck to it.

Endeavour HIlls had a chance to snatch victory through a penalty goal late, but the kick landed short. There was no such problems off the kicker’s tee for Footscray’s Yuta Matsumoto, who kicked the game-sealing penalty. The Japanese native also had three conversions for the game and his kicking in general play was also a factor in the Bulldogs win. “He performed pretty well for us today,” Tui said. “He kicked those important penalties and conversions and just turned those Endeavour Hills big boys around with his kicking.” Blessing Sehweah scored an early try to keep Footscray in the contest. Late on, tries to captain Charlie Sale and Sau Ofahengaue allowed the Bulldogs to bridge the deficit. Sale was hugely influential on the result and has been a leader in the face of adversity for the Dogs.

Tui is hoping the win will be a turning point for Footscray. “It was good to finally get a win,” Tui said. “We’ve had some heavy losses, but we’re moving forward.” Tui believes Footscray will be better for the pain for of 2019 in the long run. No matter how low they have been, the Bulldogs’ coaches have been setting standards that will stay with the group for a long time. “We had some issues with players not turning up to training and I didn’t just allow those players to rock up on game day and expect to walk into our team,” Tui said. “The discipline didn’t go down well with some of the players who expected just to walk into our team and some of them walked away. “I’m glad that we changed the culture. Those guys who hung around have sort of dragged the team back.”

Lind was not fooled by the competition her side faced in the finals. “Maybe the girls felt the pressure of being the favourites in that game,” she said. “Everyone was saying Falcons are the favourites, but I never thought that. “I thought anyone in the four was a possibility. “We’ve just got to really concentrate this week and do our homework on the opposition and come in with a bit more discipline and concentration.” City West centre Molly Jovic is in some doubt for the preliminary final clash with Casey. She appeared to roll an ankle early in the loss to Geelong and the Falcons are sweating on her health. Seagulls sign Collins contract Williamstown will be in safe hands for the forseeable future in the Victorian Football League. The Seagulls have signed senior coach Andrew Collins to a two-year contract until the end of the 2021 season. Collins is the third-longest serving coach at Williamstown behind Gerry Callahan and Brad Gotch. Seagulls chief executive officer Jason Reddick said Collins’ record speaks for itself. “Collins has been a wonderful coach for Williamstown since his original appointment in 2014,” Reddick said. “He has led the team to top-four finishes in each of his years in charge, headlined by our premiership victory in 2015. “As well as sustaining an elite level of team performance, ‘Collo’ has led the development of an unprecedented number of players through to the AFL system, as well as developing his assistant coaches.” In a recent interview with Star Weekly, Collins expressed his satisfaction at working with Williamstown. Aside from the enjoyment he gets from on-field success and developing players on the Seagulls’ list, Collins loves the history of the club, its rivalries and the challenges of facing an AFL-aligned club. “I am really grateful and honoured to be the senior men’s coach for the next two years,” Collins said. Collins was a three-time premiership player with Hawthorn in the AFL. The 54-year-old played 212 games at the top level and won the 1990 Peter Crimmins Memorial Trophy for best-and-fairest at the Hawks. Collins began coaching in 1997 and had immediate success, leading Sandringham to the premiership in his first season. He served as an assistant coach at St Kilda and Hawthorn in the AFL before returning to the state leagues to coach at Box Hill, Coburg and SANFL club West Adelaide. “It is a privilege to work with so many great people,” Collins said. Eagles drop a close one but look ahead to the finals While it hurt to lose the top-of-the table-clash and almost certainly give up the top ranking in the finals, Yarraville Seddon coach Vinnie Turcinovich expects the learnings that came out of the game to be beneficial for his team down the stretch of the Western Region Football League division 2 season. What is inevitable is that the Eagles will come face-to-face with top side Wyndhamvale in the finals, so Turcinovich has great vision to trawl through from the seven-point loss at the Yarraville Oval on Saturday in order to be better prepared next time around. “If there is a good time to lose a game, it’s probably now, three games out from finals,” he said. “Let’s reset, have a good chat about it, get back on the track and work really hard.” It was a rare stinker of a game for Yarraville Seddon. The Eagles barely reached 50 per cent of their potential in Turcinovich’s estimation. Suffice to say, there is plenty to work on. “We were miles off our best and we know that,” Turcinovich said. “You get six inside 50s and none of them hit a target.

