From pen to playground Stephanie dreamed of a makeover for her local playground. Rather than wait for something to happen, the Wembley Primary School pupil penned a letter to Maribynong council in 2017 to make her heartfelt appeal heard. Fast-forward to 2019 and the upgrade of the play space in Angliss Reserve in Yarraville is complete. “I particularly wanted there to be a swing that could be used by children with a disability, as everyone should be able to have fun at their local playground,” Stephanie said. The council drew on Stephanie’s request in creating a draft design for the upgrade. Community feedback was incorporated into a final design. Stephanie said she was proud of herself for writing a letter to the council and excited they acknowledged her request and acted on her suggestions. “I love the new basket swing as it’s suitable for everyone to use,” she said. “And I love that the council kept the older equipment and built on this instead of starting from scratch.” STEPHANIE, 12

Buyer beware: scam alert Police have issued a warning to consumers after an Australia-wide scam involving stolen identities was traced to Laverton. Senior Constable Matt Wright of the Hobsons Bay crime investigation unit warned people not to send any form of identification to sellers when buying items through social media platforms or online marketplaces. “Scammers are creating fake profiles and advertising items for sale, usually at a reduced price, to entice people to start communication with them,” he said. “If the buyer or the victim doesn’t want to
pay for the item until they receive it in the post, the scammer’s requesting them to send identification documents, such as passport and licence, to confirm who they are. “If they send their identification documents it’s likely they’re then blocked. “The victim thinks nothing of it – they didn’t lose any money – but what happens is the scammer is then somehow, using those identification documents, [to] open up bank accounts … and then they go on to then scam other people into transferring funds into those fake accounts. “If the victim’s happy to transfer money to buy the item … the victim will transfer money

into that account and then they’ll be blocked,” Senior Constable Wright said. Hobsons Bay detectives were notified of the scam after several reports were made to ACORN (Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network), which was replaced by the Cyber Issue Reporting System on June 30. “Police were advised of one of the scams as the bank account details were coming up to somebody who lived in Laverton. Inquiries that we made with that person revealed that they themselves were the victim of a scam and had sent their identification documents when they had tried to purchase something online,” Senior Constable Wright said.
“The victim from Laverton was trying to purchase a camera from somebody based in Queensland and when he went to purchase that he sent his identification documents. “Further checks on another victim from Queensland revealed that he’d already paid money after the fact into that bank account that was created in the Laverton victim’s name. “So, it’s like a big family tree of scams.” Anyone who thinks they have been scammed should make a report to Consumer Affairs Victoria at consumer.vic.gov.au/scamsavvy. Husband charged with murder By Erin Pearson A Footscray man has faced court charged with the murder of Melton South woman Cindy Crossthwaite 12 years after the mother-of-three was found beaten to death just metres from her infant son. Crossthwaite’s estranged husband, Emil Petrov, 55, appeared emotionless in the Melbourne Magistrates Court last Wednesday after being arrested at a business in Tottenham. The court heard it was Petrov’s first time in custody. Magistrate John Hardy remanded him to reappear in October. Ms Crossthwaite, 41, was found dead from
head injuries, her 13-month-old son Jonas was locked in a bedroom of their Andrew Street home in Melton South on June 20, 2007. Petrov had separated from his wife in September, 2005. He is the father of her two eldest children. Standing on the steps outside the court, Jesmine Crossthwaite, the daughter of Petrov and Ms Crossthwaite, thanked investigators for never giving up on the case. Ms Crossthwaite said she’d experienced a whirlwind of emotions since learning of her father’s arrest. “It wasn’t easy seeing him in the courtroom today,” she said.
The now 21-year-old was just nine and at primary school when her mother’s body was found in the hallway of their family home. Cindy Crossthwaite was last seen dropping Jasmine and her eight-year-old son off at Coburn Primary School, just a couple of blocks from their home, about 9am on the day of her death. The breakthrough in the high-profile case comes two years after police announced a $1 million reward, which police said remained on offer. The investigation remains ongoing. Visitors give colour to artist’s project Artist and illustrator Tegan Iversen is inviting people to warm up their winters with a kaleidoscope of colours. Iversen, a fine arts graduate from Victorian College of the Arts, is nearing the end of a month-long stint as artist-in-residence at the Footscray Artsbox, located outside Footscray library. The artist has been spending her residency creating a colouring book, inviting budding
artists or curious passersby in for “drop by colouring” sessions during open studio days. “All the drawings I create for the colouring book are drawn from, and inspired by, books I borrow from the Footscray library, as well as suggestions I receive from the community during my residency at the Artsbox,” she said. The residency follows a recent solo exhibition at Brunswick Street Gallery and solo exhibitions
last year at Incinerator Gallery, Off The Kerb and Montsalvat. Iversen currently co-runs F*EMS (Females* for Equality Making Stuff), a Melbourne-based collective that produces a triannual zine. Residents affected by last year’s toxic Tottenham warehouse fire are being invited to share their stories as part of an inquiry into Victoria’s handling of recycling and waste management. The Legislative Council Environment and Planning Committee will hold a public hearing at Parliament House on August 6. The hearing will include a series of community panels at which people will be able to talk through their experiences surrounding the fire that broke out on August 30 in a warehouse illegally stocked with chemical waste. Committee chair and western suburbs upper house MP Cesar Melhem said the inquiry began by hearing from government agencies and the fire brigade. “Now it’s the turn of community members who were affected,” he said. While the focus of the hearing will be on major fires at warehouses in Coolaroo in 2017, Tottenham in 2018 and Campbellfield in April this year, community members with experience of other factory fires associated with waste management are welcome to register to speak at the hearing. Mr Melham said hearing from affected residents would help ensure the committee had all relevant facts before making recommendations. The reporting date for the inquiry has been extended from August 13 to November 29. An interim report is due on August 29. Telco theft arrests
Police last week charged seven teens over smash-and-grab thefts from telco stores and seized electronic devices in raids at Point Cook, Tarneit and Truganina. The move follows the arrests of four boys for similar thefts the previous week. Police say similar thefts have happened in Altona North, Point Cook, Malvern, Thomastown, Sunshine, Airport West, Prahran, Brunswick and Waurn Ponds.

