Can ban for local brewer A Footscray brewery has been caught on the hop by the industry watchdog’s ruling on one of its beers. Craft brewery Hop Nation introduced its Jedi Juice line of beers in 2017, tapping into the growing popularity of the hoppy New England IPA (NEIPA) style. But the name and design – a stylised image inspired by Star Wars character Princess Leia – has been pinged by authorities for being too appealing for people aged under 18. Alcohol industry watchdog ABAC investigated Hop Nation following a complaint from the public in May. The anonymous complainant had visited a bottleshop with a friend’s teenage boys. He said he was concerned when the boys, aged 14 and 15, became “very excited” when they saw the Jedi Juice packaging, asking if they could buy it as it was “so cool”. An ABAC panel found Jedi Juice fell foul of its Code, which holds that marketing must not use “imagery, designs, motifs, animations or cartoon characters” likely to appeal to minors. It requested Hop Nation cease using the cans. Hop Nation argued the artwork was more like graffiti than a cartoon and noted the label was clearly labeled as alcohol. Food haven on the menu By Goya Dmytryshchak A planned food precinct for Spotswood dubbed “Grazeland” is expected to attract 30,000 people a week, according to applicant Museums Victoria. Dubbed “Melbourne’s most exciting new culinary destination”, the Grazeland application is still before Hobsons Bay council but it has been slated to open this summer. Museums Victoria, which also manages the Royal Exhibition Building, is calling for expressions of interest from vendors to operate at the large parcel of vacant Crown land it manages next to Scienceworks.
It expects to have more than 50 sweet and savoury food outlets, three licensed bars, artisan stalls of handmade and locally-designed products, live on-stage entertainment, roving artists and performers, and multiple private function spaces. Architect-designed by Push Projects, Grazeland’s footprint would be more than 10,000 square metres. The expressions of interest document states the precinct will be “reminiscent of a permanent street party or laneway festival”. “Situated just five kilometres from the Melbourne CBD, Grazeland will provide a rotating weekly festival environment featuring
live performance stages, roving entertainers, and an incredible atmosphere that celebrates Melbourne’s amazing food culture – all in all, the perfect weekend destination for families, groups, work colleagues, and couples,” it states. “Though chiefly an ‘open-air’ experience, Grazeland is also a destination for all seasons, with ample undercover roof protection year round. “Grazeland will be promoted through a vast range of marketing and advertising channels, as well as regular ‘special events’ to drive return visits and maintain its appeal. “Given its size, quality, and unrivalled food
festival atmosphere, Grazeland is set to quickly establish itself as an enduring and cherished Melbourne icon.” Grazeland would be open every weekend of the year, trading Friday from 5-10pm, Saturday from 12noon-10pm and Sunday from 12noon-9pm. It would also host special private functions. Projected figures predict the precinct will attract 8000 visitors on Fridays, 12,600 on Saturdays and 9400 on Sundays. Vendors would pay an establishment fee of between $4000 and $15,000, which is refundable at the end of the three-year tenure. Site fees would range from $1300 to $3900 a month.

