Split over Substation By Goya Dmytryshchak A stoush has erupted between The Substation committee of management and community members involved in restoring the building. The committee has been accused of abandoning the community and deliberately running down membership numbers, but the director has defended the current structure as typical of a professional arts organisation. Darren Williams, founder and president of 16 years of the Newport Substation restoration and redevelopment project, said that since 2013 community membership of the arts venue had dropped from hundreds down to five.

“I retired from the committee once we had created the operational Hobsons Bay Community Arts Centre (now The Substation) and employed our first director, Jeremy Gaden,” Mr Williams said. “We were in a very strong position, both financially and organisationally at that time, with hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund infrastructure and programs and more than 500 association members.” Mr Williams has started a website named saveoursubstation.org, which he says is to provide a forum representing “the excluded membership of hundreds of Hobsons Bay residents”. He has called a community action meeting for Tuesday, August 6. “I have declarations from many former members, including recently retired committee members, to state that they did not receive notification of annual general meetings or membership renewal notices,” he said. “You have to seriously question the values and motives of a group that receives over $1 million over three years from our local council, but will not allow the community of Hobsons Bay to elect its committee.” Mr Williams said The Substation had become focused on a very narrow “edgy” vision within the arts. “The Substation has … lost its heart,” he said. The site is owned by the state government through VicTrack. It is leased to an incorporated not-for-profit association with a committee of management operating as The Substation. The Substation director Brad Spolding said he was seeking mediation with

seven members on a “skilled-based” committee. “In the early days, when the building was being restored, there were hundreds of members, the reason being that they were volunteers working on the building,” he said. “When the building project was complete, the membership dwindled. “I was appointed in 2015 and by the time we get to 2015 the membership is quite small. “That’s how we arrived to today with our current governance structure, which I might add is a typical governance structure for a professional arts organisation.”

Soccer controversy kicks on By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong council has moved to quell rising tensions over a proposed redevelopment of Footscray Park to cater for Melbourne Victory football club by calling a public meeting on the proposal. The decision follows a chaotic night at the council’s headquarters last Tuesday, when a fire alarm triggered the evacuation of more than 100 protesters who had assembled to speak out against the plans. More than a dozen officers from Victoria

Police’s public order response unit evacuated the building after the alarm went off just as the council’s scheduled monthly public meeting was due to begin. The protesters had earlier been involved in a rally on the town hall steps calling for the council to reject Melbourne Victory’s plans to build a new soccer academy, including three soccer pitches, at the western end of Footscray Park. More than 4000 people have signed an online petition against the proposal, but others in the community have come out in support.

Maribyrnong mayor Martin Zakharov defended the decision not to allow the protesters into the meeting. He said the public gallery could only fit 75 people and the council had prioritised entry for people directly involved in matters due for decision. “We want to try and find a way forward with the Save Footscray Park people, so we are going to try and meet with them.” Cr Zakharov said the police recommended cancelling last Tuesday’s meeting. Save Footscray Park’s Gemma Cafarella said

the council had mismanaged the situation. “If there’s an emergency evacuation there’s an emergency evacuation, but plainly we weren’t going to be let in,” she said. “They had police there to stop us when we first got here, they locked the doors so we couldn’t get in. “I still feel incredibly disappointed with the council.” The public meeting has been scheduled for 6.30pm Wednesday, August 7 at a location still to be confirmed. A decision on the Melbourne Victory proposal is due later in the month.

A chef who moved from Hong Kong to Maribyrnong to start a new life has been sentenced to eight years in prison over his role in importing more than four kilograms of methamphetamine through the mail. Hon Wing Lau, 42, faced the County Court on one charge of attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug. The court heard Lau, who had moved to Melbourne to study English and worked as a chef, was one of two co-offenders involved in importing two consignments of methamphetamine valued at up to $2.7 million on the streets. The first consignment, from the US, was bound for a Maribyrnong address but intercepted at Melbourne Airport in 2016. It was found to contain 1.6 kilograms of pure methamphetamine hidden in bedsheet sets. The second consignment, from Malaysia, was intercepted in 2017 and found to contain 2.8 kilograms of pure methamphetamine hidden inside a shipment of handbags. The total amount of 4.4 kilograms was almost six times the 750 grams of methamphetamine considered to be a commercial quantity. A series of intercepted phone calls revealed Lau had played a key role in determining where the parcels would be sent. Lau was convicted and sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment, with a non-parole period of five years and six months. He had already served 784 days of pre-sentence detention. He is expected to be deported at the conclusion of his sentence.

