Medal honour for pioneer Australian rules football trailblazer Peta Searle has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Searle, who lives in Yarraville, was recognised in Monday’s list for her extensive service to Australian rules football. As player and coach she has spent more than two decades spearheading the involvement of women in Australian Rules football at both community and professional levels. Searle was head coach at the VFL Women’s Academy and coached the Western Bulldogs women’s team to the AFL’s first exhibition match in 2013.

She made history in 2014 when appointed by St Kilda as the first full-time female assistant coach in the men’s AFL competition. Searle told Star Weekly she was “honoured and a little bit overwhelmed” by her Honours List medal. “I just feel privileged that I may be helping shape things for girls and boys towards fairness and creating positive attitudes,” she said. Working her way up in such a male-dominated sport has not been easy, but Searle’s passion and determination never wavered. “I probably had my blinkers on in terms of it being unprecedented and how I was the first,” she said.

She is proud to be playing a key role in helping to develop the AFLW competition, seeing the support for women in AFL as a sign

of a healthy shift not just in the game but more broadly in society. “I think sport is a really good medium for changing attitudes, breaking down barriers and also getting people thinking in terms of respect and responsibility,” she said. Searle said she was heartened to see people embrace the AFLW, particularly younger fans. “I have gone to a lot of games with my own family and I always walk away with a really warm feeling,” she said. “The atmosphere it’s created is really positive, you’ve got these nine-year-old boys and girls running around idolising the women as much as the men. “The real power of the AFLW will come through in 10 to 15 years when those young boys and girls grow up.”

Footscray meter freeze is over By Benjamin Millar Footscray parking meters will be switched back on this month for the first time since 2015. Maribyrnong council announced on Friday that paid parking will be reintroduced from June 24 after parking sensors installed last year found the occupancy of parking spaces in the precinct exceeded 85 per cent – a trigger for the return of parking fees. Parking meters are being removed from Yarraville and re-installed in central Footscray as part of the plan.

Yarraville traders have welcomed the removal of the area’s ill-fated parking meters almost four years after they were introduced. Work began last week on the long-awaited removal of the meters, which were switched off just a few months after being turned on.

Traders in Yarraville village were vehemently opposed to the introduction of paid parking, arguing it had been ill-planned and poorly implemented. Trevor Junge from the Yarraville Trader’s Association said the traders wanted to thank the local community for standing up for local businesses in their campaign to have the meters deactivated and removed. “I think it should be a message of hope to all strip shopping precincts that have to compete against the shopping malls and plazas that are owned and operated by multinational

companies – that our communities want us and need us,” he said. “Putting in ill-thought through barriers to ‘fix’ a problem that isn’t there, or to diversify council income, shouldn’t and won’t always win.” Maribyrnong council has foregone at least $8 million in revenue since placing a freeze on parking fees in central Footscray and Yarraville. In 2017, it adopted a new Destination Parking Management Policy, involving “parking management precinct plans” across Maribyrnong.

A top platform for busting out More than 20 young performers will dance up a storm when they take over Footscray station later this month. Western suburbs crew L2R Dance will descend on the station from 4.30pm on Thursday, June 27, to provide a sneak peek of what to expect at the Due West Arts Festival in November. Featuring more than 25 emerging and professional dancers from migrant and refugee backgrounds, the hour-long showcase will

include hip-hop dance performances and battles. The session will culminate with an all-in dance jam session, with commuters and onlookers invited to step in and bust their own moves. L2R is a non-profit organisation using dance to help shape a more positive picture about young people from culturally diverse backgrounds living in Melbourne’s west. Free dance classes help empower and build