Dog attack
Authorities are continuing to search for a large dog believed to have attacked two other dogs in Williamstown on the afternoon of Monday, July 22. Hobsons Bay council was notified by a local vet about two dog attacks by an off-lead large black and tan dog. Both the dogs attacked needed treatment.

An indigenous artist from Williamstown has painted a 12-metre-long mural at Footscray train station telling the story of Melbourne’s west. Aretha Stewart Brown, an 18-year-old Gumbaynggirr woman, was commissioned by Rail Projects Victoria to create the piece. She made international headlines in 2017 by addressing a 50,000-strong protest in Melbourne calling for Australia Day’s date to be changed. The mural, created with an all-female crew and titled, To those in the struggle, the sunshine’s for you, features many instantly recognisable landmarks. “The western suburbs is home, it is my land,” Stewart Brown said. “As an indigenous person

who hasn’t had the privilege to live on country, I have tried to make up my own sense of what home is.” She said home to her felt like Conway’s fish shop, the West Gate, Footscray Market and the Sun Theatre Yarraville. A man in a wheelchair was among two men injured in attacks on a route 408 bus from Highpoint shopping centre to Maidstone. A man began abusing a 20-year-old Sunshine man about 1.20pm on July 15 before striking the victim on the back of the neck with an unknown weapon. The second victim, who uses a wheelchair, boarded about 10 minutes later and was also hit with the weapon and received minor injuries. The offender was kicked off the bus. Brutalist icon wins heritage tick By Benjamin Millar Love it or loathe it, Footscray’s Brutalist icon may be here to stay. State government agency Heritage Victoria has backed the National Trust of Australia’s calls for the Footscray Psychiatric Centre to be included on the Victorian Heritage Register, taking the divisive building within one step of legal heritage protection. Heritage Victoria executive director Steven Avery last week recommended that the 1970s-era landmark be placed on the Heritage Council of Victoria register, citing its “bold Brutalist design” and important role in “deinstitutionalisation” of the treatment of psychiatric illnesses. The four-storey facility was designed within the Public Works Department about 1970 and constructed at the rear of the Footscray Hospital site from 1974-1976. It closed in 1996. The heritage listing has taken on added urgency since the state government announced a new $1.5 Footscray Hospital will be built opposite Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus, paving the way for redevelopment of the existing site. Heritage Victoria’s report noted the building is “architecturally significant” for its dramatic Brutalist design and noteworthy for its “particularly monolithic” interpretation of the style. “It is an important example of the use of the Brutalist style in Victoria and a key example of the employment of the style by the Victorian Public Works Department for a major institutional work,” the report stated. The site was found to be distinguished from other Brutalist places already in the Victorian Heritage Register, such as the Harold Holt Memorial Swimming Pool and Clyde Cameron

College, due to its expression as a single block and the regularity of its projecting panels. The building was found to be mostly intact, in good condition and with its significance enhanced by its scale and prominent position. National Trust Victoria chief executive Simon Ambrose welcomed the Heritage Council backing, saying the building told an important story about the history of psychiatric treatment in the state. “Footscray Psychiatric Centre was also one of only 20 examples of Brutalism in Australia selected for the recently published Phaidon Atlas of Brutalist Architecture and is gaining
popularity with architecture enthusiasts and Instagrammers alike,” he said. John Jovic, a Brutalist enthusiast who spearheaded moves to protect the building, welcomed the Heritage Victoria backing. “It’s fantastic – this is a great step for protecting our heritage buildings,” he said. Bid to stop motorcycle ‘menace’ By Alesha Capone A man whose dog was hit by a motorcyclist riding near a path along Skeleton Creek in Hoppers Crossing is calling for improved safety measures and law enforcement to stop illegal motorcycle access to the creek area. Daniel (who asked for only his first name to be used), has started a petition on Change. org. It has so far been signed by more than 1050 people. The petition states that Daniel believes there needs to be stricter penalties for people caught accessing the creek on motorbikes, increased
patrols of the area by police on motorcycles and that Wyndham council needs to do more to prevent motorbikes from accessing the creek. Daniel said that he was overseas at the time his dog, Dennis, was hit. The collision occurred during the school holidays, when his partner, Rachael, was walking their eight-month-old daughter in a pram with Dennis accompanying them. Rachael said that as a group of motorcyclists approached, she yelled at them to slow down but they gestured rudely at her before one of the riders hit Dennis. She said the rider, who fell off his bike, said “sorry” before riding away.
Coffee tour is brewing The history of coffee from its early Arab beginnings will be celebrated at a stimulating Altona North event. The Islamic Museum of Australia is teaming up with Hobsons Bay Libraries for a “coffee tour around the world”. Guests will be able to taste Turkish kahve, Moroccan nous-nous, Saudi Arabian al-qahwa and Lebanese, Yemeni and Malay brews. The event, dubbed Coffee, The World Drink, will give attendees the opportunity to become more familiar with the drink Melburnians love. Coffee was brought to the Arab world from East Africa by Yemeni merchants who became the first to cultivate it. According to the event organisers, Sufis in Yemen developed a liquid form as early as the 13th century, finding it increased concentration, helped them stay awake for worship and aided