The Footscray home of Amelia and Dan Farmer, which doubles as the studio for their video production company Farmwalker Films, will be one of almost 40 locations across Footscray, Seddon and West Footscray taking part in the annual festival from August 9-18. Farmer said his daughters, aged one and two, had been helping he and his wife work on creating material that will be projected on to the front of their converted shop-front. â€œWeâ€™re using some green screen and live action stuff and the kids are bringing in different craft elements,â€? he said.

â€œAt the moment weâ€™re creating a model of the front of the shop out of perspex, a scale model that the kids will interact with.â€? Farmer said that despite the ready access people had to shooting video via smartphones, he was working hard to teach his children about the traditional craft of photography and film. â€œWe have done away with our smartphones and we have got dumb phones,â€? he said. Now in its sixth year, the West Projections Festival will include guided tours, performances and the chance to choose your own adventure on a self-guided tour of projection sites, which will operate from 6-10pm nightly. New move on Edgewater project By Benjamin Millar Conversion of the abandoned Club Edgewater project in Maribyrnong into residential apartments could begin as soon as next month after developer Ninety Four Feet revealed its plans to transform the site. The residential development at 31 Edgewater Boulevard Maribyrnong, dubbed Esen Apartments, will feature 94 one, two and three-bedroom apartments built above a childcare centre, medical suites and other retail space.

The 5100 square-metre site has remained in limbo since 2015, when the Western Bulldogs walked away from their half-built $30 million pokies and entertainment venue after a falling out with the site’s owner. Nearby residents labelled the concrete shell left at the site an eyesore and safety risk, raising concerns about illegal activities and rubbish dumping. Later plans for a 10-storey hotel and apartment complex fell through and the property was sold for a reported $9.5 million to Hamilton Marino Builders and Ninety Four Feet, the developer behind the recently completed Frankie apartment project in Yarraville. The Esen project will retain and retrofit the existing four-level shell as a podium, adding a further two residential levels. construction activity at the site, with an anticipated completion date of early 2021. “We’re excited about the site, we’re looking to get confidence back into it again,” he said. “The site is an island site, it’s got a podium and there

will be amazing setbacks for the top apartments and terraces all the way around.” Mr Giannotti said there had been strong early interest from locals in the area looking to downsize.

“At the opening weekend in our showroom, it was all owner-occupiers,” he said. “We have just finished Frankie in Yarraville and we are looking forward to getting into building on this site.”

Carer hopes for change By Goya Dmytryshchak A South Kingsville woman who became a carer after her late grandmother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer will testify at the aged care royal commission. Nicole Dunn was invited to this week testify in Mildura for the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety about her caring for her grandmother, Roma Dunn. “I became a carer for my grandmother in 2015,” Ms Dunn said.

“I got a phone call at my work one day – I work at a hospital in an emergency department – and it was from my aunty. “She said that she’d just been at the doctor’s with my grandmother – she appeared a bit jaundiced.” Ms Dunn learnt from a medical colleague that a mass had been found on her grandmother’s pancreas. “It turned out to be pancreatic cancer, which was terminal,” she said. “It could only be treated with palliative chemotherapy and she was given a prognosis of a year to live.” Ms Dunn moved into her grandmother’s Maidstone home and became a live-in carer at age 32 while still working. Her submission to the royal commission was made in the hope it would create change. “There needs to be increased supports to help an older person remain at home,” Ms Dunn said.

“Older people often wish to remain at home for as long as they can and carers often want to support that, particularly with access to things like in-home respite. “It is quite limited and there’s quite a difference if you can pay for services or if you’re relying on government services. “She spent the last six months of her life in a

nursing home because the care she needed was greater than what I could provide.” Ms Dunn’s experience led her to establishing her own business called Empower Aged Care Consulting to help others. Members of the public and institutions have until at least the end of September to make a submission to the royal commission.