confidence in young people who may grow into the next generation of cultural leaders. Maribyrnong council has phased out the use of a weed killer that has been linked with overseas cancer cases. Three landmark US court rulings against Roundup maker Byer over cancer cases have prompted the Victorian government to review its use of glyphosate on public land. A court last month awarded $US2 billion ($2.9 billion) to a Californian couple after a jury agreed that Roundup caused their non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. A Melbourne gardener is also launching legal action after contracting cancer he blames on the product. Maribyrnong council infrastructure services director Steve Hamilton said the council has already phased out glyphosate products such as Roundup. “The health and safety of our residents and staff is paramount. As an alternative we have been using organic herbicides and trialing weed steaming, both of which have undergone thorough risk assessments,” he said. Hobsons Bay council is exploring alternative options to reduce or eliminate the use of chemical herbicides. “Council uses mechanical methods such as mowing, slashing or burning wherever possible … in order to reduce our use of chemicals,” mayor Jonathon Marsden said. He said the council had dramatically reduced its reliance on herbicides, however an independent review on the use of chemicals finalised in March this year, found that in some circumstances other methods of weed control were not practical. Drug charges

A Braybrook man has been charged with cultivating and trafficking cannabis after police seized 660 cannabis plants from a Mullenger Road property on June 5. The man, 28, was also charged with theft of power and possessing a prohibited weapon. A Bacchus Marsh man, 23, was also charged with cultivating and trafficking a commercial quantity of cannabis and theft of power.

Art eyes on the prize The west’s premiere art competition is back. The Footscray Art Prize will return next week, with more than 800 works submitted from across Australia. Entries shortlisted in four categories will go on display from June 20 to July 20 at Footscray Community Arts Centre and VU at MetroWest. Crossing safety blitz By Goya Dmytryshchak A crackdown is under way around 50 school crossings in Hobsons Bay, including one where a schoolgirl was struck by a car in Altona. Hobsons Bay council officers are conducting safety blitzes in school zones and have warned they have a zero-tolerance policy for illegal parking and unsafe drop-offs. A year 8 girl from Mount St Joseph Girls’ College in Altona was thrown onto the bonnet of a car and onto the road while trying to cross Maidstone Street, near Civic Parade, in 2018.

The girl was on the school crossing before the supervisor was due to start work. She was treated for minor injuries in hospital, while other students and staff who witnessed the incident were visibly upset, according to a teacher. Further down, we have a large gate and that’s closest to the station [Westona], so that’s probably the area that’s most problematic.” Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said increased patrols were in response to concerns from school-crossing supervisors and members of the public. “Areas around schools are particularly sensitive with children and young people not always being aware of the risks of roads and traffic, making it all the more important for drivers to do the right thing,” he said.

Two men have been fined $15,000 and had their car forfeited after pleading guilty to possessing nearly 300 abalone at Altona in January. The pair, who were caught after a tip-off from the public, pleaded guilty in court to taking a commercial quantity of abalone, taking abalone during the closed season and taking undersize abalone. Victorian Fisheries Authority acting director Brooke Hall said the men were caught with 298 abalone, 291 of which were undersize. “The pair’s illegal haul is nearly 30 times the daily recreational bag limit of five abalone per person,” she said. The pair’s $5000 Ford XR6 and diving equipment were seized on the spot. The two were each fined $7500 and convicted, and the magistrate ordered them to forfeit their diving equipment. Police probe ‘horrific’ attack By Goya Dmytryshchak Police are appealing for witnesses to a “very horrific” King Street attack that has left a Seabrook father with potentially permanent brain injuries. Awer, a first-time father of a six-month-old boy, was in a coma for two weeks and remains in a rehabilitation centre with life-changing injuries months after the assault. The 27-year-old needs help to walk, communicate and eat. Awer was assaulted by two carloads of males after being followed from a South Melbourne nightclub. CCTV footage from March 24 shows a red Subaru WRX and a red Mitsubishi force Awer’s car to pull over about 4.30am before blocking it from the front and back. Awer leaves the passenger seat before being assaulted by six to eight offenders, who are of African appearance, with a “metal or wooden object”. Detective Sergeant Simon Watts last week told Star Weekly that police were calling for witnesses and dam-cash footage. “At this stage, all we know is the victim was forced off the road by a red Subaru sedan and a red Mitsubishi sedan … he was then attacked by a group of between six to eight males. “He was then assaulted with an unknown object [and]suffered serious permanent injuries to his head. “The victim has gone out one night and still hasn’t, several months later, been able to return to see the progress and the growing-up of his