Tenants testy over rent hikes Greedy landlords and the impact of a wider economic slowdown are sending Yarraville businesses to the wall, according to struggling traders. Skyrocketing rents are behind the recent departure of a number of long-standing businesses, leaving empty shopfronts along the once-thriving Anderson Street. The sudden closure of Bakers Delight comes hot on the heels of the loss of a discount shop, a florist, a Japanese take-away and a vintage
clothing shop, along with the Commonwealth Bank. Yarraville Traders Association’s Carla Smith said one of the recently departed businesses was forced out by a landlord demanding a $500 weekly increase in rent as part of a new lease. “When property values do go up many of the owners of business properties try and take advantage of the increase,” she said. “This is exactly what’s going on in Yarraville.” Ms Smith said the loss of the bank and key offerings such as a baker would have flow-on effects as fewer people would come into the
area. The situation has been compounded by a reduction in discretionary spending by shoppers on items other than food. “I feel we have been in recession for the last couple of years,” Ms Smith said. “The retailers here are trying to do their best and hoping somebody comes by, but running a small business is really hard.” Ms Smith warned Yarraville’s unique mix of stores was at risk of being replaced by larger chain-style businesses. She backed calls for steps to help retailers such as an “empty shop tax”, discussed earlier
Dogs save owner in cemetery attack Security at Williamstown Cemetery is being reviewed after a woman was sexually assaulted while walking her dogs. “Kate” says her shih tzu and terrier-cross saved her after she was attacked about 8.30pm on Saturday, June 29. Kate said she had stopped as her dogs, Louie and RuPaul, had rushed off to chase a rabbit. “I got pushed from behind into the ground and attacked,” she said. “I started screaming, pretty much straight away, like, at the top of my lungs. “They [my dogs] viciously attacked him, like, growling, biting, and I think, with my screaming and the struggling, it made him stop. “I keep thinking about what would have happened if they had run off or not done anything. “I think that they saved me.” Kate said she was disgusted by the attack, which “came out of nowhere”. “I didn’t hear anyone behind me, around me, so it’s just quite scary – even the fact that maybe I was being watched before it happened. “He got to the point where he was trying to take my pants down and I was kind of pushed into the mud, unable to really move. “When he had gone that far, my screams got louder, I tried to move as much as I could and the dogs were going for it.” The man released Kate and ran away. Kate sprinted home, followed by her dogs. The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust chief executive Deb Ganderton said security would be reviewed. “At this time, our thoughts are with the woman who was sexually assaulted,” she said. “The assault is the subject of an immediate review as part of GMCT’s ongoing security assessment process. “GMCT is intent on providing pedestrian access to all our cemeteries and we have no plans to place time restrictions on that access. “We do close off motor vehicle entry to our cemeteries at the end of the day.” Detective Senior Constable Jenna Sladek of

Truck curfew fail: residents Residents living along one of the inner-west’s busiest truck routes have slammed the state government’s failure to introduce industry-backed truck curfews on their road. Star Weekly last week reported older trucks that fail to meet emission control standards will face extended curfews on Somerville Road and Moore and Francis streets in Footscray and Yarraville. But residents living along Williamstown Road are furious that truck curfews for their road they say were promised in the Smart Freight Initiative were left out of the announcement. Maribyrnong Truck Action Group secretary Martin Wurt said verbal agreements had been made at negotiating meetings that Williamstown Road and Buckley Street would have night truck curfews as part of the new ‘freight zone’. Save Willy Road president Dr Kate Lycett said the government had broken its promise and overlooked “the most important components of the initiative”. “We have an unprecedented consensus between the transport industry and residents who agree that these curfews are absolutely necessary, and yet the government obstructs their implementation,” she said. Truck trips along Williamstown Road are projected to double to about 4000 per day by 2031. Dr Lycett said the failure to include residential stretches of Williamstown Road and Buckley Street in the new curfew regime will “funnel the dirtiest trucks” along these routes. Two winter dippers are trying to find ‘Nemo’. Navanya Matthews and Rea Haare brave the chill for the weekly Winter Dip events off Altona Pier and came across a sunken treasure earlier this month – a knife engraved with Happy 21st Nemo. “We go to the Winter Dip every Wednesday and Saturday and one of the members dropped their keys,� Ms Matthews said. “Rea was helping to look for the keys and found this knife under the pier just peeking out of the sand for her to see. “We’ve been told that the knife is quite a good
quality one and it looks like it was a special gift and we would love to find the owner.� Ms Matthews took her search to local residents’ group Facebook pages but to no avail. “It’s likely someone dropped it while fishing off the pier but people have come up with a lot of theories about the story behind the knife filled with murder and mystery,� she told Star Weekly Weekly. Plastic not so fantastic By Goya Dmytryshchak A petition to ban single use plastics on beaches and in parks in Hobsons Bay was tabled at last week’s council meeting. Lead petitioner Abigail McAsey said she wanted items such as plastic cutlery, bags and water bottles prohibited in communal areas. “They’re really easy to find alternatives for and it would reduce the amount of rubbish in bins that overfill in the summer time,” the Newport resident said. “It’s like the law of not being able to smoke on beaches. You can’t necessarily police it but once it becomes a known thing in the community, most people would abide by it.” The petition, signed by 136 people, also calls on the council to promote waste-free alternatives around the community via posters in hubs such as libraries, train stations and community centres. Ms McAsey said she believed it was a small change that could help preserve the environment. “Living near a bay, we have such beautiful beaches and amazing wetlands, lots of really cool birds, and seeing the destruction of all of that growing up so far is not what I want to see,” she said. “Simple things like banning the use of single use plastic will make such a change.” The petition comes as the council adopted its Waste and Litter Management Strategy 2025. The strategy includes community education on single use plastic and food waste avoidance and developing a policy to phase out single use products in the council’s operations.