Two men have been arrested for allegedly buying and selling fish illegally in Hobsons Bay. Investigators from the Victorian Fisheries Authority arrested the two on Wednesday and seized a boat and four-wheel-drive. Statewide investigations manager Brooke Hall said some squid was also seized after wholesale and retail premises were raided. “We will allege an organised crime arrangement whereby one of the pair, who does not possess a commercial fishing licence, was catching calamari squid in Port Phillip and transporting them to a seafood business,” he said. “Recreational fishers are not allowed to sell their catch – only licensed commercial fishers can do that.” Mr Hall said the angler was facing charges of unlawfully taking fish for sale and possessing the proceeds of crime. “Taking fish and unlawfully selling them into the retail chain undermines licensing arrangement for legitimate commercial fishers,” he said. “People acting as unlicensed commercial fishers … have the potential to affect the sustainable management of Victoria’s valuable fisheries resources.” He said the shop owner would be charged with receiving unlawfully-taken fish and dealing in the proceeds of crime. By Goya Dmytryshchak Nearly 100 people have objected to plans to build four double-storey dwellings on one lot in an Altona street. While the proposed subdivision for 12 McIntyre Drive is not uncommon in Altona, residents believe it is the first time there have been 95 objections to such a development. The planning application from Dajvis Andonov had been scheduled to be considered by a special planning committee of three councillors last week but has been postponed. Objector and architect Adam Mamaj said the plan was clearly an overdevelopment for the 801 square metre site, which currently has a single-storey dwelling. “As a community, we should expect that all developments will be safe and enjoyable to live in, as well as adding value to the amenity of the area,” he said. “By trying to fit too many dwellings on the site, the safety of all residents and the liveability of each dwelling have been compromised. “This development does not meet community expectations and the principles of good design.” Stuart Hercules, a civil engineer and objector, said it was an overdevelopment and a safety issue. “Our local community welcomes housing development that enhances local lifestyle but we are against overdevelopment like these townhouses that are unsafe and out of character,” he said. “There are no four two-storey unit developments within this precinct. “Fundamentally, it’s the safety aspects with accessing and egressing to the street. We’re going to have four times the number of vehicles moving in and out of that property.

A 19-year-old man arrested at gunpoint after robbing an Altona Meadows service station has been sentenced to at least two years jail. Benhui Gufla pleaded guilty in the County Court to aggravated burglary at the Coles Express on the corner of Queen and Victoria streets in July last year. The court heard that about 3.15am, Gufla and three co-offenders approached the servo from behind. Gufla was armed with a hammer and one of his accomplices had an imitation firearm. A lone male store attendant was stocking a fridge when he saw on CCTV the four run up to the sliding door. Terrified, he locked himself in the office and called triple-0. Gufla and the other three emptied the cigarette cabinet and Gufla unsuccessfully tried to pry open the till. One robber fled in the attendant’s car after finding the keys, while Gufla and two others ran away. The attendant saw his Hyundai being driven away, following a Holden Commodore on Queen Street towards Altona. About 3.40am, a police sergeant patrolling in Maidstone Street, Altona, saw the two vehicles behind 7-Eleven. The cars sped off, but later crashed. Gufla surrendered when confronted by police at gunpoint. He was sentenced to three years and 10 months jail with a non-parole period of two years.

Chef sows vegan dream Footscray home cooking whiz Simon Toohey plans to take his MasterChef success forward into a sizzling new career. Toohey, 32, was one of only three contestants to survive weeks of culinary challenges on the Network 10 hit show all the way to last week’s grand finale. His appearance was secured only after he successfully met a complicated “white coral” dessert challenge set by chef Peter Gilmore, joining Larissa Takchi and Tessa Boersma in the MasterChef Australia final three. The final challenge was to cook a three-course meal to feed 60 guests to win the coveted title of MasterChef 2019. Toohey began with an entree of roasted heirloom beets with a beet leaf puree.