son. Any information that could help us would be really appreciated.” Police are unsure of the motive behind the attack but believe Awer and his attackers have some connection. “We don’t believe that this was a random attack,” Sergeant Watts said. There were three others in the car with Awer at the time he was assaulted. On Thursday, police arrested a 21-year-old man at Truganina. He has been charged with attempted murder and was remanded in custody. Police also arrested a 23-year-old man on May 1 in relation to the assault. He was extradited from Sydney to Melbourne, charged with attempted murder and remanded to appear at the County Court on July 30. New line of defence By Goya Dmytryshchak A mangrove project that will fight coastal erosion is taking root in Altona. In the world-first trial, mangroves are being grown in protective pods at Altona Coastal Park, a 70-hectare intertidal and salt marsh area just 11 kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD. The project is headed by Melbourne University’s National Centre for Coasts and Climate in partnership with Hobsons Bay council. Researchers planted 564 seeds collected from Port Phillip Bay at Altona, with about a fifth starting to grow leaves after 41 days. The seeds were planted in pods designed to withstand wave forces. Project manager and NCCC research fellow Rebecca Morris said 210 pods had been installed at Altona, with more at Grantville and Lang Lang on Western Port Bay. “Visitors to the Altona Coastal Park may notice the grey concrete pods in the shallows,” Dr Morris said. “They are like an hourglass in shape and will house the mangrove seedlings until they are strong enough to survive in the open. “At this stage, 21 per cent of the seedlings inside the pods have sprouted – which is about what was expected – but they are very fragile and we will continue to monitor their growth with the hope of planting more seedlings in early 2020.” Members of the community are being asked not to get too close to the pods to allow the mangroves to become strong. Cr Sandra Wilson, who holds the environmental sustainability portfolio, said one of the aims of the project was to raise awareness of more nature-based solutions for defending coastlines.

Agent guilty of importing drugs By Goya Dmytryshchak A former real estate director has pleaded guilty to possessing ice and importing a marketable quantity of a drug known as GBL to his Altona home. David Costa, 36, had been in charge of Elders Real Estate’s Werribee and Tarneit offices for about 15 years, the County Court heard. Costa ordered about $145 of gamma-butyrolactone – similar to GHB – online from overseas to be delivered to his Altona address.

The package containing a white plastic bottle of clear liquid weighing 1108 grams was intercepted by authorities, who substituted the GBL for a harmless substance. In August last year, an Australian Federal Police officer posing as a courier delivered the package to Cotsta’s unit and he was arrested a short time later. A search of his home uncovered several bags of methamphetamine with a pure weight of 2.7 grams, which Costa said was for personal use. In her sentencing remarks, Judge Wendy Wilmoth said that as the real estate business

boomed over the past decade, Costa worked very long hours under very high pressure. “You had begun to use illicit drugs in a recreational sense during your mid-20s, but this had not been a problem until you experienced burnout from the pressure of work,” she said. “This resulted in what you have described

as a breakdown, which came to a head in 2016 when your relationship with your partner ended. “You and your sister sold the business, reducing that cause of your stress but making available a large sum of money which then financed your increased drug use. “You used GBL regularly combined with cocaine and amphetamines.” Costa was given a two-year community correction order to perform 70 hours of unpaid work or to be used as time in treatment for drug abuse and mental health issues.

New pavilion a net gain Inner-west tennis players are in love with the new Kingsville tennis pavilion. The pavilion, in West Footscray’s Hansen Reserve, replaces a 1950s-era pavilion demolished to make way for the rebuild. As well as a large social space for club activities and functions, the new pavilion features a commercial-grade kitchen and undercover outdoor viewing area. The area around it has been upgraded with more accessible pathways and improved lighting for the tennis courts. The new pavilion will double as a social space for the Kingsville Tennis Club’s community programs. Club president Marg Lind said the upgraded pavilion would help the club expand its community programs. “Tennis is a sport for all ages and abilities,” she said. “This new facility will help foster the growth of tennis and participation, provide a