Green light for school site A $29 million new junior high school campus is on track to open in Seddon in 2021 after the state government secured the land needed for the project. The site, on the corner of Pilgrim and Albert Streets, will hold one of two junior campuses for years 7 to 9 within the new Footscray Learning Precinct. Gilmore College for Girls will become the second co-educational junior campus and the existing Footscray City College will become the senior secondary campus. The three-storey Seddon campus will include science, arts and food technology facilities. Demolition works have begun on the site and construction is expected to start in coming months. Williamstown MP Melissa Horne said the campus will mean families in the Seddon, Kingsville and Yarraville area will be able to send their children to a local high school for the first time in decades. “Having been the President of SKY High for a number of years, it’s incredibly rewarding to see the government working with the local community for better education opportunities,” she said. Footscray MP Katie Hall said the creation of the Footscray Learning Precinct will transform the way education is delivered in the inner-west. Pool bid makes a splash A $65 million aquatic strategy for Hobsons Bay, including a new pool in Altona Meadows and replacing Laverton pool with an outdoor water park, was last week adopted by the council. However, the exact location of the “Western Aquatic Centre” in Bruce Comben Reserve is yet to be determined following strong opposition to the proposed demolition of Cooraminta Children’s Centre to make way for the pool. A petition with 565 signatures was tabled at last week’s council meeting asking that the children’s centre not be demolished in favour of the pool. Cr Colleen Gates told the meeting a stakeholder reference group, which will include a representative from Cooraminta, would be established to help guide the aquatic centre’s development. “We’ve taken reference to demolition of children’s centres out of the strategy, we’ve taken concept plans out of the strategy, because we recognise that that needs to be developed in consultation with the people who are most invested in that part of the precinct,” Cr Gates said. Community feedback on the aquatic plan had requested a 50 metre pool instead of the planned 25-metre pool. However, a council officer’s report stated that a 50 metre pool needed a catchment of more than 100,000 people to be financially viable and this could not be achieved in Hobsons Bay. Also planned under the strategy is an expansion of Bayfit Leisure Centre at Altona North, while Laverton Swim and Fitness Centre will be replaced with a water park and youth facility at the adjacent playground in McCormack Park.