His main course was lobster served with a champagne sauce. Dessert was pumpkin seed oil cake with roasted pumpkin ice cream. Toohey picked up $20,000 in prize money, but was edged into third place by winner Larissa, of New South Wales, and Queenslander Tessa. He said the experience had strengthened his resolve to pursue his dream of opening a vegan smokehouse focused on fighting food waste and keeping things local. “I don’t want to make a big deal about it being vegan,” he said. “I just want to bring the power of the vegetable to the forefront.” Benjamin Millar

Recycling dumped at landfill By Benjamin Millar Hobsons Bay residents are being urged to find ways to help avoid almost 200 tonnes of recycling material collected in the area each week from being dumped in landfill, after the EPA again ordered contractor SKM Recycling to stop receiving recyclable materials. Environment Protection Authority Victoria last week ordered the beleaguered company to stop receiving recyclable materials at its Coolaroo glass recycling facility, the site of two fires earlier this year. SKM has responded by also closing its four

recycling processing facilities in Laverton North, Coolaroo, Geelong and Hallam until further notice. EPA resource recovery facilities audit taskforce manager Danny Childs said glass waste received at the site has been contaminated with other types of waste, such as mixed plastics and paper, increasing fire risk in the stockpiles. SKM provides recycling services for more than 30 councils, collecting about half of Victoria’s kerbside recyclables. Hobsons Bay waste and recycling collections will continue as normal, however about 175

tonnes of recyclables collected each week will be sent to landfill. The council issued a statement saying it would keep the community updated. “In the meantime, if you can hold back your recycling, you are most welcome to do until recycling continues as normal.” Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said it has been a frustrating period of uncertainty for the area’s recycling service. “From SKM’s temporary closure in February we are fully aware of the vulnerability of Victoria’s recycling industry and are working through a number of options,” he said.

In the meantime, the council has arranged for free drop-off of paper and cardboard at One Paper in Laverton North. With the remaining two waste operators Visy and Polytrade nearing capacity, the state government is scrambling to avoid up to 400,000 tonnes of recyclable material going to landfill each year. Premier Daniel Andrews said on Sunday that the Victorian government is in talks with major stakeholders. Maribyrnong council recycling contractor Visy remains unaffected and collection and processing will continue as normal.

Mastering the game Women are being invited to join the first inner west AFLW over-35s side. Williamstown Superules masters football club co-ordinator, Sharlene “Charlie” Hetherington, said the side started this year and was seeking more women to sign up. “We’ve got 19 women that had never played football before and have lived out this childhood dream,” she said. “Some of the people are saying that in their families it was just not something that was supported or allowed. “Other people were saying [they] played in primary school but they got to year 11 and 12 and were told, nup, girls can’t play footy. “It’s quite unique that there’s this coming together of this band of women, of various abilities and shapes and sizes and reasons they’re there, that have formed this bond.” Hetherington said the club had created

a camaraderie among a network of women whom otherwise may never have met. “The friends that I’ve made this year through football – some women that have experienced family violence, that have experienced significant isolation or mental health issues – they now have a network of 40 women that are in their life to step in and support them and feel they’re proud of something. “A few women have said, ‘I’ve actually joined just to get street cred with my kids so that they can see I can start something new at 40, that you are never too old to learn new skills; that this is completely out of my comfort zone’.” Women can join in various capacities – not just as players – including as social members. Lilly throws her heart into sport Ten-year-old Lilly is well on track to represent Victoria at a national sporting competition. A pupil at Mossfiel Primary School in Hoppers Crossing, she has been selected for the School Sport Victoria 10 to 12 year-old team, which will head to Darwin in September. Lilly will participate in the discus category at the School Sport Australia Championship. Lilly said that she might also take part in shot-put at the event, if another pupil is unable to attend. Lilly said she “felt really, really excited and really happy” after being selected for the state team, following a trial held at Lakeside Stadium. As a member of Altona Little Athletics, Lilly said that this year, she had placed first in the regional Little Athletics competition for discus and shot-put. Lilly said that she would like to thank her coach Brett Hardeman and also Erik Johnson, a World Masters discus bronze medallist, whose training camp she attended earlier this year.