Rachael said Dennis ran away, and she and some friends spent several hours looking for him. They found Dennis near the creek around midnight, with bruises and grazing on his body. Friends of Skeleton Creek publicity officer John Dawes said motorcyclists and mini-bike riders accessed the creek’s shared walking and cycling path, and nearby parkland, in both Wyndham and Hobsons Bay. “These kids have come through near where we are planting and nearly skittled some of our volunteers,” Mr Dawes said.
“They shouldn’t be menacing the public, which is what happened with Daniel’s partner – it’s just a matter of time before someone is going to be injured or killed.” Wyndham city operations director Stephen Thorpe said: “While Victoria Police is the authority for investigating and apprehending people committing offences involving motorbikes, road bikes, dirt bikes and monkey bikes, council supports Victoria Police in their efforts.” Mr Thorpe said the council recently purchased two trail bikes for police to allow for more patrols of public reserves.

More delays for childcare centre By Goya Dmytryshchak Parents waiting for a Newport childcare centre to open say they have been left in limbo by constant delays with some unable to return to work or having to put their children in other centres. Nino Early Learning Adventures was originally slated to open in March this year. However, in correspondence seen by Star Weekly, parents were told the centre would open in late April or early May. In a subsequent letter dated June 12, the
“Nino Management Team” stated the centre’s “expected opening date for July is now unachievable”. “As you are aware, over the past months the construction (undertaken by the building owner) located at 519 Melbourne Road, Newport, has had ongoing setbacks and delays that have been challenging and out of our control but most disappointingly this has not allowed us access to the building to complete the centre’s set up for operation,” it stated. “The building owner has not been able to connect a power supply, thus continuously

A healthy slice of history Victoria’s oldest continuously running general practice last Friday marked 125 years since opening its doors in 1894. The Clinic Williamstown at 107 Ferguson Street opened its doors on July 19, 1894. Co-owner John Haddad and Dr Arthur Franks, the latter whom has been at the clinic for 35 years, celebrated the occasion. Dr Franks, who has been practicing since 1970, still works at the clinic three days a week at 84 years of age. He said Williamstown had changed since he started at the practice in 1984. “Williamstown was known as ‘Dog Town’ at that stage,” he said. “I saw, recently advertised, somebody selling a house in Williamstown here and we were described as a gentrified seaside suburb. “So, things have progressed in that sense.” Dr Franks said there were few other doctors when he first came to Williamstown.
“When I came here, there was a well-known doctor in the area, Geoffrey Long, who had been here since about 1932,” he said. “Then there was another one called Dr Donald Coutts, and he actually was a medical officer in the first world war. “When I first came down here, down in Kororoit Creek Road there was a centre where migrants used to come … and there was a great outbreak of the measles, which was something I hadn’t seen until that time.” The Clinic remains a general practice but now offers other services including podiatry, psychology, pathology and a dietician, with audiometry services starting soon. “It’s been a very enjoyable place to work and live,” Dr Franks said. “It’s a great pleasure to walk down the street and be acknowledged by patients that I haven’t seen for ages.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Paper cuts into recycling glut By Esther Lauaki A new recycling facility in Truganina is expected to process 39,000 tonnes of paper a year. Australian Paper Recovery’s $2.5 million paper sorting facility provides full grade separation of kerbside and commercial mixed paper and cardboard. As long as no glass is mixed in with collected recyclables, the high quality paper and card is sorted and graded, then reprocessed locally and used to make newspaper and packaging. Managing director Darren Thorpe said he was in discussions with a number of councils about adopting a “no glass collectionâ€? recycling policy. “We need uncontaminated product, especially from glass,â€? Mr Thorpe said. “We can accept the paper and card here and sort it into a form that can be used by domestic outlets in Australia feeding into a circular economy.â€? Since beginning operations in June, the facility has expanded to accept additional materials from regional and metropolitan kerbside recycling, including plastics and metals, further increasing recycling capability in Victoria. “If you’d seen us six weeks ago when we took the first load ‌ we had quite a challenge but here we are six weeks later and early results are showing really great outcomes. “But we need support from a wide range of industry and government agencies if we are to solve the wider issues with recycling and we believe we at APR are doing our bit.â€? Family seeks closure By Goya Dmytryshchak The family of Altona North man Richard Mladenich have said they won’t rest in peace until police catch his killer. Mladenich, 37, was shot dead with a .25 calibre pistol at St Kilda’s Esquire Motel in Acland Street about 3.30am on May 16 , 2000. A childhood friend of Roberta Williams, Mladenich was a well-known underworld figure with a wide range of criminal associates and links to the drug trade, police said. Purana Taskforce detectives on Thursday renewed an appeal for information and revealed never before seen photos inside room 18 of the motel where Mladenich was shot. Police are hoping a $1 million reward, first offered in 2011, will help solve the murder. In 2011, Homicide Squad detectives appealed for a man who had provided information about a firearm potentially used in the shooting to contact them again. Purana Taskforce Detective Sergeant Jesse Maxwell on Thursday said it was believed the shooter may have known Mladenich and entered the motel room through an unlocked door. He said investigators strongly believed the murder from nearly 20 years ago amid Melbourne’s gangland war could be solved. “Nineteen years has gone since Richard’s death and through that time people’s allegiances and loyalties change,” Detective Sergeant Jesse Maxwell said. “A lot of people who were big players back then, well they’re not around now. So, the fear of maybe talking has passed and we find that people, maybe they have seen the light and they want to come forward and speak to us. “It’s a big thing to offload off your chest.” He said there were “a lot of people of interest” with police searching for the shooter as well as

those who may have assisted in organising the murder and been involved afterwards. Mladenich’s older brother Mark said the family, including his 93-year-old mother, would not rest in peace until his murder was resolved. “Nineteen years has been long enough,” Mr Mladenich said. “He left a heartbroken mother, a brother and a family. He didn’t deserve what