Residents rally against academy By Benjamin Millar Plans to build a soccer training academy on public land along the Maribyrnong River have split the Footscray community. Melbourne Victory, Australia’s largest soccer club, last year revealed plans to build an $18 million women’s and youth academy in heritage-listed Footscray Park. Supporters of the proposal say it will bring a welcome boost to the area’s young people, but opponents say the development would lock up rare open parkland essential to meeting the
needs of a booming population. Save Footscray Park protestors have organised a community rally outside the Maribyrnong council offices to coincide with the July 23 council meeting. Gemma Cafarella said the group reflects growing concerns about rare open parkland being used to build three floodlit synthetic and turf soccer pitches and a 500-person grandstand. Ms Cafarella said assurances the community would still be able to use two of the pitches are misleading, as the 40 hours per week
Multicultural Employment and Youth Services (AAMEYS) chair Phil Brooker said the Football Academy would provide local young people with new opportunities to engage via football. “One constant challenge is to provide culturally diverse young people with meaningful opportunities in both sport and life,” he said. Footscray’s bustling market and multicultural eateries have been the secret ingredient behind one MasterChef Australia finalist’s tilt at a series win. Simon Toohey, a Footscray resident who has cooked his way to the final five contestants on the hit Network 10 show, waxes lyrical about the foodie delights scattered throughout his adopted home suburb. “I say Footscray has the best food in Melbourne. Council to fight single ward bid By Goya Dmytryshchak A state government plan to return to single-member wards has met with opposition from Hobsons Bay council. Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek said the Labor government intended to introduce the Local Government Bill 2019 into Parliament later this year with six proposed reforms, including “a preference for single member wards to make councils more accountable”. “The new laws will help councils be more
accountable, democratic and responsive,” he said. Hobsons Bay currently has three multi-member wards: Wetlands ward (two councillors), Cherry Lake ward (two councillors) and Strand ward (three councillors). Councillor feedback in a report tabled at last week’s council meeting indicated the council would oppose a return to single-member wards. “The need for single ward councillors is not supported as the council acts and thinks municipal wide,” the report stated. “Council does not agree with the need to
have equal numbers of voters per ward and moving to single-member wards as it opens up opportunities for some individuals to be appointed or elected by a specific group for a specific purpose.” The council is yet to finalise its official position. Independent councillor Peter Hemphill, who has served on the council for 20 years in both single and multi-member wards, told Star Weekly after the meeting that he was against single-member wards. “It’s quite clear when you’ve got
single-member wards, there are a hell of a lot more stooges,” he said. “If you’re a sitting member, you know that they are going to gang up on you.” “Secondly, the government has not articulated in any way, shape or form, why there should be an equal number of councillors per ward in a multi-member ward or why a single-member ward is the best structural electoral outcome.” Other changes proposed include capping electoral campaign donations and allowing for the dismissal of a councillor after a community-initiated commission of inquiry.
Planting for parrots The endangered swift parrot is making a comeback in Hobsons Bay as people are being urged to build up the birds’ habitat on National Tree Day. Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek, whose logo is the swift parrot, has teamed up with Hobsons Bay council to plant more than 2600 indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses along the banks of Kororoit Creek at Altona Meadows this month. Friends president Geoff Mitchelmore said about 30 of the parrots were seen last month in a forest of mahogany gums at Altona Meadows. “We have planted thousands of eucalypts along the Kororoit Creek corridor to supply nectar and lerps for the swift parrot,” he said. “It is hoped that in the not too distant future the swift parrot will begin to populate the creek’s full length within Hobsons Bay, if not beyond.” The planting will be held on Sunday, July 28 from 10am-2pm at the Altona Memorial
Park’s eastern reserve on Dohertys Road, Altona North (near the corner with Grieve Parade). There will be roving entertainment and a free barbecue lunch, tea and coffee and complimentary T-shirts. Footscray Park Masterplan The Footscray Park Masterplan (2011) has guided improvements and developments across the park, including Maribyrnong Boulevard carpark, Mills Close Steps, the regional all-abilities play space, public toilet, picnic areas and broad scale tree planting. Additional works to be completed in 2019 include barbecue and picnic facilities along the river, completion of the Drew’s Walk axis, a pontoon on the Maribyrnong River and improvements to the Moore Street gateway (signage). The updated masterplan unlocks the sites potential and proposes to strengthen the sporting landscape with the inclusion of the Melbourne Victory Football Academy. Melbourne Victory is seeking a 21 year lease and license arrangement that would be subject to a statutory process which includes advertising. Finding a connection Mexican artist Frida Kahlo is among the subjects in an eclectic exhibition bringing artists together from across Melbourne’s west. Arts West is holding an exhibition titled Connected, featuring five artists’ works. Among them is Albion’s Linda Fry, 68, who cites Kahlo as her muse. “Like a feminist woman, she did what she needed to do,” Fry said. “She lived the life she wanted to live. “She had polio as a child and survived through that and then she had a bus accident in her teenage years where a steel pole went right through her chest.