Maribyrnong council has thrown its support behind community calls to introduce truck curfews and bans on Williamstown Road. Star Weekly this month reported residents living along the road, which passes through Seddon, Yarraville and Kingsville, were furious that promised truck curfews were left out of a state government announcement on stricter curfews and speed limits on other key routes. A Williamstown Road Advocacy report prepared for Wednesday night’s ordinary council meeting suggested the council advocate the state government to introduce freight curfews and a truck ban on Williamstown Road, where truck trips are projected to double to about 4000 per day by 2031. The council also continues to push for improved north-south freight connections in the industrial precinct further west of the residential areas carrying the burden of the port’s growing freight load. “Alternate north-south connections are required in appropriate locations to alleviate the expected increase in truck movements on Williamstown Road once the West Gate Tunnel is operational,” it stated. “The Paramount Road extension is seen as the most viable and achievable north-south connection.” The report suggested the council ask that truck curfews on Williamstown Road be immediately introduced and add the road to the list of local routes with 24/7 truck bans in place after the West Gate Tunnel opens in 2022. The council will also push for the Paramount Road extension from Somerville Road to Geelong Road to be fast-tracked and for container storage to be moved closer to the port to alleviate future truck and traffic congestion.

MY PLACE Jozsef Tallosi’s music rings out through the halls of Sunshine and Footscray hospitals, giving a lift to patients and staff alike. He spoke to Tate Papworth about his love of violin and classical music. What’s your connection to the area? I’ve been playing the violin at Footscray and Sunshine hospitals for about eight months now. Tuesday at Footscray and Wednesday at Sunshine. What spurred you into volunteering your time? I love playing the violin. A musicians unwritten task is to let people hear something they don’t know. A lot of people come up to me and ask what music I’m playing. I like to think they go home and look up the composer. I love spreading good music. I bet the patients and staff appreciate your music? I get lots of comments. I’m not a comment hunter at all. It’s really lovely when people do come up to you and tell you they love it. Some people even stop for 5-6 minutes and listen. They’re the real listeners. If after that they say they love it, then that means a lot.

Where did you learn? I was taught in a normal school in Budapest. I moved out to Australia in 1986, but I’ve made sure I keep playing. I came to Melbourne – I’ve done other jobs, but the violin has always been with me. When I first got here, some weeks I worked 70-75 hours, but I’ve always managed because of the violin.

When did you start playing? All my life. The violin was bought for my brother who is two years older than me. That didn’t work out that well and my father asked if I wanted it. I said yes and it went from there.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir pays homage to the Republika We applaud what Eva Maddox and her crew are doing at Ragusa Republika. Here there are no shortcuts, cutting of corners or scrimping. Everything is high class and stylish, the dining room itself elegant and warmed just right on the chilly night we visit. That hands-on approach extends to just about every aspect of the food, from house-made stocks and up. Eva and wine expert Pino are enthusiastic out front and Team CTS – Kenny, Bennie, Nat – very much enjoys taking up the invitation of a complimentary meal. The prices here are on the high side – but punters most definitely get what they pay for. Our Croatian food adventure starts with a bang and hardly ever lets up. Warm, fresh-baked rolls are sensational and served with olive oil and (house-made) ajvar (relish). Zagorski strukli are traditional baked pastry pillows filled with ricotta and truffle oil ($19). We get one apiece – and it’s almost like they float to our eager mouths. The squid ink dumplings that come with crni njoki ($20/$39) are almost as light, though it is the fresh-as calamari with garlic and chilli that truly grabs the attention. The chicken noodle soup is the big hit of the night. It has just the right amount of oil to lend every mouthful a velvety feel. And, yep, the noodles are housemade. Bennie is very satisfied with his svinjska