place where we can share common interests and grow together as a community. “Kingsville Tennis Club is privileged to have the support of Maribyrnong council with the building of our new clubhouse.” Paralympian and Australian Open wheelchair tennis champion Dylan Alcott grew up playing at Kingsville Tennis Club. Western suburbs residents are the top online shoppers in Australia. The latest Australia Post eCommerce figures showed Point Cook had the greatest volume of eCommerce across the country, in the year to December, followed by Towoomba and Mackay in Queensland. According to the data, Point Cook online shoppers made the most number of purchases from variety stores, fashion, homewares and appliances and ordered the second highest number of health and beauty products, hobbies and recreational goods. Figures revealed that more than 75 per cent of households in Point Cook shopped online at some point in 2018. Nationwide, the total online spend in 2018 topped $27.5 billion, up 24 per cent on the year before. Australia Post parcels and express services general manager Ben Franzi said the annual report, Inside Australian Online Shopping, provided an overview of Australia’s eCommerce market with key insights into who is shopping online, and what they are buying. “Australians are getting online … and changing the face of shopping,” Mr Franzi said. “They are also expecting faster service and delivery – with next day deliveries growing by 31.7 per cent, with more than 62 per cent of these fashion-related purchases.” He said online goods made up 10 per cent of total retail last year. Hoppers Crossing online shoppers ranked seventh overall for the volume of purchases made last year. The suburb’s shoppers made the fourth highest number of purchases from variety stores, and also favoured fashion and homewares and appliances.

Close call for stowaway kitten By Alesha Capone Wyndham’s CFA crews put in an awesome effort when they rescued a stowaway kitten from a car’s engine bay last week. Members of the Truganina and Hoppers Crossing fire brigades were called out to Tarneit on June 4, where they helped to extract a little black-and-white cat trapped inside a vehicle. Truganina brigade secretary Rosie Utteridge said the car’s owner, who had driven from Altona Meadows to Tarneit, had pulled over after hearing the kitten meowing from

somewhere inside his automobile. When the driver was unable to find the feline, the CFA was called in. Locating the kitten from within the car’s innards proved to be a tough job for the CFA. Ms Utteridge said that she and the other firefighters put the car onto a ramp in an effort to spot the feline. They also used thermal imaging equipment in the hope that the kitten would show up as a “hotspot” within the vehicle. But because the car’s engine was hot, this proved difficult.

Eventually, after unscrewing part of the car’s panelling, they found the kitten. “I took my jacket off and scooped it up,” Ms Utteridge said. Ms Utteridge took the rescued kitten, which had no tags or collar, to the Wyndham council pound. She said staff at the facility said the kitten would be put up for adoption if its owner was not found within eight days. Ms Utteridge said that if no owner came forward she would be keen to adopt the kitten and name it Firey.

Billy Elliot’s step it up They aren’t even teenagers yet, but four young boys are about to carry the weight of one of the biggest musicals in the world on their shoulders. Seabrook’s 10-year-old River Mardesic, along with Omar Abiad, Wade Neilsen and Jamie Rogers, all 12, will share the titular role in Billy Elliot the Musical when the production returns to Australia in October. Based on the hit film with music by Elton John, the musical premiered in Australia in 2007 with seasons in Sydney and Melbourne. Thanks to adjustments made to the show’s design, this tour, which opens at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre in October, will travel all over Australia and make its debut in cities such as Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. So it is fitting that the four boys who share the lead role, chosen from more than 600 who auditioned, are drawn from all over the country.