Visa plea for crop sitter A Vietnamese national convicted of cultivating cannabis at an Altona Meadows grow house has won a bid to have his visa application reconsidered. Trong Quang Vu, 37, last December was denied a Prospective Marriage Visa by Home Affairs on the grounds he did not pass a character test. But the Administrative Appeals Tribunal of Australia this month set aside that decision and referred the matter back to Home Affairs for reconsideration. In 2009, Mr Vu travelled to Australia and overstayed his three month visitor visa, continuing to live in the country unlawfully. The tribunal heard that in 2010 police raided an Altona Meadows house owned by Mr Vu’s mother and seized 157 cannabis plants weighing 33.58 kilograms. Mr Vu and his partner Ms Do were arrested at the house. Mr Vu, who was the “crop sitter”, pleaded guilty and in 2011 the County Court sentenced him to 20 months’ jail for commercial cultivation of cannabis. The tribunal found Mr Vu’s low risk of reoffending and the nature of his crime did not make him an unacceptable risk to the Australian community. It found that Mr Vu’s children in Australia – his biological son and future stepdaughter with Ms Do – weighed strongly against refusing to grant his visa. Goya Dmytryshchak

West Footscray writer J.M. Green is retiring her beloved crime-fighting social worker Stella Hardy, but not before one last adventure. She speaks with Benjamin Millar.
As a social worker in Melbourne’s west, Stella works at the cutting edge of disadvantage. In the course of helping her clients, or her neighbour, or her family, she comes across more criminal activity than is normal for your average Melburnian – usually someone turns up dead! She has an overdeveloped sense of responsibility and tries to solve these crimes, though she has no business doing so. Exposing the corruption of the rich and powerful is personally very satisfying for her. But it is often at great personal cost, and all the while, she’s wrestling with her own criminal tendencies.

What’s your connection with West Footscray? I moved to Footscray with my husband from Ballarat where we were studying at the end of 1995. Since then we’ve moved once, to West Footscray. My family are from south east Melbourne and my husband’s from Melton, so we figured Footscray was a good compromise. What do you like most about the area? The surprising nature of the place. I went

He flew horizontally through the air – like a character in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – grabbed the man with the stolen booze around the neck and brought
Yes, it’s the last outing for Stella. The ‘social worker-detective’ idea has delivered some interesting story lines. It’s been a lot of fun, but it’s time to move on. There’s a new novel in the works. It’s in the early stages and might not amount to anything so I won’t say much more. At the same time, I’m studying screenwriting, which is a fantastic stretch for me creatively. The film and TV approach to storytelling – to plot, character, theme – is highly structured before writing even begins. But I’m enjoying the challenge of that framework.

Short film, tough topic A short film about a couple whose life plunges into turmoil after their daughter goes missing is in the running for a prestigious award. Newport filmmaker Tom Vogel said his film, One Second, influenced by real-life events, was sparked by his young son Max disappearing while playing at Williamstown’s Commonwealth Reserve. His son was found after a few minutes. Also in Vogel’s mind while writing the script were questions about the murderous intentions of men such as Robert Farquharson, who drove his three sons into a dam in 2005, and Arthur Freeman, who threw his daughter off the West Gate Bridge in 2009. “I tried to explore, well, how can any parent actually do that? And I didn’t come up with any
answers, but I ended up with the film,” Vogel said. “It is a bit controversial.” One Second has been selected by the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts for the Social Shorts online festival, where the public votes for its favourite films in three categories. Vogel said his film ended with an intense scene that had left some viewers “aghast”. “At its very first festival screening, at the Setting Sun Film Festival, the festival director was accosted by a patron,” he said. Nurses inject some help Two nurses, who live in Werribee and Altona, will soon head overseas to volunteer at an orphanage and clinic. Our duck ragout pappardelle, with confit tomatoes, parmesan oil and shaved grana Padano is a rich hearty dish for winter. And for dessert, we’ve perfected our sticky date pudding – always a definite favourite with our guests. Or you can always try our dessert tasting plate to share.” Which is not to say that The Strand has lost its roots – fresh, local seafood is still front and centre, and their famous seafood tower [pictured] is a great example. “This is a cracker for two seafood lovers and makes for an indulgent date night or special occasion. “Even our classic fish and chips is something we’re proud of putting on our menu. It might sound a little basic but when the fish is so fresh and so local, it really elevates the dish and puts it up there with the best dining. The fish might be King George whiting, John Dory or flatty tails – or what’s best on the day.” This passion for quality is why Spiros and the other chefs really value their
relationship with their fishmonger. “We catch up every other day and find out what’s in season, what’s just come in. He gets our seafood almost entirely from local fishermen – which matches our “local and seasonal” philosophy. It’s so fresh that, for example, we’ve had yabbies come in still scampering around.” It’s not just in the kitchen that The Strand team shines. Just the place for pure indulgence Porters Williamstown has carved out a significant niche in the Nelson Place dining precinct since John and Zoey Porter opened the chic restaurant just under 12 months ago.