The one dish that falls short of delighting us is Nat’s lignje u proseku of roasted calamari with potato, capers and prosek ($41). For all we know, this could be an outstanding rendition of this dish. But the combined sweetness of the onions and dessert wine leaves us more puzzled than anything. Strudla od visnje (sour cherry strudel with hazelnut ice cream, $17) and knedle (plum dumplings with plum sauce and sour cream, $17) are every bit as perfect and sweet-withsome-sour as father and son were hoping for. New Homes Engineered timber lays the foundation for shift in building The way Australian homes are built could be changed forever, with new research into a type of engineered timber showing it could cement its place as an environmentally friendly alternative to concrete. Australian cross-laminated timber, or CLT, can replace concrete in many situations, including being used as a foundation for a house. Studies have already been conducted on European CLT, which is being used in towers and building extensions in Australia now. But local CLT is different because the composition of the wood differs here. Associate Professor at Deakin University Mahmud Ashraf said CLT was being manufactured in Australia for the first time, and the research he was undertaking was needed to determine its exact strength. “The funny thing is, even though it’s called CLT, the properties vary greatly depending on the type of timber you use,” he said. “Australian timbers are a little bit harder than the European ones. We expect that it will give us a bit more strength than European strength.” CLT and other engineered timber types can have a comparable strength to reinforced concrete, but they are not as strong as steel. Its main limiting factor is how far it can span – about six metres. Now there was local production of the material, Associate Professor Ashraf said, there were new possibilities for its use. “CLT has a very good future, one of the things we’re talking about now is we’re moving towards prefabricated homes,” Ashraf said. “CLT can be a real game changer. You

can make and design your house and you take everything on site and you assemble. It can be like Ikea furniture.” Builders would still be needed, he conceded, but the construction process would be faster and cheaper, even though the materials would cost more.

Cement and concrete are considered damaging to the environment due to the large amounts of energy and water needed in their production. CLT was viable to use in a detached home, Ashraf said, but at the moment the early adopters were all choosing to use the

SPORT Lacrosse star thrilled to claim an Australian role Molly Dunham will realise a childhood dream when she represents Australia at the under-19 Women’s Lacrosse World Championships in Canada starting this week. Dunham was sports mad growing up and always had a desire to pull on the green and gold of her country. It was only when she discovered lacrosse and her talents as a goalkeeper that her dream started to take shape. “I went through a few sports growing up, but when I found lacrosse, I knew it was the sport for me,” she said. “I was like, I can go far in this sport, and now I’m really honoured to be able to wear my country’s colours and represent it.” Dunham is one of two Newport Ladies Lacrosse Club players in the Australian squad. Taylah Comeadow was named as an alternate and will be in the touring party. Dunham has been one of the standout

rising goalkeepers in Victorian lacrosse. She pulled on the Victorian colours at national championships at under-15 and under-18 levels. That’s an incredible feat when it is considered the 19-year-old has been playing lacrosse for only six years. She is a fast and willing learner. Goalkeeping has become a passion for Dunham. “It’s a thrill when you save it,” she said. “You can hear everyone roar in the crowd. “It just makes me so proud to take that save and create a play from that save. “I don’t need to be scoring the goals to be an important player on the team.” Dunham is looking forward to the challenge of playing against the world’s best in her age group for Australia. She will do everything in her powers to keep the scoreboard quiet for opposition teams, but can offer no guarantees of how her team will fare.