Mardesic is from Seabrook, Abiad from Brisbane, Neilsen from Newcastle and Rogers from Canberra. The quartet was revealed to the public on May 31 and they all make their professional debuts in one of the most demanding roles in theatre. For Mardesic, who wasn’t born when the last production opened and has never seen it performed, it was a particularly special moment because he got to do it with his three new best friends. “It felt really great doing it together, we are like brothers,” he said. “I was really happy to be dancing with them all. “I was so proud dancing with them.” Melbourne tickets are on sale and a waitlist for other cities is available on the show’s website. I was born in Sydney and moved to Williamstown in 2012. I am currently in year 10 at Williamstown High School and have really enjoyed my time at the school, which has given me opportunities to pursue interests including debating, music, the environment, craft and woodwork. I recently started as a casual at Napoli’s fruit and vegetable shop in Ferguson Street, which gives me exposure to some of the great characters in the community. When I can, I enjoy volunteering at Hobsons Bay Boomerang Bags in Altona. I like knowing that we are recycling fabric that was destined for landfill into viable alternatives to plastic shopping bags. Tell me all about what you like about Williamstown? I love the botanic gardens and the beach, but also how easy it is to get on the train with friends to go to Yarraville and the city. There is a great community feel that you can experience having an ice cream at Nelson Place, going to the farmers’ market or being a part of the Willy Lit Festival. What don’t you like or what could be improved? I couldn’t really think of any improvements.

What’s you favourite cafe and/or restaurant in the area? My favourite dish is massaman beef curry from Siam Kitchen in Newport. Tell me about your passion for young adult literature? I love talking about books with like-minded people and authors at the young adult book club at Yarraville’s Sun Bookshop. It has given me exposure to books I never would have thought of reading. I have learned the more books you read, the more books you discover. What is the debate you’ll participate in for the Willy Lit Fest? I am excited to be part of a great panel – including some established writers and Jacinta Parsons – that will be debating the merits of sci-fi versus fantasy genres. I hope I can provide a useful YA perspective. The 16th Williamstown Literary Festival will include about 80 authors at 40 events on June 15 and 16. Back in the saddle Williamstown BMX rider Jamie Truran is headed for next month’s world championships in Belgium after bringing home a pair of medals from the recent BMXA Bad Boy National Championships. The 34-year-old, who rides with Wyndham Warriors BMX Club, was among more than 1500 riders competing in Australia’s premiere BMX event. BMX Australia is the second largest BMX nation behind the US, with 17,000 members aged two to 80. Truran won all three of his qualifying motos and took home a silver and bronze medal. Truran said he stopped riding for years and returned to the sport after nearly two decades away.

“I think they were my first nationals for about 17 years,” he said. “I had about 15 years off and then came back and raced the state championships when they were in Wyndham in 2017 – won those, which was basically on my bucket list because I never won the state championships as a kid. “I was like, oh well, here we go, have another go – won them as an older guy. “Then went again last year and won them again, and so moving on now, I did the nationals up in Shepparton.” Truran picked up the silver medal in his age group’s 20-inch event, finishing less than half a second behind South Australian Greg Clift. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir is at home at Yarraville’s new local The long-standing old fish and chip shop, opposite the vet where we take Boris the cat, is no more. In its place has arisen a swish-yet-welcoming cafe. Boma Coffee, a sister outfit for Kodama Coffee in Williamstown, has quickly made itself right at home – just as a heap of happy customers are doing likewise in their new local. The interior is compact and comfortable; and there are outside tables, too. The menu is succinct – breakfast various ways plus a handful of heftier brunch/lunch items. The beef burger ($18) looks like an austere outing given all the multi-layer architectureinspired versions going around. But simple is good – and this burger is very good. It has an Angus beef patty of chewy, tasty delight, along with cheese, tomato, lettuce, ketchup and mustard. Importantly, the dill pickle atop is crunchy and sour. The waffle fries are OK. But. Honestly, waffle fries appear to be a new gimmick. I just wish people would stop. Give me spuds – or something closely approximating them – every time. Still, this a fine burger that delivers deep pleasure through simplicity and great ingredients. The Boma Coffee superfood salad ($18) wins me over with similar elan. I might expect Bennie “Salad Boy” Weir to