“A lot of people called her a surrealist artist but she actually wasn’t. As one of her quotes said, she never painted her dreams, she painted her reality. “Paint was her therapy, as painting is my therapy, as it is a lot of people’s therapies.” Other artists featured in the exhibition are Francesca De Maria, Tamirat Gebremariam, Jonathon Goodfellow and Larissa MacFarlane. Olivia’s plan a cut above Eleven-year-old Olivia Thompson has given her long hair the chop to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. The Williamstown North Primary School year five pupil has raised $3500 by participating in the World’s Greatest Shave. Olivia said she was moved to support her year teacher, whose son has leukaemia. “Last year, we fund-raised for the Leukaemia Foundation and he [my teacher] did a mohawk, so I decided to take it a step further,” she said. “While I was raising money, I kept on increasing my goal. “My main goal was $1000, which I definitely did not think I would beat.
“Then it was $2000 and now it’s $3000. “I have raised $3500.” Olivia’s chopped locks will be donated to six people. “For the patients that have leukaemia, my hair gets donated to them and gets turned into wigs so that they can wear them,” she said. “We cut off six ponytails and every ponytail that we cut off is one wig, so I have made six wigs with my hair. “I just want to say a thank you for everybody that has donated and helped me keep on pushing to this stage.” Goya Dmytryshchak

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a flavour hit at a Footscray mainstay What an ornament to Footscray Littlefoot has become. The first bar to set up shop in Footscray central, Littlefoot continues to carry a kitchen, unlike most of its neighbouring bar fellows. We are happy to accept an invitation to take the new winter menu for a run (see full disclosure below). On this night, Team CTS consists of myself, Bennie, Justin and Will. We eat well and deeply, coming away happy and satisfied. Some of the tucker is right there in bar food mode – the sort of things you’d be happy to get a bite of if you were imbibing at Littlefoot anyway. But some things we think are on another, higher level – making Littlefoot a food destination in its own right. The charcuterie board ($25) is a good starter for us – tonight we are hungry lads. It’s mix of sour, salty, oily and chewy would also be an ideal light meal for two. The DIY taco board ($18) is a hit. The four fish pieces – snapper – are superbly crumbed and deep-fried, holding together beaut even under the strain of taco construction. The flesh is both firmish and delicate. Of the bits and pieces, it’s the red cabbage that adds tangy contrast. It’s joined by guacamole, jalapenos, lime and swathes of fresh coriander. Just as expertly fried are the mac ‘n’ cheese croquettes ($12) – this is glorious stodge. Could’ve done with a bit more seasoning, IMO.

The burgers are available in three modes – Littlefoot, Wild West and Bulldogs. The beef burger ($20) comes in Bulldog garb of cheese, pickles, red onion, pickle, lettuce and “special burger sauce”. This handy handful is accompanied by good chips. If anything, our jackfruit burger ($20) is more noteworthy for the simple reason it offers an alternative to lentil patties and the like. It’s done out in Wild West style – and that means a zingy combo of jalapenos, sriracha, caramelised onions, mustard, cheese, tomato and lettuce. Another flavour hit – of the snacky variety – is provided by the lip-smackingly good edamame ($7) with garlic and black pepper. Beer food supreme.