“To their [Wyndhamvale’s] credit, they looked like they wanted the ball a little bit more, their skills were a little bit better, they were a little bit braver.” Turcinovich has just about conceded that Yarraville Seddon will not finish on top. The Eagles finished the day two games and percentage in arrears of Wyndhamvale. Turcinovich is certainly not fussed because a second-placed finish will still give them a double chance in the finals. “It would’ve been good to end up on top, but I want it to be a little bit different to last year, winning every game and losing in the big one,” he said. “The pressure is on them and we’re going to be hunting them, rather than them hunting us. “I think it will work to our favour.” While it was an off day for Yarraville Seddon collectively, it did have a handful of positional winners on the day. Jets set for big time By Lance Jenkinson There is no better indication of draft-worthiness at the end of a junior football career than being shortlisted to attend the AFL Draft Combine. Three Western Jets have drawn the attention of the AFL recruiters and invited to the combine in Melbourne during the first week of October. Emerson Jeka, Darcy Cassar and Josh Honey were nominated by AFL club talent scouts to be part of a testing phase that will include elite juniors from across the nation. Jets football operations manager Matthew Dervan said their inclusion was “a big tick” for the players. “They’ve continually put themselves in the forefront of Vic Metro selectors, All Australian selectors and they’ve obviously been strong performers for the Jets over the past couple of years,” he said. “It’s a testament to their hard work, their attitude and their dedication.”

When the NAB League season is on, there is structure in a player’s week. In the post-season, though, it is incumbent on the player and high-performance staff to work closely together to ensure the player is at peak fitness and clear of mind for draft testing. “No matter where we’re placed as a team heading into the NAB League finals series and no matter where we finish up, those boys will continue to train the whole way through,” Dervan said. “We’ll prepare them as best as possible to ensure they’re ready to go and they can put their best foot forward in all the tests that get presented to them.” Jeka, an emerging key position talent, has been touted as a likely draftee since he was 16. Mainly used as a key forward, Jeka has turned in some quality performances as a key defender in recent weeks. “He just continues to show those glimpses

of quality that could be a real asset to an AFL club,” Dervan said. Cassar fits the mould of a typical modern day footballer. The utility seems at ease no matter where Jets coach Ryan O’Keefe deploys him, but has thrived as a half-back this season. “I think he relished the role of being a bit of a general,” Dervan said. “He’s a bit of a quarter back – someone the side could give the ball to for a bit of run and carry. “I think he’s someone who would just thrive at an AFL club environment in terms of taking it all in, wanting to learn and wanting to develop.” Honey is one of the most exciting midfielders that will test at the combine. His ability to break the lines with his speed and use the ball effectively has become a feature for the Western Jets. “When he’s got the ball in his hands, you always think something good is going to happen for us,” Dervan said.

Williamstown CYMS will not be caught in the chase for the VAFA Premier C minor premiership. The undefeated CYs are four games and a massive amount of percentage ahead of second-placed Ormond. Mathew Montebello’s CYs continued on their merry way with a 142-point trouncing of bottom side PEGS at PEGS Sports Fields on Saturday.

Netball

Point Cook Centrals are the first team through to the WRFL Netball division 1 finals. The Sharks are one win away from a perfect season after battering Point Cook Bulldogs 59-29 in the major semi-final. Point Cook and Sunshine will meet in the preliminary final. Spotswood was the first team through to the division 2 grand final, thrashing Manor Lakes 53-25. Manor Lakes will face Sunshine in the preliminary final.