ead chef Ryan Lane’s contemporary dishes, inspired by the rich diversity of Australian cuisine and taking inspiration from Asia and Europe, deliver a fusion of sophistication and simplicity that continues to win fans. Zoey says that the Porters team is now thinking ahead to its second Christmas, with plans to give groups a wonderful taste of that international approach to delicious food. “It might seem early to be even thinking about Christmas, but we want to give our guests the best and that takes planning,” says Zoey. “We’re going to offer a traditional Christmas Day menu, but with chef Ryan on board, diners can expect his signature flair.” Porters has huge cred as a space for functions during the Christmas season – or, in fact, any time of year and for any reason. It starts with great food, but Porters also boasts the sublime allure of a sophisticated fitout designed by John and Zoey. Fabric bucket chairs around well-spaced tables, squashy chesterfields to sink into and designer lightfittings are juxtaposed with concrete floors and rich timber accents – it’s all about comfort and the feel-good mood. “People can hold a smaller celebration
around one of our large communal tables,” Zoey continues. “For groups of up to 40, we set up a cocktail space which includes a fab grazing table and dedicated bar access. And they can even reserve the entire restaurant, with up to 100 guests for larger celebrations.” Apart from stylish functions, Porters is a café by day and restaurant/bar at night. It opens at 6am on weekdays (7am weekends), serving as a great drop-in for a coffee start and with a nutritious and tasty brekkie/brunch menu leading into lunch. Then the lights are dimmed for intimate dinners and tipples at the chic bar where a signature cocktail or tapas-style grazing can be had. Well-curated reserve and premium wines by the glass are on offer, as are espresso martinis or delicious affogato. The winter menu is receiving rave reviews, with the chef promising warm, earthy ingredients, the finest Aussie seafood, succulent lamb and tender beef. Desserts? They’re the peak of indulgence. Discover brilliant Croatian flavours A bank and a missionary chapel for old seamen in the 19th century and premises of various businesses up until recently, the lovely heritage-listed building at 139 Nelson Place in Williamstown is now home to Ragusa Republika, a fine dining restaurant celebrating Croatian cuisine.

anager Eva Maddox says that while the character-rich building they occupy is well-known by many, far fewer may know about the deliciousness of Croatian cooking. She says their chef, Santosh, creates amazing food, with the traditions of Croatian cuisine given respect and care. “His creativity and love come out in all his food,” says Eva. “And he has Teta (aunty) Nada alongside. She creates traditional dishes like she always has – no measurements, all by taste. If we twist her arm enough, Teta Nada might start cooking classes which I know people would love. “Then there’s Pino, who’s our wine expert. He’s a go-to for matching wine with food, knows his spirits, and can suggest one of the many great Croatian wines. We also have Sasha in front-of-house, an expert in Croatian cuisine who is working hard to organize our popular Croatian music nights.” What can guests expect from Ragusa Republika’s fine dining approach in a beautiful fine dining setting? Traditional Croatian choices for entree include the likes of pašteta od bakalara – salted cod with homemade flatbread; and zagorski štrukli – traditional baked pastry pillows filled with ricotta, served with truffle oil. Other perhaps more familiar dishes, such as squid ink dumplings with calamari, chilli and garlic, as well as scampi risotto are

also on the menu. The mains introduce ribarska popara – traditional seafood stew; and dinstani kiseli kupus – sauerkraut with pork and potato. Or it goes way upmarket with a 350-gram chargrilled wagyu 8+ scotch fillet, while twice-cooked duck and Moreton Bay bugs are also in the mix. And dessert? Eight delicious selections
include knedle – plum dumplings with plum sauce and sour cream, a traditional favourite. Eva says Ragusa Republika is also a classy year-round function venue. “We can host any kind of celebration,” Eva explains. “Just recently, we’ve hosted a christening, a corporate business lunch and canapé-style birthday party, to name a few.

A fabulous focus on living well Kerry Rentsch is very happy in her job – she gets to be a part of promoting harmony and wellbeing at a retirement village that she’s proud of. They’re out and about … smelling the roses, as they say.” While the village has a bowling green, gym, pool and fab clubhouse – even a workshop and beauty salon – Kerry found that some residents can tend to retreat to their homes and get lost in Netflix or TV. “But when they get outside, amidst nature, their social interactions become more varied and this, in turn, promotes harmony and wellbeing,” she says.

“So I’m all about creating opportunities for a full, contented village life really. That applies as well for the tai chi and yoga classes we started.” Kerry is known for her frankness in discussions and welcomes the same from the residents.