SPORT Falcons dream winning run comes to a crashing end Even the all-conquering City West Falcons are prone to an off night in the Victorian Netball League championship division. The Falcons’ dreams of an undefeated season came crashing down with a 56-47 loss to North East Blaze at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. After 15 straight wins to start the season and a 22-game winning streak dating back to July 17 last year, the Falcons were proven mere mortals as the Blaze had their way. Falcons wing attack Maggie Lind admits it was a flat mood in her camp after the game, but she was not surprised with the way her side played on the night. “It’s disappointing losing, especially in the way we did, because we didn’t play well,” Lind said. “You weren’t upset with it so much because we played so bad. “I think it would’ve been a different mood if we played really well and then lost. “The fact that we knew we played terrible and
only lost by nine, that was the pleasing thing.” City West was missing three internationals in Tahnysha Salanoa, Soli Ropati and Tharjini Sivalingam, who are playing at the world championships. Lind was making no excuses for the Falcons loss though, prefering to focus on who was available. “I don’t think it’s the reason we lost was because we didn’t have those players,” Lind said. “Me and Molly had a quiet night [in mid-court], so that wasn’t fantastic. “We were also trying a few different things because we don’t want to be one dimensional come finals. “Yes it might have worked sometimes and other times it wasn’t the right decision, but you have to try them, especially now coming into finals because finals is a new ball game. “We’ve been to finals many times and we know how hard it is. “People crack under pressure, things change,
so we need to have those options up our sleeve, so I think it’s a good thing to try as many combinations as we can now.” Lind believes the loss could be a blessing in disguise. The pressure of striving for an undefeated season is now gone and the game will act as a reminder that they can be beaten if they are not at their best. “I think we needed a loss,” Lind said. “We’ve had such an awesome season and there’s been close games but we haven’t really felt that pressure yet. “In saying that, Blaze were really good and they didn’t make a lot of errors, so kudos to them.” City West will be looking to strike back when it faces Ariels in the penultimate round of the season at SNHC tonight in the late 9.40pm game. A win over Ariels will be enough to secure the Falcons the minor premiership and top billing in the finals. Lance Jenkinson
Altona North digs deep By Lance Jenkinson Ninety drama-filled minutes provided Altona North with its biggest character test of the season in the Football Victoria men’s state league 4 west. A hard-fought 3-1 win over Laverton in a local derby at Laverton Park Reserve on Saturday was not as straightforward as North would have hoped going into a game against a side that was 10 rungs below them on the ladder. North finished the game with nine men after Alexerd Blaze and Omar Riffi were brandished two yellow cards each that turned into reds and they were sent off. It made for an interesting final 15 minutes of the match, which North survived after showing their fighting capabilities. “The last 10 or 15 minutes could’ve went either way,” North coach Alan Muscat said. “We were down to nine men and Laverton threw everything they had at us. “We held on and it was a good character building win.” Altona North were somewhat taken aback by Laverton’s early onslaught in the first half. Laverton got the rewards of its fast start with a goal from a free kick to Connor Bencich. The goal was a wake-up call for North, who slowly worked their way back into the contest. “Hats off to Laverton, [coach] Vinnie [De La Plaza] and his team, they’ve picked up some players in the past few weeks and they’re getting better results,” Muscat said. Two goals from Altona North striker Chris Swain late in the first half turned the game on its head. Swain scored his first from a free kick and pounced following Laverton errors to give Altona North an unlikely 2-1 lead at half time. Swain completed his hat-trick in the second half, converting from the penalty spot after his foray into the box drew the penalty. It was a special day for Swain in more ways than one. “It was a good day for Chris to get a hat-trick,” Muscat said. “He’s of Aboriginal descent and it’s Aboriginal heritage week [across Football Victoria competitions] this week, so it was nice for him to cap it off with a hat-trick.” Altona North is sitting a point clear on top of the ladder after five straight wins, but Muscat is not totally satisfied that his side playing to its full potential. “We’ve been grinding out our results, which is good,” Muscat said. “It’s going to be a tough run home with the way the ladder is shaping up.” Altona North will have another local derby 28 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 17, 2019