I keep on glancing at my feet, expecting to find myself wearing sandals. With socks. As well, the salad’s ingredient are all finely chopped, finding themselves just a few degrees short of being a smoothie. But the kale (yes!), quinoa, roasted corn, black turtle beans, tomato, avocado, toasted almonds and salted ricotta, all with a tangy japapeno and lime dressing, go down an absolute lip-smacking treat. My bowl is empty and shiny when I finish the lot. As you’d expect at a cafe that has the word “coffee” in its name, my cafe latte ($4) is terrific and has me gaily chirruping like a spink in spring. Boma Coffee is on a for-sure winner in terms of location. Suitably removed from the congestion of Ballarat and Anderson streets, and with a good distance to Woven (in one direction) and Fig and Walnut (in the other). SPORT Falcons flying high in Victorian Netball League City West Falcons have left a trail of destruction across the Victorian Netball League championship division over the first 11 weeks. The Falcons are a perfect 11-0 and their hot run of form is showing no signs of abating. Falcons coach Marg Lind has been impressed with the team-first ethos among her players that started to build on their run to the premiership last season. “This team gets along really well,” Lind said. “They’re quite connected as a group and there’s a lot of trust there.

“They still have that connection we started to build last year and that’s strengthened a bit this season.” City West has long been a powerhouse of Victorian netball. The Falcons have built a reputation as a team that is meticulous in their planning and have the ability to execute to the nth degree on game day. In the latest win, a 66-31 drubbing of Casey Demons at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night, the players took

it upon themselves to move mid-courter Molly Jovic into the attacking circle without notifying the coaches once the score blew out beyond 30. Past Falcons squads probably would not have thought about making a move without running it by Lind or one of the assistant coaches, but this team lives a little on the edge. “They enjoy a bit of fun, a bit of camaraderie and that’s what that was all about,” Lind said. “They’re quite entertaining as a group actually. They have a few moments when they go a bit silly and take some massive risks, but

that’s usually when they’re 20 goals up.” You can bet the City West players will not be pulling any stunts like that next time they are on court. The top-of-the-ladder Falcons will feature in a match of the round blockbuster against Geelong Cougars at Eagle Stadium in Werribee this Wednesday night. Seagulls put on a master class By Lance Jenkinson It all came together for Williamstown in a thumping 53-point win over North Melbourne in the Victorian Football League at Downer Oval on Saturday. The Seagulls were irrepressible from start to finish in delivering their most complete performance of the season. Seagulls coach Andrew Collins was as satisfied as he has been all season in the post game. “We played some of our best footy for the year,” he said. “If we played footy like that every week, you’d have a very happy coach and a very successful team. “We haven’t put a game together like that this year. “We’ve had some good quarters, we’ve had a couple of good wins, but today was definitely a game where we matched some really physical play with some really good ball movement.” Williamstown had to bring its A-game to beat a North Melbourne side that had put ladder leader Richmond to the sword only seven days earlier. In both their attack and defence, the Seagulls were exquisite in everything they did. It was borne out of their insatiable appetite for the contest early on. The foundation for the Seagulls was an 11-goal-to-six first half, including eight second quarter goals. “It was just a real credit to our boys and the way they played,” Collins said. “We were able to get the right dynamics in our group.” A huge inclusion for Williamstown was impact forward Nick Rodda. Rodda kicked four goals, but it was his one-per centers that were infectious to his teammates. “He was so physical in the packs today,” Collins said. “He was like a bowling ball taking down 10 pins. “It’s an area that we’ve struggled with, bringing the ball to ground, but he just crashed packs and took some big marks. “We were able to get some good crumbing goals as a result of that.” Rodda’s physical style of play created space for key forward Joel Ottavi to run into. Ottavi finished with three goals and formed a tantalising one-two forward punch with Rodda. “That’s the first time we’ve been able to utilise that set-up for a long period of time,” Collins said. “That’s a real credit to both of those boys, they worked well in tandem and were able to get the result.” It was a big day for Seagulls onballer Mitch Hibberd and defender Joel Tippett against their former side. Hibberd continued his stellar form with a game high 29 disposals, 12 tackles and two goals, while Tippett played 100 per cent game time at full-back and caused headaches for

He’s so talented and he’s just going to get bigger, stronger, faster. “There’s a kid by the name of Sam Menagola at Geelong and I think he’s a pretty good player and Mitch Hibberd is going to be very similar.”