If they try us, I’m pretty confident they’ll use us again.” Something else that the taxi service does very well is having drivers in uniforms, as pristine as their cars. “A taxi service is a relatively luxurious form of public transport and it should look and act like one,” Will says. “You’re not going to find a grubby car or a slovenly driver in our team. “We’re a friendly bunch who loves a chat – always led by the passenger – on topics as diverse as football to world peace. Things that go bump in the night Students at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College are becoming spooky … and downright kooky. It’s mysterious – and some would even say altogether ooky, but the principal, Marco DiCesare, is far from being concerned. In fact, he’s excited.
M
r DiCesare is very pleased to unravel the ‘mystery’: “Our students are currently in twice-weekly rehearsals for The Addams Family Musical, a team effort that will explode onto stage in our 800-seat auditorium next month.” The college has produced 22 musicals since its inception in 1997, which has enabled students to experience teamwork and learn performance, technical and visual art skills. “Our student performers love being involved in productions,” Mr DiCesare continues. “During the recent school holidays, they gave up their own time to add a bit of polish to their performance. “Now we’re all looking forward to seeing them transform into the creepy and kooky Addams family through song and dance, with makeup and great costumes created by the entire college community – one of more than 1500 students.” The musical’s director, Damian Bernardo says The Addams Family school edition is one for the ages. “The funny, macabre world of well-known characters Gomez, Morticia, Fester, Wednesday and Pugsley, Grandma and Lurch will come alive on stage,” Damian says. “We can only stage the show by arrangement with ORiGiN Theatrical in New York, with the musical changing things up from the original TV show of the 1960s. The 21st-century storyline reveals an intriguing collision of past and present.”

Learning real-life skills How schools are helping students get to grips with future challenges. Words: Sarah Marinos. In 2001, Stephanie Alexander approached Collingwood College with an idea. She wanted to plant a school kitchen garden that would teach children how to grow fresh fruits and vegetables. Alexander then wanted to show the students how to turn that produce into nutritious meals. “I wanted to introduce these kids to the most amazing range of foods and tastes. I wanted them to understand the right time of year for planting asparagus and sweet corn and to know when food is ripe in the garden,” she says. “I want kids to be comfortable in the kitchen and garden and to make the connection between what they’ve grown and how to use it in the kitchen. I’d like to see every child in Australia have a kitchen garden as part of their primary school education.” Since that first project in Collingwood, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation has spread to schools across Victoria and the rest of the country. An aim of the kitchen garden project is to teach children positive food habits to help reduce child overweight and obesity issues. “We know this changes the way children feel about food,” says Alexander (pictured right). “When we started at Collingwood College, many of the children had never seen things that I thought were pretty ordinary – like beetroot, rhubarb and silverbeet. These things were not part of their lives but once they made something using those ingredients they were incredibly proud of themselves and their horizons were widened.” The Kitchen Garden Foundation is just one successful example of how schools are looking beyond academic studies and exam results to

equip students with real-world and practical skills. At Caulfield Grammar School, students are also looking beyond ATAR results to explore topics as diverse as financial literacy, safe-driving skills and drug and alcohol education.
Around a fifth of 15-year-olds in Australia lack basic financial literacy skills according to an OECD report. The OECD describes financial literacy as a core life skill and recommends schools start teaching these skills early. This is important for a generation growing up in a world that makes it easy to spend invisible
money and to face difficulties when using buy-now-pay-later schemes. The middle school program teaches students about budgeting and recognising financial scams. By year 12, students are learning about the intricacies of Australia’s tax system and how to manage credit cards and mobile phone contracts, says Stefaan Steyn, commerce learning area leader at Caulfield Grammar School. The school’s pastoral and house system introduce older students to practical facts about the risks of drugs and alcohol on an age-appropriate basis. “We work with specialists who talk to students about recognising when someone is struggling, recognising danger signs and how to support a friend in a crisis,” says Steyn. Student-run diversity assemblies are also a way for the student community to highlight, discuss and learn about social issues. “Students with a particular interest in an issue work with teachers and put together a program for an assembly. They might present a video, arrange a panel with students, staff and external experts or bring in a guest speaker,” says Steyn. Topics covered in previous assemblies include gender diversity, body image and how to increase acceptance of people from refugee backgrounds. “Education is not just about the ATAR score. Students need a whole education and a values-based education that gives them a broader exposure to the real world,” he says. “We want them to have a sense that they’ve been given the skills and grounding to go into broader society.”

Local governments have the levers to influence house prices a hot issue. Mr Sukkar made headlines in 2017 at the height of the property boom by telling young Australians they needed a “highly paid job” to buy a house. The Greens also proposed a national standard for renters’ rights, an issue which is currently addressed at state level. Even so, one panellist warned that other levels of government needed to step up. “Every level of government and every sector has to do their bit,” Victoria’s Residential Tenancies Commissioner Heather Holst said, adding that this would work better with co-ordination between them. “Local government probably proportionately in many cases does more than its counterparts, because it’s so proximate to the problem.” Social housing was one example of an issue in focus for different levels of government, Council to Homeless Persons chief executive and Homelessness Australia chair Jenny Smith said. “There’s a bit of a ping-pong between local government not feeling empowered to require social housing or affordable housing as part of developments and wanting leadership from state government,” she said. “And state government saying, ‘We can’t really do that, it needs to happen at the local level’. “That’s the only way we’re going to keep [from] slipping further behind.” (iStock)
Local governments are better placed to help solve the housing crisis than the federal government, a key expert says. Changing planning strategies to build more new homes in sought-after areas of major cities would have a bigger impact on affordability than introducing a national housing strategy, according to Grattan Institute fellow Brendan Coates. “[The federal government] can provide funding for social housing, and it can fix aspects of the tax system,” he told a recent Melbourne panel discussion, ‘How governments can help struggling Australians with rising housing costs.’ “That will make a difference, but I think that’s also overrated. I don’t think reforms to negative gearing would have made that much difference to the housing market.” Instead, he said the local government level was the best opportunity to address the cost of housing in Australia. “It’s the planning rules that make it really hard to build housing where people want to live,” he said. Talking about a national housing strategy was giving governments an “out”, whereas the levers for the supply side were at the state and local levels. His comments follow an increased national focus on housing affordability in recent years as eye-watering prices in Australia’s largest cities have left many potential home buyers locked out. The recently re-elected Coalition government appointed Michael Sukkar as Minister for Housing, following a campaign in which the opposition’s policies on negative gearing and capital gains tax were