Bulldogs hold on to land a narrow win Footscray held off a fast finishing Casey Demons for a seven-point win in the Victorian Football League at Marvel Stadium on Sunday. The Bulldogs appeared to be coasting to victory, leading by 21 at three quarter time, but Casey refused to give in, kicking the final three goals of the match to make it a nervous finish for Bulldogs fans. Maribyrnong College’s high achievers go to the wall Young basketball star Paul Tsapatolis is proud to call Maribyrnong College home. The year 11 student is on the verge of representing Australia at under-17 level and has credited the college’s sports academy for helping guide his development as an athlete. It all complements the work Tsapatolis is doing with his local club Keilor Thunder and his state and national team coaches. “We started doing gym sessions in year 7 and people my age are only starting now or last year,” Tsapatolis said. Tsapatolis, a Vic Metro under-18 national championship winning centre, is certainly not the only athlete to have benefitted from Maribyrnong College’s sports focus. The college has had many athletes go on to represent their state and nation in a range of sports. To show how proud they are of their student athletes, Maribyrnong College unveiled a Wall of Fame, featuring the photos of current and former students who have either been selected to represent Australia or got to a professional
level in their chose sports. Tsapatolis was delighted when he heard of the idea to recognise the elite sportspeople to have come through Maribyrnong College. “Just to get that recognition, it says the school is proud to have you there with a photo of you on our wall,” he said. Tsapatolis’ dream is to become a professional basketballer. Altona has emerged with a 4-3 triumph over local rivals Footscray from a nail-biting Hockey Victoria men’s premier league tussle at the Footscray Hockey Centre on Saturday. Andrew Scanlon fired in a double and Matthew Huf and Kieran Symons found the back of the net in a Seagulls victory that moves them back into the top eight. Footscray fell from fourth to sixth on the ladder. In women’s premier league, Footscray posted a 5-1 victory over Altona in the local derby. Vikings win a thriller By Lance Jenkinson Without three of its key players, Altona dug deep for a memorable one-point win over local rival Spotswood in their Western Region Football League division 1 clash at Grant Reserve on Saturday. The Vikings entered the game without key position player Luke Goetz and ever-reliable midfielders Jordan Robbins and Lee Spiteri, but while they were undermanned, they certainly did not underwhelm. Vikings coach Saade Ghazi lauded the gritty team effort in a victory that saw the Vikings return to the top of the ladder. “We were a bit short in the midfield today, we had a few out, so to win against a really good quality team and club was good,” Ghazi said. “Personnel wise, we didn’t have any VFL boys, we had Jordy Robbins out, Lee Spiteri out, a late withdrawal with the flu this morning, so it was a really good win. “We had a couple of guys playing their second and third games of senior footy.” With two of their own prime movers out, Altona placed added importance on shutting down two of Spotswood’s most influential link
players. Ghazi pinpointed David Iaccarino and Charlie Nastasi as two Woodsmen who needed to be held in check for his side to emerge victorious. Heath Rafferty was assigned a run-with role on Iaccarino, while Shae Killey kept a close eye on Nastasi. Both of the defensive role players were superb for Altona, with Iaccarino, who Ghazi describes as “one of the premier players in the comp”, down on his usual output in the midfield, and Nastasi, who Ghazi praised as “very dangerous”, kept goal-less for the afternoon. No player had a bigger impact on the ground than Altona ruckman Sean Tighe. Tighe had an enthralling ruck duel with Spotswood big man Zach Del Grosso and then followed up to have a significant impact both at the clearances and around the ground. Spending over 90 per cent of game time in the ruck, Tighe’s influence helped Altona cover the absence of Goetz. “I thought he competed really well,” Ghazi said. “He’s a big boy, nearly six-foot-six, and he’s a very smart footballer.
Steven Kennedy relished the slippery conditions. Altona gained the advantage in a low scoring match with a four-goal-to-nil second quarter. Then it was the Vikings defensive capabilities on show in the second half as they failed to register a goal after half-time, but still managed to win. Ghazi’s side has moved a game clear at the top, but that will come under immediate threat when the Vikings face third-placed Deer Park at John McLeod Oval on Saturday. With a relatively soft draw in the final five home-and-away games after the clash with Deer Park, it is not a stretch to say that top spot will be Altona’s to lose if they can beat Deer Park. It was Spotswood’s first loss in over two months. The Woodsmen will be keen to atone when they face Hoppers Crossing in a blockbuster at McLean Reserve on Saturday. Hoppers will head to Spotswood full of confidence though after rolling local rivals Werribee Districts by 26 points. In other division 1 games, Sunshine enjoyed a 44-point win over Point Cook, St Albans got the better of Caroline Springs by 21 points and Deer Park thrashed Albion by 161.