It was an arm-wrestle throughout, but Williamstown willed itself over the line. “Today was a really tough challenge against a quality team,” Collins said. “It was a really important victory for us because if we lost that one, we would’ve gone back into the group a little bit. “Instead, we’ve now got a chance of finishing in the top two.” On a day when players were in and out of the game, Liam Hunt and Mitch Hibberd were the Williamstown midfielders who produced four-quarter performances. Liam Hunt did a power of work at the coalface. The former Coburg player is evolving into one of the side’s premier in-and-under ball winners. “He’s just growing for us as a big, clean inside midfielder,” Collins said. “He controls the middle of the ground and then occasionally pushes forward or back.” Hibberd continued on with his fine season. He finished with a game-high 29 disposals – the seventh game in a row in which he has registered more than 20 possessions – and eight tackles. Nick Rodda, Jaylon Thorpe and Josh Pickess kicked three goals apiece for Williamstown. Rodda and Thorpe were commanding the air inside attacking 50. “They were really big marking players today and it gave us a real presence in the front half,” Collins said. Dunham is majoring in criminal justice and hopes to return to Australia and take up a role in the police force. In the meantime, she is enjoying her time in the US, playing NCAA lacrosse. “I’ve always wanted to play sport in the US,” Dunham said. “To be there and to be able to play college lacrosse is a really good experience.” Dunham is grateful to her former coaches, Sue Sofarnos and Sue McSolvin, for their impact on her career. Falcons ready to fly against rival Cougars The rivalry between City West Falcons and the Geelong Cougars is set to go up another notch in the Victorian Netball League championship division finals. The top-two ranked sides will face off in a mouth-watering semi-final at the State Netball and Hockey Centre tonight at 7pm for a direct passage through to the season decider. The beginning of the rivalry can be traced back to last year’s grand final when the Falcons beat the Cougars in a hard-fought contest to take out the premiership. While that grand final created an instant rivalry, there was already one building among the two clubs west of the West Gate Bridge. Ever the netball promoter, Falcons coach Marg Lind was quick to jump on the fierce city-versus-country factor. “It’s a Geelong and Melbourne thing – just like Western Bulldogs and Geelong Cats [in the AFL],” Lind said. “There’s definitely a rivalry, it’s always competitive and we know it’s going to be on.” Moreover, the two teams are extremely familiar with one another. Geelong is coached by former Falcons assistant coach Gerard Murphy. The Cougars also have five starting players who came through the Falcons system. “They all know each other pretty well,” Lind said. “A lot of them have come through our stable and some have come through state teams together and are a very similar age group. “There’s a fair bit of knowledge about each other on both sides.” Lind half-joked that Geelong’s potential tactics to bring down the Falcons could be “tactics we’d use on ourselves” because of Murphy’s familiarity with Falcons netball. She conceded Geelong will be a dangerous team in the finals. “We’re under no illusions, they’ll be out to get us, no doubt.” City West finished the home-and-away rounds with a 17-1 record after a 69-36 win over Boroondara Express in the final round last Wednesday night at the SNHC. Gutsy Porters dig deep to keep their season ticking For the sake of its season, Newport had to stand up and deliver. The fifth-placed Porters did just that with a gutsy 14-point victory over Point Cook Centrals at Featherbrook Reserve on Saturday to keep their Western Region Football League division 2 finals hopes alive. Porters captain Munir El Houli said it was a do-or-die game, as his side was entering the round two games outside the top four. “This would’ve been done and dusted after today if we couldn’t get the four points,” he said. “From here on end, we’ve still just got to keep on winning. We want to play finals footy and we’re good enough to be there.” It will go down as one of Newport’s best wins of the year. Aside from the importance of the game, the Porters were also battling hard for numbers after three players pulled out on the morning of the game. Porters coach Ziggy Kadour called up three reserves players, but they were used sparingly.

Newport trailed at every change, but only ever by a kick or two. Staring a 12-point deficit in the face at three-quarter time, the Porters launched one last assault, the four-goal-to-nil final quarter securing the win. “Our leaders stepped up and had to take control of the game,” El Houli said. “We were reminding each other at half-time and three-quarter time that we’re in the game and we’ve got to stick at it. “Credit to all the boys, the youngsters stood up when they needed to and the leaders put their hand up and made sure everyone was doing what they had to.” Mustafa Mesto was outstanding for Newport with seven goals. “The beauty about ‘Musti’ is that he’s been working hard for his goals,” El Houli said. “It’s not popping in and getting the sneaky one out the back – he’s really leading hard to the ball carrier and the second, third and fourth

efforts as well. He’s really making sure he earns his goals and they’re not just easy handballs over the top.” The game-sealing goal was kicked by Mohamad Uweinat. The youngster was one of Newport’s best, along with Malek El-Hassan, Belal Mesto and Khaled Hawli. The Porters will travel to third-placed Parkside on Saturday for another crucial game. Elsewhere in division 2, Yarraville Seddon kicked poorly yet still beat North Footscray. West Footscray had no answers to Wyndhamvale, copping a 116-point thrashing. In division 1, Altona moved a step closer to the minor premiership after a 174-point battering of Point Cook. The Vikings are two games and percentage clear on top with a relatively easy draw in the run home. Spotswood has some work to do to secure a top three spot after losing to Werribee Districts. Altona Magic pulled off a miracle comeback to earn a 4-4 draw with Port Melbourne Sharks in NPL Victoria action at JL Murphy Reserve on Saturday evening. It seemed to be turning into a disastrous night for the Magic, who were trailing 4-0 at half-time. However, Altona refused to give up, piling on four unanswered goals of their own through Dane Milovanovic, Daniel Kuczynski, Troy Ruthven and Hassan Jalloh. The Magic will take on ladder-leader Avondale at Paisley Park on Saturday night.