Boxer ponders pro move By Lance Jenkinson Louise Heta’s entrance into boxing was fashionably late. But the 37-year-old from Werribee has made up for lost time with a spectacular first year in the ring, notching up a 7-3 record along the way. Heta’s career has accelerated at such a fast pace that she’s considering turning professional. “I’ve only had 10 fights, but the experience I’ve had in that time has been crazy,” Heta said. “I’ve got a couple of years left if I want to fight in the amateurs. But you never know – we might end up turning pro for a year or two and go for it.” Heta, who comes from the A-Team Boxing stable in Werribee, made a name for herself at the recent 2019 Elite Australian Championships in Burwood East, claiming a silver medal. After beating Madison Benson in the semi-final, Heta set up a dream fight with Port Macquarie boxer Jessica Messina, a long-time Australian representative and the top ranked boxer in her class. Heta was little known, but that all changed once she stepped into the ring with Messina and held her own. Messina took the points, but Heta went the distance and had the champ’s corner worried at times. “We went to war,” said Heta, who is coached by her husband, Kim. “We were toe-to-toe – three rounds, three minutes, it did not stop. I fought the best I’ve ever fought.” Heta’s willingness to get on the front foot and not back down drew plaudits from her opponent. Messina found Heta’s style awkward because it was similar to her own. “She came up to me in the end and said,

‘No one has really pushed me like you have in terms of being such a similar fighter to me … I feel like I’ve just fought another version of me’,” Heta said. Heta walked away from the ring feeling her hard work had paid off – but her best moment probably came post-fight.

“Even though I got silver, it was like gold to me. The biggest thing for me was that I competed with her.” Heta, who has just signed with her first major sponsor, Jols Adidas, has received invites to train at the Australian Institute of Sport and attend a training camp in Thailand.

Williamstown overcame a bout of the goalkicking yips to come away with a 21-point win over Northern Blues on the road at Preston City Oval in the Victorian Football League on Sunday. The Seagulls had a mighty struggle in front of goal, kicking 8.22 for the day, including 10 consecutive behinds in a goalless third quarter. Better late than never, Andrew Collins’ team found a way to goal with four majors to one in the last quarter to claim the four points. Nick Rodda finished with a game-high three goals, while Sam Dunell added two. Mitch Hibberd and Liam Hunt were the main ball winners for Williamstown with 26 disposals apiece, while Adam Marcon capped a 20-possession game with 10 tackles. Leigh Masters, Joel Ottavi and Jason Pongracic were also influential for the Seagulls. Williamstown has strung together four consecutive wins and is unbeaten in six games.
The Seagulls will host Essendon in a blockbuster at Downer Oval on Saturday from 2pm. Meanwhile, Footscray also made it four straight wins, running away from Sandringham in the second half to claim victory by 37 points at Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Sunday. Defence the difference By Lance Jenkinson Altona’s much-vaunted defence kept Deer Park to just eight goals in a 16-point victory in their Western Region Football League division 1 clash at John McLeod Reserve on Saturday. The Vikings’ back six strangled the life out of an imposing Lions’ attack for the second time this season as they completed the double over the six-time defending champions. Vikings coach Saade Ghazi was thrilled with his defensive unit which was undaunted by the big name Lions’ forwards. “It was always going to be, have we got the right match-up or have we not?” Ghazi said. “It’s very hard to match them all up because they’ve got some good players, but our defenders did some big jobs.” Kelly Pickard had arguably the toughest task of the Altona defence standing next to the competition’s leading goalkicker Jase Perkins. Pickard restricted Perkins, who has 63 goals for the season, to just two, down from an average of 4.8 per game. The other key match-ups for the Vikings saw Shae Killey take on Michael James, Kevin Johnson on Jack Redpath and Jayden Post on Chris Stewart when he moved forward. Joel Magnabosco’s drive out of defence was another significant factor in the Vikings win. He was arguably the best-on-ground. “I thought he was pretty good for us,” Ghazi said. “He’s our co-captain and a good leader.” Altona made a flying start to the game, kicking 3.6 to nil with the wind in the opening quarter. Where the Vikings won the match was against the breeze in the second and fourth quarters, where they managed to kick five goals – three in the second and two in the fourth. It was a stark contrast to Deer Park’s inability to score into the breeze. “It was bloody hard work scoring into the wind,” Ghazi said. “We got five goals to their one and in hindsight that was the difference in the game.” Altona forward Patrick Rose came up big for his side with a game-high three goals. Two of Rose’s majors came into a tough wind. “‘Rosey’ got two goals from 35 or 40 metres out,” Ghazi said. “That’s like gold against the wind.” Altona was close to full strength with Jordan Robbins, Lee Spiteri and Luke Goetz all returning for the Deer Park game. The Jason Hamilton era is over at the Braybrook Football Club. Hamilton handed in his resignation on Saturday, prior to the Brookers’ 98-point win over North Sunshine. The Brookers came a long way during Hamilton’s tutelage, making the finals last season and building their respect in the Western Region Football League division 3, but it will ultimately be remembered as an unfulfilled partnership with the side not tasting premiership glory. The Brookers are this season half a game outside the top four with four games remaining. “It was basically a mutual agreement of where we’re at,” Brookers’ president Bryan Patten said. “We had high hopes this year and Jason’s done a great job over the last 18 months since he’s been there, but it was time to part ways. “He’s come to the club and said that he thinks it’s time to part ways and we’ve accepted his resignation. There’s no hard feelings or anything like that.” Hamilton bought into the one-club culture at Braybrook. He set new and improved standards among the seniors and reserves players. “He’s been great for the club on and off the field,” Patten said. Braybrook has promoted senior assistant coach John Hughes to caretaker coach for the remainder of the season. Hughes has been Hamilton’s assistant since he joined the club. “He’s across the game plan and the boys get along well with him,” Patten said. Team Lind is a touch of class By Lance Jenkinson City West Falcons wing attack Maggie Lind would be a rich woman if she received a dollar for every time she was asked, ‘what’s it like to be coached by your mum?’. Lind understands the outside interest in what is a unique relationship when a parent coaches their child in a team environment. Away from the court, the 25-year-old has a special bond with her mother, Marg, but she said it can get strained in the highly-charged netball sphere. “People always ask me that question,” Maggie said with a laugh. “It can be very difficult and sometimes we have a few blews about it. “I know other people that have been coached by their mums and some of them hate it, but I love it. “Me and mum have a really good relationship on the court and away from the court.” Aside from the mother-daughter relationship, Maggie rates her mum highly as a netball coach. Marg has enjoyed years of success with City West Falcons in the Victorian Netball League and has coached at the highest level with Melbourne Kestrels in the old Commonwealth Bank Trophy. Marg’s coaching qualities are known, so why is she not coaching in the Super Netball competition? “She’s the best coach I’ve ever had by far,” Maggie said. “She’s very strategic, she’s got really good relationships with the players and she’s very
nurturing, but when we need a foot up the backside, she’ll give it to you and I love that. “She should be coaching at a higher level, but I think she’s pretty happy doing grassroots stuff. “I think she’s ambitious, but she loves the Falcons and loves the Altona Academy, so I don’t think she’d want to lose them, she’s very dedicated there.” Maggie is entering the peak of her career with City West Falcons. She is a key member of the Falcons mid-court in a team that is the defending VNL champions and red hot favourites to win the title this season. With the Falcons developing a number of players that have gone on to play Super Netball, the question can be asked why Maggie is yet to receive a call. Maggie admits to becoming a bit disillusioned with the game a few years back, but she has found the passion for the game again and is playing at an elite level. She said she would jump at the chance to play in Australia’s top competition. “I’m playing better netball than I ever have. “I’d love to play at the top level and I think I have that capacity, but whether it happens or not, we’ll see.” City West Falcons sealed the minor premiership with a 75-58 win over Ariels at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. The Falcons will round out the home-and-away campaign against Boroondara Express.