Williamstown Football Club held its annual Pride Day event at Downer Oval on Saturday. The Seagulls are a club built on diversity and will continue to thrive because of their inclusiveness. “Everyone is welcome at the Williamstown footy club,” Seagulls coach Andrew Collins said. “That’s always been important in the history of the club. “It’s such a great thing for the football club and as a Hobson’s Bay community to be able to support this day, which is really important to us. “We’re really proud of our inclusiveness at our footy club and we continue to get better and better in that area.” The Seagulls also held a Pride Day luncheon, which included speeches from special guests Senator Janet Rice, Angie Greene and Cameron Schwab. Rice, a member of the Australian Greens, is one of eight openly LGBTI members of Parliament. Greene is a founder of Stand Up Events, which dedicates its cause to fighting sexual and gender discrimination in Australian sport. Schwab is a prominent Australian sports administrator, particularly influential in Australian rules football and soccer. A huge step forward for Williamstown was the establishment of a team in the VFL Women’s competition last season. The Seagulls are 0-4 after losing the Pride Day game to Melbourne University by 11 points on Saturday. “It’s fantastic that we have a women’s footy team and it emphasises the point that everyone is welcome at our club,” Collins said. Eagles regain their mojo By Lance Jenkinson Yarraville Seddon’s form reversal in the Western Region Football League division 2 can be traced back to a Tuesday night in April. The Eagles went into the season all the rage as one of the premiership fancies, but their April form was a cause for concern. It all came to a head following a shock two-point loss to Newport. An emergency meeting was called for April 30, three days after that loss to Newport. It dragged on for an hour, but no topic was off limits. Some players vented, others offered constructive criticism, but it was all done with the team’s best interests at heart. It seemed to work for Yarraville Seddon, who have now strung together four consecutive wins. “It’s probably the four best games we’ve played all year after the loss to Newport,” Eagles coach Vinnie Turcinovich said. “We spoke for over an hour that night and trained for about 15 minutes. “It was really well done with the leadership group having a chat to them and the home

truths coming out with the players. “It was about their mindset before games and thinking it was just going to happen. “Now every game, we make sure we prepare like we’re playing a top side and we get in that zone and prepare like we want to win the game.” Yarraville Seddon’s hunger is back. The Eagles are attacking training sessions with vigor, arriving at games switched on and ready, and the results are showing on the scoreboard. “We pride ourselves on our training,” Turcinovich said. “Even with a week off [for Queen’s Birthday], our training has been at a good standard. The leadership group make sure we drive that standard.” Yarraville Seddon will head into its match of the round encounter with undefeated Wyndhamvale in a positive frame of mind. The Eagles were beaten by Wyndhamvale back in round one, but Turcinovich believes his side is better prepared this time around. Aside from the shift in mindset, the personnel will also be significantly different from the last time the two sides met. “There’s probably 10 to 12 different players

since we played Wyndhamvale in round one,” Turcinovich said. “It’s going to be a completely different side they’re going to come across on the weekend.” Even though it is a first versus second encounter at Yarraville Oval on Saturday, Yarraville Seddon will not change its approach or place a heightened sense of importance on the game. The Eagles are keen to avoid a roller coaster ride of emotions, so they are approaching every game with the same desire and intensity. “We’re going into every game preparing like it’s the most important game of the season,” Turcinovich said. It will be the first time in years that Yarraville Seddon heads into a game as the underdogs. Wyndhamvale has deserved its favouritism because of its hot start to life in division 2 after its demotion from the top flight. “It’s probably the first time in two and a half years that we’re not the hunted and we’re going to be hunting them,” Turcinovich said. Despite a relatively slow start, Yarraville Seddon is 5-2, already two more losses than it had in the whole home-and-away season last year.

The losses are piling up and the pressure is building on Altona Magic. The Magic has won just once in their past six NPL Victoria games to be sitting outside the top six. Altona was beaten 2-0 by Hume City on the road at Broadmeadows Valley Park on Saturday evening. The Magic will be keen to turn their form around against Dandenong Thunder at Paisley Park on Saturday night. Western Jets have added Gippsland Power to their growing list of roadkill in the NAB League.