Western Jets were flat from the get-go in a 72-point loss to Murray Bushrangers in the NAB League at Norm Minns Oval on Saturday. Coming off two weeks without football, the Jets could not find their groove early on and suffered on the scoreboard. The shining lights for the Jets were three goals from Josh Honey and the continued good form of Cody Raak. The Jets have fallen to sixth on the ladder ahead of a tough trip to fourth-placed Oakleigh Chargers on Saturday morning. In VAFA Premier C, Williamstown CYMS pummelled Old Camberwell Grammarians by 129 points. Young Bulldog thrives By Lance Jenkinson Exciting young defender Buku Khamis was one of a number of Western Bulldogs players out and about in the west conducting Auskick clinics for local football clubs at the weekend. Khamis was joined by premiership key defender Fletcher Roberts for a footy clinic at the West Footscray Football Club on Saturday morning. Other local clubs and Bulldogs players involved were Albion (Toby McLean and Ryan Gardner), St Albans (Luke Webb and Ben Cavarra) and Sunshine (Fergus Greene and Laitham Vandermeer) on Friday night, and Caroline Springs (Lachlan Young and Lewis Young), Seddon (Lin Jong and Brad Lynch) and Yarraville (Billy Gowers) on Saturday morning. For Khamis, it was a good chance to interact with his local community, while offering a reminder of where it all started for him as a junior with St Albans. “It is exciting to be able to go out there and be able to play with the kids, teach them a few skills and just to connect with the wider community,” Khamis said.

“It’s just a reminder of the love we all had for the game as kids, as we still do now. “It’s great to see the kids being happy and showing their passion for the game.” Khamis landed at the Western Bulldogs last November as a rookie out of the club’s Next Generation Academy. The 19-year-old, born in South Sudan, got his start at St Albans before graduating into the ranks of the Western Jets in the TAC Cup. An elite junior, Khamis also represented Vic Metro at the national championships. Khamis is proud of his heritage and is happy to be a role model for a multi-cultural western suburbs community. One of his favourite aspects of Australian rules football is its ability to unite people from different cultures. “For me, it’s very important getting different cultures involved in the game,” Khamis said. “We’re all connected because of one sport and it allows you to make friendships with people from different countries. “I want to be an example to anyone out there who wants to pursue playing AFL footy.” Khamis is relishing his first season at the

Western Bulldogs. While the rookie is yet to receive a call-up to the AFL side, he is learning the ropes off the likes of veteran defender Dale Morris and development coach Rohan Smith. “Dale Morris has been a really good role model to myself and a few of the other younger teammates,” Khamis said. “He’s just teaching me things on and off the field that have been really important in my development.” Khamis is a key member of a Footscray side that is on the verge of playing finals in the Victorian Football League. His form is “up and down” in his words, which is part and parcel of a young player new to the level, but he is enjoying growing with the younger players on the Bulldogs’ list. Khamis is aiming for a big finish to the season and will continue striving for an AFL debut this season. The Bulldogs will be looking to enhance their AFL finals prospects when they face Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. Footscray is also on the road in the VFL, taking on Frankston at Skybus Stadium on Sunday.

Hockey

Altona Hockey Club held its Pride Cup games on Sunday, celebrating inclusion and diversity in the community. The Seagulls players wore a specially designed playing uniform featuring a rainbow sash and a feature of the day was an inclusion pledge wall. In the on-field action, Altona played out a 2-2 draw with Southern United in the women’s premier league. In men’s premier league, Altona went down 7-4 to Southern United.

Basketball

It was cruel but somewhat fitting for Altona Gators to end the Big V basketball men’s division 2 season with a loss in a tight game. The Gators went down 76-74 on the road to Camberwell Dragons – the latest in a string of heartbreaking close losses this season. Of the Gators 18 losses this year, 11 were by 10 points or less. The Gators finished second-last with a 6-18 record.