Five straight losses has seen the Altona Gators fall to second-last on the Big V Basketball men’s division 2 ladder. The Gators went down in both games of a double header at the weekend, losing 71-58 to RMIT Redbacks at the Altona Sports Centre on Saturday night, followed by a 74-66 defeat to Maccabi Warriors away on Sunday. This weekend’s penultimate round will see them travel to Wangaratta on Saturday night for a date with North East Bushrangers before returning home on Sunday to host Melton Thoroughbreds in a 1pm tip off.
Football
Those using their fingers to keep track of Williamstown CYMS’ win streak in the VAFA Premier C will need to start using their toes. The CYs brought up their 11th consecutive win on Saturday, downing Ajax by 67 points at Fearon Reserve. The Mathew Montebello-coached CYs are three games clear on the top of the ladder. MOTOR Honda adds style to the HR-V By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring From the ubiquitous ‘postie bike’ to the Civic hot hatch and NSX hybrid supercar, not to mention motorcycles, lawnmowers and generators, Honda has spent half a century keeping up with Australia’s automotive needs. Included in this august line-up is the compact HR-V, the world’s most popular sports utility vehicle, which has undergone an extensive upgrade following its introduction Down Under in 2015. Included is a new variant, the RS, designed for the sporty driver who wants a more edgy experience behind the wheel. Now in four model grades – VTi, VTi-S, new RS and VTi-LX – across the range styling takes on the very stylish cues of the latest Honda Civic, including a new front bumper and grille, along with LED headlamps from VTi-S. Power comes from a 1.8-litre, i-VTEC four-cylinder engine mated with a revised continuously variable transmission with stepped ratios, designed to deliver driving performance and fuel economy. All grades are front-wheel drive. The new HR-V comes to market from $24,990, plus on-road costs, with the VTi automatic and tops out with VTi-LX auto at $34,590. The new RS, the test vehicle, slots in at $31,990.
Styling
First introduced in 1995, the HR-V stood out from an increasingly gathering crowd with its somewhat quirky appearance. The year 2005 saw a change of character. Gone was the square,
a two-door effect, the styling has been retained in the latest iteration. The RS rolls on 18-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the feeling for occupants is of space. An elevated driving position offers excellent visibility, as well as making getting in and out of the car easy for a range of drivers. Safety
HR-V utilises Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure technology for occupant safety, while side impact protection and front, side and full-length curtain airbags are standard across the range. Honda’s innovative Lane Watch makes a return to HR-V. Using a camera in the passenger-side mirror it displays live video on the 7-inch display screen giving an 80-degree view of left-lane traffic to help drivers monitor blind spots if they haven’t set-up the door mirrors correctly.
The standard reversing camera can display three different angles – normal, top-down and wide, to enhance visibility when reversing. A very handy feature. HR-V is equipped with standard anti-lock braking, electronic brake distribution and brake assist. Other standard active safety features include vehicle stability assist, motion adaptive EPS, hill start assist and an emergency stop signal.
Driving
The HR-V RS 1.8 litre, i-VTEC four-cylinder
engine is mated to a CVT with sequential paddle shifters. Fuel economy is claimed 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban/highway cycle. Our test-car consumption used 11 litres per 100 kilometres in town and 5.2 on the motorway. Unique RS damper and spring rates in this HR-V deliver a more rewarding drive with flatter cornering, greater control and a more stable ride than many small SUVs, while a new variable steering gear ratio enhances low-speed manoeuvrability with steering wheel movement reduced from 2.79 (in non-RS grades) to 2.38. The sharply raked rear window limits the driver’s view behind. However, the fuel tank’s positioning under the front seats, as opposed to the more usual spot beneath the rear seats, enables the HR-V to carry 437 litres of cargo with the seat backs up and 1462 litres with rear seats down. Also, Honda’s innovative Magic Seats, with up to 18 configurations, mean carrying bulky or odd-shaped items is a breeze. An electric parking brake on the centre console releases automatically when the car moves off and an adjacent nifty ‘brake hold’ button making the driver’s life more relaxing in stop-start situations.