Yarraville hunts for solid finish By Lance Jenkinson Yarraville Glory has one eye on the now and one eye on the future in the Football Victoria men’s state league 1. The Glory is out of the promotion hunt, but is still keen to be recognised as the best side outside the “big four” of Preston Lions, North Sunshine Eagles, Sydenham Park and Altona City, who have broken away from the pack and will be jostling for the highest honours. While fifth place is the Glory’s target – they are sitting seventh after Saturday’s 1-0 road win over Keilor Park, two points off fifth – they are also wary of blooding some young players. “We’d love to get up to fifth spot behind the big four,” Glory coach Paul Donnelly said. “That would be a bonus for us I reckon with the way the season has gone. “We also have to have a look at a few young lads. “We’ve had a lot of injuries, we’ve got seven guys out at the moment, so there’s been some other guys getting their opportunities and we had a couple of reserves players in the last couple of weeks and they’ve done well.” Donnelly said luck was on Glory’s side against Keilor Park. The Glory kept their one-goal lead, scored by Lewis Shannon in the 25th minute, despite Keilor Park hitting the woodwork twice and Glory midfielder Nik Velkovski clearing a ball off the goal line. “We were a bit fortunate this week to hold on to the one-nil,” Donnelly said Ryan Stewart donned the captain’s armband
for Yarraville and led his side to victory in the absence of the suspended Steve Georgakakis. Yarraville will have a crucial game in its chase for the best-of-the-rest title when it visits fifth-placed Banyule City on Saturday. Meanwhile, Evan Christodoulou and Domenico Marafioti found the back of the net in Altona City’s 2-0 win over Whittlesea United. Altona East Phoenix was on the receiving end of a heavy 4-0 loss to Geelong Rangers in state league 2. Williamstown’s promotion hopes in state league 3 took a blow with a 1-0 loss to Lalor United. Altona North won the local derby 2-0 over Melbourne City in state league 4. In the NPL, Altona Magic has tumbled to ninth after a 2-1 loss to Dandenong City at Paisley Park on Saturday night. The Magic took the lead in the first half through Lirim Elmazi, but two of City’s former A-Leaguers, Brendon Santalab and Adrian Leijer, scored in the second half to take the points away from the home side. Sitting four points outside the top six with four games remaining, the Magic faces a must-win game against Port Melbourne Sharks at J.L. Murphy Reserve on Saturday night. In women’s competition, the big game was under lights on Friday night in state league 3 when Altona City and Altona Magic locked horns. City won easily 4-0 on a night when Renee Laszczak scored a hat-trick. Laszczak has scored 17 goals in 12 games to sit top three in the golden boot.
